This paper is in the nature of a rough preliminary report on the progress that has been made in the application of the mass spectrometer to various problems arising in the petroleum industry. A few years ago the authors considered a number of the problems that were arising in the qualitative and quantitative measurement of small amounts of hydrocarbons. The methods available of making analyses by chemical techniques appeared to leave much room for improvement. Without going into the reasons at this point, attention was turned to the possibility of employing physical instead of chemical methods of accomplish-ing the desired results. A preliminary investigation disclosed that the mass spectrometer presented a possibility of solving many problems which could not easily be accomplished by other methods. Work was begun in developing the necessary apparatus and technique. A great deal of encouragement and many valuable suggestions were received from Dr. Robert A. Millikan, Dr. W. R. Smythe, and Dr. W. N. Lacey, of the California Institute of Technology, and from Dr. E. 0. Lawrence, who recently received the Nobel Prize, of the University of California. The authors particularly wish to acknowl-edge the very great willingness of these out-standing scientists to be helpful in solving many of the problems that were involved. So far as the authors are aware, this was the first application of the mass spectrometer to commercial work. The results were considerably better than had at first been anticipated. Briefly, it is pos-sible to run a qualitative and quantitative analysis of an unknown mixture of hydro-carbon gases, with an accuracy of better than plus or minus 5 per cent of each of the various constituents. An exceedingly high degree of sensitivity has been obtained, and a relatively short time is required to com-plete an analysis. Furthermore, it is un-necessary to separate a mixture of gases into its various components in order to complete the analysis.

THE objectives of this communication are to present the solid-solution strengthening data for silver-base zinc single crystals and to evaluate the importance of strength contributions from several mechanisms through the use of this data combined with that for the silver-base aluminum case.' Some features of the yield point behavior of silver-base zinc crystals were previously reported.' Silver-base zinc alloys were prepared by induction melting 99.99 pct Ag with 99.9 pct Zn in high-purity graphite crucibles contained in argon-filled quartz tubes. After the first melting, the ingots were cut into short lengths, redistributed in the molds, and remelted in order to reduce solute-concentration variations. Alloy single crystals were then grown from the melt through the use of a modified Bridgeman technique which consisted of lowering the graphite crystal mold through a hot zone at a rate of 3/8 in. per hr. As in the melting operation, the molds were contained in argon-filled quartz tubes. Gage lengths 2 cm in length were introduced by both spark machining (circular cross sections) and abrading and acid etching (rectangular cross section) followed by electropolishing (a comparison of the critical resolved shear-stress values prepared by the two techniques showed no differences in strength values). The final cross-sectional areas of the crystals were approximately 5 sq mm. Prior to testing, the crystals were annealed at 600°C for 20 hr in argon atmospheres, furnace-cooled, and lightly electropolished. Crystal orientations were determined using the back-reflection method. The tensile testing was done on a Model FM Instron at a strain rate of 1(T4 per sec. Test temperatures of 77", 200°, and 400°K were attained by immersing the specimens in liquid nitrogen, dry ice-acetone mixtures, and silicone oil, respectively. The critical resolved shear-stress (CRSS) values for silver-base zinc crystals as a function of composition and testing temperature are given in Fig. 1. It will be noted that the CRSS for silver-base zinc solid solutions, as in the silver-base aluminum1 case, depends on temperature in a manner typical of fcc solid solutions: at high temperatures (-300°K and above), the CRSS is relatively temperature-independent but becomes strongly dependent on temperature at lower testing temperatures. A reasonable picture of solid-solution strengthening for silver-rich solutions at room temperature based on "direct" strengthening mechanisms3 is as follows. Since silver alloys have low stacking-fault energies, extended dislocations are expected and it is possible that Suzuki locking4 makes the major