Curtailment of production of crude oil, to the extent of effecting an approximate balance in supply and demand, was a problem confronting the oil industry in California throughout the year 1930. At the beginning of the year, with drilling operations only slightly checked, the California industry faced a steadily increasing potential production, an actual production in excess of market requirements and stocks of crude oil and refined products which had reached staggering proportions. During the year, the intensive development of the Playa Del Rey field and extensions to several oil fields, together with flush production from numerous large wells from both new and old fields, caused a steady increase in the state's potential production to a record peak in November of 1,186,000 bbl. daily. Despite the burden of this steady stream of flush production and the handicap of incomplete cooperation in several fields, curtailment successfully lowered the trend of crude oil production in California, except for the period of an open-flow test to determine actual potential production in several important fields in February. Under the curtailment programs in effect, the state's production of crude oil for the year was reduced 22 per cent. under the production of 1929 and even slightly under the production for the years 1927 and 1928. The total stocks of crude oil and refined products were reduced 2.7 per cent. during 1930, as compared to an increase of 30 per cent. in total stocks of all products during 1929. Drilling operations were reduced 28 per cent. as compared to drilling activities during 1929. Voluntary curtailment of drilling programs by many operators, particularly the major companies, accounts for the greatest portion of the reduction in drilling activity. The decline in drilling activity at Santa Fe Springs and in the east-side fields of the San Joaquin Valley was more than offset by development in new fields and extensions to deeper zones of old fields. There were 755 new wells completed during 1930, as compared to 910 completions in 1929. At the close of the year, 220 wells were drilling in the oil fields of California, 9 of which were being drilled in search of deeper producing horizons.

The atmosphere, which plays such an important part in the manufacture of iron and steel, is the most variable element involved in its several processes; and particularly is this true of the blast-furnace process, which consumes air in large quantitiee. At no time since the blast-furnace became an important and widely used apparatus—even when it was operated in the most crude manner—have the variations in composition of the raw materials used been as frequent and as great as the variations in humidity of the atmosphere. Important improvements have been made in the blast-furnace and its accessories, such as the hot-blast stoves, the increase in size and change in the shape of the furnace, more efficient blowing-engines, the increased protection given to the bosh-walls, and the careful preparation of the raw material, all of which have exerted a pronounced influence on the furnace-operations from a metallurgical standpoint. But during the past eight years little advance has been made in this direction; the fuel-consumption has not diminished, nor has there been any material increase in production. Within that period, however, there has been witnessed the greatest development in appliances for the economical handling of material. So complete has been the work in this direction, that, except in isolated cases, in this country at least, a further extension does not hold out much promise of a satisfactory return on the investment required. It seemed that, with the exception of the gas-engine, we had about reached the limit, for like a strong wall, the atmosphere, with its humidity as variable to-day as when first blown into a primitive blast-furnace, appeared to stand as a barrier to

COMMENTING on the report of the latest Royal Commission for India, the September, 1926, issue of the National City Bank's monthly letter states, among other things, that "The decision of the Royal Commission is against the proposal for a gold coinage, but in favor of placing the silver coins and paper currency now redeemable in silver on a gold basis." Also, it quotes the following from the Royal Commission's report: The essence of the proposal * * * * * is that the ordinary medium of circulation in India should remain as at present the currency note and the silver rupee, and that the stability of the currency in terms of gold should be secured by making the currency directly convertible into gold for all purposes, but the gold should not circulate as money. It must not circulate at first, and it need not circulate ever. In this connection it may be stated that during the last one hundred and fifty years or so unsuccessful attempts have been made by the governments of different nations of the world to devise a plan or plans by which gold and silver could be used concurrently for money purposes and, particularly, as standard money; such, for example, as bimetallism, which, of course, is impracticable. But, since none of such plans has been adopted generally it is logical to conclude that their proponents did not shape them so as to conform to the basic principle of standard money, or else political issues were deemed to be dominant, or, perhaps, it was partly due to each.

