A mined-out stope being backfilled with classified mill tailings was continuously monitored, both upstream and downstream, to determine the radon concentration associated with the mill tailings. The radon monitoring was done before, during, and after the backfill operation. Data taken during weekends when no mining activities were influencing the radon concentration showed a 90 percent reduction in radon discharge from the stope after being backfilled. Water used to mix with the classified sands showed an increase in the heavy metals concentration immediately after seeping from the inplace sand. However, the water used in backfilling is less than ½ of 1 percent of total mine water discharged. The change in contamination is not measurable at the pumping station.

Andres (The Technion, Haifa, Israel)-The authors are to be congratulated on their research, new and interesting, in a field which, however, the present writer and his assistants have been trying since 1962 to bring to the attention of the scientific and technical world, by means of publications covering several different aspects of this many-sided problem. We announced, in these publications, the results of magneto-hydrostatic (MHD) separation of magnetic and nonmagnetic minerals which we made in magnetic fluids (in paramagnetic solutions and suspensions of magnetic particles) which interact with permanent" and impermanent" inhomogeneous magnetic fields. There is no doubt that the authors have succeeded in creating ferrimagnetic colloids made by dispergation of 10-30 wt % of magnetite in kerosene in the presence of 7-10 vl % oleic acid. It may be judged by [Figs. 3 and 4] that the suspensions represent great stability systems and also "hysteresisless" fluids [(Fig. 5)] which bear witness to the existence of superparamagnetic suspensions. If the viscosity of these colloids is not so high, and the cost of preparing them can be covered, the fluids which have here been received can possibly be of interest to the technology of mineral separation. The potential possibility and technological perspective of similar media is demonstrated in our joint work with G. Bunin18 in 1965. The research carried out on the pushing out of cylinders and spheres from magnetic fluid is impressive; it would, however, have been interesting if the authors had compared their results with those on the pushing out of bodies from magnetic fluids adduced from our work." In my books" there happens to be described an experiment on the pushing out of a sphere in magnetic wedge field, in which the pushing out force of suspension with 5 vl % of magnetite reached 125 g per cc. This testifies to interesting possibilities of these media. Our works' shows also, on the basis of Laplace's equation the receiving of an interesting distribution of pushing out forces by selection of corresponding configurations of magnetic poles. Objection must be made to the authors' introduction of the term "antigravity force." The direction of this force does not depend on the direction of the gravity force and their opposition, i.e., antigravity is only one particular case. I am in full agreement with the authors' statement that magnetic pushing out forces "can be utilized to separate nonmagnetic objects according to variations in their densities." It is, however, necessary to make only one important addition, which can be found in our research on MHS at the Technion in Haifa, namely, that magnetic fluids in magnetic fields can be utilized in the separation of minerals according to variations in their magnetic susceptibility. The authors' conclusion is especially important considering the fact that in our publications" (including one in English") some designs of MHS separators and some technological results received on MHS-separators have already been described. Reimers (Authors' Reply)We were aware (mostly through Chemical Abstracts of the American Chemical Society) of the use of solutions of paramagnetic salts such as manganous sulfate in agnetohydrodynamic separations by the Russian school headed by G. Bunin."n Professor Andres' contributions to this school are also evident in his application of the ponderomotive forces in an electrolyte placed in electric and magnetic cross-fields to separate coal and other useful minerals." It must be realized, however, that the foregoing research by Bunin et al." involved the use of magnetic fields and field gradients of very large magnitudes, i.e., such that H • grad H - 101 Oe2 per cm. The magnetization of paramagnetic salt solutions range from 0.1 to 0.5 gauss (at fields of a few thousand Oersteds) and never reach saturation. The magnetization of our superparamagnetic ferrofluids ranges from 100 to 500 gauss and reach saturation at fields of a few hundred Oersteds. Hence, to effect the same separation, the quantity "H

