In the brief period from November 1936 to September 1937, the Wilmington oil field developed far beyond all expectations. Decline in some wells appears very rapid, but it is too early to draw definite conclusions, as the majority of wells are maintaining very large and steady output. Heavy curtailment in the central area, which has developed the largest wells, makes it impossible to arrive at a satisfactory estimate of decline. The field is producing oil from the Repetto (lower Pliocene) and Puente (upper Miocene) formations, which are of the same age as formations producing at Torrance, El Segundo, del Rey or the marginal fields of the Los Angeles Basin. All of these fields are underlain by schist. The Long Beach field, northeast of Wilmington, is productive throughout 3000 ft. of Repetto-Pliocene series and also approximately 3000 ft. of Miocene formations, whereas at Wilmington only 700 to 800 ft. of Repetto and 2500 ft. of Miocene formations contain oil and gas. This paper gives a brief summary of the history and development of the field to Sept. 15, 1937, showing the subsurface conditions as they exist with the field only partly developed. History of Development The Wilmington oil field, 20 miles due south of Los Angeles, adjacent to Los Angeles harbor and about midway between the cities of San Pedro and Long Beach (Fig. 7), was producing oil as early as 1932 and only came into prominence as a major oil field of Southern California in the fall of 1936, when the General Petroleum Corporation of California completed Terminal well No. 1 from the upper Miocene, at a depth of 3625 ft., for a daily production of 1500 bbl., 20" gravity A.P.I., thereby establishing discovery of the Terminal zone. GOLD occurs in many mineral deposits in the rocks of the Canadian Shield. It is present in the ores of many base metals and a considerable quantity is recovered as a by-product from the production of copper at Noranda, of nickel and copper at Sudbury and of copper and zinc at. Flinflon. But the greater part of the gold production of Canada is from deposits in which gold is the only metal of value. No gold is obtained from placer deposits within the borders of the Canadian Shield. A brief review of the geological relations of some of the gold deposits of the Canadian Shield will be presented in an attempt to explain certain associations. Only those which are being worked for their gold content will be considered and descriptions will be conned to representative types of deposits, chiefly those of major importance; a few others, differ-ing in certain features from those of the older and larger mines, will be included in order to illustrate the general conditions in which gold occurs in these ancient rocks. Brief summaries will be given of the geological relations of the Beattie and Siscoe mines of northern Quebec, of the mines of the Porcupine and Kirkland Lake areas of northeastern Ontario and of the Howey, Central Patricia and Little Long Lac mines of northwest-ern Ontario. Genetic relations to igneous rocks of granitic composition, outcropping in the vicinity, have been assumed for many of these deposits. Undoubt-edly the ore minerals have been derived from igneous sources and, for some occurrences, there is evidence suggestive of genetic relationship between the ore bodies and neighbouring intrusive rocks. During the past few years, however,, many investigators have expressed doubt of the genetic relationship of certain ore bodies to igneous masses near which they occur. As will be seen from references in the following descriptions the importance of the structural conditions in localizing deposition has been realized. Use of the discretized batch-grinding model for the simulation of locked-cycle grinding tests from batch-grinding data is illustrated. The simulated results were compared with actual locked-cycle experimental data for the dry grinding of dolomite. To illustrate the utility of this simulation method, a number of relationships between operating and performance parameters were generated, including relations between batch grinding and the Bond test, the production rate and the circulating load, and the production rate and the product size. A large amount of testing is done each year in the mineral industry for use with grinding unit cperations, and much of the experimental test data is obtained by the tedious locked-cycle testing procedure. In addition to being experimentally complex and requiring large amounts of sample, the very nature of the locked-cycle experiment yields results that cannot readily be interpreted. The attempts that have been made to model comminution systems during the last few years may provide a better and simpler way to obtain and analyze grinding test data; these models involve elements of both fitting to "model equations" and deterministic representations.1-1 The traditional engineering design techniques for comminution systems have relied mainly upon large amounts of industrial operating data that have been correlated with locked-cycle grinding data.',' Bond's empirical mill-design procedure involving locked cycle testing remains the most generally available method to this day. The purpose of the present paper is to show how much more useful data can be obtained from a simple batch-grinding experiment that provides information which subsequently can be utilized with population balance models of the grinding process to simulate locked-cycle behavior. These simulation results can, of course, be used in Bond's general design scheme. However, the combination of batch-grinding tests and the population balance model allows many more conditions to be considered than do single laboratory tests under specific locked-cycle conditions. The use of these simulation techniques for prediction of locked-cycle behavior represents one of the first practical applications for the simulation method in comminution.

