WE are accustomed to think that we are efficient in the United States, particularly with respect to such things as mining and manufacturing. The conduct of the war has demanded in England and in France a complete readjustment of manufacturing methods and plans, and today England is probably as efficient a country as there is in the world, not even excepting Germany. This is all the more remarkable because it has been notorious for years that England has been inefficient in her manufacturing and the country has been flooded with things "Made in Germany." Today England is almost a socialistic community and the State is doing almost everything. England is now in such a position that practically everyone in the country is engaged in industry necessary for the conduct of the war, and this has been accomplished by increasing the efficiency both of her tools and of her man power. In the United States we certainly have been efficient so far as machines and perhaps so far as methods have been concerned, but we have not been efficient iii the utilization of our man power. Before the war, our labor was undoubtedly far more efficient than that of England, but it certainly was not so highly efficient as it should have been, and the problem that confronts us today, and will all the more confront us after the war, is to make our man power efficient. England has had a taste of what you may call State Socialism, and her laboring men are not going to be content to return to the old order of things. There is one feature of the labor problem in England which has permitted her to reach this condition of state socialism with comparative rapidity; this is that practically all of her laborers are English; she has little or no foreign population. While an Englishman may he a strong union man and ready to fight his employer tooth and nail, at heart he is still a British subject, and when his country was in danger he rose to the occasion.

The existence of local room-temperature plastic flow in germanium, which has been a subject of controversy for nearly two decades, has recently received renewed attention, albeit no more agreement than hitherto. Phenomenologically one major facet of the problem has been reduced to the question whether or not indentation can be effected in germanium without the introduction of cracks. That plastic flow can be induced at room temperature by fracture appears to have been rather convincingly demonstrated recently by Suzuki and Kamada and by Noble and Henisch.1 The literature contains both direct and incidental references to Vickers and Knoop indentations showing no cracks, within resolution of optical microscopy. Recently, however, following a controversy on the subject,2,3 johnson4 made a study of indentations produced by spherical indenters and concluded that these are accompanied by cracking. Residual lattice strai?zs were produced in 2024 aluminum and ingot iron by uniaxial tensile deformation. These strains were rneasured on the original surface and ulith depth below the surface. The strains conformed approximately to those from a macroscopic stress distribution but they were not truly macroscopic in nature. The exact mechanism which apparently causes the coherently difi9,acting region of each grain to behave as if macroscopically stressed was not determined. MACROSCOPIC stresses in metals produce strains in the lattice which result in X-ray line broadening and line displacements. The latter effect can be utilized in a technique for determining stresses in metals as first shown by Lester and born.' Subsequent advances in technique have enabled the X-ray method of stress measurement to be satisfactorily applied to many problems involving residual stresses of a macroscopic nature, such as those due to welding, grinding, shot-peening, and so forth. In the case of stresses such as those described above, the correlation of X-ray- and mechanically determined data has been generally good. However, plastically extended polycrystalline metals have sometimes been reported2 to show line displacements upon release of the applied tensile load, yet the nature or origin of the residual lattice strains, rls, producing these displacements has never been clear. As will be pointed out, this lack of clarity regarding the macroscopic or microscopic nature and origin of these stresses casts doubt on the validity of results achieved by the commonly accepted techniques of X-ray stress measurement. This anomalous behavior requires clarification to remove the doubts concerning X-ray stress measurement. The present paper is the result of an investigation of the interesting behavior of such plastically extended polycrystalline metal bodies. The studies were originated to carry out the following tasks: 1) Observe whether a residual lattice strain is produced as a result of plastic extension and show whether any residual lattice strains produced can be related to the usual concept of a macrostress. 2) Examine the origin of any residual lattice strains observed. 