By electrical prospecting, orebodies that do not otherwise manifest themselves at the surface may be located. Conditions favorable to success with the methods are: Favorable geological conditions, such a proportion of minerals of good electrical conductivity in the orebody as will render the latter materially a better conductor than the enclosing rock, situation of the orebody within the range of influence of the electrical currents used and in proportion to this range a sufficient area of horizontal cross section of the orebody. The result is to permit of spotting drill holes accurately and to save the expense of drilling barren ground. THE art of prospecting, like other branches of mining, has developed rapidly during the last ten years, mainly because of the advancement of mining geology, but also because of the development of "geophysical methods," which are based on the different physical characters of minerals and rocks, e. g., specific gravity, elasticity, and magnetic and electric properties. These methods have proved of great value, especially in countries where the rock is covered by soil and direct geologic investigation is out of the question. In prospecting for orebodies, the methods based on studying differences in electrical conductivity have proved most successful; for which reason, the methods of electrical prospecting have been subject to the most energetic and systematic work, especially in Sweden. This paper gives a brief description of the methods of electrical prospecting now in use, especially the new electromagnetic methods, which have not been described before. The great differences in the electrical properties, especially in conductivity, between ore minerals and rock minerals are fundamental to all methods of electrical prospecting, for which reason, the electrical conductivity of ore minerals and rock minerals has been carefully studied in connection with and previous to the development of the various methods of prospecting with electricity. Ore minerals with a metallic luster, such as chalcopyrite, iron pyrite, galena, specular iron, magnetite, etc., also graphite and a number of cows, have considerably higher conductivity than the surrounding rock and soil (see Table 1). The figures of the table denote the specific resistance W, expressed in ohms for a cube with an edge of 1 centimeter.

Tailings water from primary flotation concentrators usually contains minor amounts of pollutants such as heavy metals, cyanide and solubilized molybdenum, which are solubilized in the flotation process. A review of various techniques to reduce pollutants to acceptable levels is presented. Generally, molybdenite ores are processed by conventional size-reduction techniques, followed by flotation to produce a metallurgical-grade concentrate of 88% to 92% MoS2. Reagents commonly used in the milling process include: vapor oil (collector); pine oil, MIBC (frother); Dowfroth 250 (water-soluble frother); lime (rougher pH control); and sodium cyanide (Fe and Cu depressor). For lead depression, Nokes reagent is stage-added to the regrind mills and cleaners. Flocculant is added to obtain clear overflows in the intermediate thickeners.

The effect of changes in temperature and stress on the creep behavior of Fe-4 pct Si was investigated over the temperature range from 650° to 1175K Over the temperature range of 799° to 110l°K, the shear strain rate, ?', obeys the relationship: where K is a constant, 7 the applied shear stress, G the shear modulus, g the free activation energy for diflusion, R the gas constant, and T the absolute temperature. The results strongly suggest that the creep in this alloy is controlled by a dislocation climb mechanism. In a recent investigation, Ishida, Cheng, and Dorn1 observed that the apparent activation energy for creep of a! Fe from 480" to 775°K corresponded to that for self-diffusion. Over the magnetic transformation range (775" to 1045"K), the apparent activation energy for creep increased steeply with increasing temperature in agreement with the known decrease in the free activation energy for self-diffusion. Passing through the Curie temperature, the apparent activation energy decreased abruptly following which it then increased mildly as the temperature further increased. Inasmuch as the apparent activation energy for creep of a! Fe below the Curie transformation range of temperatures appeared to decrease with increasing values of the stress, the data were analyzed in terms of a model based on the nonconservative motion of jogged screw dislocations. But since the observed creep rate was much higher than that which could be accounted for on the basis of usual models, the authors found it necessary to assume that pipe diffusion became significant over the lower temperature range. Furthermore, the abnormally high activation energy for creep above the Curie temperature was attributed to grain boundary migration which became prevalent in this temperature range. It was thought that a number of the interesting issues that arose in the creep of a Fe might be resolved by investigating the creep of Fe-4 pct Si alloy: This alloy has about the same Curie range and therefore should give creep results that closely parallel those for a Fe and in this way provide comparable data for analysis of creep mechanisms. Furthermore, it can be annealed at higher temperatures which could provide some stabilization against grain boundary migration. In addition, it might serve to illustrate the possible effects of short-range ordering on creep.

