THE first to appreciate and foresee the value of applying electrical measurements to structural studies was Prof. Conrad Schlumberger, Professor of Physics at the School of Mines in Paris. One of his earliest practical undertakings in this line was carried out, in the field, at Fierville-la-Campagne, Normandy, in 1912. His book, published in 1920,1 still stands as an authoritative, fundamental treatise on the use of the electric current in geological studies, in spite of the rapid evolution of geophysics during the last seven years. A remarkable feature of this book is that, even then, it stressed the role of electricity in structural investigations and made public the first successful results obtained therewith. Stratigraphic studies have been pursued continuously by Conrad Schlumberger and his associates since 1912, the only interruption being the World War. The results attained demonstrate the wide possibilities of electrical exploration in structural work. This field of activity is, at the least, as varied and valuable as the search for ore. It is curious that until very recently it has so slightly attracted the attention of geophysicists and geologists on this continent. The purpose of this paper is to present briefly some examples of the practical application of the potential methods to geological studies. These examples are chosen from a number of problems solved in the field by our firm, in the course of its consulting practice. Certain fundamental points are briefly stated before the field operations and interpretations are described.

By comparing two longwall operations, one begun in 1956 and the other in 1960, the author is able to demonstrate the increases in production and performance made possible by longwall mining. These achievements have been brought about by continuous development of longwall mining equipment and associated roof supports. Because of this progress, longwall mining is able to provide, under proper conditions, high production per man-shift, remarkable cost savings, dependable roof control, safe working conditions and truly continuous production. It may seem odd that the title of this paper is not simply "Longwall Mining" but instead "Progress in Longwall Mining." However, the word "Progress" definitely has its place in longwall mining. If it had not been for progress in the development of longwall mining equipment and roof supports, the longwall mining method would not be able to compete in production and performance with modem coal mining machines. The longwall mining method was practiced at the beginning of the century and there were several successful operations in coal fields in Illinois. In those early days of longwall mining, the coal was undercut by hand 2 to 2.5 ft at the bottom of the seam and packwalls were built in the gob to support the roof. The roof eventually subsided and the weight of the subsiding roof was used to ride the face and break the undercut coal. Utilizing natural weight to soften the coal face is still practiced in modern longwall mining; however, the packwalling method has been replaced by the caving method and the roof is now supported by yielding steel roof supports and forepoling steel headers. The purpose of these yielding-type roof supports is to provide a safe working area for the crew along the entire longwall face, to permit continuous mechanical mining across the prop free face, and to provide a strong resistance for the roof by forming an even breaking line at the gob for the roof to cave. Roof supports and associated forepoling headers should be kept as close as possible to the face in order to prevent a caving between face and supports, especially under friable roof. This means that the coal should be extracted in small slices, allowing only a narrow roof area to be exposed and unsupported. The coal planer with its relatively high cutting velocity of 75 ft per min provides such an extraction of coal and has proved its high performance under difficult mining conditions. Since 1951, several longwall faces in southem West Virginia and Pennsylvania which have been equipped with the coal planer and friction-type manual roof supports have been successfully operated. Compared to today's longwall mining, these longwall faces required such a large crew, primarily to handle the roof supports, that the actual high production per shift was charged with too high a labor cost, thereby decreasing the tons per man. Yet, even then the longwall faces outperformed the conventional mining system under the same conditions. In order to demonstrate the progress that has been made in the development of longwall mining, a comparison will be made between a longwall face in Arkansas which was installed in 1956 and a modemized longwall face started in 1960 in southern West Virginia. LONGWALL MINING IN 1956 The 320-ft longwall face was developed in a 32-in. thick coal seam near Greenwood, Ark. The method of mining the 320-ft coal block was the advancing system in which three entries on