As pointed out in previous studies, estimates of petroleum reserves if they are to be of value must not only presuppose a clear understanding of what is actually meant by reserves but must be subject to constant revision to conform with changes in their component factors. When such estimates are analyzed it must be clear that it is virtually impossible to obtain comparable figures reflecting the same degree of accuracy, to represent the reserves not only in various countries, but at times even of different fields in the same country. Estimates of reserves in the United States, subject to frequent independent checks, are obviously more reliable than those furnished, for instance, by the Soviet Government, as the latter must be accepted at their face value and are open to the suspicion of being made to conform with predetermined programs of propaganda. Any tabulation of the reserves of all producing countries, therefore, gives a total that is misleading, as the component items arc not arrived at on the same basis and therefore are not homogeneous in a true sense. Only a fraction of the petroleum stored underground, usually associated with natural gas, is or can be brought to the surface, and although practically all the natural gas underground can be rccovered, in actual practice in some fields a large part of the gas that reaches the mouth of the well is wasted. It is thus estimated that in the United States only some 25 to 35 per cent of the petroleum underground in proven fields is actually economically recovered. Estimates of reserves, therefore, should make clear the distinction between the known amount of oil underground in producing fields and the portion that actually can be brought to the surface. It cannot be overemphasized that as a result of the operation of the "Law of Capture," which controls subsoil ownership in the United States on comparatively small landholdings that seldom if ever cover the entire producing area, the oil fields are not as economically exploited as some forrign fields, and that as a result (were it not for the easy accessibility of the domestic market, the largest in the world) some American production would now be unprofitable in open competition with foreign oils.

Introduction A successful step towards mechanisation of the collier's work was taken in 1954 when the first Anderton shearer loader was commissioned in Lancashire, and progress was reinforced in 1956 when the first powered supports were installed in Nottinghamshire. By 1970, virtually 100% of the coalfaces in the United Kingdom were mechanised and the industry's productivity had doubled. In 1961 the National Coal Board recognised that the next move towards greater productivity and improved safety would be to automate the longwall system. What was not well enough understood, however, was that the basic prerequisites of automation - reliability and measurement - had not yet been achieved. Consequently, the schemes for automatic longwall faces and for an entirely automated colliery were abandoned at the close of the decade. A review of mining research and development policy, commissioned by the Board in 1974, confirmed that the system of longwall mining had great potential for investment and that the short-term policy of automation must once again be pursued. Since then, aided by advances in computer technology, systems for automating the transport of coal from the face to the coal preparation plant have been successfully instituted. Applications of sub-systems dealing with the conveyor, coal preparation plant, and various items of fixed plant are now at the exploitation stage. In the medium term, a number of key problems have been identified, which will arise once the productivity from the coalfaces has doubled, as it is now expected to do in the next five years. One of the most important of these problems is machine guidance, and considerable research and development work is now being carried out in this area. This paper reviews the work on machine guidance prior to 1974 and explains the programme on which the National Coal Board's Mining Research and Development Establishment is currently working.

