ESTIMATION of re- serves in prorated sand fields has been discussed by S. A. Judson, H. D. Easton, Jr., and W. A. Schaeffer, Jr., in a paper that appears in Vol. 114 (1935), of the A.I.M.E. TRANSACTIONS. The purpose of this present paper is to extend the investigation to prorated flush limestone fields and to outline a method of procedure in determining the amount of oil originally in place and the amount of oil that can be recovered from such fields. Although it is possible to use the decline curves to estimate the amount of recoverable oil in certain limestone fields that are allowed to produce the oil at or near capacity production, such a method cannot be used in fields under severely restricted production rates. The problem is exceedingly complex due to fluctuation in the allowable rates of oil production over a wide range and at frequent intervals, and especially because of the heterogeneous nature of the reservoir itself. A well completed in a large solution cavity, capable of producing great quantities of oil per day, may be offset by a well of very limited capacity. Also, it is di5cult to arrive at an average figure for porosity in a given limestone reservoir due to abrupt variations in the character of limestone, in many instances even between two ad- joining wells. It is a safe statement that uniformity of porosity and permeability in limestone reservoirs .is nonexistent. It is evident, therefore, that the method of estimation of re- serves on the basis of per-acre content can give only approximate results.

In a previous paper1 in which one of the authors collaborated, it was postulated that All dissolved reagents which, in flotation pulps, either by action on the to-be-floated or on the not-to-be-floated particles affect their floatability, junction by reason of chemical reactions of well recognized types between the reagent and the particle affected. This generalization, apparently, like many pioneer structures, had for certain observers a flimsy appearance, and these, judging its stability rather by the number than by the character of its foundation posts, have attempted variously to overthrow it, either by the frontal attack of general denial, or by the flanking movement involved in assuming that those cases in which the facts were unknown or unproved were, therefore, discordant. But as time has passed and further evidence on the question has accumulated, it has become apparent that the results of verifiable experiments add stone by stone to the substructure of the hypothesis, and that the super-tructure has lost nothing in weathering. The present paper constitutes an examination of the opposing positions in the light of the more recent evidence developed. It will clarify the discussion if, at this point, we state more fully the implications of the disputed hypothesis. In the first place, it is explicitly limited to reagents that are dissolved in the water of the flotation pulp. Next, it refers only to such of these dissolved reagents as act on the solid particles in the pulp to affect their floatability. This includes the collectors, activators, and certain depressors and gangue-control reagrnts, but not the pure frothers, and not, necessarily, conditioners whose function seems to be merely that of pH control, although in certain cases it has been demonstrated that such control has the effect of regulating the primary reaction of the collector, depressor, or the like. Finally, there is no limitation as to the nature of the chemical reaction postulated.

ACTIVE participation by the United States in the war acted as a stimulant on the Annual Institute Meeting in New York rather than a retardant as feared. Attendance was about 10 per cent under the all-time high reached last year, but considering the number of men who could not possibly come because of active military service and the additional number who are devoting their whole time and effort to turning out vital war materials, the registration was really greater than might have been expected. But all in all the Institute put on a show that taxed the capacity of the Engineering Societies Building as well as the capacity of the visitors to find time to attend everything that promised to be of interest.