either side of the face were driven ahead of the advancing longwall face. The face was equipped with a coal planer and a Panzer conveyor; timbering was done with wooden timbers and cribs. The roof supports were set without any pattern. The crew to operate the planer and to handle the roof supports (timbers and cribs) consisted of 15 men per shift. During a period of approximately eight monthsof single shift operating time, the average tonnage produced in this relatively low seam amounted to about 263 tons of clean coal per shift. To show the development in the coal plow from then until now, it should be pointed out that the standard plow was used in this operation. The plow was equipped with rigid bottom bits which could not be adjusted if the plow started to climb, thereby leaving bottom coal to be recovered by pick hammers end causing delays in production. Single-crystal thin films of molybdenum have been grown. by the pyrolytic decomposition of molybdenum hexafluoride in a hydrogen ambient on various insulating substrates at temperatures front 650° to 900° C. Single-crystal discs of various orientations of magnesium aluminate spinel, a aluminum oxide, magnesium oxide, and the natural facets of beryllium oxide were all observed to exert epitaxial control on the depositing film. Determinations of the crystallographic relationships existing between film and substrates have been made, using X-ray diffraction three-circle goniometry and Laue back-reflection techniques. Using these data, crystallographic overlays have been constructed which suggest a possible interfacial geometry on the basis of a match between metal deposit atoms and metal ion sites in the substrate. A continuing program has been in effect in the Auto-netics Laboratories over the past several years aimed at the development of electronic materials in new and useful forms using chemical vapor deposition techniques. During the course of these investigations, the epitaxy of silicon1"5 and tungstenep7 on single-crystal metal oxide insulators was studied extensively. The deposition of molybdenum is a logical extension of the tungsten work since the crystal structure is identical and the lattice dimensions differ by less than 1 pct. The pyrolytic decomposition of molybdenum hexafluoride in hydrogen was used to grow molybdenum films on the oxide substrates AlzOs, MgA1~04, MgO, and Be0 at from 650" to 900°C, depending on the substrate material. Under the experimental conditions to be described, monocrystalline films of controlled orientation were obtained. The materials investigated and their crystal structure are listed in Table I. EXPERIMENTAL The molybdenum depositions were effected by the hydrogen reduction of molybdenum hexafluoride (MoFe) in a flowing system of hydrogen at atmospheric pressure. The schematic of the apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. The hydrogen, purified by passage through a heated palladium thimble, was mixed with the vapor of the liquid MoFe maintained in a steel bottle at room temperature (25°C). The term "differential flotation" is used to denote a flotation operation in which separation is effected between two or more minerals of the same class; e. g., lead sulfide from zinc sulfide, pyrite from blende, chalco-pyrite from pyrite, chalcopyrite from blende. At present, so far as published work shows, there seem to be two theories as to the mechanics of differential flotation. The earlier and more generally accepted theory is that the so-called depressing agents alter the surface of one or more of the sulfides in the ore, either by chemical action or adsorption, so that it is no longer amenable to flotation, but that these depressed sulfides can be revived, after the unaffected sulfide has been floated, by reagents which react chemically with the altered surface and make it amenable to flotation. More recently, Professor Taggartl has advanced the theory that slime adsorption is an important factor in differential flotation. He believes that, with the proper use of a class of agents, which he calls dispersion agents and which include practically all the depressing agents, one can cause the slime to adsorb differentially on sulfide surfaces. A gangue-slime coated sulfide surface will act as a gangue particle and will not float. If, subsequently, an agent that will remove the gangue-slime coating is added, the sulfide again assumes its original surface and can be floated as an ordinary sulfide. This is the basis of the slime theory of differential flotation. Timber Butte mill at Butte, Mont., is a typical lead-zinc flotation concentrator. Neihart ore, chosen for investigation in this work, is one of the custom ores treated at that mill. Practice at Timber Butte mill in February, 1928, was as follows: A combined lead-zinc concentrate was first made using 0.2 Ib. per ton on the ore of potassium xanthate and 0.03 lb. per ton of Cleveland Cliffs oil after 1.5 lb. per ton of lime and 1 lb. per ton of calcium chloride has been added just before the ball mill. The concentrate was then thickened to 70 per cent. solids. Potassium cyanide to the amount of 0.3 lb. per ton and zinc sulfate in the quantity of 0.5 Ib. per ton were added to the thickened pulp and the whole

