OF the various methods of sampling gas-condensate wells, a method that secures a continuous representative sample of the well stream is desirable. Such a method, consisting of a sampling tube introduced into the well tubing, has proved satisfactory. The method is sufficiently accurate for operating and engineering problems. A portable testing apparatus can be used with the sampling tube to obtain data useful in studying the economic and technical aspects of the development and operation of gas-condensate properties. INTRODUCTION The recent discovery and development of gas reserves that contain hydrocarbons that condense with reduction of temperature or pressure, or both, to form a product known as condensate, has brought many new problems to the oil and gas industries. With further discovery of deep, high-pressure fields it is presumable that many more gas fields of this type will be added to the steadily increasing number. Such gas reserves are found either associated with oil as a gas cap or in separate formations. There seems to be no positive correlation between the physical or geological nature of the reservoir, and the chemical composition or phase characteristics of its contents. Knowledge of the chemical make-up and phase behavior of gas-condensate reserves are needed to cope with many problems. A knowledge of the chemical composition and phase characteristics of the reservoir material is necessary to properly design a gasoline or recycling plant, to estimate natural gas and condensate reserves, to enable the operator to study the economic and technical aspects of various methods of operation and development, and to carry out the plan of operating subsurface and surface lease equipment. This information is often useful in questions of mineral ownership, proration, legal position, and taxation. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss methods used by the writers to determine the chemical composition and phase characteristics of the fluids produced from a condensate well. The scope of the paper includes a discussion and description of the method of sampling, the results of tests on the accuracy of the sampling method, a description of a portable testing apparatus used to examine the phase characteristics, typical results of tests on wells from several condensate fields, and some of the applications of these data to production problems. References to previous work on this subject are cited at the end of the paper. THE PROBLEM At reservoir conditions of temperature and pressure, the fluids produced from a condensate well exist in a homogeneous vaporous condition. The consequent reduction of temperature and pressure that occurs as this gas enters and flows up the well tube results in condensation of some of the hydrocarbon material to form a liquid. Known CsCl-type phases in transition metal alloys are shown to be formed preferentially at an electron concentration of approximately 6; a tetragonally distorted version of the CsCl structure is stable at -e/a = 6.5. The relationship of the distortion to electron concentration is verified by experimental data for the quasibinary systems Time ,Os) , Ti(Re,Ir), and Ti(Re,Pt) and the ternary system Ti-Ru-Rh. It was noted some years ago1j2 that the occurrence of CsC1-type ordered structures in equiatomic binary alloys, AB, of transition metals correlates with the location of the component elements in the periodic table. One of the components, A, must be to the left and the other component. B, must be to the right of the chromium group. It was pointed out2 that the CsCl structure does not occur in CrFe. is metastable in VFe,3 and is stable in TiFe up to high temperatures, and that this progressively increasing stability may correspond to an increase in electron transfer between the two components and to a correlated decrease of the magnetic moment associated with the iron atoms. Such a decrease was in fact later demonstrated by Nevitt. 4 The binary CsC1-type phases that are formed by a transition metal with either another transition metal or a lanthanide are listed in Table I. Thirty-three of these phases occur at an average electron concentration (average number of electrons outside of closed shells) of e/a = 6. The five phases that are formed at an electron concentration of e/a = 5.5 appear to be borderline cases. This is suggested for instance by the fact that TiRe is bcc. without any long-range order, while TiTc (at the same electron concentration) has a CsCl ordered structure. Six of the undistorted CsCl phases formed by transition metals with one another have an average electron concentration of e/a = 6. 5. Table I. With the exception of Zr4,Rhs4 and Hf48Rh52. the B component in these phases is a first long-period transition metal, i.e.. iron or cobalt. TiNi. with an electron concentration of e/n = 7, appears to undergo transformation at around room temperature to a more complex ordered struct~re.