The stresses in the simplest structures are often those we find most difficult to analyze. The most complex condition in mine stresses is found in simple tunnels where the roof, the sides, and the floor are a monolith. The functions of the parts are like the parts themselves not distinct and spccialized, and the problems to be solved are like those in a metal structure with riveted joints or a redundancy of bars. This difficulty explains perhaps why the condition has not been treated. But just because it cannot be discussed in its entirety is no reason why it should be treated as an action of parts with spccialized functions as a roof beam with supports and a foundation. The problern cannot be ignored on the ground that it is not of sufficient importance to warrant careful consideration, because conditions of complete monolithism, of which the tunnel is the type, are found materially unchanged in room-and-pillar and in longwall work. This unity between roof, sides, and floor, which to the coal miner is a difficult conception, really deserves a scientific appellation, and perhaps holoid (from holos, whole, and eidos, form) will serve the purpose as well as any other. In a simple tunnel the roof, the sides, and the floor form integral parts of one and the same structure, and the distortion of one cannot be conceived without a consequent strain in the others. Thus when the roof of the tunnel droops by reason of its weight, the upper parts of the sides are drawn in becausc they are integrally connected with the roof and must approach each other whenever, by the sagging of the roof, the distance between any two points in it is diminished. (See Fig. 1.) Thc sides in their turn operate on the floor of the holoid structure, producing a tensile stress. The writer has always been impressed with the value of soap as a means of illustrating the action of mine stresses. With that idea in mind' a cake of naphtha soap measuring 43/8 by 2¼ by 19i in. was taken and a tunnel was made through it 13/4 in. long, 21/2 in. wide and 1¼ in. high. (See Fig. 2.) The Ashio copper-mine of the Furukawa Mining Co. is situated 18 miles from Nikko, and 109 miles north of Tokyo, near the center of Japan. The mine-waters are run over scrap-iron, whereby most of the copper is precipitated as cement-copper, leaving iron sulphate with some copper sulphate in solution. After using in the wet concentrating ore-dressing plant, the waste water contains clay and ore-slimes. The only avenue of disposal of this water is the Watarese river; but as this flows through valleys in which the water is used for irrigating the rice-crops, it is necessary to purify and clarify the water before discharge. The water amounts to from 600 to 700 cu. ft. (from 17 to 20 cu. m.) per minute, and averages about 0.00028 per cent. of copper, representing more than 18 tolls of copper per month. The water carries H2SO4, FeSO4, Fe2(SO4)3, CuSO, and other metallic sulphates in solution, and clay, ore-fines, slimes and basic iron sulphates as suspended matters. To purify and clarify the water, precipitation by milk of lime has been used, in three different ways, as follows: I. First Method, Copper not Recovered. LET us return and follow our first intention of discussing the art of melting. Since I have demonstrated to you how large works are made, you may have thought that the way to the small ones was also open to you, and you would not have been mistaken. But in order to avoid work and expense there are shorter and easier ways to be used, both because the things can be handled more easily and because it is not necessary to have so much regard for the forces of small materials. Therefore, wishing to make a distinction for you, I shall call this the small art of casting. Before speaking of this, I shall tell you of several methods of making powders for moulding. Then I shall also tell you of the methods of moulding in boxes and in frames, and how the said powders are to be prepared for casting either dry or green. Then I shall tell you some methods that are held as secret by the masters for handling the metals in melting and making them flow readily, so that you may easily fill the cavities of your moulds.