AMONG the many causes of that perplexing feature of mine-exploitation, the unequal distribution of the ore, the influence of the country-rock upon the vein-contents has long been accepted as an important factor in certain districts, but the general application of the theory has not been proved. It is now possible to obtain trustworthy data with which to test the theory, and either to confirm or to overthrow this time-honored tradition. By the searching methods of modern petrography and chemistry, rock-determinations are now scientifically made, while the examination of thin sections of ores supplements field- and laboratory-study, and affords conclusive evidence of the paragenesis of the ore-minerals. In the great mass of data regarding mineral deposits accumulated during the past century, there are some facts which stand the test as to reliability; but the greater part are not available for use in this discussion. Within the last 20 years, however, many able workers have contributed careful and accurate accounts of various ore-deposits; and it is by the facts given in such papers, and by personal experience, that. I have become convinced that there is in some districts a true relation between the country-rock and the mineral contents of the veins. My own interest in the subject arose from the observation of a number of striking instances of the variation of vein-contents with the nature of the inclosing rock. Having already recorded certain observations of this kind, I venture to present in this paper further notes, together with a few facts from the literature of the subject, which seem to prove the correctness of my view. The Atlanta mine is located in east-central Nevada, approximately 360 km (225 miles) from Las Vegas. It lies in Lincoln County, 116 km (72 miles) south of Ely and 80 km (50 miles) northeast of Pioche. The property is currently operated by the Standard Slag Co. under a joint venture agreement with Bobcat Properties Inc, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Operations began in May 1975, and the mill is currently processing 109 000 to 122 500 t/y (120,000 to 135,000 stpy) of gold- and silver-bearing ore. Open-pit mining takes place in a breccia zone that occurs between Ordovician limestones and dolomites on the footwall and Tertiary rhyolites on the hanging wall. The quartz breccia ore is among the most abrasive in the world-shovel teeth must be replaced every week, 19-mm-thick (3/4-in.) steel chutes last about a month.

Changes in coke hardness affect the working of the blast furnace, for soft coke is an obstacle to proper furnace operation. Soft coke is due to a low hydrogen-oxygen ratio in the coal charged; increasing this ratio increases the hardness of the coke. The best means of determining the hardness of coke is the combined tumbler and ball-mill. What is Good Coke? It is not always appreciated that the correct answer may be such a reliable forecast to the physical condition of the blast furnace, and incidentally its entire operation, that among the ordinary variations in other raw materials and also in operating conditions, it assumes a position of primary significance. Inasmuch as coke forms two-thirds of the total bulk of material charged, this assertion will not seem exaggerated, and in the subsequent discussion its applicability will be presented. Coke is the ideal blast-furnace fuel because it is strong and hard enough to resist the crushing and grinding effects of the furnace burden, and its porosity allows the ready passage of gas upward through the charge, and rapid combustion before the tuyeres. Coke deprived of its strength and with a cell structure physically frail and chemically susceptible to solution by carbon dioxide has its chief asset eliminated. When the melting zones are approached the fluid cinder trickling toward the hearth will envelope the small pieces of coke and form a sticky mass that will retard the free passage of gas. Blast pressure will then rise, driving will slow up and fragments of coke will lie inert before the tuyeres, rendered practically incombustible by their slaggy envelop. It is believed also that coke messes at cast are attributable to quantities of such coke floating unburned in the hearth. Recently the producing branch of the petroleum industry has shown a considerable and growing interest in the quantitative determination of the water, oil, and gas content of cores as it relates to estimation of reserves, to providing a basis for judging as to the feasibility of applying various secondary-recovery and pressure-maintenance processes, and in general to the operation of producing properties. For years it has been known that oil, gas and water coexisted in the pores of many semidepleted oil measures. It is now generally believed that oil-bearing beds contain connate water in amounts varying up to 50 per cent of the pore space. However, only lately has reliable direct evidence of the extensive occurrence of connate water in oil sands been published. Very little work has been done to ascertain the effect of this water on the productivity and ultimate recovery of oil from wells. It was the intent of this research to study the influence of interstitial water on the flow of oil through unconsolidated sands, with the hope that the results could be applied qualitatively to the flow of oil in underground reservoirs partly saturated with water. Obviously, ultimate recovery estimates based on the void volume of the reservoir will be in error unless a correction is made for the volume of water that occupies a portion of the effective pore volume of the reservoir. Evaluation engineers in the past have applied arbitrary saturation and recovery factors that may inadverently have compensated for the failure to consider specifically the water content. Nevertheless, the evidence available indicates that these factors need revising if each is to be independently correct and truly representative. Although the fact that the connate water renders part of the pore volume of the reservoir incapable of containing oil is of primary importance to the operator, it is also to his interest to know to what extent the presence of varying amounts of interstitial water influences the permeability of the sand to oil.

