Surveying what was done in 1929 in meeting problems of oil-field equipment corrosion, one is struck by the fact that fewer meetings were held for discussion of these problems and fewer papers written than in any year since the subject engaged the attention of petroleum engineers. This does not mean that progress has not been made, for a great deal actually has been accomplished. Recommendations that accompanied field reports have been put into actual trial and some results obtained are gratifying. The type of papers prepared also has undergone a change, for they now deal with things accomplished rather than recite damages and suggest possible remedies. Some of the most notable work pointing the way for future solution of many pipe line problems is that done for the U. S. Bureau of Standards by Dr. K. H. Logan and Dr. Gordon N. Scott, dealing with tests of pipe coatings and reports on soil conditions. Many facts of great importance have been isolated and defined by these two men, not only indicating what may be done in some instances to retard corrosion, but showing that things formerly considered of importance have little bearing apparently upon the practical results. All-aluminum Storage Tanks In April, 1928, an all-aluminum 500-bbl. field storage tank was put into actual field use in Crane County, Texas, together with another tank of the same capacity but made with steel bottom and lower section of side sheets and aluminum upper ring of side sheets and deck. In April, 1929, after a little over one year's use these tanks were opened and examined by a group of engineers and chemists. The results of the test were enlightening. Other tanks made entirely of steel and used in the same battery with the two test tanks had some of their side and bottom sheets destroyed by corrosion in six to nine months, but the all-aluminum tank was in actual use for 18 months before holes were found corroded through the bottom, when the tank was examined for a second time in September, 1929. DEFORMATION of cold-rolled fcc metals and alloys produces one or the other of two types of rolling textures, usually referred to as the copper type or the brass type. The pure fcc metals, with the exception of silver, develop the copper-type texture when rolled at room temperature. Silver, brass, and many other alloys develop the brass-type texture. Transition from one texture type to another can also occur. Solute additions to pure copper cause a transition from the copper-type to the brass-type texture.' Varying the deformation temperature also produces texture transitions. Copper rolled at -196°C developed the brass-type texture2 and silver rolled at elevated temperatures, 200°C, developed the copper-type texture.374 The work of Haessner,' Smallman and Green,6 and Hu and coworkers3'4 seems to have established an apparent correlation between the type of rolling texture (and the texture transition) and the stacking-fault probability. Thus materials with low stacking-fault energies are thought to develop the brass-type texture while high stacking-fault energy materials develop the copper-type texture. Mikkola and cohen7 measured by X-ray diffraction techniques the stacking-fault probability, a, in the ordered and disordered fcc alloy Cu3Au. Unexpectedly, ordered specimens showed about twice the stacking-fault probability as the disordered ones. Marcinkowski and Zwe118 also found stacking faults in ordered Cu,Au, but not in the disordered CusAu. More recently, Camanzi and coworkers9 have shown that the intrinsic stacking-fault energy of Cu3Au undergoes a considerable decrease (approximately 100 ergs per sq cm) when passing from the disordered to the ordered phase. In general, deformation reduces order'' but some of our measurements showed that some long-range order still remains in Cu3Au after cold reduction by rolling 80 pct. From the above considerations Cu3Au offers the possibility of studying the texture transition in fcc alloys without varying either the temperature or the composition. If the stacking-fault energy correlation is correct, an initially ordered alloy should develop the brass-type texture during rolling while a disordered alloy should develop the copper-type texture. The present communication describes some initial results of experiments designed to investigate this possibility. The rolling textures of ordered and disordered Cu3Au samples were determined after various amounts of deformation. The ordered sample had an initial long-range-order parameter of S = 1, determined from X-ray diffraction. The grain size of both the ordered and disordered samples was the same, and the initial textures of both were also identical and approximately random. No obvious differences in the deformation textures of the ordered and disordered materials were detected up to 35 pct reduction and the (111) pole figures of Fig. 1 resemble that of pure copper. However, with reduction larger than 35 pct and less than 50 pct, a marked deviation from the copper texture was noted in the ordered material. One of the most common basic open-hearth furnace products is a simple carbon steel with a carbon range from 0.05 to 0.15 per cent. The material is widely used for sheets, tubes, bars, wire and the innumerable special objects of secondary fabrication. The properties of the material vary over wide ranges, depending on the more exact composition and details of manufacture or treatment that affect its structure. The present paper is a review of those properties and structures that have been found by studying this steel as used in the cap screw industry. At first glance this might be thought a narrow application of the steel, but, since the industry uses the material in the cold-worked, annealed and heat-treated conditions, the title of the paper may be excused for its comprehensiveness. Yet, in studying the wide ranges of properties and structures that preclude a more specific title, there can be no suggestion of completeness or finality. Even a summary of a few years' work is no more than a preliminary survey of a field that will be fertile in scientific data and industrial products for many years to come. An outline of the structures will be given first, then a list of the previous contributions that are at hand and finally some details of the work and related problems, especially concerning this low-carbon steel in the surface-hardened condition. Wire Used in Manufacture of Cap Screws The wire that is used for making cold-upset and roll-threaded cap screws has been cold-drawn from hot-rolled rods that were pickled and limed. The common sizes used in the industry range from 0.185 to 0.750 in. dia., the exact diameters depending on the plant practice and having the usual tolerances of 0.002 in. for the smaller sizes and 0.003 in. for the larger sizes. The carbon range, by pit analysis, is usually between 0.07 and 0.12 per cent. Manganese should be within the usual 0.30 to 0.50 per cent. range. Sulfur rarely exceeds 0.045 per cent. and phosphorus seldom exceeds 0.030 per cent. Silicon is usually below 0.03 per cent. but in the silicon-killed steels may be in the customary 0.10 to 0.25 per cent. range. Rimmed steel is not considered most suitable for cap screws that are cold-headed or for parts that are to be surface-hardened.