3) Consider the implications or consequences of the existence of such residual lattice strains on the problem of X-ray stress measurement. THEORY 1) Lattice Strains. The theoretical developments necessary for the treatment of lattice strains and their relation to stresses follow from the classical theory of elasticity and have been adequately covered by arrett. For an isotropic solid under homogeneous deformation, it can be shown that, for uniaxial stresses where Dl is the macrostress acting in the longitudinal direction; E$L is the lattice strain in the plane defined by the surface normal and the longitudinal direction at an angle, , from the surface normal; ET is the similar strain in the transverse plane; E is Young's modulus; and v is Poisson's ratio. Eq. [2] is independent of angle + and Eq. [I] is a linear function of sin2, see Fig. 1, and can be solved analytically for DL if E and u are known and EL is measured. TEe method of R. W. Moore' for determining subsurface interfacial depths by means of integrated curves of apparent resistivity has been analyzed theoretically. It is found that the only unique tangents that can be drawn to such curves are the asymptotes at infinite electrode spacing and the tangents through the origin at vanishing electrode spacing. Explicit expressions have been derived for the relationship between the electrode spacing at the points of intersection of these tangents and the thickness of the surface strata as a function of the conductivity parameters for the two-layer and three-layer earths. It is found that in all cases the electrode spacing at the points of intersection will exceed % of the thickness of the surface layer, and may even become indefinitely large as the resistivity of the deepest layers increases as compared with that of the surface layer. These results do not agree with the empirical findings of Moore that the intersection of the tangent lines fall at an electrode spacing very approxirnately equal to the thickness of the surface layer. This consists essentially in plotting against the electrode separation of a Gish-Rooney system the integral of the apparent resistivity with respect to the electrode spacing, and observing the breaks in the integral curves. Specifically, tangents are drawn to the various segments of the integral curves, which show appreciably different slopes, and the intersections of these tangents are used as indications of the depths of the various underlying strata. By numerous examples Moore has shown that the electrode separation at the first intersection so found agrees very closely with the depth of the bottom of the surface layer. Moreover, in a number of instances the intersections for greater electrode spacings seemed to correspond to the depths of deeper beds. From a strictly empirical point of view, the procedure proposed and demonstrated by Moore appears to be particularly interesting because of its simplicity as well as its apparent accuracy, Moreover, such a simple method would be especially valuable in view of the well-known difliculties heretofore encountered in the quantitative interpretation of resistivity data. It therefore seems appropriate to attempt a mathematical analysis of the problem to see whether the integral method of Moore has a sound basis. Such an analysis is presented here. Even on cursory consideration, it is clear that the remarkable successes observed by Moore in the application of his method are indeed surprising. For it depends upon the determination and choice of the slopes of smooth and continuous curves, which by their nature must show even more gradual- variations than the original apparent-resistivity plots that are already so difficult to interpret quantitatively. The outstanding engineering accomplishment of the last three decades has been the development and application of more and cheaper power and its use instead of the labor of men and animals. Substitution of power for manual labor has taken effect on every hand in the United States. With the aid of energy mechanically available to his hand, one man does the work that only a few years ago required two, three or even a greater number of laborers. The results in respect to the favorable economic effects are well known; namely, increased production, higher wages and lower costs. On the other hand, the vast social effects, both good and bad, have been none the less important, even if less understood and only casually regarded. The chief sources of energy today are the mineral fuels, coal and petroleum. In the United States they yield more than 90 per cent of the total energy demand. Thirty years ago the proportion of energy supplied by the mineral fuels was likewise above 90 per cent, but the division according to origin was very different. These relations are shown for the years 1900, 1930 and 1950 in Table 1. Method or Preparation and Interpretation of Statistical Data The fuels comprised in this study are: (1) the coal group including both bituminous and anthracite coal; (2) the petroleum group, taking in not only petroleum but natural gas and natural-gas gasoline. A method of calculating activities in binary systems having miscibility gaps is described. The method, which applies only to the phase in which the gap occurs, is exact when the function defined by the equation varies linearly with composition. Analytical and numerical solutions (as a function of the conjugate phase compositions) are presented for two coefficients A and B from which the thermodynamic activities can be calculated. Deviations from Henry's law, calculable by the method presented, are shown graphically for the particula~ case of the component i at the edge of the miscibility gap more remote .from pure component i. For symmetrical gaps, the deviation from Henry's law at this gap edge becomes smaller as the gap becomes wider, The interrelation of gap location, the direction of departures from Henry's law and the occurrence of maxima and minzma in these departures is discussed in some detail. Values for a and for activity calculated from phase