WHEN starting a series of experiments on the use of powdered coal in lead blast furnaces to replace coke, I realized that in copper smelting the problem is simpler because the sulfur recovers the copper in the form of matte. In lead smelting there are greater difficulties because a reducing atmosphere must be maintained in the active, zone corresponding to each tuyere in order to get the best recovery of lead. Therefore, the feed of powdered coal must be quite regular, uniform and under control. The molten products issuing from the taphole are the resultant of the work of all the tuyeres and it can readily be con-ceived that one part of the furnace may be forming slag with a higher lead content than the slag formed in other parts of the furnace. At first, we used only one tuyere situated on the back of the furnace. This was for the purpose of getting all of our regulations under the regular operating conditions. We tried every known system of feed and found they were not dependable and our present system was finally worked out, and so far as we know, is the only working system that will give uniformly good saving in lead blast furnaces. We placed a Bristol self-recording thermometer on the feed floor. This gives a 24-hr. continuous record of the temperature of the gases leaving the furnace. We put a self-recording gage on the "15-lb." air used in the injector. A second recording Bristol gage was put on the low-pressure air (40 oz.). I realized that it was necessary that we should know the exact weight of coal going into each tuyere and that it should 'be under observation at all times. L. W. Kirk was assigned to the problem and developed the open sight feed and the distributor, so that we now have the coal being fed into each tuyere in sight of the men in charge. We have an apothecary's balance beside the furnace, and the operator takes the pan and inserts it under the stream of falling powdered coal for one minute, and places the pan on the scale, the other scale pan having weights indicating the desired amount to be fed to each tuyere per minute.

Laboratory-scale decopperizing experiments with multiple sulfur addifions were conducted at 330°C on ternary Pb-Cu alloys containing, as the third elenlent, Sn, Ag, As, Sb, Bi, Zn, and Au, common impurities in lead blast-furnace bullion. For silver and tin, an increased rate and extent of 'cofifier removal was obsert3ed. The elements As, Sb, Zn, Au, and Bi had no effect or less effect as compared to sulfur additions with no i)npurily additions. THE production of primary lead in the blast furnace yields an impure lead frequently containing such impurities as copper. antimony. arsenic. tin, gold, silver iron, oxygen. and sulfur. By cooling this lead to a temperature near its melting point. most of the iron, sulfur, and oxygen and part of the other impurities are removed in the form of a dross. With incipient solidification of the lead, the copper concentration wil have been reduced to 0.02 to 0.05 pct. depending upon the concentration of the other impurities. according to Davey.' Since copper interferes with the treatment of silver after the desilverizing process, it is desirable to decrease the copper content of the lead still fur-ther before the lead is desilvered. The decopperizing of the lead is accomplished by stirring a small quantity. approximately 0.1 pct. of elemental sulfur into the lead at a temperature near its melting point, 330" to 360°C. The copper is removed as a copper sulfide which constitutes a small fraction of a voluminous dross consisting mostly of lead sulfide and entrained metallic lead. The residual copper concentration following the decopperizing operation is frequently as low as 0.001 to 0.005 pct. Thi fact has aroused considerable interest because the equilibrium copper concentration of lead in contact with solid PbS and solid Cu2S is at least an order of magnitude greater, 0.05 pct Cu at 330C. 1, 2 Most investigators have suggested that various impurities in the lead bullion are responsible for the very low copper concentrations frequently encountered in practice. There is little agreement, however? as to which of the impurities are helpful and which are not.3"11 Also. few investigators have sought to explain the mechanisms responsible for the removal of copper to very low concentrations. Willis and Blanks9 have proposed that a nonstoichiometric copper-deficient cuprous sulfide forms in place of the supposed Cu2S. Being copper-deficient, this sulfide phase would possess a low copper activity, and the diffusion of copper dissolved in the liquid lead into this phase would be greatly facilitated. Pin and wagner2 have investigated the removal of copper from liquid lead by studying the effect of impurity-doped lead sulfide on the decopperizing of pure Pb-Cu alloys. Samples of the doped PbS were held in contact with copper-saturated lead for 1 week at 33'7°C. They reported a beneficial effect on decopperizing with bismuth and