A unique feature of Potash Co. of America's A new potash property near Saskatoon, Sask., is the use of semi-dome-shaped buildings for product storage. Four domed structures, timber-framed and corrugated-sheet covered, are being built; each designed to handle 20,000 cu yd. The relatively small capacity units, PCA believes, give flexibility not only in storing different grades and sizes of product, but also in permitting greater ease in shipping products as market demands change. The domed buildings are 150-ft diam, comprised of a 16-ft-high concrete wall base, topped with a metal sheet-covered octagonal timber frame. The dome of each unit is designed to fit very closely the angle of repose of the contained material, which results in the maximum usable volume. The entire roof is flood coated with a bitumin to provide a complete weather seal.

Edward S. Simpson, Perth, Western Australia (communication to the Secretary): In 1896 the East Coolgardie gold-field was divided into three fields, viz. : Area, square miles. Officia1 Centers. (1) East Coolgardie,. . 634 Kalgoorlie. (2) Broad Arrow,. , 588 Kurawa. (3) Northeast Coolgardie,. 22,960 Kanowna. The whole of the area embraced by the eastern gold-fields is covered with late Tertiary sands and gravel, with occasional beds of clay shales. These mostly overlay granite which occasionally shows through in small round hills. At Coolgardie, Kalgoorlie and other mining centers, belts of diorite, serpentine and highly metamorphosed sedimentary rocks appear on the surface. The rainfall at Kalgoorlie in 1897 was 4.75 inches. That the climate has not always been so arid is evidenced by the recent discovery at Coolgardie (only twenty-five miles away) in the late Tertiary formations of a thick bed of brown coal, containing numerous fossil fern-leaves. As assayer and mineralogist to the Government of Western Australia I have had occasion to examine a large amount of the Kalgoorlie ores, both in Perth and at the mines at Boulder itself. The first part of this paper describes a new approach to the problem of energy relationships in fracture and comminution. The basic theoretical method used (as contrasted to previous empirical or semi-empirical approaches) is an attempt to verify or disprove the hypothesis of von Rittinger, In the second part of the paper, theoretical conclusions for the three headings of single fracture, plural fracture, and comminution are tested. Agreement between theory and experimental results is demonstrated. The classical hypotheses on the energy relationship in brittle fracture are those of von Rittinger-that the energy required is proportional to the new surface formed— and the alternative one of Kick.' Over the years, repeated attempts have been made to discriminate experimentally between the two assumptions, or to replace both of them, as has been done by Bond? However, no semblance of agreement seems to exist among different investigators. This paper is the first in a series essaying a new approach to the entire problem of energy relationships in fracture and comminution. The purpose of this program of research is to verify (or disprove) the hypothesis of von Rittinger. In contrast to previous empirical or semi-empirical approaches to the problem, the basic method adopted is theoretical. The prime aim is to determine the distribution function for fragment size theoretically and to verify the predicted distribution experimentally. This approach should make possible determination of the total surface of the particles by integration over the corresponding distribution function; one may hope that this direct procedure will yield more definitive results than use of gas adsorption or other methods. The surface area so obtained can then be compared with experimental energies, as obtained by Bergstrom, Sollenberger, and Mitchell,4 for example. It is convenient to distinguish between single fratture, plural fracture, and comminution. Single fracture of a brittle solid is defined as fracture by an external stress system which is removed instantly and permanently when fracture is initiated. Plural fracture consists of single fracture of the original specimen, followed by a sequence of only a few secondary fractures; comminution differs in that the sequence of secondary fractures consists of a large number of repetitive steps. For single fracture, Gilvarrys has given a rigorous derivation of the proper distribution function for fragment size, based on a closely defined physical model and deduced strictly by the laws of probability. Gilvarry and Bergstrome have compared the predictions of the theory with experiment, and have found excellent agreement. The prior work of Gilvarry and of Gilvarry and Bergstrom considers only single and plural fracture. The purpose of the present paper is to extend the discussion to the case of comminution. For prefatory purposes, the theory of Gilvarry for single fracture will be outlined. The considerations will then be applied to the cases of plural fracture and comminution. SINGLE FRACTURE The derivation is based on the Poisson law.7 For Points distributed with mean density y over a domain, this law states that the probability p(t)dt of one point lying in the range t to t + dt with none in the interval 0 to Ms p(t)dt = ye-yt dt. For this distribution to be valid, it is necessary and sufficient that the points be distributed at random, individually and collectively in the sense of ~~~.7 The former qualification requires that the position of One Point be independent of another, and the latter implies that the probability of a region containing a