contribution to the room-temperature solute strengthening. This provides essentially temperature-independent strengthening since thermal motions of the dislocation line are not large enough to aid the dislocation in escaping the solute atmosphere extending over the fault width. A number of new AB, compounds, in which A is a rare earth or yttrium atom and B is Al, Mn, Fe, Co, or Ni, having the cubic MgCu, structure (Laves phase) are reported. In most of the compounds, the interatomic distances are normal; the lanthanide contraction is observed. However, in the compounds CeB2, B = Fe, Co, Ni, Ce appears to have a valence substantially greater than three; in CeAl2, Ce appears to be trivalent. These results are interpreted as vesulting from an energetically more favorable situation for the 4f electron of Ce to be lost to the 3d band of Fe, Co, nnd Ni. Evidence for the existence of homogeneitj! ranges in these compounds is presented. THE purpose of this paper is to report on the crys-tallographic investigations of a large number of new compounds, Table I, with the MgCuz structure (cubic Laves phase). It is a part of a continuing study of the magnetic properties and structures of binary systems involving the rare earths. In a previous paper' some of the magnetic properties of such systems were reported briefly. We have also reported2 a number of compounds of the CusCa type. The compounds were prepared by induction melting in Argon atmosphere of mixtures of stoichiomet-ric amounts of the constituent elements.* For most of the compounds fused alumina or silica crucibles were used as the containing vessel; graphite crucibles were used to prepare CeA12, NdAl2 and TbA12. X-ray powder photographs were taken with CrKa radiation and the use of Straumanis-type Norelco cameras of 114.6 mm diam. The compounds AB2 belong to space group Fd3m-Ol with 8A in a): (000; 01/2 '/2;3) + 000-; b % XA and 16B in dl: (000; oVa %; 3) + 5/87; % %; 7e % Vs\£>. Because the intensities of the reflections on the powder photographs of the different compounds are similar, relative intensities were computed only for DyMnz for CrKa radiation, Table 11. In the calculation of intensities, the Thomas and umeda3 atomic scattering factors, corrected for dispersion,4 were used. The agreement between observed and calculated intensities leaves little doubt that DyMnz has the MgCuz structure. Crystallographic data for the ABz compounds are given in Table JII. Twelve of these compounds have been reported by other authors. A comparison of the published results with our work is given in Table W.* ers of elements of lower purity, to peritectic reactions in some cases, and to the presence of homogeneity ranges in these alloys, so that melting losses would still result in single phase alloys. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to present the results obtained by solving the fractional flow' and frontal advance' equations to obtain oil recovery at water breakthrough as a function of the length of the system being flooded, the linear velocity of injection and the displacing phase viscosity. The method of solution makes use of the stabilized zone concept first presented by Terwilliger, et al3 when calculating saturation distributions in a gravity drainage system. In order to check the calculated results, the equations and method of solution were applied to the system on which Rapoport and Leas' reported experimental data. METHOD OF SOLUTION The solution of the fractional flow equation and the frontal advance equation is obtained by assuming that a water front forms to sweep the oil out ahead of it. There is ample evidence that under the proper conditions a water 'front does form. If this water front is not to dissipate, the water saturations which comprise it must have equal linear velocities. These water saturations are said to comprise the stabilized zone. Equation (2) indicates that for all these saturations and hence fw must plot as a straight line against saturation for those water saturations comprising the stabilized zone. The water saturations lying between the highest in the stabilized zone and the highest that can be achieved in the porous medium comprise the variable zone. Regardless of the numerical value of the length of the system, the variable zone must eventually span all of it, so that for long enough systems in Equation (1) will be small enough to be neglected. Hence, for the saturations in the variable zone Equation (1) can be simplified to In order to determine the composite fw function applicable to the entire range of saturations in the porous