Any information that will increase the accuracy of our knowledge of the conditions prevailing in petroleum reservoirs should be of direct value in the determination of the proper operating technique as well as in the estimation of reserves and of ultimate production. The obvious method of obtaining this information is by studying a sample of the reservoir rock and its contents. In any such study, the problem of primary importance and maximum difficulty is that of getting the core to the surface in such a manner that its original fluid content is undisturbed, which has so far proved to be an impossible task. Though it might be rash to say this will never be done, it is certainly safe to assume that a, method for the recovery of a core at the surface in its undisturbed original state may not be developed in the immediate future, and certainly will not be forthcoming without a great deal of costly experimentation. Therefore any information that may be obtained that will help to correlate the state of a core (its fluid saturation) at the surface with its condition at the time it was drilled should be of value to the petroleum industry. The experiments described in this paper were undertaken with the purpose of determining, if possible, any relationship that might exist between the saturation of a core at the surface and its original fluid content. No consideration has been given to the question of contamination by penetration of drilling water, since this problem has been extensively studied by other investigators.1-3 Furthermore, it was regarded as outside the scope of these experiments, which were concerned only with the effect of pressure reduction upon the liquid content of cores. In an experimental study of this sort involving a large number of variables, accurate control of all factors is very important. The essential and obvious procedure is to vary systematically one factor or condition while keeping all the others constant, which necessarily involves a rather protracted and sometimes tedious experimental program. ABOUT 55 attended the general session of the Nonferrous Metallurgy Committee on Wednesday afternoon. In opening the proceedings the Chairman, Frank G. Breyer, served notice of his intention to make an early start this year in securing papers for his committee. He voiced the thought that more importance should be attached to the prompt publication of data on new advances in practice; the record of technical progress should be written before the sharpness of the current image becomes blurred by the veil of time. As an illustration, Mr. Breyer declared that great strides have been made in the zinc industry during the past nine years, whereby zinc ore is converted directly to the oxide in large mechanical furnaces, yet the literature is confined to patents.

ONE of the interesting-though not unnatural-features of the whole Porphyry Copper development is the way in which the history of each property dovetails with that of one or more of the others. The same names keep cropping up as one digs into the accounts of events from 1900 to 1915. J. Parke Channing made examinations of Nevada, Ray, and Inspiration, as well as of Miami. Henry Krumb did important work in the early stages of the exploitation of Utah, Nevada, Ray, Braden, and Inspiration. Pope Yeatman was favorably impressed with the Braden property before he had ever visited it, when he saw a batch of Braden ore sent to the United States for testing. It reminded him immediately of Nevada Consolidated ore: indeed, he was unwilling at first to believe that it came from South America. And it was while working on the examination at Utah Copper that Philip Wiseman became enthused with the possibilities of the Ray mines. In 1905, Mr. Krumb, under the general direction of A. Chester Beatty, was strenuously engaged at Bingham, Utah, in arriving at an answer to this question: Should or should not the Guggenheim interests back Jackling to the tune of several million dollars to build the big concentrators at Gafield? Seeley W. Mudd was the Guggenheim engineer on the Pacific coast and in that capacity was indirectly responsible for the work at Bingham. At his suggestion Wiseman came up from Los Angeles as one of Krumb's assistants-at $5 per day, incidentally. A little later Mr. Mudd, in Utah on one of his visits, went down to Bingham. That evening in the old Hills Hotel in Markham Gulch he was going over reports with Mr. Krumb. Wiseman and some of the other engineers on Krumb's staff were present. Diffusion of zinc and germanium in liquid silver is measured in the temperature range 975" to 1400°C by use of the capillary-reservoir technique. The ex-perinzental results are discussed in terms of the fluctuation and the "hole" theories of liquid diffusion, assunzing the solute as a point charge equal to the difference in the valences of the solute and solvent atoms. The additional coulombic interaction term due to the excess solute charge is evaluated in terms of the Thomas-Fenni approximation. The theoretical and experimental results agree with both the fluctuation and "hole" theories of liquid diffusion. No perceptible effect on solute diffusion in liquid silver of the size difference between the solute and solvent atoms/ions is apparent. DIFFUSION in liquid silver of electropositive solutes indium, tin, antimony, and