The purpose of this discussion is to comment briefly on one of the points raised in the paper. The topic is that referred to in the Conclusion 2, in which the authors note a "disproportionate increase in mixing rate" as they proceed from a displacement performed at viscosity ratio 0.998 to one at 1.002. The recovery curve of this displacement, Fig.2A, shows a quite noticeable difference between the two runs in which displaced and displacing liquids were interchanged. This difference is ascribed by the authors to the change in viscosity ratio between the two experiments. This interpretation of the experimental results must certainly be based on rather precise measurements of the fluid viscosities or, at least, of the ratio of their viscosities. The ordinary Ostwald viscometer, employed in the usual way, is only just able to distinguish between liquids whose viscosities differ by two or three parts per thousand. The experimental refinements which then must have been necessary to measure with any precision a viscosity ratio of 1.002 would be worthy of mention. Indeed, one would have expected the authors to devote at least a paragraph to the display of this technique. For the same reason - to emphasize that the details of such unusually critical experimental work should be reported and discussed in the literature — I would have liked to see some comment by the authors on the requirements for temperature control during both the viscosity measurements and the displacement experiments. The temperature coefficient of viscosity of Soltrol C at room temperature has been measured in this laboratory at about - 1.9%/1°C. How much did the coefficients for the fluid mixtures used in the experiment differ from this and from each other Even if the two fluids were identical in this respect, it would appear that a temperature difference of .l°C between them in the flow system would produce a viscosity con- trast equal to that imposed by their composition. Reference to the experimental solutions of these problems would render Conclusion 2 more credible. Published theoretical work on the stability problem contains no indication of such extreme sensitivity to the viscosity ratio in the immediate neighborhood of unity. On the contrary, perturbation calculations such as those made by Chuoke1 and Perrine2 lead to initial finger growth rates proportional to the first power of the viscosity difference. The later instability growth calculated by Scheidegger,3 using the assumption of zero pressure gradient perpendicular to the average flow, is also simply proportional to the viscosity difference. The conflict regarding the sensitivity of the dependence of instability growth or mixing rate on the viscosity contrast needs explicit recognition in the literature. In particular, it would seem that the experimental work reported here should be supported by a more detailed description of the viscosity controls. Further discussion of possible alternative interpretations of the data would also be in order. For instance, is it possible that the unconsolidstted bead pack used changed its characteristics between the runs (due, perhaps, to the handling and inverting involved in the injection of the front) Or, are the data points of Fig. 2A averages from several runs performed in a series in which the two liquids alternated as displaced and displacing fluids? To summarize, it seems to me that the relationship asserted by Conclusion 2 in the paper needs the support of more detailed experimental evidence. REFERENCES 1. Chouke, R. THERE has been so much misinformation sent out through the newspapers, and I find so few people who are really acquainted with the true facts in regard to the coal strike, that I feel it would be advan-tageous to present the facts as I have been able to gather them. One of the great points that the miners are now mak-ing is the fact that the operators of the central competi-tive field, consisting of the states of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania, have refused to meet them in a joint conference such as has been customary in previous years. There are two reasons why the operators de-clined to hold such a meeting. In the first place, the last time they held a meeting of this kind they were all indicted under the Sherman Act for making an agree-ment in restraint of trade. In the second place, the miners at their convention did not authorize their dele-gates to negotiate a new contract, but instructed them that nothing less than a scale based on the present wage, with the addition that there should be a six-hour day, a five-clay week, time j and a half for over time, and double time for Sundays, would be accepted. These additions would very much increase the cost of coal over the present wage scale. The operators could not consider renewing a contract on the present scale, as it would mean ruin for them, and as the miners were not authorized to negotiate a new scale on a fair basis that would enable the operators to mine coal in competi¬tion, with the open-shop mines the operators did not feel that there was any use in meeting the delegates. Thirty per cent. of the output of bituminous coal comes from the open-shop mines of West Virginia, Alabama and Pennsylvania. During the strike, in 1919, this 30 per cent. was increased to 50 per cent. and it has affected the operations of the union mines to such an extent this year that they have been able to run only 15 to 30 per cent. of their time, while the open shop mines have run from 60 to 80 per cent. as the wages in these mines had been reduced to the 1917 scale.

