This paper discusses the most dangerous form of corrosion encountered in condensate-well oil production, the discovery of the agent causing this corrosion and the remedial chemical treatment proved effective by field use. The injection of ammonium hydroxide, even as little as one quart per day, has proved effective in preventing gas-condensate well corrosion. The injection of "Bone oil" is applied to wells producing brines containing calcium and magnesium salts. Introduction The severe corrosion of equipment in high pressure gas condensate wells has been a problem for several years and numerous papers have been presented on the subject. The term "gas condensate" or "distillate well" is applied to a distinct variety of hydrocarbon producing well, the characteristics of these wells being high bottom-hole (formation) pressures and temperatures and high gas production. These wells usually produce about 40 gal of water per million cubic feet of gas and the gas contains from 0.1 pct to 2 pct carbon dioxide. In the operation of this type of well, the operators soon noted severe internal corrosion of the pipe carrying the production. In some instances the dl tubing has been found to be corroded to perforation in eight months. The high well head pressures of 2500 to 8000 psi makes any weakening of the well equipment by corrosion extremely hazardous. Bursting of the well equipment results in very expensive repair operations and may result in the loss of valuable production, loss of the costly well, or even loss of life. In November 1944, a gas-condensate well in a Gulf Coast field producing from 9500 ft showed a tubing leak. The well was "killed" by filling it with mud through the tubing, and then the tubing was pulled. Corrosion was found to have caused several perforations in the tubing, Fig I. While the mud was being circulated to kill the well, a high pressure jet from the corroded hole in the tubing perforated the casing and damaged the well to the extent that the cost of repairs amounted to $75,000. In November 1944, another gas-con-densate well in a Gulf Coast field producing from 11,400 ft showed tubing failure. This well had been producing an average of 2,500,000 cu ft of gas daily for two years. In the workover of this well, it was found that a hole one inch in diameter had corroded through the tubing and that corrosion had reduced the wall of the tubing to less than half the standard thickness over large areas of the interior of the tubing. It was found that corrosion had also caused two leaks in the casing. After four months spent in an attempted workover failed to make the well safe for further production, the well was plugged and abandoned at a total loss of $300,000,00.

An experimental technique has been developed for carrying out a dynamic tensile stress-strain test in which plastic strain is measured continuously throughout the microstrain region extending through the macroflow region to total deformations of 5 pet. The tests were carried out on niobium, samples having interstitial impurity levels of 160 and -800 ppm at temperatures ranging from room temperature down to 100°K. A band spectrum of activation energies was obtained from calculations based on the measured activation volumes and temperature dependence of flow stress. The inability of a single rate-controlling process to predict such a phenomenon has led to the proposal that several sequential rate-controlling dislocation mechanisms are operative in the preyield micro-strain region. These are thought to be: the motion of geometrical kinks, the formation of double kinks in edges, and finally in the macrostrain region the formation of double kinks in screws. In less pure niobium the effect of interstitial impurities is shown to be dominant in the microstrain region, suggesting that a fourth probable mechanism is overcoming interstitial barriers instead of geometrical kink motion and the formation of double kinks in edge dislocations. THE principal fundamental aim of most mechanical properties studies of crystalline solids is to determine the dislocation mechanisms responsible for the plastic behavior. The extension of such studies to the region of preyield microstrain behavior has received renewed attention in the past few years as the details of macroscopic flow behavior have become better understood. For the most part, microstrain studies have been carried out using one of two variations of a single experimental technique.1 The first method involves loading the sample at a constant extension rate to a predetermined stress level (less than the macroscopic yield stress), instantaneously unloading, and then determining the extent of plastic deformation to a sensitivity of 10"6. The microscopic stress-strain curve is then constructed from the results of a repeated series of such individual measurements, each of which involves loading to an incrementally higher stress level, by relating the accumulated plastic microstrain for each step to the maximum applied stress in that step. The second variation, also carried out by step-wise increases in stress, measures the total strain to a sensitivity of ~10"6 and relates the maximum stress to the area of closed hysteresis loops that are generated under certain conditions (namely, prestrained samples). The foregoing methods have yielded interesting information about the nature of preyield deformation and plastic response to stresses below the yield stress, but they offer certain disadvantages for studying the dynamic behavior of dislocations. In the first method it is physically impossible to specify a plastic strain rate inasmuch as the test sample is reexposed, as it is loaded to its maximum stress in a particular step, to lower stresses at which flow will take place. The strain corresponding to a given stress level on the stress-microstrain curve thus generated will then always be greater than that at the corresponding stress level of a truly dynamic test carried out at the same extension rate. The second method has been used to obtain correlations with dynamic macroscopic flow parameters by applying dislocation damping theory to the hysteresis loop areas.2 The approach has had some success but suffers in that only samples that have been prestrained a few percent can be studied. Plant nutrients are obtained by plants from both the air and the soil. Carbon