The production of oil in the Rocky Mountain district, including southeastern New Mexico, increased from 33,048,630 bbl. in 1930 to 34,325,163 bbl. in 1931. This increase was due to production in New Mexico, which exceeded the 1930 figure by approximately 5,000,000 barrels. Total production by fields is given in Table 1. Exploration during 1931 resulted in the discovery of a new oil-producing horizon in the Big Muddy field in Natrona County, Wyoming, and ' the discovery of a new gas pool in the Powder Wash structure, Moffat County, northwestern Colorado. Gas was discovered also in the Frontier sands of the Bunker Hill dome, Carbon County, Wyoming, but no test has yet been made by which to determine the significance of this discovery. All other exploration which resulted in increasing the known reserves of oil and gas in the district was confined to drilling in partly outlined fields where known limits of production were extended. During the year two major gas pipe lines were completed in western Montana, and one in southwestern New Mexico was extended into Arizona. One new project involving the marketing of natural gas from Wyoming fields included the conversion of an existing oil line to a gas line to serve towns in southeastern Wyoming and western Nebraska. Colorado The decline of 132,501 bbl. in the production of oil in the Colorado fields during 1931 from the figure of 1930 is due to the natural decline of existing wells, partly offset by the increased production in the Greasewood area. New exploration was limited largely to northeastern Colorado, where attempts were made to find oil in areas adjacent to the Grease-wood field. Powder Wash, Moffat County.—The Ohio Oil Co. is to be credited with the discovery of a gas field in the Power Wash structure in Moffat County, Colorado. The initial well drilled in sec. 5-11-97 encountered a sand at a depth of 2152 ft. which produced 34,188,000 cu. ft. of gas on an open-flow test. The rock pressure was reported as 630 Ib.

Accuracy and computational speed were the main considerations in selecting the numerical method and Propagation criteria used to model the growing crack. Some results regarding the stresses and displacements around a two-dimensional crack of arbitrary geometry are discussed.

Increasing acceptance of perlite products, chiefly in the fields of lightweight structural aggregates and thermal and acoustic insulation, has led to expanding market demands that have encouraged many new producers to enter the field. In some instances, however, the failure of these producers to anticipate the variable response of perlite to conventional processing methods has led to difficulty in establishing an economical flowsheet by which a predictable specification product could be obtained. It is not the writer's intent to provide a solution to these problems, but rather to summarize their nature. It is to be hoped that members of the industry who have hurdled some of these obstacles will document solutions arising from their experience.

THE purpose of this paper is to present the data and some interpretation of the results of a laboratory study of the reduction of iron ore and the deposition of carbon from the reducing gas mixtures in such reductions. One major object of the study was to determine the effect of gas pressures on these chemical processes. Effort was made to approximate the conditions of temperature, gas composition, linear and mass gas velocities, pressure range, and extent of reduction prevailing in commercial blast furnaces. The results show that the reduction of Fe203 proceeds by two steps, largely consecutive under the conditions used herein: reduction of Fe203 to FeO, and reduction Of FeO to Fe. Unless the gas has a CO/CO2 ratio greater than 2.1 only the first step occurs under these conditions (850°C) but the following generalizations apply to either step or to the combination. The rate of reduction of relatively fine ore particles at any time is proportional to the mass rate of supply of CO (provided some of it is thermodynamically available) the rate therefore is proportional to the linear velocity at constant pressure, or to the pressure at constant linear velocity. Thus, the rate of reduction may be increased without increase in linear velocity f the reducing gas by increasing the mass velocity of the gas and increasing the pressure correspondingly to avoid any increase in the linear velocity. The rate "constants"-i.e., the efficiency of conversion of the "available" CO supplied-is not actually constant but decreases as the reduction proceeds, and is a function only of the state of the ore; i.e., of the amount of reduction already accomplished and hence of the amount of CO passed. The particle size Of ore used in nearly all the experiments was relatively small (8 to 14-mesh). The rate of reduction in run 16 with 3 to 8-mesh ore particles is within experimental error the same as with the finer ore. Although this would indicate an absence of effect due to particle size in this range of ore particles, it is desirable to have more data on other ore sizes and on ore of different densities before arriving at any generalizations on this point. Although it is possible to extend the analysis of these results to consideration of the more detailed kinetics and mechanism of iron oxide reduction, such extension is beyond the scope of the present paper. From the experiments on carbon deposition, it was evident that if carbon deposition is increased at all by the application of pressures up to 10 psi ga., such increase appears to be less than the experimental and analytical error. I refer to the Wilfley table. You youngsters that came into the game only 30 years ago or even more recently, with flotation machines and reagents as your very ready tool in time of trouble, do not realize what the invention of the Wilfley table meant to us. We had but one physical property of ores to reckon with-specific gravity- and when there was but little difference in specific gravity between the mineral and the gangue, we were in trouble. The jig and the revolving table were our only mechanical equipment for recovering values and so that we might make even a reasonably satisfactory extraction, we had to classify and reclassify, and jig and rejig, and worry about the laws and advantages of free settling vs hindered settling and just tire the minerals out.