The three gas-producing "pools" discussed in this paper are in Sweet-water County, southwest Wyoming, and Moffat, County, northwest Colorado. Hiawatha, North Baxter Basin and South Baxter Basin gas fields became economically important in 1929 when a 330-mile gas line connected them with Salt Lake City, Ogden and towns en route. An intensified search for gas, because of the shortage in the area, led to the completion of 482 wells in southwestern Pennsylvania during 1944. This number was 27 more than the number in 1943, but 118 of the wells were nonproductive. Shallow Development Oil The initial production of the 25 producers completed was slightly less than was obtained from four wells above last yearJs total. The largest well, 20 bbl., was found in the Big Injun (Miss.) sand in Morris township, Washington County, at a depth of 2085 ft. It is currently producing about 3 bbl. per day. Outside the main producing area, a well drilled in Nicholson township, Fayette County, obtained 15 bbl. per day from 1864 to 1866 ft. in the Gantz (U. Dev.) sand. The Federal subsidy of 75¢ per barrel, effective , 1, 1944, which increased to $3.40 the current pipe-line price in this area, seems to have been insufficient stimulus to materially increase drilling for oil, although more repressuring operations are contemplated. Gas The volume of initial open flow of gas developed is off slightly over 10 million cu. ft. from 36 more wells than were completed a year ago, and the average rock pressure of this new gas is more than 100 lb. less than that obtained a year ago. Apparently the best find of this year was reported in Patton township, Allegheny County, where an initial volume of over 4 million cu. ft, was encountered in the Speechley (U. Dev.) sand at a depth of from 3293 to 3303 ft. The rock pressure there, 1190 lb. per sq. in., is nearly virgin. However, this area is fairly well delimited by dry holes and docs not seem nearly so promising from the standpoint of reserves as the Armbrust area, which was discovered several Years ago. In the patton township locality another fair well with 1303 M cu. ft. open flow and 400 lb. Per 59. in. rock pressure completed in the Hundred-Foot (U. Dev.) sand at a a depth of 2125 feet. Armstrong County, as usual, leads in number of producing wells completed with lowest percentage of failures but ranks only fou th in volume of production developed. Only two wells here had more than one million cubic feet capacity, but the rock pessure was under 200 Ib. Per sq. inch. In Fayette County, where the largest portion of new gas was found, activity appears to be shifting eastward. In Luzerne township, four producers having a total combined initial open flow in excess of 10 million cu, ft, were found in the Big Injun (Miss.) sand. The best well was found also in the same area in the Speechley sand (U. Dev.) at a depth of 3460 ft. This was a 2500-M CU. ft. well in Georges township. Several wells of more than a million cubic feet capacity were found in Jackson, Washington, Wayne and Whitley townships, Greene County. None of these, however, was in a new pool.

METALLURGICAL coke and the by-products of the carbonization of coal continue in strong demand. Nearly 500 new by-product ovens were constructed in 1943. Output of by-product coke in the first ten months of the year was about 2 1/2 percent higher than in the corresponding period of 1942, but beehive production remained on approximately the same level as last year and constituted about 11 per cent of the total coke output.