IN a search for an improved conductor for use in field wire for the L. S. Army Signal Corps, an alloy of copper and silver was developed from which it was possible to obtain 29 B & S ga. strands with tensile strengths in excess of 160,000 psi combined with an electrical conductivity of over 70 pct IACS. Such a favorable combination of strength and electrical conductivity has not been reported previously in the rather extensive literature covering this subject. The properties obtained from various binary alloys of copper and silver, together with the method of fabrication of these alloys which has been developed to obtain the properties desired in fine wire strands, are discussed in this paper. LITERATURE The effect on the electrical conductivity of copper of the various elements in solid solution is shown in Fig I, taken from published data by J. O. Linde and others.' It will be noted that silver in solid solution depresses the electrical conductivity to a lesser extent than any other element for which data are given, and is followed rather closely by cadmium, and then by chromium. Zinc, which lies between cadmium and chromium, has so high a solid solubility in copper that the data for zinc are scarcely comparable to the data for the other two in the range covered. Not many data are available on the strain hardening of copper-rich Cu-Ag alloys. Corson2 reports a 3 pct Ag alloy properly cold worked and annealed to have 100,000 psi tensile strength and 90 pct IACS conductivity. On straight cold working, Hessenbruch3 reports 101.000 psi for a 5 pct Ag, 0.3 pct Be alloy, and 129,000 psi for a 30 pct Ag, 0.5 pct Be alloy. Here it would he expected that much of the strain hardening came from the silver content of the alloys. The copper-rich side of the Cu-Ag diagram, according to Stockdale,4 is shown in the upper part of Fig 2. The electrical conductivities for copper-silver alloys annealed at 750 and 350°C, taken from the work of Johansson and Linde,5 are shown in the lower part of Fig 2. The sloping line corresponds to the conductivity of solid solutions of silver in copper, and the horizontal offshoots correspond to the conductivity of the two-phase alloys in equilibrium at the two temperatures shown. The electrical conductivities are very high, even for the 750°C anneal. The potentiality for age hardening from supersaturated alpha copper solutions appears to be excellent from the solubility line, but Smith and Lindlief6 have shown that the response to age hardening of solution-annealed alpha alloys is not good. They found that the tensile strength of a 5 pct Ag alloy aged at various temperatures was not as great as in the quenched condition, even though, anomalously, the hardness increased from RB68 to RB78 by annealing for 4 hr at 400°C after a 750°C quench. Two approaches were taken to obtain direct experimental evidence jar the existence oj a jet in the explosion-cladding pvocess: 1) direct observation of the claddirg jwocess by rtzeans ojf kig-h-speed photography using a fvartziiy catnera and 2) use of a plated-surface experiment in contribution with clzetrzical analysis. The framing-camera records showed clearly the presence of a jet it1 the form of what appears to be a line spray. The jet velocity is considerably highev than the detonation velocity arid in vacuum it is almost twice as high as the detonatiou velocily. MaNY reports on metal working with explosives have appeared in the literature during the last few yearsThis paper describes experiments concern- ing the mechanism of the explosive metal-cladding process. It has become increasingly important as a unique method for bonding metals and a typical cladding arrangement is shown in Fig. 1. A theoretical analysis of the mechanism of explosive bonding and a description of the nature and types of bond zones obtained was given by Cowan and oltzman." A further discussion of the basic principles of the process, a detailed description of the different bond-zone types, and extensive information on the properties and the applications of explosively bonded metals was recently published by Holtzman and cowan. " The process is now in commercial use by E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. The concept of the existence of a jet during metal bonding with explosives forms a central part in the theoretical analysis of the cladding mechanism described by Cowan and Holtzman When a layer of explosive is detonated on a metal plate that is separated from a second metal plate by a small distance the metal plate in contact with the detonating explosive is accelerated by the detonation pressure. An angle is established between the undeflected and deflected portions of the plate. Subsequently the deflected portion of the first plate collides with the second metal plate.