Resume.—The district of Santa Eulalia lies 12 miles to the southeast of the city of Chihuahua, Mexico. The ore deposits occur in a Cretaceous limestone of unknown thickness, overlain by a series of rhyolitic tuffs and flows. The limestone is very gently folded and is cut by several systems of fissures, of which only those with a general north-south strike are pre-mineral and control the deposition. The deposits are of two main types; the earlier silver-bearing iron sulphide type occurs as high-grade tabular bodies resembling veins and as large masses of relatively low-grade ore, The gangue of this type is composed of lime-iron silicates that point toward a close association with an igneous rock mass which has not yet been encountered. In the later silver-lead-zinc type the ore occurs in vertical chimneys and horizontal mantas, principally as oxides, though at a depth of 1,500 ft. some sulphides have been encountered. During oxidation the ore chambers have increased in size owing to the solution of the walls by the sulphuric acid generated in the process, and a substitution has taken place of nearly one-half part by weight of the original constituents of the ore, by newly introduced elements and radicals. Both types are believed to have come from greater depths than those yet reached by mining, and their ultimate source, from a consideration of similar deposits, is believed to be an igneous rock in contact with the limestone at some horizon below. The deposits are believed to have been formed at unusually great depths, as indicated by the proved great vertical range of the silicate minerals coupled with the absence of the igneous rock, and by the practically unchanged character of the silver-lead-zinc ores as far as developed. The volcanic capping is believed to be distinctly later than the economically important ore deposition. The phenomenon of recovery of cold-worked metals is interesting not only because of its practical importance but also because of its fundamental significance in solid state reactions. Although extensive investigations1,2 have already been made in an attempt to discover the mechanics of the recovery process, many of the observations have not yet been satisfactorily correlated to provide a completely consistent model for the process. The wide differences in the recovery rates of various properties can be cited as a typical example of one of the difficulties that are encountered. Frequently, for example, the electrical resistance will have almost completely recovered before any recovery in tensile strength can be detected. Of course, such differences in the recovery rates of different properties might be explained by assuming that each property is a unique function of the work-hardened state, and consequently each property exhibits its own unique recovery rate. The assumption that different properties are uniquely related to the work-hardened state cannot be denied. On the other hand, the properties that recover at different rates often exhibit more or less parallel changes upon work-hardening. This suggests that the microstructural changes attending recovery are not exactly the reverse of the changes attending work-hardening. Several types of imperfections must be postulated in order to account for this apparent anomaly. The different recovery rates for various properties, then, are due to the different recovery rales of the type of imperfection to which each property is most sensitive as well as the unique dependence of each property on the cold- worked state. This concept assumes that a simple model of the work-hardened state consisting only of one type of imperfection, such as Taylor's type of dislocation patterns, is inadequate to cope with the diversified phenomena attending work-hardening and recovery. Although current models for the work-hardened state are not useful for describing all aspects of the recovery process, the general trends of the recovery of each postulated type of imperfection as a function of time and temperature should be at least qualitatively deducible from the rather well developed laws of kinetics of reactions in the solid state. Consequently, recovery data might prove useful for elucidating some aspects of the complexities of the work-hardened state of metals. A preliminary attempt to study work-hardening by investigating recovery rates of cold-worked metals is outlined in the following pages of this report. Experimental Procedure Many properties recover when cold-worked metals are annealed below their recrystallization temperature. Therefore, electrical resistivity, thermal electromotive force, X ray diffraction line widths, X ray diffraction line intensities, elastic spring back, density and other physical and chemical properties have been used to study the recovery process. Major interest, however, has generally been directed toward the recovery of the mechanical properties such as hardness, yield strength, and tensile strength. But a search of the literature suggests that the effect of recovery on the