diagrams show fair to excellent agreement with corresponding experimental values in the Al-Zn and CaO-SiO2 systems. WHEN structurally similar phases, B and 6, lie at the sides of a two-phase region in a constitution diagram, it can be assumed that, stably or metast-ably, they will become completely miscible at a higher temperature. The B and 6 phases are particular composition ranges of a single B6 phase region with a miscibility gap. Below, as above, the critical solution temperature, the free energy of formation of the 06 phase is a continuous function of composition through the range of the miscibility gap. It is the purpose of this paper to use this continuous free-energy function in order to develop a simple method for computing the thermodynamic activities in the B6 solution of a binary system. A new theoretical treatment has been obtained for the behavior of pattern waterflood injection wells when closed in. Two cases are treated: Case I where oil and water are assumed to have the same properties, and Case 2 where they arc different. In applying the method, one plots log (p — p,) vs closed-in time, where p is well-bore pressure at any tims and p, is static pressure. The value of p. is determined by trial and error as that value which makes the plot linear at large time. A value for the permeability-thickness product can be determined from the intercept of this linear part, and a value of the skin factor from the injection pressure at time of closing in. Application of the method to data from water floods at three fields seems to give reasonable results. For the case of unit mobility ratio, it is proved that this new method should give the same value for permeability-thickness product as the conventional pressure build-up method. In addition, the new method gives correct values for static pressure, whereas the conventional method does not, often indicating negative static pressures. The new method may be used in cases where the surface pressure persists after closing in as well as in cases where it does not. INTRODUCTION It is of considerable interest and importance to be able to determine the characteristics of the reservoir in an area surrounding a water injection well. Thus, if we can determine early in the life of an injection well that there is a considerable "skin effect", remedial measures can be started before a full-scale pattern flood begins. Similarly, if it can be shown that a gradual buildup of skin effect is occurring with time, measures to free the water of plugging material can be taken. Determination of static pressure in the water-injection well may show that the water is entering a thief zone and not the desired reservoir. Finally, determination of the permeability of the sand around the injection well will allow estimation of the future relation between injection pressure and rate. It should be possible to determine average reservoir permeability, skin effect and static pressure from pressure fall-off data. However, at the time we began work on this subject, it was thought that no adequate theory on which to base such determinations' was available. According to the conventional method which considers the reservoir to be filled with one fluid of small compressibility (see Van Everdingen, Joers2, and Nowak2), shut-in pressure is plotted vs log where is injection time, and At is closed-in time. The physical significance of injection time, may well be questioned in this case, since in a reservoir completely filled with a single fluid (as required by this theory) and with input and output rates equal, the pressure behavior after an initial transient is independent of t,. Attempts by our Tulsa area to use this theory led to negative values of static pressure in most cases. Because of these limitations of the method discussed above, it was decided to attempt to develop a new theory of pressure behavior in water injection wells, one which would apply when there is a gas saturation, as is so often the case in water floods. In the following treatment the assumptions and basic equations are given first, then the method of application of the equations. A complete example is given to clarify details of application. All difficult mathematics has been placed in the appendices so that the reader can follow the text without difficulty. However, if he wishes only to apply the results without knowing the basis for them, he can learn how to do this from reading only the sections entitled "Plotting of Experimental Results" and "Example." ASSUMPTIONS AND BASIC EQUATIONS Statement of Problem It will be assumed that a horizontal layer of constant thickness contains in its pore system a mixture of oil, gas and water. While water is being injected into this pore- system through a well at constant rate, an oil bank is built up, gas being expelled from the space taken by the oil as shown in Fig. 1. The Ballyvergin area is located in County Clare on the southwest coast of Ireland. It is one of six areas in County Clare in which mining operations were carried out during the last century. The ores mined were high grade Cu-Pb-Ag deposits in the form of small fracture fillings and gash veins in the lower Carboniferous limestones. The zone of primary economic interest is situated on the north limb of a geosyncline which plunges moderately to the southwest. The zones of mineralization previously mined were associated with local structures and folds, and the initial geophysical investigations took the form of reconnaissance induced polarization measurements around, and