The great majority of stokers used in residential heating installations are of the clinkering type. Because of inherent characteristics of the underfeed combustion process as it occurs in these small stokers, and because of the wide range of operating conditions encountered in residential heating schedules, not all bituminous coals can be used successfully in residential underfeed units. The problem of providing consumer satisfaction has been attacked by the joint efforts of the stoker manufacturers and the coal industry; the stoker manufacturers have been concerned with improving their product to permit the use of a wider range of coals, and coal operators have made every effort to market selected and better prepared coals. In view of the wide range of physical characteristics and chemical properties of bituminous coals, the problems are real and are receiving increased attention. Some twelve years ago a laboratory method was developed at Battelle Memorial Institute for the relative evaluation of coals for use in residential underfeed stokers. The method was developed in conjunction with work being done at that time for Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., and for individual coal producers, to obtain information on the characteristics of coal that determined the successful performance of the small stoker. Details of the equipment and test procedure were given by R. A. Sherman1 in a paper presented at the University of Illinois Fifth Short Course in Coal Utilization. During the past several years, the evaluation of over forty different coals has been determined by investigations sponsored at Battelle by coal operators in the eastern producing districts. The purpose of this paper is to compare the results and conclusions derived from the various tests with marketing experiences of the operators, and to discuss briefly the relationship of test results to standard laboratory determinations. Equipment Used in Tests Fig 1 shows schematically the equipment used in the evaluation tests. The stoker is a commercial model of conventional design, having a nominal feed rate of 30 Ib per hr. A special laboratory furnace is used, which is tightly sealed to prevent the entrance of secondary air. The complete stoker-furnace assembly is mounted on platform scales which permits the measurement of combustible weight losses occurring during the test. The furnace stack, in which are a thermocouple, flue-gas sampling tube, and smoke meter, is connected to the laboratory exhaust breeching through a friction-less connection. Through use of an auxiliary blower system, provision is made for the measurement of the air delivered by the stoker fan to the windbox. A water seal in the duct work eliminates inter-

THIS paper discusses what mining reports should contain when presented to the California State Corporation Department, to accompany applications for the sale of stock to the general public, but the principles involved apply to mine financing everywhere. Such reports should 'be as clear and concise as possible, endeavoring to tell the truth in as few words as necessary. Should the engineer be aware that his report is to be used in connection with the sale of stock to the general public, he should consider the public as his client as well as the person who actually employs him. It is always required that the engineer be favorably known and of recognized standing. The following points should be given careful attention : 1. A legal description and location of the property. 2. Transportation conditions, and how they may be expected to affect the operating costs. 3. A brief history of the property, its production record as to tonnage, grade, and character of the ore should be given. Should the property have suspended operations for any reason, this should be given. Any details of former operating costs should be given, especially as to how any improvement could be made, due to better methods which might be employed.' 4. The main geological features and whether they are such as to lead the engineer to believe that the mine may possibly 'be exhausted or the ore of such grade as to be no longer profitable. If he considers them favorable, he should give his reasons for the belief that further development work may produce profitable results. A map showing these features should be submitted, and it is not necessary that such map be highly colored or contain any more than the essential matters. 5. MANY different methods are used for transporting coal from the working face to the tipple. The common methods are animal haulage, locomotive haulage, conveyor systems, and combinations of these three, supplemented, at times, by the miner pushing his own car. Haulage may also be classified into gathering and main line. Gathering haulage is the collecting of loaded cars to a point whence they are hauled to the tipple. In this there is perhaps more lost-time than on the main line because there are .more units in the operation to be synchronized. Also, conditions on the gathering haul- age, such as bad track, poor timbering, insufficient motive power, etc., cause delays; usually these are corrected on the main-line haulage.

Bolivia does not yet have any production which is being marketed. It does have a potential production, however, from wells which have been completed by the Standard Oil Co. of Bolivia, a subsidiary of the Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey. No other company is active in drilling and development work to date. The total potential production from wells now completed is about 6000 bbl, daily. Wells Completed Completions during 1928 and their initial daily productions. if any, were as follows: Camatindi No. 1, 350 to 1000 bbl.: Camiri No. 1, 500 bbl.; Sanandita No. 3, 100 bbl.; Tatarenda No. 1, dry hole, and Bermejo No. 2, deepened 50 ft. made 1000 barrels. The most striking development of the year was the Camiri No. 1 well which, after just entering the sand, made 500 bbl. per day of 52" B. oil. This well is the northernmost good producer which the Standard has brought in to date. Oil from this well is used without refining in the tractors and trucks of the company. A small topping plant has been installed from which high-grade gasoline is obtained for use in motor cars and some is being produced for the use of air plants stationed at Villa Montes. The results for Sanandita No. 13 were somewhat disappointing since Sanandita No. 2 was rated at about 3000 bbl. Tatarenda NO. 1, located on a large unbroken structure, was drilled to 4000 ft. and abandoned as a dry hole. Bermejo No. 2 was deepened 50 ft. to 2085 ft.. and on a 10-day test averaged 1000 bbl. per day. This well is on the border between Bolivia and the Argentine. Wells Drilling The wells drilling are Camiri No. 2, Sanandita No. 5, Machareti No. I and Bermejo No. 5. This is the smallest number of drilling wells which the Standard has had for several years but is principally due to