true stress-true strain curve has been neglected, in spite of the current recognition of the fundamental importance of such an investigation. An investigation on the effect of recovery treatment on the true stress-true strain curves in tension, therefore, was undertaken in the present study. Commercially pure aluminum (99. + pet Al) in the form of 0.100 in. thick rolled sheet of 2S-O aluminum alloy was selected as the material for this investigation because rather extensive correlatable data are already available on the recovery of some of its properties. Tensile specimens having a 6 in. long gauge section and a uniform reduced section width of 0.500 in. were machined from the sheet in accordance with a design that has previously been reported.3 All specimens were selected with their axes aligned in the rolling direction. In order to eliminate the effects of previous work-hardening and the effects of machining, the specimens were annealed for 15 min. at 750°F before testing. During tensile testing the loads were measured by means of a proving ring (sensitive to 1/2 lb) in series with the specimen.4 Strains were determined from the extension of a rack and pinion strain gauge sensitive to a strain of + 0.0001. Laboratory and plant-scale testwork on the extraction of gold from highly refractory antimonial and arsenical concentrates using both direct low-alkalinity pressure cyanidation, and acidic pressure pre-leaching followed by ambient low-alkalinity cyanidation, is described. A novel method for treating effluent solutions containing extremely high concentrations of base metal cyanides, as well as arsenic and antimony compounds, was developed in order to make the process ecologically acceptable.

Someone some time ago remarked that some chemists still insist on telling us how to determine copper by the electrolytic method. The writer must confess that he believes that everything is not known definitely as yet as to how the exact amount of copper is determined in such material as purest commercial electrolytic copper. Some of us are not yet convinced that the pure copper atom is at all times deposited from an acid solution and that no oxygen or hydrogen will, under certain conditions, accompany it. Difficulties with impurer material are frequent, but erroneous results are not always apparent, since these do not speak so readily for themselves as those in the first case. By this is meant that if a chemist finds 100 per cent. of copper in electrolytic copper it is pretty certain that he perceives the result to be wrong, while if he finds 0.1 per cent. of copper too much in a very impure material he is far more likely to be unconscious of his error. These, in a wide experience, are frequent happenings and the writer has always looked with interest to publications on this subject. In turn, he feels justified in giving to others a few of his own observations. Up to a few years ago there were two methods of electrolytic copper assay in technical use, which had in common, that the amount of copper deposited on the cathode did not exceed 2 g., and they differed in that, for the one a large sample1 (20 to 80 g.) was taken from the general sample by a splitting device, dissolved, and from the solution a small portion (to contain 1 or 2 g. of copper) measured out for the electrolytic deposition; in the other method the copper was determined, generally in 1-g. portions of the separated coarse and fine portions of the sample, all of which passed a 16 or 20-mesh screen, being accomplished by a 40-mesh screen,

The application of electric power for driving mine hoists handling heavy loads at high speeds has recently been extended by the installation of what is probably the largest electrically driven hoist in this country at the Granite Mountain shaft of the North Butte Mining Co., Butte, Mont. While the weight of rock which is hoisted by this machine is not the largest now being handled by electric mine hoists, the speed of hoisting is so, and the combination of the high speed with the heavy load has resulted in a machine of considerable interest to all those actively engaged in mining. Aside from mere considcration of size, this installation deserves attention because of the careful attention given, not only to the question of economy of operation, but to the details of construction and installation of the entire equipment. The conditions to be met in this installation were as follows: Weight of rock to be raised per trip, 7 gross tons........... 15,680 1b. Weight of skip.......................................... 8,000 1b. Weight of cage.......................................... 1,800 1b. Maximum depth of hoisting.............................. 