~ The five other CsCl structures known to occur at e/a = 6.5 have either scandium or a lanthanide metal as the A component; the difference in the elec-tronegativity and in the e/a ratio between the component elements is in these phases very large, A(e/a) - 7, and they may be expected to have a rather strong ionic bond component. Presumably the ionic bond stabilizes the CsCl-type structure at the equiatomic composition and it overrides the electron concentration requirement. When the B element is not from the first long period and the A component is not a rare earth metal. equiatomic (AB) alloys of transition metals with an average electron concentration of e/a = 6.5 in most cases have a crystal structure closely related to the CsC1-type, but slightly distorted tetragonally, Table I. This was first found6 for VRu, NbRu. and TaRu. It was noted6 that the undistorted CsCl structure is also stable in the three systems. but at a lower electron concentration, near e/a = 6. In these systems this requires a deviation from equiatomic stoichiometry. which is otherwise ideally suited for the CsC1-type structure. A similar situation was later found in the Ti-Rh7 and the Ti-Ir systems. 8 The Ti-Rh alloys undergo a second distortion and become orthorhombic when the rhodium content becomes somewhat larger than 50 pct. Slag and matte, in lead and copper smelting, are, for convenience of removal, tapped into pots of small capacity, usually of paraboloid form, of cast-iron, weighing 275 to 300 pounds, and holding the same weight of slag. As in many smelting districts one ton of ore makes a ton and a quarter of slag, a large number of pots is needed to equip an ordinary plant. Sudden and frequent expansion of the solid bowl causes the pots to crack at the bottom in a few months, and the matte, a very fluid sulpliide, enters these rough fissures and speedily corrodes its way through the vessel. 1 find, from one year of practice with a slag-

A FEW years ago a novel electric detonator known as the split-second or millisecond delay electric blasting cap was introduced for use in quarry blasting. Regular electric blasting caps fired in series may be depended upon to fire within a millisecond or so from the first to the last in a series. Regular delay electric blasting caps are provided that fire one period after the other period in intervals of 1/2 to possibly 1 l/2 sec. Most split-second or millisecond delays are designed to fire one period after the other period in possibly 25 to 50 millisecond intervals. The ear is not capable of detecting time intervals of this magnitude.

(written discussion?).¬A study of this paper raises a question on which it is hoped Mr. Stork will throw more light; that is, why does an oxygen content generated on poor melting conditions have a deleterious effect on the properties of the iron, while an oxygen content generated by the oxidation of steel scrap in the cupola is beneficial to the strength and chilling ability? In each case the oxygen is absorbed at the same time and place in the process of melting and it is by no means clear why the superiority of semisteel should be assigned solely to its oxygen absorption, when oxygen absorbed without the steel addition is admitted to be injurious. It is not apparent why oxygen caused to be absorbed by the steel addition should not pro-duce the effects of burning, sluggishness, slag inclusions, gas occlusions, etc., the same as oxygen absorbed by the iron in the cupola for any other reason, and it would seen that other factors to which he has not given sufficient emphasis must enter into the author's results. To an impartial reader of this paper, who was most favorably inclined toward J. E. Johnson, Jr.'s theory of the improvement of cast iron by oxygen, the discrepancy in the author's reasoning or statements is difficult to accept, and it is hoped that an explanation will appear in the final discussion.

Experiments in which calcium chloride displaced sodium chloride from four cores showed the extent of asymmetry in the resulting effluent concentration profiles. These results provided a check on how validly the mixing process is modeled by a differential (i.e., not finite-stage) capacitance mathematical model. The effluent concentration profile from two consolidated cores exhibited considerable asymmetry, while two unconsolidated cores yielded nearly symmetrical profiles. All runs resulted in breakthrough of the 50 per cent concentration significantly before one pore volume was injected. In addition, velocity appreciably affected the effluent concentration profile from a Torpedo sandstone core. The differential capacitance model matched the data significantly better than a simple diffusion model. The capacitance model allows determination of the amount of dead-end pore space in a porous matrix and the effect of velocity on the rate of diffusion into this space. An experimental program yielding insight into the physical validity of the capacitance effect is described. INTRODUCTION Axial dispersion — the