Previous investigations have shown that the cold rolling textures1n2 and the drawn wire textures3 of copper change their secondary components after the addition of about 1 pct aluminum and 5 pct zinc, but do not change after the addition of as much as 30 pct nickel. However, few data are available on compression textures. Barrett4 reports from unpublished work with E. L. Layland that compression rolled copper develops a texture which is predominately (110) in the compression plane with a secondary spread to (113) and weaker spread to (100) as shown in Fig 1. However, 70-30 alpha brass similarly treated develops a texture again predominately (110) in the compression plane and with a weak secondary spread to {113} but with moderate (111) secondary intensities illustrated in Fig 2. Experimental Procedure Specimens of the compositions shown in Table 1 remaining from a previous investigation3 were annealed to a grain size of 0.090 mm average diam and machined to cylinders 0.20 in. diam and 0.20 in. high. Cylinders were compressed 90 pct reduction in height between lubricated steel blocks in a tensile machine. Glancing X ray photo-grams using copper K-alpha radiation were taken at an angle of 0 degrees to the compression surface. (111), (002) and (220) rings were analyzed to define the textures shown in Table 1. The results are in agreement with Barrett4 as to types of textures and are essentially in agreement with previous work1,2,3 as to the effects of composition. In the wire study3 it was reported that the 4.99 pct zinc alloy had a brass-type texture, while the data in Table 1 indicate a copper-type texture for compression. The wire specimen of the 4.99 pct zinc alloy was re-examined by X rays and it was established that the [loo] component still exists in the wire axis. Therefore, Table 2 of Ref. 3 is in error and should indicate a double [ill], [loo] copper-type texture for this alloy. This correction results in complete consistency with regard to compositional effects, namely that copper and its alloys containing up to approximately 1 pet aluminum, 5 pct zinc and at least 30 pct nickels develop a copper-type texture and more concentrated copper-aluminum and copper-zinc solid solution alloys will form a brass-type texture. Summary Compression textures developed in copper and its alpha solid solution alloys of aluminum, nickel and zinc are essentially the same types as those re- ported by Barrett4 with compositional effects occurring at approximately the same percent additions as previously reported for rolled sheet182 and drawn wire.3 The Scovill Manufacturing Co., Waterbury, Conn., furnished the copper and brass alloys, performed certain chemical analyses and supplied laboratory facilities where needed. Electrical requirements in surface mining can be divided into three categories: main substation, plant power, and pit distribution. A main substation may vary from a 500-kva transformer supplying 480-v power to motor-driven pumps and conveyors, to a 50,000-kva substation serving a large beneficiation plant or a large strip mining operation. Regard- less of size, it should be designed with the realization that a failure of the main substation will totally shut down the operation. Location of a main substation usually is a compromise between expense of running the incoming high-voltage transmission lines and the voltage drop of long secondary runs. Based on a geological survey for immediate and future areas of excavation, the main substation should be located as near to the center of load as possible.

This report concerns the microbial flora found throughout the surface facilities of six water-injection systems in Texas and Oklahoma. Each system is described in detail and water quality data are presented when available. Pseudomonads and sulfate-reducers (Desulfovibrio) were the predominate organisms found in the systems. The genera Sphaerotilus, Bacillus, Achromobacter, Minococcus, Clostridium, Flavobacteriurn, and Sarcina were also isolated in significant numbers. Molds, iron bacteria, sulfur bacteria and soil bacteria were found less frequently in the systems. It is concluded that a complex microbiological flora exists in oilfield water-injection systems. A tendency for waters to deteriorate in passage through solid bed filters is also noted. INTRODUCTION The injection of water into a subsurface formation is often accompanied by numerous problems, the origin and nature of which are only partially understood. During the past few years, investigators have indicated that bacteria are involved in some of these problems even though very little specific information is available concerning this matter. It is surprising that investigators working on microbiological problems in water injection have never made a complete study of the flora of these systems. The logical course to pursue is that of identifying the microbial flora and then examining each organism individually and in combination with others to determine if they produce a particular problem. The objective of the present investigation is to identify the microbial flora in water-injection systems. In addition. the quality of the water in most of the systems was determined and some observations made on the extent to which passage through surface-handling facilities affects water quality. The information derived from this study can serve as a foundation for additional basic investigations. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The microbial flora of six water-injection systems were studied at 50 sampling points. These systems are experiencing problems which may be attributable to micro-organisms, and two were being treated with antimicrobial agents at the time of this study. The samples were obtained by inoculating 1.0 ml of the water onto the different media at the sampling point. The media used for primary isolation included nutrient agar, Strokes agar, M-10-E medium and semi-solid thioglycollate medium. The cultures were returned to the laboratory, incubated at 30°C until growth occured; then, pure cultures were obtained from individual colonies. The pure cultures were identified according to standardbacteriologica1 procedures. Those organisms not fitting identification criteria exactly, even though exhibiting close similarities to known species, are listed as unidentified organisms. Membrane filters were used to make water-quality tests at intervals before and after collection of the microbiological samples. The filter discs were 47 mm in diameter with a 0.45-micron particle-size retention, and the tests were done under closed conditions at 20) psi. Membrane flow rates are plotted as increasing filtrate volumes, and the total solids contents arcs given when available. An effort was made to sample at each place in a system where a change in environment occurred. In this manner, the effect of passage through filters, tanks, hay sections, etc., on the microbial flora and water quality could be observed. RESULTS SYSTEM A This waterflood system (Fig. 1) is about four years old and daily pumps approx&ately 110,000 bbl of oil-free sour water from a 3,700-ft deep reef. The