Basis for the increased interest is a development of a keener understanding of the writer's own mental processes and the practical procedures involved in writing a report. The book is concerned with basic principles and procedures, rather than incidentals. It emphasizes the importance of correct attitudes and suggests a method of approach and organization. In the first part of the book, design and composition are considered. Next, the text gives directions for setting up both the long and short term report. The third part of, the book gives a systematic procecure for critical examination of the report. The fourth section presents a 16 week course in report writing. The Rocks of the Sekondi Series of the Gold Coast, by A T. Crow. Gold Coast Geological Survey. 7s. 6d, 73 pp., 1952.-The book describes the results of careful and detailed mapping of the Sekondi Series. The Sekondi-Takoradi area is undergoing intensive development, including extensions to Takoradi Harbor and to the railways. Details are given on the nature, extent, and structure of the Series and many faults which cut into them. The book is aimed at those with a practical interest in the area. It is illustrated with geological maps and drawings of horizontal sections. In the back, the terrain of the series is illustrated in a group of plates.

Ossi E. Palasvirta (Development Engineer, Oliver Iron Mining Diu., U. S. Steel Gorp.)—The authors are to be congratulated for their interesting article, which thoroughly illustrates the variables inherent in filtration of taconite concentrate. The work and the conclusions based thereon largely parallel the test work done by the writer at the Pilotac plant" and the experience gained with a commercial size agitating disk filter in the same plant. At Pilotac, however, a thorough study was also made of the effect of depolarizing (demagnetizing) the filter feed, and it is the purpose of this discussion to comment on the merits of depolarization of the magnetite concentrate prior to filtering. The work at Pilotac was done in three phases: 1) preliminary laboratory testing with a circular filter leaf of 0.047 sq ft, followed by 2) plant testing using a 4-ft diam, single-disk agitating filter that was purchased on the basis of the pilot tests on the 4-ft model. In the laboratory tests depolarization was achieved by slowly withdrawing' batches of thickened concentrate from a coil producing an alternating field of about 300 oersteds. In plant tests the standard Pilotac procedure' was employed, wherein the pulp falls freely through the depolarizing coil. The preliminary tests in the laboratory at first seemed to indicate that although depolarization of the filter feed decreases the cake moisture, it also tends to decrease the thickness of the cake, thus decreasing filtering rate. The tests with the 4-ft disk filter soon showed, however, that the compactness of the cake, attained during the form period because of depolarization, permitted a considerable decrease in drying time without any sacrifice in final moisture content. Thus, the filter could be operated at a much higher speed, and the overall capacity was higher than with magnetized feed. Because of the great compactness of the cake there was little shrinkage during the drying period, which prevented cracking and subsequent loss in vacuum. This in turn permitted operation with as thick a feed pulp as the diaphragm pumps could handle, eliminating the necessity of pulp density control. On the basis of these findings, the 6-ft agitating disk filter has been operated at 2 rpm, using feed pulps varying from 65 to 73 pct solids. Initially Saran 601 was used as medium, but it was later replaced with a relatively open, tight-twist nylon cloth. Filtering rates up to 750 lb per ft- er hr can be attained with feeds averaging about 70 pct- 270 mesh, and there is no trouble because of cracking. The cake moistures vary between 8.5 and 9.5 pct. To recapitulate, the merits of depolarizing the filter feed may be summed up as follows: 1) The well dispersed pulp shows less tendency to settle in the filter tank. 2) The homogeneous filter pool results in more even cake formation. 3) Because of absence of flocs, great compactness of cake is attained during the form period. 4) The cake does not tend to crack during the drying period. 5) A drier cake is produced. 6) A shorter drying period is necessary, permitting higher operating speed, which in turn results in increased capacity. 