mixing accompanying the flow of miscible fluids through porous media — has been the subject of many relativeiy recent studiesl-13 and a comprehensive review of the topic has been given by Perkins and Johnston.14 This dispersion is of practical interest in studies of the miscible displacement process, fixed-bed chemical reactors, and the adsorption of solutes from a flowing stream onto the surface of a porous medium. In the latter case, the effect of dispersion must be considered when adsorption parameters are determined from the nature of concentration profiles. In general, early studies of dispersion assumed applicability of a simple diffusion equation and were concerned with correlation of the experimentallv determined "effective" diffusion coefficient with system properties over a large range of the latter. Recent have been concerned with the deviations between the asymmetrical effluent concentration profiles observed and the symmetrical ones predicted by the diffusion model. In the present study, effluent concentration profiles were obtained from consolidated and unconsolidated cores. These profiles were compared with those predicted by a differential (i.e., not finite-stage) capacitance model. Solutions to the simple diffusion model, for three sets of boundary conditions, were compared with one another and with the experimental profiles. SUMMARY OF PREVIOUS WORK The reader is referred to Perkins and johnston14 for an extensive review of studies of dispersion in porous media. Many investigators have employed the simple diffusion model characterized by Eq. 1 below: The dispersion coefficient D for unconsolidated systems is correlated by u is interstitial velocity and dp is particle diameter. Essentially all of the barite produced in Georgia has come from the Carters-ville district in the northwest part of the state. The earliest recorded shipment of ore, 60 tons, was made in 1894.' With the exception of the four-year period 1931 to 1934, the separate yearly output has been recorded and published since 1915, whereas the total yearly output of the United States has been published since 1880. The separately recorded production of Georgia (Cartersville) through 1947 is 2,232,544 short tons valued at $14,900,746,2 but unpublished data on the period 1931 to 1934, plus the estimated unrecorded output prior to 1915, make the actual total about 2,400,000 short tons. This is about 21 pct of the total production of the United States, which, through 1947, is 11,328,440 short tons valued at $71,683,386.2 The barite-producing part of the Cartersville district is relatively small, having from north to south a length of 4.5 miles, and a width of 2 miles. This small area, containing 35 barite mines, is the source of practically all of the barite produced in the state. The area is hilly, and has a total relief of 500 ft. The west-flowing Etowah River crosses the middle of the area, and is an unfailing source of water for operations on properties near its course. Opencut mining is carried on during the entire year, but is hampered by rain in the winter and early spring. Three railroads, two U.S. highways, and a network of graded roads provide access to and within the district, as well as excellent shipping facilities for ore and supplies. In addition to the barite, the district contains deposits of manganese, brown iron, ocher, umber, and specular hematite. Geologic Setting The area containing the barite deposits is underlain by Lower Cambrian rocks and their weathered residua. These rocks are grouped in three formations; in ascending order, these are the Weisner, the Shady, and the Rome. The Weisner formation consists mainly of finely micaceous metashale containing many random beds of quartzite, a few beds of conglomerate and metasiltstone, and beds of crystalline limestone that is apparently scarce. The formation is more than 1000 ft thick, and the base is not exposed. On account of their resistance to weathering, the rocks of the Weisner formation have sustained the higher elevations and therefore crop out on the ridges that characterize the area. Nearly all of these ridges are underlain by asymmetric anticlinal folds, and conversely the intervening valleys are underlain by synclinal folds. A diagrammatic section, showing typical mode of exposure of the Weisner rocks and their relation to overlying formations, in the limb of a fold, is shown in Fig 1. The Shady formation here consists of a lithologically distinctive series of variably siliceous specular hematite beds and thin beds of dolomite, which in places contain abundant fossils. In the zone of weathering, the dolomite has been leached and most of the hematite hydrated to ocherous and umber-ous clays, hut bedding planes in these weathered materials are commonly well preserved with or without distortion effected by slumping. It is based mainly on data contained in unpublished Bureau of Mines reports. Acknowledgment is made to the Federal Geological Survey for its