Discussion of the paper of F. L. Bosqui, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 101, May, 1915, pp. 997 to 1033. H. A. WHITE, Springs, Transvaal (communication to the Secretary*). -It is, as the author points out in his valuable paper, a, fact, that in many plants the "trommel washings" are allowed to become eyesores, but the simpler system of pumping the entire product direct to the tube-mill circuit will avoid the extra expense of separation and small-scale treatment when one considers the relative distance of the points and the proportionately small amount of water. It is a matter of record that in stamp batteries the increase of weight has been developed concurrently with the increased use of tube mills, but independently and on its own merits. The satisfactory duty, excellent running time, and freedom from breakages in the newer mills, such as the Modder Deep, with 2,000-1b. stamps, will probably go far in removing some of the conservative prejudices mentioned by Mr. Bosqui. The success of the City Deep trial of the Nissen stamp cannot be entirely attributed to better feed distribution and discharge effects (published experiments on two-face discharge mortar boxes showed no advantages). Attention is directed to the treatment costs given by the author both before and after the increased capacity resulting from the addition of 16 Nissen stamps at Modder B. It will be observed that the only item of cost resisting the tendency to reduction caused by increased tonnage is that of milling, which has risen 1.3c. With reference to the provision for amalgamation in the new plans, it seems obvious that a great loss of head would be eliminated by passing the tube cone overflow over a separate top series of plates; three at the top and three at the bottom will effect the maximum amalgamation. This plan is followed at the Princess Estate and Gold Mining Co., Ltd., Modderfontein Deep Levels, Ltd., and Geduld Proprietary. Mines, Ltd., but elsewhere reliance is placed upon ample cone capacity and the underflow only is passed over three plates after going through the tube mill, while the overflow is passed direct to the cyanide works; both methods avoid the largely unnecessary elevation of considerable quantities of water, fine sand and slime involved in Mr. Bosqui's scheme.

Developments in California during 1942 were marked by many difficulties in operation, of which the lack of labor and material were the main factors in slowing down work. During the many years of curtailment, which has been effective since 1928, a number of estimates of the state's capacity to produce have been built up, but during the year 44 fields were 'eliminated from curtailment and valuable data were obtained as to the normal capacity of these fields to produce. Because of new discoveries and the normal decline of old fields, which is more than 15 per cent per year, it is estimated that the sustained capacity of the state for a 5-year period is not more than 500,000 bbl. per day. Decline in the rate of production was greatest in the fields in the Los Angeles Basin district. These fields have been produced nearly at capacity for many years and had no reserve of shut-in production. The San Joaquin Valley and Coastal districts have responded well to the increased allotments assigned to them by the Petroleum Administrator for War. All heavy oil fields in the state are on full production, except in the Coastal district, where transportation is the limiting factor. Although approximately 2500 more wells are on production in the state than there were in 1941, the supply of heavy crude has not yet reached the demand. A summary of statistics for 1941 and 1942 is given in the following table. Production in California for 1942 was 680,000 bbl. a day as against 631,000 bbl. a day for 1941, an increase of 7.8 per cent. The present maximum efficient rate has been estimated at 808,000 bbl. per day. This indicates that in the 15 restricted fields of the state there is only an additional 83,000 bbl. per day of light oil available. Drilling Activity Drilling activity during the year was equivalent to but 70 per cent of normal. Although shortages of equipment and labor were in part responsible for the reduced drilling activity, the main reasons were the lack of proved locations due to a cycle of very few new discoveries and the restrictions of Conservation Order M-68. THE Coalinga oil field is located on the west side of the San Joaquin Valley, California. The structure is in general a monocline, the edges of the oil horizon resting on the foot hills and dipping gently toward the east. One prominent anticline occurs plunging southeast. The earlier drilling was done in the foot hills comparatively near the outcrop and the wells were shallow. The sands were followed eastward and, in the case of the anticline, along the plunge, the wells becoming deeper and deeper until the depth of 4,000 ft. was reached and passed. There is nothing to show that the oil will not be found in quantity at still greater depth. In fact, some of the best producers have tapped the sand at close to 4,000 ft. The recovery of oil still farther to the east, and therefore at greater depth, seems to be mainly a question of drilling. In this territory the formations drilled through are chiefly sands and shales; they will not "stand up" in an open drilling hole; the casing has to be carried close to the bit, and it is always difficult to keep the casing free for any considerable distance. Ability to carry casing of comparatively large diameter without conductor pipes for distances of 2,000 or 3,000 ft. or over is desirable in such territory chiefly for two reasons. It makes it possible to enter the oil sand with a pipe of ample diameter; it eliminates one or more expensive strings of casing which act only as conductors for the water string, and furthermore, in territory where waters are encountered which corrode steel rapidly, it makes possible the construction of a rust- and alkali-resisting water string. It is always desirable to shut off top waters, which may lie within 100 ft. or less of the oil sand, with 10-in. pipe. Where the depth is so great that a practical weight of 10-in. pipe will not withstand the probable collapsing pressures, 8 ¼ in. at least is desirable. About the limit of rotary drilling to date in California seems to be the setting of the 10-in. string at 3,200 ft., although the rapid advance in rotary work during the past year seems to indicate that this depth may soon be increased. It is my purpose now, however, to treat only of cable-tool drilling.

