THE system Ti-CI- has been studied by several investigators." ' Though titanium and chromium are completely miscible at high temperatures, an intermediate phase of the approximate atomic proportions TiCr, has been identified at various compositions between 60 and 68 wt pct Cr. The structure of this phase was established as the cubic C15 (MgCu2) type with 24 atoms per unit cell and a lattice parameter 6.929 kX.2 During a study of the ternary system, Ti-Mo-Cr,5 the existence of a high temperature modification of the TiCr, phase was discovered. In a series of alloys annealed at 1300°C and containing from 60 to 70 wt pct Cr and 5 pct Mo, a new phase was present which did not correspond to either ß solid solution or TiCr,. By trial, the new phase was identified to be of the hexagonal C14 (MgZn2) structure with 12 atoms per unit cell. Further work showed that the hexagonal structure was. in fact, also present in binary Ti-Cr alloys quenched from high temperatures. To make the identification more certain, the intensities of the various reflections were calculated assuming a composition TiCr2 and C14 structure. Table I lists reflection planes, interplanar distances, calculated intensities, and a comparison of these values with the lines of a binary Ti-Cr alloy (66 pct Cr) annealed for 20 min at 1385°C and water quenched. Since high angle lines were more diffuse, the correspondence between visually observed and calculated intensities was not as good at these angles. Lattice parameters were computed to be a = 4.922 kX, c = 7.945, c/a :- 1.614. The corresponding interatomic distances are: titanium to titanium distance, 3.00:, kx, chromium to chromium distance, 2.43, kX, titanium to chromium distance, 2.88,, kX. These compare to 3.00, 2.45, and 2.87 kX in the cubic phase, respectively.' The atomic positions in the C14 structure are as follows: Titanium 1/3, 2/3, Z; 1/3, 2/3, 1/2: 2/3, 1/3, i; 2/3, 1/3, (1/2-z); Chromium 0, 0, 0: 0, 0, 1/2; 2x, 2, 1/4; 232, x, %; X, 22, 1/4; X, 2x, 3/4; x. x, 1/4; x, x, 3/4; The values of x and z were calculated for the alloy mentioned and found as follows: z — 0.061, x = 0.165. The values assumed in the intensity calculations were those for an ideal close-packed lattice or z = 1/16, x = 1/6. Work in the Ti-Mo-Cr system indicates that y2 the hexagonal modification of TiCr2, is the stable phase above 1300°C, while y1 with the cubic structure is stable below 1000°C. X-ray examination of a number of alloys annealed at intermediate temperatures showed that the hexagonal and cubic phases can coexist. Alloys quenched from 1000°C and annealed at 1100" and 1200°C showed small amounts of y2 at the higher temperature. A considerable amount of y, seemed present, however, in cast alloys annealed at 1100°C. It further appears that there is a small but definite solubility range for both phases in the ternary system. HYDROGEN solubility and linear contraction measurements were made at constant temperature on an alloy of titanium of constant oxygen-to-titanium molal ratio but variable hydrogen content. A cylindrical specimen of titanium (0.25 by 1.6 in.) containing 0.75 at. pct 0 and less than 0.03 at. pct N was cast from a master button of iodide process titanium which had been alloyed with titanium dioxide. Four vacuum fusion analyses, which were made along the length of the cylinder after the hydrogen solubility studies were made, revealed a variation of oxygen content of less than 0.02 at. pct. The specimen was introduced into a quartz furnace tube, annealed and outgassedat 1050"~ for about 1 hr, and then held at 800" * 0.5" for about 30 hr, during which latter time experimental data were taken. The leak rate to the furnace chamber was not sufficient to contaminate the specimen during the run as determined by leak-rate studies and vacuum fusion analyses for oxygen and nitrogen before and after the runs. The furnace chamber was attached to a modified Sieverts apparatus used to introduce measured quantities of purified hydrogen to the specimen. A quartz pushrod transmitted changes in length of the specimen to a Chevenard dilatometer. The push-rod passed through a vacuum grease seal to the dilatometer which amplified motion of the rod by a factor of 319. During hydrogen addition, the pushrod did not contact the specimen. Measured quantities of hydrogen were added to the specimen and equilibrium hydrogen pressures recorded as a function of hydrogen content. The solubility data, which appear in Fig. 1, agree well with a separate investigation made with a different apparatus. The solubility limit of the hcp a phase appears as an abrupt discontinuity in slope at 3.4 at. pct H. The solubility plot has been extended as a dashed line