dioxide, a gaseous form of carbon and oxygen, supplies the carbon which usually makes up 50% or more of plant structure. Plants are capable of absorbing carbon dioxide directly from the air. Most of this nutrient comes from the air, although some carbon dioxide is absorbed by soil water and taken into the plant as liquid. Growing plants use more water than any other substance. Plant nutrients in the soil dissolve in soil water; soil water entering the plant carries nutrients into the plant structure. Water is then given off into the air as the plant breathes or transpires. The inorganic or mineral portion of the nutrients which plants require comes from the soil. Inorganic or mineral composition of plants is usually less than 5% of their weight, and this mineral requirement, usually lacking in the soil, must be provided by fertilizers. Proper fertilization of a soil to improve its mineral level and productivity is the basis for the fertilizer industry (Thomas, 1960). There are 13 essential plant nutrients which often must be added to soils or plants and are generally considered as fertilizer minerals. These nutrients are divided into the categories: primary minerals (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium); secondary minerals (calcium, magnesium, sulfur); and micro or trace minerals (boron, iron, manganese, copper, zinc, molybdenum, chlorine). Further, cobalt is often added to fertilizers. Although it is not considered to be an essential plant nutrient, it is essential to animal health and is often applied to forages as a fertilizer constituent. One point of major significance to the fertilizer industry is that not all nutrient carriers supply that nutrient in a chemical form which will be available to the plant. Thus, a product which may be considered a fertilizer mineral may require substantial processing or treatment before it becomes useful as a nutrient carrier. Fertilizer Industry Scope Until about 1900 demands for higher crop yields were met simply by bringing new agricultural lands into cultivation. Since that time great progress has been made in increasing yields through fertilization and improved varieties and cultural practices. The importance of the fertilizer industry to the economy and welfare of the U.S. is widely recognized. [Fig. 1] illustrates the relationship of lime and fertilizers to crop yields. In terms of tons of fertilizer products, the growth of the industry has been phenomenal, particularly between 1950 and 1970. Table 1 shows the increase in fertilizer usage. Primary Plant Nutrients in Fertilizers Primary minerals (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) are designated as such because of their significance to plant growth. Practically all soils are deficient in both nitrogen and phosphorus, and most of them are also deficient in potassium. Consequently, these nutrients

The iilzfluence of catalytic agents on the oxidation of ZnS has been studied under pressure leaching conditions, using a chemically prepared sample of ZnS which was substantially unreactive on heating at 113°C with dilute sulfuric acid and 250 psi oxygen. Nurnerous prospective catalysts were added at the ratio of 0.024 mole per mole ZnS in the above reaction but pvonounced catalytic activity was confined to copper, bismuth, rutheniuwl, molybdenum, and iron in order of. decreasing effectiveness. In the absence of acid, where sulfate was the sole product of oxidation, catalysis was exhibited by copper and ruthenium only. Parameters affecting the oxidation rate were catalyst concentration, temperature, time, oxygen pressure, and a7riount of acid, the first two being most important. The main product of oxidation in the acid reaction was sulfur, with trinor amounts of sulfate. An electrochemical (galvanic) mechanism has been suggested for the sulfuv-forming reaction, whereby the relatively inert ZnS is "activated" by incorporation of catalyst ions in the lattice and the same catalysts subsequently accelerate the reduction of dissolved oxygen at cathodic sites on the ZnS surface. Insufficient data was obtained to Provide a detailed mechanism for sulfate fornzation, which is favored at low acidities and probably proceeds th'rough intermediate transient species not identified in the preseni work. THE oxidation of zinc sulfide at elevated temperatures and pressures takes place according to the following simplified reactions: ZnS + io2 + H2SO4 — ZnSO4 + SG + HsO [i] ZnS + 20,-ZSO [21 In dilute acid both reactions occur but Reaction [I] is usually predominant, whereas in the absence of acid only Reaction [2] can be observed. Both proceed very slowly with chemically pure zinc sulfide but can be greatly accelerated by the addition of suitable catalysts, as suggested by jorling' in 1954. Nevertheless, an initial success in the pressure leaching of zinc concentrates was achieved by Forward and veltman2 without any deliberate addition of catalytic agents and it was only later that the catalytic role of iron, present in concentrates both as (ZnFe)S and as impurities, was recognized and eventually patented.3 It is now apparent that another catalyst, uiz., copper, may have also played a part in the successful extraction of zinc, since copper sulfate is almost universally used as an activator in the flotation of sphalerite and can be adsorbed on the mineral surface in sufficient amount The importance of catalysis in oxidation-reduction reactions such as those cited above has been emphasized by various writers and Halpern4 sums up the situation when he writes that "there is good reason to believe that such ions (e.g., Cu) may exert an important catalytic influence on the various homogeneous and heterogeneous reactions which occur during leaching, particularly of sulfides, thus affecting not only the leaching rates but also the nature of the final products." Nevertheless relatively little work has appeared on this topic, one of the main reasons being that sufficiently pure samples of sulfide minerals are difficult to prepare or obtain. When it is realized that 1 part Cu in 2000 parts of ZnS is sufficient to exert a pronounced catalytic effect, the magnitude of the purity problem is evident. An incentive to undertake the present work was that an adequate supply of "pure" zinc sulfide became available. When preliminary tests established that the