The permeability of Mo-0.5 pel Ti to hydrogen was investigated over a limited range of temperature and pressuire (709° to 1100°C, 1.i and 2.0 atm). The resulting permeability, p, is found to obey the The experimental data justifies the permeation mechanism as a diffusion contl-olled pnssage of Ilvdrogen atoms through the metal barrier. 1 HE permeability of metals to hydrogen has been investigated by a number of workers and their published results have been tabulated by Barrer' up to 1951. Since most of the work on the permeability has been accomplished prior to this date, the compilation is fairly complete. Mathematical discussion of the permeability process has been reported by Barrer, smithells, and more recently by zener. From these efforts several facts are observed. First, the permeability of metals to diatomic gases involves the passage through the metal of individual atoms of the permeating gas. This is evidenced by the fact that the rate of permeation is directly proportional to the square root of the gas pressure. Second, the gas permeates the lattice of the metal and not along grain boundaries. It was shown by Smithells and Ransley that the rate of permeation through single-crystal iron was the same after the iron had been recrystallized into several smaller crystals. Third, it has been observed that the rate of permeation is inversely proportional to the thickness of the metal membrane. Johnson and Larose5 verified these phenomena by measurirlg the permeation of oxygen through silver foils of various thicknesses. Similar findings were noted by Lombard6 for the system H-Ni and by Lewkonja and Baukloh7 for H-Fe. Finally, it has been determined that for a gas to permeate a metal, activated adsorption of the gas on the metal must take place. Rare gases are not adsorbed by metals, and attempts to measure permeabilities of these gases have proved futile. ~~der' found negative results on the permeability of iron to argon. Also, Baukloh and Kayser found nickel impervious to helium, neon, argon, and krypton. From what was stated above concerning the dependence of the rate on the reciprocal thickness of the metal barrier, it is seen that although adsorption is a very important process, at least in determining whether permeation will or will not ensue, it is not the rate determining process for the common metals. A case in which adsorption is of sufficient inlportance to cause abnormal behavior has been noted in the case of Inconel-hydrogen and various stainless steels.'' APPARATUS The apparatus used in this study is shown in Fig. 1. The membrane is a thin disc (A), but is an integral part of an entire membrane assembly. The entire unit is one piece, being machined from a solid ingot of metal stock. When finished, the membrane assembly is about 5 in. long. Two membrane assemblies were made; the dimensions of the membranes are given in Table I. The wall thickness is large compared to the thickness of the membrane, being on the average in the ratio of 13 to 1. There exists in this design the possibility that some gas may diffuse around the corner section of the membrane where it joins the walls of the membrane assembly, If such an effect is present, it is of a small order of magnitude, as evidenced by the agreement of the values of permeability between the two membranes under the same temperature and pressure. A thermocouple well (B) is drilled to the vicinity of the membrane. The entire membrane assembly is then encased in an Inconel jacket and mounted in a resistance furnace. The interior of the jacket is connected to an auxiliary vacuum pump and is always kept evacuated so that the membrane assembly will suffer no oxidation at the temperatures at which measurements are taken. The advantages of this configuration are: 1) there are no welds about the membrane itself, so that the chance of welding material diffusing into the membrane at elevated temperatures is remote. 2) It is possible to maintain the membrane at a constant temperature. Since the resulting permeation rate is very dependent upon temperature, it is advisable to be as free as possible from all temperature gradients. 3) It is possible to obtain reproducible results using different specimens. THERE is a small area about Murray where bedded gold quartz veins occur in Prichard slate. The ore taken from the upper levels, during the early days, was free milling and was treated by stamp milling and amalgamation. There was likewise a considerable placer working. The report is current that tungsten (scheelite) was encountered, which interfered with the amalgamation in the stamp mills and which, in placering, collected in the riffles in the sluice boxes and. clogged them. Consequently, in the quartz mines, the scheelite, when encountered, was rejected, being thrown into the waste, sometimes inside the mine and at other times outside on the clump. The free surface ores became worked out and as the ore in depth became pyritic and rebellious to amalgamation the mines closed down. Last spring tungsten ore brought a high price, near $80 per unit, 60 per cent. W03 and up. This so stimulated the output of tungsten ore that old clumps were explored and waste stored in the mines was gone over. Tungsten was likewise mined from virgin ground. So the district produced quite heavily for a time. The condition now is different. The price is not so high, about $20 per unit W03, which makes profits questionable when mining in new ground. The accumulations from early clay mining have been exhausted and the output has greatly declined. The Golden Chest mine was the heaviest producer of tungsten. The months of June and July were spent at this mine studying the problem. Since the mine had produced both gold and tungsten, we looked forward to the problem of recovering both from what might be called a gold-tungsten ore. A study of the Golden Chest vein showed this not to be so there. While gold ore and tungsten ore come from the same vein, the tungsten ore is confined to a more or less disturbed or distorted portion