INTRODUCTION Behavior of joints in rock and interfaces in structures and geological media subjected to static and cyclic loading play an important role in analysis and design of structures founded on rock and soil foundations. The objectives of this paper are (1) to describe a device that can permit laboratory testing of joints and interfaces under translational and torsional motions, (2) to present procedures for constitutive modelling of joints and interfaces with a typical example of modelling of a concrete-sand interface, and (3) to give brief details of the proposed research plans for cyclic testing and modelling of joints in concrete as a simulation of joints in rock. The subject of testing and modelling of interfaces and joints is wide in scope, and in view of space limitations, it is not possible to provide a comprehensive review herein. Hence, only a few references, particularly relevant to the ongoing research by the authors and co-workers are included; a review of the subject can be found in (Desai, 1981) and (Heuze and Barbour, 1982). Although there can be (minor) differences in modelling for the behavior of joints and interfaces, the basic procedures can be considered to be essentially similar. Now onwards in this paper, the term joints will be used to imply both joints and interfaces. TESTING DEVICE Appropriate laboratory (or field) testing is an important and indispensable ingredient for constitutive modelling of joints. Defor~nation twinning and transformation twinning modes most likely to be operative in Fe-Ni and Fe-Ni-C martensites have been determined using a new theory of the crystallography of deformation t~inning.~ This analysis shows that potentially important conventional and nonconventional twinning modes1 have been omitted in previous analyses. Discussion is given on the relevance of the predicted twinning modes to the lattice invariant shear associated with the martensite transformation in steels and to anomalous deformation twinning in Fe-Ni-C martensites. THE two most important criteria which appear to govern operative twinning modes in metallic structures1 are that the magnitude of the twinning shear should be small and that the twinning shear should restore the lattice or a multiple lattice in a twin orientation. The latter criterion ensures that the shuffle mechanism required to restore the structure in a twin orientation is simple. These criteria have been adhered to in the prediction of twinning modes2"6 in bcc and bct single-lattice structures with axial ratios in the range y = 1 to 1.09 as, for example, encountered in martensite occurring in steels. Refs. 2 and 3 in particular consider the martensite transformation in steels and the twinning modes in these cases relate to transformation twinning, and hence the lattice invariant shear associated with the martensite transformation. The list of twinning modes which can be compiled from these sources is incomplete and the ranges of magnitude of shear considered could be unrealistically small, particularly in the case of deformation twinning. The latter consideration is supported by the fact that twinning modes with magnitudes of shear large compared with the smallest shear consistent with a simple shuffle mechanism have been established in, for example, the single-lattice structure mercury7 and the multiple-lattice structure zirconium.&apos; In addition the anomalous deformation twins reported by Ftichrnan4 to occur in a range of Fe-Ni-C martensites still remain unexplained. It is clear that a comprehensive analysis of twinning modes likely to be operative in martensite In steels is required. The results of the application of a new theory of the crystallography of deformation twinningg to these structures are presented in this paper. The theory has been used to determine all shears which restore the lattice or a multiple lattice in a new orientation with magnitude of shear up to a required maximum. The orientation relationships between parent and twinned lattices are not restricted to the classical orientation relationships of reflection in the twin plane or a rotation of 180 deg about the shear direction. PREDICTED TWINNING MODES Twinning modes which restore all or one half of lattice points to their correct twin positions will be referred to as m = 1 and m = 2 modes, respectively. These modes are the most likely to describe operative modes in single lattice structures. The bcc m = 1 and m = 2 modes which have magnitudes of shear s in the range s < 2 and s < 1, respectively, have been given10 and are reproduced here in Tables I and 11. Detailed discussion of the crystallography of these modes and cubic modes in general will be discussed elsewhere (~evis and rocker, to be published). The four twinning elements Kl, &,ql,7)2 as well as the magnitude of shear s are given for each twinning mode, and the twinning modes are given in order of increasing shear. Two twinning modes are given in each row of the tables, the twinning mode Kl, Kz, ql, q2 and the reciprocal twinning mode with elements Kl = K,, Ki = Kl, q: = q2, and 17; = ql. The m = 1 and m = 2 twinning modes which describe twinning shears with small magnitudes of shear and simple shuffle mechanisms in bct crystals with -y = 1 to 1.09 are given in Tables I11 and IV, respectively. On increasing the symmetry of the tetragonal lattice to cubic, that is making y = 1, all modes