Discussion of the paper by CHARLES A. MITKE, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 105, September, 1915, pp. 1941 to 1958. GERALD SHERMAN, Bisbee, Ariz.-Mr. Mitke justly might have made much stronger his claim for increase in efficiency of labor due to the introduction of forced ventilation. The product per man shift in stoping in the Gardner division has practically doubled. While it is true that improved methods have been responsible for a great part of this gain, and what is due to better ventilation cannot be definitely known, yet it is also true that the results could not have been obtained in that division as it was in 1912. . The paper discusses the two systems of ventilation in use, exhaust and pressure. In both the object is the same, to take foul air or gas out of the mine by the most direct course and replace it by fresh. In coal mines, the exhaust system is in almost universal use, and since the most advanced work in ventilation has been in that class of mines, it was naturally the first one to be considered. It has the advantage of leaving all adits, shafts, or other openings free for use. Doors are only needed to direct the course of the air, and not to confine it. Its disadvantages appear in case of fire, or if the ground over the mine is much broken by subsidence. The fan must work in gas in the case of a -fire, and may be. damaged or destroyed either by heat or by corrosive gas. At the time of the fire in the Lowell division of the Copper Queen, a small exhaust fan was placed over a ventilating raise, but the vanes and housing were destroyed by sulphurous gases within a few weeks. If the ground above the mined area is much broken, as is frequently the case when the ore deposit is thick vertically, a good deal of air is likely to pass through it, particularly if it is near the surface. Leakage from this source is a loss to the exhaust system by short circuiting, which is exaggerated by a contraction or block in the air course. It serves as an added outlet in the pressure system. This is strikingly shown at the United Verde, where many jets of steam may be seen coming up through the ground above the stoped country on a cold day.

Up to the present time, according to Hansenl and Haughton,² the constitution of the bismuth-indium system has not yet been published. The generally accepted value for the melting point of indium, as listed in most scientific journals and textbooks, is 155°C. Recently, however, H. M. Davis3 has determined a new melting point for indium of 157.3²C O.l°C. Since bismuth has been used in preponderance as an alloying element in the majority of low-melting alloys, and indium has been used with considerable success in lowering the melting points of low-melting alloys, 4,6 an interest has been developed in the application of these two metals, making a complete knowledge of the constitution of its alloys desirable. In this investigation, the melting point of indium reported by H. M. Davis has been found to be substantially correct. A value of 157. ²°C ± O.5°C was determined. The two eutectic compositions have been placed at 34 and 50 pct bismuth with their respective eutectic temperatures as 72.4°C ± 0.5°C and 90°C ± 0.5°C. The bismuth-indium phase diagram has been determined by thermal and microscopic analysis and is shown in Fig I. Thermal Analysis Granulated bismuth and indium shot, having a guaranteed purity of 99.99 and 99.95 pct, respectively, were melted in a carbon crucible by means of a laboratory heater. To minimize oxidation of the alloys, a heavy mineral oil (Nujol) having a high- flash point was used. A platinum-platinum rhodium thermocouple of fine wire encased in a thin-walled Pyrex glass tube, about 1/8 in. in diameter, was connected to a type K potentiometer for temperature measurements. The thermocouple was calibrated against the melting points of tin, bismuth, and the silver-copper eutectic and the boiling point of water. Since the temperature readings could be reproduced to 0.²°Cl and the accuracy of the temperature standards in this range is slightly better than 0.5°C, it scems reasonable to assume that the temperature readings are reliable to approximately 0.5°C. The cooling rate could be controlled by varying the amount of insulation surrounding the crucible. Three or four layers of asbestos paper, 1/16 in. thick, sufficed to give a cooling rate of from I° to ²°C per minute. Undercooling was slightly noticeable. This condition was minimized by vigorous stirring, since the advantage of using slower rates was too small to justify the greater expenditure

