The glass industry is a major user of many industrial minerals in the manufacture of its product. It is the intent of this chapter to: (1) acquaint the reader with the glass industry by including a few production statistics, and then (2) cover the various aspects of the major raw materials used to make glass. Some of the items covered are: type of materials, their function in glass, their composition, cost, and the relative quantity used in glass vs. totals produced. In addition, a discussion of glass raw material specifications, some byproduct materials used in glassmaking, and comments on future prospects related to the environment, technology, and growth are included. The matter of glass compositions, properties, and batches is considered beyond the scope of this chapter which deals only with raw materials. For more details on the particular minerals and rocks, the reader is referred to the commodity chapters in this book.

A technique is described by which metastable alloy phases can be obtained by very rapid cooling from the liquid state. The results obtained so far have lead to; 1) extension of solubility limits beyond their equilibrium values, 2) new phases not found under equilibrium conditions, and 3) amorphous alloys. MANY new nonequilibrium phases have been found in alloys rapidly cooled from the liquid state. The technique used in these investigations essentially consisted of propelling a small molten globule of an alloy against the inside surface of a rotating copper cylinder. Since these original experiments were performed, the technique has been greatly improved. The purpose of this paper is to describe in detail, for the first time, a simple and efficient apparatus for producing foils of alloys which are rapidly cooled from the melt and to summarize some of the observations made on these alloys. I) FAST COOLING APPARATUS In the original fast cooling apparatus used by Duwez, Willens, and Klement,' the alloy was melted in a graphite container having the shape shown schematically in Fig. 1. A shock tube was attached to one end of the graphite part to supply the pressure for ejecting the molten globule. The globule was received on the inside of a rotating cylinder located about 0.5 in. from the exit of the graphite container. In 1899, Lebeau1 reported the preparation of the compound Lis As through reduction of lithium arse-nate with carbon. Brauer and zint12 have described the preparation of Li3 As by combining the elements in liquefied ammonia and by melting the elements in a zirconia crucible coated with lithium fluoride. In 1953, at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, LisAs and a previously unreported compound, LiAs, were prepared by the reaction of the elements. IN processing magnetic taconites several steps of crushing, grinding, classification, and magnetic separation are required to produce a 60' pct Fe concentrate. Usually the final concentrate is in a slurry form of 55 to 70 pct solids by weight and is further characterized by a particle size of 60+ pct —325 mesh. In taconite plants already completed or under construction the conventional method used to obtain pellets suitable for blast furnaces is to filter the concentrate slurry, ball the filter cake, and then harden the green pellets in a traveling grate or in a vertical shaft furnace. Large tonnages must be handled in minimum floor space, with reduced maintenance and lowest possible operating cost. Filtration must therefore achieve two objectives: I) high filtration rate—in terms of pounds of dry solids per hour per square foot of filtration area—at a low filtrate solids concentration, and 2) a filter cake moisture that will always permit efficient balling within the normal fluctuations of ' plant operating conditions. If moisture contents are too high, balling may be impossible or result in a mushy ball .without enough green strength for the firing operation. Development work has met these objectives. At low investment and operating costs, filtration rates of 250 to 600 dry lb per hr per ft2 have been attained for concentrates of 60' pct —325 mesh. By combining the disk-type continuous filter with proper agitation, the Agidisc filter produces a homogeneous filter cake, easily discharged from the disk sectors. This application provides the lowest initial cost per square foot of filtration area, minimizes floor space, reduces down time for changing filter media to a negligible factor, and simplifies process control and maintenance for the operator. It is now possible to predict very closely the taconite concentrate filtration rates for a wide variety of conditions—either by experience or with a few simple leaf tests. When balling and pelletizing operations began on a continuous basis, it became apparent that moisture content of the filter cake was a critical factor and must always be controlled by the filter operator below some maximum allowable value. Accordingly the Reserve Mining Co. and the Eimco Corp. joined in a study of the many variables affecting filter cake moisture content. The study was conducted at the Reserve Mining Co. taconite plant at Babbitt, Minn. To process plant tonnage the Babbitt plant utilizes a 6-ft diam Agidisc filter with six disks and an 8-ft diam drum filter with 10-ft face. However, most of the plant filter investigations were made on the Agidisc because of its superior performance. A considerable amount of small-scale test work was first carried out to study more closely the individual variables and ascertain their effect on filter cake moisture content. A general correlation method was then developed which allowed reasonable prediction of moisture content at any operating conditions. This step was made necessary by the fact that in full-scale filtering, operating variables usually interact to produce a combined rather than a singular effect. Studies were then made on the full-scale filters to prove the validity of the correlations developed, and past operating records were examined to ascertain whether or not significant variations could be traced to any single factor or to a combination of factors.