12.2-1. Introduction. Successful management constantly strives to improve its methods and equipment in order to produce a better product at reduced cost. It is not enough that managers be cost conscious and industrious in these days of rapid, dramatic technological development. They must keep abreast of these developments-new or improved methods, machines, and equipment. Most of the machines and equipment have been carefully designed and perfected by reliable companies. However, improvements and progress often evolve from a definite need and are most successful in a particular operation. What may be the "answer" to the requirements of one company may be totally useless or inefficient to those of another. The manager of today must continuously evaluate the myriad proposals for change that result from modern technology-in terms of the particular needs and objectives of his company-to determine correctly which will best satisfy those needs and reach those objectives. Each new method or piece of equipment must receive careful study to make certain it is compatible with the entire operation. It may solve a problem in one department only to create a new problem in another. There are many pitfalls to be avoided in obtaining the necessary facts, and often these problems are unrelated to the actual use of the equipment or method being studied. All facets of the operation being considered must be thoroughly studied to determine if the method is compatible to the entire operation. For example, in considering a possible recommendation that a certain method and type of equipment be used to transport ore, some of the factors that should receive close scrutiny are: blasting procedure, maintenance, turning radius, percent grades, weather extremes, dumping problems, tire problems, length of haul, operator acceptance, or mismatched equipment. Failure to consider every factor-large and small, present and future-in evaluating a proposed change can mean a large investment in a new method or machine that will have to be continued for years at higher-than-antici-

The testing of flotation oils has occupied a large part of the time of the testing departments of various companies using the flotation process in the beneficiation of their ores. The great differences in ores and in oils has made such work necessary, as it has not been possible to select the oil best suited for the purpose without trial of many kinds. In fact, individual shipments of flotation oils from the same manufacturer will often differ so radically that the mill men have been forced to test every lot of flotation oil before its use in the mills. Further, although almost every imaginable product of the distillation of wood, from alcohol to pitch, has been tested in a more or less perfunctory manner by various people, few companies have allowed the results of their tests to be made public. This work was undertaken for the purpose of obtaining reliable data regarding the value as flotation agents of a number of products that are obtained from the distillation of wood by different methods, and incidentally to determine whether some of the products not used at present could be used. Large quantities of such materials are being masted or burned in the wood-distillation plants of the United States, and if some use other than fuel could be found for these materials, such a use would represent a distinct saving to the country as a whole, would increase the profit of wood-distilling plants now operating and perhaps make it possible for others to operate which at present cannot do so except at a loss. At the same time it was thought that if such products can be used as flotation agents, then their use would serve to increase the number of oils and other products available for flotation purposes. In discussing the waste upon which hinges, or is supposed to hinge, so largely the preservation of our national resources, the conclusions reached would be more reliable if actual experience were consulted, and fewer deductions were drawn from general statements, which are often the product of the imagination. It cannot be questioned that the value of by-products has .not been sufficiently appreciated by us, and that our tardiness in recovering the useful ingredients of the escaping gas of our coke-ovens is one of the most glaring instances of shortcoming in that direction. And yet even for that sin there is some palliation in the immature condition of affiliated industries. I presume that it is admitted, without argument, that, except under very exceptional conditions, all the elements cannot be recovered from most of the ores or natural products which we treat. While it is a shame that the by-products from our coke-ovens should be dissipated, Edward W. Parker's report to the U. S. Geological Survey for 19061 supplies a fairly good excuse in justification of this appalling waste. He says (pp. 773 to 774.): " What has been already commented on in previous reports about the slowness of manufacturers to change from the better known but wasteful beehive practice to the by-product recovery method of coke manufacture is particularly emphasized in the statistics presented in this chapter. For it would appear from the table following that the construction of by-product ovens had about come to a standstill, especially when the records for the preceding five years are taken into consideration. At the close of 1901, when there were only 1,165 by-product ovens completed in the United States, there were 1,533 in course of construction, 498 of which were completed during the following year. At the close of 1902, 1,346 retort ovens were building, 293 of which were added to the completed plants in 1903. At the close of 1903, 1,335 new ovens were building and 954 of these

