One of the key elements essential to a productive and uninterrupted longwall mining operation is roof control. In several of the Island Creek Coal Company's mining sections, polyurethane has been infused 80 into strata to control severe roof failures in the face and gate entry areas. To date about 50,000 kgs (110,000 lbs) of the chemical have been consumed in a number of applications. Roof-to-floor convergence 60 and differential roof sag have been monitored to determine the need for polyurethane infusion and also to evaluate roof stability following the infusion. Stratascopic observations of the roof formed the basis 40 for confirming the need and also for estimating the required quantities of polyurethane. Both chemical infusion and roof control monitoring techniques have been applied successfully under very adverse roof 20 conditions; substantial production benefits have been realized. Operator acceptance of the system has been very good.

The oil industry was built from its humble beginning a few decades ago into a potent force in world economy by human hands and human brains. One of these great leaders in the busy world of oil is Wallace Pratt, of the Humble company, who has been called to a position as director and member of the executive committee of the Standard Oil of New Jersey. Fe-C-Si alloys in silica crucibles were held at 1600°C in a controlled atmosphere of CO and Co2 and the approach to equilibrium was obsertsed. Results were not of sufficient precision to establish the activity and interaction coefficients. Observations 012 the equilibrium provided an average value for the standard free-energy change which differed by + 1.1 kcal from the earlier accepted value. The C-SL relation at other temperatures is calculated and shown graphically. IN the refining of steel in an acid-lined furnace, it is well known that, unlike in basic refining, a very significant amount of silicon may remain dissolved in the metal even when the carbon content approaches a final endpoint. Further, it is known that the residual silicon increases with increasing temperature. The quantitative relation between silicon and carbon can be calculated for equilibrium conditions from data already available on the Fe-C-O and the Fe-Si-O systems. Such equilibrium calculations could show us approximately the limitations within which the reaction would be expected to operate in practice. In the oxidation of a bath containing both carbon and silicon it is well known that at low temperatures silicon is preferentially oxidized first. It can be shown by calculation that at high temperatures carbon will be oxidized preferentially. It is the purpose of this paper to record direct observations on the Si-C relation by means of experiments carried out in an atmosphere of carbon monoxide for Fe-C-Si alloys contained in silica crucibles. When such a system is brought into equilibrium, at a fixed temperature, the composition of the liquid metal is governed by the following equations: Both K1 and K2 are known with a fair degree of accuracy, and may be calculated from the tabulated In general the percentage of CO2 is extremely small compared to that of CO and in the experiments to be described the partial pressure of the latter was generally only slightly below 1 atm. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The induction furnace employed was the same as that described by Rist and chipman' and by Fuwa and chipman.2 It was modified slightly in view of the change from alumina to silica crucibles. The small silica crucible was surrounded by a thin susceptor of molybdenum sheet which in turn rested inside a zirconia crucible. Since the zirconia was subject to breakage, it was supported inside an alumina crucible. The charge consisted of 30 to 35 g of electrolytic iron along with the required amounts of refined silicon and graphite to produce a melt of required composition. Purified carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide were passed into the furnace through carefully calibrated flow meters. Two separate and independent series of experiments were carried out. In Series I (D.H.K.) the melt was held in the furnace at 1600°C for periods of time up to 6 hr. Samples were taken at intervals in silica tubes and were analyzed for carbon and silicon. The results of the last one or two samples taken from each experiment and the direction in which equilibrium appeared to be approached are shown in Table I. In Series II (T.F.) the silica crucibles were of less satisfactory strength and the melts were held at 1600° C for periods of only 2 to 4 hr. In heats number 29 to 45 inclusive, the metal was cooled in the furnace and the ingot itself served as a sample for analysis. In heat 46 and all subsequent heats, samples were withdrawn in silica tubes at the termination of the heat, and these samples were analyzed. The results of all of these experiments in which equilibrium appeared to be approached are listed in Table II.