medium, it is necessary to find the water saturation which separates the stabilized zone from the variable zone. This dividing saturation must be on the curve defined by Equation (4), and a tangent curve at that point must pass through the initial water saturation to satisfy Equation (3). Hence, the valid fw curve is given by a straight line starting at the initial water saturation, tangent to the curve of Equation (4): and along the curve of Equation (4) from the point of tangency on. The point of tangency determines the water saturation dividing the zones. The length and shape of the stabilized zone can be found by solving Equation (1) for Integrating this expression numerically between any two saturations in the stabilized zone gives the distance separating these two saturations. By repeated integration, the saturation distribution of the stabilized zone can be determined. It is too late to gloat over the fact that minerals have furnished 67 per cent of the primary wealth of Pennsylvania. It is high time that Pennsylvanians do some constructive thinking in terms of the present and future with regard to the remaining mineral heritage.1 The discovery of a deposit of pyrophyllite in the South Mountain region of the Cumberland Valley indeed emphasizes the increased importance of a more exact inventory of the metal and mineral resources of Pennsylvania. Active geological work and research have been in progress for many years, but the surface has been little more than scratched. The results obtained thus far in survey and research have been extremely beneficial to the Commonwealth and a fundamental hub of its industrial development. But these activities are wholly inadequate in the face of rising demands for the future. The need for an accelerated program to continue a study of Pennsylvania's mineral resources on a more intensive scale was never more acute.2 In part, this has been caused by the insatiable demands of industry. It has been caused also by wasteful use and ignorance.

A YEAR ago the authors published a paper on the solubility of sulphur dioxide in molten copper.1 The data in that paper agreed closely with that obtained by previous investigators, which, however, did not agree with the theoretical predictions for solubility of triatomic gases of this type. It has generally been assumed that the reaction of solution is: [ ] Neglecting the slight change in copper concentration and considering that the concentrations of sulphur and oxygen are both proportional to the volume of gas absorbed, it follows that this volume should be proportional to the cube root of the pressure. It was found that a plot of the volume absorbed versus the cube root of the pressure gave a straight line, but that this line did not pass through the origin. Calculations of the equilibrium constant for the reaction showed that it was fairly constant for pressures above l00 mm. but that actually it approached zero at lower pressures. The conclusion was made therefore that the solubility as determined could not be expressed by Eq. I or by any other simple equation, particularly at low pressures. Other investigators have concluded that the solubility of sulphur dioxide in copper as well as in several copper alloys is more nearly proportional to the square root of the pressure.* Such a conclusion, however, does not satisfactorily account for the results, even when rather complicated mechanisms for the solution are assumed. The highly improbable speculations of Lepp2 and of Schneider and Esch3 based upon hypothetical dissociation pressures of Cu20 and (a; 2S dissolved in copper illustrate the type of reasoning that has been used to account for the discrepancy. In the discussion of the previous paper, the authors pointed out that the discrepancy might possibly be due to impurities in the copper, although the purest form available was used. Further consideration of the problem suggested that the impurities likely to have the greatest effect on the solubility of SO2 in copper were oxygen, sulphur and carbon. Accordingly, further experiments have been made to show the effects of these elements. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The apparatus used for measuring solubility was essentially the same as that shown in the previous paper. However, since it was desired to make measurements at low pressures, a McLeod gauge was added and 6-mm. glass tubing was substituted for the capillary. This increased the "hot volume" considerably but was necessary in order to obtain good vacuums in a reasonable length of time. A mercury diffusion pump was also installed.