7) Density of the feed pulp can be kept as high as the equipment can handle. This increases capacity, since it is directly proportional to the percentage of solids in the pool. A few tests were also made to study the effect of chemical flocculants on filtration efficiency. Results showed that the effects of chemical and magnetic floc-culation were quite similar. Thus the use of a floccu-lant would impair rather than improve the filtering of magnetite concentrate. A. F. Palasvirta for his comments, particularly in view of the encouraging results obtained with demagnetized taconite concentrate. In our studies an attempt was made to evaluate the effects of depolarizing the feed to the plant filters by passing the slurry through a coil, similar to the method described by Palasvirta. Unfortunately, in our experiments there were no startling improvements in performance level, neither cake rate increase nor cake moisture reduction. However, when slow filter cycle speeds were employed, the filter cake tended to crack and the vacuum level dropped, resulting in an increase in cake moisture content. When demagnetized feed was used during slow speeds, no cake cracking was evidenced and the vacuum level remained constant. Thus the depolarizing coil was found necessary only in cases of cracking. It should be noted that most of our test work concerned a feed of 85 to 90 pct —335 mesh and about 60 pct by weight solids concentration. This contrasts with 70 pct —270 mesh and 65 to 73 pct by weight solids as noted by Palasvirta. Reviewing both sets of results, it might be concluded that depolarizing may be successfully employed to alleviate cake cracking tendencies and may markedly improve cake rates and moistures on the coarser taconite concentrates. Further investigations may disclose the exact relationship of grind and pulp density to the depolarizing action.

INTRODUCTION This paper deals with a procedure for planning the mining of an orebody for which cross-sections, plans, grade of ore, and a geological estimate of the ore reserve have been prepared. The procedure begins with the preliminary selection of a mining method or methods on which an engineering evaluation will be carried out. The engineering evaluation is described in three parts: Conceptual Studies Engineering Studies Detailed Design An overall planning model is presented, plus an expanded model for the Engineering Study Throughout the discussion of the planning procedure, reference is made to three bulk mining methods, including block caving, sublevel caving, and longhole sublevel stoping, including a summary of the main characteristics of each of these mining methods. The planning model is designed for a longhole sublevel stoping method, but with modification, will apply to other methods. PRELIMINARY SELECTION OF A MINING METHOD To experienced mining engineers, identification of the nominal mining method for a given orebody normally involves a large measure of judgement. The geological data is reviewed to determine the configuration of the orebody, including size, shape, dip, grade, and metal distribution. Geotechnical data is considered, including the competence of the ore and host rock, faults, fracture patterns, groundwater, and the potential for in situ stresses. Geographical data, including the natural and societal conditions, are evaluated for their effect upon the mining method, and finally, economic data, basically defined as the value of the ore in the ground, but more specifically, including grade of mineable ore, distribution of ore grade throughout the orebody, and metallurgical recovery, will have a bearing on the nominal method selected. Preliminary evaluation of these factors will result in the elimination of the obviously inappropriate mining methods, leaving some method or methods for further, more detailed study. Since ore does not occur in simple geometric shapes, the method selected for more detailed study will require some variation to the standard. A few key factors will bear heavily on the selection and provide a basis for the most realistic choice. Geological Data The configuration of an orebody defined by the horizontal and vertical dimensions, the dip and strike, and the possibility of repetitive occurrences will have the major influence on the selection of the mining method. For bulk mining methods, the dip of the orebody should be steep, or the orebody must be thick so that gravity can be utilized to deliver fragmented ore to a central gathering area. Geotechnical Data The geotechnical data will be studied in greater detail when the nominal mining method has been selected and the engineering evaluation is undertaken. However, some basic initial information must be available. The structural strength of the ore and host rock, including the effect on it of faulting, fracturing, and insitu stresses, must be known. Data from exploration drilling and examination of drill core will assist in the preliminary assessment of these factors. Highly fractured ground may suggest a caving method of mining for certain orebody configurations, whereas highly competent or strong ore might indicate that for a similar configuration, longhole sublevel stoping will more likely succeed. Data obtained on groundwater from exploration drilling will be considered to determine if it can be controlled, or if it will represent a long term major expense or a hazard for which no control is possible.