Flotation may be defined as a process whereby mineral particles are concentrated by selective adhesion to air-liquid interfaces. The process involves attachment of desired mineral particles to air bubbles, and removal of the mineralized air bubbles from the surface of the pulp as a mineral concentrate. Problem Although great strides have been made in understanding the principles of flotation, one part of the process which has not been adequately explained is the mechanism by which selected mineral particles become attached to air bubbles. A glance at the froth of an operating flotation cell demonstrates adequately that use of proper reagents and conditions mill result in such attachments; but how such attachment takes place is not definitely known. A better knowledge of this factor might lead to improved flotation practice either through altered machine design or the application of scientific innovations. Direct observation of the behavior of mineral particles and bubbles in an operating cell does not appear promising because of the complexity of the system. For this reason, conclusions concerning the problem must be deduced from theoretical considerations or from observation of simplified systems designed to reproduce conditions thought to exist in an operating cell. Present Theories Two mechanisms have been recognized as fundamental in particle-bubble attachment: gas precipitation and direct encounter. It is a simple matter to demonstrate in the laboratory that attachment can be brought about by either mechanism. As to the relative importance of the two in a particular flotation system, however, there is a divergence of views. Taggart1 states, Under exceptional circumstances sufficient force and time to effect attachment may conjoin in an ore pulp undergoing agitation, and a preformed bubble adhere to a collector-coated mineral particle, but the occurrence is rare. . . . Pulp-body froth flotation effects selection in the body of a conditioned pulp by causing gas bubbles to precipitate from solution in the liquid phase preferentially at the surfaces of collector-coated particles, and to cling to these particles, Gaudin2 states that, within the pulp body of an agitation machine, attachment of mineral particles to air bubbles occurs as a consequence of contact between the two. This theory has been supported by theoretical reasoning and much circumstantial evidence. AUSTRALIANS and New Zealanders, whose countries have respectively yielded gold to the value of £666,000,000 and £96,000,000, are taking full advantage of the current high prices for that metal. There is a marked activity in ordinary prospecting, geophysical exploration, further development of working mines and reopening of old properties, formation of new companies, installation of new equipment and processes, and expansion of operations generally. Australian gold production last year was approximately double the quantity of 1929 and its value three times as great, 1929 being the low of recent years. The 1933 production was about 821,000 oz. From New Zealand, 165,000 oz. was exported last year. Papua and New Guinea contributed slightly over 100,000 oz. What the future price of gold will be nobody knows, but, even if it returns to the former level, Australian producers are almost sure of 110 shillings an ounce until 1940 through the Commonwealth Government's Gold Bounty Act, at present temporarily and necessarily suspended from operation.

Included in the general category of clays is a large and varied assemblage of nonmetallic silicate minerals which characteristically occur as fine-grained particles having flaky, sheetlike, or rod-shaped form. Most, though not all, are hydrous aluminum silicates. Amount and kind of impurities vary greatly, and these strongly influence the uses of the various clay types. Clays occur in a wide range of geological situations: as bedded sedimentary deposits composed of the weathering products of feldspar and other minerals; as alteration products of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks weathered or hydrothermally altered in place; and, to a more limited extent, as hydrothermally introduced materials. TYPES AND MARKETS On the basis of chemical composition and crystal structure, two major groups of clay minerals recognized are the "kandites" or kaolin group, and the "smectites" or montmorillonite group. Another major type is illite, particularly important as a constituent of shales. Two additional mineral species having economic importance are attapulgite (palygorskite) and sepiolite. For present purposes, however, a classification based on utilization is more appropriate. The U.S. Bureau of Mines recognizes six types of clay: kaolin, ball clay, fire clay, bentonite, fuller's earth, and miscellaneous clay. Kaolin The kaolin group of minerals consists of the mineral species kaolinite, halloysite (metahalloysite), dickite, and nacrite, although the latter two are not being produced commercially. Kaolin, also called china clay, is a high-purity white material. Perhaps it is best known as a principal ingredient in the manufacture of chinaware, porcelain, and other high-quality ceramic products. However, by the mid-1970s very close to 50% of the kaolin produced in the United States was going to the paper industry for use as a filler and coating material. Manufacture of refractories uses about 12% of U.S. production. Kaolin is also used in plastics, in the rubber industry as a filler in footwear, electrical cable, and similar products, and as a conditioner of rubber for automobile tires to add strength and abrasion resistance. Smaller amounts are used in printing ink, paint, and adhesives; as insecticide carriers; in the production of catalysts for the petroleum refining industry; and in many other industrial and commercial applications. Production and use of kaolin in the United States doubled in the ten years from 1946 to 1956, and doubled again by 1966. Growth continues at a rate of about 7 % per annum.