R. H. Sweetser.—Mr. Reinartz spoke of slag containing 18 per cent FeO. I think he expressed the iron as oxide. I should like to ask at what point, in iron contents, it is usual practice to quit sending that open-hearth slag to the blast furnace? L. F. Reinartz.—NO problem is involved in disposing of open-hearth slag to our blast furnaces because, on account of the grades of iron and steel made by our company, the iron oxide in the slag is sufficiently high to make it very acceptable to the blast-furnace operator. I have been told that if the total iron oxide in the slag is under 18 to 20 per cent, it is not economical to use such slag in a blast furnace. J. T. Mackenzie,* Birmingham, A1a.—Mr. Reinartz mentioned sulfate in the limestone. I wonder if he did not use the wrong word. We always have assumed that the sulfate sulfur is practically harmless. Most limestone carries some pyrite (sulfide sulfur) which we thought was what gave the sulfur pick-up. L. F. Reinartz.—I have had no experience, personally, in the use of limestone high in sulfates. I have been told, on several occasions, by other open-hearth men, that the sulfates will be reduced and increase the sulfur content of the metal. We have never found any pyrite in our limestone. A. Hayes,† Middletown, Ohio.—I should think that sulfates would be readily reducible to sulfites, and possibly to sulfides at various distances through the slag layer, from the top down to the interface between the bath and the slag, because reducing conditions are certainly sufficiently strong next to the bath in the slag to reduce sulfates to sulfides. A. L. Feild,‡ Baltimore, Md.—What is Mr. Reinartz's theory as to the effect of silica in the slag on the iron oxide content of the metal? L. F. Reinartz.—I have no particular theory as to the effect of silica in the slag on the iron oxide content of the metal. I know from practical experience that it does have an influence on reduction of iron oxide in the metal. We know that if the silicon content of the charge, and, therefore, the silica of the slag is increased, the iron oxide in the slag will be decreased. Based on Dr. Herty's work, we assume that the iron oxide is correspondingly decreased in the metal. C. H. Commercially, celestite (SrSO4) is the predominant strontium mineral. Among other strontium-bearing minerals, only strontianite (SrCO3) occurs commonly; however, it is rarely an item of commerce. Production of celestite is principally in Mexico, Spain, and Turkey. An attempt to produce celestite in Canada was unsuccessful. The United States, which is wholly dependent on imports, chiefly from Mexico (99%), is the largest consumer of strontium. Lesser quantities are consumed in Japan and Europe. The Federal Republic of Germany is the principal source of strontium compounds imported to the US. Uses The principal uses of strontium are for the manufacture of strontium carbonate and nitrate. Carbonate is used in glass for TV tube face plates and in ceramic ferrites for magnets. Nitrate is used in pyrotechnics, mainly in safety flares, to which it imparts a characteristic brilliant red color. Minor amounts of strontium compounds are used in electrolytic zinc manufacturing where the carbonate is used to remove unwanted lead. Small quantities are consumed in greases, ceramics, soaps, alloys, and pharmaceuticals. Specifications Typical celestite specifications for the carbonate and nitrate markets are shown in Table 1. Specifications of manufactured carbonate, sold in two grades, one to the glass industry and the other for ceramic ferrites, are shown in Table 2. Both grades of carbonate are shipped in palletized 50-lb bags. Glass grade material is shipped in bulk by rail. [ ] Manufacturing Processes The following description is adapted from Anon. (1980) . The manufacturing process for strontium carbonate and strontium nitrate chemicals is conceptually simple. Strontium nitrate is made from strontium carbonate in two additional steps. The production process begins with celestite, the natural form of strontium sulfate. In the first step the ore is crushed, ground, and mixed with coke. This mixture is then fed into a kiln where the ore is reduced at high temperatures to strontium sulfide; the coke is added to the ore as a source of energy and carbon. The literature of geophysics as applied to the discovery of mineral deposits has been very extensive during the past few years,' but there seem to be few references to the use of the method of least squares for obtaining better interpretations of the observed data.2 There seems to be a general reluctance among geologists and engineers to acquire the technique of least squares, in spite of the fact that a thorough knowledge of the theory is not necessary for the use of the method.