APPLICATION of diffusion laws in the customary form to experimental studies in binary metallic solid solutions has shown the diffusion coefficient to vary with concentration for all systems investigated. The factors determining this variation have not been ascertained. However, the question of whether the diffusion coefficient would become a constant, independent of concentration throughout a single phase if the concentration gradient in the diffusion equation were replaced by an activity gradient has been an attractive subject for speculation. Wagner1 derived an expression for the force acting on a diffusing particle in terms of the chemical potential. This was also the approach chosen by Jost2 in his monograph. From a somewhat different point of view, Eyring3 and his co-workers have used activity gradients when dealing with diffusion in concentrated nonideal solutions. The only actual test with experimental data is that given by Darken,4 though this is more qualitative than quantitative. Many others opposed the application in any way of thermodynamic concepts to kinetic phenomena, including diffusion processes. A rigorous examination of this principle requires good data expressing the relationship between activity and concentration for solid solutions for which reliable diffusion work has been done. The literature provides such information only for the interstitial solution of carbon in gamma iron (austenite) and for the substitutional copper-zinc solutions (alpha brass). Activity data for carbon in austenite at 800°C and 1000°C are available from the recent work of Smiths on the equilibrium of hydrogen-methane and carbon monoxide-carbon dioxide mixtures with gamma iron. Combining these with the diffusion studies of Wells and Mehl6 makes possible a quantitative test for this interstitial solid solution. The vapor-pressure determinations for zinc over brass by Hargreaves7 allowed the calculation of activities in this system over a wide range of temperatures and concentrations. Extensive investigation of diffusion in this substitutional solid solution has been carried out by Rhines and Mehl.8 ACTIVITIES IN BRASS9 If the vapor phase of zinc is assumed to behave as an ideal gas, any solid or liquid solutions that are in equilibrium with the same partial pressure of zinc at the same temperature have the same thermodynamic activity of zinc. In order to assign a numerical value to the activity azn, it is necessary to choose some standard reference state to which an activity value of unity is arbitrarily assigned. It is customary to choose the liquid or solid state of the pure material. Then azn is defined numerically by azn = Pza/Pzn° [I]

A new approach to the measurement of the size distribution of particulate structures imbedded in opaque bodies is developed. The method is based upon the assumption of a general two-parameter distribution curve, and the estimation of these two parameters from three well-known counting measurements made upon metallogvaphic sections. The total number of particles in the system is also a product of the analysis. Application of the method with the assumption of the logarithmiconorma1 disfribution function is developed in detail. A complete description of the geometry of a particulate structure requires the determination of the size distribution of particles. The problem of estimating the size distribution of particles of a particular phase in a multiphase system, or the grain-size distribution in a homogeneous system, has been approached by many investigators.'-'0 All of the solutions proposed by these investigators share the following characteristics. a) A minimum of several hundred particle sections in the microstructure must be examined, and some characteristic dimension recorded, such as area,3'5 intercept length,6"9 or diameter.1'2'4'10 b) The resulting data must undergo a series of fairly complex calculations to generate the empirical histogram which describes the size distribution in three dimensions. c) In order to manipulate the result, the histogram must be fitted to some assumed mathematical formula, using the attendant statistical procedures. d) With two notable exceptions,8,10 the particles must be spherical. The measurements and calculations involved are in general very tedious and time-consuming, with the logical result that much effort has been expended in the development of equipment which will perform these tasks automatically and semiautomati-cally.9,11-15 considerable success has been achieved in this area, but the equipment is in general expensive, and usually places stringent requirements On the quality of microstructure which can be reliably analyzed. In laboratories which do not possess such equip- ment, the analysis of geometry is usually limited to measuring total properties of the microstructures, such as volume fraction and interfacial area, because the measurements required are much simpler to make. The determination of size distributions rarely is undertaken. The development which is presented in this paper permits the estimation of size distributions of three-dimensional structures from the same simple counting measurements which are required to determine the surface area and volume fraction of the particulate structure, and one other counting measurement. The basic approach that is used is to assume a general mathematical form for the distribution, which is described by two parameters (as the normal distribution is described by assigning values to the mean and the standard deviation), and then estimate these two parameters from the results of the counting measurements. The introduction of a third counting measurement also permits the evaluation of the number of particles per unit volume, Nv.