(communication to the Secretary*).¬I assume that where this valuable paper states, near its end, that "it is not possible to establish a market price, " the author means that no particular price which will fit all conditions and fields can be given. I am not in agreement with Mr. Wyer, however, that the actual value of natural gas leaseholds is "largely a matter of opinion." I would even be willing to express myself very strongly as believing that if we, as experts, cannot give anything closer than a mere opinion, our testimony or reports are not of great value to our clients. I believe, moreover, that by detailed geological examinations and with our latest knowledge of geological structure, principles of natural gas occurrence, etc., we can approach just as near a certainty in natural gas valuations as we can in oil valuations, and much more so than in the valuation of many metal prospects, in which only the upper few feet of the vein has been opened. In other words, we are getting nearer and nearer every year to bringing geology as applied to oil and gas development into the class of an exact science. Mr. Wyer's paper gives an excellent outline for methods of leasehold valuation. Being presumably intended as an outline only, it can be expanded indefinitely by a detailed discussion of the methods of valuation for the four different classes of leaseholds which he mentions: (A) "Producing;" (B) "Protective;" (C) "Reserve;" and (D) "Prospective." This classification is probably as good as can be made in practice. In the producing leaseholds in particular it is easy to establish a market price at which these leaseholds should be bought or sold. The question would arise in any case whether or not the leases are connected with a pipe line or the distance from the pipe line. Assuming that a pipe line already taps the property and that gas is already being sold for a certain figure, this price must be multiplied by the number of thousand cubic feet still "in sight" in the ground, from which is to be deducted (a) bonuses, (b) rentals, (c) royalties, (d) cost of drilling, (e) taxes and

The results of this investigation show that in the system SnTe-PbTe l) the solid solutions have small exothermic heats of formation relative to the binary compounds, 2) solid-solution hardening is almost absent, 3) the tin and lead atoms are .randomly distributed on the sublattice occupied by them and do not undergo an ordering transition during a thermal treatment designed to promote such a transition, and 4) the lattice parameter changes linearly with composition. These findings suggest that the solid solutions of tin telluride and lead telluride approach ideal behavior. THE binary compounds SnTe and PbTe form a continuous series of solid solutions.' Information on several physical properties of these solid-solution alloys has been published.1"3 In the work reported here, the heats of formation, microhardness, and lattice parameters of these alloys have been measured and the possibility of an order-disorder transition has been investigated. Order-disorder transitions occur in some solid solutions of binary compounds. In the system Bi2Te3-BizSes, for example, the electropositive bismuth atoms and the electronegative tellurium and selenium atoms always occupy separate layers. In the disordered alloy Bi2Te2Se, the tellurium and selenium atoms are randomly distributed on the layers occupied by them, while in the ordered alloy they occupy distinct layers.4 The NaC1-type (Bl) structure of SnTe-PbTe alloys consists of two sublattices, one of which is occupied by the electropositive tin and lead atoms and the other by the electronegative tellurium atoms; any ordering would be expected to occur in the sublattice occupied by the tin and lead atoms. PREPARATION OF SPECIMENS Polycrystalline specimens of PbTe and Sn1-xPbxTe (x = 0.25, 0.50, and 0.75) were prepared by melting stoichiometric amounts of lead (99.999 pct), tin (99.98 pct), and tellurium (99.999 pct) in evacuated and sealed Vycor tubes. Because of the deviation of tin telluride from the stoichiometric composition5 this compound was prepared by melting 49.8 at. pct Sn and 50.2 pct Te. The tubes containing the melts were quenched into water; the solidified ingots were removed from the tubes and annealed for 2 weeks in vacuum (PbTe approximately 100°C below its melting point, the three alloys 100°C below their solidus tem-