The existing topographical features of the United States present many points of interest to the student of dynamical geology, but there is, perhaps, no subject which offers a more promising field for investigation than the relations between the geological structure and the mineralogical characteristics of the principal mining districts. There are seven prominent culminating points in the relief of North America, each one of which can be used as a type of the physical features of all the others. Again, if we divide these seven elevated districts into two sets, we shall discover a still more striking parallelism between the individual members of each group. But the most remarkable revelation is the fact that each one of these points is more or less closely the centre of an area of economically important mineral resources. It is interesting to note in this connection that six of these mineral tracts lie mainly within the borders of the United States, three of them being almost wholly in our territory. For

(with map on plate I.) THE coal-beds of Canyon City are situated six miles below the town, upon the Arkansas River. At this point the Rocky Mountains have thrown out from their main ridge two spurs. The one to the north, containing Pike's Peak and Cheyenne Mountain, is known as part of the "Rim Range;" the one to the west and south is known as the `1 Green¬horn Range." Against these syenitic mountains, the later rocks are piled and uplifted; at right angles to the direction of this main uplift is the axis of a lesser plication. On the north, west, and south, the pitch is steep, gradually flattening as it approaches the centre of the basin and rising again to the east at a pitch of about 5°, thus forming a perfect basin, the centre of which is only three miles east of the base of the Greenhorn Range.

WHEN I agreed to accept your Committee's suggestion that I talk to you at this meeting on the future of copper, lead and zinc mining, I could not help wondering why I had been chosen to be a prophet. Knowing the pious nature of your committee, I thought I had better look up and see what the Bible says about being a prophet, and what the dictionary definition of a prophet is. The word "prophet" comes from the Greek and is defined as "one who speaks through a divine inspiration." Also, in the Gospel of Saint Matthew, Christ tells us that a prophet is "not without honor save in his own country and in his own house." That gave me pause until I remembered that after all, I had started my professional career as a Naval Architect, not as a Mining Engineer, and consequently, this might be a clue to the fact that the eminent geologists of this society, who know infinitely more about the world's crust than I do, were passed over in this assignment. In thinking back, I then remembered that the first really successful prophet was Noah and that Noah was a Naval Architect. Here then was the answer. One more quotation from the Bible I shall take as my text: In Ecclesiastes, chapter I, verse 9: "The thing that hath been is that which shall be." This paper is written as a discussion of the paper, "Buckling of Tubing in Pumping Wells, Its Effects and Means for Controlling It" by Arthur Lubinski and K. A. Blenkarn, which war published in the March, 1957, issue of Journal oP Petroleum Technology. An analogy is drawn between the buckling of tubing in pumping wells and a fiube, fitted with frictionless pistom, linked by an inelastic rod, and which is subject to an internal pressure. A simple derivation shows that the critical internal pressure exerts a hydrostatic force on the pisfon which is close to the Euler load for compression buckling of the same tube. While the results agree with those of Ref. I, the basis of calculations has been changed and clarified. The presence of internal upsets at the pistons is discussed. INTRODUCTION In the Appendix, Lubinski and Blenkarn state that a tube with ends closed by frietionless pistons connected by an inelastic rod (Fig. 1) will behave as a column loaded with a force equal to the tension force in the rod. They note that, while the fluid may not resist a shear force, the moment in every cross section is piston force multiplied by the elastic line deflection (c.f., the loaded column). Since the equations of the elastic lines are similar in the two cases, the solution is carried over from the loaded column. On the contrary it is suggested that while the method of solution remains unchanged from the column case, the actual stress distribution is different, a fact which is taken into account in this note. A simple method of approximating the buckling pressure is given, and their reasoning in our mathematical language is continued. GENERAL EQUATIONS The equation of an elastic line, initially straight in the x direction (Fig. 2), is given by In the case of a loaded column, this may be written: For the pressurized