Some mixtures of sulphide and oxide ores from the Tintic district in Utah are of a sufficiently good grade to be shipped to the smelter without beneficiation. In mining this type of ore, however, a material tonnage of ore of a similar composition but of lower grade is obtained. It is a question of economics whether such ore should be shipped with a certainty of a small return or concentrated if that would yield a sufficiently increased return to amortize plant construction and upkeep and yield a higher rate of profit than at present. It may be assumed that the tonnage of this borderline ore is constantly increasing and that eventually it will attain such proportions as to justify plans for milling on a relatively large scale. Under existing conditions, the producer of mixed sulphide and oxide ores is not greatly concerned about the physical characteristics of his ore or of its mineralogical complexities, since his contract with the smelter calls for payment on the basis of chemical analysis. When concentration is contemplated an entirely different picture is presented. Percentages of valuable metal content must then be con-sidered in terms of minerals, for it is in the form of minerals that recoveries are made and losses sustained. In describing the performance of a given flotation mill and reagent combination, it may be stated as a generality that a specific percentage recovery of valuable elements is made. Technically, however, the concentrator is really constructed and the reagents are selected to recover the valuable minerals. These considerations must be given prominence in discussing borderline ores from the Tintic district because of their physical characteristics and mineralogical composition. Because of these peculiarities they may be justly termed complex, since their lead, silver, and copper contents are each represented by two or more minerals of different chemical composition and presenting widely divergent physical properties. The experiments were carried out by the method of measuring the electromotive force of concentration cells having zinc as a reference electrode, the second electrode being the liquid alloy Zn-Sn-Cd-Pb. The electrolyte consisted of liquid chlorides and had zinc ions. The measurements were made for seventy -five alloys of different mole fractions within the temperature range of 714° to 877°K. The experimental results enabled the calculation of the activity of zinc in tested solutions. The activities of zinc were calculated by means of Krupkowski's formulas.3 In addition, the formulas for coefficients of activity of zinc, tin, cadmium. and lead as the function of composition and temperature were given. Activity of zinc was compared with the values obtained from experimental results, and good agreement has been observed. On this basis it can be stated that the theoretical formulas are suitable for determining the thermodynamic properties of liquid quaternary metal solutions. IN the metallurgical processes being carried out at present multicomponent liquid metal solutions take part. For the thermodynamic analysis of these processes it is necessary to know the thermodynamic properties of these solutions. Therefore, many experimental and theoretical papers deal with this problem. The theoretical papers are generally based on the assumption that the structure of liquid metals is similar to their structure in the solid state. In this manner the model of liquid solution, consequently described by means of statistical thermodynamics, has been accepted. This method is being lately developed, especially for solid solutions. Statistical thermodynamics was applied among others by Guggenheim 1 for describing the thermodynamic properties. Unfortunately, the formulas of statistical thermodynamics are often not suitable for the interpretation of experimental results. Attention should be drawn to the relations obtained by means of formulas of phenomenological thermodynamics which always have constants derived with the aid of experimental methods. In the case of the multi-component solutions which contain some additions of impurities besides the basic metal, wagner2 introduced interaction parameters. Equations for the relationship between the activity coefficients and composition were also given by Krupkowski." he application of these formulas requires a good knowledge of the thermodynamic properties of the corresponding binary systems. In these formulas, as in Wagner's, there appear constants which should be determined from ex- perimental data. Nowadays, different experimental methods are applied for evaluating the thermodynamic functions of solutions, for instance: vapor pressure measurements, calorimetric methods, and the measurements of electromotive force of concentration cells. In the present paper this last method for evaluating the thermodynamic properties of four-component systems, Zn-Sn-Cd-Pb, was applied. For instance in the case of Zn-Sn solutions Alabyshev and Landratov, 4 Fiorani and Valenti, 5 and ptak6 performed the investigations. The Zn-Pb system was worked out by Kleppa 7 and Cd-Pb and Cd-Sn by Elliot and chipman.' This method was also applied for determining the activity of zinc in ternary solutions. 1) EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The experimental arrangement with detailed description is given in Fig. 1. It consists of resistance furnaces, one serving for melting samples and the other containing the flat-bottomed, measuring quartz tube with the liquid electrolyte. Liquid metals and alloys are in glass supremax tubes, which have an opening in their lower part above the metal level. This opening allows the filling of the tubes by the electrolyte. In these tubes tungsten wires are placed which by means of suitable conductors are connected with a potentiometer. For a number of years I have, at odd times, tried to perfect a method of assay sufficiently delicate to find and estimate minute quantities of gold and silver. The object in view was to examine rocks remote from veins or mineral areas, in order to test the probability of the lateral-secretion theory. Having succeeded in measuring approximately the amount of gold and silver contained in one cubic centimeter of sea-water, I present a detailed account of the method employed, with some of the results obtained. General Method of Assay. The use of purified lead without other flux, blowpipe methods, extraction by cyanide, and measurement of the beads by the microscope. Purged Lead. The method of testing is by cupellation. On a properly prepared cupel, it is easy to cupel and find a bead of 0.002 mm. diameter. Such a bead of silver weighs about 1 part of a milligramme. A bead 0.02 mm. in diameter weighs about 1/24,000 mg., and a close approximation can be made to its weight. It is desirable that the lead used in the assay should be low in silver so as to avoid large correction, but as the parted

This paper presents a computer method to obtain the shape factors and equal cell volumes of the channels for any well spacing pattern from a potentiometric model. By using this program the authors have processed the data for the seven-spot, direct line-drive and the staggered line-drive patterns. The data for the five-spot pattern had been previously processed by a noncomputer method and are included for completeness. The shape factors and volumes for the channels are presented in tables for those who want to use them to process data using their own permeability relationships and viscosities of their reservoir oils. The authors have used the data and sets of representative permeability curves to process sample calculationr of waterflood performances. The comparison of the calculated results shows that the influence of well spacing is small. The permeabilities of the reservoir rock to oil and water had a greater influence on oil recovery for a given pore-volume throughput of water than the well spacing pattern. The more water-wet the reservoir rock, the better the possibility of permeabilities which are conducive to good recovery. The viscosity of the reservoir oil also influences the recovery more than the well spacing pattern. The reduction in the percentage recovery of oil with increase in viscosity of the reservoir oils is small when oil viscosities are in the range of 0.1 to 3. Above this range the reductions in recoveries are extensive. Sample comparisons of the time required for different patterns to recover the oil are presented. Results of an example calculation are given to show the effect of the permeability profile on recovery. INTRODUCTION The effect of well spacing pattern on the recovery of oil when flooding with either gas or water has been studied by many investigators. Muskat et al.1 presented an analysis using conductivity, sweep efficiency and unit mobility to the time of breakthrough. Dyes et al.2 used experimental techniques (X-ray shadowgraphs) and different mobility ratios. They presented quantitatively the relationship between mobility and sweep efficiency at and after breakthrough. Hauber3 presented a method to predict waterflood performance for arbitrary well spacing patterns and mobility ratios. Craig et al.,4 using techniques similar to Dyes et al. to determine sweep efficiency for a five-spot pattern, added the use of relative permeability curves at breakthrough and thereafter. Douglas et al.5 sed rela- tive permeabilities and continuously changing saturations throughout the entire five-spot flood pattern. In obtaining their solutions they used finite-difierence equations. Hig-gins and Leighton6,7 also used relative permeabilities and continuously changing saturations throughout the pattern before and after breakthrough. They employed techniques that process a flood-pattern calculation on the computer in about one minute. The methods of Douglas et al. and Higgins and Leighton both checked closely the laboratory results for a wide range of mobility ratios. This paper presents some sample performances calculated by the Higgins and Leighton method that show the effect on recovery of different permeabilities and viscosities using the seven-spot, the line-drive and the staggered line-drive, as well as the fivespot flood pattern. No previous paper has presented these data using different permeability curves and continuously changing saturations throughout the flood patterns. The paper also presents (1) the results and analyses of the flood-pattern prediction, (2) the computer techniques for determining the shape factors and volumes from the potentiometric models for the foregoing flood patterns, and (3) the shape factors and volumes of the channels of the flood pattern in the event reservoir engineers may like to process waterflood calculations using their own permeability curves and reservoir oils. DESCRIPTION OF METHOD VOLUMES AND SHAPE FACTORS The use of channels taken from a potentiometric model (see Fig. 1) to aid in calculating the performances of water floods of nonlinear patterns has been thoroughly explained in the literature.0,7 Therefore, very little theory, discussion, or proof regarding this phase will be repeated in this paper. The computer method presented in this paper to calculate the volumes and the shape factors of the channels of potentiometric models employs the trapezoidal rule for the volumes and the Pythagorean theorem (the hypotenuse equals the square root of the sum of the squares of the two sides of a right triangle) for the shape factors. In calculating the volume of a channel, the area of each cell in the channel is determined and then multiplied by the thickness to obtain the volume. In determining the areas of the cells, trapezoids are constructed whose vertical sides are spaced Ax apart, as shown in Fig. 2. The length of the