INTRODUCTION The purpose of this section is to introduce the reader to the concepts of computer control of grinding circuits, and to flag some of the opportunities to be encountered, but without becoming overly involved in details of process, equipment or software. It is assumed that the reader has some familiarity with computer hardware and software, and in particular with the grinding process. The paper is organized into four parts: a general commentary of the need for computer control of grinding, a discussion of the process considerations involved, a more detailed elaboration on the current state of applicable computer technology, and a case study indicating one approach towards such a project. A brief installation survey and references for further reading are also given. This section will primarily deal with supervisory computer applications. Direct Digital Control and microprocessor systems are generally used as replacements for analog controls and thus are not considered in depth. Many configurations of grinding circuits exist, necessitating certain assumptions. Since many new concentrators use an open circuited SAG mill feeding a closed circuit ball mill, this configuration is used as a model although the principles stated can be extrapolated to any circuit. Motivation The use of computers for industrial control has been one of the dreams of control engineers and operators alike for many years. The concept of a plant running at optimal conditions with minimal operator involvement is very attractive from economic and technical standpoints. Accomplishment of this goal has been a long struggle, but today likelihood of success of such a project is very high, considering the reliability of modern hardware and the sophistication of available software. The primary motivation of any control system must be economic, i.e. it must pay for itself and make money for the owner, directly or indirectly. In grinding control the benefits which can be expected include: a) Higher through-put b) More uniform product in particle size, density and volumetric flog: c) Reduced operating costs including media consumption, power consumption and liner wear

THE following paragraphs comprise such information as the Secretary has been able to obtain concerning the members and associates whose deaths have been reported. Further particulars or corrections of errors, and biographical data concerning deceased members or associates not already noticed in this way, are solicited. Pat Doyle was born in 1849. At the age of fifteen he entered the Civil Engineering College of Madras, India, and left it at seventeen, having achieved special distinction in mathematics, chemistry,. and geology. Before be was eighteen years old he was in charge of two of the most important Sub-Divisions in the Madras Presidency, where he had ample opportunities for acquiring a preliminary knowledge of his profession, which was his chief object in joining the Public Works Department. In 1867, his energetic measures saved the island of Seringham from disastrous inundation. At this period he began contributing to the press ; and after a varied practical experience he came into public notice again in 1876, with an article in the Colliery Guardian on Indian Mines and Mining. In 1877 he became a Fellow of the Statistical Society of London. He was a founder of the Straits Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society and a life member of the parent Society of Great- Britain and- Ireland, as well as a member of the Independent Asiatic Society of Bengal. In 1878-9 he was Chief Superintendent of the Public Works of Perak; was active in having the Associate Member Class added to the Institution of Civil Engineers; and became a member of the Society of Engineers of London and of the North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers. In 1880 he went to the Southern Colonies and held several appointments in Australia, where he became a member of the Johnsonian Club, Brisbane, and the Queensland Philo-

