[ ] IN 1880, an electric arc was struck over metal for the first time to experiment with controllable melting. The glare of this arc has reflected on the stacks of the steel industry and continued to light the path of steelmakers in their never ending quest -for faster, more economical, and better ways of producing steel. William Siemens is credited with first employing the electric arc to melt metal in a closed hearth and produce basic metallurgical reactions. By the turn of the century, an Italian, named Stassano, was experimenting with ore reduction by the electric arc. In 1899, Dr. Paul Heroult, in France, used the direct arc principle for producing ferro-chromium. His experiments quickly led him to develop a dosed-top arc furnace for the production of steel, and his first commercial shipment was recorded in December, 1900. American steelmakers, quick to sense the possibilities of this method of melting, invited Heroult to our shores, where, in 1905, he was responsible for installing the first arc furnace on the North American continent. This furnace, at Sault Ste. Marie, was built for ore reduction. But Charles Holcomb, founder of Holcomb Steel. Co. of Syracuse, N. Y. contacted Heroult in 1905 and contracted for the first American direct-arc electric furnace for steelmaking. On April 5, 1906, the first heat was tapped from this 3-ton unit. The furnace was basic lined and powered by a single-phase, 500 kw generator, -producing high amperage at low voltage. It is interesting to note that, although the first few heats were made with cold charges, subsequent heats were duplexed. R. H. Bully, first superintendent of Holcomb Steel, persuaded the directors to purchase the unit to effect a more economical and efficient means of making tool steel by duplexing prime melting in a combustion fired furnace, and transfer of hot metal to the arc furnace for temperature adjusting, refining, and adding carbon and alloying elements. Today, duplexing is foreseen by some as the steelmaking process of the future. The promise shown by America's first arc furnace for ingot production quickly led to the purchase of a similar unit by The Firth Sterling Steel Co., in 1909, and to the purchase of the first arc furnace for production of steel castings, by the Treadwell Engineering Co., in 1911. From its humble start in 1906, production of arc furnace steel has never ceased to increase its yearly percentage of total steel production in the U. S., although certain other methods have declined or almost disappeared. By its ability to be used intermittently, the arc furnace gained favor and enhanced its reputation during depression days. When the attack on Pearl Harbor plunged us headlong into the long days of World War II, the arc furnace stood ready, flexible enough to be overburdened hearth wise 30 pct and power wise 25 pct, pouring its endless flood of alloy for the guns, tanks, ships, and planes which ultimately brought victory. During the post war boom, the now, proven virtues of low initial cost, faster installation, better yield, improved availability, and lower operating cost, enabled industry-particularly the small, new, independent producers-to locate strategically and profitably to meet the demand of an America that had been starved for new homes, appliances, cars, and highways. In the Korean police action, the arc furnace again proved itself by providing the latest alloys metallurgists could develop to meet the demands that the jet age and the innovations of guided missiles required. In today's peacetime prosperity, the arc furnace is continuing to provide the economic flexibility required to meet an ever increasing demand for better steel in the face of mounting costs, scrap shortages, and pressure toward decentralized location of industry.

Preamble At the present time many bodies are engaged in -the formulation of standards. There is no uniformity in the rules for such procedure in the different organizations; in some cases the committees engaged in the work are not fully representative, and in. a considerable proportion of cases they do not consult all of the allied interests. The present custom results in a considerable duplication of work, and in some fields several "standards" are proposed for the same thing, differing from one another only slightly and often in unimportant details. It is very much more difficult to obtain agreement between the proposers of overlapping standards after they have been published than it would be to get the proposers to agree before they had committed themselves publicly. The American Institute of Electrical Engineers, the American Institute of Mining Engineers, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the American Society for Testing Materials have appointed a committee to consider the advisability of cooperating in engineering standardization. This committee recommends that these societies form a permanent organization by appointing a committee as proposed in the following constitution and rules of procedure to carry on this very important work.

