Edward W. Parker,* Philadelphia, Pa.—At the New York meeting of the Institute a year ago, Mr. R. V. Norris presented a paper on anthracite mining costs, in which he gave the results of an intensive study of this subject by the Engineers' Committee of the United States Fuel Administration. Within the last 30 days, the Federal Trade Commission has issued an official report on the same subject, which covers a longer period of time and comprises statistics of realization values and margins that were pot comprehended in the paper by Mr. Norris. As, however, the data utilized by Mr. Norris formed also a part of the basis for the report of the Federal Trade Commission, a brief digest of the latter may not be out of place at this meeting. The report of the Federal Trade Commission covers primarily the two calendar years 1917 and 1918, divided into five periods which furnish opportunity for the study of how the influence of certain definite factors affected either the cost of production or the price, or both, during the 24 months. The first period, January to April, 1917, which may be considered the basic period, comprised the 4 months in 1917 during which the wage agreement of May, 1916, without modification, was in effect. During this period, the labor cost on fresh-mined coal is placed by the Commission's report at $1.79 per gross ton, the total cost at $2.66, the average realization at $3.29, and the "margin" (sales realization over total f.o.b. mine cost) at $0.63. The second period covers the four months from May 1 to August 31, during which time the first of the supplemental wage agreements (supplemental to the agreement of 1916) was in effect. It was also the period during which the summer discounts were in effect and when prices were practically fixed by a voluntary agreement between the operators and the Federal Trade Commission. It was, further, the period in which the 75 cents differential on prepared sizes permitted to the individual operators by the Federal Trade Commission began; at that time, also, on account of war conditions an unusually large quantity of steam sizes were marketed at exceptionally good prices. Selecting efficient machinery for an underground mining operation is a highly skilled art that still depends largely on human judgment and experience. In a coal mine, for example, there is no better way to predict the results of operating with a cutting machine or a continuous miner than to go underground with a sharp-pointed miner's pick. The trained eye can detect the depth of point penetration, cleavage planes, roof and floor strata, and many other conditions impossible to determine in a laboratory. Even so, however, an entirely new set of conditions may lie unexposed just a few feet behind the solid face. The candid truth of the matter is that practically nothing is known of the phenomenon of extracting a mineral from a solid. Consequently, the selection of mineral extraction machinery and systems must be based on results obtained elsewhere under apparently similar conditions. A recent study of the problem of equipment and system analysis was conducted in the coal mining regions of West Virginia. This state was chosen for study because it afforded representative sampling. The 172 coal mines investigated ecompassed seam heights ranging from less than 30 in. to over 84 in. and covered virtually all known coal mining conditions except two. The exceptions are the extreme pitch of coal seams in the western United States and British Columbia and the "bumps" encountered in the Rocky Mountains. Both of these extreme conditions are worthy of individual study.

IN 1900, Elmore found that if an acidulated pulp was stirred up with an oil which was relatively insoluble in and lighter than water, and the mixture was al-lowed to stratify, much of the sulfide would be found hanging to the lower surface of the floating body of oil and could be skimmed off or overflowed with it. The action of the flotation agent here is two-fold, first to select the sulfide from the gangue-what to-day is called collection-and second, to buoy the col-lected sulfide away from the gangue. The action in collecting is illustrated by Fig. 1, which contrasts the behavior of drops of oil brought, under water, to the surfaces of gangue and sulfide particles, respectively. The oil displaces water from the surface of the sulfide; the water displaces oil from the gangue surface. If, instead of considering the solid particles the fixed parts of the system of oil, water and solids, we consider the oil and water fixed and the solids pre-sented to the surface of contact, the condition will be as shown in Fig. 2 ; the sulfide tends to be drawn into the interface and the gangue to be excluded. The sul-fide particles are held in the oil-water surface by the tension of this surface. The buoyant effect is supplied by the oil droplets in bringing the sulfides to the water surface, but not in holding them there.

