A stope and pillar method is used to mine the gently-dipping uranium bearing reefs, to a depth of 1000 m, at Elliot Lake, Ontario. A few isolated rockbursts have been reported in the 11 mines in the area during the first twenty-five years of operation. However, in March 1982 a series of rockbursts were initiated in the old mined-out workings at the Quirke Mine of Rio Algom Ltd. Detailed records of pillar deterioration and size of the affected area were kept both prior and subsequent to the occurrence. Seismic instrumentation was installed before and convergence stations shortly after the start of bursting. Observations indicate that the squat pillars failed violently where- as the slender pillars exhibit a less violent failure mechanism. Floor cracks and heaving are common, but the massive quartzite hanging wall strata is relatively undamaged although some roof falls have occurred due to local structure. The microseismic system accurately locates seismic events to f 20 m within the geophone array and it has been found that an accelerating convergence rate coincides with and in some cases precedes an increase in seismic activity. Displacement discontinuity and boundary element computer models have been used to estimate pillar stresses and areas of high stress concentration in an effort to determine the causes of rockbursts. Mine and pillar stiffness and energy balance concepts are used to explain cases of gradual and sudden pillar failures at Quirke Mine.

FIG. 1 shows a volute aging break which developed spontaneously in a hardened and tempered steel helmet between 19 and 38 days after it had been tested ballistically. A similar break, shown in Fig. 2, developed spontaneously in a similar helmet about 40 days after the ballistic testing. In this case the rupture occurred abruptly and with a loud report. FIG. 2. two, in that it is an approximation to two parallel volutes centered at the point of impact of the projectile, just below D. Several weeks later, after the photograph for Fig. 1 was taken, a similar doubling of the volute crack occurred in this helmet, starting from the end of the eyelash crack near A and spreading thence to the left contra-clockwise for about ½ in. The negatives from which these pictures are made have not been touched up in any way, save writing the letters on them. LARGE copper whiskers were grown from cuprous iodide by reduction with hydrogen at about 500°C. Carefully selected single-crystal whiskers of [loo], [110], and [Ill] orientations were used and the whisker shapes and cross sections are shown in Fig. 1. Spec-trographic analysis of a typical batch of whiskers showed that the composition was better than 99.9 pct with iron and silicon as the major impurities. The test specimens varied from about 70 to 400 u in diam and they did not show a conspicuous yield drop as observed in very fine whiskers (diam <25 u), tested by Brenner.1 The characteristics of the stress-strain curves were similar to those of bulk single crystals, even though the maximum flow stresses reached in some orientations were comparable to the yield stresses observed in fine whiskers. Mechanical properties of whiskers of different materials and copper whiskers up to about 100 u in diam have been reviewed,&apos; and a mechanism of slip band propagation in fine whiskers has been recently suggested.3 Whiskers in this work were tested in a floor-model Instron testing machine using low strain rates. Many of those who attended the meeting at Chicago spent the first part of the following week in Pittsburgh, when the Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines was dedicated and the fourth annual First Aid and Mine Rescue Contests were, held. The Bureau buildings were open for inspection during the three days, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. The dedicatory ceremonies were held in the Bureau of Mines main building, Monday morning, Sept. 29, Mr. T. J. Gillespie, representing the Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce, presiding. In his address of welcome, Hon. E. V. Babcock, Mayor of Pittsburgh, said: "The reclamation work already done stands out conspicuously beneficial to industry and populace alike all over the United States. It has demonstrated methods of preservation of life and reclaiming of injured persons which are new and greatly beneficial to modern civiliza-tion. The establishment of this institution in Pittsburgh was greatly desired, and now it is here it is greatly appreciated." The response was given by First-Assistant Secretary of the Interior Vogelsang, who represented Secretary Franklin K. Lane. He said that the Bureau of Mines did more during the war for the triumph of American arms than any other institution.