sides is the difference between an ordinate cut off by the top and bottom of the cell — usually equipo-tentials. The coordinates of the points along an equipo-tential or streamline are obtained by Lagrange's8 equation of interpolation for which the constants are coordinate points at the intersections. THE Pittsburg coal field in western Pennsylvania, is conceded to be the most important in the world. To measure its importance it is necessary to understand the extent of its service in the various industries of the country. Probably 90 per cent. of the pig iron manufactured in the United States up to the present time has been made by using coke manufactured from the Pittsburg coal seam in western Pennsylvania. This coal field is the foundation on which the city of Pittsburg rests and is the reason for the great growth of the iron industry in the Pittsburg district. Iron ore is brought to this district, not because Pittsburgh is a. natural location, over other locations, for the iron and steel industry-as its position places the manufacturer at the mercy of the railroads-but the ore is brought 1,100 miles to meet the fuel. It can be said that the illuminating-gas industry in the United States has used this coal exclusively to the same extent that the pig-iron maker has used it. It may be also said that 20 to 25 per cent. of the fuel used on railroads in the United States conies from this coal field. The Pittsburg coal field is unquestionably the center of the industrial population of the United States, for in addition to the industries of the district and those closely adjoining, it has tributary to it all the cities and industries along the Great Lakes and practically all of Canada with the exception of the extreme western and eastern ends. It supplies the industries and population west of Duluth and Superior many hundreds of miles. This coal is floated down the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, supplying the towns en route, and is delivered in New Orleans, a distance of 2,200 miles, for approximately SO to 90 c. per ton transportation cost. It is delivered on the docks of Superior and Duluth at a cost of transportation 50 c. a ton less than the cost of transporting the same coal from Pittsburg to a local consumer in Philadelphia. With other Appalachian coals it has large markets east and along the seaboard, especially for byproduct-coke making and the illuminating-gas industry. It is considered the premier railroad fuel of the world on account of the fact that this coal in a given-sized locomotive will probably haul more cars than any other coal in the

INE operators have a choice of several classi- fications of mechanical loaders. Within each classification there are many types and makes available. Table I lists loaders on which manufacturing data as to operating characteristics are available. This paper discusses the conditions met in a mine as they affect these characteristics. It is assumed that management will provide satisfactory engineering, supervision, power, maintenance, loader service within a concentration of workings, and a balanced working cycle served by balanced production equipment. These are factors which affect the optimum operational efficiency of a loader. The conditions which determine loader choice are: Height of Vein—The main limitation to the use of a loading machine is the height to which the vein is mined; i.e. a loader cannot be higher than the place in which it is to work unless rock is taken. Since there are several low vein loaders being developed and successfully applied, this does not appear to be a requisite of an efficient mining operation. The maximum useable height of a loader should be equal to the working seam thickness less a working clearance for travel and operation. A—Working seam thickness = B—Artificial roof support thickness = C—Safe headroom below support = (generally about 6 in.) D—Height of roadway = E—Total of B + C f D =_______________________ A—E = maximum loader height F—Distance from top of roadway to bottom of roof support = G—-Height of loader's coal or ore line (see Table I) = H—Difference between F and G = Size of largest broken particle + a safety factor of 2 to 3 in. H is a loadability factor and is important because the clearance over the top of the conveyor chain to the roof or roof support must be greater than the largest broken particle or else the particle and/or the conveyor chain may be broken. From this standpoint it might be desirable to use a lower height machine even though it may have a smaller capacity, though this is warranted only when increased lump realization offsets lower man-day and machine pro- duction rates. Ivan Given has stated, "Loading should not be handicapped by securing lump only to grind it in the breaker." Width of Working Place—The width of a working place is the greatest width a place may be safely driven. The working place includes not only the face but the roads the loader must tram when mucking out more than one face. The width is limited by the system of placing props with sufficient room between them for the machine runner (about 2 ft). Maximum width of place in which the loader will operate at maximum efficiency is determined by the type of mounting. With track-mounted loaders, maximum width of place is determined by maximum angular swing of the loading head and proximity of track to the face. The use of double track leads to added expense and operational complexities. Several mines that have used double-track systems have found that a substantial saving is made by the use of machines that load out wider places. Trackless loaders may work in rooms of any maximum width. Minimum width of place in which a loader will operate is determined by width of the loader plus a safe movement area for the operator. Often a barodynamic study of the mine will show that either an increase in