SPODUMENE is a lithium-bearing pyroxene, and is an important source of lithium compounds. Because of its high alumina and lithia content. it might be a desirable constituent of glass batches. The use of spodumene in ceramics will undoubtedly increase, as it has been shown that a mixture of the proper proportions of this mineral with soda feldspar and potash feldspar has a much lower maturing temperature upon firing than has any one of the three components.1 The mineral spodumene seldom occurs as pure mineral, but ordinarily with feldspars, mica and quartz. All spodumene-bearing rocks tested contained these minerals as gangue. Small amounts of iron and manganese oxides also were present, usually as stains on the silicate grains. Mica associated with the spodumene carried a considerable amount of lithia. This was discovered in flotation tailings, which, although virtually free of spodumene grains when examined microscopically, showed 0.4 to 0.5 per cent Li20 on chemical analysis. The lithia content of micas picked from the North Carolina spodumene rock was variable. Some samples contained little lithia, others more than 3 per cent. In 1938, under the supervision of Oliver C. Ralston, [t] the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Tennessee Mineral Products Corporation, undertook to study the beneficiation of North Carolina spodumene by froth flotation. The Bureau had previously published investigations on the beneficiation of spodumene.2, 3 The methods described in the second publication3 did not give good results with badly weathered spodumene rock, so that more thorough investigation of the subject was warranted. The total amount of oil produced in the state of Oklahoma during the year 1928 was 242,286,400 bbl., as compared to 273,372,650 bbl. in 1927; 177,650,000 bbl. in 1926; and 167,900,000 bbl. in 1925. The year 1928 ranks second to 1927 in which more oil was produced in the state than in any previous year. The large in in 1927 and 1928 was due principally to the development of the Greater Seminole district. The decrease of approximately 31,000,000 bbl. in the 1928 production as compared with the production in 1927, was caused by a drop of nearly 8,500,000 bbl. in the Seminole district production and a more or less normal decline in the production of practically all the other older and more settled fields. During 1928 approximately 1800 producing wells were drilled in Oklahoma, which yielded during the year approximately 90,000,000 bbl. of oil. The average initial production of these wells was 850 bbl. per day, and the average daily production per well for the year was 137 bbl. The average daily production per well of the total number of wells producing in 1928 was 10.9 bbl., which is a 13.5 per cent. decrease from the 1927 average of 12.6 barrels. At the close of 1928 a total of 95,400 producing wells had been drilled in the state, and approximately 61,000 were still producing. The grand total amount of oil produced in the state from the time the first well was drilled up to and including 1928 was 2,553,000,000 bbl. The production in 1928 was 9.5 per cent. of the total oil produced in the state. Texas led all other states in 1928, with a production of 251,835,200 bbl. Oklahoma was second with 242,286,400 bbl., and California was third with 231,982,600 barrels. Fields outside Greater. Seminole District Practically all the old settled fields in Oklahoma experienced a normal and expected decline during the year 1928. The fields showing the most, pronounced decline as compared to 1927 were: Burbank, which dropped from 15,230,400 to 11,939, 150 bbl.; Tonkawa, from 7,692,000 to 4,952,900 bbl.; Garber, from 5,056,300 to 3,139,400 bbl., and Wewoka, from 6,188,-800 to 2,450,400 bbl. A surfactant waterflood, using a block copolymer of ethylene and propylene oxide (PLURONIC L64*), wa., started in 1956 in Kansas to determine the commercial feasibility of such a process. The production formation was the Bartlesville sand at a depth of 1,400 ft. Leares in the test area had attained both primary and secondary production peaks, and were on a normal decline when the tests were initiated. The injection wells were taking water at a reasonable pressure and none of the operating conditions were particularly unusual. The leases were selected primarily because of normal operating conditions, and not because of any serious problems demanding remedie>,. Oil production and water injection data were recorded during the 10-year test period, and their compilation indicates that the surfactant resulted in an increase of about 9 percent in secondary oil production. Other benefits derived from the surfactant injection were lower injection pressure that resulted in reduced power consumption and reduced erosion of the pumps; and lower calcium scale buildup. These fringe benefits more than offset the cost of the surfactant used. Introduction During the past several decades, considerable research has been carried out on secondary recovery of crude oil that remains in the producing formation despite the most efficient, current primary production practices. Methods are constantly sought of increasing recovery of oil, while at the same time improving the economic efficiency of operations. One method that has received intensive study over the years is the use of a surfactant as a waterflood additive. Laboratory tests show conclusively that dilute solutions of surfactants remove considerably more oil from uncon-solidated sand cores than does water alone.'