Twelve years ago, some coal-mine operators, mining engineers, oil and gas operators, Bureau of Mines engineers, geologists and state mine inspectors met in Pittsburgh, Pa. to discuss and solve if possible, the problems in connection with the drilling of oil and gas wells through or near coal mines and through the future coal reserves. Regulations were drafted and presented by O. P. Hood and A. G. Heggem of the Bureau of Mines.&apos; . There was considerable discussion of the various articles, practically all of which appear in Bulletin 65, but the interest aroused at that meeting was short lived. Practically none of the important coal-producing states gave the matter the consideration it should have received. Notwithstanding the marked progress in safety work, coal mines still have an unenviable reputation for mine explosions. Our mining laws have become stricter and the enforcement, especially in Pennsylvania, more rigid, but what good will come from a rigid enforcement of the mining laws if some source of danger exists all around the mines, over which the operators have no control ? It is hardly necessary to recite all the cases of natural-gas explosions published in Bulletin 65, but with some of them I am especially familiar. In 1912, while visiting the Miners&apos; Hospital, at Fairmont, W. Va., my attention was called to a patient swathed in in bandages so that no part of his face and hands were visible. He had not been told that his two sons, mere boys, had died of the burns they had received in the same accident—explosion due to natural gas leaking into a country mine at Peora, Harrison Co., W. Va.

It is estimated conservatively that some 14 billion tonnes of coal reserves in the United States exist in beds considered steeply dipping, i.e. at pitches or slopes in excess of 15O - a slope too steep for practical use of mobile wheel or crawler drive mining equipment. Past attempts to mine these steep reserves are limited owing to production difficulties and high costs, an expected result when mining of slopes must be done conventionally and mining on strike with mobile mining equipment is restricted because of limited cross sectional opening and operating room. In Europe, these adverse conditions are countered through the use of the longwall mining method. In fact, longwall mining is employed along pitches up to 55°. However, both operating and administrative - conditions in foreign steep seam coal mines differ from ours in that (1) the mine does not necessarily have to make a profit and (2) single entry development of retreat mining panels is acceptable practice. In the United States development can be done with a minimum of two entries only, provided belt haulage is not used during development.

The geological and geochemical characteristics of the Japanese iodine-rich brines are outlined. The iodine-rich brine in Japan is primary in its origin and its occurrence is limited in the younger marine sediments. The iodine-rich subsurface water is saturated or over- saturated by natural gas, but the water saturated by natural gas is not always rich in iodine. The iodide and bromide contents decrease with time. The bromide content decreases much more rapidly than that of iodide. It should be emphasized that the genetic environment of the Japanese type of dissolved gas and iodine deposit is not peculiar to the Japanese islands.

The kinetics of vacuum distillation, vacuum-melt surface reactions, crucible-melt surface reactions and boiling are analytically investigated. No disagreement with experiment is obtained upon applying a rigid flow model to describe the behavior of the melt in the vicinity of reaction surfaces. The theory focuses attention upon measureable parameters rather than upon the adjustable parameter, stagnant layer thickness, associated with other theories. The rigid flow theory is thus capable of quantitative evaluation and experiments to achieve this evaluation are suggested. KINETICS, rather than thermodynamics, often determine the degree of refinement achieved in vacuum melting. There is little understanding, however, of the kinetic principles involved in vacuum refining. This paper represents an attempt to achieve this understanding. There are two reactions which need to be con- sidered. The first is the refining reaction. The second shall be called the polluting reaction. It is the reaction associated with the introduction of components of the crucible into the melt. The mechanisms of both reactions are unknown. Many models can be constructed to describe either the refining or polluting reactions. For example, consider the refining reaction C + Q = CO(g). One model that can be imagined is that the carbon and oxygen combine in the melt to form CO which then diffuses to a melt-

The adsorption of uranium onto Wyoming bentonite was measured in carbonate media over the pH range 8 to 11. Uranium was removed from solution onto the solids by a rapid reaction, proposed to be adsorption of the anionic uranyl tricarbonato complex onto edges of the clay platelets, and a slow reaction that may be precipitation of a hydroxide. The changes in uranium content of the aqueous and solid phases of a uranium ore carbonate leach slurry were also measured as the slurry was progressively diluted. There was an increase in the uranium content of the solids as the pH of the suspension was lowered, as observed with the Wyoming bentonite. Results indicate the conditions that should be met with respect to pH control to prevent the problem of excessive uranium adsorption in the counter-current decantation washing circuit of a conventional leaching process, as well as in the leaching and restoration phases of carbonate solution mining.