tube it was shown, by analogy with the loaded column, that tion has a solution that, for P, = EI/P, any deflection is stable (a criterion for buckling). An attempt will be made to describe more precisely, the forces acting on the tube, and to analyze the buckling condi,tions. DISCUSSION If the tube assumed a deflected position, the volume between the pistons would increase so that in deflecting, the energy of the fluid would decrease. When the increase in elastic energy of the tube (due to bending) is equal to the decrease of fluid pressure energy, buckling conditions exist. Analyzing the forces on the tube (Fig. 3), two transverse forces, T,, T,, exerted by the pistons, are balanced by a resultant of the pressure elements which are linearly dependent on the local curvature of the elastic line (Fig. 4). Unlike most buckling cases, the forces depend on the shape of the elastic line, a condition that makes a rigorous mathematical treatment difficult. Several approximations may be used to clarify the problem.

In recent years examination of thin foils of metals and alloys has been widely used in studies of deformation and phase-transformation mechanisms. Applications of this technique to studies of titanium and titanium alloys have been infrequent. Therefore, as a large number of titanium alloys have been investigated in this laboratory, it is proposed to give an account of methods used. Particular emphasis will be placed on some of the artifacts introduced in thin foils of titanium and titanium alloys during preparation. Experimental Procedure. It has been found that a large number of titanium alloys can be electropolished in a solution consisting of 30 cu cm perchloric acid (60 pct), 175 cu cm n-butyl alcohol, and 300 cu cm methyl alcohol. Thin foils are prepared using the window method and the electropolishing conditions listed in Table I. Although this solution is not unique, it is attractive because of its low concentration of perchloric acid and the wide range of alloys for which it can be used. Electropolishing is conducted at below -25°C as above this temperature a brown anodic film is produced on the specimen surface. Temperatures above -25°C also accentuate preferential attack of the 0 phase in the two-phase alloys, which unfortunately occurs at all temperatures. Contamination. It is advantageous to reduce the specimen to a thickness of 25 to 50 p prior to electropolishing, since the low-temperature electropolishing technique results in a low rate of metal removal. THE development of the natural resources of any district of any magnitude, inevitably gives rise to many problems off title, usually due to the greatly enhanced value of the land. The development of the mining industry in the Quapaw Agency has been no exception to this general rule. Our problems, how-ever, have not been many or particularly serious. The Quapaws were allotted and patents issued by the United States Government in 1895. These patents contained a restriction against alienation for a pe-riod of twenty-five years. The effect of the restric-tion was to prevent the Indian from selling, leasing, or in any way encumbering his land. The Govern-ment, in a paternalistic spirit, sought to teach the Indian thrift and industry and to insure him a place of residence. This is evidenced by the first Leasing Act passed by Congress, which permitted only incom-petents and those physically disabled to lease their land for either agricultural or mining purposes. The able-bodied Indian was denied the right to lease. It soon became apparent to the Government, how-ever, that this was a mistaken policy, and in 1897 a General Leasing Act was passed by Congress and it was under this act that the mining industry in the Quapaw Agency was developed. The act, reads as follows: "That the allottees of land within the limits of the Qua- paw Agency, Indian Territory, are hereby authorized to lease their lands, or any part thereof, for a term not ex-ceeding three years, for farming or grazing purposes, or ten years for mining or business purposes. And said al-lottees and their lessees and tenants shall have the right to employ such assistants, laborers, and help from time to time as they may deem necessary: Provided, That when-ever it shall be made to appear to the Secretary of the Interior that, by reason of age or disability, any such allottee cannot improve or manage his allotment properly and with benefit to himself, the same may be leased, in the discretion of the Secretary, upon such terms and conditions as shall be prescribed by him. All acts and parts of acts inconsistent with this are hereby repealed." It was the interpretation of this Act that gave rise to our first serious problems. It will be noted that the Act says that "allottees of land" within the limits of the Quapaw Agency are authorized to lease their land. Thus, the first question was presented by the use of the term "allottee," and the question was as to whether or not Congress intended to limit the Quapaw Indian to the leasing of his own allotment or did Congress mean that the term "allottee" was synonym-ous with "Indian" and intend to give the Indian a right to lease both his allotment and his inherited land and was an Indian without an allotment an "allottee" even though he was a member of the Qua-paw tribe and the owner of the Quapaw land by in-heritance, and not being an allottee, could he lease his inherited Quapaw land under the authority granted in this Act?