- The loss of surfactant by adsorption at solid-liquid interfaces has caused serious doubt that surfactants can be used economically as waterflooding additives. This is especially true with anionic and cationic surfactants, and to a lesser extent with nonionic surfactants. This work was undertaken to determine the effectiveness in increasing oil production by injecting water containing small quantities of a nonionic surfactant. The surfactant selected was PLURONIC L64*, a block copolymer based on ethylene and propylene oxide, having the following structure The selection of the test site, a typical shoe-string sandstone type of field located at Batesville pool, Toronto District of Woodson County, Kans., was made because of its normal primary and secondary recovery operating conditions, and not because of any serious operating problems. When the tests were begun, the field was experiencing the customary post-peak production decline of a waterflood. Using for the tests a field that was on a normal production decline, while maintaining constant all variables other than the addition of the surfactant. was of varamount importance if success or failure was to be attributed to a particular cause. It was reasoned that if a surfactant was added to the injection waters and nothing else was done to influence the oil production or injection of water, the effects of the surfactant on the flood could be determined precisely. Production History The first well in the tested field was drilled in 1935. Gas repressurization began immediately, but it was not until Aug., 1938, that the major portion of the field was developed. During the period of repressurization, 1,700 MMcf of gas was injected. As can be seen from the curves of Fig. 1, the production peak from gas injection was attained in 1937 and a normal production decline followed. Alkaline alcohol solutions were investigated by the Federal Bureau of Mines for improving the desorption rate of gold and silver from metal-laden activated carbon generated in gold processing circuits. Factors affecting the desorption, such as temperature, alcohol content, type of alcohol, and alkalinity, were studied. Nearly complete metal desorption was obtained in 5 to 6 hr at 80º C using a solution containing about 20 vol-pct alcohol and 1 pct sodium hydroxide. Sodium sulfide was shown to be effective for selectively precipitating silver from the carbon strip solutions, thereby providing a means for producing high- purity gold by subsequent electrolysis.

The effect of hydrogen pretreatment of alumina, magnesia, and zirconia crucibles on reduced oxygen levels in iron charges has been studied. Hydrogen treatment of commercial high-purity magnesia crucibles was observed to produce as high as 70 pct reduction in oxygen content in iron melts. Hydrogen treatment of the commercial high-purity grade zirconia crucibles produced a 25 pct reduction in oxygen levels in iron melts. An average reduction of Knoop hardness of 47 pct was recorded on the iron charges melted in hydrogen-treated crucibles. On the basis of the experiments and the free-energy diagram, it appears that the major source of reducible oxygen to the iron charge is the suboxides and impurity oxides rather than the major oxide of the crucible. Suitable pretreatment of the crucibles to reduce and remove these oxides yields low oxygen levels in iron melted in the crucibles. DURING the last decade, attempts to produce more pure and uniform alloyed metals have brought about the development of many new melting techniques. Notable among these are vacuum-induction melting, inert and consumable-electrode melting, the cold-mold technique, and numerous techniques for removal of impurities by chemical reaction. However great the achievements in this field, metals must still be melted in contact with media of varying reactivity; i.e., gas, ceramic, and slag. Studies have been made to attain an understanding of the reactions that take place during melting, including slag-metal reactions and equilibria, equilibrium of hydrogen and water vapor, and carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide with oxygen in molten iron. These reactions have been treated quite thoroughly. There is one condition, however, that has been widely overlooked, and, to the author's knowledge, only cursive investigation has been made of it. This is the reaction between the ceramic crucible material and the iron charge. In recent years, Hadley and Bianchi' made a series of studies on hydrogen deoxidation of iron in magnesia crucibles. Bianchi2 studied crucible-FeO equilibria in the temperature range 1525°to 1650°C in high vacuum with, however, inconsistent results. Richardson and Jeffes3 in their series of articles on thermodynamic reactions in the making of iron and steel refer to Wentrup and Hieber's4 work on iron and aluminum deoxidation. Their pork included melting iron in alumina crucibles and measuring the aluminum and oxygen content in the iron. Because of the low values obtained, question has arisen of their analytical accuracy.3 Dastur and chipman5 obtained values on hydrogen-oxygen equilibrium in molten iron contained in alumina crucibles similar to those obtained in experiments in the present program. Hochmann6 studied removal of impurities in chromium irons in high vacuum. His results with respect to oxygen level in chromium-iron melted in magnesia crucibles are consistent with results we have obtained.