between, the old mines. This work located an anomaly which, on drilling, resulted in a small extension of the Pb-Cu ore at the Ballyvergin mine. However, a potentially more important zone of mineralization resulted from the drilling of another IP anomaly near Ballyvergin. This wide anomaly was found to be a domal shaped deposit of disseminated chalcopyrite located at a depth of more than 100 ft. The deposit is controlled by local folding in the sediments and is of a type previously unknown in the area. More IP investigations are under way to locate other deposits of the same type. The Ballyvergin area is located in County Clare, about 35 miles northeast of Shannon Airport, near the Atlantic west coast of Southern Ireland (Fig. 1). Interest in the area stems from a number of occurrences of small, but high grade, Pb-Ag deposits. From the summer of 1960 to the spring of 1961, Irish Base Metals carried out a comprehensive exploration program on a 38-sq mile concession in east-central County Clare in an attempt to locate additional deposits of this type. Field operations consisted of geologic mapping, geochemical soil and stream sampling, geophysical surveying and diamond drilling. The geophysical program consisted primarily of detailed induced polarization (IP) surveys in the general vicinity of old mine workings, supplemented by electromagnetic and self-potential investigations. Subsequent diamond drilling of a well defined IP anomaly close to the old Ballyvergin mine disclosed a sizeable deposit of low grade disseminated copper, a type of deposit previously unknown in this area. REGIONAL GEOLOGY Topography: The topography is of the Karst type with low regional relief. The northern parts of the area are covered almost completely with glacial deposits including a large number of drumlins. Elsewhere the overburden is patchy and only moderately deep. A close network of roads makes every part of the area readily accessible, and rail and harbor facilities are available nearby — Fig. 2. Stratigraphy: The area was mapped on a reconnaissance basis by the Geological Survey of Ireland during the latter part of the 19th century at scales of 1 and 6 in. to the mile. INTRODUCTION What is automation? Why automate? Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary defines automation as "the automatically controlled operation of an apparatus, process or system by mechanical or electronic devices that take the place of human organs of observation, effort, and decision." This definition gives an implied answer to the second question, )"Why automate?" Automation, automatic control devices and process control equipment receive their justification in supplementing or replacing manpower, which results in decreased operating costs. In the past, processes were operated with a minimum of instruments for the purpose of merely guiding the operators. Processes were manually controlled by the operator on the basis of simple temperature, pressure, flow and level indications on a panel. Today the tendency is to design a new plant to operate in a fully automatic manner according to a preset pro- gram utilizing a minimum of manpower. In addition to this direct cost reduction savings in manual labor, increased equipment capacity results from uniformity of flow and uniform control of process variables. This control eliminates or minimizes surges and permits equipment to be operated at or near its ultimate capacity and, for a given material through- put, permits the use of smaller process equipment. Automatic control, therefore, be it in the field of coal processing or in any industrial field, is simply a problem of economics. Control equipment is justified in terms of its contribution toward increasing productivity, increasing profit margins or producing a new and saleable product at a profit. Instruments and control devices can be divided into two general groups: (1) units which measure, and (2) units which both measure and control a process variable. In coal processing, the first class of instruments, those which measure only, include analytical devices such as automatic ash, moisture and sulfur measuring units and the simple pressure, temperature, flow and level indicating devices mentioned previously. The second group of instruments, those which both measure and control, include a wide variety of units such as continuous weighing devices on conveyor belts and photoelectric cells which gauge the position of railroad cars on the track and insure that the cars are in the proper location for loading (see Chapter 15). The latter types of units as used in the coal industry differ from those used in other industries in one significant point. In coal processing these instruments need not be as highly sophisticated and accurate as in other industries; hence their cost is proportionately lower than in other industries. The separation of fine sizes of coal from its impurities by means of various flotation methods has become of increasing importance in the coal industry. This, no doubt, will be even more so in the future as the quantity of high grade coal is depleted, particularly that used for metallurgical purposes. The purpose of this paper is to describe and report the results of research work done under the auspices of the Pittsburgh Coal Co. to determine the amenability of their bituminous fine sizes of coal to flotation, to investigate the value of various reagents and factors affecting their use, and compare the results between froth flotation and bulk oil flotation. Compared with the preferential