A recent survey of existing analytical results, and an attempt to correlate them with each other and with the known history and behavior of the samples, indicated that none of the commonly applied methods could be considered established as intrinsically reliable. It was. therefore, desired to attempt to establish the reliahility of some one method by external evidence. If this were to be accomplished, other methods could then be evaluated in terms of the method establibhed. The correct method was accordingly to be chosen without regard for cost, speed, or convenience; with the requirements for routine application to be reserved for 1ater consideration. The method of total combustion was chosen and submitted to a limited number of tests against primary standard samples. Considerable experimental difficulty was encountered, indicating that additional work on the experimental arrangements is desirable. While the work to (late by no means represents a completed investigation, it is helieved that the combustion method is basically sound and that its development should be continued. Choice of Method Of the several available methods, mechanical disintegration. electrochemical methods'2'3 modifications of the Sieverts experiment,% and vacuum fusion, were all judged to contain one or more factors of un- certainty not at present completely cvaluated or suhject to complete control. These methods, therefore, were considered currently unsuitable for referee purposes. Solid evolution was considered to be of doubtful significance when conducted in the alpha range. A reasonable chance for a true analysis was found for evolution in the gamma range. Preliminary tests have indicated a very slow rate for evolutioll from gamma iron. indicating a running time of possibly 100 hr. for a one-centimeter sample. Difliculty in distinguishing such slow. evolution from blank gas was anticipated, hence the method was not consitlerctl the most suitable for the present purpose. The combustion method was evaluated as being most sound on fundamental principles. The only important unknown would be to determine that the iron oxide formed did not occlude water at the tcmperaturv of the combustion.with the odvious precautions of using a sound and clean specimen, providing a system sufficiently tight to give acceptable blanks in longtime runs, and providing a suficicntly sensitive measuring system, reasonable, precise, and truthful analytical results could be logically expected. Apparatus The equipment as originally operated is shown in Fig. I, and the glassw-are in its latest modification in Fig. 2. An experimental investigation of the thermal and mechanical responses of rock materials to laser radiation is described. Specifically, the following three topics have been studied in detail: 1. Temperature measurements on thin discs subjected to laser radiation. 2. Strain measurements on thin discs subjected to laser radiation. 3. Observation and evaluation of cracking and spalling phenomena in constrained and unconstrained thin discs respectively, subjected to laser radiation. In conjunction with the experimental work done, use was made of a heat flow analysis and a stress analysis program developed for this purpose. It was possible to theoretically predict the thermal and mechanical responses of a rock specimen to laser radiation and then compare them with experimental observations. Good correlations were obtained.

Expeximental viscosity and density data of lour natural gases are presented for temperatures from WO to 340F and pressures from 100 to 8.000 psia. A correlation is also discussed and results reported. INTRODUCTION This investigation is one of several efforts by the authors to provide viscosity data for pure hydrocarbons and mixtures. Results of some pure hydrocarbons and their mix tures have been presented." Several predictive methods and correlations have also been reported.'," This paper presents the experimental viscosity and density data of four natural gases and confirms a correlation in a previous study. APPARATUS The viscometer was described previously. 2,6 A bank of stainless steel pycnometers was included to determine density in conjunction with the viscosity measurements (Fig. I). DATA AND MATERIALS The natural gases were furnished by the Atlantic Richfield Co. (Samples 1 and 21, the Continental Oil Co. (Sample 3) and the Pan American Petroleum Corp. (Sample 4). Table 1 shows the composition of these gases obtained by mass spectrometer analysis. The pure component viscosity data used in the correlation have been published."".'"', '" Experimental and calculated viscosity data for the natural gases are presented in Tables 2 through 5. CORRELATION Starling and Ellington"' have reported several semi-empirical expressions based to a certain extent on the theory of viscosity advanced by Born and Green.' (4) Y = 1.11 -r 0.04 X ........(5) Over the pressure and temperature range studied in this investigation, this equation represents the data on methane, ethane, propane, n-butane and four methane-n-butane mixtures with a standard deviation* of ? 