In connection with law suits between mining companies at Bingham, Utah, a few years ago, the writer made petrographic studies of more than 1400 rock and mineral samples in thin sections, and also careful studies of their field relations. In petrographic studies, even when an area is studied intensively, attention is commonly centered very largely on the unusual features of special interest, so that the relative abundance of rock types (or minerals or textures) can only be determined by a study of map areas outlined largely by field methods, and cannot be based directly on microscopic work. It is very uncommon, and usually impossible, to take samples at regular short intervals along and across formations. It is precisely because such methods were used at Ringham that the work presents a rare opportunity for determining, on a microscopic basis, the relative abundance of rock types and the continuity of gradations between rock types. At the same time, a study was made of the alteration of sediments under the influence of igneous intrusions, with results that are believed to be of interest and importance. • Sandstone-limestone Gradation The sedimentary rocks of the Bingham district are chiefly sandstones, with some beds of limestone, all now lying with their strike nearly east and their dip nearly north at an angle of about 30°, near the surface. The limestone beds are remarkably irregular in thickness in some places, but usually change very slowly in composition along the strike. However, the most interesting results are obtained from a study of a section across the beds at right angles to the strike. In some places, such sections show the usual alternation of pure sandstone with nearly pure limestone, in the simple manner assumed in most geological discussions.

The principles on which an art is founded are usually few and necessarily basic in nature, but he who wishes to achieve the power to select his aides and give success to important undertakings that may be entrusted to him in the future must ordinarily undergo years of drudgery in order to gain the experience that will enable him to distinguish such fundamentals through the haze of reenforcing detail that clothes and tends to disguise them. This especially applies to those who would dream dreams that may come partly true. Professor Henry B. Cornwall of Princeton was a graduate of Freiberg with mining experience in Mexico. He was my friend and mentor during my college life. In 1883 I finished my postgraduate course and had two offers of work to consider. His advice is very clear in my mind today. It was essentially as follows: I know something of the mines of Mexico and have crossed through the mountains of the West. The West possesses a vast area of mountain and valley. California has long had its gold mines, the Comstock and Gilpin County followed and now comes the discovery of Leadville. I believe the West, will become a great mining country. You can choose now to teach here or go to the mountains. Were I in your place I would go West and identify myself with mining.

IN the late 1920's rotary drills began to replace the churn drills in the petroleum industry, but until the middle 1940's the churn drill was the only widely accepted means of drilling large-diameter blastholes for quarry operations. The Calcite plant of the Michigan Limestone Div., U. S. Steel Corp., was one of the first to experiment with rotary drills for quarry blasthole drilling, and the first to employ compressed air on a fully rotary rig to cool the bit and raise the cuttings to the collar of the blasthole.

THE elimination of metalloids in the open-hearth process depends on oxidation of the metal by diffusion of FeO from the slag (or absorption of FeO by the metal), with subsequent reaction between dissolved iron oxide and the metalloids carbon, manganese, phosphorus, and silicon. During an investigation on deoxidation with silicon, data on rate of oxidation of the metal were obtained, and these combined with certain other information, are presented here in an attempt to show the fundamental principles governing the diffusion of FeO from slag to metal. Inasmuch as the aim of the investigation was not a study of diffusion, certain data are lacking and it has been necessary to make assumptions on metal viscosity and effect of temperature on diffusion. These factors are known to exert a considerable effect on diffusional processes. Overoxidation, or supersaturation of the metal with iron oxide, is not taken up in this paper. Overoxidation has little effect on diffusion except under a few special conditions, and the discussion has therefore been limited to diffusional processes. Though the results given in this paper should be regarded as preliminary, certain of the conclusions drawn are definitely applicable to any steelmaking process.