The diffision coefficient for self-diffision of plutonium in the temperature range 350" to 440°C has been measured by using puZ3 as the tracer isotope. Autoradiopaphic techniques were used to inzlestigate the possibility of grain boundary diffusion, hut only evidence for volume diffusion was found. The least-squares fit of the data gives the .following equation for the diffision coefficient: The computer least-squares technique for fitting the nonlinear equations is outlined. DETERMINATION of the self-diffusion coefficient of the fcc 6 phase of plutonium is in principle a straightforward experimental task. However, the chemical reactivity, the intense @ activity, and the toxicity of plutonium put limitations on the experimental techniques. The technique selected included roll bonding for preparation of the diffusion couples and pulse-height analysis of the @-particle activity to determine the distribution of the PU tracer in the diffusion couples. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Couple Preparation. Cylinders about 0.5 in. in diam were cast from two special stocks of plutonium, one of which had been enriched in puZ3', as shown in the isotopic analyses listed in Table I. For each roll-bonded composite sheet, a cylinder 0.437 in. in diam and 0.190 in. thick was turned from each kind of plutonium on a lathe in a 98 pct He atmosphere. The two freshly machined cylinders were positioned face to face in a tube of commercially pure aluminum which had been sealed at one end by welding and the assembly was evacuated on a vacuum manifold overnight. The elapsed time between machining the faces of the plutonium cylinders and evacuating the loaded tube was about 15 min. After overnight evacuation of the assembly the indicated vacuum was 1 X 10"5 torr or better. The aluminum tube was then warmed and pinched off with a cold-welding tool. The pinched-off weld was also fusion-welded as an additional precaution against leakage of air into the evacuated assembly. The assembly was immediately heated for 30 min in a 250°C furnace and reduced in thickness by being passed through a rolling mill with rolls heated to 200°C. The rolling schedule (four passes of 100 mils each with a 10-min reheat after two passes) reduced the thickness of the assembly to 100 mils. The rolled assembly was allowed to cool normally in air. The rolled assembly was sheared at the edges and the aluminum peeled from the composite plutonium sheet. The elliptical sheet was about 0.060 in. thick and usually three 0.383-in.-diam disks could be punched from its central portion. The sheet was heated on a hot plate to the ductile low 0 range (140°C as measured by temperature-indicating pellets) before each disk was quickly punched. The quality of the bond in the disks was evaluated by metallographic examination of the scrap sheet adjoining the hole left by the punch. Only well-bonded specimens without oxide in the interface (as indicated by metallography) were considered satisfactory for further use. More than half of the specimens so examined contained sufficient oxide in the interface to be rejected. Diffusion Anneal. Each disk to be diffusion-annealed was wrapped in 1-mil-thick tantalum foil and sealed within a Pyrex capsule evacuated to 1 x 10~5 torr or better. This capsule was then sealed within another Pyrex capsule at a similar pressure. The diffusion anneals were carried out at temperatures between 350" and 440°C in Marshall furnaces adjusted to have a temperature gradient of not more than *1/2"C over a 5-in. length. This gradient was then further smoothed by using a nickel tube as a liner in the furnace. The liner was divided into three longitudinal cavities by a septum of nickel sheet to which two calibrated Chromel-Alumel thermocouples were attached. One thermocouple was used for controlling the furnace temperature by means of a Brown Pyrovane controller equipped with a Capaciline anticipation circuit; the second thermocouple was monitored twice daily with a Leeds and Northrup K-2 precision potentiometer.

The ceramic industry has to do with forming or molding articles of clay, and imparting to them their characteristic properties of permanence, strength and color by subjecting them to heat treatment in kilns. This heat treatment is commonly known as "firing" or "burning." The art of firing clay ware antedates the industrial use of coal; hence wood was the fuel first used, and the earliest kilns were built to burn wood. The majority of the clay ware produced today is fired in periodic kilns that are essentially enlarged structures similar to the earliest enclosed kilns; a kiln consists of a large chamber 16 to 32 ft. dia. (or rectangular) in which the ware is charged and fired either in direct contact with flame or hot gases from the fuel, or in saggers which shield the ware from direct contact with the gases. The fuel is burned in a number of small furnaces built in the thick wall that encloses the chamber; these