1.89 per cent. Density data by Sage and Lacey" were used to fit the equations. Eq. 2 gives reliable values of the viscosity of light hydrocarbons without prior knowledge of experimental viscosity values, but accurate density data must be available. Eq. 2 was used to predict viscosity values for the natural gases studied in this paper. The particular set of parameters contained in Eqs. 3 through 5 gave values that reproduced experimental data within 25 per cent. Needless to say, in using Eq. 2 better density values will give better viscosity results. However, those engineers who do not have accurate density values at hand or the time, or such facilities as a library, computer, etc. readily available, may feel uneasy in using Eq. 2. Therefore, the authors sought the easiest but by no means best density prediction method, which was reported by Kaf 30 years ago. A set of density values, which were calculated based on Kay's method, and a generalized compressibility factor chart were used to fit Eq. 2. The results are:

The first successful bucket-elevator dredge to operate in California was put in comnlisvion wt Oroville in March, 1898. There had been numerous previous attempts at dredging, but noue of the earlier boats proved a success. The gold-miners in California earl3 conceived the idea of a machine to dig gravel from the beds and bars of auriferous streams that were inaccessible by the methods then employed, and it was only a few months after the discovery of gold in California that such a machine was Shipped around Cape Horn from New York to San Francisco. Thij was, however, but the forerunner of many failures in gold-dredging, and was soon at the bottoni of the Sacramento river. During succeeding years many other unsuccessful attempts mere made, and it was not until 1897 that a dredge of the single-lift bucket-elevator type mas floated on the Yuba river. This dredge was built by the Risdon Iron Works for 12. H. Postlethwaite, and would probably have been a success if it had been operated on some of the rich Ororille ground

The value generally accepted for stacking-fault energy, of copper has been approximately 40 ergs per sq cm based on Fullman's2 value for the coherent twin-boundary energy and the assumption that is twice the twin boundary energy However, Thornton and coworkers8 determined that the lower limit of for copper is approximately 60 ergs per sq cm, based on measurements of dislocation-node radii. They suggested that the assumption of = 2t is invalid. It is the purpose of this note to present results which indicate that the values of obtained by measurement of twin-grain boundary intersections and the values obtained by measurement of dislocation-node radii are actually compatible. The most reliable values for of the a brasses, based on electron-microscope observation of dislocation nodes, are probably those values reported by Smallman and Green6 who applied the Siems correction (1961) to data obtained by Howie and Swann.3 These values shown in Fig. 1 give an extrapolated value of approximately 70 ergs per sq cm for pure copper. In the present work, Fullman's method for determining the stacking-fault energy of copper was extended to the a brasses. High-purity copper (99.999 pet) and high-purity zinc (99.999 pet) were mixed in proportioned amounts and melted in sealed and evacuated quartz tubes. The alloys were homogenized for a week at 750°C and chemically analyzed by means of X-ray fluorescence. These alloys, along with a specimen of pure copper, were rolled to 98 pet reduction and a thickness of 0.009 in., resealed, and annealed for 40 hr at 715°C. Values for the ratio of twin-boundary energy to the grain-boundary energy, it gb, were obtained from measurements of dihedral angles formed at the intersections of twin boundaries and grain boundaries by using Fullman's2 mechanical analogy of surface tensions acting at the intersection of an annealing twin and a grain boundary. The angles between the twin traces and the grain boundaries were measured for a large number of twin-grain boundary intersections at a magnification of X500 using a rotating mechanical stage on a Reichert metallograph. The rotary stage has a calibrated angle scale with vernier so that measurements can be made to 0.1 deg. The mean twin-grain boundary energy and standard deviation were calculated for copper and each of the brasses by the use of an IBM 7072 computer. It was found that the mean value of gb stabilized after approximately 100 twin-angle measurements. This was determined by plotting the mean against the number of angles measured. Since the measured angles deviate from true dihedral angles, a correction factor for grain orientation, discussed below, was applied. The stacking-fault energy was then calculated from these values and the values of grain-boundary energy derived by Taylor.7 The data obtained are tabulated in Table I. Values for stacking-fault energy are plotted in Fig. 1. The value of gb for the specimen of 1.03 pet Zn is close to the value obtained by Fullman2 for OFHC (99.98 pet) copper, 0.045. It is believed that the purity of the copper affects gb significantly. Drill pipe, and the connections used to join the pipe together, have had a long history of development and improvement. With the growing use of high tensile-strength pipe, the rotary shouldered connections used to join the lengths of drill pipe have become more critical. Fatigue-type failures of rotary-shouldered connections, or tool joints, have become a cause of much conern to