In 1954, the first year the award was conferred, Fred Searles, Jr., remarked, "The earlier years are the easiest." In this, the second year, it was easy to choose the outstanding mining engineer. Our conferee this year has been destined to mine. He comes from pioneer stock, and though a son of the American Revolution he is most proud that all four of his grandparents came to the Jordan River Valley of Utah the "first summer," which all Utahns will recognize as 1847. At the time of discovery of high-grade ore in Bingham, his grandfather, Archibald Gardner, had a crew of men getting out saw timber in the area. The first claim staked in Bingham Canyon was named the Jordan, and Bishop Gardner was the colocator of the claim as well as the man to record it.

The greatest single obstacle in the path of constructive action in making conservation a reality is the inherent discord in the hearts of men. A perfect society doubtless is many millenniums removed from the present generation, but it must be admitted that progress toward a conservative use of our natural heritage with the altruistic concept of the greatest good for the greatest number for the greatest time can be attained only by a society in which discord is reduced to a minimum compatible with the limitations of human nature. Daily industrial discord is witnessed between management and labor which passes the bounds of arbitration and results in stoppages of production, waste of productive capacity, idle capital, idle labor, and the complete loss of the most unrecoverable element of all-time. The conservation of material things cannot progress independently of the conservation of the efforts of the human worker, and the results of these efforts are proportional to life itself as measured in hours and years. WHEN the Uranium Reduction Co. mill was put on stream in October 1956, one of the many operational problems was that the sand-slime separation circuits could not produce a satisfactory RIP feed, inasmuch as production greatly exceeded de- sign capacity. The original cyclone portion of the circuits consisted of two stages of three 14-in. cyclones in each circuit, as shown in the condensed flowsheet. The high percentage of +325 mesh material in the over- flows of these 14-in. cyclones was not consistent with good operation, and flow rates per ton of ore were high, indicating that not enough of the total solids in the ore was being rejected as sands. It was inferred by members of the metallurgical department that returning the underflows, or sand fraction, from these cyclones back into the drag classifiers was the primary reason for dirty feed.

INTEREST naturally attaches to fissuring and subsidence of the earth's surface, whatever the cause may be, and the induced movement and fissuring of the impervious strata overlying an oil sand is of even greater practical importance because of its bearing upon the recoverability of the portion of the oil not already extracted or extractable by ordinary production methods. It is probably true that significant ground movement induced by oil production occurs only in oil fields in relatively young formations, where the oil comes from incoherent or only slightly cemented sands and oil-soaked clays, but inasmuch as a great proportion of our "gusher" wells produce from "running" sands and yield a large part of the total oil output, it seems worth while to make an effort to inspire the collection and recording of data indicating the nature and magnitude of oil-field subsidence, both surface and subsurface.

Due to a tight ash constraint on the clean coal product and difficult middlings washability characteristics, a considerable amount of coal was being lost in the jig middlings at the Monterey No. 2 Mine. An investigation was conducted into circuitry to recover this lost coal with minimal effect on the total clean coal ash. A reverse two-stage hydrocyclone system cleaning at low specific gravities was selected. This system is currently recovering approximately 5.8 kg/s (23 stph) of 11.5% to 12.5% ash coal. The specific gravity of separation for the system is about 1.5 and the probable error is 0.13.

The communication which I hare to lay before my fellow-members of the Institute, is no elaborate paper, nor the statement of any great discovery; it is simply the record of convenient methods of conducting topographical survey?, and of keeping the notes of the same; methods that have grown out of practical experience, and have saved me many a day's labor by facilitating office and field work, and at the same time secured a greater degree of accuracy than is obtained by the methods now in general use. I assume it as granted that no topographical map is worthy of the name, except it represent the elevations and depressions of the surface by means of horizontal or contour lines. In the Ordnance Survey of Great Britain, the contour lines are traced for every fifty feet vertical height, I believe, by running out the line with level and compass through all its meanderings on the surface; this, of course, is a very tedious, though accurate process, but " in the woods," where many of our surveys have to be made, it would be practically impossible. Some time ago, I made an extensive and quite elaborate topographical survey and contour map of the southern portion of the Cahaba coal-field, in Alabama, the object of the survey being to

Nature: Man is but one of the creatures which in- habit the earth, a dust speck in the universe. Thinking man has been concerned with his place and purpose in the universe since the earliest Egyptian and Chinese philosophers. Ancient creeds, as well as modern religions and philosophies of life, were concerned with the same problem. While such considerations and concepts have been valuable, theoretical philosophizing and dogmatic concepts are inadequate for a satisfactory solution of world problems of today. The concepts of man and life and their ultimate purpose should be sought in the relations of intelligent man to man and their relation- ship to the physical world. The quintessence of nature's accomplishment-man- is also the greatest disturber of nature and the greatest enemy of his own kind. While his spirit and mind defy and overcome natural limitations, his physical self is controlled by the same basic biochemical laws that govern any other form of living matter. This paradoxical duality of human voluntary and involuntary relations to nature is the source of the perpetual conflict between mind and matter. Therefore, the higher the spiritual evolution and perfection of the individual's mind, the greater and deeper the conflicting elements in their expression; and conversely, the simpler the mind or the mental and spiritual heritage, the less is the individual concerned with the conflicting elements.

DURING a recent investigation of high-purity aluminum,' evidence was found for grain-boundary sliding and migration at room temperature. The investigation was concerned primarily with an electron-microscopic study of a fine (approximately 1 micron) network that appeared on the surface of chemically polished aluminum. The nature of the network will not be discussed since it serves only as markers showing relative displacements in this instance. The pertinent observation, shown in Fig. 1, was made on a flat tensile specimen which had been strained about 8 pct at room temperature. As can be seen in this electron micrograph, a grain boundary has undergone a certain amount of sliding. The reason for the existence of the two differently appearing networks is given in the foregoing reference. For present purposes, however, the transition region can be disregarded. A close study of this picture reveals that in addi- tion to sliding there is a narrow band adjacent to and above the grain boundary. Fig. 2 is a schematic drawing showing the essential features of this band.