(San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) THE lead department of the El Paso Smelting Works at El Paso, Tex., is operated strictly oil a custom basis. The ores treated are drawn from the surrounding territory, comprising New Mexico, Arizona, western Texas, and northern Mexico. Ores received from the last-named section originally amounted to a very large tonnage, but of recent years have dwindled into comparative insignificance so far as this plant is concerned. This has been clue partly to the establishment of a lead-smelting plant at Chihuahua, which is much closer than El Paso to most of the important mines, and partly to the recent revolutionary troubles in Mexico. There are no mines of either lead or copper in the immediate vicinity of El Paso. In general, it may be said that the lead-ore supply of recent years has been uncertain and precarious, with a general tendency toward an excess of silica and a shortage of iron. This latter requirement has been met in large part by the use in El Paso lead furnaces of considerable amounts of roasted heady copper matte from the Chihuahua smeltery and of converter slag from the El Paso converters. These two materials, coupled with complex lead-copper ores from Bisbee, Ariz., have introduced into the lead-smelting operations a most unusual amount of copper, which has had an important bearing upon the smelting practice of the plant. This matter will be discussed later. The ore, loaded in either box cars or gondolas, enters the storage yard on four tracks elevated about 8 ft. above the ground. As all unloading is clone by hand, unloading platforms at the height of the car floor parallel the tracks on each side to afford a runway for wheelbarrows. At frequent intervals these lengthwise platforms are joined together by others running crosswise to facilitate the distribution of the ores evenly over the beds, which are located below and between the tracks. At present much of the bedding space formerly used for lead ores is given over to the copper department, but 20 bins of various sizes are retained for the use of the lead furnaces and the Huntington & Heberlein roasting plant. INTRODUCTION OF FROTH FLOTATION INTO THE UNITED STATES "The introduction and development of the flotation process have proved to be of such momentous importance to the mining industry of the United States that they deserve to be considered historically ." T. A. Rickard l James M. Hyde installed the first froth flotation process in the U. S., about Aug. 1, 1911, at the Basin Reduction Co. plant, Basin, Mont., which was then under lease to the Butte and Superior Copper Co.2 Two months later, the Minerals Separation Ltd.. filed suit in the U. S. District Court of Montana against Mr. Hyde char& him with infringement of their Patent 835, 120/1906. The U. S. District Court decided in favor of Minerals Separation Ltd. on July 28, 1913. This decision was reversed by the Ninth Court of Appeals in San Francisco on May 4, 1914. Then the U. S. Supreme Court, on Dec. 11, 1916, upheld the patent on three counts only but restricted it to 'the use of less than one percent of oil.” The Miami Copper Co. was sued by Minerals Separation on Oct. 10, 1914, for infringement of Patents 835,120 and 962,678, and 1,099,699. The Miami Copper Co. was operating under John M. Callow's froth flotation process Patent 1,104,755/~uly 23, 1914. Miami lost this suit in the District Court of Wilmington, Del., and appealed to the Court of Appeals, Third Circuit, Philadelphia. The Third Court of Appeals decided against Miami, May 24, 1917. The case was referred to a Master and hearings to determine profit and damages were not settled until 1923. Nevada Consolidated Copper Co. was sued Sept. 9, 1919, and Magma Copper Co. was sued Jan. 10, 1920. Thus, the first ten years of froth flotation in the U. S. were beset by patent litigation. This litigation suppressed the free circulation of new discoveries or useful information that might be cited in a patent suit against the originator; it accounts for many of the blank spaces in the historical record. T. A. Rickard3 has reviewed the history of flotation and has given the chain of discoveries, patents, and processes that resulted in froth flotation. INTRODUCTION The regional characteristics of porphyry copper deposits in South America southward from Pantanos and Pegadorcito, Columbia, will be summarized. The age of formation of deposits spans the period from the Permian to the present. Where possible, the general characteristics and the individual structural features of the deposits are integrated into the plate tectonic model. Individual deposits cited in this chapter, located in Fig. 1, are the best known and most fully described, and form the Andean copper belt (Peterson, 1958). Smaller porphyry copper deposits fall both east and west of the line of large, high grade deposits (e.g., Chuquicamata and Toquepala) that make up the spine of this belt. Most of those smaller deposits (e.g., Mi Vida [Koukharsky and Mirre, 19761) are omitted from Fig. 1 and Tables 1 and 2, however. Neither the Andean orogen nor the individual deposits within it are as well de- scribed in the literature as are their counter- parts in the Cordilleran orogen of North America. Therefore, generalizations relying on regional geologic mapping, geophysics, and isotopic geochemistry lack details pertinent to this type of deposit in the Cordilleran orogen. The South American porphyry copper province has been described by Hollister ( 1974) to include most of the Andean orogen excepting the tin province of Bolivia. Porphyry copper deposits have not been commonly found within the tin belt, although copper-tin (e.g., San Rafael, Peru) and copper-tungsten (e.g., Llamuco, Chile) de- posits are known. James (1971) shows the depth to the Moho to be appreciably greater where the tin belt exists, but disclaims any genetic significance from the coincident appearance of the tin-tungsten province and the inhibition of porphyry copper development where the sialic crust thickens. Dates on tin mineralization in this belt (Clark and Farrar, 1973) are similar to some dates for porphyry copper mineralization known else- where in the Andean orogen. It seems that some mechanism is needed to explain the geographic separation of porphyry copper- molybdenum and simultaneous tin-tungsten- molybdenum metallization within the same tectonic system and appearing at similar distances from the trench. The thickened crust of the tin belt is one of the few known differences. Tables 1 and 2 list some of the most important porphyry copper deposits explored to date, but do not include Antaminas, Peru. or a number of other large skarn deposits