furnaces are from 16 to 36 in. wide and from 3 to 5 ft. long; some of them have horizontal or sloping grates, but many have no grates; the last are called "dead-bottom" furnaces. The temperature necessary to mature the charge in the kiln varies for different clays; for some it is as low as 1800°, and for others as high as 2700" F. Wood was an ideal fuel for the low temperatures that were used in early kilns; it burns freely and produces a long, clean flame, which promotes uniform distribution of the heat in the kiln; it does not coke and so restrict the passage of air through the fuel bed; the ash does not melt in the fuel bed to form clinker; and the ash that is carried into the chamber and deposited on the charge does not contain iron and sulfur to discolor the clay. The extent of the ceramic industry now precludes the general use of wood in kilns, so that today this industry is one of the large users of bituminous coal, burning more than eight million tons annually in kilns. Manufacturing plants usually are at or near the source of clay, with deposits of coal suitable for kilns occurring near the clay. The cost of coal is the largest single item of expense in the manufacture of clay ware, and, because all coals are not equally suitable for the process, the careful selection of coal is important. Activities of aluminum in solid Ni-A1 alloys have been determined between 20 and 60 at. pet Al and 1200" and 1400°K by an isopiestic method in which nickel specimens, heated in a temperature gradient, are equilibrated with aluminum vabor in a closed all-alumina system. The activity of aluminum shows a strong negative deviation from Raoult's law at low concentrations but increases by three orders of magnitude within the ß(NiAl) phase. The partial molar enthalpy and entropy of mixing are negative. Using Wagner and Schottky's theory of ordered compounds, a degree of disorder of 4 x 10 -4 for NiAl and 1.25 X 10-2 for FeAl has been calculated THE Ni-A1 system has been studied by a great number of investigators, and the results, as far as the phase diagram is concerned, have been compiled by Hansen.1 The phase boundaries from 0 to 50 at. pet Ni are well-established. At higher nickel contents the boundaries are still in dispute and an additional phase, A12Ni3, has been reported.' The phase diagram is dominated by a very stable high-melting compound, NiA1, with a relatively wide range of homogeneity. Heats of formation of solid alloys have been determined calorimetrically by Oelsen and Middel3 from 20 to 95 at. pet Ni and by Kubaschewski4 from 25 to 80 at. pet Ni. According to the most recent compilation5 no other thermodynamic investigations have been reported for the Ni-A1 system. Due to the corrosive nature and the low vapor pressure of aluminum, a method has been employed for determining activities of aluminum which was previously developed for the Fe-A1 system.= Nickel specimens, heated in a closed evacuated alumina system in a temperature gradient, were equilibrated with aluminum vapor from a source within the system kept at constant temperature. After complete equilibration the specimens were analyzed and activities calculated from the known vapor pressure of aluminum. APPARATUS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Materials. The nickel specimens were made from wafers of electrolytic nickel (International Nickel Corp.) of 99.99 pet purity which were rolled to a 0.001-in.-thick foil by Driver-Harris Co. and to a 0.005-in.-thick sheet in our laboratory. The aluminum (Aluminum Corp. of America) had a purity of 99.99+ pct. The alumina tubes and crucibles were made of impervious recrystallized alumina with an alumina content of 99.7 pet (Triangle RR, Mor-ganite Inc.). Experimental Procedure. Annular specimens were punched from the sheet, the punching burrs removed, and the specimens degreased in carbon tetrachloride and acetone and weighed on a micro-balance to within an accuracy of ±0.01 mg. The specimens were positioned with alumina spacers along an alumina tube, and the positions measured. Aluminum metal was machined into cylindrical shape, and placed into an alumina crucible. The tube with the specimens was then inserted into a hole drilled into the aluminum metal. An alumina tube with its closed end at the top was slipped over the specimens so that its lower end fitted snugly into the alumina crucible. The assembled reaction tube was inserted into a mullite tube with a water-cooled brass head which had an opening for a quartz thermocouple protection tube and a metal-to-glass connection to a conventional vacuum system. A Pt-Pt 10 pet Rh thermocouple could be raised and lowered in the quartz tube which was placed along the outside of the alumina reaction tube. The mullite tube was heated by two separately controlled resistance-tube furnaces so that in the experimental temperature range an over-all temperature gradient of approximately 150o to 250°C could be imposed on the