Yield stress in single crystals of zinc was shown to be dependent on prior annealing temperature and rate of cooling after annealing. Rate of strain hardening beyond the yield was not sensitive to annealing procedure. A tentative mechanism for the effect was discussed. COMPARATIVE mechanical tests of metal single crystals generally show a large scatter of results. Many factors may contribute to this variation. The present investigation was undertaken to evaluate the influence of two factors not ordinarily considered of major importance—annealing temperature and cooling rate after annealing. Since plastic properties of crystals are thought to depend on the presence of lattice imperfections, it follows that a variation in properties should result from differences in the distribution and density of these imperfections. Furthermore, in the light of current theories of interaction between edge dislocations and lattice vacancies,' it seems possible that annealing temperature and subsequent rate of cooling might play a part in this distribution. Analysis of the effect of these variables on plastic properties may lead to a better understanding of the annealed state. Single crystals of zinc which have been strained in simple shear undergo complete recovery of mechanical properties upon subsequent annealing. This behavior is useful because a single specimen can be used repeatedly, thus eliminating the uncontrollable variables introduced by the use of many crystals. The test section of the crystals used for these experiments was a cylinder 1/8 in. thick with a cross-sectional area of about 1/3 sq in. The specimens were acid-machined from spherical single crystals 1 in. in diameter in such a way that the slip plane (0001) was at right angles to the axis of the cylinder. In testing, a shear stress was applied along one of the slip directions, [2110] in the (0001) plane.' All crystals, unless otherwise noted, were grown in a helium atmosphere from molten 99.99 pct pure Horse Head Special Zinc. Fig. 1 is a family of curves obtained from one crystal. Each curve was obtained by deforming the crystal to 10 pct strain at a rate of 3 pct per min, following an anneal of 1 hr at 260°C. The strain direction was reversed every other time so that no progressive change in shape of the specimen took place during the series of tests. Since the stress-strain curve was reproducible within a fairly narrow range under the same conditions of annealing, it was then possible to determine the effect of changes in annealing conditions. A crystal was tested repeatedly as previously described but the annealing temperature and rate of cooling preceding each test were varied (Fig. 2). Two cooling rates were used, approximately 30°C per min and 3°C per min. Annealing was conducted at three temperatures, 200°, 300°, and 400°C. For a given annealing time and rate of cooling the room temperature flow stress was higher the higher the annealing temperature. The increase in flow stress was small as the annealing temperature was increased from 200° to 300°C but rose rapidly when the annealing temperature was raised from 300" to 400°C. Faster cooling from the high temperature produced an even greater strengthening of the crystal. The curves were obtained in the order indicated by the numbers. An analysis ulas made of powder-paltern peaks from cold-rolled polycrystalline copper and from copper powders, compacted into briquets (1 in. diameter) with pressures up to about 106 psi. Powder-pattern peaks from both contact faces were measured with a diffractometer and CuKa radiation. Laltice-parameter measurements indicate the presence of residual stresses in the bulk specimen of the order of a - -10 kg per sq mm after 93 pct reduction in thickness, and give some evidence for the occurrence of deformation stacking faults (probability a - 0.003) in both bulk and powder samples. Fourier analyses of the line profiles were carried out on the (111) - (222) and (200) - (400) Pairs of reflections. The particle sizes decrease rapidly with increasing deformation and reach asymptotic values of De (111) = 550A and D, (200) = 350A at about 25 pct reduction in thickness or 80,000 psi pressure for compaction. The anisotropy of the particle sizes indicates the presence of microtwins and stacking faults on (111) planes. The rms strains increase also with deformation and