THE elastic, earthwaves produced naturally by earthquakes -have been used for a long time as evidence from' which to draw conclusions in regard to the constitution of the interior and crust of the earth. The elastic earthwaves produced artificially by occasional explosions and recorded by seismological .observatories were used to draw conclusions regarding the-geology of the intervening area. Intentionally produced elastic earthwaves in the past five years have come to be used extensively in the investigation of very local geologic structure. The seismic method of working geologic structure, which makes use of artificially controlled explosions and the resulting earthwaves, has developed almost `clairvoyant power in handling certain geologic situations, and in the discovery of salt domes in the Gulf Coastal: Plain region of Texas and Louisiana has 'scored the, most brilliant success.

THE utilization of rotary kilns, of the well-known cement type, for the preparation of iron ores, for the blast furnace, has become of considerable economic importance within the past 10 years in certain localities, notably those where the native ores are lean. Such kilns may be used simply for the agglomeration of ores too fine to be charged into the blast furnace (i.e., ores whose loss in the dust catchers is excessive, and whose fineness is detrimental to the working of the furnace), or for the desulphurization of lump and fine ores the sulphur content of which does not exceed 6 or 7 per cent. The desulphurizing action can be combined with that of agglomeration provided the kiln is sufficiently large. Other processes have been developed for the same purpose, but while I am not able to draw a comparison between them by reason of lack of sufficient data, it is safe to say that the kiln, if properly dimensioned for the character of ore to be treated, will compare favorably in its results, both as to economy and quality of product, with any other process. It is not, however, as well adapted for the treatment of flue dust, as is a sintering operation, on account of the large percentage of fine coke contained therein. Any combustible entering the kiln at its feed end renders the process very much more expensive and unsatisfactory on account of the difficulty of controlling the temperature, also because of the rapidity with which long "rings" form, due to the increased heat at the cooler end of the kiln. The greatest value of the kiln at present is in the treatment of pyrites cinder; that is, the residue from pyrites ore after the extraction of the greater part of the sulphur. This cinder, while high in iron content, has too much sulphur remaining in it to be allowed to form a large part of the blast-furnace burden, without further treatment. It will range in metallic iron from 42 per cent., representing a very low-grade cinder, from a domestic pyrites, to 64 per cent. of the residue from the best Spanish ore, and the corresponding silica content will vary from the maximum of about 25 per cent. to 1 ½ per cent. The residual sulphur depends largely on the type of burner used in the original desulphurization. In general, the leanest original ores retain the greatest amounts of sulphur. In

THE sound made by ball, pebble and rod mills has long been used by the operator as the "telltale " of their operation. The nature of this sound depends upon local conditions and the type of mill used. By experience an operator can tell whether the mill is running properly or not. Some operators are able to detect the difference in sound much better than others and get better results running the same mill under the same conditions. The automatic operation of a mill using sound as the fundamental means for maintaining control presents many problems. The satisfactory solution of these problems requires, for given operating conditions, a greater average output, with improved product for subsequent processing, than can be obtained by manual control. RELATION OF SOUND TO USEFUL GRINDING ENERGY Experience has taught us that there is a difference in character as well as in intensity of sound between a mill grinding wet and one grinding dry, in open or closed circuit, to obtain a coarse or fine product, on the same material, to say nothing of the effect with a variety of different materials. Broadly speaking, a wet-grinding mill operates best at a lower sound level than the same mill grinding dry, with other conditions the same. Several reasons for this variation in sound intensity under these conditions can be advanced, but the important point is that there is a difference, based upon practical results. Since these reasons may be more or less involved, and may be subject to much discussion, only one will be considered here. It is apparent that two balls hitting together or a ball striking the lining, if there is no intervening material, will produce the maximum sound. If a complete cushion of material is placed between the balls or ball and liner, so that the energy is dissipated without doing useful work, the balls will be unable to create enough pressure or force to fracture the particles, and the sound will be at a minimum. At some point in between-that is, where there is sufficient material between the balls or ball and liner so that the ball will fracture the particles without mashing them unduly-the sound