material, despite its large surface area, was substantially unreactive under pressure leaching conditions, the inference was made that it was sufficiently free from catalytic impurities to be suitable for studies in which known amounts of potential catalytic agents could be added. The first objective in the following work was to identify those ions or compounds which accelerate the reaction rate and, for practical reasons, to determine the effects of parameters such as amgunt of catalyst, temperature, time, acid concentration, and oxygen pressure. The second and ultimately the more important objective was to make use of the experimental results to further our knowledge of the reaction mechanisms occurring under pressure leaching conditions. The fact that catalysts can dramatically increase the reaction rate suggests that physical factors such as absorption of gaseous oxygen, transport of reactants and products, and so forth, are not of major importance under the experimental conditions employed and an opportunity is thereby provided to concentrate on the heterogeneous reaction on the surface of the sulfide particles. As will appear in the sequel, the first of these objectives has been achieved in a semiquantitative fashion but a great deal still remains to be clarified in the field of reaction mechanisms. EXPERIMENTAL a) Materials. The white zinc sulfide used was a chemically prepared "Laboratory Reagent" material (B.D.H.) and X-ray diffraction tests showed it to contain both sphalerite and wurtzite. The specific surface area, measured by argon absorption at 77"K, varied between 3.9 and 4.6 sq m per g. Analysis gave 65.0 pct Zn (67.1 pct theory) and 31.9 pct S (32.9 pct theory). Other metallic sulfides (CdS, FeS, and so forth) used in the experiments were also chemical preparations of "Laboratory Reagent" grade. Samples of mar ma-

During the last few years, one of the great problems in the milling of all ores has been that of grinding. This subject involves not merely the cost of the operation, but also the selection of the proper degree and character of grinding to yield the best metallurgical results on the given ore. Considering the diversity of machinery, one is led to wonder at the variety of grinding methods employed, even when realizing that metallurgy demands varying products. In an attempt to investigate the relative grinding resistances of a number of ores now being milled in this country and Alaska, the manage-mxitofthe Portland mills requested Samples of average mill-run of ore from various companies. The request met with a ready response, indicating the desire of all operators to gain information on the subject. The difficulties involved in this investigation were numerous, lack of time for outside problems during this strenuous period being a serious one. Also, we were unable, in the time, to obtain a correct 150-mesh screen; in the screen analyses tabulated and plotted herewith, the 150-mesh screen was used merely to protect the 200-mesh screen, not to ascertain points on the curves. The experimental grinder was a small iron tube-mill, 8 by 121/2 in., in which was placed a definite number (74) and weight (3450 gm.) of 3/4-in. steel balls, 1 Ib. water and 1 Ib. ore. To obtain uniform conditions, each ore was first crushed and screened, and from the sized products a "standard feed" was artificially prepared, the same standard being adopted for all tests in that particular series. The principle formulated by Grossmannl for calculating hardenability of steel by multiplying the ideal diameter of "pure" iron-carbon alloys by factors for grain size and alloying elements has been confirmed on many steels and has proved useful in designing substitute alloy steels. Grossmann found that the typical behavior of the multiplying factors was to increase directly in proportion to the amount of the alloy present in a steel. However, the multiplying factor for the effect of silicon on hardenability was found by Grossmann to increase to a lesser degree as the amount of silicon was increased. In view of the increasing use of silicon in heat-treating steels, the effect of silicon on hardenability is becoming more important. Calculation of the hardenability of high-silicon steels made at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories, Inc., indicated that the multiplying factor for silicon increased directly in proportion to the amount of silicon present. A more extended study of high-silicon steels covering fairly wide ranges of grain size, carbon, manganese, and aluminum has confirmed that up to 2 per cent silicon the multiplying factor is directly proportional to the silicon content. Manganese and aluminum factors have also been! determined. The results of the study offer strong confirmation of the general validity of Grossmann's multiplying principle. Testing Procedure Steels on which the study of the effect of silicon on hardenability was based were made in high-frequency induction furnaces using Armco iron and standard alloying materials. The ingots were forged to bars, and sections were normalized prior to machining Jominy hardenability test specimens. The Jominy test was carried out under standard conditions.2 The depth of hardness penetration for determination of ideal diameter at "half hardness" was taken at the hardness level indicated in Fig. 29 in Grossmann's paper by the solid line for 50 per cent martensite in plain carbon steel. The depth of penetration of hardness on the Jominy specimen was converted to ideal diameter by the relation given in Fig. 28 of Grossmann's paper. Chemical analysis was determined on a sample taken adjacent to the Jominy specimen. Aluminum was determined as "acid-soluble aluminum" rather than as total aluminum, as it is probably more representative of the aluminum that is effective as an alloying agent. In addition to the elements nominally present in the steels, analyses were made for residual phosphorus, sulphur, nickel, copper, molybdenum and chromium on one heat of those made with the same materials during the same period. Actual grain size was determined by microscopic examination of small samples quenched in water after receiving the same thermal cycle as the Jominy hardenability specimens. Chemical analyses, heat-treatment, grain size, and hardenability are shown in Table I representing three ranges of composition.