(communication to the Secretary+). -With the word petrology-literally the science of rocks-being used primarily for igneous rocks, and with geophysics coming to mean the study of lavas and the rocks into which they solidify, contributions to the knowledge of the physical chemistry of sedimentary rocks, even though only ideas which may be used as working hypotheses, become most welcome. The forces which control the formation and subsequent history of the stratified portions of the earth's crust are so little known that no one has yet been able to settle finally the questions as to whether petroleum is of organic or inorganic origin; whether it originated far from its present position, or nearby. Yet both the chemical and physical problems of the rocks in which oil occurs seem to be more simple than those of the igneous rocks. The oil-bearing rocks of western Pennsylvania, for example, have in all probability never been subjected to a pressure exceeding 3,000 or 4,000 lb. to the square inch, nor to a temperature higher than 100° or 200° C. These pressures are considerably below the crushing strength of rocks, and the temperature far below their melting point. The igneous rocks,, on the other hand, have been affected by enormous pressures and very high temperatures and yet steady progress is being made in reproducing in the laboratory the conditions of their formation and subsequent modification within the earth. The solution of the sedimentary-rock problems would seem to be fully as important as those of igneous rocks, and yet we must content ourselves with reasoning backward and our inferences as to what has happened are oftentimes little more than guesses.1 One of the fundamental problems is the origin of the salt water in oil fields. Is the salt water fossil sea water; has it been formed by the solution o-f salts of various kinds from distinct beds, from disseminated par-ticles, and from the weathering of suitable grains in the rock; or is it of deep-seated origin? Its general resemblance to sea water points to the first, but the principles held by some concerning the free circulation of water throughout the earth's crust, and certain peculiarities of composition indicated by the few analyses available, seem out of harmony with such an explanation.

Unit Rig & Equipment Co., manufacturer of Lectra Haul trucks, is continually studying methods of reducing the operating costs of large haulage trucks. Reduction of haulage system operating costs is an important goal that equipment operators and equipment manufacturers constantly try to improve on. One of the most variable and important factors affecting operating costs is actual truck operating practices. An examination was centered on methods to optimize truck utilization. It was found that a very effective method of accomplishing this goal would be an automatic truck control (ATC) system to automatically control a fleet of haulage trucks in a predetermined pattern. Economic studies were conducted which showed a very favorable reduction in mine operating costs by use of an ATC system. In 1970, Unit Rig & Equipment Co., in conjunction with SAAB-SCANIA began preliminary development of adapting, for truck use, a proven automated control system, previously used for train systems, small trucks, and military target vehicles. In 1974, the first prototype system was installed on a Lectra Haul M-100 and tested extensively at Unit Rig's test track in Tulsa, OK. This truck and system were then displayed publicly at the 1974 convention in Las Vegas. In 1976, the system was redesigned for production to maximize reliability, ease maintenance, and to accommodate future control and-status reporting developments proposed for haulage trucks. The new design equipment was manufactured, and a full system test will be conducted in an actual open-pit mine for an extended period to evaluate reliability, compile economic data, and obtain application information to evaluate complete mine haulage system conversions to ATC. System Description The ATC system is designed to provide automatic control of all the vehicle functions normally accomplished by the vehicle operator. The basic system consists of the on-board control equipment and the wayside control equipment. The on-board equipment receives commands from the wayside equipment and controls all the truck functions. In addition, on-board sensors monitor all critical truck functions and provide instructions to the truck and system to assure safe operation. The wayside equipment consists of a buried guidewire, block control units and a central controller which provides predetermined signals to the on-board equipment for speed control, steering, and for auxiliary functions (dumping, horn, etc.) through the guidewire located in the truck's path. The wayside equipment also controls vehicle separation, system status, and provides truck location to a central display panel. The central control panel can vary the speed level signals over any segment and can also command an emergency stop to halt all the units. [Fig. 1] illustrates a typical ATC installation. If ATC is used in operations which require flexibility and mobility at the end of the ATC guidance network, the trucks can then be operated by either radio remote control or manually to complete their assigned functions.