homovalent gold has been previously reported by Leak and Swalin1 and Gupta,' respectively. These solutes have nearly the same atomic size but differ principally from one another in excess valence (+2, +3, +4, respectively). The observed differences in the temperature dependence and the rate of solute diffusion were explained in terms of an added coulombic interaction between the solute and the solvent atoms. In the case of diffusion of gold in liquid silver, the data were found to be consistent with an effective valence for gold of -0.85, as proposed by Le Claire.3 Recently, Wang and Gupta4 have reported a study of diffusion of ruthenium, iron, and cobalt in liquid silver. The results of diffusion of these solutes and their temperature dependence were found consistent with the hole theories and the fluctuation theories of liquid diffusion, if ruthenium, iron, and cobalt were diffusing in liquid silver with relative valences -2, -1.3, and -0.5, respectively, instead of -3, -3, and -2 as suggested by the relative position of these elements in the Periodic Table of Elements. Furthermore, the predicted valences for these solutes were observed to be consistent with the sparsely available information on the magnetic properties of some of the dilute alloys of copper and silver with these solutes. In theoretical calculations of solute diffusivity, the solute was assumed as a point excess charge equal to the difference in the valences of the solute and solvent atoms. Both the assumption of a point excess solute charge and the use of the Thomas-Fermi approximation to calculate the potential of a solute charge are less precise for the case of electronegative solutes. Therefore, it was not possible to infer from the data on ruthenium, iron, and cobalt an effect, if any, on solute diffusion of the relative differences in either the Period or the size of the solute and solvent atoms or the solute atoms themselves. A study of the diffusion of Period 4 elements, specifically zinc and germanium was, therefore, undertaken since zinc and germanium, respectively, have relative valences of +1 and +3 in liquid silver and the data obtained on diffusion of these solutes could be compared with the available data on diffusion of Period 5 electropositive solutes, indium, tin, and antimony in liquid silver. From such a comparison, it was hoped to learn something about the effect, if any, of the ion size or the structure of the ion core on impurity diffusion in liquid silver. Would you briefly describe how you chose the minerals industry and reflect upon some of your earliest experiences? I wish that I could say that I had a well-formulated career plan early in life and that mining engineering was always foremost in it, but I cannot, In fact, I was quite indecisive before I finally chose my life's vocation. But in another respect, I am glad my career unfolded in the manner it did because it gave me a better insight into advising others on career opportunities. Probably the greatest problem confronting our youth, and the one I find preys upon their minds the most, is their inability to select a career path early in life. This indecision frequently has a deep psychological effect upon them and they become down on themselves. Therefore, it fortifies them somewhat to learn that others who have become successful in their careers had difficulties choosing a career path early in life. However, while assuring young people that an early choice is not absolutely essential for success, I caution them to work toward as early a decision as possible.

A. Gittins and R. C. Gifkins (University of Mel-houvne)— Evidence from somewhat similar experiments to those described in this paper has led us to the conclusion that possibility 2) of the four listed on p. 319 is a description of what happens in grain boundary sliding. That is, sliding is limited by accommodation deformation, it being necessary to the Continuance of sliding that this accommodation should take place. An example of such accommodation, though probably not the most important, is fold formation at triple points. The evidence and arguments for this point of view are set out in Refs. 14 to 16. In particular, an experiment with a lead bicrys-tall5 seems to support point 2) rather than 3). In creep of this specimen it was found that at least 90 pct of the extension of a zone 0.3 mm wide at the boundary was supplied by sliding at the boundary. The sliding was localized in a region at the boundary very much smaller than 0.3 mm, in fact, in a region too narrow to resolve optically. In poly crystalline Specimens&apos; there appears to be a surface effect, as found by Rachinger," but it appears that this may not manifest itself at low strains. "Low strains" means <10 pct for a Pb-TI alloy, <2.5 pct for magnesium or "Magnox" A12 alloy, or <40 pct for a 0 brass. Up to this extension the sliding, measured by the mean vertical step at boundaries, is proportional to extension. We are able to say this with some confidence, since the error bars on our points are statistically derived. Our results would lead us to think that the error bars on other work, including that of Mullendore and Grant, are much too large at low strains to show this