antimony and no effect with tin or silver. which is directly opposite to the results observed in practice and those reported by Davey 3 and this studv. The purpose of this paper is to describe the effects of certain additive elements on the extent to which copper can be removed fro111 liquid lead by successive additions of sulfur. The impurity elements were added individually to prepared Pb-Cu alloys. The resulting ternary alloys as well as a binary Pb-Cu alloy were then decopperized with repeated additions of sulfur. EXPERIMENTAL Materials. Granulated test lead with a purity of 99.999 pct and the additive elements Cu. Ag. Sb. Bi. Zn. Sn. and Au with purities of 99.99 pct were American Smelting and Refining Co. research-grade materials. The major impurities in the lead were 1 ppm each of iron and copper. all others being less than 1 ppm. The arsenic used was a technical-grade arsenic of 98+ pct purity. Reagent-grade flowers of sulfur were melted under argon to provide small pieces free of fines. Apparatus. The decopperizing experiments were carried out in a 25-mm-OD by 375-mm-long Pyrex tube sealed at one end. The tube was mounted vertically in a resistance-heated. hinge-type tube furnace controlled to within ±lcC. Temperature measurement was accomplished by means of a standardized chromel-alumel thermocouple sealed into the base of a silica. paddle-type stirring rod. All decopperizing experiments were carried out under an argon atmosphere. Procedure. A Pb-Cu starting alloy containing 0.05 pet Cu was prepared under carbon and poured into cold tap water to produce shot. The ternary alloys were prepared by melting together 100 g of the starting alloy and a sufficient amount of the impurity element to yield the desired concentration. The resulting alloy was then homogenized in a Pyrex tube at 450C with continuous stirring. The furnace temperature was then lowered to the operating temperature of 330°C. When thermal equilibrium had been obtained at the operating temperature, individual additions of 0.2 pct (0.2 g) of solid sulfur were added to the melt and stirred in. Stirring was continued for a period of 3 min. discontinued for 5 min. and resumed for the remaining 2 min of a 10-min cycle. This cycle was repeated for as many sulfur additions as desired. When the decopperizing experiment had been completed the lead bullion was quenched and samples of the bullion and dross phases were taken for analysis. Results. The oxygen activity and concentration were measured in Fe-Cr-0 melts in equilibrium with an oxide phase at 1600°C (2912°F). The activity was determined by ,use of the following solid oxide -electrolyte galvanic cell CY-Cr8,(s) I ZrOz(CaO) I Fe-CY-G(saturated)(l) The oxygen concentration decreases with increasing Cr concentration to about 270 ppm 0 at about 7pct CY and then increases gradually. The activity coefficient of oxygen (fo) decreases with increasing Cr. In melts containing up to about 20 pct Cr, log f is approximately a linear function of wt pct Cr with a slope (e q 2) of —0.037. The activity of chromium was calculated and found to exhibit a small negative deviation from Raoult's law. From the activity and solubility data for low chromium melts, the free energy of formation of chromite, FeCr204, was found to be -79.8kcal per mole where pure liquid chromium and oxygen at I wt pct in Fe are the standard states. ThE effect of chromium on the chemical behavior of dissolved oxygen in liquid iron is of great importance in controlling the deoxidation of steels containing a significant amount of chromium. Chen and chipman' equilibrated Fe-Cr melts in the presence and absence of slag with hydrogen-water vapor mixtures. They concluded that at 1595°C chromite was the oxide phase in equilibrium with Fe-Cr alloys containing less than 5.5 pct Cr while at higher chromium concentration Cr,O, was the stable phase. In the composition range 0 to 10 pct Cr they found that the interaction coefficient, was equal to -0.041. Turk-dogan,' Schenck and Steinmetz,, and pargeter4 measured egr) in a similar manner and found the value to be -0.064,-0.04, and -0.052, respectively. McLean and Be11 evaluated egr) from their data on the equilibrium of Fe-Cr-Al-0 alloys with H2/H20 mixtures and found it to be -0.058. However, McLean and Bell's value should only be considered an estimate because the effect of aluminum on the activity coefficient of oxygen is about a hundred times greater than that of chromium. Consequently, an error in the value of egl) used, which at the present time is not well-known, or an error in aluminum analysis, which is present in very small quantities, will result in a significant error in egr). Fischer et a1.6 determined the interaction coefficient (eEr) in Fe-Cr-0 melts not in equilibrium with an oxide phase and containing less than 18 wt pct Cr at 1600°C electrochemically. They determined a value of -0.031 for egr). Hilty et aL7 measured the oxygen content of Fe-Cr melts in equilibrium