THE first commercial production of bituminous coal in the United States was in 1820, and formation of acid in the areas from which the coal was removed began at that time. Thus it is 130 years since the development of mine acid began. The coal operator has had to deal with the acid water produced in his mines, and his losses from corrosion of pumps and equipment have been tremendous. Other industries and the public have been forced to spend large amounts for their water requirements because of the acid discharge from the mines. There are many contradictions in the literature on this subject probably because of variations in the analytical procedures followed and differences in the methods of calculation and reporting. The opinions previously expressed may be summarized as follows: The production of mine acid has been looked upon as a simple chemical reaction wherein the oxygen of the air has reacted with pyrite to produce ferrous sulphate and free sulphuric acid. This reaction appears in many chemistry texts and generally has not been considered worthy of further study. Since the measurement of hydrogen ion concentration or activity was developed and expressed in terms of pH, indicator and instrumental methods for pH determination have become readily available, making it natural to think of it as a measure of acid content. Special purpose analytical methods applicable to potable waters, sewage effluents, and boiler waters, based in general upon the determination of what may be regarded as impurities, have been applied to more concentrated solutions constituting mine discharges, without reference to the fact that these specialized procedures had been developed to serve as operating guides for water-treatment plants. Increased flow was thought to result in a dilution of the acid produced. When the Sanitary Water Board of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania established a fellowship at Mellon Institute, the first approach to the problem was to review some of the chemical reactions involved and their relation to acid production. Since the sulphates of iron were among the principal constituents of coal-mine drainage, the first studies were based upon solutions of chemically pure ferrous and ferric sulphate. These are both neutral salts, that is, the iron and the sulphate are equivalent, but they produce acid reactions in water solution because as salts of strong acids with weak bases, they hydrolyze to form acid solutions. Alcohol floods of consolidated sandstone cores have shown the process to be strongly dependent on the phase behavior of the particular alcobol-oil-water system used. This means that in many cases the mechanism does not conform to the idea of a piston-like displacement. Instead, it is found that by changing the alcohol it is possible to change the relative velocities of the oil and water and, in fact, the entire mechanism of the process. The effects of rate, viscosity, initial saturation, distance travelled and hysteresis of relative permeability on the alcohol flooding mechanism are discussed. INTRODUCTION Reasons for interest in the use of alcohol to miscibly displace oil and water from a porous medium appear in the existing literature.l-7 The mechanism of the displacement has been considered and the apparent implications formulated into a theory which presumably would enable one to predict the essential features of the process.6 Unfortunately, most of the reported experiments have been performed with unconsolidated or artificially consolidated sands. With these systems some of the noteworthy facets of the process are obscured and resulting data appear uncertain. It is the purpose of this paper to show how the use of consolidated sandstones has led to revision of the mechanism and, hence, the theory of alcohol flooding. The practical result is increased pessimism toward the possibilities of commercial application of the simplest form of the alcohol-slug process. However, elucidation of the mechanism has made it possible to define the essential characteristics of a system of slugs which will behave in a nearly piston-like fashion and, thus, yield the best possible result. EQUILIBRIUM PHASE BEHAVIOR Fig. 1 is a diagram of the ternary system isopropyl alcohol (IPA)-Soltrol-calcium chloride brine. Brine was used to prevent plugging of the core and calcium chloride was used because sodium-chloride brine exhibits a solid phase with Soltrol and IPA. If alcohol is added in increments to the immiscible mixture of water and oil represented by Point A, the path followed by the successively equilibrated samples will be on the Line ABC and pass from the immiscible region to the miscible region by crossing the binodal curve at B. Consider the intersection D of this path with the tie Line EF. The quantity of oleic phase is proportional to the Segment ED and the quantity of the aqueous phase is proportional to DF. Compositions of the two phases are specified by Points E and F. It is clear that in the case shown the oleic phase is diminishing and entirely disappears when miscibility is achieved. Such will