A procedure whereby the completeness of search is calculated by using the area of influence of exploratory drill holes or samples is extended to allow for errors of recognition. The size, shape, and orientation of potential targets are mapped in a probabilistic sense on the array of drill holes or samples. The method can be used either to determine how well explored are the subregions within a previously drilled or sampled area, or to test proposed alternative search strategies. Examples of the use of the method demonstrate the complexity of sequential search when the areas of influence of drill holes or samples overlap.

The activity of aluminum in liquid Al-Fe alloys .has been measured by an improved version of the transportation method in which the metallic vapor has been collected by its solution in a metallic condenser. The results can be represented by the equation: log yAl = -3.0(1 - xAl2) (0.6 < XAl < 1.0) This equation applies at 1315°C. MORRIS and zellarsl adapted the transportation method for measuring the vapor pressure of a com- ponent of an alloy at high temperature. We have modified their technique further2 for use with metals that are strong oxide formers. In the present case the method has been applied to the Al- Fe system to obtain the activity of aluminum in the liquid region at 1315°C. Dried ultrahigh-purity hydrogen (Matheson) is the carrier gas. The operations, Fig. 1, of deoxidizing the gas, equilibrating the gas with the sample at 1315";, and then collecting the aluminum vapor are all accomplished within a single, continuous alumina tube to avoid contamination of the system by leaks. De-oxidation to a very low level of PO2 (<10-25 atm) is Obtained by passing the hydrogen through a tightly packed bed of aluminum powder. Experimental results are given for the rate 0.f solution of nitrogen in y iron in the temperature range 1000° to 1200°C. It is shown that, when purified reacting gas is used, the rate-controlling process is the diffusion of nitrogen into the iron. The difhsiuity of nitrogen in y iron is calculated from the results and the equation logD = —(8800/T) — 0.04 is recommended to represent the temperature dependence of the diffusivity. In some experiments using unpurified nitrogen, solution rates are found to be slower than those attributable to a solely solid-state diffusion process. Indications are that in the presence of impurities in the gas, e.g., H,O, chemisorption of nitrogen at the surface is hindered and becomes a rate-controlling process for the transfer of nitrogen across the gas -metal interface. ALTHOUGH the solubility of nitrogen in y iron at known nitrogen activities has been well-established,&apos;-a the kinetics of the solution of nitrogen in iron are not known. The work of Darken, Smith, and Filer&apos; indicates that at temperatures below about 1300°C the rate of solution of nitrogen in y iron is controlled by a chemical reaction at the metal surface, while at temperatures above about 1300°C the rate-controlling process is the diffusion of nitrogen in the metal. Fast and verrijps studied the denitro-genization of y iron using wet hydrogen at 950°C and their results clearly indicate that the rate of nitrogen removal is controlled by diffusion of nitrogen in the metal. In Part I of this series of papers, the kinetics of the solution of nitrogen in y iron are discussed in the light of the present experimental work. EXPERIMENTAL Apparatus. The reaction chamber consisted of a platinum wire-wound resistance furnace with a re-crystallized alumina reaction tube. The temoerature of the furnace, which was automatically controlled to approximately 1°C, was measured with a Pt/Pt-13 pct Rh thermocouple and a potentiometer. The temperature distribution in the working zone of the furnace was determined using a calibrated Pt/Pt-13 pct Rh thermocouple and the hot zone was found to be approximately 3 in. long with a temperature variation of * 3°C. A series of experiments was also carried out at 1000°C and pressures above atmospheric using a pressure vessel which was similar in construction to that described elsewhere.1° Materials. Both history and physical examination are unreliable in the diagnosis of silicosis. In some studies 25 per cent of individuals with silicosis have been found to have no symptoms whatever. The positive physical findings that may be produced by this disease include diminished chest expansion, diminished lung resonance, distant and harsh breath sounds. However, many workmen of a short stocky type have diminished chest expansion without any lung disease. In a study of rockdrillers made by the author more than half of the men without silicosis were limited in chest expansion to 2 in. or less instead of the "normal" 6. In a study of stonecutters the average chest expansion in the negative group was found to be only 2.4 inches. Changes found upon physical examination of the lungs themselves are so inconstant as to be of little diagnostic value. In the studies of rockdrillers and stonecutters already referred to, approximately 25 per cent of those with advanced silicosis apparently had normal lungs. The usual functional tests of lung performance are likewise of little value because of marked individual variation. Average vital capacity will be reduced in a group of silicotics below what might be expected in a group of normals, but certain individuals of the former group may have an entirely vital capacity, giving no indication of the underlying presence of silicosis. It follows that the X-ray examination is absolutely indispensable in the diagnosis of this disease. X-ray findings characteristic of silicosis have been described innumerable times. They consist essentially of a mottling of the lung fields due to the presence of fibrous nodules which develop as a reaction to the presence of the irritant silica.