During an investigation of the copper-rich portion of the copper-silicon-iron system as part of an extensive research program on P.M.G. alloys, which was begun in 1937 in the research laboratory of the Phelps Dodge Corporation, it became apparent that the binary copper-silicon system below 7 per cent Si needed revision, therefore an investigation was undertaken. Both X-ray methods and microscopic technique were employed. Despite the many investigations that have the clarification of this system as their object, no two successive reports on the system have agreed in placement of the alpha-phase solubility limit, and uncertainty about the secondary phase first to appear has been voiced several times.3,4,5 It was therefore not surprising, when T. Isawa's6 and M. Okamoto's7 works were reported at the time we were finishing up our experimental work, to find essential disagreement between their results and ours. But when C. 5. Smith's latest work on the copper-silicon systema was published just as we were finishing our laboratory report, it was indeed gratifying to find that the latter's diagram and ours checked in all essential features, except the temperature of the peritectoid line above 830" C. Many attempts were made to retain the beta phase during the present investigation, but none was successful. Isawa,6 however, reports that he has been able to obtain X-ray photograms of the beta phase. The structure, he states, is body-centcrcd cubic with a lattiee constant of 2.848 ,&. at 7.2 per cent Si. Okamoto7 and Smith8 both use the designation Kappa for the hexagonal phase, and to avoid confusion this designation will he adhered to in the present paper. Preparation of Samples The alloys were melted in vacuum in a high-frequency furnace. from copper cathodes containing 99.98 per cent Cu, and specially refined silicon supplied by The Electro Metallurgical Co. St. Joe Minerals Corp. opened a new $30 million mine and mill at its Balmat-Edwards division in September. It will be the largest single zinc mining operation in the United States. St. Joe expects to produce more than 200,000 tons of zinc concentrates from its combined Balmat-Edwards mines and mills in 1972, equivalent to more than 100,000 tons of zinc metal-20% of U.S. mine production. The company has operated in Northern New York since 1926, having commenced zinc mining with its Edwards mine and mill, 12 miles from Balmat. They will continue to operate at a rate of 31,000 tons of concentrate per year. St. Joe started the Balmat facility in 1930 with two mine shafts and a mill, with a capacity of 2300 tpd.