Last year's review was characterized as a year of politics and began an era of legislation. The 1972 review can be similarly characterized, with even more rigid health and safety regulations and environmental legislation. The mining industry should be aware of what's happening in the nuclear power and other fields as a result of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) of 1969, where the environmental impact of most major construction activities are already under close scrutiny. Section 102 of NEPA requires that all federal agencies include a detailed statement on specified environmental conditions as part of every report on proposed actions significantly affecting the quality of the human environment. All such environmental reports must consider the same general conditions: • The environmental impact of the proposed action. • Any adverse environmental effects which cannot be avoided should the proposal be implemented. • Alternatives to the proposed action. • The relationship between local short-term uses of man's environment and the maintenance and enhancement of long-term productivity. • Any irreversible and irretrievable commitments of resources which would be involved in the proposed action should it be implemented.

Production of crude oil in Tennessee during 1943 was approximately 8200 bbl., slightly less than the 1942 production, Counties. Some half dozen wells in Clay, Fentress, and Pickett Counties, pumped intermittently, produced about 1000 barrels. Natural gas was marketed from wells in Morgan and Fentress Counties for consumption in the Sunbright and Jamestown areas, respectively. The Morgan County production was about I0,000,000 cu. ft. and approximately 8,000,000 cu. ft. was produced from the Jamestown gas field from six wells. The production of oil by counties is shown in Table I. Thirteen wells were spudded during the year; three were drilling on Dec. I, 1943. Of the nine completions, representing 10,488 ft. of hole, three were gas' wells of commercial size although only one of them has been placed on the line. The completions are listed in Table 2. Is my paper on Mexican weights and measures, presented at the Bethlehem meeting, I gave a formula for the reduction of Mexican ounces per carga to American ounces per ton, which may prove misleading. I wish therefore to substitute the following rule: To reduce Mexican ounces per carga of 300 Mexican pounds to Troy ounces per ton of 2000 pounds avoirdupois, multiply the number of ounces per carga by 6.078. Or, to reduce Troy ounces per ton of 2000 pounds avoirdupois to Mexican ounces per carga of 300 Mexican pounds, multiply the number of Troy ounces per ton by 0.165.

The use of portable radon detectors has become routine in reconnaissance uranium surveys where water and sediment samples are analyzed in field labs for radon and radium, and in detailed work where drill hole locations are pinpointed by field determinations of radon in soil gas from shallow holes. During the drilling program itself, however, very few operators are taking advantage of radon and radium analyses to decide whether a barren drill hole was a near miss or whether the immediate area can be written off. The technique is effective both above and below the water table.

An interesting new flotation technique which reportedly improves mineral recovery over an extended particle size range-from 3 mm to 5 microns and below-has been developed by the Institute of Physical Chemistry, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Designated the "static" flotation technique, it is suited for upgrading tin, molybdenum, tungsten, uranium, gold, copper, lead, zinc, and other metallic ores. Recoverable nonmetallics include feldspar, sulfur, and phosphorite. Characteristic of the static flotation process are: •longer contact period (up to 1000 times longer between particles and bubbles, •low collision velocity and inertial forces between the contact and aeration in a thin pulp layer, • aeration without the harmful hydrodynamic repulsion upon particles below 5 microns (the pulp layer is only a few millimeters thick and rising bubbles collide with the particles either directly or in the thin foam films formed), •option to conduct the process with or without froth by film flotation at equilibrium contact angles, and • the use of inexpensive frothers and/or unstable froth with separate regulations of froth stability by hydrodynamic, ultrasonic, or electrostatic means.