cooperative work with the Bureau of Mines, to the various State geological and mining departments, and other State and local agencies. CLAY EXPLORATION BY THE BUREAU OF MINES Much has been written and published on clays and clay deposits relating to their refractory, ceramic, and other qualities but such literature is lacking in analyses of the available alumina content of the clays and provides little indication of their possibilities as a source of alumina. With this new objective in view, a great many of the known clay deposits were reexamined and new ones discovered. The Bureau of Mines made preliminary examination of numerous areas in the western United States. Five of those most favorably indicated were systematically drilled, and in each a large amount of high-alumina clay has been found. These five major projects are Molalla and Hobart Butte, in western Oregon; Cowlitz-Castle Rock, in southwestern Washington; Lone, in California; and the Olson-Troy area in Idaho (Fig. I). Preliminary scout drilling was done in the Stockton deposit at Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; the Whiteware deposit near Lewistown, Mont.; and 13 areas in the Spokane or eastern Washington region, where the most favorably indicated area, known as the Excelsior, is now being drilled more systematically. Preliminary drilling was undertaken in numerous areas adjacent to the major deposits and others more remote. As a result, large additional clay possibilities were found. THE CLAY DEPOSITS The clay deposits under consideration are of the sedimentary or transported types, parts of which have been altered further by the agencies of weathering, ground water, or hydrothermal action. There are extensive deposits of residual clays in northern Idaho and in eastern Washington, but they have been found to be low in the available alumina and to contain much free quartz, mica, and unaltered feldspar. To be of value, they must first be subjected to beneficiation to remove these gangue minerals. The sedimentary clays have been derived largely from the decomposition, erosion, and transportation of granites, gneisses, schists, and basalts. At Molalla, some

ONE unique distinction can be claimed by the new Chairman of the Coal Division, C. E. Lawall: he is the only A.I.M.E. member also a university president, though several engineering colleges are headed by Institute members. Only last year he was promoted from director of the school of mines to president of West Virginia University, following a term as acting head of that institution of over 3000 students. He was born in Catasauqua, in eastern Pennsylvania, on Nov. 21, 1891, and went to Lehigh, receiving an E.M. in 1914, and an M.S. seven years later. The production of all Russian fields incressed from approsimatctly 74,000,000 bbl. during 1926-27, to approximately 83,000,000 bbl. during 1927-28. Of this amount Baku was responsible for 54,.500,000 bbl., Grozny for 25,800,000 bbl., and Emba for 1,200,000 bbl. Accordingly, the proportional importance of the Grozny oil field has been considerably increased, the present production being twice that of 1913. The most notable factor of production during 1927-28 was the importance of gushers; 40.8 per cent. of the total was thus obtained. In the Baku fields 26 per cent. of the total, and in Grozny 74.2 percent'. of the total were produced by naturally flowing wells. This may be explained by the reduction in authorizations for drilling by the central authorities, and, accordingly, the local trusts increased the production to the planned figures at the expense of the proved prolific reserves. In Baku region, the Surnkany oil field produced 36.1 per cent. of the total Baku production, or an equivalent of 53,800 bbl. per clay, the largest percentage coining from the fifth horizon. Nest year's plans call for continual development of that horizon as well as of the sixteenth horizon in the Bibi-Eibat field, which was opened lately. In the Grozny fields the New Area (Bellik) WAS responsible for 79.4 per cent. of the total production. The authorized plan for 1928-29 production calls for 92,200,000 bid., and a reasonably accurate estimate for 1932--33 production is placed at. 156,000,000 bbl., with Baku contributing 101,800,000 bbl., Grozny 44,100,000 bbl., Emba 6,200,000 bbl., Kuban 2,100,000 bbl., Saghalien Island 1,400,000 bbl., and Russian Turkestan 400,000 bbl. In connection with recent discoverices in the Baku area these figures art. quite conservative. The average production per well per day in the Baku oil fields was 49.2 bbl., in Grozny 175 bbl.; in detail, Surakany oil field averaged 250 bbl., and the New Area in Grozny 514 bbl. per day. New completions in all Baku fields averaged 264 bbl. per day, and in Grozny 970 bbl. pel. day. These figures show a considerable progress in the technical developnlent of all fields, compared even with the prerevolution figures, since all the mprovements are noted in the fields that arc over 30 years old.