Solid-solubility limits at 1500°, l000q and 500°C for carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen in high-purity tantalum were determined by X-ray lattice-parameter methods. For carbon, the solubility was found to be 0.17 at. pct at 1500°C, and less than 0.07 at. pct at 1000°C. A nitrogen solubility of 3.70 at. pct at 1500° C decreases linearly with temperature to 2.75 at. pct at 1000°C, and 1.8 at. pct at 500°C. In the case of oxygen, the solubility was found to be 3.65 at. pct at 1500°C, 2.95 at. pct at 1000°C, and 2.5 at. pct at 500°C. The phases Ta2C, the low-temperature modification of Ta205, and Ta,N of unknown composition but which has a superlattice structure based upon the original bcc tantalum lattice have been identified as the initial precipitates in the respective systems. Metallographic methods were employed to verify the X-ray analyses. The etching behavior of Ta is discussed in terms of lattice i?rzperfections and precipitate phases. The excellent fabricability, high melting point, and nuclear properties of tantalum are responsible for interest in this refractory metal. Data on the solid solubility of the interstitial elements (oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon) in tantalum and on the precipitate phases are somewhat limited. The significant contributions are discussed below. Because the purity of electron-beam melted tantalum (only recently available) is considerably higher than that used in previous studies, the present investigation was initiated. Gebhardt et all-3 have investigated the tantalum-oxygen and tantalum-nitrogen systems with particular reference to the changes in physical properties and to the rates of reaction between these gases and the metal. The solubility of oxygen in tantalum was reported2 to be 3.7 at. pet at 1500°, 2.3 at. pet at 100O°C, and 1.4 at. pct at 750°C. Schonberg4 reported that several oxide phases (Ta40, Ta,O, TaO and Ta,05) exist while X-ray studies by Gebhardtl showed only two oxides, Ta,05 and an unidentified phase which was associated with a platelet-type precipitate. La-gergren and Magneli,' however, questioned the existence of compounds other than the two allotropic modifications of Ta,05 for the tantalum-oxygen system. In the case of nitrogen, the solubility was estab- lished by Gebhardt3 to be of the order of 7 at. pct at 1800°c. The solubility was reported to decrease rapidly with temperature, and, although no limits were established, a precipitate phase was observed by Gebhardt except when the high-nitrogen specimens were cooled very rapidly from the reaction temperature of 1800c. He reported the initial precipitate phase to be a tetragonal distortion of the bcc tantalum lattice while Schonberg6 reported the phase lowest in nitrogen Jo be a cubic super-lattice with a cell size of 10.11 A. Two other nitride phases, Ta,N and TaN, were reported; these appear to be isomor-phous with the carbides of tantalum. The tantalum-carbon system was investigated by Ellinger7 and by Lesser and Braurer. Two compounds, Ta,C and TaC, were reported to exist, each with a range of composition. The solubility of carbon in tantalum was found to be practically nil at all temperatures. Thus, of the interstitial elements which are present in small amounts in high-purity tantalum, carbon might be expected to form precipitates. The present investigation was initiated to obtain additional data on the solid-solubility limits of these interstitials at 1500°, 1000°, and 500' with particular emphasis on the distribution and the identification of the precipitate phases. EXPERIMENTAL WORK AND RESULTS In the present investigations of the solid solubility and of the precipitate phases in the systems tantalum-nitrogen, -oxygen, and -carbon, high-purity tantalum was reacted with high-purity gases, homogenized at 1800°c, and annealed at and quenched from 1500°, 1000,