Season-cracking is a type of failure of brass that results from the simultaneous effect of stress and certain corrodants. The object of this paper is to present data that will aid in a more complete understanding of the mechanism of season-cracking and related phenomena. Results presented show that certain high copper alloys are susceptible to season-cracking or stress-corrosion cracking, and possible explanations are discussed. Starting at least as far back as 1906, many papers have been devoted to this subject but the symposium1 held in Philadelphia in 1944 is the richest source of information. In order to study season-cracking, several of the many variables were held constant so as to learn the effects of others. Season-cracking is generally understood to refer to the corrosion cracking of brass having internal stresses;²,³ it is a special case of the general stress-corrosion cracking. Inasmuch as applied stresses are more readily produced and controlled, they were used exclusively in this research and the resulting phenomenon must he called stress-corrosion cracking.²,³ Only constant tensile stresses were used. The agents believed to be most frequently responsible for season-cracking are ammonia. amines and compounds containing then]. Both moisture and oxygen also appear to he necessary. Therefore, an atmosphere containing ammonia, water-vapor and air was selected for these tests. Briefly, the work consisted of exposing sheet metal specimens, having a reduced section ¼ by 0.050 in., of copper-base alloys to the effect of static tensile stresses between 5,000 and 20,000 psi and simultaneous contact with a. continuously renewed atmosphere containing 80 pct air, 16 pct ammonia and 4 pct water vapor at 35°C. The gas mixture and the speci- mens were maintained above the dew-point. The time-to-failure in minutes was the primary measure of results. In order to limit the experiment to finite time, it was considered that a specimen which had neither failed nor undergone microscopically detectable cracking in 40,000 min. (4 weeks) while under a stress of 10,000 psi or more could be considered immune to cracking. This is merely a convenient limit and is not to be considered proof of immunity. Supplementary tests in the absence of stress using weight loss or microscopical appearance as measures of attack were made. Apparatus The apparatus used in this research is shown in Fig 1. To facilitate the description it may conveniently be divided into six parts: stress-producing units, test chamber, gas train, electrical controls, timers and gas analysis device. A stress-producing unit is shown in an exploded view at the left in Fig 2. At the right is an assembled unit with a specimen in place in the lower portion; it is this part that remains in the ammonia atmosphere during a test. The upper part contains a spring, a central threaded rod, a large nut and necessary washers, pins, and so forth. Stress is produced in the specimen by screwing down the top nut against the spring, thus putting a tensile load on the central rod and so on the specimen. The wrench that turns the nut by extending through the upper cap, is seen at the upper right of the figure. The magnitude of the load is gauged by measuring from the pin that extends through the side of the tube, to a fixed point on the large flange. Measurement is made with a vernier beam caliper, shown at the right of the figure. The necessary spring compression to give a desired stress is calculated from the calibration curve of the spring and the dimensions of the specimen. The test chamber, center Fig 1, consists of a thermally insulated steel box 32 in. long by 10 in. high by 7 in. wide. A horizontal baffle reaching nearly to each end divides the chamber equally. Below this baffle are inlets for air and ammonia, a heating coil and a fan. Thus the gases are warmed and mixed in the lower level and flow past the specimens in the upper level. A thermo-regulator and thermometer project into the upper space. The top is pierced by 12 ports flanked by 3/8 in. threaded studs. A test starts when a port is opened and a unit containing a stressed specimen is thrust through it and bolted down against a neoprene gasket. The test chamber is held at 35°C. The gas train, right rear Fig 1, carries ammonia and air continuously to the test chamber. Tank ammonia passes through two reducing valves, a needle valve, a flow meter and into the test chamber. The air from either the plant compressor or a small laboratory compressor passes through wool towers and flow controls to the flow-meter. It then bubbles through water at 34°C and through a heated line to the test chamber. The work that Dr. Cain is doing on gases in steel should have a highly important bearing on investigational work in connection with steel-making practice. We found, for example, in our work in connection with the use of manganese in open-hearth practice that we needed expressions for the manganese efficiency and the "condition" of the steel. To get these figures we assumed that we would need