with an oxide phase containing up to 50 pct Cr. They found that the solubility of oxygen decreased as the chromium content increased to about 6 pct Cr and then increased gradually. They concluded that the equilibrium oxide phase was chromite below 3 pct Cr, distorted spinel from 3 to 9 pct Cr, and Cr,04 above 9 pct Cr. Adachi and lwamotoa also investigated this system, but did not find Cr30,. They X-rayed the equilibrium oxide phases and did not find the presence of Cr,O,. They also X-rayed the oxide phase extracted from a 65 pct Cr melt which was heat treated and did not find metallic chromium as would be expected if Cr3O4 were the equilibrium oxide phase as indicated by the reaction : 3Cr3O4 — 4Cr2O:, + Cr [lj It was the purpose of the present investigation to determine the effect of chromium on the activity coefficient of oxygen in Fe-Cr melts by measuring the activity and solubility of oxygen equilibrated with an oxide phase in the composition range 0.18 to 50.5 wt pct Cr at 1600°C (2912°F). The activity of oxygen in the melts was determined by use of the following galvanic cell: The relationship between the partial pressure of oxygen in equilibrium with the melt and the reversible electromotive force of the cell (E) is where 11 = 4, F is the Faraday constant, pb, is the oxygen pressure in equilibrium with the meit and is the oxygen pressure in equilibrium with Cr203 as determined from the free energy data compiled by Elliott et al? The oxide phase in equilibrium with pure chromium was assumed to be Cr If Cr30, were the equilibrium phase the activities derived would be approximately the same, since the best estimated free energy of formation of Cr,O,, if it does exist, is approximately % the free energy of formation of The activity of chromium in Fe-Cr alloys at 1600° C was also determined from the measured electromotive force. The activity of chromium (aCr) is related to the electromotive force as follows: , The oxide phase in equilibrium with pure chromium and Fe-Cr melts from 10 to 52 pct is assumed to be Cr203 so that n equals three. If future work proves the existence of Crs04 in equilibrium with Fe-Cr melts and pure chromium, the experimental results can be reevaluated using a value of $ for n in Eq. 141. A value of ^ for n will make the activities about 10 pct higher. In order for Eqs. 131 and [4J to be valid the electrolyte, ZrOa(CaO), must exhibit predominantly ionic conduction at the temperature and oxygen partial pressure of its use. THE Pittsburgh is one of the most important coal beds of Ohio. It was the last of the great coal beds to be worked extensively in that State, has the largest area of virgin coal, and will in all probability be the last of the great deposits to be exhausted. The line of outcrop sweeps nearly southwest in a sinuous line from Jefferson County on the north to Lawrence on the south, a distance on a bee-line of at least 150 miles. (Fig. 1.) The maximum width of the area under which this coal is due is about 55 miles, but in most places it is less than half that and in the two southern counties it is in places restricted to narrow ridges. The large deposits form three separate areas, which, in order of their importance, are generally known as (1) the Belmont, (2) the Federal Creek, and (3) the Gallia fields.

DURING the past decade, methods of producing bituminous coal in the State of Illinois, which ranks third in production among the states in which bituminous coal is mined, have undergone great changes. From less than one million tons in 1923, the strip-mine production has gradually increased to a high of 11,725,870 tons in 1937. From a negligible amount prior to 1927, the amount of coal mechanically loaded underground had increased to a high of 28,374,362 tons in 1937. The amount manually loaded in 1937 reached a low of 12,332,023 tons. In this same year, this state ranked first in strip-mine production, also in mechanically loaded production. For this reason a study of the influence of mechanization on location of production in Illinois may be helpful in anticipating what may happen in other producing states. The reason for the changes in methods lies in the differences in costs of production. The Bureau of Research and Statistics of the National Bituminous Coal Commission has made public the following costs of pro-duction by various methods in the State of Illinois (district 10) for the last nine months of 1937: all mines, $1.7602 per ton; strip mines, $1.4319; mechanical loading mines, $1.7457; hand loading mines, $2.1793; all underground mines, $1.8703. These are weighted averages for the entire district. Inasmuch as production in 1937 was reported from 58 counties scattered over two-thirds of the area of the state and from five different seams varying in thickness from less than 3 ft. to as much as 12 ft., it is apparent that the location of production must be influenced by the extent of mechanization possible in the various producing counties.