reaction tube. The position of the mullite tube was adjusted so that the surface of the aluminum metal was always at the temperature minimum. The reaction tube was thoroughly evacuated before and during slowly heating the assembly up to the melting point of aluminum. A pressure of less than 2 µ (Hg) was maintained during an experiment. Once the aluminum had melted, it isolated the contents of the alumina tube from the surroundings. Several times during an experiment the temperature gradient was carefully measured. An experiment lasted from 3 to 6 weeks and it was terminated by air cooling the evacuated mullite tube. C. M. Decroly (University of Brussels, Belgium) — The importance of the fluorides in the process metallurgy of special metals has already been accepted and it will probably increase in the future. Free energy diagrams as such established by Professor Kellogg are therefore very useful. It is interesting to note that the absolute value of the standard free energy of formation of HF increases with temperature, whereas for almost all the other fluorides it decreases; consequently it should be theoretically possible to reduce all the fluorides of the metals which, at low temperature, have a greater affinity for fluorine than hydrogen by this last element, provided a sufficiently high temperature is used in order to have a good efficiency. However, with regard to the reduction of UFe by hydrogen, I doubt that it will be possible to obtain directly the metal at comparatively low temperatures. There are other uranium fluorides which are more stable than UF6 and it is very likely that such fluorides will be obtained first. For example, in considering the reaction: UF6gas + H2gas + UF1so1id + 2 HFgas it is found, using the thermodynamic data of Brewer et al, that ?H298 = —66 kcal and ?G°298, = —65.2 kcal. As a result, the reduction of UF6 to UF4solld should proceed spontaneously even at ordinary temperature. On the other hand, the standard free energy of formation of UF4solid at 298°K is AG°298 = -209 kcal per mol of F2. The reduction of UF4 by hydrogen will be practically difficult and, as it is known, the only practical way of reducing this compound is to use alkaline-earth metals such as calcium or magnesium. I should like to point out, further, that the fluorination of many metal oxides can be carried out very easily by using the ammonium difluoride method of preparation, which renders the use of fluoride gas unnecessary. The first compound formed is generally a double fluoride of the metal and ammonium. This compound can be decomposed by heating either in a vacuum or in an inert atmosphere, ammonium fluoride being volatilized leaving the metal fluoride in a very pure state. H. H. Kellogg (author's reply)—Professor Decroly is quite right in pointing out that the formation of lower halides of uranium may complicate the reduction of UF6 by H2. I was unable to find his reference to the free energy of formation of UF4 in the compilation of Brewer.13 however. The value of AG°298, = —209 kcal for formation of ½ UFa seems rather high, and I hope the source of this value may be made clear.

THE significance of the hcp (E) structure, which appears when Fe-Cr-Ni alloys (stainless steels) are transformed martensitically, has been the subject of considerable study and speculation.'-7 It has been proposed that the hcp structure is an intermediate phase in the transformation: fcc (austenite) — hcp (E) -bcc (0, martensite). However, recent studies by transmission electron microscopy6,7 have indicated that the hcp structure may be a consequence of the large shear strain (10 deg) associated with the fcc to bcc transformation. That is, the transformation to a bcc structure is accompanied by extensive dissociation of dislocations in the parent austenite, which has a low stacking-fault energy.'-'' X-ray diffraction analysis of the transformed alloy reveals a pattern of lines corresponding to an hcp structure, together with the parent austenite and the bcc product. The fact that the hcp structure is observed only in association with the bcc product in these alloys1'4'6'7 lends support to the conclusion that the hcp structure is a secondary product of the transformation. But, the evidence is circumstantial and more definite resolution of the two possibilities mains to be obtained. If the hcp structure is an intermediate product of the transformation, as in 1) above, then two distinct Ms temperatures should be observed, Ms and To evaluate this possibility, three different techniques that are particularly sensitive to the structural changes accompanying such transformations have been used in an attempt to detect two transformation temperatures in an Fe-15.1 Cr-11.7 Ni alloy: 1) high-sensitivity differential thermal analysis, 2) the temperature dependence of resonant frequency (elastic moduli), and 3) internal friction of cylindrical specimens vibrating in either longitudinal or torsional modes. To