to know the amount of FeO at different stages of the heat and the amounts of the gases present. This required simultaneous analyses of our samples for FeO and the gases and Dr. Cain seems to be the only investigator who has considered the analytical work from this point of view. That he has done so is very encouraging and it is to be hoped that his work will solve the mys-teries now surrounding this neglected phase of steel metallurgy. Those interested in the Ledebur method for use in connection with the efficiency of manganese as a "deoxidizing " agent will he disappointed to learn that more recent work at the Bureau indicates that Ledebur determinations are not reliable. The principal source of error seems to be due to the partial reduction of the ferrous oxide by the carbon present in the steel. However, it seems like an unnecessary criticism of the Ledebur method to state (p. 1319) that it proved of little value because it showed little differences in oxygen for a series of steels treated with ,various reagents and showing variations in physical properties and free-

The behavior of the reverse-combustion process in a linear adiabatic system is theoretically investigated by means of an idealized physical model. T his model is described by a pair of non-linear equations involving heat and mass transfer which are coupled by a concentration-dependent reaction-rate function of the Ar-rhenius type. The differential equations governing the quasi steady-state temperature and concentration distributions are approximately solved by using either physical or mathematical simplifications. It is shown that the reverse -combustion process can be mechanistically described by simple physical models whose behavior equations can be solved formally. It is further demonstrated that the derived reverse-combustion equations can be solved numerically within the error limits for the experimental data. The theoretically predicted peak temperature-flux-velocity relationship exhibits reasonable agreement with experimental data obtained from Athabasca tar sand. The principal contribution of this work lies in its usefulness as a starting point for developing a more comprehensive theory. A description of the vaporization-coking process must be obtained; then, the theory must be extended to three dimensions to include geometrical effects and heat losses. INTRODUCTION In another paper,'" he physical processes visualized as occurring during reverse combustion have been described. In this paper, the extent to which an elementary theory can account for experimental observations is determined. Theoretical results that can be used to estimate some of the behavior characteristics of importance to this process are also presented. Since it is not possible to include all the features of the combustion mechanism of which we are currently aware, the mathematical formulation refers to the highly idealized system developed herein. This simplified physical model is based on the simultaneous transfer of mass and heat accompanied by a chemical reaction: it is described mathematically by a pair of coupled, nonlinear differential equations. Similar sets of equations have been studied extensively in the field of flame propagation; an excellent review of these investigations has been published by Evans.1 FORMULATION OF THE PROBLEM It will be recalled that the experiments are performed with a thin-walled cylindrical tube that is uniformly packed with sand and oil. The system is maintained substantially adiabatic by means of heat supplied externally in such a way that the radial temperature gradient in any plane normal to the axis of the tube approaches zero. Initially, the tube is at ambient temperature, except at one end where it is rapidly heated to a predetermined temperature. When the prescribed temperature is achieved, air is caused to flow into the cold end of the tube. As the oxygen in the air stream contacts the hot oil, a localized exothermic reaction takes place. The generated heat is conducted and convected away from the reaction zone so that definite temperature and concentration profiles are rapidly established and move uniformly in a direction opposite to that of the air flow (Fig. 1). As a consequence of this mode of oxidation, all of the oxygen in the air is consumed; then, the remaining nitrogen and the gaseous combustion products sweep out all vaporized hydrocarbons and leave an immobile hydrocarbon-coke on the sand.

Climax Molybdenum's plan for the Henderson 30,000 tpd molybdenite plant didn't just happen. It slowly evolved over a period of 3% years. Many plants cannot afford similar delays, but the Henderson project will take about 10 years to complete from the time the orebody was first discovered until production begins. Pilot plant testing results with both the single stage and two-stage semi-autogenous grinding circuits were highly favorable in terms of operating costs reduction-so much so, that the Amax subsidiary made the decision to go with semi-autogenous grinding for the Henderson mill.