G. W. Powell (Ohio State University)—Appleton and Bever measured the quantity Es which, for a solid torsion specimen, is basically an average quantity. Es is the amount of energy stored in a solid torsion specimen strained to a surface shear strain of divided by the total number of gram-atoms of alloy in the specimen. It would seem more meaningful and rigorous to deal instead with the quantity which is the energy stored per gram-atom of an alloy uniformly strained to the shear strain . The purpose of this discussion is to demonstrate that as a function of y is readily obtained from the torsion data. radius of the torsion specimen, shear strain at the surface of the torsion specimen density of the alloy, atomic weight of the alloy, and total energy stored in unit length of the torsion specimen. The energy stored in unit length of an elemental tubular section of the torsion specimen is, as given by Appleton and Bever, where E is expressed as calories per gram-atom. Since start-up in 1906, Bingham had been a rail pit, beginning with steam locomotives and converting to electric locomotives in 1923. Ore production was maintained by effective utilization of avail- able rail equipment. From time to time, as it became necessary to deepen the pit and as stripping ratios increased, studies of alternative material haulage systems such as diesel locomotives, conveyor belts and trucks were made. Conversion from rail haulage with electric locomotives could not, however, be justified. Because of a gradual decline in ore grade, a program was approved in 1963 to raise ore production to 108,000 tpd. The decision posed a serious problem: due to built-in inflexibility and other limitations, a parallel expansion of the rail haulage system was impractical. (Track and trolley wire relocation causes greater shovel downtime than required for normal maintenance; instability of the dumps and the resulting additional track maintenance increases greatly as the daily volume of waste material increases.) Studies indicated that economically the most favorable course of action would be the replacement of rail haulage on the upper levels of the mine by truck haulage.

Results of correlations between strength-development and sintering shrinkage occurring during induration are presented. A mathematical treatment of the shrinkage kinetics is, next, given and is based on the use of semi-empirical equations. The discussion stresses the significance of kinetic constants and activation energies in the assessment of iron ore concentrates for pelletizing and induration. Next, starting with the assumption that there is a need for parameters to characterize the iron-ore concentrates and relate these parameters to shrinkage-kinetic constants and balling behaviour, results of compaction measurements and pore structure characterization (mercury porosimetry) are presented and discussed.

THE world production of copper for the first eight months of 1927 shows an increase of 3 per cent over the same period in 1926. Since February of this year, however, production has been considerably curtailed. The United States reduction in the last four months has been offset by the increased South Ameri-can and Belgian Congo production. The United States is now producing 58 per cent of the world production, Chile and Peru 17.3 per cent, Belgian Congo 5 per cent. In 1926 the United States produced 54 per cent, Chile and Peru 16.3 per cent, Belgian Congo 6.3 per cent. Results of a laboratory investigation of some sintering variables are presented. The effect on physical properties of mix component variation and rate of cooling of the sinter is illustrated by crush and tumbler test results and data of reducibility tests and microscopic examination of sinters are shown. The results of using solid additions in the mix to improve bed permeability are given.

A novel process is described for the selective flotation of scheelite from low-grade (- 0.5% W03) tungsten ores having appreciable quantities of calcareous and siliceous gangue minerals. Specifically developed for the Tempiute, Nevada facility of Union Carbide, the process yields tungsten concentrates exceeding 15 percent W03 with at least 85 percent recovery. This condition was not achieved through conventional processes. This process consists of conditioning the ore pulp with judicious amounts of lime, followed by soda ash and sodium silicate as modifiers. The scheelite is then floated using a mixture of oleic and naphthenic acids as collector. Contrary to the common observation as to the deleterious effects of calcium in fatty acid flotation systems, lime addition is found to be beneficial in achieving satisfactory results. The process has also shown excellent results on a Brazilian scheelite ore.

Problems related to strip and auger coal mining have grown with the development of the industry and the economy. New technology has produced equipment that has made mining by surface methods not only highly productive, but potentially highly destructive of water resources and natural environments. On the other hand, growth of the economy has produced an increased demand for clean water and created new demands for amenity values that natural environments provide. Thus, opposing forces have created conflicts in resource use. And these conflicts have made surface mining highly controversial. Resolving the controversy will require the solving of complex economic and social problems. The essence of the economic problem created by surface mining is that, in the absence of proper regulation, substantial costs resulting from the process are borne by the public rather than the mine operator. The major goal for the regulation of the surface mining industry is to provide controls which will promote the attainment of maximum social welfare. Deciding upon the type of controls required, and how to apply them to attain a social optimum, however, poses some very difficult problems. In a comprehensive article on this subject, David B. Brooks defined the problem and suggested that benefit- cost analysis might be helpful in providing guidelines for making decisions about surface mining regulations.1

Abstract-The use of computer models to design the ultimate open pit limits during feasibility studies as well as during long-range mine planning is becoming an enforced Practice in all types of mining, e.g., ferrous, non-ferrous, and coal. As a result, the state of the art in computerized ultimate pit limit design methodologies and associated computing and optimizing techniques has advanced considerably in recent years. Unfortunately, very little has been published to date regarding the preferred ultimate pit limit design philosophy, i.e., optimizing m satisfying, or regarding the modeling approaches being used for different types of orebodies. This paper reviews the current state of the art in various modeling approaches and optimizing techniques that are in use for different types of deposits, through available literatures and personal communications.
