The economic recovery of metals from dilute solutions has been the dream of mining engineers for many years. This subject is now receiving greater attention, particularly for copper, in view of the heightened demand for the metal and the tightening supply situation. A Copper Precipitation session, sponsored jointly by EMD Hydrometallurgy Committee and MBD, which took place during the Annual Meeting in March, heard papers on recent research and plant practice. Although the bulk of research in hydrometallurgy has been carried out in countries other than the United States1, producers in this country are making important contributions to the heap or dump leaching system. They realize that the processes are essentially simple to install and give high recovery rates at reasonable cost. Jacobi estimated in 1963 2 that the copper mining industry obtained a gross return from scavenging operations -on a worldwide basis-on the order of $20 million annually, subject to the usual deductions for refining and realization charges, overheads, taxes, etc.

IN a recently reported investigation, J. B. Clark and F. N. Rhines1 used a diffusion couple technique to determine the number of intermetallic phases which should be present in the Al-Mg equilibrium phase diagram. Their method was an application of the following generally accepted principle. If a diffusion couple made up of two metals is annealed at a given temperature for a long time, all the phases of the binary system which exist under equilibrium conditions at the diffusion temperature will form intermetallic layers. It is important that the diffusion temperature be high enough and the diffusion time be long enough to permit the nuclea-tion of all thermodynamically stable phases at the interface of the couples and their growth to observable thicknesses. These simple time-temperature criteria are at times difficult to satisfy, and it is the purpose of this note to point out a situation in which this is the case. FULLERS earth is a general name applied to claylike minerals that have high natural adsorptive powers. They are usually distinguished from ordinary clays by a higher content of combined moisture and a lower apparent density. The definition is based on the ancient use of the material for fulling, or cleansing woolen cloth of oil and grease; a more modern definition should mention the ability to decolorize oil and should differentiate between fullers earth, which is naturally active, and certain bentonites which only develop decolorizing power after being leached with strong mineral acids. The distinction between fullers earth and activable bentonite is not a sharp one, since all types of intermediate clays can be found that are more or less naturally active, yet more or less responsive to acid treatment. The differences seem to depend somewhat on the amount of leaching that has been effected by natural ground waters.

Among the bills now pending in Congress is one to authorize exploration for and disposition of coal, phosphate, sodium, oil, oil shale, and gas on, public domain. One, to provide protection and government revenue for potash and for zinc ores and products. One to prevent withdrawal of mineral lands from entry and occupancy by law, also to promote, production of quicksilver, tungsten, sulfate, pyrites, and sulfur, and of manganese and manganiferous ores. Three resolutions have been introduced to suspend requirements of annual assessment work on mining claims during year 1919 and one to relieve owners of mining claims mustered into military service.

Electrical Conductivity. - The subject of the relative conducting power of different minerals is one of minor interest.* In general most minerals, except those having a metallic luster among the sulphides and oxides, are non-conductors. Only the non-conductors can show pyro-electrical phenomena, and only the conductors can give a thermo-electric current. 437. Frictional Electricity. - The development of an electrical charge on many bodies by friction is a familiar subject. All minerals become electric by friction, although the degree to which this is manifested differs widely. There is no line of distinction among minerals, dividing them into positively electric and negatively electric; for both electrical states may be presented by different varieties of the same species, and by the same variety in different states. The gems are in general positively electric only when polished; the diamond, however, exhibits positive electricity whether polished or not. Measurments of the transient photoconductivity in fillns of amorphous selenium with blocking- contacts haue been used in studying the transport properties. The results shozu that the transport of free carviers cannot be explained in terms of a model using bulk trapping. Measurments of the photocurrent-applied field characteristic as a unction of sample thickness do not pvoduce the scaling lau,s approps-iate lo a range-limited model. THE investigation described here was undertaken to explore the mechanisms of transport in amorphous selenium films. These films are used in xerography, where a photoconductor is charged electrostatically and then exposed to light to form a latent image. The sensitivity that one can expect when operating in this mode is directly related to the transport properties of the photoconductor material. The study of photoconductivity at high fields in insulating materials is often complicated by contact effects. Injection from the contacts can easily mask the fundamental transport processes that are being studied. A technique is described in this paper that allows a study of photoconductivity and transport processes in amorphous selenium films without the complicating effects introduced by contacts. Accordingly, the samples are prepared using insulating films between the sample and the metal electrodes, where the electrodes are capacitively coupled to the surfaces of the sample under study. A transient measurement is performed with pulsed light, and the photocurrent measured near the beginning of the pulse before the field is distorted by polarization at the blocking elec- trodes. A similar method has been described by Manyl using pulsed electric fields in studying the high field transport in insulating cadmium sulfide. EXPERIMENTAL It is possible to eliminate undesirable contact effects and maintain uniform high fields across the sample by using blocking electrodes and measuring the current-field characteristic under transient conditions. The sample configuration is shown schematically in Fig. 1. Each of the gold electrodes is separated from the amorphous selenium film by a layer of insulating plastic (Formvar) approximately 2000~ thick. The electrode on the front surface is semi-transparent to allow illumination of the sample. The whole configuration is mounted on a KEL-F substrate, which is a transparent insulating plastic having a thermal expansion coefficient that allows low-temperature measurements without cracking the selenium film. Fig. 2 shows a block diagram of the measurement apparatus. Light was obtained from a 450-w Xenon arc lamp, the intensity of which was controlled by stainless-steel screen filters and monitored by a pho-tomultiplier which was calibrated periodically against a thermopile. A camera shutter operated at 1/200 sec provided the light pulse and a synchronized signal to the oscilloscope. The photocurrent transient is ob-served with a high-speed picoammeter (response time of 1 msec) the output of which is displayed on an oscilloscope. The applied voltage is constant throughout the transient measurement. The selenium films were prepared by evaporation of four 9's pure selenium shot supplied by Canadian Copper Refiners. Medellin was formerly much isolated but 19 now connected with navigation on the Magdalena River by a railway from Puerto Berrio, passing through a recently completed tunnel under the central Andes.