Although geothermal energy has been used by mankind for thousands of years and has even been used to generate electricity since the turn of the century, it is only in the last few years that the threatened energy crisis has focused attention on this resource. Geothermal exploration and development is being carried out in at least thirty-five countries on five continents. The status of geothermal energy production, however, is rudimentary with about 800 MW installed generating capacity worldwide, equal to about 0.1% of the world's total energy production.' The world's first (1904) commercial generating site at Lardarello, Italy, will soon be surpassed by developments at The Geysers, Calif. There are other successfully operating geothermal power projects in New Zealand, Japan, USSR, Mexico and Iceland with pilot plants planned or under construction in Chile, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Turkey and the Philippines. The preponderance of exploration and development is being sponsored or assisted by individual governments, by the UN or by the U.S. Agency for International Development

Alteration of the electronic distribution of mineral surfaces by light irradiation has been used to modify the adsorption characteristics of flotation reagents. Energy of a few electron volts is suficient to cause the necessary transitions that either enhance or retard the adsorption phenomenon. The adsorption characteristics of potassium ethyl xanthate on galena and marmatite are presented as functions of the energy of illumination, type of semiconductor, and surface oxidation. In dilute solutions, the adsorption differences are readily detected by controlled kinetic measurements. The correlation between the electronic distribution and the adsorption and desorption phenomena at the solid surface is gaining more attention and acceptance. These interrelations have found a practical application in mineral processing since all of the sulfide minerals display semiconducting properties. By varying the ratio of free electron to electron vacancies, the separation of ilmenite from rutilel and zircon from pyrochlore" has been executed successfully. Plaksin et al.' indicate three possible ways of utilizing the semiconductor properties of a mineral. The first one involves the control of the oxidation-reduction potential of the liquid phase, the second one consists of allowing selected additives to diffuse through the mineral surface, while the third one entails a change in the adsorption and chemical activity of minerals by irradiating their surface. The aim of the present work is to consider the effect of irradiation on the adsorption-desorption characteristics of natural minerals. The southern West Virginia coalfield was formed in a rapidly subsiding depositional basin associated with deep-seated growth faults. Subsidence began to the southeast during deposition of the Pocahontas Formation, and then shifted to the northwest during deposition of the New River, Kanawha, and Allegheny Formations. Rocks of all the coal-bearing formations grade into massive sandstones to the northwest. For the No. 3 Pocahontas, Sewell, Campbells Creek, and No. 5 Block coals discussed in this study, the overall sulfur and ash values of each coal seam increase gradually toward the northwest. The thickness of each coal tends to increase toward the southeast. These trends are partly a reflection of the differential subsidence of the coal basin along with varying degrees of peat accumulation and degradation. The northwest side of the coal swamps underwent relatively less subsidence and, thus, more degradation due to increased aerial exposure, with a resulting increase in the sulfur and ash values of the coals, and a decrease in the thickness. The open sea existed to the west of the coal swamps, and this marine environment also contributed to the higher sulfur values to the northwest. Coals of the Pottsville Group in the southern West Virginia coalfield generally have sulfur values between 0.6-1.0% with some as high as 2-3% on the northwest edge of the coal basin.

Some time ago a study was initiated at the Colorado School of Mines in an effort to arrive at a better understanding of the stress fields developed within drill bits under dynamic loading and the influence that these stress fields could have on the failure of the bits. Particular emphasis has been given to the influence that bit shape has on the establishment of highly localized, potentially destructive stress inhomogeneities within the bit. The study has been divided into three phases involving three velocity regimes: impacts at very low velocities, 0 to 20 ft/sec, a velocity range in which dynamic effects are just beginning to be found; impacts at velocities ranging from 20 to several hundred ft/sec, a range commonly encountered in practical drilling operations; and impulsive loading through the detonation of explosives, a region in which the dynamic effects are greatly exaggerated and made more identifiable. The ultimate objective is to provide basic data which will enable the mitigation through judicious design of the frequency and severity of these transient concentrations of intense stress, thereby prolonging and increasing drill efficiency. This paper presents results of the third phase of this study — the development of a better understanding of the dynamics and mechanics of failures caused by transient stress-wave interactions. The impulsive loading or transient waves in these experiments were generated by detonating small explosive charges placed on the ends of Plexiglas cylindrical rods terminating in truncated cones. Under such intense loading, dynamic effects are greatly exaggerated and, hence, made more identifiable. The explosion generates a high-intensity transient stress disturbance which moves through the rod, reflects from surfaces which lie in its path, and establishes momentarily narrow regions of high concentrations of stress where failure of fracture may occur. The peregrinations of these waves, their interactions and their effects have already been described in the literature (see, for example, Refs. 1 and 2). The locations and extent of the regions quite apparently are strongly dependent on specimen shape, making it possible through judicious shaping of specimens to relocate the highly stressed regions, minimize their extent, or eliminate them entirely. These experiments were designed, first, to identify more clearly the vulnerable regions in geometries relevant to drill-bit design and, then, to modify these regions in a predictable way by changing specimen shape. Through this latter process, it is anticipated that better bit design might evolve. The specimens used in the experiments were cylindrical rods, 1 1/2 and 1 1/8 in. in diameter, ended by a truncated cone, with the cone angles ranging from 45° to 130°. Upper cone face diameters were 1/2, 3/4, or 1 in. A small plastic-covered electric blasting cap detonated on the axis of the specimen produced the spherical shock wave. The detonators used were Olin Mathieson No. 6, which induced into the rod a transient saw-toothed stress disturbance of about 3-microseconds duration, corresponding to a wave length of 0.3 in. in the Plexiglas. Five distinct systems of fracture were observed: (1) along the axis of the rod, a lower system of fractures, the cracks focusing around one point for specimens having cone angles of 80° and 90° and, as the cone angle was increased, spreading downward; (2) just above these fractures, an upper system of fractures composed of horizontal cracks observable in some specimens but not of any appreciable extent; (3) a third system of axial cracks still above the latter, observable in the small cone-angle specimens; (4) in the upper part of the specimen, a system of radial fractures extending from the blasting point; and (5) circular spalling due to reflection of the wave on the boundary of the cylinder. Only the first three systems, the axial fractures, are examined here. LOWER TENSILE FRACTURE SYSTEM The first, lower system of tensile fractures, shown in the photograph of Fig. 1, was observed in almost all of the specimens. Given: One large, but dated open-pit copper mine and processing plants, down about one third in production capacity in decade because of declining ore grade. Solve for: Restoration of former peak capacity without further losses during period of reconstruction. That is the problem that Kennecott's Utah Cop- per Division began solving in 1963. Most of the work went to a task force of engineers, several of whom were plucked out of line jobs and assigned to the so-called "Expansion Project" for the duration. There was no doubt from the beginning that effective cooperation between Expansion Project engineers and operators was critical to success, and personnel was chosen accordingly. This foresight paid off. The Expansion Project is all but complete, and the Utah Copper Division is returning to its rated capacity of 300,000 tons per year of copper metal.