The results of potential measurements between 1) a titaniurn electrode in NaCl-TiCl, melts and a graphite-cizlorine reference electrode and 2) a titanium electrode in NaC1-Nu "melts and a graphite-chlorine reference electrode show that the following relationship expresses the equilibrium relationship between the TiCl, and the dissolved metallic sodium concentrations, expressed in mole fraction units, in dilute NaCl welts at 850°C. The results of potential measurenments between a graphite electrode in NaCl-TiCl, melts that were saturated with TiCl, and a graphite-chlorine reference electrode, when combined with the standard free energy data given in literature, gave the following expression for the equilibrium relationship between the TiCl, and TiCl, concentrations, expressed in mole fraction units, in dilute NaCl melts at 850°C. These relationships are for melts in equilibrium with pure titanium. In impure systems, less sodiurn and more TiCI, can be copresent with a given concentration of TiCl,. AFTER 10 years of existence, the titanium metal industry still relies on the original Kroll and the sodium reduction processes for the only important means of converting titanium-bearing ores to titanium metal via production of titanium tetrachloride as an intermediate. Through years of modification and development these two processes have evolved to a point where any further major economic advances in the field of titanium metal production must be achieved through implementation of processes which are distinct departures from simple magnesium or sodium reduction of titanium tetrachloride. Concurrently with the refinement of the Kroll and sodium reduction processes, industries and government have sponsored research and development in the field of producing titanium by electrolysis of oxides,' carbides,' and halides3'4 in fused salt media. However, the incomplete understanding of the physical chemistry of fused salt systems has in many cases hindered the development of promising new titanium production processes to the point where they will have a clear advantage over the processes presently employed. Fortunately the volume of information on fused salt physical and electrochemistry is increasing at an accelerating pace. The first approaches tbward investigating the electrochemical behavior of fused salt systems have been the measurements of equilibrium potentials of metals immersed in melts containing their halides.' Some work on the kinetics of fused salt electrochemical processes has been reported.'09" Some descriptions of the structural composition of fused salt systems are also available. The work described herein is a continuation of the study of metal electrode potentials in fused salts. Specifically, this contribution to the growing store of fused salt chemistry information presents a description of the equilibrium relationships between the concentrations of titanium dichloride, titanium trichloride, and metallic sodium in fused sodium chloride. The investigation of the titanium dichloride-titanium trichloride equilibrium relationships is not completely new. Kellog and Krye and Melgren and opie15 have presented the results of chemical analysis of salts containing titanium chlorides. Flengas and lngrahaml' have published the results of an investigation of these equilibrium relationships obtained by measurement of electrode potentials in a fused NaCl-KC1 mixture. The investigation described herein differed from that of Flengas and Ingraham principally in the use of straight NaCl as the solvent in place of the more costly and more difficult to purify mixture. This investigation was conducted in three parts. First, the equilibrium potentials of titanium in sodium chloride containing known concentrations of titanium dichloride were measured. A graphite-chlorine electrode was employed as reference. Second, the equilibrium potentials of titanium immersed in sodium chloride containing known concentrations of elemental sodium were measured. Third, the equilibrium potentials of graphite immersed in titanium tetrachloride-saturated sodium chloride containing known concentrations of titanium trichloride were measured. The results of these three related investigations are presented in the above order. West Texas and New Mexico have been overshadowed by the dcvelopment in East Texas to such an extent that the area has been placed on a settled production basis by most of the operators. Considerable develop-mCnt work on both proven and unproven acreage remains to be carried 011, but the incentive, a ready and profitable market, has been lacking. The main characteristics of the fields in this area are so well known that they are not described again in this paper, which thus resolves itself into a statistical review of the more important production features of the area. Proration has been in effect during the year and has been