The precipitation of the nitride Fe4N from the solid solution of nitrogen in a Fe and of the phosphide Fe3P from the solid solution of phosphorus in a Fe both lead to the formation of structures that may be easily identified as Widmanstatten figures, within the meaning of the term as used in this series of papers. A complete solution has been obtained for the figure formed by Fe4N. The structure of Fe3P, however, is not fully known and a complete solution of this figure thus cannot be obtained; nevertheless, a study of this figure has furnished some new information. Precipitation of Fe4N from Alpha Solid Solution of N in Alpha Fe Constitution of System Iron-nitrogen A knowledge of the constitution of the whole of the Fe-N system is unnecessary for this work, though the recent studies by Eisenhut and Kauppl and by Lehrerz have clarified most of the moot points; it is sufficient for our purpose to state that a Fe of high purity dissolves 0.42 per cent of nitrogen in solid solution at the eutectoid temperature, 591' C., and that this solubility decreases at first rapidly and then more slowly until at room temperature the solid solubility amounts to approximately 0.1 per cent nitrogen.3

The stress distribution at the surface of a twisted cylinder is analyzed along the boundary of a slip plane of arbitrary orientation and this analysis is applied to the torsion of cylindrical crystals of magnesium. A criterion for slip is developed and the critical resolved shear stress of magnesium in torsion is found to be 0.038 kg per sq mm. The mechanism of torsional deformation in magnesium and aluminum is described, as well as the relaxation of a twisted crystal at elevated temperatures. THERE has been considerable fundamental study A of the mechanism of slip occurring during deformation in tension and compression but comparatively little attention has been paid to the mechanism of torsional deformation. This paper is concerned with the way in which a single crystal deforms in static torsion and with the phenomenon of untwisting which a twisted crystal undergoes during annealing. Particular attention is paid to the application of the critical resolved shear stress law to torsional deformation. Probably the most likely mode of torsional deformation that can be imagined consists of rotation of one part of the crystal relative to another on the active slip plane. Here the most interesting feature is the slip direction. If a cylindrical single crystal is twisted about its axis and if, to consider the simplest case, the active slip plane is normal to the specimen axis, then the direction of gross slip at any point must always be at right angles to the radius drawn to that point. It follows that the crystallographic direction of slip must be continually changing, in sharp contrast to slip in tension which occurs in a crystallographically constant direction. Extensive investigations of slip in torsion have been made by Gough and his associates.' They made torsional fatigue tests on metal single crystals belonging to a number of different crystal systems and observed, with a microscope, the appearance of slip lines on the surface and of strain markings on the transverse cross section of cylindrical specimens. They concluded that the critical resolved shear stress law was just as valid in torsion as in tension, in the sense that slip occurred on that plane and in that direction in which the resolved shear stress was a maximum. They also established that the operative slip planes and directions were the same as in tension. They did not, however, measure the critical resolved shear stress in torsion nor, in fact, did they establish that a critical value of the resolved shear stress was necessary for the initiation of slip. Their investigations were, moreover, restricted to torsional fatigue tests which necessarily involve small strain amplitudes. The laminarturbulent transition was studied for monodisperse rigid polymer latices as functions of particle diameter and concentration at several tube diameters. Breaks in the graph of friction factor US Reynolds number were used to characterize the transition; rates of shear were sufficiently high so that Newtonian behavior at the high shear limiting viscosity could be assumed. No abnormal behavior was noted at concentrations below 30 volume percent. At higher concentrations, suppression of turbulence was observed with critical Reynolds numbers rising to as high as 5,500 at 50 volume percent. No definite effect on the transition was noted due to variation of particle size or tube diameter. The type of surfactant used to stabilize the latex was found to have an important influence on the critical Reynolds number. INTRODUCTION For some polymer solutions and solid-in-liquid suspensions, the transition from laminar behavior to turbulence in pipeline flow has been reported to take place at unusually low1-5 and in some cases at higher than normal6,7 critical Reynolds numbers. Extreme values of critical Reynolds numbers (NRe*) have been found to range from 1 to 6,000, as opposed to the values of 2,000 to 3,500 which are obtained for ordinary liquids. Observations have also been reported of drag reduction in fully developed turbulent flow, i.e., a decreased