This note will give the cost of driving an adit at the Melones mine, in 1898, and, for purposes of comparison, the cost of similar work, in 1888, at the Hogsback mine, Placer county, Cal. The property of the Melones Consolidated Mining Company is situated on the Mother Lode of California, on Carson Hill, near Robinson's Ferry, and adjoins on the south the famous Morgan mine. The Mother Lode of California extends for a distance of over 100 miles in length through several counties, with a general strike of northwest and southeast. Three veins (commonly called the east vein, middle vein and west vein) comprise the " lode " in this section. The Melones property is situated upon the east and middle vein, and includes 1407 feet on the east vein and 5166 feet upon the middle vein. A shaft had been sunk on the Reserve mine, which is on the east rein, and within 230 feet of the Morgan mine. At the bottom of this shaft drifts and cross-cuts had been run and a large body of ore developed. It was deemed advisable by the Melones Mining Co., which holds this property under bond from the Melones Consolidated Mining Co., to run a tunnel and develop this body of ore at a greater depth. An option was obtained upon the South Carolina mine, which adjoins the property on the south, and is on the same east vein, upon which a tunnel had been run a distance of 1080 feet. This tunnel was cleaned out and continued to a point within forty feet of the Morgan mine. It passes directly under the Reserve shaft, 425 feet below the 200-foot level. The additional length of tunnel to be run was 1923 feet, and

Considering the large area, there is unusually good correlation between pressure losses and points of major withdrawals, these losses indicating that the basin pressure has been materially reduced by withdrawals, primarily from the East Texas Field and secondarily from the old fault-line fields of Limestone and Navarro counties, with the pressure loss varying inversely with the log of the distance from these two main areas of basin withdrawals to the measurement points. Apparently faults located throughout the basin serve as local blocks to continuous pressure gradients. INTRODUCTION The pressure anomalies found in the Hawkins Field, Wood County, Texas,' shortly after discovery have led to an area-wide investigation of the pressure distribution within the Woodbine sand of the East Texas basin. These pressures were obtained by drill-stem tests made for that sole purpose while drilling wildcat wells to deeper horizons. The Woodbine sand of Gulf Cretaceous Age is or has been productive of oil and gas in 42 different fields, with the 28 oil fields currently active having produced 118,000,000 bbl of oil during 1949. With one exception, producing energy for all Woodbine reservoirs has been from water drive provided predominantly by expansion of the tremendous volume of water contained in the Woodbine sand. Purchasers' reports filed with the Corporation Commission of the State of Oklahoma show a total of 168,789,229 bbl. of oil purchased from Oklahoma leases in 1938, or a daily average of 462,436, a decrease of about 25 per cent from the year 1937. The outstanding operation of the year was the further development of the Ramsey pool, in western Payne County, the producing horizon being classified as the Wilcox. This pool was discovered on the last day in the year 1937, by the Mid-Continent Petroleum Corporation drilling on a unitized block in see. 18, T. 18 N., R. 2 E. The map in Fig. 1 shows the development at the end of the year 1938. An important discovery of the year was the Champlin Refining Company's No. 1 Boehm, in Garfield County, sec. 4-24N-8W., the producing horizon being the second Wilcox found at a depth of approximately 6700 ft. This pool was assigned the name of Hillsdale. Some of the offsets to this discovery well had not come up to expectations at the end of the year, but the discovery seems to be important as indicating that the Wilcox sand is productive in the Anadarko Basin area, providing that the right structural conditions are present.