reach limiting values of 2 x 10-3 in the [100] direction and 1 x 10-3 in the [Ill] direction at a distance L = 100A normal to the reflecting planes. THE diffraction of X-rays in cold-worked, polycrystalline, fcc metals and alloys yields Debye-Scherrer patterns in which the individual (hkl) lines may show a broadening, a shift, and an asymmetric shape.' These effects can be explained by the fragmentation of the small, coherently diffracting domains, the presence of residual elastic strains in the lattice, and the formation of stacking faults. X-ray studies of stacking faults in fcc metals and alloys have been methodically performed during the last few years, but so far most of the investigators dealt with cold-worked powder specimens obtained by filing.2-8,10-19 In such specimens, the crystals are randomly oriented and the average elastic strains are assumed to be zero, so that the observed peak shifts are due to stacking faults only. The agreement between X-ray diffraction theory1,20 and experiment is generally good. On the contrary, cold-worked, polycrystalline bulk specimens (after wire drawing, rolling, plastic deformation by tension or compression, etc.) contain residual elastic strains, which may not average to zero in the surface of the specimen and show very strong preferred orientation of certain lattice planes (texture) parallel to the specimen surface. Nonzero elastic strains also produce peak shifts, the magnitudes of which depend upon the crystallographic orientation of the reflecting lattice planes in elastically anisotropic materials as well as on the type of plastic deformation and which have to be taken into account when measuring stacking-fault probabilities in deformed bulk specimens.21-23 The purpose of the present investigations was to perform a detailed X-ray analysis on a bulk specimen of a fcc metal deformed by rolling at room temperature and on powder of the same material deformed by compaction, and to compare these results with those previously obtained on cold-worked filings.18 Pure copper was chosen for this study since it is known to produce only a small quantity of stacking faults by filing at room temperature.3,16,17,19 The residual elastic strain in the surface of the bulk copper should be the predominant factor determining

PREPARATION CONTROL IN UNDERGROUND MINING Selective Mining According to district Depending upon the particular geographic loca- tion or seam characteristics, modern raw coal preparation practices can be used to obtain improved product quality and uniformity. Nevertheless, certain coal markets may require only marginal quality while others may require very high quality, and these objectives may be sought by commencing the preparation of coal underground at the "working face." Under- ground preparation involves choosing those portions of the seam which can be cleaned to satisfy predetermined market requirements involving ( 1 ) maintenance of uniformity in chemical quality, (2) elimination of removable impurities, (3) control of sizes and size ratios, and (4) control of moisture. The methods employed to attain these objectives vary widely with the (1 ) seam under development, (2) mining equipment available, and (3) changing trends in the consuming markets. When a mining property is opened and development progresses from one section to another, the (1) petrography of the coal in the seam does not remain uniform, (2) character of roof and floor are subject to change, and (3) character and prevalence of mineral impurities are subject to considerable variation. The quality of coal shipped to market from any mine depends upon intelligent foresight, planning, execution, and supervision. Mining becomes a highly technical art. The quality of coal as determined by chemical and petrographic analysis is without question one of the most important considerations in the development and life of any coal-mining property. Variations in such proper- ties as volatile matter, ash, sulfur, Btu content, and petrography are of considerable interest, and to a limited extent so are such properties as phosphorous content, free swelling index, plasticity, hardness, pressure formation during coking, and ash composition. The maximum and minimum specifications of these characteristics as established by competitive market conditions place definite limits on the marketability of a coal.