IN the study of the structure or the properties of a series of alloys or nonmetallic compounds, it is often advantageous to express the com-position not as percentage by weight, according to which the material is always made up and analyzed, but as the atomic percentage of the two constituents. The conversion from the one to the other is repre-sented by the formulas: 100A 100x or 1 x/A+100-x/B B(100-x) _ 100yA 100y [2] X. yA + (100 - y)B or y (100 - y) where x and y are the weight and atomic percentages respectively of the element of atomic weight A, and (100 - x) and (100 - y) are the per-centages by weight and by atoms respectively of the element of atomic weight B. While calculations according to these formulas are simple, they are time consuming if several conversions have to be made. In 1931 Water-man1 constructed a nomograph for performing the conversion, but this did not permit an accuracy greater than about 1 per cent to be obtained in the neighborhood of 50 per cent. Ölander2 has proposed a graphic method simpler than Waterman's and one that gives a uniform precision throughout the entire scale. The possible accuracy is about 0.5 per cent of the whole, depending on the size and accuracy of the coordinate paper used. Recently, Hermann3 has described a slide rule for making the calculations. Endurance Properties of Non-ferrous Metals Discussion of the paper of D. J. McADAM, JR., presented at the Syracuse Meeting of the Institute of Metals Division and issued, as Paper No. 1506-E, with Mining AND METALLURGY, October, 1925. H. F. MOORE,* Urbana, Ill. (written discussion).-This paper says that the results of tests of some non-ferrous metals made at the University of Illinois and in the testing laboratories at McCook Field are abnormal when they do not agree with results obtained by the author. The writer can see no inherent reason why results of the type uniformly reported in this paper are any more normal. The knee of the stress-cycle, or S-N, diagram comes at different lengths of life for different metals. For steel, the knee occurs after from 1,000,000 to about 4,000,000 cycles, and for some non-ferrous metals not before 20,000,000 of 30,000,000 cycles. The writer can see nothing inherently abnormal in finding certain nonferrous metals for which the knee of the stress-cycle curve occurs at 1,000,000,000 cycles or higher. The writer has had experience with both the cantilever and the rotating-beam testing machine, and thinks that the chance of whipping action in the cantilever machine is a more serious handicap than the action the author has pictured. Furthermore, the writer questions whether the author has shown the existence of a clearly marked and definite endurance limit for all the non-ferrous metals he has tested including the following: Nickel (CT and A-16, Fig. 1), monel (CS-5.5 and BK, Fig. 2), bronze (F and CK, Fig. 4), aluminum bronze ( BJb-1, Fig. 6).

For the past several years the policy of a large section of our mining industry in relation to our present bureaucratic form of government has become increasingly amusing, if not a little disgusting. In the past, mining men have always featured themselves the self-announced champions of free enterprise, and, generally, this conviction, was substantiated by their deeds. In recent years, however, a large group of the industry, while still expounding, from the front porch, the principles of free enterprise and a sound economy based upon the law of supply and demand, have gone around to the back door with palm extended, to join labor, farmers, bureaucrats, and other pressure groups to get their share of the take. The procurement of subsidies, bonuses, increased metal prices, and government assistance in a multitude of forms seems to have obscured from their thinking the welfare of the country as a whole and the sounder economic principles of a balanced budget and lower taxes. At the recent Colorado Mining Association convention in Denver, I. was alarmed to see just how far this specialinterest type of thinking has progressed within the mining industry. Government assistance to mining. was generally considered inadequate, and a flat bonus for any new mineral discovery was proposed. It was disquieting, too, to learn how far the federal alphabet agencies have entered into the mining industry and of the thousands of highly paid technical. men on the federal payroll required to man these numerous overlapping agencies and bureaus. Now all this is very fine, and some aspects of the federal give-away program can be very appealing to the unsuspecting in the mining industry as they have been to those in other groups. Some of these expensive programs may bring about a few dividends or even several new mines. But to this whole line of pump-priming reasoning there is one big disastrous fallacy.