4,000 ft. Diameter of rope.......................................... 15/8 Total weight suspended on one rope from drum............. 42,000 1b. Desired capacity-200 tons per hour from 4,000 ft. depth. The ore is mined in several levels and hoisting is carried on from the 800-ft. level down to the 2,700-ft., which is at present the maximum depth from which the ore is raised regularly. Development is proceeding and a depth of 2,900 ft. has already been reached. The rock is handled underground in cars holding % ton, and about 10 cars are the usual load for a skip. All of the ore is dumped into underground bins, which are of diffcrent capacities varying up to 250 tons. From the bins the ore is fed into the skips without passing into measuring pockets. The parent ultramafic of Nickel Mountain is an alpine-peri-dotite. Compositional layering and late stage dunites suggest the intrusive crystallized in the upper mantle or lower crust. The ultramafic mass was fault emplaced in the upper crust, probably during upper Jurassic time. Soil, saprolite and silica boxwork nickeliferous ores were formed over the Nickel Mountain peridotite during the development and later destruction of the Klamath peneplane. A complex fault pattern was produced by irregular gravity displacements along fault surfaces during the relative uplift of Nickel Mountain. The majority of the ores occur in the fractured hanging wall of these gravity faults. Consequently, structure mapping is important for mining purposes. Ore types at Riddle are classified on the basis of MgO, Fe, and Si02 contents as well as textures. The chemical, mineralogical and textural differences of the various ore types reflect differences in weathering histories. Satellitic ore bodies occur peripherally to Nickel Mountain. These are erosional remnants of landslides and large gravity fault blocks from Nickel Mountain.

There exists an unconfirmed opinion among many ironmasters that the combination of a small quantity of manganese, chromium, titanium, tungsten, aluminium, nickel, and some of the metalloids with iron has a beneficial effect upon the quality. And the impression prevails in some localities that the excellence of steel greatly depends upon the influence of some of these elements. Brit as the recorded experiments are so meagrely described, and made under such various conditions, the student in search of information upon the subject is somewhat bewildered by the contradiction of the opinions expressed. Observing some interesting phenomena while experimenting with an alloy of iron, copper, and nickel, I was led to determine the effect of some of the metals upon iron as free from contamination by other elements as it is possible to procure in practice, in order that the result of an alloy of an individual metal with iron might be more closely studied; for it is almost an impossibility to determine the influence of a small amount of one element upon a metal combined with a large amount of another, and the mere presence of another sometimes makes this difficult. And as most of the experiments recorded upon this subject have been made with iron containing sufficient carbon and other elements to interfere with the effect of that metal the influence of which it was desired to observe, I have endeavored to avoid these sources of error as far as practicable. This somewhat misnomered "continuous" face section is, in most mines today, still far from perfect continuity. Achieving uninterrupted flow of coal from the mining machine to the outside has been a long sought for goal. Clearly, the largest problem to be solved in continuous mining today is one of increasing the cutting time of the miner. Full machine utilization can never be achieved with the new high capacity miners as long as their performance is tied to that of the shuttle car. A recent development has proven, however, that truly continuous mining and haulage is possible. The Bell & Zoller Coal Co. working with the Research and Development Department of Hewitt-Robins Inc. developed and perfected a new mining system which offers advantages in terms of increased productivity at reduced mining costs and enhances the safety of personnel at the face. This new system involves the use of two pieces of equipment that form an unbroken link between the mining machine and the mine belt haulage system. These pieces are a Mobile Bridge Conveyor and an Extensible Panel Conveyor.

IN 1866, Thomas Graham1 called attention to the volume of gases, three times the volume of the sample, evolved from a meteoric iron heated in an evacuated porcelain tube. From that time to this the occurrence and significance of gases in metals have been the subject of investigation by many workers, among whom Sieverts,2 Iwasé3 and 0. W. Ellis4 stand preeminent. Sieverts and Iwasé concerned themselves with the solubility of a number of gases in metals in the liquid and solid states. They determined the absorption coefficients of these gases, and in all cases found a sharp change in solubility at the melting point of the metals. Ellis analyzed the gases evolved by solidifying copper and those occluded by the solidified metal. Lobley and Jepson5 endeavored to determine the effects of hydrogen, carbon monoxide and nitrogen on the porosity of copper that was allowed to solidify in the presence of each gas after 30 min. exposure to it in the