flotation of complex minerals, or ores, the flotation of coal is comparatively easy. However, this statement should not lull one into the feeling that there are no special problems involved. For instance, the separation of coal from pyrite in high sulphur coals is still far from being 100 pet successful. Size consist has considerable effect on reagent consumption and recovery. Other factors will be described and finally it must be remembered that in the flotation of coal a low priced material is being treated and thus economic considerations govern more closely its application than is generally the case in treating other minerals. As a result of the research work done by the Pittsburgh Coal Co. on the flotation of coal, it was concluded that it was practical to clean the —48-mesh coal commercially by froth flotation and after several different types of flotation units and circuits were investigated by means of pilot plants, large scale units were installed at their Champion Nos. 1, 4 and 5 Preparation Plants for the cleaning of —48-mesh slurries. These large scale operations have been recently described by D. H. Davis.' C. P. Proctor and C. B. Carlson2 in their chapter on Froth Flotation of Coal in the AIME Seeley W. Mudd series book on Coal Preparation describe some of the practical applications of our Pittsburgh Coal Co. laboratory work in actual plant practice as well as summarizing part of the investiga-tional work. The author presents this paper, however, as a supplement to their reports, and records the basic research accomplished in the laboratory investiga-tional work as well as the results of experiments using bulk oil flotation. In presenting this work the author wishes to state much more work must be done in applying the principles of flotation to cleaning coal, especially in view of recent studies and practices in other mineral beneficiation fields. Methods of Conducting Laboratory Tests The bulk of the research work was conducted in the laboratory of the Champion No. I Preparation Plant. He is to be commended for his pioneer work in the study of equilibrium systems at the very high temperatures which one obtains with tungsten and molybdenum. There is one statement, however, to which I must take exception. On page 1227, a statement is made which would seem to indicate that the Nela Research Laboratory joined Dr. Langmuir in the recommendation of 3,300°C. as the most probable melting point of tungsten. This is not the case. In. the paper referred to by Mr. Jeffries, I have given 3,630°K. or 3,357°C. as the melting-point temperature for tungsten. Confirming observations by other workers in our laboratory justify the belief that this latter value is correct to within a small part of the discrepancy between the two values quoted.

THE strain sensitivity, K, a property of metals defined as the unit change in electrical resistance per unit strain, was measured for commercial purity titanium wire to determine its usefulness as a strain gage material. A Kelvin double bridge, accurate to 0.000001 ohm, was used to make measurements from 0 to 1 pct total strain. A positive value of 0.17 for K was found. This compares with 2.15 for constantan and 3.5 for cold-worked invar, two of the more common strain gage materials. The effect of temperature also was determined. It was found that a change in temperature of 30°F caused the same resistance change as 1 pct strain. It is therefore concluded that titanium would have utility as a strain gage only if the thermal fluctuations in the specimen could be controlled to a high degree and in applications of very large total strain.

THE McIntyre mine is in the Pearl Lake section of the Porcupine gold area. The rocks are Keewatin lavas intruded by quartz porphyries and albitite dikes of Algoman age. Gold-bearing quartz veins are found in the Keewatin rocks near the porphyry stocks. The whole area has been highly compressed by forces acting along a N. 20°W. line. These forces folded the Keewatin rocks before the intrusion of the Algoman rocks, and later schisted both the Keewatin and Algoman rocks. Vein fractures were developed after the folding but before the development of the schist by the compressive forces being locally broken up into couples. These couples were set up by the differential resistance to deformation of porphyries and basalts, and also by the competency of the dacites and incompetency of the tuffs and fragmental rocks. THE Hercules mine is located in the northeastern section of the Coeur d'Alene district, approximately 1 1/2 miles north of the town of Burke, Idaho. Surface indications of the ore deposit were first discovered in 1886, but regular mine production was not started until 1902 and was continuous until April 1925, when the known ore had been extracted. Incomplete records show that from 1912 until operations were suspended the mine produced 2 1/2 million tons of ore containing 9.4 pct lead and 7.7 oz of silver per ton, together with an estimated 2 pct zinc, 0.3 pct copper, and 20 pct iron. This operation was the first in a series of mining enterprises culminating in October 1947 with the consolidation of Day Mines, Inc. In the same year it was decided to unwater the levels below the collar of the Hercules shaft in the hope of finding some indication of a recurrence of ore. The unwatering operation has been described in a previous paper.1 The initial exploration, following recapture of the workings, showed sufficient promise to warrant a detailed study of the mineralogy with modern techniques.