room width and/or a change in the system of propping may be made by using roof bolting, full or part-width room timbers, removable aluminum I-beams at the face, etc. Increasing the width of a working place will, in general, increase loader operating efficiency by providing more material per fall and by decreasing the preparation and moving time per ton. A change in the system of propping that would increase the minimum width might permit the use of a higher capacity loader with safer working conditions. Proper face tirnbering is necessary to insure safety from roof falls and because the speed of preparation and loading generally increases since the men work with greater assurance and there is less chance of kicking out posts. Results of laboratory tests are presented to show that lire value of "m", in the Archie expression dernlined by the shapes of the particles in the system. Tile value of m "the shape factor", is constant for a system of particles of a given shape for a range of F - + values. Applying this concept, one can predict F - + relationships for mixtures of particles with different shapes, and these predicted relationships are useful in electric log interpretation. It is suggested that an equation of the form 1/F -10mcan be used to describe the properties of natural formations containing varying amounts of sand and clay. From this work and values of "a" and "m" reported in the literature, it appears that in many cases rocks in the same geological horizon have a common primary porosity but contain varying amounts of a particular clay. It is concluded that the equation can be applied to a rock-water system only when values of "a" and "m" have been established for the particular system. INTRODUCTION The petroleum literature contains many reports of the results obtained by determining formation resistivity factor F and porosity + of rock samples from oil fields all over the world. The usual practice is to use data from a large number of samples from a number of fields to find an average relationship between F and +. Several such average relationships have been advanced. In the absence of data on a particular formation or field, it has been the practice to use the average relationships to give a rough approximation of the F - + relationship. The purpose of this paper is to report on basic relationships that exist between F and + for naturally occurring particles in water solutions. Other workers' have found the same relationships apply to the diffusion of hydrogen through packed beds of dry particles. In the work discussed here, relationships for application to unconsolidated sands or shales containing mix- tures of particle shapes are derived. These relationships, developed for unconsolidated formations, may apply to consolidated formations. EXPERIMENTAL To evaluate F- relationships for unconsolidated rocks, the results of laboratory measurements on simple slurries of clay or sand will be used. Such laboratory studies are concerned with the electrical behavior of water-containing rocks. The wet rock constituents are electrically similar in slurries and in rocks. Archie2 defined formation resistivity factor as All resistance measurements were made using a 1,000-cycle impedance bridge with an oscilloscope as the null detector." During the two years in which the new reduction-works of the Copper Queen Consolidated Mining Co. have been in operation at Douglas, Ariz., there has developed a remarkable condition in regard to the corrosive action of the water used to cool the jackets of the blast-furnaces. Were it not for the many contradictory features, it might pass as one of the unavoidable troubles due to the composition of the water. This water, obtained from wells 600 ft. deep, is also used in the steam-boilers, and its composition, as shown by the following analysis, does not indicate the presence of any ingredient which would explain the corrosion: Grains Per U. In from 10 to 12 months the inner plates have been reduced by corrosion to a thickness of from + to & in., while the outer plate in the same time is reduced by less than 1/16 in., and the stiffeners show very little corrosion. The plates are pitted and eaten away in some places more than in others. There is practically no scale found on the jackets, but when cleaned considerable iron oxide is found in the bottoms. TOP-SLICING was introduced in the Pachuca district in 1917 by T. C. Baker, at that time mine superintendent, of the Santa Gertrudis mine. There then existed 1200 ft. (365.7 m.) below the surface, lying between the fourteenth and eighteenth levels (a vertical distance of 108 meters) a block of ore having a length of 295 ft. (90 m.), and an average width of 82 ft. (25 m.) and dipping at an angle of 65°. This block lay in the hanging wall of the vein and consisted of highly altered and fractured andesite, cut through with mineralized quartz stringers. On the foot-wall side, 26 ft. (8 m.) of old filling, left by former operators, was of payable grade. Stoping therein was first undertaken by the square-set filling system, but because of the extremely heavy hanging wall and loose dry filling in the foot wall, all square setting had to be accompanied by spiling, which made the operation exceedingly slow and costly. A system of mining was sought that would eliminate the difficulties inherent to the square-set system in heavy ground and that at the same time would effect the desired economies in mining. After several years, top-slicing has met all the conditions most satisfactorily, so that when similar conditions presented themselves in El Bordo mine, this method was adopted with necessary modifications. El Bordo mine is operated by the Santa Gertrudis company, and is situated about two miles north of Pachuca. Because of the diversity of the orebodies, a number of different mining methods are in use, among them top-slicing.