The frontal-advance equation can determine how the fluid withdrawal rate and subsurface operating pressure influence oil recovery from pressure-maintained reservoirs having characteristics favorable for efficient vertical segregation. For effective vertical segregation in formations having low dip angles, the requirements are: thick, massive sands, low viscosity oil and high vertical permeability with few discontinuous shale members. This approach has been successfully applied to the LL-370, which is a massive Eocene sandstone reservoir containing crude with an average gravity of 26" APT, a dip of only 3" and vertical permeability of ½ darcy. The average gas cap saturation was calculated for various rates of vertical gas-oil contact movement corresponding to a wide range of reservoir producing rates. This method also evaluated the effect of different pressure maintenance levels on oil recovery. Applicability of this procedure for calculating the present oil saturation in the LL-370 gas cap has been substantiated from field performance, where the oil saturation was computed by comparing oil recovery with the gas cap volume vacated. INTRODUCTION During the natural depletion history of the LL-370 reservoir, located in Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela, excellent vertical segregation resulted in the formation of a thin gas zone over a substantial portion of the oil-productive area. Subsequently, gas injection forced this thin gas-saturated zone slowly downward, reducing the oil saturation in the gas cap to a low value. The oil recovery has been raised considerably above earlier predictions where vertical segregation effects were under-estimated. In order to determine the maximum efficient producing rate and optimum operating pressure for this reservoir, a vertical gas frontal-advance analysis has been made through application of the fractional flow equation. LL-370 RESERVOIR CHARACTERISTICS The reservoir consists of a truncated monocline of massive. highly-permeable Eocene sandstone, called the B-b formation, covering an area of more than 13,500 acres. The original oil in place was 2.17 billion STB. Internal non-sealing faults subdivide the structure into four blocks called the B-6-x.6, 10, 11 and 13, which are effectively bounded by major faulting on the flanks, an unconformity updip to the west, and an immobile aquifer to the southeast. The producing formation occurs at an average depth of 5,250 ft subsea and has a closure of more than 1,500 ft. A typical producing section has a net oil sand thickness of 170 ft. Scattered throughout the section are a few randomly-positioned shale lenses which increase in thickness and areal extent downdip. The reservoir rock and fluid properties vary with depth. The permeability and produced oil gravity are 1600 md and 28" API at the top, compared to 300 md and 18° API at the water-oil contact. The productivity of updip wells is, therefore, much higher than the reservoir average. The reservoir oil was originally saturated at the crest, grading to a slight degree of undersaturation at the water-oil contact. There was no original gas cap; and material balance and the field performance indicate no water influx. Except for the northern B-6-x.6 block, the fluid and rock properties have already been published.' Average LL-370 reservoir properties are shown in Table 1. Introduction. THE Georgetown mining district is located in Deerlodge county, Mont., about 20 miles west of Anaconda. It lies along the divide between the headwaters of Warm Springs creek, draining eastward, and Flint creek, flowing west and north through the Philipsburg valley. The actual divide is formed by Cable mountain, a narrow ridge running north and south, terminating to the south in low hills overlooking Georgetown lake, and to the north in a high, rugged plateau that falls off to the west to the wide valley of Flint creek. Oil the eastern, or Warm Springs, slope of Cable mountain is the Cable mine, with the Hidden Lake mine a few miles north. On the western slope is the Southern Cross group, with smaller mines, the Twilight, Cincinnati, Red Lion, and Big Bill, at intervals to the northward. The Georgetown mines lie in the hills south of Cable mountain; the Philipsburg mines, of which the Granite Mountain, Bimetallic, Hope, and Trout are the chief, form a separate group to the north, overlooking Flint Creek valley and Philipsburg. (See Fig. 1.1) The region ranges in elevation from 5,000 to 9,000 ft. It is, with the exception of the lower valleys, well timbered with small fir and pine, although Cable mountain and the higher summits to the northward rise slightly above timber line. The main valleys have the smooth contours of glaciation, and their mouths are frequently choked with morainal deposits.