A theoretical investigation has been made of the forward combustion process using a one-dimensional linear mathematical model, taking into consideration the effect of the vaporization-condensation which occurs on the leading edge of the heat wave. This work involves the solution of five coupled partial differential equations. Besides the vaporization-condensation phenomenon, these equations account for conduction, convection, combustion, heat loss, diffusion and bulk fluid flow. For the one-dimensional linear model studied, the vaporization-condensation phenomenon does not induce appreciable change in the temperature at the combustion front; and its primary effect is to create a steam plateau and to increase the length of the heated zone ahead of the combustion front. This effect becomes more pronounced at lower pressures, higher porosities or reduced gas saturations. The peak temperature and the temperature profile on the leading edge of the heat wave stabilize after a certain period. The length of the steam bank remains practically constant, although the length of the water bank increases as the heat wave advances. INTRODUCTION The existence of the vaporization-condensation phenomenon in the heat-wave process and the important role played by the phenomenon have been recognized by several investigators. Kuhn and Kochl stated that steam plateaus were frequently observed on the temperature records of their experiments. The steam plateaus were attributed primarily to the vaporization and subsequent condensation of the interstitial water existing in the oil sand. Szasz2 suggested that both lighter hydrocarbons and water are vaporized on the leading edge of the heat wave, carried forward in the gas stream, and then condensed to create banks of oil and water. Martin et al suggested that the vaporization-condensation phenomenon is one of the main mechanisms of the heat-wave process, along with thermal expansion and viscosity reduction. Wilson et al. reported the existence of a steam plateau several inches in length in their small-scale tube-run experiments. However, this important phenomenon has never been taken into consideration in the numerous theoretical analyses by various authors. 5 The purpose of this work was to study the thermal aspects of a linear heat wave, taking into consideration the vaporization-condensation on the leading edge of the wave, to determine the effect of this phenomenon on the temperature profile of the reservoir, and to investigate how this effect varies when other process variables are changed. THEORY We consider a reservoir of porous medium of cross-sectional area A, extending from x = 0 to x = L. This reservoir contains, aside from the solid matrix itself, a gas phase and a "combined liquid phase" which is a combination of two immiscible liquid phases — namely, an oil phase and a water phase. The oil present in the reservoir is assumed to consist of three fractions, a noncondensable gas, a nondistillable residuum, and a vaporizable oil fraction which may be present in both the gas phase and liquid phase. Before the heat-wave process begins, preheating has taken place and has imparted an initial temperature distribution T,(x) to the reservoir. At the start of the process, a stream of oxygen-bearing gas is introduced through the face at x = 0. This gas supports the combustion of the residual fuel and supplies the heat throughout the process. In order to develop a tractable system of equations, the model properties are postulated as follows: (1) the system is isotropic and homogeneous; (2) there is a uniform fuel content throughout the reservoir; (3) combustion takes place in a moving vertical planar region of infinitesimal thickness; (4) the temperatures of the fluids and the solid matrix are identical; (5) radiation is negligible; (6) the gas and liquid saturations are uniform throughout the reservoir and remain unchanged

THE ball mill has superseded stamps for the reduction of gold ores in most of the recently designed plants, partly because stamps are not suited to die fine grinding required for flotation, and partly to save space and construction cost. Experience with these new mills seems to confirm the idea that it is more difficult to recover bold from a ball-mill product than it is when stamps are used for crushing. Microscopical examination of particles of gold that have passed through a ball mill show that the gold has been pounded into exceedingly thin flakes coated with a talcy surface, making it more difficult to save by amalgamation, flotation, or concentrating. Bearing in mind that gold is extremely malleable, it seems reasonable that this should be so. Contrast the action in a stamp battery, where the crushing is by impact in the presence of mercury, to the grinding and rolling under pressure in a ball mill. It is well known that a better recovery can be obtained by panning or amalgamation from a sample of ore that has been crushed by mortar and pestle than from one reduced on a bucking board.