This paper presents some of the results obtained during the field season of 1919 while mapping, in detail, the stratigraphy of the Gogebic Range in Wisconsin. The detailed stratigraphic section for the range was first published, in 1919, by W. 0. Hotchkiss,1 State Gcologist of Wisconsin. The idea of the continuity of the definite succession thus established was the result of underground work in the productive part of the range in Michigan and Wisconsin, where most of the required data also were obtained. The bulk of the range in Wisconsin is heavily covered by drift; in fact, there is but one satisfactorily exposed section across the entire formation, few partial sections, and only scanty outcrops of any size. Evidently mapping of the detailed members of the formation could only be established at a few points; and if from these small areas the .unexposed portions were to be mapped by projection, the only apparent method for projection was straight-line interpolation modified or supported by data from the scanty outcrops and from test workings. It was found that by tracing a magnetic line, the position of which in the formation may be determined from test pits and outcrops, the projection of that member through the drift-covered areas can be accomplished. The magnetic line serves as a datum horizon within the formation to which reference may be made in correlating outcrops and ledge matter thrown from test workings. The foot wall is easily located also, and from the two datum horizons thus available and the known proportional thickness of the several members in the type sections, outcrops and artificially exposed ledges can be correlated by lithological characteristics. As a result, the tracing of magnetic lines became the basis of our work on the stratigraphy and we were able to carry the mapping of detailed members throughout the length of the range. It was found that the magnetic horizon at the base of the Tyler slate was most easily followed by the dip needle; that discontinuity caused by cross-faulting could be established; that folding along the strike could be detected in a repetition

The purpose of this paper is to start a discussion on: (I) methods of supporting the immediate roof, particularly of local areas of poor roof, during the mechanical loading of coal; (2) methods of increasing the rapidity of the movement of the mining faces so that, without the use of cribs, jacks, park walls, and filling, there will be no danger to men, equipment, and working places from the subsidence of the overlying strata. In the Pittsburgh district the application of mechanical loading devices in mines working in the Pittsburgh seam has been retarded by the difficulties of holding and handling the draw slate. Normally the thickness of this slate averages about 8 in. but the hardness varies, and a cut of coal cannot always be loaded without placing posts or crossbars to support the slate. Locally, the slate may be thicker and special methods of support may be required. If crossbars are placed to hold the slate when the coal averages 5 ft. in thickness, the standard methods of transporting the coal cannot be followed, and the use of conveyors may be desirable. Very little information is available on the effect of increasing the rate of movement of advancing or retreating break lines or longwall faces. A few British publications have presented some data but all such data relate to longwall faces that have moved not more than 6 ft. a day. The most rapid rate of movemerit of longwall faces in Germany is 6 ft. per day. In the ordinary hand-loading mine in western Pennsylvania break lines on full retreat will move about 2 ft. per day. If loading machines are used under similar conditions the rate of retreat may reach 4 ft. per day. In a mine where coal is loaded by hand on conveyors three shifts per day, the rate of retreat has ranged from 11 to 16 ft. per day, with an average of 13 ft. The purpose of this paper is to start a discussion on: (I) methods of supporting the immediate roof, particularly of local areas of poor roof, during the mechanical loading of coal; (2) methods of increasing the rapidity of the movement of the mining faces so that, without the use of cribs, jacks, park walls, and filling, there will be no danger to men, equipment, and working places from the subsidence of the overlying strata. In the Pittsburgh district the application of mechanical loading devices in mines working in the Pittsburgh seam has been retarded by the difficulties of holding and handling the draw slate. Normally the thickness of this slate averages about 8 in. but the hardness varies, and a cut of coal cannot always be loaded without placing posts or crossbars to support the slate. Locally, the slate may be thicker and special methods of support may be required. If crossbars are placed to hold the slate when the coal averages 5 ft. in thickness, the standard methods of transporting the coal cannot be followed, and the use of conveyors may be desirable. Very little information is available on the effect of increasing the rate of movement of advancing or retreating break lines or longwall faces. A few British publications have presented some data but all such data relate to