A silicon solid-state array image scanner is described. This paper deals with structural and performance properties of the array which basically consists of PIN photo and gating diodes, and low capacitance isolation diodes. Each chip of the array is composed of an 8 by 9 matrix of photo detector cells; each cell contains one each of the three diode types mentioned. This x-y matrix is read a column at a time with an access delay of approximately 100 nsec per column. It is designed to detect the presence or absence of illumination within 10-mil diam image spots located on a 15- by 15-mil grid. Radiant power level of an illuminated spot is low; of interest is the range around I uw with a of 8400g Structural improvements to the original array which will result THE purpose of this paper is to describe the results of a solid state scanner exploratory development activity. The scanner is intended to sense the presence or absence of low-level illumination falling upon a matrix of 10-mil wide squares arranged on a 15- by 15-mil x-y grid pattern. The light of interest has a wavelength of 8400, characteristic of radiation emitted from a GaAs lasing diode. This wavelength matches well the spectral absorption of silicon,&apos; thus the well-developed silicon processing technology can be applied to fabricating large integrated arrays of PIN photocells to sense the radiation. The illumination state of the cells of the array is read, one column at a time, by addressing a drive line of the particular column in question and examining the state of those sense lines which are orthogonal to the drive Lines of in greater sensitivity at various wavelengths, both above and below 8400Å, and in greater speed are presented. These include variations in diffusion depth, resistivity of N and P regions, isolation techniques, and packaging. Trade-offs between access speed, cycle frequency, and sensitivity are discussed. A packaging approach to achieving an array composed of several chips is described. Requirements on this package are: 1) maintenance of 15- by 15-mil pitch of the light sensitive cell position, therefore positional accuracy of mounted 8 by 9 cell photo detector chips; 2) maintenance of inherent high array speed even though signal levels are low through high density close proximity mounting of monolithic sense amplifier circuitry. the array. One bank of N sense amplifiers is required, where N is the number of photodiode cells in each column of the array. CELL AND CHI" STRUCTURE A photograph of a single monolithic cell is shown in Fig. 1. Each cell is composed of three junctions, an isolation junction, a logic or blocking diode junction, and a photodiode junction; all of these junctions are connected electrically by a common N region. Interest naturally attaches to fissuring and subsidence of the earth&apos;s surface, whatever the cause may be, and the induced movement and fissuring of the impervious strata overlying an oil sand is of even greater practical importance because of its bearing upon the recoverability of the portion of the oil not already extracted or extractable by ordinary production methods. It is probably true that significant ground movement induced by oil production occurs only in oil fields in relatively young formations, where the oil comes from incoherent or only slightly cemented sands and oil-soaked clays, but inasmuch as a great proportion of our "gusher" wells produce from "running" sands and yield a large part of the total oil output, it seems worth while to make an effort to inspire the collection and recording of data indicating the nature and magnitude of oil-field subsidence, both surface and subsurface. Goose Creek Field The single known instance in which the nature and magnitude of the surface subsidence incident to petroleum withdrawal has been accurately ascertained is that in the Goose Creek oil field of Texas, described by Pratt and Johnson.&apos; There subsidence caused the submergence of a considerable area within the oil field, and, because the title to the naturally submerged lands of Texas rests in the State, it became necessary to determine whether the submergence was due to natural or artificial causes. A detailed study revealed that the sunken area conformed very closely to the limits of the productive oil field and that the cumulative depression over an eight-year period ranged from zero at the margin to 3.25 ft. at the center. This depression was accompanied by the development of local marginal surface fractures along which the subsiding ares