Laboratory tests were made with pure minerals and actual reservoir rock samples to study the effects of hydrothermal (steam m hot water) treatments on reservoir rock properties. These tests showed that hydro-thermal treatment of many reservoir rocks can result in significant rock softening. The softening was attributed primarily to the partial destruction of dolomite and kaolinite and the synthesis of montmorillonite in the presence of excess silica. In many cases, the softening was great enough to cause considerable healing of propped fractures; therefore, a serious reduction in welt productivity could result. In other tests it was found that the addition of ammonia to a hydrothermal treating fluid in a concentration as low as 0.013 Ib/lb of water not only could prevent rock softening but could cause rock hardening. The results of X-ray diflraction analyses of rock samples showed that when ammonia was added to the treating fluid, ammonium-mica and analcite were formed instead of montmorillonite. No significant permeability damage was observed in the sandstones that were subjected to the ammonia-hydro-thermal environment; in some sandstones, permeabifity improvements resulted. INTRODUCTION As the use of steam or hot water becomes more prevalent in well stimulation methods. the need for information on the effects of such treatments on reservoir rock properties becomes increasingly apparent. Several works have been published on high-temperature changes in rock properties,',' but these are more applicable to in situ combustion operations than to steam or hot water injection processes. The mineralogical literature contains many publications which report on the changes occurring with various pure minerals in hydrothermal systems. A review of this literature denotes the ease with which entirely new, crystalline mineral phases can be synthesized from other minerals in hydrothermal environments at temperatures, pressures and residence times typical of those encountered in oilfield thermal recovery or stimulation processes. Discussions of many of these experiments are given by Deer et al. Grim,' Roy et al., Zen\ and Hawkins.' One of the most significant of these pure mineral studies is the hydrothermal synthesis work of Levinson and Vian" in which montmorillonite was synthesized from naturally occurring minerals; i.e., kaolinite, quartz and carbonate minerals (particularly dolomite). These reactions occurred at 575F in only 2 days and at 300F in 5 days. These results may be applicable to petroleum reservoir rocks since the minerals studied were those which are commonly found in sandstones. Furthermore, the environmental conditions imposed in the studies were very similar to those involved in thermal stimulation of petroleum reservoirs, e.g., steam or hot water injection. Other studies have suggested that weak rocks could be hardened by "electrochemical induration", a process in which an electric current is applied to a clay-containing rock body. These tests can be regarded as hydrothermal treatments since they were conducted in some instances with aqueous solutions and since clay temperatures during the electrical treatment reached a maximum of about 100C. Although a number of studies of the reaction of pure minerals have been reported, very little has been published on the reactions of petroleum rock-hydrothermal systems. No work has been reported on preventing the more detrimental rock changes in rock softening which might occur during the injection of steam or hot water into reservoirs. The studies described in this paper were conducted to provide such information. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH The laboratory tests included studies of the effect of hydrothermal treatment on core samples from several different reservoirs. The hydrothermal treatments (simulated steam treatments) were conducted with distilled water at 575F, for the most part, for periods of 2 to 6 days. This temperature level was selected because it represented that temperature which would probably prevail in several cases under consideration for steam injection projects. The core samples, as well as the pure mineral samples, were contained in high-pressure stainless steel, autoclave-type pressure vessels. The effects of the hydrothermal treatments were evaluated by measuring the penetrometer hardness, formation rock embedment strength and permeabilities of the core samples before and after the treatments (Fig. 1)'" In addition, the mineralogical changes in the specimens were studied by X-ray diffraction. Concomitant with the core sample studies, the mineralogical changes were studied in greater detail by conducting hydrothermal synthesis experiments with pure minerals at similar temperature levels and residence times. For the most part, samples of finely-crushed pure dolomite.

In the 100' years since AIME was founded in 1871, the Institute has issued a great many publications in a variety of forms: periodicals, Transactions volumes, and special volumes or books. The following is a brief history of AIME publishing with some suggestions for proper referencing. TRANSACTIONS AIME Transactions volumes have been numbered consecutively since No. 1 was issued in 1873, including papers for the period 1871-1873. One or more volumes have been issued each year and may be divided into three general time periods: General Volumes (1873-1927), Volumes classified by subject matter (1928-1949), and the present practice, begun in 1949, of issuing three volumes per year, one each in the fields of mining engineering, metallurgy, and petroleum technology. The broad divisions of subject matter in each of these volumes correspond to the technical areas of the three constituent societies of AIME. AIME's Technical Publications, usually designated by TP number's (until the change in numbering system by the Society of Mining Engineers in 1958), may, with some exceptions, be referenced to an AIME Transactions volume. Reference to a specific volume, rather than paper number, is the preferred reference, since the volumes are the form of publication most commonly available in libraries. In many cases, over the years, the Technical Publications may also have been available in some other form, either as separates or in a periodical. General. Volumes (Vols. 1-78, 1873-1927): Until 1927 all papers eligible for Transactions were published in general volumes with no systematic attempt made to segregate the material on the basis of the technological fields to which the papers related.. One volume per year was issued from 1873 until 1912; from 1912 until 1927 from two to four volumes were issued annually. In addition to the Transactions papers, these volumes carried some of the proceedings of the business meetings of AIMS. Subject Volumes. (Vols. 79-183; 1928-1949): The material for these volumes was segregated according to subject matter, and up. to seven volumes were issued a year. In the latter part of the period, from 1934 on, there was one volume each' year for the Petroleum, Institute of Metals, and Iron and Steel Divisions and-the remaining papers were grouped in various ways and is sued whenever sufficient numbers of papers had accumulated: The subject volumes containing mining engineering papers are listed in Table 1. The volumes for the period, 1936-1949 are included in this Cumulative Index. Each of the Transactions volumes carries on the binding the year of publication; this date does not give an indication of when the papers included were originally presented at meetings. The contents of the volumes usually list the meetings at which. the papers were presented. Not all papers from a given meeting necessarily are in one Transactions volume. Some of the earlier volumes do not have a number on the binding or within the volume. In 1934 numbers" were assigned to all Transactions volumes, commencing with the 1871-1873 volume as No. 1. THE copper-bearing rocks of Lake Superior are composed of a series of metamorphic rocks, comprised under the names of amygdaloid and conglomerate, in which the copper and silver found with them are pseudomorphs. These rocks, generally, have well-defined walls which cause them to separate easily. Generally, the country rock is sterile, but it occasionally rises into the copper-bearing rock, and then carries copper. Usually, the amygdaloids carry copper, and the greenstones or melaphyres which encase them do not. There is a very generally received opinion that the copper in these beds occurs in shoots. This does not appear to be proved, though the opinion seems to have some foundation from the experience of the Calumet & Hecla Mine, where a body of poor rock has been left, which, on the mine map, shows a general direction. The theory may be true of that individual mine, but too little work has been done in the other mines to draw any decided conclusion. The copper is very unequally disseminated in the rock, if any given piece be taken as an example, but, if the whole copper-bearing series be considered, its distribution is uniform. It may prove that there are certain directions in which the copper has been deposited more abundantly than in others, and these may be found to correspond with certain geological causes, but up to the present time the knowledge gained is not sufficient to warrant any general conclusion. These rocks are supplemented by a series of true fissure veins, of which there are several systems, making the amount of native copper very large. Unfortunately, except in the fissure veins, known as "mass-mines," the copper is so scattered through the rock, and is in such a fine state of division, that, although it is not always difficult to mine, it is always difficult to dress it sufficiently too make it pay. The metal is so uniformly distributed through these copper-bearing rocks that detached pieces, called " float," are found in digging on almost any land in the country. Petalite has been known for over a century, but at first it was presumed rare. However, it was found to be so abundant that it has become a new and extremely useful industrial tool. Mineralogy Petalite is a lithium-aluminum-silicate mineral. It was from petalite that J. A. Arfwedson first discovered lithium in 1818. The theoretical composition of Li2O • A12O8 • 8SiO2 is equivalent to 78.4 pct silica, 16.7 pct alumina and 4.9 pct lithia. The mineral in its known commercial occurrence is colorless to white and rarely gray, transluscent and rarely transparent. It is brittle, has a vitreous luster, and occurs usually in cleavable masses (fig. 1). It is classified as a di-silicate, but is similar in composition to the metasilicate spodumene, Li2O.-Al2O8-4SiO2 (table I). However, their specific gravities are quite different (3.13 to 3.20 for spodumene, 2.39 to 2.46 for petalite). Occurrence Petalite specimens have been reported in many localities; however, there are only three known countries having occurrences of commercial significance. The classic locality is Sweden's Utö Mines, which, although reportedly still containing considerable petalite, have been closed and are not expected to be operated in the near future. At Varuträsk, in northern Sweden, petalite carrying 4 pct lithium oxide is the main ore. In 1946 there was reported about 1000 tons on hand. However, the iron content was 0.60 pet too high for other than chemical use. Petalite has been reported in western Australia. At the Cottesloe mine, where small quantities have been reported available, it is produced in conjunction with feldspar. Petalite occurs in considerable quantity in the feldspar quarry at Londonderry, and