During the course of some magnetic investigations which the authors have under way, six bars of 0.43-carbon steel were tested, a permeameter designed after the Hopkinson yoke type being used. The results obtained were of some interest and although far from complete serve at least to show the necessity for a careful investigation of the previous history of the samples under study as well as the chemical composition. A steel of given chemical composition may assume a great variety of structures, depending on its treatment. Professor Sauveur has devised a very clear and effective means of illustrating this point. The accompanying microphotographs show some of the possible structures assumed by a 0.30 carbon steel (Fig. 1). It is now a well-established fact that a structural change is accompanied by changes in the tensile strength, elastic limit, hardness, etc., and it seems reasonable to assume also, a change in the magnetic properties. Six bars of a 0.43-carbon steel were used, all the bars being taken from the same rod and treated as follows: Bar 1. Heated to 1,100° and cooled in the furnace. Bar 2. Heated to 1,000° and cooled in the furnace. Bar 3. Heated to 900° and cooled in the furnace. Bar 4. Heated to 1,000° and cooled in air. Bar 5. Heated to 900° and cooled in air. Bar 6. Untreated. The bars were then turned to 13 mm. diameter and tested by the Hopkinson yoke method. After testing, three specimens were taken from each bar, one from each end and one from the middle. The homogeneity of the bars was tested in this manner and in no instance could any difference in structure in the three specimens1 be detected. Bars 1 to 3 inclusive are pearlitic in structure. The main value of earth magnetic measurements, outside of certain mining problems, resides in the study of deeply buried tectonic phenomena related to regional and local geology. Magnetic surveys are a necessary complement of gravimetric measurements, especially of pendulum surveys. To date, magnetometer prospecting has been used chiefly in the study of sedimentary basins where petroleum structures are associated with the uplifted basement rocks. There are, in the literature, innumerable articles dealing with such surveys as applied to oil geology but few treat of broad geological features related to regional magnetic disturbances of the earth field. An important piece of coordination work has been made by Jean Jungl for the magnetic and gravimetric measurements made in France and their geologic significance. A similar attempt at correlation of the known geology with the anomalies of the vertical component of the earth magnetic field has been made for the United States by George B. Somers2. Taking the magnetic vector as a whole, W. P. Jenny3 made a coordination of magnetism and geology for the main producing oil states of the United States. A more detailed study along the same lines is published by A. Van Weelden4 for southern Oklahoma and northern Texas; in this work magnetic and gravimetric measurements taken at stations as close as one mile apart are compiled and compared to the regional geology of the Ouachita-Amarillo uplifted area. From the literature mentioned, it is evident that reliable interpretation of magnetic' anomalies can be arrived at only when the magnetic stations are numerous and cover the area in a close net of measurements, therefore the works of Somers and Jenny, based on sparsely distributed Government measurements, can be regarded only as preliminary programs indicating lines along which further work should be done, whereas the coordination made by Van Weelden is an example of the contribution to the knowledge of regional geology that can be arrived at by the use of applied geophysics. Although chronologically the Sb-Bi system was the first one studied by the writer, the theoretical basis of the equations used in this paper is fully discussed in the writer's paper on the iron-carbon system,' because he believed that many would be more interested in the iron-carbon alloys. He suggests, therefore, that the reader consult that paper to familiarize himself with the theoretical aspect of the thermodynamic treatment outlined herein. This paper is divided into two parts: Part 'I deals with the Sb-Bi system and Part II deals with the lead-rich side of the Sb-Pb system. Although the former system has not much practical interest now, it has great theoretical interest in that it is the one system that for a long time was thought to have (and under specific conditions still has) an anomalous solidus, which no amount of physical investigation could adequately account for. The latter system, of course, is particularly interesting in the lead-rich end. It will be shown that the thermodynamic method is capable of predicting reliably the equilibrium position of the solidus, and thus acts as a check on the experimentally derived solidus. PART I.—THE ANTIMONY-BISMUTII SYSTEM In connection with his studies in thermoelectric phenomena,-the writer was naturally interested in the system Sb-Bi. In consulting the International Critical Tables2 he found the constitutional diagram shown in Fig. 1 (not including Ôtani's solidus), essentially after Cook,³ who investigated the system carefully by thermal analysis. Note the isothermal crystallization of alloys varying in composition from about 48 per cent, (by weight) to pure Bi. This is anomalous, because, according to the phase rule, in a binary system when only two phases coexist, there is univariant equilibrium; that is, the composition changes with the tempera-