obtain the necessary sensitivity, a differential thermal analysis technique was developed for the purpose, Fig. 1. The differential temperature between a nickel standard and the specimen was amplified to produce a sensitivity of 0.02OC (0.7 v) in temperature difference. The specimen and the standard were surrounded by a copper block and the entire assembly was immersed in a solution of methyl and ethyl alcohol, freezing point, - 140OC, which provided the necessary thermal stability to reduce temperature fluctuations to negligible proportions. A cooling rate of about 1.5OC per min was obtained by bubbling liquid nitrogen through the liquid bath. In order to calibrate the experiment with respect to the evolution of heat in the transformation from fcc to hcp structures, differential cooling curves were obtained for an Fe-19.8 Mn alloy, which transforms martensitically to E.'"-' a Ms(e) temperature of 145°C was clearly defined by a temperature

The phases in Cr-Fe-Mo alloys have been investigated with homo-genization, aging temperature, composition range, and alloy addition as variables. Metallography, three X-ray methods, and hardness were used as methods of study. The behavior of s, M23,C8, and Z phase are reported for cornpasition range 60 pct Cr-15 to 25 pct Fe-15 to 25 pct Mo-<0.005 to 0.36 pct C with aging at 1400º to 2000°F. With 2 pct Ti, Tic and TiC-TiC are formed; with nitrogen Cr2N. THE recently developed class of chromium-base heat-resistant alloys shows appreciably higher strength than commercially used high temperature alloys. However, further developmental work is required to impart needed shock resistance and some degree of room-temperature ductility to these alloys. Extensive exploratory work on chromium-base alloys was begun in a program initiated by the War Metallurgy Committee of the National Defense Research Council at the Climax Molybdenum Co. in the early part of 1942.&apos; Alloys were sought for gas-turbine blades for use at 1600°F. A minimum of 5 pct elongation in the stress-rupture test was a requirement. From the Climax work, ternary alloys of chromium, iron, and molybdenum appeared to show the greatest promise as materials for gas-turbine blades. The composition line in the ternary diagram joining the 60 pct Cr-15 pct Fe-25 pct Mo and 60 pct Cr-25 pct Fe-15 pct Mo alloys was indicated as representing the most useful combination of strength and ductility.&apos; Strength increased while ductility decreased as molybdenum was raised in this composition range.&apos; The 60 pct Cr-15 pct Fe-25 pct Mo type alloy was thought to have the most suitable properties for gas-turbine blades.&apos; Concurrent with the study reported here, other investigations were being made on Cr-Fe-Mo alloys. The liquidus temperatures on a series of low carbon, ternary alloys were being determined, and isothermal sections drawn at 2370°, 2010°, and 1650°F (1300°, 1100°, and 900°C).2 Also, various methods of preparation and some mechanical and physical properties of chromium-base alloys, particularly the 60 pct Cr-15 pct Fe-25 pct Mo type, were being investigated., At the inception of the present program, only a limited study had been made of etchants for developing the microstructures of chromium-base alloys; X-ray analysis of the microconstituents had not been made. A review of the literature revealed that no phase-diagram work had been reported on the Cr-Fe-Mo system. Scope of Work The work on chromium-base alloys includes the following: 1—The development of etching methods for differentiating between the microconstituents; 2—The identification of microconstituents by X-ray diffraction methods; and 3—A comprehensive metallographic and hardness study after various heat treatments. The phases were studied by three standard X-ray techniques: 1—The block-sample focusing-camera method; 2—The powder-diffraction method on elec-trolytically separated residues; and 3—The powder-diffraction method on cold-worked aggregate samples. The results by the first two methods were correlated with the metallographic data. The third method was used largely to study conditions approaching equilibrium, since cold working prior to heat treating accelerated precipitation. In offering some data relative to this property, and the treatment of its ores, it is proper to say that a purely scientific article has not been attempted. It is hoped, however, that the economic conditions presented may be of interest to the members of the Institute, and that a discussion upon the concentration of the ore may throw some light upon a very unsatisfactory part of the work. The Smuggler-Union mines are located at the head of the San Miguel river, just south of the water-shed between Ouray and Telluride. The latter town, reached by the Denver and Rio Grande railway, is most picturesquely situated, at ail altitude of 8500 feet, in a narrow valley, the lower portion of which exposes only the sedimentary rocks. Along the sides of the