PROFESSOR HENRY M. HOWE, New York, N. Y. :-This paper of Mr. Sauveur's is extremely interesting. It is one of those papers that one wishes to read in the quiet of one's study, where it can be read with great profit. There are many points which he makes which I think are of very great value, in particular as to the importance of getting fine ;grained graphite by a relatively rapid cooling, combined with a high percentage of silicon. That theory would seem to be very promising; how far it has actually been carried out very likely Dr. Moldenke can. tell us.

AT most mines where large tonnages are handled, "bulldozing" or secondary blasting is an important and costly operation. To reduce the large blocks from primary blasting operations or stoping so that they will be small enough to pass through the chutes into the cars at the haulage level, and not too large for the crushing plant, requires blasting. Often this is done by placing a few sticks of dynamite on top of a block with or without a capping of mud, but to consume less dynamite and to promote safety, most secondary blasting is now done by blockholing, or the drilling of holes 6 to 12 in. long in the blocks, using only a part of a stick of dynamite per hole. Regardless of the method of blasting, however, the term "bulldozing chamber" is applied to the room where this work is done. Bulldozing chambers permit secondary blasting at all times in a safe place without disturbance to the other mining operations. The chambers are usually high above the haulage level and well below the stope level or open-pit floor. In most instances the material is passed through a grizzly in the bulldozing chamber, but sometimes no grizzlies are used. One to four raises extend from the chamber to the stope floor and one or two from the haulage level to the chamber floor. Occasionally large slabs of ore or rock choke the raises above the bull-dozing chamber, and these have to be blasted by attaching a bundle of dynamite sticks on the end of a long pole and placing them up in the raise between the pieces causing the choke. This is called "chute-blasting." To give a picture of the progressive developments in the use of the bulldozing chamber, a few typical mines that show the application of this method to both metal and limestone mines have been selected for description here. Limestone mines have been included because many metal miners do not realize to what extent the nonmetallic, or rock, miners are now applying metal-mining methods successfully in their operations. The bulldozing chamber is the "neck of the bottle" for some mines.