The sudden decease, April 1, 1910, in Chicago, of Dr. Franklin R. Carpenter was a shock to his many friends. He died in his sixty-second year, of heart paralysis. To most fellow-members of the Institute who have followed the progress of the last twenty-five years in the mining and treatment of non-ferrous ores, the work of Dr. Carpenter in that line is familiar; but very few, even of those who knew hinl well in the later years, are acquainted with his earlier struggles to satisfy an inborn hunger for knowledge. The story of his life resembles that of the pioneer who opens up new country; overcoming hardships with indomitable courage, meeting doubts and difficulties with an alert and open mind, and exercising in the face of reverses an unconquerable perseverance. It seems appropriate to place on record in the Transactions a brief outline of the life and work of this eminent engineer. During the past 15 years of his life Dr. Carpenter was much interested in genealogy. In the pursuit of this study as an avocation, he traced his own ancestry to the time when ((Hugh," called "le Charpentier" on account of the dexterity with which he had swung his battle-axe as a crusader, settled in Sussex on lands received from William the Conqueror. The Carpenters came to this country with William Penn. A prominent member of the family was Joshua Carpenter, the founder of Christ Church, Philadelphia. Dr. Carpenter's branch of the family moved from Pennsylvania into that part of Virginia which is now West Virginia, where his grandfather settled in Harrison county, while the grand-uncle went further west, and built the first iron-furnace at Hanging Rock, Lawrence county, Ohio. Introduction THE winning of zinc and lead ores from the comparatively shallow deposits of the Joplin district, presents, few such problems for the mining engineer as are encountered in deep ore mining and in the handling of complex ores. However, for those who are interested in the origin and nature of ore deposits in general, there is much here to investigate, and upon studies in this direction will depend in no small measure the future of an industry that has produced during the year 1916, in southwest Missouri, lead and zinc ores to the value of $26,319,383; adding $46,022,164 to the metallic wealth of the nation. Including the adjacent mines in Ottawa County, Oklahoma, and Cherokee County, Kansas, which are, really continuations of the Joplin district, the total value of ores produced reached the sums of $34,089,503, and that of the metals, $58,927,941.1 The ores produced in the Joplin district are remarkable on account of their almost uniformly high" metal content in both lead and zinc. Their superiority in this regard is unparalleled, and is doubtless clue to certain geological conditions that are now possibly explicable, provided that the artesian circulation = ascension hypothesis of the origin of the ore deposits is proven beyond question to be the only tenable explanation of the facts. These, as well as other valuable zinc-ore deposits, are bound to he exhausted in time, for ordinary mining purposes, acid it concerns the mining engineer that the conditions under which ores of this character were actually deposited in the form in which they occur, may, if possible, be ascertained, in order that he may learn where to look for similar deposits in other regions, or even how to reproduce artificially such condi-

Uniquely colored, thin-bedded quartzite is quarried between Crossville and Crab Orchard in Cumberland County, Tenn. It is produced in all sizes up to the limits of transportation from beds usually ranging in thickness from less than Vi in. to 6 in. The stone is very resistant to wear and weathering and is marketed throughout the country for many different purposes in exterior and interior construction. The annual production exceeds 36,000 tons, valued at nearly $1,000,000. THE building stone of the Crab Orchard District is a fine-grained, thin-bedded sandstone which is so strongly cemented by silica that it may be classed as quartzite. As used in this paper the term building stone includes dimension stone, rubble, ashlar, flagstone, and rough broken stone. The Crab Orchard District is in the central portion of Cumberland County, Tenn. It is named from the town of Crab Orchard near which the stone was quarried first for industrial use. The heart of the district is an area of some 1200 acres from 1 to 3 miles east of Crossville which is 70 miles west of . Knoxville and 125 miles east of Nashville (fig. 1). At the present time, there are about 15 quarries worked by companies and individuals. Geology: The Crab Orchard District is on the Cumberland Plateau, or Cumberland Mountain as it is called frequently. Most of the area is characterized by a comparatively even surface from 1800 to 2000 ft in elevation and is drained by streams flowing into the Tennessee River. Included in the district are two quarries located 7 miles west of Cross-ville and this area is drained by tributaries of the Cumberland River. Most of the quarries are located near the 1800-ft contour which is just below the general upland surface. Uniquely colored, thin-bedded quartzite is quarried between Crossville and Crab Orchard in Cumberland County, Tenn. It is produced in all sizes up to the limits of transportation from beds usually ranging in thickness from less than Vi in. to 6 in. The stone is very resistant to wear and weathering and is marketed throughout the country for many different purposes in exterior and interior construction. The annual production exceeds 36,000 tons, valued at nearly $1,000,000. THE building stone of the Crab Orchard District is a fine-grained, thin-bedded sandstone which is so strongly cemented by silica that it may be classed as quartzite. As used in this paper the term