"The reduction works of the Boston & Montana Reduction department, near the north end of this dam is one of the reduction plants belonging to the Anaconda Copper Mining Company, the other being at Anaconda. These works employ about 1,100 men and have a capacity of about 3,800 tons of crude ore per day. This plant is now being remodeled to embody results of experiments and investigations which have been made with a view to more economic.al treatment of ores. A brief description of the plant as it will be after the remodelling is as follows:Concentrator Department: Consists of six units or sections, each section treating from 550 to 600 tons of crude ore per day. This department is not being. remodelled at the present time. A concentrating process, however, has been developed and partially installed in the old mill, and an experimental section embodying this concentration process has also been installed at the concentrator at Anaconda."

OF all the zinc that the world consumed in 1936-'38 the United States took about 31 per cent, and almost 14 per cent of the world's zinc supply in that period was used for galvanizing purposes in the United States. Further examination of the statistics shows that about 71/2 per cent (147,500 tons in 1939) of the world zinc consumption goes into the galvanizing of sheets in the United States, which is what I am going to talk about in this paper. There is nothing especially new about galvanizing; in every year since 1921 somewhere between 41 and 49 per cent of the country's zinc consumption has been used for this purpose, and yet few people not specialists in its manufacture know much about how it is made. You take an iron or steel sheet and dip it in molten zinc and there you have a galvanized sheet-that about epitomizes popular knowledge of the subject even among engineers.

THE East Texas oil field is the largest in the United States and perhaps the largest 'in the world ; likewise, it is one of the most interesting. The East Texas oil field is a water-drive field. Small amounts of salt water were produced from wells on the western side of the field from the bt-ginning of the development. By the end of 1933 (the field having been discovered in September 1930) water production had reached 9000 barrels per day. By the end of 1936, approximately 2000 wells were producing about 45,000 barrels of water per day, and the problem of salt water disposal attracted the serious attention of the operators. Salt water production in the field has steadily increased and today approximately 450,000 barrels of water per day is produced while the oil production averages about 375,000 barrels. The early development of the reverberatory furnace for smelting copper-ores was the work of the Welsh smelters, particularly those of Swansea. The first record of a reverberatory furnace is made by Jars, who states that in 1755 copper-smelting was effected .in reverberatory furnaces at Middleton-Tyas, in Yorkshire, England. The first patent, of any importance, for improvements in reverberatory furnaces was granted to Thomas Williams in 1778 for the granulation of the regulus. The next was that of William Evetts, in Sheffield, in 1812, for the cooling of the fire-bridge by the admission of air. Charge-hoppers above the furnaces were in common use in 1848. The size of the hearth of the furnaces about the beginning of the 19th century was commonly 11 by 8 feet. No material development was made until the Welsh process mas brought to Colorado, where Richard Pearce, as manager of the Argo works, near Denver, developed the furnace to meet the requirements of a custom plant, under keen competition with lead-silver smelting-plants, using blast-furnaces. His improvements are outlined in Fig. 1, elaborated by permission from E. D. Peters's excellent work,' to which the reader is referred for further details. This figure shows that the furiiaces were in 1878, 9 ft. 8 in. by 15 ft. in hearth; and in 1894, 16 by 35 ft., while the capacity of the furnace had been increased from 12 tons per 24 hr. to 50 tons in the same period.