In coal preparation plants, as in many industrial operations where raw materials are handled, nuisance, health, and equipment maintenance problems arising from the generation of dust are inevitable. Devices for the control or collection of dust are therefore essential components of the plant process equipment. The objective of a dust collector is to separate solid particles from a gas stream in which they are suspended. Various types of devices can be employed to accomplish this end. The choice of the type of collecting device for a given application depends on principles of the behavior of fine particles and on factors associated with the properties of the dust (such as particle size, density, shape) and the suspending medium (such as density, humidity, viscosity, velocity). Particles suspended in a gas stream are acted upon by a number of forces including the buoyant force and frictional resistance of the suspending medium, which tend to keep the particles in suspension, and the force of gravity which tends to impart a relative motion between the particles and the fluid. The smaller the particle the greater the tendency for it to remain in suspension and, thus, the more difficult it becomes to collect the particle, or separate it from the fluid stream. To effect separation, therefore, some external force must be applied on the dust particle. When dust particles in a gas stream are acted upon by an external force, for example, gravity, centrifugal force, or an electrostatic field, the particles will be accelerated in the direction induced by the force. Because of a relative motion between the particles and the gas stream, a frictional resistance will be set up that will limit the velocity of the particle toward the force. To effect collection of the particles, this velocity must be great enough that the particles are trapped by some collection medium before the gas can transport the particles out of the collecting equipment. The most common physical mechanisms employed by collecting devices include gravity, inertial or centrifugal force, impingement, and electrostatic fields.

However, the large quantities of water used in metal and coal mines for dust control and suppression pose serious operational problems in water soluble ores, such as salt, trona, or gypsum. This paper reviews the strategies to suppress and collect dust on cutter machines and face drills where water usage must be restricted to very low flow rates - typically 3.78 L/min (1 gpm) or less.

Despite the many industrial uses, the world market for silver as a commodity is far from free, being dominated by the U.S. Government both through acts of Congress and by policy of the Treasury Department. This discussion will consider aspects of supply, demand, and price with a view to the future. Changes in Sources of Supply: The world&apos;s peak production of silver, 278 million oz, was in 1937. In the 1850&apos;s world production was about 30 million oz, having risen from a yearly average of 11 million oz for the first half of the century. From 1860 to 1940 there was a steady rise, broken only by World War I and the depression of the early 1930&apos;s.

IT was pointed out in an earlier paper1 that our understanding of the atomic mechanism by which diffusion occurs in metallic alloys is scarcely in an advanced state. This unsatisfactory condition is the result not of any lack of interest, but of the difficulty of designing experiments that will yield suitable data. The diffusion coefficient of an alloy, measured in the usual way, is simply a number specifying the rate of homogenization of a nonhomogeneous metal; this number, of itself, can furnish neither the rate at which the individual atoms move nor information as to the mechanism by which they move. It does not necessarily follow, however, that such information cannot he obtained, even if the path to be followed is still not clear. Much success has been attained in the study of diffusion in ionic crystals. A number of experiments, for which there are few counterparts in connection with metals, yields information often indicating a detailed mechanism by which diffusion probably occurs. From such work, quite acceptable theories of lattice imperfections have been developed by Wagner, Schottky, Frenkel, Jost and others.2 It is postulated that real crystals of stoichiometric composition contain, in equilibrium, certain imperfections of which the most important types are: (I) vacant cation sites, with an equal number of interstitial ions; (2) vacant anion sites, with an equal number of interstitial ions; (3) equal numbers of anions and cations in interstitial positions; (4) equal numbers of vacant anion and cation sites. The classification of a particular crystal according to this scheme then follows from studies of the variation of electrical conductivity with pressure of the electronegative component surrounding the crystal, with ion size, and with temperature; other physical phenomena, such as the Hall effect, have aided in establishing the classification. The relative mobility of the anion and cation may be determined by chemical analysis of the salt at the electrodes following electrolysis. With such information, and knowing that one ion never occupies the lattice site normally belonging to an ion of opposite sign, it is usually possible to ascertain the diffusion mechanism. It is clear that the same experiments are not applicable to metal crystals, and substitute experiments that