listed in Tables 111 and IV must reduce to crystallographically equivalent variants of the modes given in Tables I and 11, respectively, or become twinning modes with both shear planes as symmetry planes in the cubic lattice and hence not considered in Tables I and 11. With the exception of this last type of mode only those tetragonal twinning modes which reduce to modes 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, and 2.2 of Tables I and I1 are considered in Tables 111 and IV. For values of y in the range -y = 1 to 1.09 the tetragonal modes and the corresponding cubic twinning modes have approximately the same magnitude of shear. P. L. Pratt (University of Birmingham, Birmingham, England)—The author has measured the hardening effect of isolated edge and screw dislocation boundaries in a remarkably elegant manner, and he proposes that the detailed structure of the boundary determines its effectiveness as a barrier to slip although "there are still unknown details of the distribution which may be extremely important." On p. 678 the author states "that for a good crystal (one having a yield of about 30 psi) a change in annealing temperature from 300" to 400 °C resulted in a negligible shift in the level of the stress-strain curve." Is this in agreement with the results of the earlier paper by Li, Washburn, and Parker8 in which such a change of temperature produced notable hardening in crystals with a yield of about 30 psi? Or were these earlier crystals, of the same nominal purity, less perfect than those used in this work? The experiment illustrated in Fig. 15, p. 681, shows that the boundary has sharpened after annealing at 400 °C, the temperature at which the hardening effect first becomes apparent. Did the author verify that no sharpening of the boundary occurred at, say, 300 °C where no hardening was found? This would seem to be an important check on the proposed mechanism, especially since zinc of this purity should polygonize at temperatures well below 400 °C within the annealing times used here. There seem to be at least two alternative explanations which could fit these facts: 1—The boundary may sharpen at 300 °C or even lower temperatures but be unable to contribute greatly to the hardening until jogged by thermal vacancies and other impurity atoms after 400 °C anneal. This mechan- ism, discussed in the earlier paper,&apos; is believed to account for the thermal hardening observed by Blank&apos;" in NaCl, as stated elsewhere: and by results from recent experiments which tend to confirm this view. 2—The dislocations in the diffuse boundary may be locked by impurity atoms at 300 °C and thus only sharpen the boundary at 400 °C with the aid of thermal vacancies. In this case it would be difficult to distinguish between the two sources of hardening (sharpening or jogging), using metal of this purity. Jack Washburn (author&apos;s reply)—The author wishes to thank Dr. Pratt for his discussion. In connection with his first comment, it should be pointed out that the temperature of testing in the present series of experiments was —196°C, whereas, in the earlier experiments he referred to,&apos; it was 20°C. Therefore, the yield values should not be directly compared. It is likely that the crystals used in the present work were initially more perfect macroscopically than the large shear specimens used previously. The small size of the test section in the kink specimens made it possible to select regions of the large crystals, from which they were acid-cut, that were free of observable small angle boundaries. The sharpening of a microscopically diffuse boundary such as that in Fig. 15 begins in zinc of this purity well below 300°C. However, it is probably not justified to conclude that because a boundary looks sharp under the microscope it has attained the ideal structure. The author agrees with Dr. Pratt that jogging of dislocation lines is one of the structural features of a small angle boundary that should be important in determining its strengthening effect. THE great development of the mines and metallurgical works of this country during the last few years, accompanied as it has been by the investment of enor¬mous sums of money in purchasing lands, and in the erection of improvements, requires that advantage should be taken of the accumulated knowledge of engi¬neers, superintendents, and others, in mastering the problems which are con¬stantly presenting themselves for our action. Among those may be mentioned the consideration of more economical systems of mining in our coal and metal¬liferous mines, improved methods of transportation above and below ground, unwatering and ventilating mines, the mechanical preparation of coal and other minerals, the various metallurgical processes, and, in fact, every question tending to the attainment of two great objects 1st. The more economical production of the useful minerals and metals. 2d. The greater safety and welfare of those employed in these industries. In European countries, where the arts of mining and metallurgy have long been the subject of the most careful study, no means have been found so effectual in attaining the end above proposed as the free interchange of experience among those actually engaged in these industries, and this object has been accomplished, mainly, through the medium of institutes, associations or societies, composed of those engaged in these occupations, and by the- periodical publication of essays or papers, communicated to such societies by their members. It must be evident to all practical men that the interchange of the varied experience of those engaged in such occupations in this country could not fail to advance very materially the desired objects; it is, therefore, proposed to establish an American Institute of Mining Engineers, which will hold its meetings periodically in the great mining and metallurgical centres, where works of interest, such as mines, machine shops, furnaces, and other metallurgical works, can be inspected, and the members exchange their views, and consult for mutual advantage upon the difficulties encountered by each; these transactions or proceedings, when published, would form a most valuable and greatly-needed addition to our professional literature. It is