Theory, operational characteristics, and indicated precision and accuracy of analytical methods based on vacuum extraction, equilibrium pressure, and combustion approaches are reviewed. At the present time vacuum extraction at 1400°C and the equilibrium pressure method are recommended for determination of hydrogen in titanium and titanium-rich alloys. UNTIL a few years ago the role of hydrogen in titanium was an unknown factor with regard to its effect on the physical and mechanical properties of the metal. However, following the work of Jaffee and othersa-" it is now generally acknowledged that hydrogen has a degrading effect on titanium and its alloys. The chief manifestations are a decrease in impact strength in -systems and delayed cracking in a-ß systems. Since hydrogen does have a de- grading effect on titanium it is essential to control it within tolerable limits. It then follows that procedures for quantitative estimation of hydrogen are a primary requirement for the industry. For greatest benefit these methods should be simple, rapid, and precise. In addition to having these virtues, methods must be easy to duplicate in both equipment and technique to gain widespread use. After inherent accuracy has been established, the, required precision to make a method acceptable is dependent largely on the nature of the work at hand. The emission of firedamp from the strata surrounding active workings of longwall coal faces normally follows a cyclic pattern associated with the mining operations being carried out on the face. Mining a coal seam disturbs the uniform distribution of overburden weight such that the working is enveloped by a region of high stress, both above and below the seam, advancing with the coal face. There is a decrease in stress as the strata is relaxed following the passage of the face (1). The paper describes experimental results obtained during the initial investigations of a study intended to examine the permeability of samples of coal measure strata under various triaxial stress conditions. Several investigators have studied the effect of stress on the permeability of rock, usually in the field of oil reservoir engineering. Two general lines of approach are evident. One used by among others Fatt and Davies (2), McLatchie et a1 (31, Brace et al (4) and Gunther (5) was to subject a rock sample to hydrostatic pressure. Gas or water would be passed through a sealed core mounted inside a high pressure hydraulic bomb. The second approach, favoured by Wilhelmi and Somerton (6) and also by Gray et a1 (7) was to employ a so-called 'triaxial' state of stress. Here radial confining pressure and axial stress are applied independently. The permeability is measured in the direction of the axial load. With the exception of Gunther who tested coals and Brace et a1 who tested a granite, the rocks used have been sandstones with permeabilities generally appreciably higher than British coal measure rocks.

THE. years 1901, 1910, and 1924 may be considered as the beginning of new eras in the history of the oil industry of the Gulf Coast of Texas and Louisiana. Spindletop, in 1901, with its enormous cap-rock production revealed the possibilities of the salt domes. The lateral sand development at Vinton, in 1910, renewed interest in the then known domes which were non-producing, or were producing from the cap rock or from sands above the cap rock. The discovery of three domes, Nash, Orchard and Long Point, in the year 1924, by means of the torsion balance and the seismograph, is the beginning of intensive explorations of the Gulf coastal plain by geophysical methods. Domes other than those mentioned have no doubt been found during the last few months of the year but tests have not been drilled to confirm the evidence of the instruments. DISCOVERY OF DOMES BY GEOPHYSICAL METHODS The Rycade Oil Corpn. operated the first torsion balance on the Gulf Coast in October, 1922, and the Roxana Petroleum Corpn. brought in one of these instruments and began work in December, 1922. The U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey made some gravity observations at Damon Mound, in 1923, with a pendulum apparatus. In March, 1924, the Marland Oil Co. placed the first seismograph on the Gulf Coast and the Gulf Production Co. followed with one in May. In June, 1924, the Gulf Production Co. began operations with a torsion balance. The Atlantic Oil Producing Co., The Texas Co., and others have experimented with several types of instruments involving various principles. During the next few years, a great advance in geophysical methods may be expected, especially if one of the newly discovered domes should be productive. The first dome discovered was the Nash, in Fort Bend County, Tex., about 6 mi. east of Damon Mound. A slight elevation and two shallow wells containing sulfurous waters made the locality somewhat interesting from the standpoint of surface indications, and the torsion-balance measurements indicated the presence of a dome. On July 20, 1924, the Rycade Oil Corpn. No. 1 Wisdom encountered lime at a depth of 634 ft. and anhydrite at 639 ft. The hole was abandoned on Sept. 8, 1924, at 769 ft. in anhydrite. A cavity in the anhydrite caused much delay and the final abandonment of this test.