In connection with the recent visit of the Special Mission of British Ministry of Munitions to the United States, the United Engineering Societies gave a dinner to the members of the. Mission on Tuesday evening, Nov. 13. This was the only public function on behalf of the visiting commissioners while they were in New York. During the remainder of their visit they were in daily conference with bankers, merchants' associations, labor federations, and other organizations. The result of these conferences will doubtless have an important influence on the manufacture of war supplies in the United States, since it will enable our business men and manufacturers to avoid a good many of the mistakes that unfortunately occurred in England at the beginning of the war. At present, fully 90 per cent. of the employees of British munition factories are omen, and the problem of employing women in the industries of the United States will doubtless soon be encountered with increasing frequency.

DURING the last few years, there has been a constant tendency toward increasingly high temperatures in many lines of industry. The necessity for increased production of coke gave a 16-hr. coking period where we used to have 24 or even 30-hr. periods. Mechanical stokers have increased the temperatures in boiler furnaces. The use of a chain-grate stoker with coke-breeze fuel necessitates a low arch in the furnace and temperatures run much higher than firebrick were formerly called upon to stand. These higher temperatures have necessitated more rigid tests and the separation of even high-grade firebrick into separate classes. More severe tests mean higher temperatures and closer control, and this, in turn, means better pyrometer tubes. Platinum couples do not have a very long life when used at temperatures exceeding, say, 1200° C., but the proper selection of a high-grade brick to be used in a-boiler setting will save the cost of several couples; and with freight rates continually increasing it becomes increasingly important to know where brick may be bought, nearest the job, that will prove satisfactory. Couples that will stand continuous use at higher temperatures, of tungsten, molybdenum, or other metal, will doubtless be forthcoming as soon as the need becomes sufficiently urgent. There are on the market several tubes that are entirely satisfactory for temperatures up to 1300° C., if properly protected from heat shock. The Semet-Solvay Co. makes a practice, however, of testing silica and clay firebricks at 1450° C. for 72 hr., and so far we have been unable to find a tube that- is entirely satisfactory for this purpose. A graphic record of the temperature during the entire test is extremely desirable and hence we have been trying out anything that gave promise of success. Several years ago we were using insulating tubes, made purely for electrical work, of vitrified porcelain. These tubes stood up under any temperature we were able to reach and were apparently impervious to gases. When this stock gave out, due to mechanical breakage, we tried other insulation tubes only to have them melt down like glass. Prior to 1916, thickening was an art, and any accurate decision as to what size of machine to install to handle a given tonnage of a specific ore must have been one of those intuitive conclusions, based on both intimate and extensive acquaintance with thickners and ore pulps. Then in 1916 "knowledge of acquaintance," became "knowledge about" with the publication of the Coe and Clevenger paper.' The unit operation of thickening had graduated to the status of an engineering science. The fundamental similitude relationships for the two major phases of the operation were defined so clearly that batch tests on models as small as liter cylinders could serve to specify protypes as large as 325 ft in diameter.

The Quebrada Blanca copper/molybdenum prospect lies on a dissected plateau in the high Andes of Northern Chile. The Superior Oil-Falconbridge Group began exploration of the Property in 1977 under a joint venture foreign investment agreement with the Chilean government. Quebrada Blanca is a relatively high grade secondarily enriched porphry copper deposit. Primary mineralization occurred 38 million years ago and accompanied quartz monzonite intrusive. Early disseminated Primary mineralization was followed by hydrothermal mineralization, mineralized breccia, and post-mineral faulting. After supergene enrichment Quebrada Blanca was buried under late Tertiary gravels and then partially re-exposed in Quaternary time. During the past five years, a successful exploration program has developed an open-pit mining reserve, provided samples for bulk metallurgical testing, and located more than adequate supplies of water for future operations. The main orebody is amenable to conventional metallurgical treatment and contains more than 400 Mt (441 million st) of recoverable open-pit ore at about a 1:1 overall stripping ratio. The average millhead grade during the first six years of operations will exceed 1.5% Cu, plus recoverable molybdenum values. Several hundred million tons of additional reserves are available in the surrounding districts