The purpose of this paper is to clarify the definition of compressibility and to present a uniform basis upon which instantaneous compressibilities of liquids and gases can be compared. The equations gaverning the instantaneous compressibilities of imperfect gases are derived and the concept of pseudo-reduced compressibility is introduced. Part of the data presented by Brown, Katz et a1 on compressibility factors for natural gases has been rearranged. A graph of pseudo-reduced compressibility vs pseudo-reduced pressure for various pseudo-reduced temperatures is presented. The need for additional work in relating the compressibilities of liquids and gases is discussed. This information should be of value to reservoir engineers in making non-steady state performance calculations in gas reservoirs. It should be of further use irz pointing the direction for additional research in the nature of liquid and gas compressibilities. INTRODUCTION With the increasing use of steady and non-steady state well and reservoir data, there is a corresponding increase in the importance of the various factors entering into such calculations. Increasing emphasis is being placed on the necessity for obtaining reasonably accurate estimates of the physical properties of the reservoir fluids well in advance of the more accurate laboratory data. One such factor is the isothermal coefficient of expansion of the media which are transmitting and attenuating the non-steady state pressure waves. The average isothermal coefficient of expansion, or "compressibility" is a complex function controlled by the physical properties of the formation and the fluids contained therein. The isothermal expansion coefficients for reservoir gases are usually quite variable, in many cases being highly-pressure sensitive. The coefficients for reservoir liquids tend to be pressure sensitive, but not nearly so much as reservoir gases. The coefficients for solids, usually expressed in terms of a "modulus of elasticity" are relatively insensitive to pressure variations within their elastic limits. For this reason, and also because many previous applications have been limited to rel- atively small pressure ranges, there has been a tendency to ignore the variable nature of isothermal expansion coefficients and treat them as constants. Also, the term "compressibility" by which these coefficients are generally designated is commonly confused with a similar term, z, used to define the deviation of an imperfect natural gas from the perfect gas laws. A clear distinction should be made at the outset between the term "compressibility", which is an isothermal coefficient of expansion of a substance, and the term "compressibility factor", z, which refers to the deviation of a gas from the perfect gas laws. Although the scope of this paper is limited to the compressibility of single phase natural gases, it is definitely related to the problem of accurately estimating the compressibilities of single phase hydrocarbon reservoir liquids, which will form the basis of a future presentation. BASIC PRINCIPLES The coefficient of isothermal compressibility of a substance, c, is usually determined from pressure-volume or pressure-length -measurements depending upon whether the substance is single phase gas, liquid, or solid. A convenient method for making such estimates for a finite change in pressure and volume at constant temperature is to use the well known equation V1-V2/V1 (p2 - p1) .....(1) Eq. 1 is negative because the volume of a confined substance decreases as the pressure is increased. In this case V1 > V2 and p2 > p1. This equation is useful in approximating the compressibilities of single phase gases and liquids undergoing small pressure changes. It is evident, however, that this equation is almost identical with the determination of Young's modulus of elasticity for solids. If the assumption is made that change in length is directly proportional to change in volume, as would very nearly be the case for a steel rod in tension within its elastic limit, then E5=-L1 (p2 - p1)/L1 - L2 .......(2) in which E. is the isothermal expansion coefficient, or Young's modulus of elasticity, for a solid. And further, for this special case L1 (p2 - p1)/L1 - L2 .......(3)

There is a growing interest in the possibilities presented by the manipulation of metal powders, which justifies an attempt to summarize their character and potential value. A summary of this kind presents an opportunity for making a classification of metal powder products into several general types. Our present knowledge of the finer and more abstract aspects of many of the principles involved in metal powder technique is extremely limited. Any conclusions as to the ultimate value of the process will, therefore, for the present at least, be of doubtful value unless they are substantiated by its products. The number of such products is increasing. A study of their diverse and unusual characteristics; an examination of the methods by which they are made, and a consideration of the reactions that take place during their fabrication, in so far as we can define them, should afford as good an evaluation of this interesting development as it is possible to make at this time. A critical study of this kind results in a formidable list of special attributes, which apparently are characteristic of applied powder metallurgy. A comparison of these special effects with the end products and well defined limitations of the melting and casting process indicate that often they may very well be considered as being special advantages. They are subject, of course, to certain not as yet so well defined limitations of their own. Based on current products only, a necessarily condensed summary of the more striking special attributes of the metal powder process follows. Manipulation of Highly Refractory Metals The powder process presents a means of manipulating highly refractory metals, which cannot be cast and formed in the usual melting and casting process. Tungsten, molybdenum and tantalum are the classic examples of the adequacy of the metal powder process for meeting unusual conditions of this character.