The effects of ternary and quaternary additions of aluminum, oxygen, and carbon on the mechanical properties of high-purity titanium-molybdenum alloys were studied for several microstructural conditions. Heat treatments were designed to produce 1) ß-quenched, 2) equiaxed ß) transformed (acicular) and 4) stabilized -P microstructures. Tension, impact, and hardness tests were performed. Transformations from the ß phase were followed by hardness measurements and metallography. The ß-to-w transformation was slowed by aluminum additions; carbon and oxygen additions increased the transformation rate. In addition to solid-solution strengthening, these solutes may increase or decrease strength by altering the /3 transformation kinetics. Aluminum additions promote the formation of strain-induced martensite, and lower yield strengths at compositions near 12 pct molybdenum.. a-P alloys are more ductile with equiaxed than with transformed microstructures. High strength levels can be reached by aging in many cases. Strength levels of the aged specimens usually are lowered slightly by straining prior to aging. ALLOYS of molybdenum with titanium form an iso-morphous alloy system which has been the subject of several investigations. Additions of substitu-tional and interstitial -stabilizing elements provide means of improving mechanical strength and con- trolling the heat-treatment response of the binary alloys. The work reported here forms a part of a continued study of the effects of microstructure on the mechanical properties of high-purity titanium alloys. Previous papers have considered the various binary alloys (Ti-Mo, Ti-Al, Ti-C, and Ti-0) that form the bases for the ternary and quaternary alloys included here. The compositions were selected to correspond with the previous binary alloys. Further, the high purity of the alloying components was maintained, so that direct comparisons with earlier work can be made. The total research program included a large number of compositional, microstructural, and testing variables. The data reported here have been selected to provide a reasonably complete and representative summary of the results. The reader is referred to the original Air Force Report for a complete tabulation of the results. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES All the alloys used in this work were prepared from high-purity electrolytic titanium produced by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. A typical furnished analysis showed the following impurities in wt pct, balance This analysis is equivalent to that of iodide-refined titanium. In addition, hardness, tensile, and impact tests made using unalloyed electrolytic titanium showed it to have properties equivalent to those obtained with iodide titanium and suitable for these studies of high-purity base alloys.

The oxidation of Ni-3 to 25 wt pd Al alloys has been studied in 0. 1 atm of oxygen at temperatures between 900° and 1300°C. These alloys have been found to oxidize by three different mechanisms which depend on the temperature of- oxidation and the alloy composition. Two of the three mechanisms do not permit a continuous layer of Al,0, to be formed on the alloy surface and the oxidation rates are greater than that for pure nickel. The third mechanism results in the formation of an external A1203 scale and lke oxidation rates are about three orders of magnitude smaller than those for pure nickel. The minimum amount of aluminum required for the formation of external scales of A L,0, has been determined. NICKEL-base alloys are currently the main source of materials for use at elevated temperatures in gas turbine engines. These alloys are usually coated to obtain oxidation resistance. Coatings on nickel-base alloys are frequently formed by reaction of the alloy with aluminum whereby alloyed nickel aluminides are formed. The alloyed nickel aluminides provide protection to the nickel base alloy because external scales of A1203 (alumina) are formed during oxidation and mass transport through A120, is slow in comparison to mass transport through most other oxides. In view of the protective properties of A1203, it is important to know how much aluminum is required in these alloys in order to form external scales of AlzO,. The present paper is concerned with the oxidation kinetics and the oxidation mechanisms of Ni-A1 alloys and the minimum amount of aluminum required in these alloys for the formation of external scales of Alz03. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS When a Ni-A1 alloy is heated in oxygen at elevated temperatures, the following reactions can take place on the surface of the alloy where the oxide phases are assumed to be virtually pure: These oxide phases are in the form of nuclei scattered over the surface of the alloy and, in view of their rapid formation, they need not be in equilibrium with the alloy. As the oxidation process continues, equilibrium between the alloy surface and the oxide phases is approached and the stability of the oxide nuclei is determined by the composition of the alloy at the alloy/oxide interface because of the following reactions: 3NiA1204 + 2A1 (alloy) = 4AlzO3 + 3Ni (alloy) [41 4Ni0 + 2Al (alloy) = NiA120, + 3Ni (alloy) [ 5 1 Application of the mass-action law to Eqs. [4J and [5J yields the following equilibrium conditions for these reactions: where aA1 and aNi are the activities of aluminum and nickel, are the standard free energies of formation of NiO, A1203, and NA1204, respectively, R is the gas constant, and T is the absolute temperature. If the composition of the alloy at the alloy/oxide interface is such that (akl/ahi) is greater than the equilibrium values defined by Eqs. [6] and [7], then Reactions (41 and [5] will go to the right as written. Conversely, if the alloy composition is such that the activity ratio (aLl,/aki) at the alloy/oxide interface is less than the equilibrium values, then Reactions [4] and [5] will proceed to the left. The equilibrium activity ratios in Eqs. [6] and 171 can be calculated since values for the standard free energies of formation of the oxide phases are available. Standard free energies of formation for NiO and A1203 have been tabulated by Elliott and ~leiser.' The standard free energy of formation for NiA1204 can be obtained from the data of Tretjakow and Schmalzried.' The results of these calculations are tabulated in Table I. Table I shows that the following inequality is valid over the temperature interval 900" to 1300°C: (Reaction [5]) (Reaction [4]) « 1and therefore