operators and manufacturers. Most fatigue tests on tool joints have been made on the basis of bending moment applied vs number of cycles, rather than on the basis of stress vs cycles. A desire to learn more about the nature of stress in a tool joint due to bending caused a rather intensive experimental study to determine what actually happens to cause fatigue failure. It was known that a tool joint with insufficient make-up torque was subject to early fatigue failure. Therefore, the establishment of the relationship between make-up torque and allowable bending moment would enable a testing engineer to better correlate the results of various tests. The problem of calculating the stress in a tool joint due to an applied bending moment was complicated by: the effect of unknown stress concentrations; the applicability of the well known formula S = Mc/I; and the question of whether to use the combined cross section of the pin and box in calculating the moment of inertia I. TEST EQUIPMENT The test equipment consisted of the following. 1. A lathe modified to act as a fatigue machine for full-size tool joint or drill-collar specimens. 2. An adapter plate bolted to the headstock of the lathe and into which a short adapter was screwed. 3. Tool-joint pins on sections of drill collars bucked into the adapter. 4. A hydraulic load cylinder which rested on the bed of the lathe and applied bending moments to the joints. 5. Paper-backed strain gauges (FAP-12-12, 1/8-in. gauge length and A-5-1, 1/2-in. gauge length). 6. Eastman 910 contact cement for bonding gauges to joint and Epoxylite 222 waterproofing. 7. A 12-position switchbox, SR-4 bridge balancing unit connected to an SR-4 strain indicator to read the gauge output. 8. A four-channel Sanborn recorder, Model 150, was used as the readout instrument for part of the testing. The fatigue machine was well suited as a loading device. Because of the long lever arm available, the change of moment with distance was small; consequently, the vertical shear stress was small, less than 300 psi. Some difficulty was experienced with the hydraulic load cylinder at high bending moments due to leakage. The strain gauge equipment was simple and quite reliable. A 41/2-in. extra hole (E. H.) joint with "as machined" threads and shoulders and a 2 7/8-in. internal flush (I. F.) joint with copper-plated threads and shoulders were selected for testing because of their common usage in the field. In addition, the 4 1/2-in. E. H. was suitable because it had an inside diameter large enough to permit the insertion and accurate positioning of strain gauges without using special jigs, while the 2 7/8-in. I. F. joint required much lower bending loads to cause separation of the shoulders of the joint when made up to the recommended torque. The joints were made to standard API specifications, except for very small bevels on the box and pin shoulders and cylindrical stress-relief grooves added to the pins. Larger bevels would have

The formation of austenite from ferrite, ferrite plus retastable carbide, spheroidite, and pearlite has been studied in a series of irons, Fe-C alloys, and plain-carbon steels using fast heating techniques. In the absence of carbide, austenite nucleates at ferrite/ferrite grain boundaries; nucleation is followed by the rapid growth characteristic of a massive transfornation. The trarnsformation occurs at 950°C at heating rates of 106º C per sec and cannot be suppressed. Metastable carbide dissolves before austenite forms and does not influence the transformation kinetics. For spheroidite structures, austenite nucleates preferentially at the jinction between carbides and ferrite grain boundaries. Growth from these centers proceeds until the carbide is completely enveloped; subsequent growth occurs by carbon diffusion through the austenite envelope. For pearlite structures, austenite nucleates preferentially at pearlite colony intersections. Carbide la)?zellae dissolve at the advancing austenite interface but complete solution of carbide does not occur; the residtial carbide is eventually dissolvled or spheroid-ized depending on the carbon cuntent. The magnitude and temperature dependence of the austenite growth rate into Fe-C pearlite when incomplete carbide dissolution is assumed are satisfactorily explained by an approximate colume diffusion model. The impurities present in plain-carbon steel reduce the growth rate of austenite in comparison to that jound in an Fe-C alloy. The formation of austenite has been studied in much less detail than the decomposition of austenite. This is primarily a result of the importance of harden-ability in determining the mechanical properties of steel. Recently, more interest in the kinetics of austenite formation has resulted from the discovery by Grange1 that rapid heating techniques strengthen steel by refining the austenite grain size. Although the strengthening effect is not large, it is accompanied by no loss in ductility. In addition, interest continues in rapid heat treatment of low-carbon steel sheet for tin plate applications.2,3 Among the few systematic studies of austenite formation are the early work of Roberts and Mehl4 on formation of austenite from pearlite and recent work of Molinder5 and of Judd and paxton6 on formation of austenite from