Some years after Nobel made his epoch-making contribution to the knowledge of high explosives, Sprengell described a new class of detonating explosives consisting of mixtures, made immediately before use, of an oxidizing agent and a combustible substance.2 The novel feature of the Sprengel explosives is that the constituents alone are non-explosive during manufacture, storage and transport. Despite this advantage, and although some of these have been used in important work, they are now little used, possibly on account of the greater inconvenience to the user, compared with explosives supplied by the manufacturer in final form. Liquid-oxygen explosives are a type of Sprengel explosive in that the oxidizing agent (liquid oxygen) and the combustible substance or substances (solid carbonaceous matter alone or in combination with liquid hydrocarbons or even metallic powders and, at times inert absorbents) are brought together immediately before use. The components separately are non-explosive. The possibility of using liquid oxygen as one of the components of an explosive was perhaps first suggested by Sprengel, who stated that the beau ideal of a detonating explosive was a mixture of eight parts of liquid oxygen with one part of liquid hydrogen. In one field in South Texas, approximately 72 per cent of the pressure build-up results show a characteris-i.rtic "hump" (i.e., the pressure builds up and then falls off) which makes interpretation by. standard methods impossible Correlation of size and time of hump with formation permeability. well productivitv index, and method of completion led to the tentativc, conclusion that the humps were caused by segregation of gas and oil in the wellbore after closing-in"'. This conclusion was confirmed by performance of simple laboratory bubble-rise experiments, by theoretical bubble-rise time calculations, and by a detailed calculation of PVT behavior in the well of a particular well Oil which accurate Surface and bottom-hole pressure measure-ments were untile. The hump behavior has since been found to occur in many other fields. The cause, however, is not the mine in all cases. In some of these the hump is trace-ahie to leaks in the tnbing which allow influx from the annulus after closing-in. In other cases the hump is traceable to leaks in the device separating pay horizons in dually completed wells. It is concluded that the recording of both surface and bottom-hole pressures is desirable in wells which show an anomalous build-up behavior. A number of field examples is discussed where use of both sets of measurements enables the cause for anomalous behavior to he found, (and a reasonable interpreation of bottom-hole pressure to be made. INTRODUCTION Theoretically the pressure build-up in an infinite reser-voir should be a linear function of In [(t + at)/nere t is the production time and At a the closed-in time. Some of the variations from this behavior arc well known, such as the curved portion immediately after shut-in which results from after-production and skin effect, and the flattened end portion which results from boundary effects in a limited reservoir. The effect of stratified producing zones and irregular geometrical drainage patterns may also contribute unusual characteristics to build-ups. However, the effect of still another phenomenon—that of movement of fluids within the wellbore—has been neglected in most build-up studies to date. Fluid movements within the wellbore after shut-in occur as a result of after-production, packer failures, leaks in the casing or tubing, or buoyancy of the gas phase when both gas and liquid are present in the well. Each of these movements can influence the pressure build-up, sometimes sufficiently to negate use of the data for computing permeability or stabilized build-up pressure. Examples of each of these phenomena are discussed below. FIELD OBSERVATIONS ON HUMP BUILD-UPS In approximately 75 per cent of the wells in a medium-sized field in South Texas the pressure build-up curves rise to 3 maximum and then decline to what appears to be a stabilized reservoir pressure as shown in Fig. I. Similar behavior has also been observed in wells in other fields in Texas and Louisian:,. Because of the possibility of such behavior being a mechanical failure of the pressure bomb. the bombs were run in tanden into one well which had been known to exhibit this behavior. When both bombs recorded identical curves with the characteristic hump, it was inferred that the unusual build-up is a result of well or forma-