the aluminum activity for these compositions can be taken as equal to the square root of the activity ratios (i.e., aNi = 1). The principal factors influencing the total percent elongation of a lead-tin eutectic and several low-alloy steels which exhibit superplasticity were investigated. These factors are: a) Strain-rate sensitivity of the stress (m). b) Specimen geometry; in particular, diameter-to-length ratio (d0/l0), and surface irregularity (e.g. notches). A feature of the tensile deformation of a superplastic alloy is the early appearance of a neck which continues to extend throughout the test. As a result the total elongation is directly related to the diameter-to-gage-length ratio. The strain-rate sensitivity of the stress varies during extension, mainly because of microstruc-tural changes. A satisfactory correlation exists between the minimum strain-rate sensitivity and total elongation, as indicated in the equation shown below. Notches cause a considerable reduction in total elongation and their effect is greatest at high values of strain-rate sensitivity. An initial notch depth exists below which there is no appreciable effect on elongation. An equation relating elongation to strain-rate sensitivity and specimen geometry is proposed, THE total percent elongation of a tensile specimen is usually regarded as a measure of superplasticity. However, little attention has been given to the fact that total elongation is also a function of specimen diameter and gage length, even though the importance of geometry has long been recognized in the tensile testing of materials in which elongations are relatively small.* In the present study, the effect on superplas- tic extension of the ratio of specimen diameter to length was investigated and an analysis was made of strain distribution along the gage length. Superplastic alloys are characterized by having a flow stress sensitive to strain rate but relatively insensitive to strain.2"' In an earlier study,5 it was found that the strain-rate sensitivity of several low-alloy steels changed during the test and that the minimum value correlated best with total elongation. In the present study, the variation of strain-rate sensitivity during the straining of a lead-tin alloy was investigated. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Lead-tin eutectic alloy (32 pct Pb 68 pct Sn), made from high-purity lead and tin, was cast in the form of 1-in. diam rod. The rod was cold-rolled in stages to 0.25 in. diam and then swaged to 0.125 in. diam. Samples were cut from the rod at various stages of the mechanical working process. Tensile test specimens were then made by attaching threaded steel ends to the rods by an epoxy-base thermosetting adhesive which required a setting treatment of 2 days at room temperature. The rods were seated in the steel ends in holes approximately 0.01 in. oversize. The test pieces thus made were of various diameters and gage lengths. These were stored at a temperature of about -70°C (-94°F) until required for testing. The distribution of strain along the gage length of a specimen was determined at various stages of the tensile test. The lead-tin alloy was superplastic at room temperature and direct observations during testing were simple. The gage length was divided by reference marks into five initially equal units. These reference marks were made with ink and were reinforced during the test when the initial marks became faint. Photographs were taken, at intervals, of the deforming specimen and measurements of the elongation in each of the gage units were made on these photographs. Tests were also done on several superplastic low-alloy steels whose properties were described earlier.5 The chemical compositions of these steels are given in Table I. A diagram of the notched tensile specimen used in the steel tests is shown in Fig. 1. The specimens were tested at 900°C (1650°F) in a furnace through which a mixture of He + 2 pct H was continuously circulated.5 RESULTS Strain Distribution. Gardner[$] THE present known petroleum reserves are limited, and unless important new fields are discovered the Nation will be dependent, in the not too distant future, upon imports or upon synthetic liquid fuels to supplement domestic petroleum supplies. As a national defense measure, it would appear desirable to develop a substitute source of liquid fuels within the borders of the country if new discoveries of petroleum should prove disappointing. Congress undoubtedly had this in mind when it passed the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act (78th Congress, approved April 5, 1944). The act directed the Bureau of Mines to construct and operate demonstration plants for producing synthetic liquid fuels from coal and oil shale, and from forestry and agricultural products. As a part of this program, the Bureau of Mines has built a demonstration plant at Anvil Points, near Rifle, Colo., for retorting the oil shale, and has developed a mine to supply the plant with oil shale. At the beginning of mining operations, the physical qualities of the oil shale, which would have a bearing upon the selection of mining methods and practices for exploiting the deposits, were largely unknown. A comprehensive mining-research program has been set up to determine the best methods and practices to follow to obtain the lowest overall practicable mining cost for producing the oil shale on a large scale. Unusually low mining costs will be necessary for shale oil to be produced commercially. Consideration now is being given to exploiting a series of flat-lying beds 70 ft thick by a room-and-pillar method of three benches with the advance heading at the top. This report is one of a series giving the results obtained in research on mining problems. INTRODUCTION The structure and physical qualities of the oil shale indicate that the 70-ft interval of the oil-shale measure can be safely mined in open stopes; studies indicate that this method would be the most economical one to use.1 As labor will be a major item of expense, the largest equipment that could be operated efficiently in the workings would be required to obtain the lowest practicable mining cost. It was therefore desirable to know the maximum safe span of unsupported rooms and the size of pillars necessary to support the overburden. This paper describes the work done at the Columbia School of Mines Barodynamic Laboratory in determining the maximum safe unsupported roof spans and the minimum safe pillar dimensions for the oil-shale mine at Rifle, Colo.

