Comminution energy is principally energy of deformation before break-age, which appears as heat. An empirical equation is presented which covers the entire comminution range. The new strain-energy theory considers comminution from the known principles of mechanics and the reduction ratio. Energy requirements according to the different theories are compared.

The American Federation of Labor adopted 'the following resolution at its Atlantic City convention: "WHEREAS, scientific research and the technical application of results of research from a fundamental basis upon which the development of our industries, manufacturing, agriculture, mining, and others must rest; and WHEREAS, the productivity of industry is greatly increased by the technical application of the results of scientific research in physics, chemistry, biology; and geology, in engineering and "agriculture, and related sciences; and the health and well-being not only of the workers but, of the whole population as well, are dependent upon advances in medicine and sanitation; so that the value of scientific advancement to the welfare of the nation is many times greater than the cost of the necessary research; and WHEREAS, the increased productivity of industry resulting from scientific research is a most potent factor in the ever-increasing struggle of the workers to raise their, standards of living, and the importance of this factor must steadily increase since there is a limit beyond which the average standard of living of the whole population cannot progress by the usual methods of re-adjustment, which limit can only be raised by research and the utilization of the results of research in industry;. and

[ ] TUNNELS TO BINS. Originally designed for tunnel work, the strong lightweight liner plates used to construct this 30-ft diameter, 31-ft high, aggregate storage bin have several advantages. Bins and conveyor to tunnels can be quickly erected in any season, for permanent service, or to be salvaged and reused. Armco Steel Corp. (16) ROLLER CHAIN: Engineering Data Book No. 2457 published by Link-Belt Co. is a comprehensive 148-page volume on roller chain and its application. Detailed engineering information covers installation, maintenance and lubrication of chains for drives, conveyors, and sprocket wheels. The book covers selection of drives to meet both standard and special installations. (17) LABORATORIES: The Fisher Scientific Co's. line of 21 basic units of standardized steel laboratory furniture is described in catalog no. 25. The Unitized line was designed to combine the advantages of custom installation with the convenience of selection, delivery and continued flexibility that goes with ready-made units. (18) PUMPS: Two similar, but functionally different types of vertical centrifugal wet-pit pumps; a heavy duty bilge pump for handling solids-free liquids and drainage; and a screenless sewage ejector, constructed to handle sewage and solids carrying liquid; are illustrated in a bulletin from Yeomans Bros. THE determination of the orientation of metal single crystals and the studies of plastic deformation are greatly facilitated by the use of the stereographic projection. To draw a standard projection of the crystal it is necessary to have a tabulation of the angles between the various crystal-lographic planes of the particular crystal studied. Bozorth' has published such a table for the cubic system which can be found in many reference books; such convenient tabulation for the hexagonal metals, however, does not appear to be in the literature, although scores of workers have calculated these angles. Therefore, Table I of angles for magnesium, zinc, and cadmium has been compiled. Since the c/a ratio is different for each of these metals, three separate calculations are necessary. The angles 4 between (HKIL) and (hkil) were calculated by means of the formula: Hh+Kk+½(Hk + hK)1+~3aLl cos The c/a ratios were calculated from data given in the 1948 edition of Metals Handbook. Fig. 1 is a typical (0001) standard projection of zinc. For all practical purposes, it serves for cadmium as well, as can be seen from the table. From the time of its emergence as an independent state until the late 1950's, the Republic of Ireland suffered from chronic unemployment, the lowest living standard in Northern Europe, and-most serious of all-an aggravated emigration problem which drained off most of its talented young people. In 1958, however, there was a drastic legislative reaction to these problems, and this in turn ignited the current mining boom in Ireland. Paving the Way to Prosperity In order to reverse the tide of emigration, the Irish government now realized, challenging domestic employment opportunities had to be increased and living standards had to be raised. It was also apparent that future industrial and economic growth in Ireland had to be based on producing goods for export. The home market could not sustain large-scale expansion, and consequently Ireland's chronic balance-of-payments deficit could best be minimized by producing export goods. These considerations, together with the limited amount of accumulated wealth in Ireland, combined to set the objectives of the country's First Program for Economic Expansion in 1958. The general objectives of this program were (1) to stimulate all segments of the economy, (2) to develop foreign trade and (3) to attract foreign capital.