MECHAMCAL, electrical, and other property measurements are often more easily made on wires than on sheets. In order to carry out transmission electron microscopy on the same material used for property determinations, we have developed a method for preparing thin foil specimens of wires. The technique was developed for 0.030 in. diam tungsten wires, and is a modification of the thinning techniques used by Wilsdorf, et al 1 A length of wire is first ground to about 0.010 in. thick by mounting the wire in low melting temperature wax, hand grinding a longitudinal flat, removing and reversing the wire in the mount, and then grinding a second parallel flat. The 0.030 in. wide and 0.010 in. thick strip is cut into 1/8 in. lengths to fit in the specimen holder of the electron microscope. Next the specimen is gripped in platinum-tipped tweezers (the anode) and placed 2 mm below a hol- low copper cathode with a 0.010 in. ID nozzle. Electrolyte, 10 pct NaOH, flows by gravity feed through the nozzle onto the specimen, as shown in Fig. l(a). Polishing is carried out until a shallow impression is made on one surface, and then the specimen is turned over and the opposite surface indented. The metal between the two impressions should be about half the specimen thickness, as is shown by the heavy line in the cross section in Fig. l(b). The entire specimen is then electropolishedin 2 pct NaOH until a hole appears at the location of the indentations. The apparatus is shown in Fig. 2, and is essentially the same as that used by Wilsdorf et al. at The Franklin Institute. Light is reflected by a mirror onto the bottom surface of the specimen! which is viewed by a stereoscopic microscope placed above it. Polishing is carried out until light is seen, indicating that a hole has formed, and then immediately stopped. The specimen is washed in water. alcohol, and ether, and is then ready for examination. The specimen should be reversed in its platinum clip during electropolishing to insure equal polishing on both sides of the impression. For tungsten, indenting at 120 v and 0.04 amp takes less than 1 min, and final polishing, at 10 v and 1 amp, less than 5 min. The portion of the specimen available for transmission microscopy surrounds the hole, as is seen by the dashed lines in Fig. l(b). Slight electroetch-ing accompanying electropolishing reveals the mi-crostructure, as seen in Fig. 3(a) by light microscopy. Low-magnification electron microscopy, as in Fig. 3(b), enables the same areas and grains to be viewed and identified when subsequently examined at high magnification. Measurements have been made of the thermal conductivity and electrical resistivity of two specimens of 0.005-cm (2-mil) Be-Cufoil over the temperature range -140° to +200°C. The thermal cmductivity of Be-Cu Alloy 125 was found to be significantly higher than that of Alloy 25, which had a higher impurity content. The thermal conductivity and electrical resistivity values obtained were in concordance with the Smith and Palmer relation for copper alloys which states that ? = 0.0239 (T/p) + 0.075 where A is thermal conductivity (W cm-' deg-'), p is electrical resistivity (microhm-cm), and T is absolute temperature (OK) , indicating that the Smith and Palmer relation can be used to predict the thermal conductivity of this type of Be-Cu alloy over the temperature range -140" to + 200°C to within an accuracy suitable for most engineering applications. THE National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md., requested the National Bureau of Standards to measure the thermal conductivity of 0.005-cm Be-Cu foil which was to be used to fabricate antennae for use in Radio Astronomy Explorer space craft. It was felt that measurements had to be made on the actual antenna material, rather than on a thick bar of similar material, since the cold-working and age-hardening properties of the alloy would make it very difficult, if not impossible, to place a thick bar in the same metallurgical state as the 0.005-cm material. As discussed in Section 111 of this paper, the thermal conductivity of many copper alloys can be computed rather accurately from electrical resistivity data using an empirical relation developed by Smith and palmer' and further confirmed by owell.' However, there has been very little work done on correlating thermal and electrical conductivities on Be-Cu alloys. We were reluctant to