Under a cooperative agreement between United States Bureau of Mines and the Truax-Traer Coal Company, some operating-scale experiments have been made with the cyclone thickener in the preparation plant of the Shamrock No. 1 mine at Kayford, West Virginia. These tests were made with a 14-in. cyclone of the type developed by the Dutch State Mines in Limburg. It was applied experimentally to the thickening of solids in washery water to obtain performance data to show the range of sizes that may be recovered and other operating characteristics that would indicate the field of usefulness of this device in coal preparation practice. This is a progress report only. It covers results obtained in a series of 17 tests of the operation of what has been considered a unit of commercial size operating on suspensions of fine coal mixed with a relatively small amount of free impurities. The underflow material, after further dewatering in centrifuges, is a marketable grade of coal. The coal at Shamrock No. 1 is mined from the No. 2 Gas seam. It is made up essentially of a low ash coal suitable for byproduct use with one or more bands of splint coal of higher ash content suitable for industrial fuel. The washing plant was installed for the two-fold purpose of removing the free impurities incident to mechanized mining and to separate the run of mine coal into the two types. To accomplish these results it is necessary to make a separation at a specific gravity of about 1.4 to recover the byproduct coal and to separate the splint coal from refuse at a higher gravity. The coarse coal section of the washing plant was put into service about 10 months before the fine coal section was completed. Inadequate screening capacity in the raw coal preparation plant resulted in a portion of the fine coal being fed to the jigs. No provision for preliminary dedusting of the raw coal feed was incorporated in the design. Under the conditions in the initial operating period, separation at the desired lower gravity was not realized, apparently because of the presence of an excessive amount of fine solids in suspension in the wash water. Difficulty in wetting the fine coal may also have been a contributing factor. Additional facilities for the removal of the fine solids from the wash water was indicated. Information then available on the Driessen cone for this purpose was studied and a cooperative agreement with the Bureau of Mines for experimental work with a unit of standard size as developed by the Dutch State Mines was arranged. IN order to make his work easier, every master of any art whatever keeps always to the road that he has learned or that his skill or good judgment has shown him to be the best. Although there are various methods used in making moulds for guns, depending on whether they are large or small, nevertheless almost the same road is traveled in all. You must first know that it is necessary to make a pattern of wood or clay exactly as the gun is to be, with those ornaments of cornices and rings that you wish to be in the bronze. Let us suppose that you wish this pattern to be of wood. You must try to have for this a piece of fir as long and thick as you wish, dry, solid, and well seasoned, with few or no knots if possible. This should be longer than the gun by the length of the head and foot rests where it is pivoted [83v] so that it can be turned as on a lathe. On the end where the mouth is to be it should project out enough so that you can attach a feeding head at the top of the casting. You can make or have this pattern made round, fluted, spiral, or half fluted, as you like best, making the measurements exactly correct with all care and attention. Then two bearing trestles must be fixed firmly in the ground, one at the head and one at the foot, as is usually done with roasting spits and as you see drawn here. This done, if it is fluted, put the cornice pieces at the place where you wish the mouth to be and at the foot where the fire is applied. These are

Abstract- The use of a unique class of sulfhydryl collectors, the monoalkyldithiocarbamate salts ([RNHCS]) as direct collectors for malachite and azurite is presented. Microflotation and laboratory scale flotation tests were performed to define the collector properties of these reagents under a variety of flotation conditions. On the basis of the results, it is proposed that some property of the amine-hydrogen atom in the reagent has a significant influence on the unusual activity of these collectors for oxide copper minerals.