The preparation of low-grade iron-ores by concentration, whether or not followed by an agglomeration of the concentrate, has in the United States only recently been recognized as a metallurgical process of vast economical importance for its iron indust.ry. This importance of the process lies not only in the fact that it makes possible the use of ores heretofore discarded on account of their low iron-content or their too high percentage of elements deleterious in the iron industry, but also in its produetion of a raw material for the blast-furnace that is more uniform in its physical character and chemically purer, with a higher iron-content, than the general run of natural ores. When mixed in the burden of the furnace, it lowers the amount of coke and fluxing-stone required per ton of pig-iron produced. The furnace-operations become more regular and more easily controlled. The pig-iron is of higher quality and more uniform in character. In brief, it is becoming recognized that the beneficiating of the natural iron-ore, even if it makes the furnace-ore higher in cost per unit of iron entering into the burden, may mean a lowering of the production-cost of the pig-iron and an improved product. At the present time, the Lake Superior district furnishes about 80 per cent. of all the iron-ore yearly produced in the United States. If the Southern States arc exempted the percentage runs as high as 93 per cent. These ores are showing a steady decrease in grade from year to year. For the past 10 or 15 years this falling off in the average grade has been about 0.5 per cent. a year. The lowered grade of ore means an in-

INTRODUCTION IDARADO Mining Company's mill and surface plant are at the portal of the Treasury tunnel at elevation 10,625 ft, 12 miles south of Ouray, Colo. In 1943 and 1944 this tunnel was extended in a westerly direction to tap the Black Bear vein, and, together with the recently completed 1100-ft inclined Treasury raise, provides access to the Black Bear mine. In 1945 a 250-ton mill was placed in operation to process development ores containing much needed copper, lead and zinc for war requirements, and to serve as a pilot testing unit for larger scale milling operations. In the years 1902 to 1927 some 329,000 tons of ore were produced from mine workings on the Black Bear vein that extended downward from elevation 12,325 ft at the Black Bear tunnel portal to elevation 11,618 ft, the lowest level of the mine. The ores were taken to the Cascade and Smuggler-Union mills near Telluride over two aerial tramways. Gold bullion, a copper-lead concentrate, and a zinc concentrate were produced. ORES The Black Bear is a compound fissure vein that has undergone several stages of mineralization. The first important stage is represented by complex ores of copper, lead and zinc in a quartz gangue. Precious metal content in this stage is low. The galena is argentiferous and varying amounts of tetrahedrite, freibergite and bornite tend to increase the normal copper content represented in chalcopyrite. The zinc occurs as a true sphalerite with little or no iron. Later re-openings of the fissure took place more or less co-extensively with the successive introduction of (1) abundant quartz gangue containing minor amounts of chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite; (2) free gold in a fluoritic quartz gangue; and (3) barren, low-grade quartz with minor amounts of pyrite as the only important sulphide. The sulphides show practically no oxidation and little mineralogic intergrowth. Because of the common overlapping of these successive stages of mineralization within a given mining area, considerable dilution of the base-metal content takes place, thus lowering the average mill-head grade. PLANT PRACTICE Metallurgical testing was started shortly after the Black Bear vein was encountered on Treasury tunnel level in 1944. Laboratory tests showed good flotability of the minerals in the ore and indicated an economic separation could be made of the copper, lead and zinc minerals into their respective concentrates. The success of the separation is close reagent control to maintain a balance between promotion and depression of the sulphides. To maintain this balance reagent consumption for the three metal separation is considerably higher than in ordinary lead-zinc flotation.