BRADLEY STOUGHTON, New York, N. Y.:-I would like to ask Mr. Krejci whether they have tried mixing coke dust with the lime in those converters and, if so, if any advantage has been found. It has been a very great advantage in the steel converters where coke dust has been mixed with the lime near the tuyeres. Of course the agent that causes the corrosion at that point is oxide of iron, and coke seems to prevent the formation of the oxide of iron and so protect the tuyeres. It would be interesting to know if it had the same effect in the copper converters. MILO W. KREJCI:-We have never tried it here. At Anaconda the tuyere section was formerly put in by mixing magnesite with tar and ramming that into the tuyere section, but they have abandoned that. Might I ask how you would apply the coke dust? How get it into the tuyere section ? How hold it there ? BRADLEY STOUGHTON :-The coke dust is mixed with silica and clay and then rammed in and burned. I suppose in your converters it would be mixed with the magnetite or magnesite and then agglomerated with the material in place. MILO W. KREJCI:-We never tried it here. PROF. JOSEPH W. RICHARDS, South Bethlehem, Pa.:-I would like to ask how thick this deposit of magnetite is on the lining. How thick a layer would be practical ? MILO W. KREJCI:-About 21 in. would be sufficient. I am interested in the mining of magnetite, but was not aware that it had been used at all' by the copper metallurgists.

For a period of several years, and in a large number of oases, the Metallurgical Laboratories of the New Mexico School of Mines were employed in umpire work. During this time many important local problems mere solved. Against the results of careful chemical analyses of ores, assay-returns mere often checked. In many cases the assay-methods of mine and custom-smelter were compared, and both often found faulty for the ore concerned. A wide range of ores was covered. Many of the chemical analyses and assays were made by Dr. F. C. Lincoln, Professor of Metallurgy, now of the Montana State School of Mines. A varied series of instructive assays was prepared by Prof. R. B. Brinsmade, now of the West Virginia State University. Single assays and given series of tests were undertaken by H. T. Goodjohn, now chief chemist to the Cia. Metalurgica de Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico; by H. J. Hub-bard, now superintendent of the Butters Divisadero Mines, Jocoro, San Salvador, C. A.; by E. D. Morton, now superintendent of the Arizona & Nevada Copper Mining Co., at Lunning, Nev.; and by A. W. Edelen, now superintendent of the Angangueo Unit of the American Smelting & Refining Co., in Michoacan, Mexico. A critical comparison of assay-methods that were found to be followed in the case of certain gouge-ores mined in the Mimbres range in New Mexico, and about which there had been much controversy, was made by D. F. Riddell, then Acting Professor of Assaying, and now superintendent of the Providentia Mines Co. of Parral, in Chihuahua, Mexico. To him is due the credit of much that is contained in the following notes, which he has generously permitted to be used in advance of the publication of the complete results.

THE late Walter Herd1 in 1929 gave a full description of past and present conditions in No. 2 mine, Springhill, Nova Scotia, developed theories regarding the cause of these bumps and made certain suggestions regarding possible methods of future development. Recapitulating briefly from Mr. Herd's paper, the seam is bituminous coal, averages 9 ft. in thickness and has a well defined parting containing fusain about 14 in. from the roof. This roof coal is somewhat stronger than the rest of the seam and has a tendency to cling to the roof. The pitch of the seam where it is now being worked is about 20°. The first manifestations of bumps began when the room and pillar workings had reached a depth of cover of 1900 ft. and under continuously increasing depth of cover these bumps increased to such an extent, both in number and severity, that in the year 1924 it became apparent that some change in the system of extraction was necessary. After closely studying all the factors involved and benefiting largely by valuable out-side advice obtained by the Provincial Department of Mines of Nova Scotia,2 the system of working was changed from room and pillar to longwall retreating. Mr. Herd's paper described in detail three remarkable bumps in the year 1928 in April, July and October that affected the 5700-ft. and 5900-ft. East levels, the last bump being so severe both in intensity and in extent of damage done that this district was abandoned. The longwall workings to the west of the slope had been stopped in the year 1926 owing to an inbreak of water, coming from the flooded waste of No. 3 seam lying some 400 ft. vertically overhead. This inflow was not excessive, but a large quantity of water being impounded in the old workings it was considered advisable to take the prudent course and not incur the risk of possibly increasing the flow by further working. This district has remained idle ever since.