THIS paper deals primarily with an investigation of ball-mill liners that was conducted by the writer over a period of six years at the Mammoth mill in Arizona. The investigation covered a wide variety of designs of liners in both primary and secondary mills. The comparative results are presented herein as evidence of the extent to which design influenced liner life and mill performance. FLOWSHEET The feed to the Mammoth mill was a complex, oxidized, gold-silver-lead-molybdenum-vanadium ore with rhyolite, andesite and granite as gangue. Although the ore varied between stopes, the long-term average in character remained substantially the same. Capacity was 560 tons per day. [t] Fig. I shows an abbreviated flowsheet of the grinding section of the mill. PRIMARY BALL MILL A 3-ft. Symons shorthead crusher in open circuit crushed to ¼ -in. maximum one-way dimension the feed to the 5 by 10-ft. Marcy open-end ball mill. The mill rotated at 80 per cent of critical speed and was charged with 4-in. forged steel balls. Cast balls were used for a few months at a slight reduction in ball cost, but breakage of the large balls reduced the ball size and grinding capacity to a point where the over-all costs suffered out of proportion to the saving in cost of balls. For metallurgical reasons, the finished product of the mill was maintained at minus 8-mesh. This coarse product, plus the very abrasive ore and the absence of fines in the feed, caused abnormally rapid wear of the mill liners. The resultant high operating cost led to the most extensive phase of the investigation. [ ] In order to clarify the difference in design of the various types of liners used, Fig. 2 shows the profiles with the arrangement in which grinding balls of maximum size would lie on the face of the liners. The results with each type of shell liner in the primary mill are shown in Table I.

Disposal of fine coal refuse is one of the major technical problems which could adversely affect growth and development of the coal industry. At present one of the most: common methods for disposal of fine coal refuse slurry involves impounding the slurry behind dams. However meeting new federal and state government regulations for building, maintaining and reclaiming these impoundments in addition to terrain and space considerations render this technique to be only marginally competitive with other disposal methods. The coal industry has been actively engaged in developing alternate disposal techniques which are economically feasible and environmentally acceptable. A review of coal refuse disposal problem and current refuse disposal practice both in the eastern and western coal fields is presented. Various promising techniques being developed for economical and safe disposal of fine coal refuse slurry are also discussed.

After showing continued and very satisfactory progress until the close of 1931, the oil industry of the Soviet, Union experienced very great difficulties, and since 1932 has not only failed to complete its assigned quotas but has fallen farther and farther behind them, and in fact during 1932 and 1933 Russian production has been below production in 1931. In 1934 the total crude oil production of 169,200,000 bbl. exceeded that of the former peak year, 1931, when 156,100,000 bbl. were produced. The production during 1934 amounted to 78.65 per cent of the plan. The failure to complete the plan has been due to the inability of the oil trusts to develop new fields; the fields that have been producing since 1917 still account for between 75 to 80 per cent of total production. The failure of the Soviet Government to develop new fields has been due to unsatisfactory organization of the geological work, to the extremely slow drilling of wells and their exploitation, and to the very much delayed development of the few areas that have been discovered. The official overestimation of the proven reserves of the country has undoubtedly been an important factor in giving the Soviet industry too much confidence when actually such reserves have been small. The official Soviet estimate of proven reserves of Russia is now placed at 21,000,000,000, bbl., while in fact such reserves, if estimated on a conservative basis, do not exceed 4,200,000,000 bbl., as will be shown later in this review. The refinery branch of the industry also showed unsatisfactory results with a recovery of gasoline, both straight-run and cracked, of only some 16 per cent of the total runs to stills. In fact, the showing of the refineries has been so unsatisfactory that the exports of gasoline have been greatly curtailed from 1933 to 1934, dropping to 10,000,000 bbl. in 1934 from 12,230,000 bbl. in 1933. With the indicated increase in domestic demand, together with but slightly increased refining capacity, the volume of available gasoline for export probably will be reduced to about 6,000,000 bbl. during 1935. The geographic distribution of constructed refineries has been unsatisfactory and the crude oils from Baku had to be transported by tankers

THE Tri-State Zinc, Inc., Galena, Ill., was confronted with the problem of securing ore from a deposit because the hoisting shaft was several thousand feet from the mill. The orebody is several thousand feet long, averaging 200 ft in width and 60 ft in height and opened up by vertical shafts some 300 ft deep. Mining is by the room-and-pillar method. During the initial operation the ore was loaded by conventional electric 1/2 -yd boom-and-dipper shovels and hauled to the shaft by 8-ton diesel trucks. This underground ore loading and hauling was well adapted to the conditions and productive of low costs per ton. However, with the mill situated as mentioned, a triple handling of all broken rock was necessary: 1-from the stope to the shaft by truck, 2-up the shaft by skip or can into the surface hopper, and 3-by truck from the surface hopper to the crushing plant at the mill. In addition to the repeated handling, serious troubles were encountered during the winter because of freezing in the shaft hopper.