PNEUMATIC processes for converting molten pig iron to steel were the major producers of steel during the latter half of the 19th Century and until shortly after the turn of the century, when these processes began losing ground to their rival—the basic open hearth process. The first pneumatic process for converting molten pig iron to steel was introduced almost simultaneously by Sir Henry Bessemer in England and by William Kelley in the United States during the decade 1850-1860, but it was Bessemer who pushed it to a successful commercial operation. The process itself is so basically simple that it has not lent itself to many extensive or revolutionary improvements since its inception. During the first 30 yr, numerous' designs of vessel and many modifications of practice were tried before the industry standardized on something resembling current practice. The evolution in construction has resulted in proportions and arrangements based more on mechanical expedience than on metallurgical requirements. Many of the early converters were stationary and had to be tapped similarly to the cupola or open hearth furnace. Such types were used for many years in Sweden and Germany, but the rotating or tilting types were favored in England and the United States. There was evident trouble with bottom tuyeres, becAuse about half of the early designs were constructed for side blowing with tuyeres submerged below the metal-bath surface. Even portable tuyeres, introduced from above, were tried. The principal advance, which made bottom blowing practical, was the invention, in 1863, by Henry Bessemer, and subsequent improvement by A. L. Holley, of a detachable bottom so that the tuyere section could be renewed. In the meantime, it was the demonstration, by Robert Mushet, of the value of manganese in overcoming hot-shortness in converter steel, that made the process metallurgically feasible. At first, only the acid practice was used, and Swedish pig iron, because of its low sulphur and phosphorus, was in great demand. The development of a suitable basic lining, by Sidney G. Thomas and Percy G. Gilchrist in 1876-1879, made the process applicable to the high-phosphorus ores of Europe. From the beginning of the use of the Thomas-Gilchrist process, trouble was experienced in obtaining sufficiently high temperatures in the blown metal, particularly in small heats. It is necessary, of course, to have the low-carbon blown metal at a considerably higher temperature for handling from vessel to ladle to molds than is needed for the molten pig iron. All of the increase in temperature in a pneumatic process must be obtained from the heat of combustion of the elements contained in the pig iron plus that from silicon when ferrosilicon is added. In bottom blowing practice, carbon is almost completely burned, but inasmuch as it cannot be oxidized to a higher state of oxidation than to CO when in contact with liquid iron, only a minor portion of the heat-producing capacity is utilized. Under such conditions, it is not considered to be an efficient source of heat. In the acid practice, therefore, silicon and manganese are the large heat producers, are quickly oxidized, and are efficient fuels. Too much manganese, however, thins the slag greatly and tends to promote excessive slopping or throwing of slag and metal from the converter during the blow. Most operators, therefore, like to keep the manganese content of the iron below 0.60 pct, and thus the main source of heat is the silicon, which must be at least 1 pct and sometimes 2 to 3 pct for small blows such as for castings. Ferrosilicon is sometimes added during the blow to obtain an adequate temperature level. In the basic (Thomas) practice, even more heat is required, because cold lime is added to flux the phosphorus after it is oxidized, and the basic slag must be maintained at a proper temperature. WHEN a mine is changed from hand, to me-chanical loading, the character of the coal dumped at the tipple is changed in many ways. Selective mining is not so easy with mechanical load-ers, and where much picking is done at the face it is apt to be wasteful anyway. Much recoverable coal is apt to be lost by too free gobbing and, in my opinion, picking at the face should be confined to removal of heavy rock, such as pieces of roof or bottom or sulfur balls. and to such clearly defined and persistent bands as can be readily recognized and segregated. With mechanical loaders of the shovel type, even this amount of gobbing is almost impossible. When coal is shoveled into a conveyor there should be no difficulty in doing as much picking as now by hand loading. The size of lumps may be greatly increased, on ac-count of the ease of handling them with a shovel, as the miners will not break them up in order to lift them into cars. Fines may be increased. This is, of course, not universally true, yet it is my opinion that a shovel breaks the coal more, as a rule, than hand loading. This might not be true with all types of shovels and is cer-tainly not true with a conveyor, either with or without the "duck-bill." The average car load will be greatly reduced in fields such as Illinois and Indiana, in which it is the practice to build up the coal above the sides. Where "level full" regulations prevail there should be no material change. When the coal comes to the tipple these differences usually result in the discovery, that many changes are necessary in the preparation plant. The increase in the percentage of fine sizes will probably not bother the screen, but may overload the conveying apparatus. The larger size lump may clog the chute, but as a rule the efficiency of the sizing screens is not greatly affected. In one completely mechanized mine the proportions of 6-in. lump and 2-in. screenings, when loading by hand, were 16.9 and 51.3 per cent respectively. When loading mechanically, these proportions changed to 15 per cent lump and 53.5 per cent screenings. The picking force on the tipple has been increased from 14 on hand loading to 33 men on mechanically-loaded coal. This is for an output of about 5000 tons.