building stone includes dimension stone, rubble, ashlar, flagstone, and rough broken stone. The Crab Orchard District is in the central portion of Cumberland County, Tenn. It is named from the town of Crab Orchard near which the stone was quarried first for industrial use. The heart of the district is an area of some 1200 acres from 1 to 3 miles east of Crossville which is 70 miles west of . Knoxville and 125 miles east of Nashville (fig. 1). At the present time, there are about 15 quarries worked by companies and individuals. Geology: The Crab Orchard District is on the Cumberland Plateau, or Cumberland Mountain as it is called frequently. Most of the area is characterized by a comparatively even surface from 1800 to 2000 ft in elevation and is drained by streams flowing into the Tennessee River. Included in the district are two quarries located 7 miles west of Cross-ville and this area is drained by tributaries of the Cumberland River. Most of the quarries are located near the 1800-ft contour which is just below the general upland surface. At the request of some of the members to whom I have shown a collection of specimens of sulphur from southern Utah, I herewith present some notes relating to the mines and the method of extracting the sulphur from the ore. In preparing these notes I have borrowed from a paper by Prof. G. vom Rath, published in the Neue Jahrbuch fur Mineralogie, vol. i., 1884, dated Salt Lake City, December, 1883. The Cove Creek sulphur-bed, now worked by the Dickert & Myers Sulphur Co., is in Beaver county, near the line of Millard county. It was first discovered by Mr. Ferdinand Dickert in 1869 ; other beds in the same neighborhood mere found by him from 1872 to 1875, making altogether 22 mining claims. The want of railroad communication prevented the early development of these claims; but in 1883 Mr. F. Dickert put up a plant for extracting sulphur from the ore, which proved a perfect success; and in 1885 the property was transferred to a stock company organized under the laws of Utah. The railroad station nearest to the Cove Creek mines is Black Rock, on the Utah Central Railroad, 204 miles south from Salt Lake City, and about 26 miles west of the mines. The road from Black Rock to the mines passes through desert and lava-bed, to the road leading from Kanosh to Beaver, which latter road it joins near Cove Creek fort, a square stone enclosure, erected by the Mormons for protection against the Indians. Cove Creek fort is situated near the eastern limit of a plain bounded on the west at a distance of about 12 miles by the Mineral range, and on the east by the Sulphur mountains, forming part of the Tushar mountains. To the northwest the plain runs into the Sandy desert. About 3 miles from the fort rises a solitary hill about 1000 feet above the

A study was made of the effect of the growth conditions on the perfection of single crystals of niobium (columbium). Dislocation densities, determined by means of double-crystal diffractometer measurements , were not greatly affected by the method of crystal preparation but could be reduced by annealing treatments. However, the size, sharpness, and tilt angles of the substructures, observed with X-ray reflection macrograph, were sensitive to variations in growth procedures as well as to subsequent thermal treatments. Although the dislocation density was the same in both types, there were more low-angle bound-aries in crystals grown by zone melting than in those prepared by strain anneal. Mechanisms to account for these observations are discussed in terms of dislocation movements. A planned study of the structure-sensitive properties of refractory metals required the use of single crystals of a high degree of structural perfection and, for ease of handling, of large cross section. It appeared that the strain-anneal technique could satisfy both of these requirements. First, crystals grown in the solid state have been reported to be more perfect than those obtained from the melt.' Second, the diameters of rods which may be produced by zone melting should have a theoretical limit determined by specific gravity, thermal conductivity, and surface tension, while the diameter of strain-annealed rods is limited only by practical considerations. Previously it was shown that niobium (columbium) single crystals of 1 in. diam2 may be grown by strain anneal, compared to the 0.5 in. maximum diameter achieved by zone melting, as reported for molybdenum by Belk.3 The current research was undertaken to investigate and optimize the effect of various process variables on the perfection of 1/4 and 1/2-in.-diam niobium single crystals grown by strain annealing and to compare their perfection to those grown by zone melting. Characterization of these crystals was more conveniently accomplished by means of X-ray than by metallo-graphic techniques. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Specimen Preparation. Zone-melted crystals of 1/4 in. diam were produced by the standard electron-beam zone-melting technique. The swaged and cleaned rods were outgassed, in the solid state at a temperature near its melting point, at a rate of 12 in. per hr, and single crystals were grown by making two molten passes at 2 in. per hr. By maintaining a zone length of 4 to % in., very uniform single crystals several inches long were obtained. For the strain-annealed crystals, an induction heater was used, in preference to other types of heating, to take advantage of the good penetration of large sections. A five-turn coil, 1 in. long, operating at 10 kc and powered by a motor generator, was contained in a vacuum chamber. The rod, suspended from the upper end, was raised through the coil for both recrystallization and crystal growth. In preliminary work single crystals of the same material were also