PRICE changes in competing fuels in the last three decades have reflected the changes in the consuming habits of the people of the United States. Prior to World War 11 the importance of fuel oil and fuel gas increased almost constantly while the relative importance of both bituminous and anthracite coal decreased. During this same prewar period coal prices increased to a much greater extent than oil prices. In fact, in many years, oil prices declined and in most cases are now no higher than they were back in 1925-26. During the war natural economic trends were entirely upset because of the tremendous petroleum requirements of the Army and Navy. Under these conditions many industrial plants were converted to the use of coal and the new installations in home heating and industrial plants of all kinds which might have used oil were practically eliminated. I therefore raise a question as to there being some difference in standards used by different manufacturers in regard to the dimensions of the shovels for similar sizes and styles, so it may be rather confusing to some of us when we attempt to use the table in this paper and classify the capacity of the shovels as given here with some that are on the market.

A commercially available, portable X-ray spectrograph, lightweight and rugged for vehicle or field camp use, was used to determine Ba, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, Rb, Sr, and Zn in stream sediment geochemical samples. Investigations showed a relative standard deviation of 1-3%, detection limits of approximately 100 pg/g and significant matrix effects. Coefficients of correlation greater than 0.9 were obtained between portable X-ray and emission and atomic-absorption spectroscopy analyses. A geochemical map of a known mineralized area showed good agreement with maps prepared by other methods of analysis and sample media.

Several techniques are presented to adjust small errors inherent in data collected from material balance measurements on the flotation process. The basic technique used is a Lagrange multiplier adjustment of the filtered data taken from the equipment measurements. The raw data are adjusted such that material balances are closed. The adjustments to each data point is inversely proportional to the square of the standard error of measurement. Problem areas in equipment utilization are discussed. Typical results from on-line measurements are presented. This technique can be applied to either on-line process measurements or metallurgical test data.