At Asarco&apos;s Mission mill. located near Sahuarita, Ariz., the 20 500-t/d (22,500-stpd) throughput of highly abrasive and corrosive copper ore can play havoc on equipment wear parts. To minimize frequent replacement work and extend life on key components, Asarco engineers have over the past five years utilized liners made of "Towniprene" in the secondary grinding and flotation area of the plant. Results to date have indicated that these liners last between three and five times longer than those made of metal or ordinary rubber.

MCMORRIS III INTRODUCTION In the early days of coarse-coal treatment by the dense-medium process in Europe, loess was one of the materials used for medium solids. Newly developed cyclones were used to reclaim and thicken the loess suspension. On occasion, when the cyclone thickener at the Maurits mine in the Nether- lands plugged, the overflow was found to be filled with clean coal free of impurity. From this observation stemmed the concept of the cyclone as a cleaning device. Development took place during World War I1 in the lab- oratory of the Dutch State Mines under the direction of M. G. Driessen. A 15 tph (13.6 mt) pilot plant was in operation in the laboratory by 1945, when, in September, Driessen made the first public disclosure of the process in a paper presented to the Institute of fie1 in London. Epitomized, there have been no innovations recently in crushing, but in grinding the trend has been towards larger units under more automatic control with an increased use of autogenous grinding. Crushing Portability of primary crushers to "follow the face" reduces material handling costs. The top size of crusher feed still establishes the size of the crusher; the feed opening should be 1 1/2 times the size of the largest feed. The maximum size of crusher product is 1 ½ times the open scale setting of a jaw or gyratory crusher. Practice dictates use of scalping screens ahead of any type of crusher when the feed contains 25% or more of product size. If required capacity is under 600-700 tph economics favor a double toggle crusher or an impactor. For larger capacities the gyratory crusher is favored.

A novel process is proposed for continuous removal of ash and unreacted solids which become suspended in the oils obtained during coal liquefaction. The proposed method uses water in direct contact with the oil under conditions which cause the suspended residue solids to transfer from the oil to the water phase. Separation of the phases yields a product oil essentially free of suspended solids. The water is cooled, clarified or filtered by conventional low-cost systems, and recirculated. The paper describes experimental work leading to development of the novel concept and includes the result of batch experiments that establish the feasibility of the process.

SEVERAL new procedures for completing oil wells have been developed in recent years. Each method when used where properly applicable promises to be a definite aid to operators in lowering development or operating costs, or in developing the full potentialities of the oil well. Multiple-zone completions are now frequently used, in contrast to the older practice of setting a solid water string over each zone to be produced. Gravel packing in unconsolidated formations often prevents sand troubles formerly experienced where a conventional perforated liner was used. Light-weight bentonitic clay muds and oil-base drilling fluids are definite steps toward eliminating mudding damage, which occurs when heavy rotary mud is used. Since in each case the new procedure developed is an alternate of older conventional methods, a problem of selection is presented. The purpose of this paper is to suggest methods of arriving at these choices and to present practical observations that may be of aid in their application.

Over a period of years the Crestmore plant of the Riverside Cement Co. has been supplied with limestone from the Chino limestone bed. The limestone bed dips about 40º and extends 1500 ft along the strike. Thickness of the bed is such that horizontal distance from footwall to hanging wall varies from 400 to 1200 ft. When the new room and pillar mining system was instituted the haulage units used for development were model C Tournarockers. Four of these diesel units were purchased with the idea of using them solely for development work since it was realized that they would have to be supplemented by additional, and perhaps larger haulers.