rigorously applied with the full cooperation of all producers. Proration in West Texas and New Mexico is based in the more productive fields on a potential and acreage distribution of the allowance to the individual wells or acreage units. Potentials are determined generally by a short production test of from 1 to 4 hr.; and the hourly rate is multiplied by 24 to obtain the 24-hr. production or rated potential of the separate wells. The potential values thus set up have been questioned by many production men who are not willing to concede that the instantaneous (hourly) capacity of a well to produce is its potential capacity for a day with all other wells in the pool producing at their capacity. However, the potential of a well determined as above remains its chief rating as a measure of the permeability in place and as an indication of the possible reserve feeding that well. The acreage factor has made it unnecessary to overdevelop properties in order to obtain an allowance proportionate to neighbors who are willing to drill an excessive number of wells on a piece of acreage in the hopes of a quick drainage and a corresponding profit. Proration has resulted in an orderly development of many of the pools in this area on the base as outlined above, resulting in more reasonable spacing of wells and the more even withdrawal of oil and the ensuing expectation of high recoveries. The McDermitt mine was found as a separate mercury ore-bearing occurrence approximately 305 m (1000 ft) northeasterly and in a different geologic setting from the old Cordero mine, which had been the district's major producer. The following briefly describes the discovery of the new deposit and the Placer Amex lnc. involvement. The Cordero mining property was under lease by Sierra Mineral Management from the owner Fred H. Lenway in February 1971, when the property was brought to the attention of Placer Amex Inc. (known at that time as American Exploration and Mining Co.) by Richard F. Hewlett of Sierra Mineral Management. The property was first examined by Amex geologists in the spring of 1971, who reported favorably on the project. During that year, Sierra Minerals Management had retained Dr. Larry Walters as a consultant. He proceeded to drill test mercury soils anomalies which he had found northeast of the old Cordero mine in an area overlain by recent alluvium and gravel. An area known as the D area was subsequently blocked out and ascribed a tonnage of about 18 1 kt (200,000 st) which occurs in the vicinity of the eastern edge of the currently defined McDermitt ore body. This mineralization was found in flat lying mercury-bearing lakebeds, unlike the steep structurally controlled ore which was mined in the old Cordero mine. It became apparent to Placer Amex that since the chances of much more extensive ore were good in such a geologic environment, additional exploration was warranted. A joint venture was formed in October 1972 by American Exploration and Mining Co. and Sierra Mineral Management to further explore the Cordero property. The project exploration was fully funded and managed by Amex. Sampling began by Placer Amex in the D area where an open trench had exposed the lakebed ore. Visible cinnabar could not account for the high-grade mercury assays taken from the trench, and an unknown mercury mineral was suspected. Subsequent work established the presence of a chlorine-bearing mercury sulfide which may have enriched the lakebeds as a secondary supergene mineral. Early identification of the mercury-bearing mineral corderoite (Hg3Cl2S,) aided in the geologic concepts for the ore occurrence and was helpful in exploring for the expansion of the D area. Corderoite was found occurring with cinnabar in the lakebeds, and in places it is a major contributor. Specimens of the unique ore were given to Dr. Eugene E. Foord and Dr. Pieter Berendsen at Stanford University, who subsequently identified the chemical and crystallographic makeup of the new mineral and described it for the first time as a naturally occurring substance. Metallurgical work on mercury recovery from the newly described mineral was carried out by the Placer Development Ltd. laboratories in Vancouver, and an acceptable recovery system was worked out together with a planned mill design. Step out drilling from the D area by Placer Amex Inc. encountered extensive flat lying lakebed ore. The McDermitt ore body, as subsequently defined by drilling, was found to contain 2.7 Mt (3 million st) of open pittable ore, containing approximately 5 kg/t (10 lb per st) Hg. The ore body gently dips to the north and is found lying mainly in claybeds just above an opalite breccia blanket which overlies the earlier volcanics. Some ore is also found in the opalite breccia. The mine and mill were constructed under an operating joint venture with Placer Amex Inc. and Sterling Mineral Ventures, and production began in June 1975 at the rate of 20,000 flasks per year. The mine is currently in progress.