Mining in the Tri-State district of Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma has been nearly continuous from about 1848 until the present day, although the major activity was from about 1880 to 1955. The district, which has produced over $2 billion in zinc and lead concentrates, ranks as one of the greatest mining districts in the world. Unlike other Mississippi Valleytype deposits in the United States, which occur in Cambrian and Ordovician limestones and dolomites, the Tri-State district ores occur in Mississippian limestones containing abundant chert. Zinc is 5 to 6 times more abundant than lead. In the Picher Field, the principal sub-district which has accounted for 61 percent of the total district production, most of the ore has been mined from the single horizon, M bed. Most ore bodies, other than those of the "Sheet Ground" or blanket-type, are in large, essentially flat-lying breccia zones and have a definite mineral zonal pattern. An irregular, generally elongated central dolomitic core is surrounded progressively outward by the main ore run, the jasperoid zone, the muddy or shaly and bouldery zone, the sparry calcite limestone zone, and the fossiliferous, dominantly crinoidal, limestone zone. Some of the zones may be absent or nearly so and may overlap to some extent with an adjacent zone. Although the district has been studied by many authors, much controversy still exists about such items as genesis, paragenesis, and time of emplacement. These subjects are discussed in the paper.

THE first session was held in the small hall of the Academy of Music, on Tuesday evening, February 18th, 1879. The proceedings were opened by the reading, by President Eckley B. Coxe, of the following Address : SECONDARY TECHNICAL EDUCATION. Technical education is a subject to which both the American Institute of Mining Engineers and the American Society of Civil Engineers have of late years given much attention, and deservedly so. We all remember the admirable address of our former President, Mr. Holley, at the Washington meeting, upon this subject, and the very interesting reunion of the two societies in Philadelphia for its discussion. The problem to the solution of which the meeting devoted its attention was, "Shall the practical education of the engineer in the mine, in the rolling-mill, in the workshop, or in the field, precede, be contemporaneous with, or follow his theoretical studies in the technical school ?" I do not propose to add anything to what was so admirably said by so many of our leading engineers on that occasion ; but I shall ask your attention to another question in technical education, which seems to me equally worthy of our consideration, and which, I am sorry to say, has as yet attracted but little attention in this country. It is, "Shall the apprentices (I call them so for the want of a better general name), who are growing up and learning their trades in and around our mines and works, and from whose ranks the master mechanics and foremen of the future must be taken-shall they be provided with some means of obtaining as much theoretical training as may be necessary to enable them properly to understand the various processes and operations that they may be called upon to superintend, and not be obliged to pick up, as best they may, here a little and there a little truth mingled with much error?" In the former case, those who have the ability and industry to avail themselves of the advantages that should be offered to them would fit themselves to become real foremen, men who would understand and appreciate the true engineer and his methods. Of late years the young men of this country who have wished to enter our profession have had great facilities offered to them for so doing ; there have been undoubtedly great improvements in the methods of instruction; and although I am very far from imagining that no further progress can be made, or is demanded, yet I feel sure that