value of the friction factor in the Reynolds number-friction factor plot6*10-14 in colloidal and polymeric fluids. In some cases, turbulence suppression (unusually large values of Nre*) was noted to occur preceding the drag reduction,6 while a normal transition was noted in other cases of drag reduction.14 To relate the occurrence of turbulence suppression and drag reduction to the molecular or particulate structure of the fluid, it is desirable to characterize the structural variables with some precision. For most colloidal dispersions and polymeric fluids, this is very difficult; particle sizes, shapes and stiffnesses may vary over wide ranges in the same sample. Recently, however, a colloidal fluid has become available which consists of rigid spherical particles of highly uniform diameter dispersed in a simple Newtonian liquid. These are monodisperse polymer latices, prepared by carefully controlled emulsion polymerization reactions. The purpose of this research was to study the transition to turbulence in these well-characterized colloidal fluids as a function of concentration, particle diameter and tube diameter. Typical flow curves of latices of high solids content are shown in Fig. 1. While these curves were obtained with monodisperse latices, the general shape of the curve is also typical of a polydisperse latex. It is observed that a shear-thinning region occurs for low to moderate rates of shear. At sufficiently high shearing rates a limiting Newtonian viscosity is reached. The viscosity µ diminishes with decreasing volume fraction 4 at all shear rates. For 4 less than 0.25, latices are Newtonian at all rates of shear.15 An increase in average particle size (at a given extends the Newtonian viscosity region to lower rates of shear. Improvements in the X-ray method of measuring liquid saturation and saturation distribution are presented. Two identical direct current amplifiers have been added to measure continuously the intensities of the X-ray tube output and the beam which has passed through the core under test. The ratio of these intensities is automatically recorded on a modified Brown Electronik Recorder. Arrangements have been made to drive the core automatically and in synchronism with the recorder chart so as to give a continuous curve showing the variation of liquid saturation along the length of the core. By determining the ratio of the two X-ray beam intensities simultaneously the measurements are made essentially independent of small fluctuation in voltage and current supplied to the tube. This improved technique has been used for investigating the fluid distribution along the length of cores and core assemblies when one fluid is displaced by another. Typical results of these studies are shown. INTRODUCTION In a previous publication' a method was described for measuring the oil saturation in cores which was based on the absorption of X-rays by the fluid content of the core. While that technique is capable of yielding accurate results, the original apparatus was not especially convenient for determining the fluid distribution along the length of a core. This was primarily due to the slow response of the amplifier and galvanometer and the necessity of making a point by point survey of the material under investigation. It was, therefore, not only possible for sections of the core having a variable or unusual saturation distribution to escape observation entirely, but changes in output of the X-ray generator between readings on the unknown and the monitor introduced errors in the measurements that could be avoided only by further stabilization of the source or by taking a large number of readings. This paper describes a method and apparatus for recording continuously and automatically the intensity of the X-ray beam that is transmitted by a core. The variation of saturation with time at a given section of the core may thus be found, or by scanning the core by driving it in synchronism with the recorder the saturation distribution may readily be determined. As indicated in the previous paper, the X-ray method possesses an advantage over the weighing technique in relative permeability experimentation in that the core need not be removed from the holder for the purpose of making a saturation measurement. Furthermore, the actual distribution of fluid and the effects upon that distribution of inflow and outflow heads may be investigated. And errors due to gas bubbles or loss of liquid that are frequently sources of error in volumetric methods of saturation determination are avoided. PRINCIPLE OF THE METHOD The energy in an X-ray beam that has passed through an absorbing material is expressed by the well known formula: E = E0, e-cd (1) where E, is the energy in the incident beam, µ the mass absorption coefficient, c the density or concentration of absorbing material, and d is the length of path of the beam in the absorber. The coefficient µ varies with the wavelength of the radiation as well as with the absorbing material. The output of an X-ray tube varies in an approximately linear manner with the tube current, but to the second or higher power of the anode voltage. Moreover, the quality or wavelength distribution of the radiation varies with the voltage.