May I emphasize that this session is separate from the rest of the program; there is no registration fee; and I want to urge all of you, especially those in this vicinity, to bring your assistants to this meeting. As a part of a USBM-ASARCO cooperative rock-burst research program, a burstprone stope pillar at the Galena mine was successfully destressed. Destressing was accomplished by blasting a single line of long holes in the footwall of the vein. As a result of destressing, the pillar was fractured and softened; hence it yielded, releasing a large amount of stored elastic strain energy nonviolently. In addition, the high stress in the pillar was shifted out around the stope walls and in the sandfill. Both broad-band microseismic monitoring and seismic velocity surveys were used to evaluate the destressing test. The mechanics of destressing were determined by finite element computer model studies of destressing. Results of the field destressing test agreed remarkably well with the predicted results from the computer model.

Dimitri Kececioglu (Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co., Milwaukee)—The idea of applying metal cutting theory to comminution and vice versa is very impressive. Among others, the demarcation of wheel-grinding data into two regions, namely Kick's and Rittinger's, draws attention here. A study of Figs. 6 to 9 shows the following: In Fig. 6, 1 point out of 8; in Fig. 7, 4 points out of 26; in Fig. 8 only 1 point out of 13; and in Fig. 9 practically none out of 13 points fall out of curve No. 2. Also when grinding particles smaller than 5x10." in. it is difficult to measure very accurately the grinding forces, chip geometry, and particle size. In view of the above it would be difficult to make a positive and distinct demarcation of the Wheel-grinding data into two regions, namely, Kick's and Rittinger's. The idea of using machine grinding to determine the comminution properties of materials is indeed unique. The following cautions come to mind, however, regarding applicability of machine grinding data to comminution: 1—Grinding gives uniform particle size, whereas comminution gives a variety of particle sizes in the same process. The fact that grinding gives uniform particle size is not necessarily an advantage because in comminution the overall energy under actual comminution is desired and comminution invariably results in the production of a variety of particle sizes. 2—In grinding, a small particle is ground off a comparatively large surface. In comminution small bodies are broken down to smaller bodies. This makes it difficult to establish a concept of reduction ratio in machine grinding. 3—The mechanics of machine grinding involve direct shearing action under very high strain and comparatively high compression at the shear zone, whereas: comminution involves direct dynamic compression and surface friction with comparatively little strain and shear. Consequently the mechanics of machine grinding appear to be different from those involved in comminution. Hence one might arrive at erroneous con- clusions when comminution characteristics are eval-uated from machine grinding results. It is noticed also that functions other 'than Eq. 16 which do not involve the concept of direct proportionality of useful energy input to new surface area created (Eq. 2 and particularly Eq. 12) may be derived to fit the, data of curve No. 2. One such relationship may be u = ct-", where c is a positive constant and n is a positive constant less than unity. This, of course, is made possible because data of a very small range. of particle size are being fitted by the curves of No. 2 and the hereby suggested relationship. A sound comminution theory should be applicable to a relatively large range of particle size. George B. Clark (Department of Mining Engineering, University of Illinois)—While the experimental work of Walker and Shawin this article is of intrinsic value in revealing certain fundamental aspects of machine grinding, milling, and related processes and in adding to the store of information concerning the comminution of solid materials by this particular process, it appears doubtful that the results of their research can be employed to verify either Kick's or Rittinger's theories. Both these laws were originally developed and proposed on the basis of very simple, idealized hypotheses. The creation of parallel idealized physical laboratory conditions which would be required for either their proof or disproof appear to be well beyond the scope of human ingenuity, at least at present. One great weakness of the imputed verification is that the spread of the points plotted on the graphs is not sufficient to permit accurate 'curve fitting. The range of particle sizes included in the belt and wheel grinding is not extensive enough to show any general trends, particularly for the horizontal portion of the curves, said to represent Kick's laws. That the milling; grinding, and turning data obtained by Walker and Shaw for both metals and minerals happen to comply with. certain interpretations of these two theories under certain specialized conditions