The campaign now being waged to improve the quality of the rock-drill bit is the natural outcome of the scientific development of the drilling machine during the past twenty years. In this development there has been a great increase of power output per unit of weight of machine. But the development of the rock drilling engine has been seriously hampered by the need of a drill bit that would withstand, without undue wear or breakage, the heavy rapid blows of the improved pneumatic hammer. This problem was difficult to solve because an increase in the weight or section of the drill-steel bar resulted in decreased cutting speed and higher operating costs of both the bit and its actuating engine. The solution, therefore, is to make the bit of steel that, for a given weight or section, will be more shock and wear resisting. In the attempt to meet these requirements, many of the drill-steel manufacturers alloyed the steel with vanadium, chromium, nickel, etc. on the assumption that such elements would improve the rock-drill bit but due to the sensitiveness of such steel to forging and heat treatment, higher cost, and lack of continuity of effort on the part of the steel manufacturer to perfect this product, but little progress has been made in the adoption of these steels and the so-called straight carbon steel is today recognized as the standard material for all rock-drill bits. The first step in improving drill-bit efficiency is the determination of the cause of breakage and wear. For this reason, in 1917, certain rock-drill manufacturers, in conjunction with some of the larger mining interests, conducted exhaustive tests in both the field and the laboratory. It was then found that, in the main, the cause of drill-steel troubles is not attributable to the duty imposed upon it by the normal operation of the drilling engine, but to improper forging and heat treating of the bit and to the subjecting of the bit to improper use. The fact that it is possible to minimize the troubles attributable to improper heat treatment of the drill steel has been demonstrated and it is recommended that such knowledge be made available by teaching those interested in the production, use, and up-keep of drill bits the principles on which success in this direction may be achieved. In order to consider the amalgamation process intelligently, it was first necessary to learn the nature of an amalgam. In the performance of this task it was found necessary to consult a large volume of literature and to perform experimental investigations. The conceptions of the nature of amalgams thus obtained have so important a bearing on the amalgamation-process as a whole, as well as upon the possible influences of temperature, that it was advisable to include them in the treatment of the subject. The broader title is therefore used, even though some features of the amalgamation process have been treated very briefly and others entirely omitted, there being nothing new to present regarding them and their development not required for a clear presentation of the matter in hand. I. HISTORICAL INTRODUCTION. Gold was one of the earliest metals known to man. Occurring in the metallic state, it could be picked up in nuggets or washed, as gold dust, front the sand and gravel of streams. Interesting descriptions of the processes employed in early times for the recovery of gold may be found in Pliny's Natural History and in the treatise by Agricola on ores and minerals. But little progress in the treatment of the ores of gold was possible until efficient -crushing machines were devised. This want was supplied by the introduction, about the beginning of the sixteenth century, of the stamp mill to treat the ores of Saxony. Blanket strikes, or similar devices, were used to catch the

THE initial meeting on Mining Methods* opened at 10 o'clock Monday morning with Scott Turner as chairman and W. Spencer Hutchinson as vice- chairman; about 60 attending. After preliminary announcements Theodore Marvin was called on for his paper,, entitled "Rock Tunnel Methods," which has been appearing serially in The Explosives Engineer. Marvin read the introduction and called attention to the account of one or' two particularly' interesting projects, such as the. Brooklyn water supply tunnel. E. D. 'Gardner, Char1e.s S. Hurter, L. D. Lamont and Spencer P. Howell took part in the discussion, Howell commenting on the fact that, in one case cited, misfires had occurred through detonator wires 'coming in contact with the case of an unapproved flashlight, .,: and that all flashlights should be approved.

Maurice Rey—The influence of cyclone diameter upon the fineness of separation is an important point which, however, cannot be discussed adequately if the injection pressure or the rate of flow are not specified. Perhaps some light can be thrown on the matter by using the formulas derived by Dahlstrom. Let us consider several geometrically similar cyclones where the apertures e and b are equal and proportional to the diameter D and which are operated with the same pressure drop. Eq 8 of Dahlstrom's paper can be written: Q Q = K D'. " or. if F is constant: Q = K D18 K is a constant of proportionality. Introducing this value of Q in eq 13 gives elimination efficiency = K D ,41 Elimination efficiency, in the terminology of Dahl-strom, means the diameter of particles, in microns, which divide equally between the underflow and the overflow. This denomination is regrettable and it would be preferable to call it diameter of separation or characteristic size or any other name connoting a size rather than an efficiency. Whatever the name used, the above equation shows a slow increase in the fineness of separation when the diameter of the cyclone decreases. For example, if a 14-in. cyclone gives a 400-mesh separation (37 microns), geometrically similar cyclones, having the same pressure drop will give separations at the sizes shown below.