Subsidence of the ground surface is the inevitable result of high recovery longwall and room and pillar coal mining operations. Up to now, U.S. research into this phenomenon has been concerned primarily with documenting the magnitude and extent of ground movements and prediction of the attendant ground strains through traditional ap¬proaches that have been developed in Europe and the United Kingdom. Preoccupation with ground strain prediction has, unfortunately, diverted attention from the more meaningful objective of predicting the severity of damage to structures at ground surface and the prob¬able cost to repair such damage. An attempt has been made to rectify this situation by reviewing in detail one hundred thirty four cases of subsidence damage to dwellings above active mines in western Pennsylvania, identifying the types of damage and the circumstances under which damage took place. The data reveal that damage to dwellings virtually always includes basements in addition to the readily apparent effects to the superstructure. In 90 percent of the subsidence cases, more than half the repair cost is associated with damage to subgrade components. A damage classi¬fication system has been devised that relates observed damage to severity and repair cost in a uniform manner for conditions in the Northern Appalachian Coal Field. Damage severity has been examined in the context of depth to the mine, the character of the near¬ surface overburden materials, mining type and other parameters.

INTRODUCTION The principal objective of this chapter is to provide guidance in understanding and making effective use of published financial statements of mining companies. Although financial statements only represent a gathering together of information relevant to an enterprise's financial position and results of operations, they increasingly reflect the complexities of the modern day business environment. In the mining industry, a wide variety of accounting practices have evolved to deal with the unique aspects of the business in the absence of authoritative accounting pronouncements from standard-setting bodies. Given such complexities and divergent practices, financial statements of mining companies are not easily understood and cannot be used effectively as a tool in decision-making without a basic knowledge of fundamental accounting concepts, generally accepted accounting principles and their application in the mining industry. As such, this chapter is not restricted to a discussion of the accounting for the unique aspects of the mining industry. These aspects are dealt with at length but the text also includes a discussion of general accounting concepts and practices which have wide application in the mining industry. Frequent references are made in the text to international practices and to specific rules and requirements of individual countries. In this respect, the scope is restricted to four major mining environments, Canada, the UK, the US and Australia, all of which have made significant contributions to the development of generally accepted accounting principles. FINANCIAL STATEMENTS - ELEMENTS AND CONCEPTS Financial statements were originally a stewardship report to owners to satisfy them that management had given a proper account of the resources with which it had been entrusted. Today, the number of users of financial statements has expanded to include the following groups: - shareholders, present and prospective; - lenders, present and prospective; - financial analysts; - regulatory authorities; - taxing authorities; - labour unions and employees; and - creditors and customers. The expectations of these user groups differ. For example, investors and lenders require information that will indicate the adequacy of their security and the profitability of the enterprise; taxing authorities will be concerned with the concept of income; labour unions and employees will focus on the profitability of the enterprise. Ground Rules for Preparing Financial Statements Responsibility for Financial Statements Financial statements are the representations of management. This may strike the reader as a rather obvious statement. It is important to remember, however, the role of judgment in accounting. Notwithstanding the promulgation of accounting standards in the developed countries, considerable flexibility remains in the selection of accounting practices and methods and in their presentation. Arguably, there is more flexibility in the mining industry as few countries have developed standards to deal with its unique aspects. Accordingly, financial statements are as much a product of management's perspective and philosophy as they are a compliance document.