Wrought unalloyed iodide chromium, containing 39 to 95 ppm total interstitials, has a tensile transition temperature of —15°C. Re crystallizing at 1100°C causes the transition to rise to 90° to 390°C, depending on the purity, grain size, and cooling rate after annealing. At about the 100 ppm level, individual additions of carbon or nitrogen raise the transition of both wrought and recrystallized chromium by as much as 210°C, while oxygen has a lesser effect, and sulfur essentially no effect. High transitzon temperatures are exhibited by recrystallized and quenched chromium, and appear to be associated with the amount and distribution of inter-stitials. The latter cm be either in solid solution or in the form of precipitates within the grains or at the grain boundaries. Quench hardening in chromium is primarily caused by nitrogen. The hardness, re crystallization, and grain growth behavior of chromium with and without impurity additions were also investigated. BECAUSE of low density and good oxidation resistance, chromium-base alloys are potentially useful for elevated-temperature applications. The main deterrent to the use of chromium in structural applications is its lack of low-temperature ductility, especially in the recrystallized condition. Accumulated evidence has shown that the ductility of chromium is sensitive to purity. The objective of the current study was to determine the effect of common nonmetallic impurities on the tensile properties of high purity chromium. The separate effects of carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur additions on the ductile-to-brittle transition were evaluated for wrought and recrystallized material after various cooling rates. EXPERIMENTAL WORK Unalloyed iodide chromium and seven impurity alloys containing individual carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, or sulfur additions were prepared in rod form. Nominal additions were 100 ppm C, N, and S, and 100 to 500 ppm O. The additions were about a factor of ten greater than the residual amounts in the unalloyed material. The seven alloys and two unalloyed compositions were consolidated into four-pound ingots by conventional consumable arc melting of pressed and welded electrodes under 0.5 atm of helium. Impurity additions were made to the electrode in the form of crushed master alloys. The impurity alloys were double melted to improve homogeneity. The ingots were broken down by extrusion at 1200°C in evacuated steel cans at a reduction ratio of 18 :1, using a molten borosilicate glass lubricant and a ram speed of 80 in. per min. The cans were removed by acid pickling, and the chromium core ground free of surface undulations. Cut lengths were sheathed in mild steel and swaged at 900°C until the core was about 1/4 in. in diam. Two additional 15-lb ingots of unalloyed chromium (ICr-3, ICr-4) were prepared by arc melting and broken down by 26:1 extrusion at 1250°C without a steel can. The billet was lubricated and protected from contamination by a coating of molten glass. The resulting extrusion was then sheath swaged as described previously. This machine is an improvement on the well-known endless travelling belt used for dressing slimes in many mills; the chief point of difference, and constituting the essential advantage of the present over the old form, is the application to the machine of a secondary agitating or shaking motion, in addition to the ordinary progressive motion of- the belt. In the machine as heretofore made, the inclined belt or apron moved slowly up against a thin stream of water and ore, depositing the concentrations carried over in a tank placed below, through which the belt travelled, of course, in a reversed position. By reference to the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that in this main principle the new modification does not differ materially; but the means by which it is carried out are essentially different. Louisiana experienced deeper and increased drilling during 1934, resulting in the discovery of five new fields: Bosco, Acadia and St. Landry Parishes; Lake Hermitage, Plaquemines Parish; Roanoke, Jefferson Davis Parish; Gillis, Calcasieu Parish; and Four Isle, Terrebonnc Parish. New sands were discovered at New Iberia, Iberia Parish; Lake Washington, Plaquemines Parish; Sligo, Bossier Parish; and in the Rodessa gas field, Caddo Parish. Other miscellaneous events worthy of mention are the continued leasing of prospective oil and gas lands in North and South Louisiana, extensive geophysical work in the Gulf Coastal area, and increased interest in the development of flank production on piercement type domes, resulting in the acquisition of flank acreage and the leasing of several shallow domes in the Gulf Coast and Interior salt-dome areas. The total oil production for Louisiana during 1934 was 32,529,082 bbl., an increase of 6,929,280 bbl. over 1933. The total daily production at the end of the year from 2421 wells was 102,752 barrels. North Louisiana During the year, 144 oil wells and 68 gas wells were completed in North Louisiana as compared with 111 oil wells and 47 gas wells during 1933. The North Louisiana oil production was 9,274,050 bbl. as compared with 10,023,580 bbl. during 1933, a decline of 749,530 bbl. The normal decline in the old fields and especially in the Zwolle area was partly offset by increased production in the Converse field, Sabine Parish, and by acid treatment of wells in the Zwolle, Converse and Caddo fields. There were no new fields discovered during 1934. During the year R. W. Norton enlarged the boundaries and reserves of the Rodessa gas field. A series of gas-bearing sands, was discovered in J. B. French, No. 1-B, sec. 34, 23 N. 16 W., below the oolitic lime found at 5500 ft. in which formation all previous wells had been completed. The total depth of this well was 5825 ft.