proposed that a meeting of those sympathizing with the object above men¬tioned shall be called for the purpose of organizing such an association, the place and time of meeting being Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and the month of April or May. Capable of processing 3500 tpd of uranium ore, the United Nuclear-Homestake Partners&apos; mill in Grants, N. M., differs considerably from the nearby mills of Anaconda and Kerr-McGee in at least two major aspects: it leaches uranium ore with an alkaline solution of Na2C03 and NaHC03 instead of sulfuric acid; and it recovers yellowcake directly by precipitation from the pregnant alkaline leach solution, without any need of ion exchange or solvent extraction circuits. A first look at the flowsheet shows that this mill has two separate grinding and leaching circuits. Reason for the double circuitry: the mill treats, on a toll basis, uranium ores for Anaconda as well as for the partnership, and it must also treat ores coming from mines separately owned by Homestake Mining Corp. and from mines owned by United Nuclear Corp.

Results of a pilot operation in the Carlsbad Basin are discussed. After hydrafracing between wells, a block of potash was removed by solution techniques. The distance between frac wells was about 200 ft, the thickness of potash mineralization, 5 ft. By proper manipulation, a feed of concentrate brine was obtained. The ex-periment showed that the thin-bedded potash could be removed by the solution techniques. The details of well construction, method of operation, and removal rates are discussed. Continental Oil Co.&apos;s laboratory research on the fundamentals of potash solution mining has been expanded by means of a series of field tests, and subjects such as well completion and hydraulic fracturing were added to the investigation. Both single-well and multi-well systems were studied in the field work. Discussion Background: The current paper discusses one field test in which potash was solution mined by a two-well system from a thin sylvinite zone. The potential economic value of solution mining evolves from (1) the use of drilled holes and solution techniques instead of excavated shafts and caverns and (2) the ability to mine both land and marine deposits through any type of overburden geology and below conventional mining depths. Recent interest has been focused on potash&apos; and other soluble minerals, such as trona. Solution extraction minerals, such as copper and uranium, are also worthy of important consideration. In addition, many of the techniques are directly applicable to the construction of horizontal underground storage carverns in salt. There are two general approaches to potash solution mining. The first is to mine on a single-well basis, in which the same well bore is used for both injection and production. This method is slow, and the areal extent may be quite limited in other than very thick ore zones. The second, and the preferred approach, is to mine on a multi-well basis in which the solvent is circulated between wells. This technique, if applied in a manner which allows the ore zone to be mined from the bottom upward, results in nearly all the solution taking place from the cavern roof. Salt removal rates, therefore, are very much higher than from a single-well system.l Wells can be interconnected into a multi-well pattern by several means. One is to join single-well caverns in the lower part of an ore zone. Another is to use the hydraulic fracturing techniques developed in the oil fields.&apos; We preferred the fracture approach because of its potential for creating the greatest area of salt exposure. Test Site Description: The field tests were conducted in New Mexico&apos;s Carlsbad Basin, where the potash deposits are flat and uniform over reasonable distances. Here, 12 potash zones are present in the massive Salado Salt section. The specific target was the Third Ore Zone which is about 4 ft thick at our location and about 1150 ft deep. The test pattern was designed in the shape of an equilateral triangle with a fourth well located in the center, 200 ft from each of the vertex wells. This configuration allowed the ore zone to be hydraulically fractured from the center well with good assurance that the fracture would intersect the bore of at least one outside well. Several multi-well test patterns would be available if the fracture connected all wells. Well Completion: Surface casing was set in the top of the Salado Salt at 600 ft to shut off water flows from the surface sands, and the salt section was drilled and diamond-cored to a point below the Third Ore Zone. A drilling fluid made of diesel oil with a small amount of emulsified water was used to drill and core the salt. This fluid was highly successful in preventing enlargement of the drilled hole and in promoting good core recovery. The three outside wells were completed by setting 51/2-in. casing at the base of a streak of anhydrite about 20 ft above the ore zone. Pipe was set high so that the intersection point of the fracture could be detected even if the fracture migrated above the ore zone as it progressed outward from the center well. The center well itself was completed by cementing 51/2-in. casing through the Third Ore Zone. Cement bond logs run on the center well have shown excellent bonding. Fracturing Practice: A mechanical tool was used to cut a notch through the casing and into the salt at a point about 1 ft below the ore zone in the center well. The purpose of this notch was to fix the point of fracture entry into the salt. The fracturing was done with water at injection rtaes as high as 30 bbl per min. The salt parted at 1450 psi; and it required only 5 min for the fracture to reach the well which was 200 ft to the south. It took about 5 min more to reach the other two wells. Caliper surveys were run to locate the point of fracture entry in the three outside wells. The fracture appears to have drifted downward slightly, entering the outside wells at the top of a streak of carnallite 8 or 9 ft below the ore zone. A cross section of the wells selected for the multi-well test is shown in Fig. 1. The figure includes KC1 values based on core analysis and the trace of the fracture plane between the wells.