at this discontinuity in order to emphasize the discontinuity. The hydrogen content at which bcc P appears is not clearly defined. An arrow indicates solubility data were taken upon hydrogen addition. Upon reaching the arbitrary maximum hydrogen content of the run, the quartz pushrod was pressed against the specimen in order to record the change in length with hydrogen removal. A pressure of about 100 g per sq cm was required to overcome the friction of the vacuum seal in order to obtain reproducible linear contraction data. The contraction ratio ~2/1", change in length divided by original length, was set equal to zero for the maximum hydrogen content. The relative contraction of the specimen was observed upon removal of hydrogen in the following manner. The system was opened to the pumps for a few seconds and an unknown quantity of hydrogen was removed. The system was then isolated from the pumps by closing a stopcock and allowed to return to equilibrium. When the temperature returned to 800°C, the pressure stabilized, and contraction ceased, measurements of contraction and pressure were made. The hydrogen content of the specimen was then deduced by measuring the equilibrium PIydrogen pressure and referring to the solubility plot. Linear contraction was then plotted against interpolated values of atomic percent hydrogen. The justification for this procedure is the established reversibility of the hydrogen equilibrium.' Uniaxial compression was assumed to have no effect on hydrogen pressure. The isothermal linear contraction data are plotted on Fig. 1. An arrow indicates data were taken upon removal of hydrogen. The solubility limits of the two phase a i /3 region can be identified by discontinuities ill slope of the dilatometric plot at 9.1 and 3.4 at. pct H, agreeing well with other studies.' Dashed extensions of the plots emphasize the discontinuities. Isothermal studies of expansion made upon hydrogen addition gave curves of much smaller slope and less pronounced discontinuities. Broadly, their field of usefulness is restricted to work in which their long range of action permits them to operate economically, and which other, possibly more conventional, excavating units cannot do. Both of these machines dig or lift material and transport it to a remote dumping point. They combine these two functions in a single machine, nearly always in a single straight-line motion. The purpose of this paper is to examine the important features that distinguish the machines in this group from each other, as well as from other groups. The Machines The "power drag scraper" is a long-range excavating machine that employs a bottomless drag scraper operated back and forth between digging and dumping points by two haulage cables. The typical arrangement is that of Fig. 1. This is the "slusher" of the underground mine, as well as the "dragline scraper" of the sand and gravel industry, and other open-pit mining operations.

It frequently happens in engineering and mining situations that "bad" rock is encountered which consists of rock broken up into blocks a few inches or less in diameter by a network of intersecting joints. These joints may be open, or filled by veins of solid material, or covered with weathering products. Essentially, the material consists of an aggregate of small interlocking blocks. In such circumstances, major joint systems usually can be recognised and studied, but there are probably many minor planes of weakness which may cause the blocks to be of almost random shape. It is extremely difficult to determine the properties of such materials. Measurements on small specimens give the properties of the constituent rock and not the jointed material. At the other extreme, the material has occasionally been tested as loose aggregate in large triaxial pots, but this gives no information about the strengthening effect of the interlocking of the small blocks of rock. One simple approach, which has been much used, is to regard the rock as randomly jointed on a small scale and to apply soil mechanics theory to it. In this case, the normal and shear stress at failure are related by [ ] where the coefficient of friction p and the cohesion c will be those of the individual joints. Even in very bad rock, it is usually possible to drill core in small diameters of 1 to 2 in. which will contain a number of joints, both open and filled. The testing of such joints provides one simple method of determining some of the properties of closely jointed rock and will be discussed in detail in the next section. Calculations based on Eg. 1 with values of c and µ obtained in this way may be expected to give a lower limit for the strength of structures in rock.