In this year's review, the concept of solution mining has been expanded to include total solution as well as the technology of leaching, or partial solution methods. Leaching methods continue to make strides in the processing of metallic minerals, particularly in copper and uranium production. No quantitative data are available on the increase of leach operations; however, it is known that there were more systems installed in 1969 and that the estimated 15% of U.S. domestic production of copper produced in 1968 was by leach methods.1 While the number of publications appearing during the year were few,2,3 there were special sessions in this field at the AIME Annual Meeting and SME Fall Meeting in 1969 and more scheduled for these meetings in 1970. Significant areas that should be mentioned are: the continuing interest in bacteria to convert sulfide sulfur to acid thus reducing reagent costs in both copper and uranium sulfide ores, the exploration of leaching agents other than common mineral acids or alkaline solutions,4,5 kinetic studies of leach mechanisms and the development of microfractures for increased leach solution penetration by use of chemical or atomic explosives.6,7

Energy conservation has been the keyword in many plant expansions. Far many years, most of the phosphate industry has been dry grinding their phosphate rock. Agrico Chemical in Florida has recently been evaluating the wet grinding of phosphate rock, a process which eliminates a pre-dry stage for mill feed while allowing higher through- puts. This same company also plans to open a new phosphate facility in Louisiana that will use wet grinding in both ball mills. The Eveleth Expansion Co.'s Fairlane concentrator will have the largest rod and ball mills in the US mining industry. The plant will consist of three lines, each with one rod mill and one ball mill, and will process 464 ltph. The rod mills will be 15 x 20% ft, drawing 2035 hp. The ball mills will be 17 x 41½ ft, drawing 6900 hp and driven by dual 3000- hp motors. The plant is scheduled for startup in the fall of 1976.

Aluminum is the most abundant metallic element and forms 8% of the earth's crust. Because of its chemical activity it does not occur in nature in a metallic form but principally in the silicates, feldspar, mica, shale, and clay. Bauxitic raw materials-bauxitic clay, aluminous laterite, and bauxite-develop from these aluminum silicate sources. Bauxite and aluminous laterite are naturally occurring mixtures of aluminum hydroxides and mineral impurities, and they are the major sources of aluminum. End Uses Bauxite is the basic ore of the aluminum industry. It is refined into aluminum hydroxide and calcined for feed stock to electrolytic smelters. Over 90% of the tonnage mined is refined and smelted into aluminum. The total tonnage consumed by other industries is small in comparison, but bauxite and alumina are important for the manufacture of refractories, ceramics, chemicals, abrasives, pharmaceuticals, catalysts, cements, dessicants, and flame retardants. Some aluminum-containing industrial products are made from clays and other materials but the majority originate from bauxite directly or from aluminum hydroxide and alumina refined from bauxite. Lateritic type bauxite is also used as building and decorative stone. Geology Mineralogy and Properties Bauxite is a mineral raw material composed principally of one or more aluminum hydroxide minerals and impurities of silica, iron oxide, titania, and other elements in minor or trace amounts. The important aluminum hydroxide minerals are gibbsite, boehmite, and diaspore. Bayerite, nordstrandite, and tucanite are naturally occurring aluminum hydroxides but are rare and not commercially important. Mixtures of gibbsite and boehmite are common, boehmite and diaspore less common, and gibbsite and diaspore rare. Gibbsite is aluminum trihydroxide. Boehmite and diaspore are aluminum oxide hydroxides and have essentially the same composition, but diaspore has a greater hardness and a more tightly bonded and denser atomic structure. Although not technically correct, the commercial terms trihydrate and monohydrate are frequently used to distinguish types of bauxite. If bauxite is all or nearly all gibbsite, it is referred to as a trihydrate ore; if boehmite or diaspore or a mixture of both are the dominant minerals, the bauxite is called a monohydrate ore. If substantial amounts of both gibbsite and boehmite are present, the bauxite is frequently referred to as a mixed ore. Properties of major bauxite minerals are shown in Table 1. Silica, iron oxides, and titania are major impurities always present in deposits of bauxitic raw materials.. Silica impurities usually occur as clay minerals, micaceous minerals, or quartz, but cristobalite and feldspar are found in some deposits. The most common clay minerals are kaolins; however, illites and chlorites are often found in small quantities. Varying proportions of aluminum, iron, and clay minerals make bauxite, aluminous laterite, ferruginous laterite, and bauxitic clay deposits gradational with each other. Hematite and goethite are the common iron mineral impurities in many bauxites. Magnetite and ilmenite occur in deposits derived from basic igneous rocks. Triaxial compression tests have been performed to determine the strength characteristics of limestone, sand-stone and shale rocks subjected to controlled stress conditions. This control tuns exercised by varying the liquid pressures within