The chemical reaction occurring in collection of nonmetallic minerals with amine-type collectors was early postulated by students of flotation phenomena to be metathesis between the mineral and the collector, involving exchange between the amine-bearing (aminium) ion and the cation of the mineral, and formation at the mineral surface of an oriented film of the amine salt of the mineral anion. Qualitative evidence of exchange has been obtained on several occasions at Columbia. Thus 1000 C.C. of a solution containing 495 mg of laurylamine hydrochloride was shaken 17 min. with 100 grams of barite and ground in a porcelain mill to pass a 200-mesh screen; the mixture was then set aside for 48 hr. Filtrate therefrom analyzed 476 mg. per liter of laurylamine hydrochloride. There was no substantial loss of chloride ion (78.4 mg. per liter in the original; 74 in the filtrate). No successful analyses were concluded for barium ion. Earlier, confessedly rough work with scheelite indicated a solution gain in Ca++ equivalent to about one-half the aminium ion lost. Real quantitative roof of the exchange, in the form of an established stoichiometric balance, is unknown to the authors. The data of the present paper, however, obtained from experiments designed on the basis of the exchange hypothesis, constitute strong evidence of its truth, and at the same time point the way to economic utilization of the expensive nitrogen-bearing collectors in concentration of the low-priced nonmetallic minerals. The basic postulate underlying the experiments performed was that, if the collecting reaction is of the type R+ + Y- + MX = RX + M+ + Y- where R = aminium ion, Y = the anion of the amine salt, and M and X are, respectively, the cation and anion of the mineral, the reaction should obey qualitatively the implications of the mass-action and solubility-product laws. This is to say that coating and collection should be aided by the addition to the solution of either ion (R+ or X-) of the collector-coating compound, and hindered by the addition of either of the ions M+ or y-. Experimental work comprised determination of (,) the relative solubilities of the laurylammonium salts of a variety of nonmetallic-mineral anions; and (21 the contact angles' of various minerals in solutions containing different concentrations of the postulated controlling ions. ZIRCONIUM is noticeably embrittled at room temperature by hydride precipitate not only in notch-impact tests but also in tensile-impact tests.' The embrittlement in slow-strain tensile samples is much less severe. To understand better the relationship of the hydride precipitate to the strain-rate effect in tensile samples, the surfaces of chemically polished zirconium tensile samples strained at a slow rate (0.03 in. per min head speed) and at an impact rate (18.1 fps hammer speed) were examined in the light and electron microscopes. Vacuum-degassed samples and hydrogenated samples (100 ppm hydrogen) were examined. The hydrogenated samples were slow cooled from 800°C. The most apparent difference between slow-strain and impact tensile samples was the preponderance of twinning over slip in impact samples as opposed to relatively little twinning in slow-strain samples. The twin bands in hydrogenated samples often terminated on hydride needles as seen in Fig. 1. Almost opposite the twin terminus is a fine crack and a nearly round fissure. Holes near the areas where single lens-shaped twins or opposing pairs terminate on hydride particles also could be seen In the light micrbscope. Quite frequently, microcracks associated with a partial row of hydride particles were visible, as in Fig. 2, indicating that the crack was parallel to a row of hydride particles. Some samples were chemically polished after straining to remove metal with a minimum of disturbance of internal voids. Fig. 3 shows a crack in the interior of a hydrogenated impact sample. Holes along grain boundaries were seen after impact in both degassed and hydrogenated samples. Very few microcracks were seen in degassed samples after impact or slow strain, or in hydrogenated samples after slow strain.

New discoveries of metallic ores continued to be made, discoveries based on extensive geologic and geophysical work but nonetheless made in part because of good fortune.

The Cle Elum nickeliferous iron deposit is in Kittitas County, Washington, in a rugged, mountainous region about 23 miles north of the town of Cle Elum. The Biewett Pass deposit, which is similar in character and occurrence, is in Chelan County, about 18 miles east of the Cle Elum deposit. A more or less continuous ore zone may extend between the two deposits, since iron ore is reported to have been discovered at Iron Mountain, which lies directly between them. The ore probably was formed by meta-morphism of laterite resulting from Ieach-ing of serpentine derived from peridotite. It consists largely of magnetite grains distributed through a matrix of limonitic material containing a small amount of hematite and chromite. Many of the chromite grains have shells and inclusions of magnetite. The magnetite grains range in size from 1200-mesh to 1/4-in., the average size being 48 to 65-mesh; the chromite grains range from 20 to 150-mesh. The gangue minerals are olivine and serpentine with a small, amount of chlorite, and appear both as very thin bands in the ore and 's minute fragments in the limonitic matrix. The nickel is present as minUte inclusions of a nickel silicate mineral within the magnetite and gangue par- ticles, varying in size from 1500 to about 280-mesh. Detailed analyses of 3000-lb. lots of Cle Elum and Blewett Pass ore are given in Table I. Preliminary Tests Attempts to beneficiate the ore by ore-dressing methods, including various 'cornbinations of sink and float, tabling, jigging, flotation, and magnetic separation, were consistently unsuccessful. A wide variety of roasting and leaching tests were made on both raw and reduced ore, but in most of the tests little or no nickel was extracted, and in none did the extraction exceed 50 Per cent.