Located in the Elliot Lake mining district of Canada, the Denison mine lies between Sudbury to the east and Sault Ste. Marie to the west. This area is overlain by Huronian sediments filling a basin in the Keewatin basement complex. Subsequent folding of these sediments developed a synclinal structure, known locally as the Quirke Lake Trough, which forms the northern portion of the now famous big Z structure, the geological trademark of this region. Plunging to the west and extending nine miles from the granite outcropping in the north to the Keewatin lava contact to the south, the syncline has dips of 10° to 45° on the north limb and 10° to 20° on the south limb.

Techniques for studying the performance characteristics of heterogeneous reservoirs have been developed. The effect of permeability variation on both the steady-state and the transient flow of a single fluid has been investigated. Limited comparisons with field and laboratory data have been made. The physical models studied consist of random three-dimensional arrays of homogeneous porous blocks. The permeabilities of the individual elements are assigned according to a specific distribution function; uniform anisotropy is introduced by varying the relative dimensions of the blocks. A particular model is perturbed simply by re-arranging its elements at random. The behavior of a physical model is determined by digitally solving its numerical analogue. Based on computational experiments, subject to the restrictions implied by the assumptions that were made, the following general conclusions have been drawn. 1. The most probable behavior of a heterogeneous system approaches that of a homogeneous system with a permeability equal to the geometric mean of the individual permeabilities. 2. The effects of flow geometry and anisotropy on the most probable value of the effective permeability of a heterogeneous medium are finite but not significant. 3. The permeability determined from a pressure build-up curve lor a heterogeneous reservoir gives a reasonable value for the effective permeability of the drainage area. 4. A qualitative measure of the degree of heterogeneity and its spatial configuration are obtained from a comparative study of core analysis and pressure build-up data. It has been indicated that these conclusions are predicated on the assumption that the core analysis and the pressure build-up data represent true reservoir characteristics. Common sources of error in these data have been discussed. One of the most significant problems of reservoir engineering is that of determining the nature and the disposition of the heterogeneities that inevitably occur in petroliferous formations. It is with this problem that this paper is concerned. Extensive research, both theoretical and experimental, has provided reasonable descriptions of the physical processes that are associated with primary and secondaryrecovery mechanisms. Similar progress in the fie1d of numerical analysis and the evolution of truly high-speed digital computers have made it feasible to calculate the behavior of these mechanisms under almost any environmental conditions. It appears to be logical, then, to conclude that the mechanistic performance of any reservoir can be predicted with some confidence. Unfortunate1y, a necessary condition for the validity of this conclusion is that the formation be adequately described in a macroscopic sense. This condition cannot be satisfied ill general; therefore, a frustrating situation currently exists — it is possible to compute the effect of reservoir heterogeneity on behavior, but it is not possible to specify the heterogeneity itself. In many cases, the predicted behavior of a project is so completely dominated by irregularities in the formation's physical properties that the gratuitous assumptior, of a particular form for the variation can reduce the solution of the problem to a mere tautological exercise. While all porous media are microscopically heterogeneous, only macroscopic fluctuations need be considered since the fundamental concepts of reservoir mechanics are based on macroscopic quantities. For the simplest case in which only one physical property varies from point to point, the degree of heterogeneity that is apparent depends on three distinct factors, i.e., the nature of the property's variation (frequency distribution), its disposition (spatial distribution) and the inherent stability of the mechanism being studied. Consequently, any attempt to devise an unambiguous scale of heterogeneity must take these factors into account. Since this investigation is intended to be exploratory, it will be restricted to single-phase flow because of the simplification implied; both steady-state and unsteady-state behavior will be considered. The western coal industry, long overshadowed by the petroleum and metallic minerals industries, has been revitalized by several new coal mining operations, with the promise that this is only the beginning of a tremendous surge in production of coal that will carry into the next century. The content of this paper is confined to the coal fields and recent developments in eastern Montana, northeastern Wyoming and western North Dakota. The area is commonly referred to as the Powder River-Fort Union region although the Powder River Basin and the Fort Union formation are separate entities and are not coextensive. Coincidentally or otherwise, the extent of the subbituminous part of the coal region coincides approximately with the Powder River Basin. Environmental considerations together with the low sulfur content of much of the western coal have triggered demand since this coal could not compete at present with eastern and midwestern coal solely on a delivered-cost-per-million-btu basis. However, increasing costs of underground mining and the comparatively thin seams of the eastern and midwestern deposits may soon bring a balance to these costs regardless of the sulfur content. Another factor which has made western coal competitive at this time is the use of the unit-trains to significantly reduce the cost of transportation. Fast loading and unloading facilities and trains of 100 cars or more in turn-around service are the keys to success in this effort.