Three hundred soil samples were collected on a one-mile grid in a 400-square mile area of the Oquirrh Mountains, Utah, including the Bingham-Lark, Ophir, Rush Valley, and Mercur mining districts. The soil samples were analyzed for copper, lead, zinc, silver, molybdenum, manganese, and iron by X-ray fluorescence using arsenic as an internal standard. Anomalies coincide in most cases with the mining districts. However, in the Mercur district no anomalies were detected. Also samples collected one mile from the Bingham mine barely reflect this major producer. No samples were collected within the Bingham mine area.

At the present time, the mine-owner has a number of patent crushers to choose from, when contemplating the erection of a mill; and a number of new ones are yearly brought to notice. We all know that the stamp-mill is the old standard; but several of the patent crushers, especially of the roller-type, are not without their merits. Having had a working experience, extending over a period of four years, with the " Bryan roller quartz-mill," working alongside of stamp-batteries, I take pleasure in giving to the members of the Institute the benefit of my experience with this mill.*

Abstract-To facilitate the efficient handling of large volumes of information generated by logging exploration drill cores, a computer data bank system (GEOBANK) has been developed to store and retrieve the normally difficult to handle geologic information as well as the physical testing data. The data bank systematized the logging of drill core by first developing a standard list of adjectives or descriptors (with the corresponding assigned numerical codes) for the various stratigraphic categories that are also assigned numerical codes. The system uses the "floating-slot" concept and handles the data bank with one single input form.

UNDER existing economic conditions, the treatment of gold ores occupies an outstanding position in metallurgical activity. The increased price of gold has automatically brought about a reclassification of old dumps and low-grade orebodies, and many that formerly were considered valueless are now being vigorously investigated and worked. This situation has developed problems that have taxed the ingenuity and ability of metallurgists to the utmost. Some gold ores give a high extraction of gold by standardized methods of treatment; other ores of apparently similar character yield but a relatively small percentage of their gold when treated by the same processes.