grown with single and multiturn coils powered by a 450-kc generator. A vacuum of 2 X 10-6 Torr was maintained at temperatures up to 2400°C. Starting with electron-beam-melted ingots of 21/2 in. diam, the analysis for which is given in Table I, the material was cold-swaged to the desired cross section of 1/4 and 1/2 in. diam and then recrystallized. The rods were then strained in a tensile machine and converted to single crystals by passing through the induction coil. As with zone melting, control of orientation is possible by the use of special procedures. Other investigators, see for example Williamson and smallman,4 have reported that orientation control may be achieved by a bending technique. In the present work the strained rod is partially lowered through the coil to start the growth of the crystal. Then it is removed and bent at a point in the poly crystalline portion. Finally, it is returned to the chamber and growth is continued "around the corner". This procedure has certain limitations. If the bending operation exceeds the critical strain, recrystallization may take place. Also, the amount of bending which can be imparted to the rod is limited by coil geometry, and up to now has been 10 deg. However, by repeating the bending and growing operations it should be possible to attain any desired orientation. In preparation for X-ray examination, single crystals were sectioned and planed by means of the spark-erosion technique. POSTSCRIPT.*-Since the publication of my paper upon the blackening of the surface of rocks in desert regions, I have noted that similar views of the origin of superficial discoloration in the case of certain rocks from the Salt Lake basin of Utah have been expressed by Prof. George P. Merrill. In the pamphlet, he described the brown-coated weathered boulders from Tooele county, reaching the conclusion that the discoloration was due to the solution of the manganese and iron compounds 'in the interior of the boulder, while they were in the water, and the gradual bringing of this material to the surface through capillarity and its oxidation when exposed.

FOR a number of years European investigators have used laboratory methods of predicting the probable strength of coke made from coal, and recently several investigators in the United States have reported the use of various tests for this purpose. There is at present no method accepted as standard, however, nor is there even agreement as to the general type of test that should be used. Furthermore, because the details of most of the tests have not been worked out carefully, one investigator can not hope to duplicate the work of another. The extension of coke manufacture to new localities in the United States, and the increasing need for cokes of exceptional qualities made from the most economical mixtures, made it desirable to have some simple laboratory test which will determine whether given coals, alone or blended with other coals, are more satisfactory from the standpoint of coke strength than others of different cost. The work described herein has resulted in the development of a simple laboratory test which, it is believed, can be generally adopted in coal laboratories, and which will give concordant results even though performed by different investigators in different laboratories. The general method of predicting whether a coal or a mixture of coals will produce a strong coke, resistant to crushing and shattering, has been to correlate the known strengths of the cokes produced in commercial ovens with some measurable constituent or with some property of the coals, and then to use the relationship so found for forming an estimate of the coking strengths of coals unknown. Several such correlations have utilized the percentages of the various ultimate constituents of coal, such as the oxygen content and the hydrogen-oxygen ratio;(39)§ other correlations have involved the proportion of a, (3 and y compounds, (17'21,30 or of "oil and solid bitumens."(16,30) Also a relationship has been traced between the coking properties of coal and the rate of change of the resistance offered to the flow of an inert gas by fine particles of the coal while being slowly heated. The year 1941 brought a considerable increase in drilling activity in Ohio. In 1940, the total of wells completed was 1228, whereas in 1941 it was 1561, or an increase of approximately 27 per cent. Of the 1561 wells, 333 were oil wells, 701 gas wells and 527 dry holes. The completions for the past five years are shown in Table I; the number of productive oil or gas wells for the year 1941, arranged by producing formations, are given in Table 2; the number of wells, oil, gas or dry, completed in each county in 1941, in Table 3, and wells by sands in Table 4. The production of oil increased by about 500,000 bbl. in 1941, nearly all of the increase being in Pennsylvania grade. In 1940, the total production was 3,052,000 bbl. from 25,500 wells. In 1941 the total production was 3,547,534 bbl. from 24,801 wells. The increase in production is chiefly due to the Clinton pool in Clayton township, Perry County, which is briefly men- tioned later in this review. The number of oil wells, by grades of oil, and the total quantities produced are shown in Table ;. Annual oil production for five years is listed in Table 6. The average prices paid for crude in 1941 were slightly higher than in 1940 These 1941 prices, with dates of change, are shown in Table 7. The maximum production of natural gas in Ohio was in the year 1915, when the total was just under 80 billion cu. ft. The maximum consumption occurred in the year 1916, and was approximately 169 billion cu. ft. For the past several years, Ohio has ranged from eighth to eleventh, in order of gas production for the different states, being in tenth place in 1940.