The human respiratory tract is an apparatus for the interchange of gases between the air and the blood. An important part of it are mechanisms to prevent the apparatus from becoming clogged with dust particles that are inhaled with the air. These mechanisms are adequate to protect the organ against most dusts, but silica and at least one of the silicates, asbestos, are tissue poisons which initiate changes in the connective tissues of the lung, incompatible with function. Silica is concentrated by the phagocytes in contact with the connective tissues of the lymphatic drainage system. An overgrowth of connective tissue occurs which interferes with the function of this system. More dust that may be inhaled can no longer be effectively eliminated from the lung. It accumulates in the functioning part of the organ and excites the formation of characteristic fibrous nodules and bands. These changes seriously impair the respiratory function. The shadows of such changes cast upon an X-ray film of the lung are discussed. The reaction to silica in the lung produces a marked increased susceptibility to tuberculous infection. It can be reproduced and studied in the experimental animal and has been observed repeatedly in human beings. Asbestos dust also causes fibrosis in the lungs but the mechanism of its development is different. The fibrous dust settles along the irregular walls of the terminal bronchioles. In this location it excites the formation of cuffs of scar tissue. This contracts and shuts down the tubes, resulting in a collapse of the air spaces distal to the obstruction. Such a condition in itself is a cause of fibrosis. The two causes, immediate reaction to the dust and collapse of the finer air spaces, bring about a generalized diffuse fibrosis. This reaction is not so regularly associated with increased susceptibility to tuberculosis as with silicosis. The case against sericite as a cause of silicosis has not been proved. Experimentally, sericite-free quartz will produce nodular fibrosis. Silicon carbide and aluminum oxide are quite inert in the normal animals. The former apparently increases susceptibility to tuberculosis in animals but whether the same is true in human beings awaits demonstration.

A glance into the immediate future of the refining industry, and a retrospective view of 1929, cannot fail to emphasize the need for effective measures of control of refinery still runs. With oil producers alert to the need for control of the crude supply, it has become more than ever necessary for refiners to complete the movement toward stabilization by concerted determination to maintain still run schedules within the limitations prescribed by the demand for gasoline. The outlook for continued growth in the demand for gasoline appears to be well sustained by a preliminary survey of requirements for 1930. In fact, it is apparent that the industry will be assured of a market for gasoline that will aggregate in volume at least 472,000,000 bbl. this year. This indicates a gain in total demand over 1929 of about 9 per cent. or about 4.6 per cent, less than the gain recorded during 1929 over 1928, which amounted to 13.6 per cent. Despite the indicated increase in gasoline demand this year, it is apparent that little, if any, more crude will be required than last year. This is shown in Table 1, presenting estimates of gasoline demand and probable crude requirements for 1930. The Elk City district is in north-central Idaho about 60 miles east of Grangeville and near the headwaters of the South Fork of the Clearwater River (Fig. 1). At the height of its boom in the early sixties, Elk City had a population of more than 2000 people, Published estimates of the placer production from the district range from $10,000,000 to $18,500,000. Although the first quartz-vein location was made as early as 1870, very little gold was extracted from quartz ores until after the completion of the American Eagle mill in 1902. Between 1902 and 1932 a total of from $750,000 to $1,000,000 was taken from about six properties. General Geology Distribution of Rocks Banded gneiss (Fig. 2) is the most aburldant bedrock in the Elk City district. It is interbedded with schist and quartzite and ill some places these rocks have been intruded by sills and dikes. Banded gneiss prevails in the western part of the area whereas schist prevails to the southeast. Augen gneiss occurs for the most part as irregular bodies, which lie transverse to the trend of the banded gneiss and schist. It is largely confined to two areas; one of which extends from east of the American Eagle mine westward as far as the Black Pine mine, a total distance of about five miles, and another area of about two square miles in the vicinity of the California-Idaho placer mine. Quartzite is fairly abundant. In addition to the bands of the latter interbedded with gneiss and schist, some large lenses crop out in the southeastern part of the dik-trict near the southern contact of the area underlain by granodiorite. Granodiorite crops out over a large area and extends northeastward

The problem of mine pumping is so much affected by local conditions, and those conditions are so liable to changes during the life of a mine, that the best system to use is difficult to determine. The experience of the writer has been that, in general, for copper mines, electric pumping is most satisfactory unless the quantity of water to be pumped is great or the mine does not use electric power for any other purpose. As a rule, however, figuring on the cost of necessary power plant, the total cost of installation is greater with electric pumps than steam pumps. As the water is liable to be gritty, outside-packed plunger pumps are to be recommended, and if the water is not acid, or only slightly so, chilled cast-iron plungers pay for their extra cost very quickly in diminished cost of packing. With chilled plungers it is possible to use metallic packing instead of soft packing, if the water is not too gritty or the lift too high. In vertical pumps this packing is satisfactory for lifts up to 400 ft., in the experience of the writer, and may be found satisfactory for higher lifts. For water slightly acid, cement-lined pump bodies have given good satisfaction. For acid water, both plungers and puhp bodies should be made of acid-resisting bronze. For high lifts, especially with gritty water, a satisfactory pump valve is difficult to find. To reduce the unbalanced pressure on the valve at time of opening it is advisable to have narrow seats; this, however, brings high pressures on the seats when the valve is closed. On large valves for lifts of 600 to 1,000 ft. we have used leather, hard rubber, vulcanized fiber, and soft brass; for clear water the latter has given best satisfaction. The difficulties due to grit make it advisable to have large sumps where water can settle, and if possible, to have two of them so that they can be cleaned alternately. At the mines of the Old Dominion Copper Mining & Smelting Co., Globe, it was found that a small air ejector discharging into a mine car provides a very convenient way to clean mud and sand from a sump.