ALTHOUGH enormous tonnages of sulfide lead and lead-silver ores are treated by flotation, the products of flotation mills treating oxidized ores of lead and silver are almost negligible. However, each year there is a slight tonnage increase, and it is possible, should a sizeable oxidized lead ore tonnage be developed, the field will become an important one. In 1918, the Shattuck-Arizona Copper Co. erected a plant at Warren, Ariz., for the treatment of oxidized gold-silver-lead ores. Glenn L. Allen worked out the metallurgy for this plant, employing tabling, followed by flotation concentration. The Shattuck-Denn Mining Co., successors to the Shattuck-Arizona Co., now employs straight flotation in the same mill, treating about 200 tons daily. In 1922, the San Diego mill of the American Smelting & Refining Co., in the Parral district, Chihuahua, Mexico, started operating a 600-ton mill on a mixed sulfide-oxide gold-silver-lead ore. Tables and flotation are used here, and about 200 tons of oxidized slime treated by flotation. In 1923, the Eureka Holly Mining Co. started operating a 90-ton mill at Eureka, Nev., using tables and flotation, on an oxidized lead-silver ore. In 1924, the American Smelting & Refining Co. started a 250-ton mill in northern Peru, to treat a high grade oxidized gold-silver ore with very low lead values. In 1924, the Grand Central Mining Co. started a 200-ton flotation mill on old oxidized gold-silver-lead tailings at Fairbank, Ariz. In 1926, the Compania International Minera, a subsidiary of the Union Corporation of London, started a 250-ton flotation mill on oxidized lead-silver ores, and during April of this year, the Phelps-Dodge Corp. will probably start a 250-ton mill at Warren, Ariz., on oxidized lead-silver ores, similar to those being treated in the Shattuck-Denn mill.