" The man is always greater than his work." The training of the men who are to develop the mineral resources of the world is the most important problem connected with mining engineering. It becomes ever more important to civilization as the mineral wealth of the earth approaches exhaustion. I have therefore decided to consider a few of the more important problems arising in the training of the mining engineer, and especially those arising in America. , The Peculiar Nature of Mineral Wealth. Mining and Agriculture are the two fundamental arts. Without the latter our existence would be precarious; without the former, our civilization impossible. Agriculture furnishes that regular supply of food and raiment which leads to the growth of large communities in which cultivated leisure first becomes possible; while mining furnishes the metallic thread from which is woven that complex fabric we call civilization. But in these two arts the conditions for success are widely different. Most of the crops that the farmer reaps may be harvested year after year, and the proper fertilizers being added, he may continue the annual harvest indefinitely, while, as a result of cultivation, his farm becomes yearly more valuable. But the crop the miner reaps can be harvested but once in the history of the race. Our mineral wealth has taken unknown ages to mature in the bosom of the earth. The ripened fruit can be plucked but once. There are no fertilizers for worked-out mines. It never pays to work over a mine that has been

Commercial processes of lead softening directly involve the behavior on fusion of mixtures of the oxides of antimony and lead, and the vapor pressures of these materials. Practically no quantitative data have been available for the discussion of lead softening from the point of view of the fundamental metallurgy of the process. The Pacific Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the University of California, in the course of its program of study of the fundamental properties of oxides and sulfides, recently made vapor pressure measurements upon the various forms of pure antimony trioxide.1 When these measurements were considered in connection with the softening and "fuming" furnaces which are often used for lead purification, an unexpectedly anomalous condition appeared. In brief, this anomaly consisted in the fact that in certain softening furnaces, where lead bullion of approximately 1 per cent antimony content was being treated at a temperature of approximately 1300" F., no appreciable volatilization of antimony occurred, there being produced only a "skim" containing from 15 to 20 per cent Sb, 65 to 60 per cent Pb, as mixed oxides. In the "fuming furnaces," where the temperature was only about 1400" F. and where an accumulation of "skims" from the primary softener was being treated with certain other antimony-containing materials, a considerable volatilization of antimony as oxide occurred; an "impure" skim of some 60 to 65 per cent Sb and 10 per cent Pb was also produced as mixed oxides. The latter material cannot be suitably treated in hearth-type or softener furnaces. The essential chemical difference between the first and second step is the customary use of some reducing material (such as petroleum coke) in the later operation. An obvious interpretation of the effect of coke in facilitating the fuming of the antimony is the supposition that the antimony may be reduced to metal, and volatilized as such. This supposition is improbable, however, when it is realized that a slight extrapolation of the vapor-

This is the thirteenth paper of a series from the laboratories of the Aluminurrl Company of America presenting the results of investigations of equilibrium relations in aluminum-base alloys prepared from electro-lytically refined aluminum. The ninth paper, on The Constitution of High-purity Aluminum-titanium Alloys,' presented a type of system that had not previously been encountered in aluminum alloys. Subsequent work has shown that there are several similar binary aluminum diagrams including that of aluminum and chromium. The present investigation was limited to the cxtreme alnminum end of the aluminum-chromium system. The first systematic investigation of the aluminum-chromium equilibrium diagram was carried out by Hindrichs.? The resulting equilibrium diagram with some imaginary additions suggested by Guillet3 is shown in Fig. 1. Recently Goto and D6gane4 investigated the constitution of aluminum alloys containing up to 32 per cent chromium, and presented the diagram that is reproduced in Fig. 2. Wide discrepancies in the two diagrams are evident. ONE of the chief hindrances to an understanding of the hardness of solid solutions is the sparsity of suitable hardness data. There is great need of a large body of hardness data obtained from many different alloys of high purity by identical testing methods and corrected to correspond to a single grain size. A considerable amount of such data has been obtained by means of the Meyer analysis on copper-rich and silver-rich solid solutions. There are enough of these data to permit comparison of numerous alloys at equal solute concentration in these two solvents, but only in a few cases is it possible to construct hardness-concentration curves for any given alloy. Therefore additional hardness work on most of these alloys is desirable. The primary solid solutions of silver with cadmium, indium, tin, or antimony as solute are of special interest, since all elements are from the same period of the periodic table and since, as shown previously,1 the hardening effect of equal percentages of these solutes is proportional to the lattice expansion produced by them. This paper presents the relation between hardness and concentration in the silver-antimony system from very dilute to nearly saturated solutions of antimony in silver. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloys were made from silver, 99.99 per cent pure, and antimony, 99.975 per cent pure. Silver and antimony were placed in graphite crucibles that had an ash content of less than 0.75 per cent. These metals were melted and allowed to solidify in a vacuum, which, after melting was complete, was usually equivalent to 3 mm. Of mercury. A high-frequency furnace was used. The ingots so obtained were worked and annealed to lessen segregation and to control grain size. Annealing was done in evacuated and sealed glass tubes. Hardness measurements on specimens from these ingots were by means of the Meyer analysis.3,4 Using a 4-mm.. ball, impressions were made under seven loads from 25 to 400 kg. The diameter of impression made under each load was measured. This enabled calculation of the constants in the well-known formula of Meyer. This paper is in the nature of a rough preliminary report on the progress that has been made in the application of the mass spectrometer to various problems arising in the petroleum industry. A few years ago the authors considered a number of the problems that were arising in the qualitative and quantitative measurement of small amounts of hydrocarbons. The methods available of making analyses by chemical techniques appeared to leave much room for improvement. Without going into the reasons at this point, attention was turned to the possibility of employing physical instead of chemical methods of accomplishing the desired results. A preliminary investigation disclosed that the mass spectrometer presented a possibility of solving many problems which could not easily be accomplished by other methods. Work was begun in developing the necessary apparatus and technique. A great deal of encouragement and many valuable suggestions were received from Dr. Robert A. Millikan, Dr. W. R. Smythe, and Dr. W. N. Lacey, of the California Institute of Technology, and from Dr. E. 0. Lawrence, who recently received the Nobel Prize, of the University of California. The authors particularly wish to acknowledge the very great willingness of these outstanding scientists to be helpful in solving many of the problems that were involved. So far as the authors are aware, this was the first application of the mass spectrometer to commercial work. The results were considerably better than had at first been anticipated. Briefly, it is possible to run a qualitative and quantitative analysis of an unknown mixture of hydrocarbon gases, with an accuracy of better than plus or minus 5 per cent of each of the various constituents. An exceedingly high degree of sensitivity has been obtained, and a relatively short time is required to complete an analysis. Furthermore, it is unnecessary to separate a mixture of gases into its various components in order to complete the analysis. The Mass Spectrometer The mass spectrometer should not be confused in any way with the optical 01 grating type of spectrograph now in general use. The operation of the mass spectrometer is entirely different in principle and bears practically no resemblance to the optical or grating instruments. The original conception and development of the mass spectrometer dates from and is generally credited to Aston, of Cambridge, England. An early accomplishment of his research, about 20 years ago, was the discovery that the inert gas neon was actually a mixture of two kinds of atoms, one of the atomic weight 20 and the other of atomic weight 22. These two components occurred mixed in such proportion as to yield the usual atomic weight of 20.2. One often reads of the rich placer gravels in many of the citnoe-trav-elqd rivers of South America. The apparent richness of these gold-bearing gravels impresses the traveler, and in fact he may see batea after batea showing enough colors to figure over a dollar per cubic yard. These workings are called "playas" from the Spanish word playa, meaning shore or beach. Many workings have been reported in tropical rivers, but to my knowledge no dredge has made a success in such deposits. Investigation generally shows that the area of richness is limited and especially that the depth of the rich concentration is hardly ever more than a few inches. The Cauca river in Colombia, South America, is noted for its many rich playas. This river rises near .Popayan in the southern part of Colombia, flows north through a narrow valley between parallel mountain ranges and empties into the Magdalena river near Maganque. , The airline distance between source and mouth of this river is only about 500 miles. The rainfall is large and the lower Cauca appears to be about the size of the Missouri river in the United States. From its mouth up to Valdivia, in the State of Antioqua, it is navigable. Above Valdivia is a narrow gorge, above which the river is again navigable for some distance. The part of the Cauca where the play a panning is most noticeable is from Valdivia down to where the Nechi river enters the Cauca, a distance along the river of about 100 miles. The current in this part is swift, so that the stern-wheel river steamers make the trip with some difficulty. In the course of my work in this section of Colombia I have had the opportunity to make a study of several of these play a workings and will give in detail the conditions observed. The Island"Playa" The richest of the island playas is about 40 miles below Valdivia and a little below the old town of Caceres. The shape of the river and the location of the deposit are shown in Fig. 1, which indicates the condition at low water. The river at this place is about 600 ft. wide and the island about 75 ft. wide by 300 ft. long. The island is made up of coarse pebbles, some of which are as big as a man's head. In times of high water this island is under several feet of water and in a swift current. When the river lowers the current is still fast enough to prevent sand or silt from covering the coarse pebbles.