valley, large masses of coarse alluvial deposits are left high above the present channel of the stream. Although much placer-work has been done, and some very rich material has been found, the limited extent of the isolated tracts has made placer-mining in this locality generally unprofitable. The valley terminates two miles above Telluride in an amphitheater around which walls rise abruptly several thousand feet. Here the company&apos;s mill is situated, being reached by a Bleichert tramway from the mines and also by a spur of the Rio Grande railway from Telluride. At this point, not only are the reddish sandstone and conglomerate beds exposed, but the contact between the conglomerate and the overlying gray volcanic breccia is plainly in view, even at a distance of many miles. A marked stratification is noticeable, indicating the successive layers of igneous breccia, locally termed trachyte. Throughout the entire region this is the favorite name among the miners for the rocks composing the igneous cap of the San Juan

This story of the salting of a supposed diamond mine is a part of our Western history and deserves to be recorded in this book. It was more than a local affair, because it was concerned with persons in London and New York, as well as San Francisco. Part of the story has been told by Asbury Harpending in a little book published 12 years ago. Harpending (who died at New York in 1923) was in London in March, 1872, when he received a cable dispatch from William C. Ralston, the president of the Bank of California, stating that "a vast diamond field" had been discovered "in a remote section of the United States". Before starting for San Francisco, Harpending had an interview with Baron Rothschild, who showed a lively interest in the story, which was as follows: two weather-beaten prospectors went to the Bank of California and deposited some uncut diamonds and rubies for safe keeping; these precious stones were estimated to be worth $125,000. The men said that they had found the gems in "a desert portion of the West". They departed quietly, but the story was told in business circles; whereupon George D. Roberts, a mining engineer of wide experience and an associate of Ralston, sought an interview with the prospectors. One of them proved to be a man that had been in the employ of Roberts. Both prospectors, named Slack and Arnold, appeared "coy and cautious"; they were "simpleminded fellows", and were "afraid to trust anyone with the momentous secret ". They refused to divulge the place of discovery and declined "to part with their rights", but later "they became more amenable to reason" and expressed willingness to sell a half interest to

PEARL starch, a corn starch prepared with a minimum of alteration, is a good selective depressant for iron oxide minerals.1 From what is known of the complex chemistry of corn starch, there is evidence that it consists of a mixture of saturated giant polymeric molecules, both straight and branch- chained, the constituents consisting of glucose units with hydroxyl radicals as active or polar groups. To add to the existing knowledge of the chemistry of the flotation process, it is desirable to ascertain the effects on the corn starch as an iron oxide depressant when some of the hydroxyl radicals are replaced by other active groups that are common to flotation reagents. The ideal way to carry out this investigation would be to test reagents containing different active groups derived from corn starch. The preparation should be such that the reagents possess the same degree and location of substitution and are ac- companied by little or no degradation of the starch molecules. This, of course, is almost impossible to realize, as it is difficult to control the degree and location of substitution as well as to prevent degradation of the starch molecule during preparation.

This paper presents the study in situ on stress field of rock mass in a large dam site. By means of two different measure instruments and the method of stress relief, a lot of measure in situ has been done, including stress measurement of three dimensions at ten points and two deep-hole stress measurements in the perpendicular boreholes which are 59.4m and 53m deep seperately, and the basic accordant results corresponding two methods have been got. In the process of the deep-borehole stress measurement we got the stress value in critical state in which cylindrical core would become core-disking in the high stress area, which was first got in the world. The maximum principal stress was up to 650 kg/cm2. The stress value obtained by test and the thickness of rock disks all basically accord to the analysis by mechanical mechanism of core-disking The plane linear elastic finite element analysis has been completed. Results of inverse calculation all ac- cord to the measurement results in four different positions. The whole outline of the stress field of dam site was delineated clearly.