yield as much information have not yet been devised. Much can be learned, however, about the mobilities of the two* kinds of atoms in alloys by the use of radioactive metals as indicators. Only one such experiment has been performed in the past. When separate treatment of sand and slime by cyanidation was the rule rather than the exception, as now, and when gravity concentration, rather than flotation, was the accepted method of dressing copper, lead, zinc and other base ores, classification was a separate step in ore treatment. Today, however, the picture is much different. The trend toward all-slime treatment in cyanidation and flotation has made fine closed-circuit grinding essential, and the mechanical classifier is of equal importance with the mill in the preparation of an ore for its treatment. Actually, a mill and classifier are a unit, a variation in either affecting the desired results. In developing this thesis—the mutual interdependence of the rotary mill and the classifier in modern fine-grinding practice—it would be well to consider first the different types of classifiers and mills in use today, their scope and limitations and the factors governing their selection. From such a basis as this a logical approach may be made to modern closed-circuit fine grinding, the evolution of multiple-stage grinding practice, the relation of the classifier to the mill and, finally, the trend to higher and higher circulating sand loads in the mill-classifier circuit. Such data as are germane to the subject will be given to support the thesis advanced. DURING the winter of 1937, the writer visited a West Virginia stone quarry at which the overburden is stripped hydraulically. The quarry is in a bed of limestone, about 200 ft. thick, which outcrops on a hillside above a small river; the quarry face is 175 ft. high. The top of the stone is cut in all directions by erosion channels, which are filled with a tough, red clay. Some of the larger channels are 30 ft. deep and 8 ft. wide. The thickness of the clay overburden ranges from a few inches to 10 ft., the average being estimated as less than 3 feet. The topography of the district is rugged, and the hillside above the quarry face is not suited to the use of the usual mechanical methods of moving dirt. Until hydraulicking was started 10 years ago, the over- burden was dug by hand labor, dumped to the quarry floor and transported to the dump in quarry cars. Cleaning deep channels was a slow and expensive process. When hydraulicking was started, the top of the quarry face was over 200 ft. above the level of the river. The pipe line was carried in a semi- circle around the top of the quarry about 200 ft. from the face and about 50 ft. above it. As there is no adequate supply of water above the quarry, the water must be pumped from the river. As quarrying progressed the pipe line was moved until the discharge points are now over 300 ft. above the river. Water is pumped from the river by a four-stage centrifugal pump having a 5-in. intake and a 4-in. discharge. It is direct-connected to a 200-hp., 2300-volt, 1760-r.p.m. induction motor. At 1760 r.p.m. the rated capacity of the pump is 750 gal. per minute under a head of 600 ft. The pump is installed in a house of frame construction on the river bank, about 10 ft. above normal water level, which also houses the pump for the mill-water supply. Above the pumps are hoisting bays into which the motors are raised whenever the river reaches flood stage. An 8-in. suction line, equipped with a strainer and a foot valve, takes the water from a concrete sump at the edge of the river. The pipe line from the pump consists of 1750 ft. of 8-in. spiral steel flanged pipe and 800 ft. of 4-in. spiral steel flanged pipe. The connection from the pump

INTRODUCTION Published laboratory procedures used by the major crusher manufacturers for estimating crusher size are based upon techniques developed in the mid 1940&apos;s. Specifically, the two largest U.S. crusher manufacturers are using the Bond impact procedure. Although the procedure is still in use, there is little confidence in the results. Unless the laboratory results fall within a preconceived range, personal experience is used for selecting the number of crushers and connected horsepower (Coleman, 1978). There have been numerous theoretical studies of the communition of particles. However, no procedure has been widely acclaimed for predicting crusher power requirements. Experimental studies have included breakage by slow compression, slow speed impact and high speed impact. Theoretical results have increased our knowledge of the comminution process, but the procedures have not been capable of analyzing the complex mechanism of industrial crushing machines. The purpose of this chapter is to review the empirical crushing procedures that have been used, including advantages and disadvantages. A new procedure which has been in development at Allis-Chalmers Corp. from 1977 to 1982 is detailed. Actual results of the new procedure on a concentrator feasibility study are included. EXPERIMENTAL GOALS The goals of a laboratory crushability procedure are accurate predictions of: (1) Rock crushability, measured as energy per unit mass. (2) Crusher product size analysis. A procedure capable of predicting these parameters should be inexpensive and require