AS a part of the general program on alloys of uranium carried out at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology under contract W-7405-eng-175 for the Manhattan Project during the recent war, it was considered desirable to investigate the boundary binary phase diagrams of the ternary alloy system uranium-tungsten-tantalum. Previous work on these alloys was practically nonexistent. A brief statement to the effect that tantalum and tungsten form a continuous series of solid solutions was found in a general paper on tantalum by W. V. Bolton1 but no information was available on the uranium-tungsten and uranium-tantalum systems. The research to be described in this paper has served to delineate the main features of the uranium-tungsten, uranium-tantalum phase diagrams and to check Bolton's work on the tungsten-tantalum diagram. Experimental Details Metals: The tungsten and tantalum used for preparing the alloys were 99.96 and 99.65 pct pure, respectively. The chief impurities in the metals were about 0.02 pct molybdenum in the tungsten, and 0.2 pct columbium, 0.05 pct tungsten, 0.02 pct barium and 0.01 pct silicon in the tantalum. The uranium used was 99.9 pct pure, with the main contaminants being iron and carbon. (An appreciable amount of magnesium was present in the uranium as received, but this distilled off during melting and so is not reported as an impurity.) The composition of specimens indicated in the subsequent figures and tables of this paper are the results of chemical analyses on the cast alloys except for the tantalum-tungsten alloys. The methods of mining talc are simple, and in western North Carolina are almost entirely by open cut and quarry. The larger part of the talc of this section lies in various-sized "veins''. inclosed in quartzitic walls, the majority of which have by folding been thrown into a perpendicular position, or nearly so, and the exposed edges of which have been covered by debris from erosion of the mountain above. This covering of loose rocks and earth is from 5 to 25 ft. thick, and in most cases has to be removed because it is difficult to support. Sometimes the covering is heavy enough to "catch" and timber successfully, and in this case the talc can be worked out by the usual method of following the "vein," using stulls for holding up the walk until the vein is worked out, and then allowing the cut or drift to fall in. In some cases it proves more convenient to sink shafts and run drifts, following the talc "veins" until exhausted. The talc deposits of this section are badly broken and faulted both laterally and perpendicularly, and in some cases are found many feet below the level of drainage, necessitating pumping at considerable expense. My own experience in mining talc has been that the chief point is to get a reliable "vein," and that then the mining is not as difficult, or any more so at least, than that of any common ore. If the "veins" are pure talc it is simple; if the talc is admixed with foreign matter, such as tre-molite in excess, or stains of iron or manganese, as is often the case, one had better abandon the deposit. Methods of Manufacture Talc, being a soft mineral, is not difficult to reduce to the condition desired by the trade. Powdered talc is admitted under low duty from France, Italy and Austria, and some is being imported from Asiatic points. Talc is usually ground and bolted in any simple reduction mill. That mined in this section is hand-sorted and the quality that will make good powdered talc is ground for use in the manufacture of talcum powder, cosmetics, etc., while all that is hard enough and has sufficient strength is used for crayons and blanks for gas burners and electrical work, being sawed into the shapes desired. In the management of oil properties, it is always desirable to know the future behavior of oil wells and oil reservoirs. Some estimation of the quantity of oil and gas that will be produced must be made as a basis for decisions on possible returns on investments in lifting equipment, drilling of additional wells, and other operating expenditures. In new or wildcat areas, operating expenditures are considered highly speculative, but in the completion of partly drilled and the operation of producing fields it is good business to remove as much speculation as possible. An accurate knowledge of oil and gas reserves in such cases would solve many management problems. The term "oil reserves" usually signifies the future ultimate recovery without specifying the method of production. Thus with changing methods and innovations in the production industry, reserves of any definite reservoir may be increased by increasing the portion of oil recovered. The usual reserve estimates are made by comparisons of well and formation characteristics, by using a percentage recovery on the oil content of the formation volume using porosity data, by extending production curves on non-prorated wells, or by extending bottom-hole pressure-production curves. The most reliable method would appear to be one that would estimate the initial quantity of oil and gas present and then obtain percentage recovery values for various productive methods and formations from experience. It is the purpose of this paper to describe a method of estimating the initial quantity of oil and gas present in a reservoir. The method is based on field operating data and the properties of crude oil-gas mixtures. The principles involved, the data required, the assumptions necessary, and an example of the method will be given. The method is entirely independent of sand volumes and formation porosities.