THE Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. has produced a large tonnage of 0.35 to 0.45 carbon forging steel, the acceptance of which was based on the physical properties of test specimens obtained by forging the original 5 3/4 in. (14.5 cm.) square bloom to a ¾ in. (1.9 cm.) round. Annealed and tempered specimens were required. The test bars were annealed by heating from 900 ° to 950° C. and cooling slowly in mica. The test bars were tempered by heating to 825° to 875° C., quenching in water, and drawing to 515° to 535° C. Immediately after heat treatment, the test pieces were machined to a diameter of 0.534 in. (1.38 cm.) and tested. Very good physical properties were obtained and no difficulty was experienced in meeting the specifications called for. ULTIMATE STRENGTH, ELONGATION, LB. PER SQ. IN. PER CENT. IN 4 IN. NOT LESS THAN Annealed specimens 78,230 to 92,450 18 Tempered 120,000 to 149,350 9 After experience oil this material, production of slightly higher carbon forging steel was started. The method of testing this material required that test blooms be either normalized or annealed. The normalizing consisted in heating to 850° to 900° C. and cooling in still air; the annealing, in heating to 850° to 900° C. and cooling in the furnace or in mica. From the treated bloom, the test pieces were taken either by core drilling or by sawing from points midway between the edges and the intersection of the diagonals. The cores or blocks were turned to a standard 2-in. test piece with a diameter of 0.564 in. and tested without further treatment. The physical requirements of the test pieces were:

THAT veterans are crowding the colleges is no longer news; 78 per cent of the 1916-47 enrollment in mineral industries curricula in the United States were veterans, but the rapid comeback from an estimated 1262 total mineral industries students in 1944-45 to 11,422 in 1946-47 is almost astonishing. The figure, which includes 1008 graduate students, is a substantial increase over the previous top record of 9619 in 1938-39. A small part of the increase is caused by the larger number of women entering the field, of whom there were c 9 in 1916-47. Petroleum leads the curricula with 34.5 % of the enrollment, metallurgy is second with 28%, and mining is third with 18%. Table 1. shows all curricula offered and those accredited by ECPD. Using the Mississippi River as a dividing line, 31 colleges in the East and 27 in the West offer curricula in the mineral industries.

MINING men in general- are a roving lot but not so Selwyn G. Blaylock. Immediately after graduation from McGill in 1899 he went to the Trail smelter and he is there today though he spent three or four years of his early professional life at other British Columbia mining centers. Either he sensed the great possibilities of the company of which he is now vice-president and general manager, or it sensed his; more probably both. Certainly the association was a happy and fortunate one.