longwall faces that have moved not more than 6 ft. a day. The most rapid rate of movemerit of longwall faces in Germany is 6 ft. per day. In the ordinary hand-loading mine in western Pennsylvania break lines on full retreat will move about 2 ft. per day. If loading machines are used under similar conditions the rate of retreat may reach 4 ft. per day. In a mine where coal is loaded by hand on conveyors three shifts per day, the rate of retreat has ranged from 11 to 16 ft. per day, with an average of 13 ft. Retreat mining, using yielding steel friction props, over a 7-year period has been successful at a uranium mine operated by Hecla Mining Co. in southeast Utah. The support system allows good roof control, maximum profit, complete extraction, and good ventilation. Unusual subsidence observations were made in that some of the surface was raised rather than lowered. Longwall mining, commonly practiced in European coal mines, has a potential of broader application because of mechanization possibilities and better roof control and ventilation at greater depths. The Radon mine was one of the first American metal mines to use yielding steel props for supporting the relaxed core of the pressure arch which is induced by retreating longwall mining. Full caving was induced. After more than 7 years of stoping experience, the method has proved very satisfactory for the conditions encountered. The mine and method have been described in references listed in the bibliography. U.S. Bureau of Mines Information Circular 8004 by Wilbert Dare and Philip Lindstrom gives the most information. Stoping experience at this mine indicates that there are many advantages to be gained by using yielding supports; such as in safety, timber cost, roof control, ventilation, ore dilution, and low cost per pound of metal produced. Subsidence measurements show that the surface will rise rather than slump in some areas over the mine. This appears to be an unusual observation and is presented as a new development in subsidence studies. The Radon mine is located 35 miles southeast of Moab, Utah in the north end of the Big Indian mining district in San Juan County. Hecla Mining Co. operated the mine from early 1955 to early 1964 through an operating agreement with Federal Resources, Inc. Development consisted of a 3-compartment, 690-ft shaft, 4 main levels driven on the ore horizon and a haulage level below the ore. Evaluation of physical and economic factors showed that this flat-dipping ore occurrence could be mined by a low-cost coal mining method. The value of the deposit was high and unusual premiums were possible by clean mining. THE kaolins of the southeastern United States were known to civilization as early as the latter part of the eighteenth century-and yet the [ ] commercial history of Georgia kaolins may be said to begin in the year 1900. The U. S. Bureau of Mines reported for that year a production of 6885 tons of "miscellaneous" clays in Georgia. A comparison of these figures with those of 1934, when the production rose to 284,556 tons (65 per cent of the domestic production), indicates the growing economic and technologic importance of this raw material. Fig. 1 clearly shows that a part of the increase is due to a normal growth in the use of kaolinitic clays and a part is due to replacement of clays formerly imported. I would like to discuss some of the points of agreement as well as some of disagreement and then present some unpublished data as a contribution to the work on textures. Firstly, there is agreement on the components produced during a 70 pct cold-rolling reduction of a (110) [001 ] single crystal; there is agreement on the forma- tion of a (110) [001] recrystallization texture provided recrystallization occurs at 800°C or higher; and there is agreement on the formation of (120) [001] components provided recrystallization occurs below 600°C. There is some disagreement on the low-temperature recrystallization since I also obtained a substantial amount of a (110) [001] component while the author obtained only (120) [001] components. We should like to point out that a similar idea was put forward by Friedel8 in his book on the subject of lattice merohedrism "merihedrie réticulaire:"—When two crystals A and B are twinned with respect to a mirror plane, there exists a common superlattice, "réseau periode," which is independent of the contact surface between the two crystals. The volume V of this superlattice is a simple multiple of the volume v of the lattice of crystals A, or B, (Fig. 5). This "multiple cell" is defined by the twin plane (p q r) and a row of atoms [h k l] normal to this plane, the base being taken as the smallest unit (two-dimensional) of this plane. Two cases must be considered. First when the multiple cell, as defined, has no atom site at its center nor at the center of its faces other than (p q r), v the twinning index is defined by —. In the second v case, when one of the two above conditions does not v apply, then the twinning index is V 2v A more intuitive definition of the twinning index would be the proportion of atoms of C, which would coincide with those of C1 when the C, lattice is imagined to extend on the other side of the contact surface.