assume the validity of the Smith-Palmer relation on Be-Cu alloys because of the very large mass difference between beryllium and copper. As will be seen, however, our experimental results indicate that the Smith-Palmer relation is valid for the two alloys on which we made measurements. I) DESCRIPTION OF SAMPLES Samples of Be-Cu Alloy 25 and Be-Cu Alloy 125 were furnished to NBS in the form of rolled strip material, 0.005 cm thick by 5.08 cm wide. The Be-Cu Alloy 25 was purchased by NBS in the form of a continuous length of flat strip. The Be-Cu Alloy 125 was furnished to NBS by Goddard Space Flight Center in the form of two lengths of strip that had been formed into "tubing" of about 1.2 cm diam, with one side of the strip overlapping (but not connected to) the other side by about 90 deg. This "tubing" had been opened up to be flat and then rolled onto spools of about 3 cm diam. When unrolled, the strip would spring back into tubular form. Samples of both of the Be-Cu alloys were chemically analyzed by the NBS Analytical Chemistry Division. The beryllium content was determined quantitatively by the phosphate-gravimetric method to be 1.83 wt pct for Alloy 25 and 1.80 wt pct for Alloy 125. The two alloys were also examined by a general qualitative spectrochemical method for metallic elements. The Alloy 25 specimen contained between 0.1 and 1.0 wt pct Al, Co, Fe, and Si and between 0.01 and 0.1 pct Ni. The Alloy 125 specimen contained between 0.1 and 1.0 pct Co and between 0.01 and 0.1 pct Al, Fe, and Si. Other metallic elements present were in amounts less than 0.01 pct. The NBS Engineering Metallurgy Section measured the tensile strength, elongation, and Knoop hardness of both the Be-Cu Alloy 25 and the Be-Cu Alloy 125. These are given in Table I. The NBS Engineering Metallurgy Section also prepared photomicrographs of the two alloys; these are shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

Many different shapes of drill bits are in use with hammer drills, but little definite information is available whereby to judge which one of these shapes is the best. The following investigation was undertaken in order to determine what effect, if any, the shape of the cutting edge has on the cutting speed and wearing qualities of drill bits. The bits tested were those in common use, namely, the 4-point or cross bit, the 6-point bit, the Z bit and the "Carr" bit. The rock in which the tests were made was the red granite from southeast Missouri. It is a coarse crystalline granite containing an unusually large amount of quartz and is extremely hard, and on account of its uniform texture is admirably adapted to this work. While tests in other rocks might show somewhat different results, nevertheless it is the opinion of the authors that the relative cutting quality inherent in the shape of the bits would be the same in all rocks. Other qualities, such as mudding freely, freedom from fitchering, etc., might make one bit more desirable than another in softer rocks. Description" of Bits Tested 'I'he 4-point bits were the usual shaped bits commonly made on the Leyner sharpener, with 14' taper on the wings and a 90" angle between cutting edges. Some tests were run at 85 Ib. pressure with a 4-point bit made with a 50 taper on the wings; this bit was formed with the Carr bit dies. The 6-point bits were the usual shaped bits made on the Leyner sharpener. The Carr bits were made with a 5º taper and an angle of 100" between cutting edges.

With a growth of 718 per cent in the petroleum industry from 1901 to 1931, there was a corresponding increase in the demand for technically trained men in the industry. This was first met by increasing numbers of college graduates from the old established courses in chemistry, geology and engineering. However, a need began to be felt for scientists and engineers specially trained for the petroleum industry. In 1912 the University of Pittsburgh established the first department in any university in the world that offered major work in petroleum engineering and petroleum geology. In Europe, the first major work in petroleum engineering was offered in England in 1913 at the University of Birmingham. The University of California and Stanford University offered major work in petroleum engineering in 1915. Since that time at least 10 other American universities and colleges have offered major work and at least 12 others are now offering some courses dealing with petroleum and the petroleum industry.