A surface expansion was found to occur sometime after etching in Ti-A1 alloys containing 9.5 to 12.5 wt pct Al. The structure formed, grew, and disappeared with tzrrze. The surface expansion was followed by microscope observations and interferometric and lattice parameter measurements. Activation energy measurements for the growth of the "expansion structure" and chemical analysis indicated that the phenomenon occurred as a result of hydrogen pzckup during etching. It is proposed that hydrogen initially enters octahedral sites of Ti3Al coherent with a Ti and later shifts to the tetrahedral sites. It is postulated that expansion occurs when hydrogen enters the tetrahedral sites. The expansion structure disappeared, it is proposed, because of diffusion of hydrogen from the surface into the body of the alloy and because of loss of coherency of Ti3Al. In examining Ti-A1 alloys, Ence and arolinl observed markings on the surface of specimens. These markings did not appear after electropolishing only, but rather appeared only after etching. The markings appeared to grow as a function of time after etching and later seemed to disappear. Although the markings had some similarity to precipitates, showing, frequently, a Widmanstatten type of arrangement, the observation that other microstructural markings continue to be seen within the new structure suggested that it was actually not a precipitate. The source of this structure was unknown and an attempt was made in the present investigation to develop some understanding of its nature. It has been labeled expansion structure. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A) Alloys. Alloys in the range 6.5 to 14.5 wt. pct A1 were studied. Bars, 4 in. sq, forged from Bureau of Mines (73 Bhn) titanium consumably arc-melted 4-lb ingots,' as well as 50-g arc-melted buttons of desired aluminum contents were used. The 50-g buttons also used Bureau of Mines titanium (73 Bhn) and aluminum of 99.99 pct purity. Buttons containing up to 8.5 wt pct A1 were hot-rolled from a furnace at 900' . Those with higher aluminum contents were hand-forged on a titanium anvil, and heated with an oxygen-hydrogen torch in the region of 1200" to 1300°c. Frequent reheating kept the samples at the desired temperature range. After a reduction of about 30 pct, the samples were water-quenched. To eliminate any contamination picked up either during hot rolling or forging, at least 1 mil of the surface of the sample was taken off. B) Heat Treatment. Prior to heat treatment all alloys were vacuum-annealed to remove hydrogen. Samples were annealed at 900' until a vacuum of 10'5 mm Hg was established. After this treatment, the samples were wrapped in molybdenum sheet and heat-treated in argon-filled quartz capsules, which were broken under water or iced brine at the conclusion of the heat treatment. All heat treatments under dynamic vacuum were performed in a rapid-quench furnace. This consisted of a molybdenum-lined quartz tube attached to a vacuum system and through a stopcock to a beaker of water. At the completion of the heat treatment the vacuum stopcock was closed, the furnace shut off, and dropped below the quartz tube. Then immediately the inlet stopcock was opened and water admitted until the tube was filled. The steam formed was allowed to escape through the inlet stopcock. This method was used in heat treatments up to llOO°C. C) Metallography. Specimens for metallographic examination were ground, then electropolished using a Disa Electropol machine with a perchloric acid electr01te. Specimens were etched with R-etch.3 A standard etching time of 3 min was used, with the specimen being agitated during immersion. D) Sample Preparation for X-ray Analysis. Samples 0.2 to 0.5 mm in diam were produced from heat-treated rods which were turned to 2 mm diam on a lathe and then rotation-etched. An etchant consisting of 1 pt HF, 7 pt HN03, and 12 pt HzO was satisfactory. With the rod rotating in a vertical position at 50 to 100 rpm, a needle with uniform dimensions could be obtained. Care had to be taken to insure that the rod was at the center of rotation, otherwise cavitation developed. If a small unevenness developed, it was possible to grind it off with a fine emery paper. E) X-ray Diffraction. All X-ray work was done on a North American Phillips X-ray diffraction apparatus and a Jarrell Ash microfocus X-ray unit. The Phillips unit was used with a copper target and nickel filter. The Jarrell Ash unit was fitted with a cobalt target and iron filter. For the Phillips unit 35 kva and 20 ma were used, whereas for the microfocus unit with the 100-p fixed-focus gun 40 kv and 1.5 ma were used. It was found that alignment of cameras on the Jarre11 Ash unit was very critical. The X-ray beam contains an intense area which is not the beam center. The cameras were aligned with the intense region by monitoring the beam coming out of the camera with a Geiger counter. Adjustments were made until a maximum intensity was obtained. A Phillips diffractometer with a Brown chart recorder furnished some of the lattice parameter data. The divergence slit up to 80 deg 28 was I deg; above 80 deg, a 4-deg opening was used, while the scatter slit was1 deg and the receiving slit had a 0.003-in. opening. The general scanning rate was 1 deg per min, while peaks of special interest were rescanned at -j deg per min. The Year Book of the Institute is mailed with this Bulletin. Its membership lists, both alphabetic and geographic, are corrected to Jan. 1, 1918, but its list of officers is revised inn accordance with the elections in February, 1918. The amendment to the Constitution, relating, to qualifications for membership, adopted at the same time, is also inserted in its proper place. We would call attention to the Honor Roll, heading the list of membership. This includes the names of those whom we know (in February, 1918) to be on active military duty, as well as those who are rendering emergency service to the Government in other branches. We are aware that the list is not complete, and shall be grateful for information as to any omissions or corrections. Because of the rapid movement of the military members, their addresses have been omitted from the alphabetic list. Mail addressed to such members, and sent to the office of the Institute, will be forwarded to the best of our information at the time.