it was estimated1 in 1943 that over 3700 tons might be available. The petalite in South West Africa was first discovered by F. J. Jooste, a lawyer by profession, in 1938. The following year he discovered a much larger deposit, and in 1948 another important discovery was made. These deposits occur near Kari-bib and constitute the only known commercial deposits. Their full extent has not yet been determined, but huge massive blocks of petalite of the purest grade, running into many thousands of tons, can be seen in all these deposits. To date, 60,000 tons of high grade, low iron containing ore has been blocked out in the major bodies. Mining for years to come will be confined to simple quarrying. The broad picture of petroleum refining engineering during 1934 continued to show a tendency in the direction of highly specialized processing improvements, particularly in manufacture of lubricating oil. The slowing up of the trend toward higher octane products in non-premium gasoline noticed in 1933 was definitely established as a fact by 1934 development, with just a slight indication of recession. No outstanding engineering achievements can be credited to 1934 in refinery cracking, unless the completion and successful operation of the 30,000-bbl. crude capacity combination cracking and skimming unit at Texas City, Texas, and a 20,000-bbl. similar unit in the East can be listed as such. Development and improvement was largely a continuation of previous lines of endeavor. Such trend as there is shows a continnation in the direction of very large integrated skimming and cracking units. A lessening of the cost of ethyl lead, coupled with the reaching of the octane number "ceiling," kept the subject of "reforming" low-octane gasoline into high-octane products pretty well in the background. Considerable interest, however, was shown during the year in cracking and polymerizing of refinery gases into high-octane motor fuel. The commercial development and application of this activity was greater in 1934 than during any previous year. Fair yields of gasoline of satisfactory stability and high antiknock value were reported, ranging from 2 to 8 gal. per 1000 cu. ft. of fixed refinery gas, yields varying with both the nature of refinery gas treated and processing methods. Assuming economic feasibility, regarding which there is still difference of opinion, gas polymerization offers the industry a possible outlet for its gases more in keeping with its basic chemical composition and value. The increased interest of railroads and heavy-duty truck and tractor manufacturers served to focus more attention on diesel fuels. The publicity given the Union Pacific diesel train, the Burlington "Zephyr" and others operated on special diesel fuels served to revive the intimations and fears of several years ago as to the ultimate replacement of the gasoline motor by diesel engines in even the passenger car field. The tidings of Mr. Hewitt's death, cabled to me at Rome, Italy, brought me a great shock as well as a sincere sorrow. I had left him, a few weeks before, not indeed in vigorous health, but still quite able to command recognition as a continued power in public affairs; and I thought him destined to enjoy for many years that final stage of a long, active and honored career, in which, having passed beyond the struggles and rivalries of business and of politics, his life and character could be justly appreciated by all men, like some noble work of art, already crowned, and marked henceforward "hors de concours." Moreover, he was, and would be to the end, not merely the passive recipient of admiration and esteem, but the source of iuspiring appeals, effective warnings and wise counsel. His rich and varied experience he had placed at the service of his fellows. His lightest word was weighty, and those who contradiEted him only injured their own cause thereby. Great trusts (true " trusts," in the old and proper sense of the term), like the Cooper Union, the Carnegie Institution, and others, still commanded his disinterested services. Great principles of liberty and of justice continued to be reinforced in perilous crises by his powerful advocacy; great measures were daily receiving from him a decisive impetus. No wonder it seemed to. us that this happy period of reward so well earned, and of beneacence so welcome to innumerable recipients of its blessing, must continue yet awhile. We did not expect the night instailtly to engulf the full-orbed sun. Nor, indeed, has this been our experience; in this instance, the sunset has left an afterglow more luminous than many a noonday. Everyone in the coal industry from top management to the preparation engineer is vitally interterested in recovering as much salable coal as possible from the run-of-mine product. Coal losses from a preparation plant occur in the solid refuse material being discharged from the plant and in the bleed-off slurry from the water circuit. The refuse is generally hauled from the plant in solid form by trucks, conveyors, or aerial trams to the refuse or culm banks or it may be crushed and transported by hydraulic methods to refuse ponds or dams. The loss of coal in refuse material and the extent of this problem has been covered in another paper. The loss of salable coal in the plant bleed-off slurry is one of the water circuit problems in coal preparation plants. Slurries originate at various places in the processing circuits and are usually disposed of by transportation to waste ponds known as slurry ponds. Even though the combustible material discharged as slurry and refuse from the plant is labeled a loss, the loss must only be considered temporary. There is a tendency at the present time to examine refuse and slurry losses and to reprocess these materials to recover valuable coal.