In ten years the manganiferous iron ores of the Cuyuna District have become impor-tant in the iron industry. By Dec. 31, 1923, 4,735,806 tons had been produced. Dur-ing the war, the low-phosphorus black ores were in demand; now the high-phosphorus low,-silica brown ores are favored. It is estimated that the reserves of these ores are ample for some time. A RISE in less than ten years from obscurity into great prominence economically, tersely summarizes the history and status of the Cuyuna manganiferous iron ores. The Cuyuna district produces and ships mostly high-phosphorus iron ore, but the annual production of manganiferous iron ore is increasing rapidly and productions from individual mines are becoming more regular and more dependable as to grades and tonnages. This ore bids fair to become, shortly, the principal product of the district and is responsible for the present economic prominence of this district. The iron ores of the district have been described, by the author and others, in many publications and will not be discussed here. Lately the manganiferous iron ores have been given some attention, but the range and variations of chemical composition of the ores, the principal physical characteristics of the ores and their deposits, the relative importance of the different ores and their possibilities in future developments, and the life of the respective reserves have not been discussed. It is impossible to give all of this information with the positiveness necessary for it to constitute a reliable guide for investment or even for future mine development. Each property and each party presents a special case and deserves critical consideration. We are dealing with special ores and always with a set of new conditions. Sufficient information of a general nature can be given, however, to indicate the reason for and the trend of the presently augmented developments in the district.

The more familiar compositions of both the iron-carbon-chromium' and the iron-carbon-tungsten2 systems have been investigated with a degree of thoroughness which has permitted the construction of their three-dimensional equilibrium diagrams; and it is probable that these equilibrium diagrams are sufficiently accurate for the present metallo-graphic needs. Strangely enough, in spite of their importance, the alloys of iron, carbon and manganese apparently have not been investigated in the same systematic manner, and so far as is known, no three-component equilibrium diagram for this system is available. Even iron-carbon-nickel alloys3 have been studied rather more thoroughly; for these the solidus and liquidus surfaces have already been determined, but the solid transformations in this, as in the manganese system, have not been reported systematically. The present paper deals with the constitution at equilibrium of a series of 36 iron-carbon-manganese alloys of commercial purity limited by 1.5 per cent carbon and 15 per cent manganese, a range of compositions including most of the manganese steels. The temperature range of melting has not been determined, nor has the high-temperature (delta iron) ferrite equilibrium been included in the study, it being considered that the more important characteristics of the manganese steels are their ordinary transformations in the solid state. The delta iron region is almost certain to be a small tetrahedron not very different in magnitude or contour from that in the iron-carbon-nickel diagram. It is probably true

In many lines of engineering, much excellent standardization work had been done before the war but the war emphasized its importance and showed most clearly the need of cooperation to prevent the confusion caused by the promulgation of overlapping standards by independent bodies. The American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, American Institute of Electrical Engineers, American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and American Society for Testing Materials, recognizing the value of what had been done, invited the Government Departments of War, Navy and Commerce to appoint representatives to act with them to continue this work; the body so formed is the American Engineering Standards Committee. It has required time to definitely formulate its objects and to arrange methods for accomplishing them that would be effective without interfering with the many organizations that have been doing such excellent work in this line. The American Engineering Standards Committee has just completed and adopted a revision of its Constitution, which has been sent to the Governing Boards of all the Departments and Societies represented on the Committee with a request for its ratification. The new Constitution changes the name to American Engineering Standards Association as more fittingly indicating the wide scope of the interests involved. The objects of the association are stated as follows: 1. To unify and simplify the methods. of arriving at engineering standards, to secure cooperation between various organizations and to prevent duplication of standardization work. 2. To promulgate rules for the development and adoption of standards, 3. To receive and pass upon recommendations for standards submitted as provided in the Rules of Procedure, but not to initiate, define, or develop the details of any particular standard. 4. To act as a means of intercommunication between organizations and individuals interested in the problems of standardization. 5. To give an international status to approved American engineering standards. 6. To cooperate with similar organizations in other countries and to promote international standardization.