a minimum amount of sample. CRUSHABILITY TESTS Bond Impact Procedure F. C. Bond (1946) detailed the development of the pendulum impact device that is still used by the leading crusher manufacturers (Bond; Rexnord, 1976). DURING the last several years the authors have been conducting tests on a tensile machine that autographically records load-elongation data. In certain tests at elevated temperatures on face-centered cubic, hexagonal close-packed, and body-centered cubic materials (binary alloys of nickel, zirconium, and iron), the load-elongation curve as shown in Fig. 1 reaches a maximum load (Pmax,) at relatively small amounts of strain and a large amount of elongation occurs subsequently with a continuously decreasing load, until finally localized necking and fracture take place. This early maximum load behavior has been found without the accompanying evidence of localized necking as has been assumed by some, or of evidence of cracking as observed by others.&apos; This behavior has also been observed by Nadai and Manjoinez whose results are in good agreement with ours. The prior strain, strain rate, test temperature, and crystal structure affect the observations. The influence of prior strain was observed in tests on unalloyed zirconium at 300°C in which specimens containing large amounts of prior strain (cold work) exhibited the type of curve shown in Fig. 1. No localized necking was observed after strain as much as that of point B. Annealed and recrystallized specimens of the same material showed a load-elongation curve with maximum load occurring after considerable strain hardening and at the beginning of localized necking. Interrupted tests (Fig. 2) show no loss in strength because of recovery or recrys-tallization during an interval at temperature without load. Recovery under stress such as found by Wood and Suiter3 in aluminum is now being investigated as one possible explanation. The strain rate is a contributing variable as shown in Fig. 3, a test on high purity nickel. Here the strain rate was decreased by a factor of ten during a test in which the maximum load was reached at a small strain. The slope of the true stress-true strain curve was positive with the more rapid strain rate and negative with the slower strain rate. In many binary ferrites an added effect of temperature has been observed. Fig. 4 shows the load-elongation plots for a binary ferritic alloy containing 2 pct Mo. The slope of the small portion of the stress-strain curve obtained at a strain rate of 0.01 mhr1 changes sign from negative to positive on going

An electrical model study has been mode to estimate the effect of horizontal fractures in thick reservoirs on pattern conductivity. For the patterns studied, it is shown that fracturing all the wells in the pattern in-creases the conductivity considerably more than frac-turing only single wells. For certain conditions one large fracture is more effective in increasing conductivity than several fractures of half the radius. Particularly in thick reservoirs and with large fractures, the center of the pay is found to be more responsive than other locations. For the seven-spot pattern fracturing the center well is more effective in increasing pattern con-ductivity than fracturing all outer wells with fractures of the same size. INTRODUCTION Although commercial fracturing has been used for some time very little quantitative information is known about the effects of fractures on reservoir behavior. The purpose of this work was to estimate the effect of horizontal fractures in thick reservoirs on the con-ductivity of various flooding and cycling patterns.2 Circular fractures originating at the wellbore and extending symmetrically into the pay were considered. ANALYSIS Electrical models were used in making this study. Horizontal fractures were simulated by copper sheets shaped like the fractures and of a proportional size; the wellbore was simulated by a copper wire. A dilute salt solution served as a conducting medium. A con-ductivity bridge was used to measure the conductivities of the various patterns studied. EFFECT OF HORIZONTAL FRACTURES ON CONDUCTIVITY Fig. 1 shows the effect on square and staggered line drive patterns of horizontal fractures located in the center of the pay. The model is shown schematically in the insert. The upper and lower groups of lines show the effect on conductivity when all wells are fractured, and when only one well is fractured, respectively. In general, pattern conductivities are substantially improved by fracturing all wells. Fig. 2 shows the effect of multiple horizontal frac-tures on the conductivity of a line-drive pattern. At