The simultaneous segregation of two solutes during the directional solidification of an ingot is treated mathematically on the basis of simplifying assumptions. Expressions are derived for the difference in concentration of two solutes, and for the location and concentration gradient of a pn barrier formed in a semiconductor by the segregation of a donor and an acceptor. THE problem of normal segregation of a single solute during the freezing of an alloy has been treated mathematically by a number of investigators. Gulliver' showed that coring increases the quantity of eutectic above that to be expected at equilibrium, for a system having limited solid solubility and, on the basis of simplifying assumptions, calculated the fraction of eutectic to be expected. Scheuer2 expressed composition of solid solution in terms of a distribution coefficient and the fraction solidified and compared experiment with calculation for the systems A1-Cu, Al-Zn, Cu-Sn, Cu-Zn. Hayes and Chipman,3 in a detailed study of segregation in a low carbon, rimming steel ingot, calculated distribution coefficients for a number of solutes in iron, compared calculated and experimental segregation curves, and discussed the effects of process variables such as rate of solidification and stirring. In the present paper a mathematical analysis is made of the simultaneous segregation of two solutes during the orderly freezing of a solid solution system, with particular emphasis on the difference in solute concentrations. Although the analysis is quite general and can be applied to the segregation of minor elements in alloys, it is directed in particular at the solidification of a semiconductor containing a donor and an acceptor. Normal segregation has unique aspects in a semiconductor, because of the ways in which donors and acceptors affect the electrical properties. The difference between two solute concentrations becomes of importance, as does also the gradient of the difference where the difference goes through zero, this being the concentration gradient of excess carriers at a pn barrier. A primary object of this paper is to extend the mathematical treatment of segregation to include these newer aspects which are of particular significance for semiconductors. One property of interest is the electrical conduc- tivity, which arises from the presence of donors 'or acceptors in solid solution. The conductivity may be either n-type or p-type depending on whether donors or acceptors, respectively, are in atomic excess. For both germanium and silicon, elements of Group V of the Periodic System, such as P, As, and Sb, are donors and elements of Group 111, as B, Al, In, and Ga, are acceptors.4-6 If a donor or acceptor is present alone in solid solution, the conductivity is proportional to its concentration." If both a donor and an acceptor are present, then the conductivity is proportional to the difference in their atomic concentrations. If the donor and acceptor segregate at different rates then a pn barrier in certain circumstances may form at some point in the ingot. Accordingly, equations are derived and illustrated which express the effect of segregation on: 1—the concentration of a single solute with a discussion of the assumptions; 2—the difference between two solute concentrations and means for minimizing its variation in an ingot; and 3—the location and concentration gradient of a pn barrier. The analysis is applicable to processes in which the entire charge is melted and then progressively frozen from one end. The method in which an ingot is solidified in a crucible7 and that in which a solidifying rod is pulled from the melt8 both fall into this category. Segregation of One Solute If a cylinder of molten alloy is caused to freeze slowly from one end, a normal segregation of solutes will usually occur, producing a lengthwise concentration gradient in the ingot. Depending on whether a solute raises or lowers the melting point of the solvent, it will become concentrated in the first or last regions, respectively, to freeze. If it is assumed that freezing is such that there is no diffusion of solute in the solid, complete diffusion in the liquid, and that k, the distribution coefficient, defined as the ratio of solute concentration in the just-freezing solid to that in the liquid, is constant, then the

Part one of this article, published in the September 1976 issue of MINING ENGINEERING, described procedures for analytically evaluating the physical and chemical properties of an ore; it also described various types of equipment that are available to the minerals engineer for designing required comminution operations. Part Two of this article illustrates the practical application of these principles to the design of a sound comminution system for a known set of ore characteristics. This exercise is aimed at giving the young engineer a review of the methods and procedures that are available for designing comminution systems.