Mercaptobenzthiazole and its sodium salt are marketed under the trade names Flotagen and Flotagen S respectively, for use as collectors for cerussite and other minerals. The structural formulas for sodium rnercaptobenzthiazole and for sodium ethyl xanthate are: Chemically there is a resemblance between the two compounds, though the free acid (mercaptobenzthiazole itself) is much more stable than xanthic acid. Both are readily oxidized, e.g., by iodine to disulphides, and can be estimated by iodometric titration. Qualitatively they are similar as collectors in flotation, although there are quantitative differences between them that may be important in practice. It is deduced that the influence of the nitrogen atom is subordinated to that of the sulphur atoms, and that the dominant group of these compounds is the mercapto group —SH or —5Na. The general method of investigation has been based on contact tests. Two temperatures, 10" and 35" C., have been chosen, and with a standard concentration of 20 mg. per liter of mercaptobenzthiazole (i.e., of the free acid) the influence of alkali, cyanide and copper sulphate on contact at sulphide mineral surfaces has been studied. This standard concentration corresponds to about 19 mg. per liter potassium ethyl xanthate; it brings out the differences between the minerals better than a higher concentra-

Recently, the mining community has begun to move toward a more prominent place in the structure of American society. Extensive press coverage of our energy problems during the past year or two has led to an increasing awareness on the part of the public of the vital role that mining must play if today's standard of living is to be maintained. It appears that mining may be emerging from a status generally characterized in the public mind as an esoteric, dirty, man-killing, land- scape-despoiling endeavor, to a new stature that may eventually become as respectable as agriculture. To be sure, we are still being criticized, as has been the lot of miners since the time of Agricola. In fact, the clamor has never been louder. Nevertheless, the public, in increasing numbers, is beginning to know it needs us. But we cannot be complacent. Our improving stature brings along with it increasing responsibility. The mineral industry will be expected to produce mineral raw materials and fuels in ever larger amounts and sell them at reasonable prices, in the face of rising labor costs, decreasing labor availability, chacging labor attitudes, increasingly stringent environmental regulation, stricter health and safety standards, and a deteriorating geo-political climate.

This paper describes the U. S. Energy Research and Development Administration's (ERDA) program to develop in situ coal conversion processes, especially gasification. The potential of this technology, the technical directions being explored, and the program strategy to carry the process concepts toward commercialization are emphasized. The geographic location of the U. S. coal resources and a market analysis are described. Commercially successful in situ coal processes could add over a trillion tons of coal to the U. S. coal reserves. The economics of these processes is compared with surface gasification. Independent studies show this process to be 25% cheaper than surface gasification for Western coals. The major projects are briefly described. The Linked Vertical Well process is in the most advanced stage and shows great promise. The last test produced a low-Btu gas averaging 171 Btu per standard cubic foot for average production rates of 8.5 million standard cubic feet per day. The other projects are Packed Bed, Longwall Generator, and Steeply Dipping Beds. Unique factors of the process development are discussed which may lead to commercial processes in the near term. A development strategy is proposed by which this technology could be commercialized before 1983 with potentially lower gas prices and lower environmental impacts, relative to mining plus surface gasification.

In conforniity with the design of the oficials of the United States Steel Corporation for the standardization of the methods employed in the sampling and analysis of all materials encountered in their various lines of manufacture, the Chemists' Committee presents this compilatioti of standard methods for the sampling and subsequent analysis of molten pig-iron. In selecting the methods, the Committee employed the same line of procedure as in former cases, viz., the careful consideration of all the methods employed in each laboratory of the Corporation, evolving therefrom the several methods herein described, the immediate adoption of which is desired. The services of Messrs. W. B. N. Hawk, William Brady, and C. H. Rich, a sub-committee appointed for the preparation of the present paper, are gratefully acknowledged. II. Introduction. A quite obvious cause of nonconformity of results of comparative analyses in the various laboratories of the Corporation has been an apparent lack of uniformity of method in the sampling and analysis of molten iron. This condition is particularly apparent with regard to the determination of the sulphur, numerous discrepancies in which would appear t.o indicate the absence of, and the necessity for, some uniform method of procedure. In the debate between miners and ecologists, our industry has at last begun to get some of its story told. I have been told many times that it is hopeless to even try to get our side across. Some are sure that no one will believe us even when our cause is just. My reply would be that we have to tell the truth; again, again, and again. We will never convert a fanatic, but we must try to reach the reasonable and thinking people. I am encouraged because more of us are trying. Various mining companies here in Arizona have bought newspaper space to set forth some of the facts around our local environmental problems. The Arizona Mining Association co-sponsored a symposium in March: Mining and Ecology in the Arid Environment. The symposium program included tours arranged with local mining companies. The participants saw an acid plant, an acid leaching operation, an alluvial tailings dike, a tailings pond, a smelter, and a couple of open pit mines. This wouldn't phase you until you realized that half the visitors were ecologists, watershed and wild- life managers, and other assorted conservationists. It took a lot of guts. I am proud that we had that much confidence. As Pogo said, "We have met the enemy and they is us!" Actually, we met the enemy and they were just like us-concerned.