In a recent study1 of the deformation of metastable beta copper-zinc and beta copper-tin crystals, it was established that the parallel markings that appear on the surface of these crystals after slight deformation represent lattice transformations. Stereographic analysis showed that in beta copper-tin, the poles of these markings deviated one or two degrees from poles of the form {133}. In beta copper-zinc the plane delineated by the markings corresponded to no one crystallographic plane of the matrix lattice; the marking poles deviated from 5° to 11° from poles of the form (110), and were displaced only a few degrees from (110) zones. Inasmuch as the new transition lattices produced as the result of the deformation are different for each alloy, it was thought at first that the habits of the markings might be the result of a cooperation between matrix lattice and transformed lattice. (Both matrix lattices arc body-centered cubic.) Such a cooperative effect is thought to obtain in the formation of Widmanstätten figures, for it is well known that the matrix lattice alone does not determine the habit assumed by a segregate phase. On the other hand, it is not inconceivable that the dissimilarity in marking habit might be due to differences in deformation characteristics of beta brass and beta bronze. Barrett and co-workers2 have shown that slip-line habits in pure iron are markedly different from those in high-silicon ferrite; and although it has been repeatedly demonstrated that plates of a segregate phase do not necessarily form on the slip planes of the matrix lattice, deformation characteristics may be more intimately allied with plate formation when a transformation is made to occur as a result of plastic deformation. However, there is the fact that the orientation of markings in metastable beta copper-zinc is the same whether the markings be produced by quenching, deformation, or liquid-air cooling; likewise, quenching and deformation markings in metastable beta copper-tin are oriented in the same way with respect to the beta matrix. composition, he cannot reasonably asl; the manufacturer to guarantee that this composition shall give certain physical results. W. R. Jones, Pittsburgh, Pa. : The question that naturally occlun to me is this: Has Dr. Dudley in his inveatigtrtions been aiming to prove a theory, or has he been guided by an earnest desire to discover what are the proper elements in the composition of a good-wearing steel rail ? Unfortunately, for correct chemical information, he has omitted in his analgw two very importnat elements,—sulpbur and copper. Now, before we will even begin to admit the correctnets of Dr. Dudley's conclusions and the formula he prescribes, we will at the start question the propriety of any chenlist or scientist prescribing a formula for making steel when he has iguared such important ele ments as sulphur aud copper. I, for one, will not accept any such formula. Are we sure, or is Dr. Daclley sure, that the chemical analyseq embodied in his paper are correct? This may seem a presumptuous queetion, yet, with my experience with chenlists, I naturally doubt the correctness of the analyse8, and, before I will accept them as correct, I will ask that comparative tests of phosphorous and man ganese be made by the Pennsylvania Railroad chemists and the chemists of the leading steel-works in the country. Let us first verify the correctness of the analyses before we consider the con clusions. I can enumerate a great number of instances in which chemists have differed very widely in their determinations of phos phorus and manganese. A prominent iron fitam made a contract with the Edgar Thomson Steel Company to deliver pig metal guar anteed to be between 0.07 and 0.08 phosphorus; an analysis by our chemist resulted in phosphorus 0.148 and 0.152,—a rather startling difference! Again, a sample bar of steel, in which our chemist reported phosphorus 0.11, was tested by a chemist of au other Bessemer works, ana his determinations were phosphorus between 0.07 and 0.08: A leading engineering establishmeut of Pittsbdrgh bought iron claimed by a chemical analysis to contain 0.08 phosphorus; our Mr. Ford found phosphorus 0.145. A chem ist connected with an open-hearth works reported manganese in a piece of steel, 1.14; in a second determination from the same piece of steel, by the same chemist, manganese was reported 0.43. It is well known that for equal weights of material, thin sections of the lighter structural alloys are more resistant to buckling under a compressive stress than thin sections of more dense material. Therefore, structural parts having the same resistance to buckling stresses are generally lightest when they are made of magnesium alloys. Consequently, there is considerable interest in the development of strong alloys having densities equal to or lower than that of magnesium and strength-weight ratios equivalent to those of the strongest aluminum alloys. The development of commercial magnesium-base alloys has been very successful, and their importance among