It is known qualitatively that the recrystallization behavior of platinum is dependent upon the amount and particularly the nature of impurities present, the amount of prior cold-work and the annealing time and temperature, but published data are limited. A study of the effects of cold-work and annealing temperature on the hardness of a sample of very pure platinum was undertaken to supply part of this information. Conclusions 1. The platinum used in the experiments had a probable platinum content of 99.99+ per cent, and had the following mechanical properties in the completely softened condition: Vickers hardness number, 39.4; ultimate tensile strength, 19,340 lb. per sq. in.; proportioilal limit, very low; elongation, 37.5 per cent in 2 inclles. 2. The effect of cold-rolling on the hardness is shown in Fig. 1. The hardness increases rapidly up to 10 to 15 per cent reduction and more slowly up to about 75 per cent reduction, beyond which it increases more rapidly. 3. The recrystallization temperatures for a 15-min. anneal, after cold-rolling 19, 39.5, 50.8, 66, 80.5 and 89.5 per cent reduction in thickness, are approximately 765°, 700°, 635°, 600°, 545' and 425°C., respectively. 4. The recrystallized grain size of this platinum is a function of the percentage of cold reduction, being larger the lower the percentage of cold-work. 5. Little or 110 grain grourtll resulted from subjecting recrystallized samples to higher temperatures or annealing for longer times. Prior Work As already mentioned, data on the recrystallization of platinum are scarce. UNTIL recently little attention has been paid to the effect of particle size on flotation. This has been especially true of material finer than 200 mesh.1 Particles of different sizes must behave differently in a flotation circuit; increased information along this line would be of practical use as well as of theoretical interest. The object of this study has been to determine what effect particle size has on floatability. The problem has been approached in two ways. One method consisted in a study of samples of the final products of several mills. These samples were sized and each size-product was analyzed for its important constituents. Bakelite briquettes2 of some of the products were made and studied under the microscope. This investigation is being continued, with particular reference to quantitative microscopic analysis of intermediate products of flotation plants. M In the other method of study, mixtures of pure minerals were ground to different degrees of fineness and floated. The products were then sized and analyzed. A study of the behavior of mixtures of pure sized minerals would have been illuminating, but after trial it was considered impractical on account of the tediousness of the large amount of elutriation required and the fact that the mineral particles would oxidize while being sized, preparatory to flotation. Broadly speaking, the following conclusions have been reached: 1. Results obtained by the two methods of study are in agreement. 2. The usual notion about the relative ease of flotation of very fine particles does not agree with the facts: 3. There is a time sequence of flotation with regard to particle size, the medium coarse particles floating first. 4. No successful method of floating extremely fine pulps has been found. 5. Recovery is optimum in a certain well-defined size range. 6. Selection is optimum in another well-defined size range.

The rapid development of transportation routes on the African continent in recent years has greatly stimulated the demand for motor fuels and this in turn has led to more extensive exploration of such limited portions of the continent as seem to give promise of commercial oil production. In 1930, however, only two countries were classed as producers of petroleum and only one, Egypt, attained any importance. Egypt The petroleum production of Egypt is derived from the Gemsah and Hurghada fields on the west coast of the Red Sea and the Abu Durba, on its eastern shore in the Sinai peninsula. The Gemsah field, which began to produce commercially in 1912, has now practically ceased production, owing to the invasion of salt water. The Hurghada field has been producing since October, 1914. It now has about 60 producing wells. During 1929, a deeper sand with flowing produition was discovered in the eastern part of the field, producing oil of lighter gravity and free from water. The Abu Durba field was discovered by the exploration work of the Egyptian Government in 1918, oil having been found at a depth of 172 ft. This field has now 15 producing wells but a very small production.