A study of the fracture behavior of unidirectwn-ally solidified Cu-Cr eutectic alloy was performed. Fractured whiskers, grain boundaries, and the interface between proeutectic Cr dendrites and the Cu matrix were the predominant failure initiation sites where grain size was larger. Strain induced void formation was restricted at lower solidification rates. This was attributed to a lack of adequate plastic constraint and a probable preferred orientation. A modification of the Crussard et al. model is presented to explain the appearance of "elongated dimples" on the shear fracture surface. A Cu-Cr alloy containing about 1.8 at. pct Cr solidifies by a eutectic reaction forming filamentary crystals of chromium within a continuous copper solid solution matrix.&apos; Webb and Forgeng2 have shown by bend tests that the extracted chromium filaments, which are ordinarily curved and branched (due to random solidification), have the high strengths associated with whiskers. If an ingot of the eutectic alloy is unidirectionally solidified and appropriate control exercised over the thermal gradient, growth rate, and impurity level, the chromium fibers can be forced to solidify as fibers which are substantially parallel to the growth direction, Fig. 1. Uniaxial tensile tests on these straight chromium fibers extracted from controlled ingots3 have confirmed the earlier bend test results on curved fibers. Combining the facts that the strength and modulus of the chromium filaments are higher than the more ductile copper matrix and assuming that a "good bond" exists between the two phases, the Cu-Cr controlled eutectic system fulfills the requirements for effective fiber reinforcement of ductile matrices as established by studies on fiber glass reinforced plastics and other two-phase systems.4 Therefore, it was decided to study the fracture characteristics of morphologically simple specimens of chromium fiber reinforced copper (i.e., specimens of the controlled eutectic with substantially parallel reinforcing fibers) with the objective of establishing the dominant aspects of fracture. PREVIOUS WORK Comparatively little work has been done to understand the manner in which ductile alloys fail be- cause of the limited demand for this kind of information. Ordinarily ductility is specified for safety or similar reasons and when a part deforms plastically its useful life is terminated. In recent years, however, a number of investigators have begun to

The individual projections for large mines in the Pittsburgh coal seam in northern West Virginia are discussed with emphasis on roof control and ventilation requirements. All four mines use continuous miners with panel belts and rail for main line haulage. Both development and retreat-type mining are covered. There are a variety of mining projections being used currently in northern West Virginia. To discuss each would be impossible, so an arbitrary cross section has been selected in an attempt to indicate a fair degree of representation. Four mines, hereinafter referred to as Mines A, B, C and Dl will be discussed separately. The greater part of northern West Virginia coal production is mined from the Pittsburgh seam. This is the seam worked by all the mines discussed here. Although the coal bed outcrops at the eastern and southernmost points, these mines are all working in a depth ranging from 400 to 1400 ft below the surface. Some steep gracles have been encountered but are only considered local in nature; the overall average dip of the seam is 1 1/2 % northwest. In each of the operations the particular mining scheme used has proved advantageous, since they have been designed to satisfy particular equipment and/or physical condition requirements. So regardless whether such projections utilize a partial or full recovery principle, the productivity performances appear better than average. MINE A Full retreat is the basic mining approach for mine A, although current mining is primarily in the entry-driving stages to expand territory in preparation for pillar work. Only one section unit now on retreat. The average clean coal production at this mine is 7000 tons per day. Initially, a ripper-type miner was used for development at this mine. But with a rather weak roof overlying the coal bed and the greater horizontal span left at the top by a ripper machine, roof control became a critical problem.