spheroidite. Also, Boedtker and Duwez7 and Haworth and paar8 have recently studied the formation of austenite from ferrite in relatively pure iron, Kidin et al.9,10 have studied the formation of austenite in 8 pct Cr steels, and Paxton has recently discussed various aspects of austenite formation in steels." The present work was undertaken to determine the kinetics of austenite formation for a variety of starting structures including ferrite, ferrite plus metastable carbide, ferrite plus spheroidal cementite, and ferrite plus pearlitic cementite. Emphasis was placed on determining the active sites for austenite nucleation, determining the temperature and time range of austenite formation, and in the case of pearlite a careful study of the growth rate of austenite was made in the absence and presence of impurities. By using a variety of heating techniques including laser-pulse heating, it has been possible to study austenite formation in an isothermal fashion over a wide range of temperatures. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys studied in the present work are a zone-refined iron with 4 pprn C, an Fe-C alloy with 130 pprn C, 2 Fe-C alloys with 0.77 and 0.96 wt pct C, and a plain carbon steel with 0.96 wt pct C. The zone-refined iron and Fe-C alloys contained 60 pprn and 200 pprn total substitutional impurities, respectively. The plain carbon steel contained 2400 pprn Si, 2000 pprn Mn, and 900 pprn Cr. Various heat treatments were given to these alloys to produce different starting structures of equiaxed ferrite, ferrite plus metastable carbide, fine pearlite, and spheroidite. These heat treatments are given in Table I. A wide range of heating rates were employed in this work because many of the reactions occur so quickly at temperatures in the austenite range that they are completed during the initial heating cycle unless very fast heating rates are used. Essentially the same heating techniques employed by Speich et a1.12 and Speich and Fisher13 were used in this work. For time intervals of 2 sec to 20 hr, simple hand immersion of 0.010-in. thick specimens in a Pb-Bi bath was employed. These specimens were quenched in a 10 pct NaC1, 2 pct NaOH aqueous bath. For time intervals of 100 m-sec to 2 sec, an automatic dunking and quenching device was employed with 0.002-in. thick specimens. Again, liquid Pb-Bi baths were used for a heating medium but now helium gas quenching was employed. For time intervals of 2 to 100 m-sec a laser heating device was employed with 0.002-in. thick specimens; a helium plus fine water-droplet spray was now used for quenching. Additional information on heating times shorter than 2 m-sec was obtained by study of the zones around the centrally heated laser spot. Here diffusion of heat from the centrally heated zone raises the temperature of the specimen locally to all temperatures between ambient and the peak temperature, but for times of the order of microseconds. To obtain the dry tons on units No. 1 to 9 the No. 10 figure was deducted from the month's dry tons milled figure, which, in turn, was taken from the crusher weightometer tons corrected for weightometer error and moisture. All tons reported in this test are short tons of 2000 lb. Ball Mill Hours: This was taken daily from the Shift Boss reports giving actual running hours for each unit. Screen Analyses: Coarse Heads (Ball Mill Feed): The monthly composite coarse heads screen analysis, done by the Mill Sampling Department, was used for the minus 200 mesh in the feed to the mills. F. X. Classifier Overflow: The ball mill operators took an hourly 24 hr sample of the overflows of units No. 1 to 9. This was a hand sample, but cut with a special cutter, and is believed to be very reliable. On No. 10 unit, an hourly 24 hr sample, and an hourly shift sample were cut in the same way. These five samples were split, filtered, and dried by the Research Department and were then wet screened on a 200 mesh screen. The average of the three shifts samples on No. 10 unit had to check the 24 hr sample within 1.5 pct to be acceptable. A weighted composite was cut each day from both 24 hr samples, and at the end of each month it was screened as follows: Wet screened through 325 mesh, the plus 325 then screened on a rotap for 15 min through 65, 100, 150, 200, and 325. The geological and economic conditions peculiar to the Greater Oficina area are presented to demonstrate the necessity of a low-cost, well-site method of distinguishing gas-bearing formations. The method of gas detection with the neutron log is briefly discussed and its limitations are explained. A new method is described which consists in running a second neutron log with a larger source-to-detector spacing. Field data indicate that under favorable conditions the larger spacing response is proportionately more influenced by the virgin gas zone than is the shorter spacing response. One important condition is that the gas sands be invaded, with a diameter of invasion equal to about two to three times the hole diameter. The calibration of the longer spacing log is made so that the two logs read the same deflection in shale and in a known water or oil sand. Under such conditions, gas is indicated by a positive separation, i.e., the curve for the longer device is displaced to the right of the curve for