IN 1937 the employees of the Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines Ltd., at Timmins, Ont., Canada, approached organized medicine for a plan to provide themselves and their families with a complete medical service including hospitalization. This approach was made because of two conditions: (1) the necessity for some organization whereby contributions could be made in instalments to offset the sudden and large expense connected with illness for which the average employee is not prepared, and (2) the need for a more cohesive quality of service to replace a contract practice then in vogue, which did not take care of the employee's family or dependents. In different parts of the United States and Canada similar plans were in force, not only for employed groups but for numbers of people in circumscribed areas. In Europe different countries had adopted various forms of health insurance plans. It then was no surprise that these employees as a group should ask for some similar plan. With the cooperation of the management, a plan was instituted. The plan has one object only-the provision of medical services, including the accessory services such as hospitalization, X-rays, nursing, and necessary drugs and medicines. It is not concerned with cash benefits, sickness and accident payments, or any form of monetary return as the result of illness, but is simply an organization to provide medical services and pay for them from a central fund. It is a nonprofit organization and the only shareholders are the employees and their families who contribute and who in turn receive services. The Hollinger plan is limited to the employees of the Hollinger mine, who live in Timmins and the immediate vicinity. At first, the membership was voluntary. In the third year, it was made a condition of employment, with the proviso that at the end of any Association financial year an employee may withdraw if he wishes to do so. After withdrawal, he cannot again become a member until the end of the next Association year, and then only by the payment of the back dues. This step was taken to ensure continuity, and to prevent employees from withdrawing when well and reentering when faced with impending illness or operations. The employee himself is subject to medical examination on application for employment, and if accepted is subject to further examination by a specialist in chest diseases under the Workmen's Compensation Board of Ontario. Thus it is possible to exclude those who have heart disease, tuberculosis, or other disabling conditions when first employed. Wives and families of employees are not subject to medical examination but other dependents of an employee-mother, father, or other relative-who are declared by the employee to be wholly dependent upon him must be examined. The materials containing copper which are refined in the United Statrs, are, for the most part, the natiye noppers of Lake Superior. Al3Ni whiskers were chemically extracted from unidirectionally solidified Al-A13Ni eutectic ingots, bent into loops, and heated for 0.1 to 10 hr at 320°, 415", and 510°C. The initial strains ranged from 0.003 to 0.055. In all cases, permanent plastic deformation was noted after heat treatment. The deformation consisted of relatively uniform bending at low stresses and temperatures and short times and kinking followed by fracture at high stresses and temperatures and long times. After kinking, the whisker segments adjacent to the kinks were found to have straightened, which is evidence of a dislocation condensation mechanism. The range of temperatures and strains at which time dependent plastic deformation was found indicates that creep of whiskers probably plays a role in the creep of A13Ni whisker-reinforced aluminum. WHISKERS may be defined as nearly perfect single crystals which exhibit high strength. Because they can support high stresses at relatively low strains, they have been successfully employed in reinforcing metals at both ambient and elevated temperatures. In studying the creep behavior of A13Ni whisker-reinforced aluminum at elevated temperatures,1,2 it was noted that the composites exhibited measurable creep deformation. This investigation of the creep relaxation of individual A13Ni whiskel, extracted chemically from the composite was initiated to determine if creep of whiskers could con. "bute to the overall creep of the composite material. Many observations of plastic deformation of metal and halide whiskers have been made. Brenner3-8 noted that copper, silver, and iron whiskers exhibited heterogeneous plastic deformation at room temperature when strained beyond their yield points. Gyulai9 and Gordon10 observed plastic deformation of relatively large (>3 µ) NaCl and KC1 whiskers, although the smallest, most perfect whiskers were completely elastic. Eisner" noted plastic deformation and microcreep of iron and silicon whiskers at room temperature after straining beyond the yield point. Whiskers reported to exhibit creep at stresses below the yield point were zinc1'-" and Silicon.15 Cabrera and price" observed some zinc whiskers which crept at room temperature after a short incubation period but then stopped creeping after a short time. Because some of their specimens exhibited no creep, they concluded that those whiskers that crept were relatively imperfect. Pearson, Reed, and Feldman15 observed similar creep behavior of silicon whiskers at 800°C. They also concluded that creep of the whiskers was a result of imperfections in their crystals. Brenner16 observed delayed failure of A12O3 whiskers at elevated temperatures but found no evidence of plastic deformation up to 2030°C (99 pct of E.EREINAN and M.SALKIND,JuniorMembers AIME,are Research Scientist and Chief, respectively, Advanced Metallurgy Section, United Aircraft Research Laboratories, East Hartford, Conn. Maunscript submitted April 5, 1968. IMD the melting temperature). Brenner also noted7 that some copper and iron whiskers exhibited delayed kinking above 350°C while others did not. One can conclude from these observations that small relatively perfect whiskers could exhibit completely elastic behavior during sustained elevated-temperature loading of composites. Since A13Ni whiskers tested in both bending and tension were found to exhibit no evidence of plastic deformation at room temperature'7'18 this study was initiated to determine whether or not creep of A13Ni whiskers occurred at the elevated temperatures at which creep in the composites was observed. Whiskers were chemically extracted from ingots of unidirectionally solidified A1-A13Ni eutectic, constrained in bending to various elastic strains and heat-treated. The bending constraints were removed after heat treatment and the amount of permanent set was taken as a measure of the time-dependent plastic deformation. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Ingots of eutectic Al-A13Ni containing nominally 6.2 wt pet Ni were unidirectionally solidified at approximately 11 cm per hr using a process described elsewhere.19,20 The starting materials were 99.99 pct pure. Cylindrical sections cut from the center of each ingot were placed in a 3 pct aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid and the whiskers were extracted as described previously.17 The whiskers nearest the surface were blackened somewhat due to overexposure to the acid while the center of the ingot was being dissolved These partially attacked whiskers were discarded. An intermediate zone of silver-gray-colored whiskers was collected and stored in methanol for use in relaxation experiments. Individual long pieces of A13Ni whiskers were placed on Fisher Precleaned Microscope Slides. These normally straight whiskers were bent elastically into arcs or loops of varying radii by manipulating their ends with a slender probe. The mass attraction between the whisker and the probe was sufficient to cause the whisker to follow the probe. The whiskers were retained in the elastic bend by the surface tension of a fine residual film on the slides. By using long whiskers, the action of the surface tension on the unlooped ends of the whisker allowed high elastic strains to be maintained in the loops. After each whisker was bent, a photomicrograph was taken for use in measuring the bending strain. The range of strains studied was 0.003 to 0.055. The bent whiskers were then encapsulated in Pyrex tubes at pressures between 10"6 and 5 x 10"6 mm of mercury and heat-treated at 320°, 415°, and 510°C (respectively 53, 61, and 70 pct of the peritectic decomposition temperature). After each heat treatment, the liquid film on the slides was found to have dried, but the whiskers were held in their original shapes by a residue on the slide.