IN southern Arizona and in Mexico the word caliche is in general use to denote a calcareous formation of considerable thickness and volume found a few inches, or a few feet, beneath the surface-soil, upon the broad, dry, gravelly plains and mesas. In western South America the same name is applied to the beds of crude soda-niter (Chili saltpeter). While these deposits of South America and of Arizona are totally different in composition, and have nothing in common, except that both occur in layers in the strata near the surface, it is probable that an explanation of the origin of the calcareous beds may equally apply to the accumulation of sodaniter and other deposits of easily soluble minerals. But the name, taken from the Latin, Calx, is more appropriate to the calcareous beds than to those of niter. Caliche has a wide distribution in the arid regions of Arizona and Mexico. It is usually hidden from view by a slight covering of soil; but it is easily found by digging, and is often revealed by a flow of water during heavy rains. It is practically a continuous sheet, from three to fifteen feet thick, of earthy limestone or travertine, through which the smaller plant-roots find their way with difficulty. The presence of this comparatively impervious layer of cemented earth may account for the absence of trees, or of the larger shrubs, over wide areas. The shrubs which gain a foothold are those whose roots do not extend far downwards, and which do not require much water, such as Larrea Mexicana and the [Cactaceoe]. If trees are planted, it is necessary to break up the caliche by blasting, or at least to crack the upper layers. The top of the caliche is more dense and solid than the lower portions. The surface of this top crust, or layer, is comparatively smooth, though undulating, while the lower portions, under the crust, are irregular, cavern-

*Original Pages Missing From Book HANNA COAL CO., Division of Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Co., operates three large under- ground mines in eastern Ohio. The section of Pitts- burgh No. 8 coal seam in which these mines are located varies in thickness from 52 to 64 in. It is immediately overlain by a stratum of shaly material 12 to 15 in. thick locally known as draw slate, which is structurally very weak and which disintegrates rapidly upon exposure to atmosphere. Immediately above the draw slate as it is normally found is a band of extremely high ash material 6 to 12 in. thick known as roof coal or rooster coal, and above this is a stratum of conglomerate material varying from 4 to 10 ft in depth. Overlying the conglomerate is' a relatively thick stratum of limestone, the first stable material above the Pittsburgh coal seam in eastern Ohio. With the method of full-seam mining that has been adopted, draw slate is shot down, loaded with the coal, and removed in the preparation plants. The roof coal then becomes the permanent roof. The major problem in mining the No. 8 seam in eastern Ohio is control of the roof. Since the strata above the draw slate contains no material with a structure firm enough to provide self-support, the roof begins to sag in a relatively short time after the coal and draw slate have been removed. The problem thus becomes one of getting temporary safety posts under this roof as quickly as possible to prevent a break or separation from occurring either in the roof coal or in the conglomerate above it.