DuRing the winter of 1937, the writer visited a West Virginia stone quarry at which the overburden is stripped hydraulically. The quarry is in a bed of limestone, about 200 ft. thick, which outcrops on a hillside above a small river; the quarry face is 175 ft. high. The top of the stone is cut in all directions by erosion channels, which are filled with a tough, red clay. Some of the larger channels are 30 ft. deep and 8 ft. wide. The thickness of the clay overburden ranges from a few inches to 10 ft., the average being estimated as less than 3 feet. The topography of the district is rugged, and the hillside above the quarry face is not suited to the use of the usual mechanical methods of moving dirt. Until hydraulicking was started 10 years ago, the overburden was dug by hand labor, dumped to the quarry floor and transported to the dump in quarry cars. Cleaning deep channels was a slow and expensive process. When hydraulicking was started, the top of the quarry face was over 200 ft. above the level of the river. The pipe line was carried in a semicircle around the top of the quarry about 200 ft. from the face and about 50 ft. above it. As there is no adequate supply of water above the quarry, the water must be pumped from the river. As quarrying progressed the pipe line was moved until the discharge points are now over 300 ft. above the river. Water is pumped from the river by a four-stage centrifugal pump having a 5-in. intake and a 4-in. discharge. It is direct-connected to a 200-hp., 2300-volt, 1760-r.p.m. induction motor. At 1760 r.p.m. the rated capacity of the pump is 750 gal. per minute under a head of 600 ft. The pump is installed in a house of frame construction on the river bank, about 10 ft. above normal water level, which also houses the pump for the mill-water supply. Above the pumps are hoisting bays into which the motors are raised whenever the river reaches flood stage. An 8-in. suction line, equipped with a strainer and a foot valve, takes the water from a concrete sump at the edge of the river. The effect of four different second-phase additions on the strength of composite alloys with a common matrix was investigated. The four compositions each consisted of 85 pct by volume of silver with additions of 15 pct of either tungsten, molybdenum, tungsten carbide, or nickel. These particular additives were chosen because of their low mutual solid solubilities with silver at room temperature, the alloys consisting essentially of a dispersion strengthened silver matrix in which the second phase is distributed randomly. Test specimens were prepared by a powder metallurgy procedure consisting of ball milling the mixed powders, compacting, and sintering at 920°C for 1 hr in hydrogen. The constituent powders were of CP quality and of particle size between 2 and 10 ?. The compacts were subsequently hot pressed at 1000 psi and 1400° in an Inconel die, coined at room temperature at 60,000 psi and finally annealed and outgassed in vacuum at 800°F. The microstructures of the alloys are shown in Fig. 1, and the microscopically observed porosity grade was A-2 or better as evaluated by ASTM Recommended Practice B 276-54. The properties of the sintered compacts are listed in Table I, and the load-deformation curves in bending are shown in Fig. 2. The samples, of rectangular cross section, were loaded at the center of 58 in. span, and the reported stress was calculated on the basis of linearly elastic behavior in order to allow the comparison of specimens of slightly different dimensions. It is apparent that the tungsten, molybdenum, and tungsten carbide alloys exhibit very similar deformation curves. The moduli of elasticity were determined from the slopes of the stress-deflection curves at small loads. The measured values agree quite well with those calculated by the strength of materials approximation proposed by Paul1 for the elastic constants of mixtures, the calculated values being 15.0, 15.0, 17.4, and 13.4 million psi, respectively, for the tungsten, molybdenum, tungsten carbide, and nickel combinations with silver. The strength of the Ag-Ni composition is appreciably lower than that of the other three alloys. The discrepancy between the two groups is accounted for by the following characteristics of deformation and failure which were observed microscopically during the tests: A) The deformation of the W, Mo, and WC alloys did not involve the second phase particles to any appreciable extent. Slip and fracture took place in the silver-rich matrix alone, although the fracture path generally skirted the particles by favoring the phase boundaries. The deformation proceeded according to the following sequence: 1) formation of small, discontinuous microcracks in areas of the matrix adjacent to a particle, 2) general slip in the matrix and extension of cracks, 3) failure of specimens by propagation of cracks through matrix. The near coincidence of the 3 load-deflection curves suggests that the nature of the second phase particles does not decisively influence the plastic behavior of composite alloys of this composition as long as the particles do not undergo any considerable deformation themselves. B) A markedly different behavior was exhibited by the Ag-Ni composition where the relatively low flow strength is associated with the low yield strength of the nickel grains. Slip in the nickel grains was first observed at a stress of approximately 10,000 psi, although failure, at a later stage, took place by the propagation of cracks through the matrix. The ductility of this aggregate, in which both components deform plastically, is appreciably greater than that of the elastic-plastic composites. In summary: 1) The measured values of the moduli of elasticity of the composite alloys under discussion are in good agreement with the "strength of materials" approximation proposed by Paul.&apos; 2) The overall plastic behavior of these particle-strengthened alloys is unaffected by the nature of the second phase particles, if the latter remain elastic.