INTRODUCTION The Chord property was acquired in 1975 from Roy Chord, an early prospector and miner of the area. He had staked numerous claims on the southern flank of the Black Hills in the early 19501s, and by the late 50’s, many small open pit and underground mines had been or were in operation. By the mid 1960's small tonnages of high-grade oxidized uranium ore had been mined from the property. Starting in 1975, Union Carbide conducted a series of exploration programs to determine the remaining economic potential. The previously mined areas were re-examined in order to define additional oxidized mineralization. Meanwhile, a wide-spaced drilling program was initiated to determine the potential for deeper unoxidized deposits. Through the exploration program of 1979, measured minable reserves in excess of two million pounds of contained uranium had been discovered. GEOLOGY The Edgemont District is located on the southern end of the Black Hills Uplift. A succession of pre-Cambrian to Cretaceous Formations is exposed within the core and across the flanks. The uranium host is the lower Cretaceous Inyan Kara Group which is divided into two formations, the Lakota and Fall River Formations (Figure 1). The basal Lakota Formation rests unconformably on the Jurassic Morrison Formation and consists of fluvial channel sandstones

Carlisle: This is August 1960 and I am sitting across the table from Henry DeWitt Smith. We both took the mining course at Yale the same year; and here we are, over fifty years later, at Nantucket Island where we have spent quite a number of summers together. Now, let's start the questions with something about the center of your career. Let's say Tsumeb; not about the mine itself which people know, but some of the details on how you happened to take it over for Newmont. Mr. Smith: I first heard of Tsumeb, a famous German mine, through our own associates O'okiep Copper Co. From 1935 on, the local management at O'okiep, being reasonably close, kept the New York office informed. It served as a listening post for new mine development, as well as being a highly profitable copper mine in the northwest Cape Colony. We had all known of a famous German mine in South West Africa called Tsumeb. But it had a reputation for not welcoming visiting engineers. One engineer who went to this property for the Ministry of Supply in 1943, '44 and '45 was Arthur Storke. He was much impressed with possibilities of profitable operation. This mine had been operated by a German company since 1910. It was finally taken over by the Custodian of Enemy Property for the Union of South Africa.

INTRODUCTION In inclined sedimentary strata slope failure may occur by sliding along bedding and along a discontinuity or weak zone, as illustrated in Fig. 1. This mode of failure may be called 'bi-linear', as the failure surface is comprised of two linear or approximately linear segments. This type of failure has been suggested for the famous Frank Slide, Alberta, Canada (Cruder and Krahn, 1973) in which an estimated 90 M 5 tons (8.97 x 10 MN) of rock separated from Turtle Mountain and buried the town of Frank. Also, with the increasing depth of open pits and the construction of highways through inclined sedimentary strata this mode of failure is of major concern to the rock slope stability engineer. A computer program for calculating factors of safety for this slope failure mode is provided and includes the ability to vary shear strengths of potential slide surfaces, ground water elevations and wedge geometry. LIMITING EQUILIBRIUM MODEL The simple limiting equilibrium model used in the analysis is shown in Fig. 2. It is assumed that jointing is orthogonal to bed- ding and that the interface between the upper and lower wedges there- fore corresponds to a joint plane or planes. No shear strength is attributed to the interface so that the resultant force, P, from the upper wedge acts normally across the interface. The normal loads

Laboratory-scale intact and jointed rock masses were tested in field and laboratory experiments to investigate tunnel response in high stress environments. In most of the experiments the tunnels were modeled by a rigid-plastic foam polyurethane with a crush strength of 3.4 MPa (500 psi) and emphasis was placed on jointed rock parameters: joint sets (single set of parallel plane joints versus a double set of orthogonal parallel plane joints), joint plane angle with respect to the direct loading direction, and joint spacing. Other parameters were loading stress, loading direction, and tunnel reinforcement strength. Results show quantitatively the increase in tunnel deformation in jointed compared with intact rocks, double versus single joint sets, and large versus small angle between the joint plane normal and the loading direction. A surprising result was the decreases in tunnel deformation with increases in the number of joints across a tunnel diameter. The efficacy of scale modeling with laboratory-constructed rock was tested by modeling complex reinforced concrete and steel tunnel reinforcements in jointed rock masses and comparing the results with large scale tunnels previously fielded in highly jointed granite. Tunnel response was reproduced in surprising detail, including concrete fracture, steel liner bending and fracture, and critical load to produce these responses. The scale models also allowed sectioning of the jointed rock masses to observe gross sliding along the joints that accompanied tunnel failure.