A relatively simple and effective technique is proposed to deal with the failure of geologic masses containing weakness planes. This technique, termed irextended" rupture envelope, provides a means to clearly distinguish rock and soil from fractured rock and, on a theoretical level, considers a matrix-inclusion system. It may also constitute the link between Mohr's and Griffith's failure theories. Included in the article are five sample problems concerning site location, structural design, strengthening the plane of weakness, changing the magnitudes of major and minor principal stresses and changing the orientations of major and minor principal stresses. Engineers trying to solve design problems in rock and soil mechanics have often assumed an iso-tropic and homogeneous medium. For naturally occurring geologic masses this assumption has always been viewed with regret. The following analysis which deals with the effects of plane anisotropy on failure presents a solution to this. The planes of weakness are joints, faults, bedding planes, fracture and cleavage (natural and induced), foliation and schistosity. The physical properties of these weakness planes include an undulating surface, frictional resistance, discontinuous extent, filling material, tightness and presence of water to cause a hydrostatic pore pressure. All of these properties relating to failure can be summarized in Mohr's rupture envelope for the plane of weakness. This, along with the geometrical orientation, strike and dip, of the plane of weakness produces what is termed an irextended" rupture envelope. In the Journal of the Iron and Steel Institute for the year 1878, in the account of the proceedings of the annual meeting in March of that year, when Mr. Bell read his paper On the Separation of Phosphorus from Pig-Iron, occurs the following statement, as part of the reported discussion of that paper: " Mr. Sidney Thomas stated that he had succeeded in effecting the almost complete removal of phosphorus in the Bessemer process. Experiments had been carried on at Blaenavon, with the co-operation of Mr. Martin, on quantities varying between 6 lbs. and 10 cwt., and some hundred analyses made by Mr. Gilchrist (who had the conduct of the experiments from the first) showing the removal of from 20 per cent. to 99.9 per cent. of phosphorus in the converter. He believed the practical difficulties in the way had been overcome, and that Cleveland pig might be made into good steel without any intermediate process. He hoped on a future occasion to lay full details before the Institute." I was present at that meeting, and I doubt if any one in the hall knew, either by sight or name, the young man who had dared to rise in that august body and claim that he had accomplished that after which the great metallurgists of Europe had been unsuccessfully striving ever since Mr. Bessemer's great discovery. THE detonation of a high-explosive charge having a metal-lined conical cavity (shaped charge) results in a fast-moving jet and a slow-moving slug.1-4 Clark and Bruckner reported the metallographic studies of a cast-iron slug. The present note describes the metallographic studies of a copper slug and discusses the principle of flow involved. The shaped charge consisted of a 5-cm diam cylinder of cast high explosive (60-40 RDX-TNT mixture) having a 45 deg and 0.16-cm thick copper cone. The copper (99.5 pct purity) had a grain size of 0.06 to 0.08 mm diam and a hardness of 65 to 75 Hv. These were fired into a deep container of water and the slugs were recovered undamaged. The longitudinal and transverse sections of the slug were polished, etched, and examined for mi-crostructural changes. Macroexamination revealed a radial grain flow inwards towards the center and a downward component of flow towards the base of the slug. Fig. 1 shows schematically the micro-structural changes observed on the longitudinal section of the slug. The region D near the apex and also along the outer surface of the slug was characterized by the presence of heavily deformed and twinned grains. Consolidated Gold Fields Limited published annually an excellent reference, GOLD 1978, GOLD 1979, giving the Supply and Demand for Gold, Recent Developments and Prospects, Soviet Gold Production, etc. This outstanding reference is authored by Christopher Glynn, Investment Department, London, Great Britain. The 1978 Report marked the tenth anniversary of Gold Field's review of world gold market developments; and from it and the 1979 report, the following information was derived. The recovery of gold is widespread in the Soviet Union. Originally, gold was mined principally in the Urals, but in the last few years several major deposits have been discovered in the southwestern areas of the Soviet Union. One of the most dramatic discoveries has been the Muruntau deposit in Western Uzbekestan. This deposit, discovered in 1958, is reported to be the largest and among the lowest cost producers in the Soviet Union. It is located in Armenia, approximately 750 km (465 miles) northeast of the Iran-Afghanistan border, lying in the center of the Kyzylkurn (Red Sands) desert at the foot of Muruntau Mountain. Free gold occurs in both fine and coarse size in quartz veins up to 20 m (66 ft) thick associated with a small percentage of sulfides, mainly arsenopyrite. The ore zone constitutes a large gold-enriched stock work of about 4 sq krn (1.5 sq miles). The development of Muruntau was a major undertaking with open -pit development and construction of the mill and refinery complex started early in 1967, and the first gold bar poured in mid-1969. At the end of the first construction stage in 1970, the mill building was an imposing structure about 38 m (125 ft) high and 330 (1,080 ft) in length housing, probably, 11 parallel milling circuits. The first construction stage also included six 50 m (165 ft) diameter thickeners and 30 Pachuca tanks. The original mill complex was tripled in size after large additional gold reserves were discovered at a depth of 600 m (1,970 ft); and the deposit is now being exploited by both open- pit and underground workings. Ore is ground in semi-autogenous mills with the free gold being recovered into a high-grade concentrate on shaking tables. Table tailings are purnped to duplex spiral classifiers in closed circuit with the grinding mills. Classifier overflow is then thickened before being transferred to the Pachuca building where cyanidation takes place. An ion exchange resin is then added in a countercurrent

Some explanation of methods of testing will be given before presenting the record of a series of physical tests of aluminum, other metals and alloys. I. The Methods Employed and Meaning of Diagrams. The test-bars used, 12 inches long and 4 inch square, are cast in green sand, with chills bedded in such a way that the ends of the bar run against them. By splitting the ends of the bar the depth of chill can be measured. The chills being held in the mould 121/8 inches apart, the space between the end of the bar and the face of the chill, after both are alike cold, is the amount of shrinkage, and is recorded in thousandths of an inch per foot.