Some years ago it was my good fortune to inspect some coal properties in Germany, and the most striking impression I received on my trip was that in that country every one in the coal industry, miners and operators, was proud of the fact-not apologetic about it-and that industrially coal was looked upon as a King. The explanation, of course, was that at least 90 per cent of the entire mineral value produced in Germany was from coal, and that it was the very foundation of the nation's industrial life. The feeling was so different from that existing in the United States among those engaged in producing coal that it made a profound impression on me, and many times since then I have speculated about the reasons for the difference in opinion in the two countries. Here, of course, our units are much smaller and more numerous, there is not so large a proportion of technically trained men, and we have the American trait of depreciating the things we do at home; but among those not actively

FOR many years the copper-bearing steels have been of considerable interest to the metallurgist because of their corrosion-resistant properties. More recently the discovery of their definite age-hardening characteristics has focused attention on them again. In a recent paper, Smith and Palmer(1)? have given an admirable description of the behavior of a considerable number of steels of this type and a study of their results suggests two questions, of a more or less fundamental sort. In the first place, it has been plainly shown that the hardening effect of added copper does not increase up to the maximum solubility of copper in iron as given by earlier investigators, but reaches its greatest value considerably below this point. This fact suggests that either the solubil-ity is not, so great as previous investigators have stated, or that the age-hardening mechanism is not the simple precipitation phenomenon that has been postulated. In the second place, the nature of the aging mechanism in this partic-ular system should be determined. Recent developments in the study of age-hardening processes have shown that the increase of hardness is often, but not always, accompanied by precipitation and the action of a particular system is not predictable on the basis of its components or type of phase diagram. It would be of considerable interest to study the aging of the iron-rich iron-copper alloys in detail. One would like to know whether the aging mechanism is different at high and low aging tempera-tures, and whether the extreme sluggishness of the system may perhaps represent some new type of aging process.

The term "splint" seems to have been adopted to describe the fracture of the hard bituminous coals of West Virginia. It is not a scientific name, but rather a trade term, and does not indicate a correspondence with English splint. At present it is a popular word, and is very loosely applied to coals of various qualities, in the desire & improve their sale. The Kanawha splint is distinguished by its hardness, dull lustre, coarse fibrous structure, its purity, and especially its resistance to atmospheric influence. It kindles very readily, burns with a bright flame, but does not cake, so that a lump when half consumed, may be broken by a slight blow in its plane of cleavage, though it will resist a strong blow in any other direction. THE binary system lead-antimony has been the subject of compre-hensive investigations in these laboratories by Dean1 and his associates. The effect of a third constituent on this system, particularly on the lead-rich alloys in which dispersion hardening ,was found, has a commercial value as well as an academic interest. This paper covers the effect of the addition of copper, bismuth and tin, all of which are likely to be found in commercial lead-antimony alloys, and is divided into three parts, as follows: I. The System Lead-Antimony-Copper II. The System Lead-Antimony-Bismuth III. The Lead Corner of the System Lead-Antimony-Tin These three systems are of three different types, and hence may be considered as covering three general kinds of additions. Bismuth forms no compounds with either lead or antimony and forms solid solutions with both. Copper forms several compounds with antimony as well as solid solutions but with lead it forms a two liquid layer system and no appreciable solid solution. Tin is soluble in both lead and antimony in the solid state and also forms a compound with antimony. The effect of small amounts of bismuth on the lead-antimony alloys is small, having no appreciable effect on the solubility of antimony.