materials in the structural field has been amply demonstrated. However, an even wider structural application of magnesium alloys might be effected if improvements could be made in the cold rollability and cold-forming characteristics. Such improvements, along with production of less directionality in properties. could be effected if the hexagonal close-packed lattice of present alloys could be replaced with a cubic lattice. In 1942, a project, having as its objective the improvement of some of the characteristics of commercial magnesium-base alloys, was initiated at Battelle Memorial Institute under the sponsorship of the Mathieson Chemical Corporation. At that time, one of the authors,* then Chief Metallurgist for the Mathieson Chemical Corporation, postulated that the addition of lithium to magnesium in sufficient quantities to change the crystal structure of the resultant alloy from a hexagonal to a body-centered cubic lattice should produce a magnesium-rich alloy which would have the desired improvements in cold-working characteristics with less directionality in properties. To test this view, a series of alloys was made and was found to have many of the attributes that were predicted. The view that magnesium-lithium alloys were of structural interest was also held by others. In 1943 and 1945, Dean and Andersonl,² obtained patents on magnesium-base alloys containing from about 1 to 10 pct lithium, from about 2 to about 10 pct manganese, and the balance substantially all magnesium; and on magnesium-base alloys containing from about 1 pct to about 10 pct lithium, from about 2 to about 10 pct manganese, from about 0.5 to 2 pct silver, and the balance substantially all magnesium. They noted that an alloy containing 83 pct magnesium, 10 pct manganese, 5 pct lithium, and 2 pct silver could be cold rolled by any of the usual methods and that this alloy was considerably harder and stronger than most other magnesium-base alloys heretofore available. In 1945, Hume-Rothery, et al.,3 predicted that magnesium-lithium base alloys should be soft and ductile and that such compositions, to which was added a third element for the purpose of producing a precipitation-hardening type of alloy, should be ductile, strong, and lighter than magnesium itself. Hume-Rothery investigated the binary magnesium-lithium and ternary magnesium-lithium-silver equilibrium relations and criticized the existing equilibrium diagrams. The binary magnesium-lithium equilibrium diagram has also been investigated by Grube, Von Zeppelin, and Bumm, Henry and Cordiano, Sal'dau and Shamrai, Hof-mann,' and Shamrai.8 The work of most investigators agreed with that of Grube, whose constitution diagram is shown in Fig 1. From the standpoint of development of structural alloys, the room-temperature equilibrium relations are of great interest. An examination of Fig 1 reveals that, from 0 to 5.7 pct lithium, the existing phase is alpha, which is a solution of lithium in hexagonal magnesium. The boundary between the alpha, and alpha plus beta regions, occurs at a Mg/Li of 16.5, corresponding to 5.7 pct lithium by weight. Between 5.7 pct and 10.3 pct lithium, there exists a mixture of the alpha phase (lithium dissolved in hexagonal magnesium) and the beta phase (magnesium dissolved in body-centered-cubic lithium). The boundary of the alpha plus beta and beta regions occurs at a Mg/Li of 8.7, corresponding to a lithium composition of 10.3 pct. Much of the work described here was directed toward obtaining an alloy made up of a large proportion, or entirely, of the body-centered-cubic beta structure. In his early work, Loonam found that specimens of lithium-bearing alloys were very malleable. Ingots of alloys prepared at that time were extruded to 3/8-in. diam bars, and the mechanical properties and the effects of heat treatment were then determined. These data are given in Table 1. The outstanding ductility of the alloys, combined with their moderately high strength, evoked considerable interest.

The principal event in the development of oil and gas in Missouri in 1942 was the drilling of the Cities Service Oil Company's No. I Jim Cook, in the northwest corner, NW. 1/4 sec. 32, T. 65 N., R. 39 W., Atchison County, in the northwest corner of Missouri. This well, not yet completed, bailed several barrels of free oil in about 27° Baume from a sand called the Bartlesville by those in charge, at a depth of 1450 ft. The well is on a block of leases obtained after the area, which is covered by several hundred feet of glacial drift, had been prospected by core drilling. Earlier in the year the same company drilled a well on the Glen Gray farm in the southwest corner, SW. 1/4 sec. 29, T. 65 N., R. 39 w., to a depth of 2427 ft. in the Hunton lime with a rotary drill. Oil stains in this hole led to the drilling of the second well. The total footage drilled was 24,7541/2 ft., of which 14,0281/2 was by cable tools and 10,726 ft. by rotary. Twelve of the dry holes were drilled into Mississip-pian or older beds. Table I gives a summary of activities by counties.