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers extends an invitation to members of the Institute to participate in an exceedingly interesting excursion on Saturday, November 11. Permission has been secured for a visit to the plant of the Electric Boat Co. at New London, Conn. There will be run a special-test on a high-power 8-cylinder, 4-cycle Diesel engine. A large number of submarine and other engines in various stages of construction will be seen, also the boring of torpedo tubes, cylinders and other equipment for submarines. The drafting rooms and foundry mill also be open for inspection. The party will have an opportunity to see at close range the submerging of several submarines, and an attack on a vessel on the surface, an exhibit which is being arranged by courtesy of Rear Admiral A. W. Grant, who is in command of the submarine forces of the United States. The Boston members will leave South Station on train No. 7 at 8.30 A. M. Those from Providence will board this train at 9.36 A. M. The Worcester members will leave on train No. 745 at 8.36 A. M. The New York contingent will leave the Grand Central Terminal at 8.31 A. "The Southern Cross mining district was discovered during the early rush of gold seekers over Montana following the discovery of gold in 1861. Placers were worked near the Atlantic Cable mine in 1866, and soon attention was turned to quartz lode mining. High grade ores were discovered in the North Atlantic claim, adjoining the present Southern Cross group. The early metallurgical treat¬ment of these ores was by means of arrastres, a crude form of amalgamating mill, illustrated on the page opposite. This old arrastre located by the roadside on Warm Springs creek, was built by Barker Bros. in 1879. Further discoveries overtaxed the capacity of this plant, and in 1875 Thomas' Stuart employed a contractor named Jeptha J. Corner to convert the old Wilson & Fifer sawmill located at the Big Spring into an up-to-date gold quartz mill. 'For this trans¬formation Corner received the sum of $1,400.00. The illustrations give a good idea of the nature of its construction. Practically no iron was used in the mill, excepting for the stamps, dies and cams and cam shafts. Whether or not the saving attained reached the limits of present day perfection is not known. There being no steam boilers available, the early prospectors believed in the principle of conservation of fire wood, water power was therefore used, generated by a ""direct-connected"" over-shot wheel. Water for power purposes was supplied by the nearby spring. History fails to record the tonnage treated in this relic of early Montana milling practice.The ores of the Southern Cross district have not proved readily amenable to mill treatment, but being largely composed of iron oxides, they are most desirable fluxing ores for smelter operations. The B. A. & P. Ry. extends into the district. Electric power is furnished by the Flint Creek 'station, three miles distant."

A study has hem made of the formation of annealing textures in an 18-8 austenitic stainless steel (Type 304L) from various deformation textures obtained by rolling at different temperatures. When the deformation texture is a mixture of the ferritic type and the brass type owing to the pres -ence of both martensitic ferrite and retained aus-tenite in the specimen, recrystallization takes place by the growth of the existing austenite phase. In a previous report,&apos; it was shown that the rolling texture of austenitic stainless steel (Type 304L) changed gradually from the brass type to the copper type with increasing temperature of deformation above 200°C. These changes are similar to those in high-purity silver2,3 and electrolytic copper;4 a brass-type texture is favored at low rolling temperatures, whereas a copper-type texture is favored During the course of rolling -texture transition from the brass type to the copper type, the subsequent recrystallization textures change accordingly. The orientation relationship between the annealing textures and the various rolling textures, being consistent with previous observations on various fcc metals, can be described as [Ill] rotations of approximately 25 to 40 deg. Carhide precipitation may influence the annealing textures. at high rolling temperatures. Furthermore, the annealing textures in high-purity silver5 and electrolytic copper4 were found to depend entirely on the prior deformation texture. From a copper-type rolling texture a strong cube texture will form upon recrystallization, whereas from a brass-type rolling texture the annealing texture will be quite different from the cube orientation. In an earlier comm~nication,6 the formation of a strong cube texture in 18-8 austenite stainless steels (Types 304 and 304L) was reported briefly by the authors.