CHAIRMAN M. A. HUNTER. UP to this time our stress-corrosion sessions have been concerned with stress-corrosion cracking in brass. In the succeeding sessions a variety of other products which are susceptible to stress-corrosion cracking are to be considered and this afternoon's session is to be devoted to stress-corrosion cracking in light metals. The problems you have had to deal with up to now in brass have been very simple ones. From this time on the complexities become greater. You have already learned in the preceding sessions, that copper is not susceptible to stress-corrosion cracking and when you begin to alloy it with 3 per cent or larger proportions of zinc, then stress- corrosion cracking ensues. You apparently have few complications in the copper alloys you make. There is apparently no precipitation on the grain boundaries in the brass, and no precipitation within the metal itself. The selection of a shaft size for ventilation purposes is a classic problem of concern to mining engineers. This presentation is concerned with the sizing of conventionally-sunk circular shafts with concrete or shotcrete linings. Costs of sinking shafts of three different depths, from 150 m to 300 m (500 ft to 1000 ft), and six different diameters, from 4.27 m to 7.32 m (14 ft to 24 ft), were obtained through questionnaires to shaft contractors. The primary objective of the economic model presented is the balancing of detailed annual capital and operating costs to achieve the minimum overall cost of the shaft installation over its life. The economic model is similar to previous analyses but treats several of the individual cost categories in an updated fashion. Included in the paper is a detailed analysis of the effects of varying power costs on optimal shaft size. Also included are a statistical analysis of current shaft costs and comments on the choice between shotcrete and concrete linings.

The recurrence of mine-fires in Nevada during the past decade is not only a matter of interest, but also one of considerable concern to engineers and mine-managers. The more important fires may be enumerated as follows: Forman Shaft fire, Gold Hill, April 21, 1903; shaft-house, machinery, and shaft destroyed; loss estimated at $50,000; cause unknown. Union Shaft fire, Virginia City, July 14, 1904; shaft-house, machinery,and shaft in part destroyed; loss estimated at $100,-000; cause of fire stated as the careless throwing of a match in the rope-house. Sutro Tunnel fire, Virginia City, Jan. 27, 1909; 700 ft. of tunnel-timbering destroyed, and direct damage of $10,000; cause " probably electric wires." Belcher Shaft fire, Gold Hill, Aug. 9, 1910; shaft-house destroyed, machinery ruined, and upper part of shaft damaged; damage, $25,000; no cause given. Belmont Mine fire, Tonopah, Feb. 23, 1911; fire started ill winze; 17 men killed. * Phosphate from the Maiden Rock deposits in the Missouri River Basin, Mont., are to be developed by the Victor Chemical Works of Chicago. A $5 million plant for processing the rock into elemental phosphorus is to be constructed in the vicinity of Butte. The plant will receive power from the Bonneville Power Administration. * Tests are being made to determine whether iron pellets from taconite concentrates will boost blast furnace and open hearth output at the Campbell Works of the Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. About 35,000 tons of iron pellets have been shipped from Minnesota for this purpose.

The peninsula of Florida is remarkable for the uniform character and simplicity of its geological structure. Major Henry Whiting, of the U. S. Army, was one of the first to give an account of the physical features and rocks of Florida, in an article published in 1839, in the American Journal of Science (vol. xxxv., p. 47). He says: " The rocks found in situ are all calcareous, though siliceous boulders are occasionally seen, and nodules of hornstone are here and there mingled with the limestone, which elicit sparks and are sometimes used by the Indians for flints."

A CHARACTERISTIC, and, to Americans, an amusing discussion of the three-high rail-mill, arose out of the reading of Mr. Lauth's paper on three-high plate-mills, at the Glasgow meeting of the Iron and Steel Institute.