the shorter device. Because of the non-linearity of the long spacing response, low porosity formations also show positive separations. In sands with large porosity variations, the gas sands can no longer he located visually. They can be detected on a plot of shorter spacing vs longer spac-ing deflections. INTRODUCTION In the Greater Oficina area of Eastern Venezuela, the rapid and accurate detection of gas from well logs is of primary importance because of a combination of economic, geologic, and operational conditions. Briefly, these conditions are: economic—there is no market for gas at the present time; geologic—a single well may contain as many as 30 or more oil or gas sands for which intervals -to be tested must be selected; opera-tional—first, once opened to the casing through perforations, gas sands are extremely difficult and expensive to squeeze off, and second, gas detection must be rapid because the geologist must decide immediately, at the well, which sand to perforate. During the early period of exploitation in Greater Ofi-cina, when clay base muds were used, sidewall samples, together with electric logs, gave fairly good distinction between oil and gas sands. When exploitation became concentrated on deep fields of poorer sidewall sample recovery, and after the advent of oil emulsion muds, now the standard drilling fluid in Greater Oficina, the regular neutron log became the most reliable indicator of gas. In 1953, R. Norelius devised the dual-spacing neutron technique for gas detection. The dual-spacing neutron log has proved to be highly successful in detecting gas and has been adopted as a regular survey by all of the oil companies of the area. Several hundred dual-spacing neutron logs have been run in Eastern Venezuela and several tests per well are available for positive evaluation of the logs. The findings outlined below are based upon this extensive field experience. GEOLOGICAL CONDITIONS OF THE GREATER OFICINA AREA The Greater Oficina area lies on the south flank of the Eastern Venezuela Basin (Fig. 1). Nearly all accumulations of oil and gas in the area are trapped, in whole or in part, against normal faults. All known oil and gas reservoirs in Greater Oficina occur in the Ofi-cina formation (Miocene-Oligocene) or in the "U" sands. The U sands are the lithologic equivalent of the Merecure group (Otigocene-Eocene), which contains oil in many fields north of Greater Oficina. Most of the petroleum produced in Eastern Venezuela is from the Oficina formation.

The area discussed herein, commonly known as the North Texas district, embraces the following 10 counties: Archer, Baylor, Clay, Cooke, Foard, Hardeman, Knox, Montague, Wichita and Wilbarger. It is underlain by two major structural features. The northernmost portion of the district, including Cooke, Montague, northern Clay, Wichita, Wilbarger, Foard and Hardeman counties, is underlain by the system of buried mountains known as the Red River uplift, which is parallel to and closely related to the Wichita-Amarillo uplift of Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle. While the presence of a great majority of the numerous oil fields of the area is traceable to this feature, the production in Archer, southwestern Clay and southeastern Baylor counties is due to the influence of what is known as the Cisco Arch (so called because of its influence on Cisco deposition), the axis of which extends in a northwest-southeast direction across Archer County. It has been impossible for the authors to isolate the statistics for production for each of the many small pools of this district, as such statistics are not kept by the operators except for the district as a whole, therefore Tables 1 and 2 are comparatively short. § 24. Introduction.—This paper discusses the chief existing data as to the temperature, in iron-carbon alloys, of Ae3, the upper limit of the transformation range when in equilibrium, as distinguished from Ac3, the temperature at which the end of the transformation is noted in heating up, and from Ar3, that at which its beginning is noted in cooling down. The former is in fact carried above Ae3 and the latter below Ae3 by lag. I touch incidentally on the influence of manganese on Ae3 (§ 29, p. 614). The sections, tables, and illustrations are numbered consecutively with those in the accompanying papers by Howe and Levy on Determination of the Position of Ae3 in Carbon-Iron Alloys, and by Burgess, Crowe, and Rawdon on Thermal and Microscopical Examination of Professor Howe's Standard Commercial Steels, to which the present paper forms a sequel. § 25. The contradictoriness of our present evidence is shown by grouping it together in Fig. 14. For instance, both Goerens and Meyer (Series 2) and Meuthen (Series 12) used practically stationary temperature, and thus reduced the influence of lag very greatly; yet Ae3 for 0.32 carbon steel according to the former investigators is 894", but according to Meuthen it is at or below 770°, a discrepancy of 124" or more. In view of our ability to measure these high temperatures within a few degrees, the existence of such a discrepancy is as unwelcome as it seems needless. I attack the thankless task of bringing some order out of this chaos. In Part 11. (§§ 29 to 39) I consider the chief causes of error. In Part III.