and around a plastic-encased rock specimen. The pressure in the pores of the rock was varied throughout the range from atmospheric to 15,000 psig; the external pressure was changed over the same range with various positive pressure differences between is and the intertnal pressure. The data show that the rock strength increased and the mode of failure changed as the pressuire. surrounding the rock became greater than the pressure in the pores of the rock. These observations and the resu1ts of microbit drilling experiments indicate that the increased rock strength under pressure may bc an important effect in reducing drilling rare, but that other factors are probably of even greater importance. INTRODUCTION A large part of the research conductcd to reducc thc cost of drilling is directed toward improving present drilling technology and dcveloping new drilling methods. In spite of the fact that drilling is essentiaIly the act of making rocks fail, many details of the mechanism of failure are not known. It seems probable, therefore, that continuing studies of the fundamentals of rock failure can lay a foundation for future improvements in drilling technology. One of the factors which affects rock failure is the stress applied to the rock. This effect has been known for many years.'.'.; As an example, stress studics have been published by engineers' concerned with the strength characteristics of concrete in large dams. More recently, a number of investigators4-12 have explored the effects of stress on the strength of geologic formations and the geologic implications of their findings. During the last few years some research'" on rock strengths has also been conductcd in an attempt to gain additional insight into the factors which affeet rock drillability. In detcrmining the strength characteristics of rocks under different stress conditions, investigators have conventionally used triaxial compression equipment. wherein a jacketed rock cylinder is uniformly loaded from all directions and then compressed longitudinally. The results of this work have demonstrated that the mode of failure (brittle or malleable) is dependent upon the loading pressure, and that the strength of the rock increases as the loading pressure increases. These results clearly manifest that the stress, which is determined by the loading pressure, affects rock strength, and this implies that rocks under stress should be stronger and hence harder to drill. During the drilling of a porous rock the stress conditions are determined not only by the pressure surrounding the portion of the rock undergoing failure (confining pressure) but also by the pressure of the interstitial fluids within the rock (pore pressure). The importancc of both these pressures on the drilling rate of rocks has already been demonstrated by a number of investigators. Murray and Cunningham" found in microbit drilling expcriments that at constant pore pressures the drilling ratc decreased as the hydrostatic pressure surrounding an unjacketed, impermeable rock increased. Later Eckel" found that for jacketed Iimestone specimens the differcnce between hydrostatic (wellbore) pressure and formation (pore) pressure had an important effect on drilling rate. These observations of the effect of pressure on drilling rate emphasize that for drilling studies triaxial compression tests should be conducted under conditions of confining and pore pressure which simulate conditions underground. In the past, triaxial tests have been made under conditions which do not reproduce those underground. In particular, most of the tests on porous materials have keen made at varying confining pressures but with atmospheric pore pressures. In only one group of tests' was any data on the effect of pore pressurc reported, and these few data were on materials not representiltive of those encountered in drilling earth formations. The research described herein was initiated to deter-mine the importance of both internal pore pressure and confining pressure on failure characteristics of limestone. sandstone and shales. Triaxial loading equipment was used to obtain strength data at pressures up to 15,000 psig. An additional objective of this research was to apply these results to drilling rate studies by comparing them with the previously published drilling data of Murray and Cunningham" and of Eckel12. The work reported here is but one step in determining and evaluating the fundamental mechanisms which control drilling rate. Additional research is needed to clarify other aspects of the drilling process. The better

Equations for predicting the performance of vacuum filters and centrifuges used for coal dewatering are presented. These equations are the basis for a dewatering module which has recently been added to the Coal Preparation Plant Simulator developed at the University of Pittsburgh under the sponsorship of the Department of Energy. The module provides for mechanical degradation in the centrifuge; loss of fines to centrate or filtrate; changes in size and gravity distribution; changes in ash and sulfur content; as well as final moisture content of the dewatered product. Inputs to the module are the flow rate of the coal to be dewatered, a washability analysis of the coal, and parameters describing the operation of the vacuum filter or centrifuge. Typical results obtained using the module are presented. There are adjustable parameters which can be varied to match plant operation or experimental data if desired.