SEPARATION of minerals by froth flotation is rightly called an art. It can truthfully be said that no two ores separate in the same way. The difference in results obtained when natural and synthetic mixtures of minerals are separated is so great that such tests frequently have been worthless in attempting to select conditions in which a natural mixture will separate. With a few rare exceptions, the natural mixture is much more difficult to treat than a synthetic mixture, and a much poorer separation is obtained. Perhaps several experimenters have wondered why 10 or 20 per cent of a mineral being floated from an ore does not float and is different from the 90 or 80 per cent that is recovered. In experimental tests on pure sphalerite, observers1 have noted that varying amounts of sphaIerite may be froth-floated with pine oil alone, the amount recovered in the froth depending apparently upon the source of the sulphide. The only explanation of results such as these, barring insufficiency of frother or time of flotation, is that the surface of the mineral floated is different from that of the mineral depressed. This difference often has been found to be caused by natural contamination of mineral surfaces, apparently brought about by weathering and exposure to natural solutions. There is virtually no rock that is absolutely unweathered. One of the writers had an exceedingly instructive experience in 1931 while working with United Verde copper-zinc iron sulphide ore in Arizona. Nonselective flotation of chalcopyrite and sphalerite away from some of the pyrite was all that could be accomplished. All known depressants produced only slight effect. (written discussion?).-As the die-casting process is so very different in character from the process of making sand molds, it is often considered that entirely different methods of pouring, gating, venting, etc. should be used. There is really, however, no essential difference in the making of (lie castings and sand castings, and similar methods should be used in each process. In the matter of gating, the metal should be introduced at a central point, as nearly as possible, so that it will have an equal distance to flow from the point of entrance to the most distant points of the mold. This will cause a uniform rate of congealing of the casting and prevent streaks and cold shuts. The venting should be done in such a way that a free exit of the air in the molds can occur. It should be less difficult to take care of the venting of a die-casting mold than to vent an ordinary sand mold. In the case of a sand mold, the venting is left, to a considerable extent, to the judgment of the molder, and it is possible that no two molds will be vented in a similar manner. Further than this, after a vent has been made in a sand mold, it may become clogged by the sand and for this reason be inefficient. There is also quite a variation in the pressure of the metal entering a sand mold, due to varying heights of the pouring gate. In a die-casting mold these factors can be controlled more closely. The vents should be so disposed that the air in the mold compressed by the entrance of the metal may be able to leave the mold at a uniform rate and by exits located symmetrically. These exits are made quite small on molds at first, as they can he easily enlarged if necessary, and they are tapered so that a free flow is guaranteed without danger of the metal spurting out from the die. Uniformity of pressure of the metal as it enters the mold is very important and, as the pressure is mechanically applied, its control is not difficult. It is true that a sand mold has much less of a chilling effect on the metal poured into it than has the die-casting mold, but, outside of this point, there is a great similarity between the die-casting process and the process of making castings in sand folds. It is suggested that much would be gained by regarding these two processes as not essentially different.

The term "modern automatic baghouses" as used in the title of this paper is intended to designate a general type of mechanical fume filter, introduced some 20 years ago and gradually improved since that time. It is characterized by its small filtering bags, enclosed in groups of 15 to 30 in steel compartments, and by its frequency of shaking, as compared to the old type of baghouse, which uses much larger bags, shaken at much longer intervals. Automatic baghouses are produced by a number of well-known manufacturers. Some recently constructed baghouses of the old type have embodied some of the principles of the automatic type, in that they are divided into several compartments, with separate fans for the different compartments, and flue headers arranged so that when the fan to any one compartment is shut down preparatory to shaking the bags in that compartment, the bags are put under suction by the draft from the other fans, thus making possible more efficient cleaning of the bags. These baghouses have motor-driven shaking mechanisms, and generally are operated under higher pressure and shaken at more frequent intervals than was the practice with the old style baghouse, and consequently have greater filtering capacity per unit of bag area. It is possible to interconnect the fan motors and the motors driving the bag-shaking mechanism, with suitable relays and timing devices, so that the operation of this type of baghouse also becomes to a considerable extent automatic. These baghouses are intermediate between the old style of baghouses, strictly speaking, and the completely automatic baghouses. They may he considered just as modern as the latter, and their proponents can no doubt cite many advantages for them. The authors are less familiar with them than with other types, and the following discussion will be limited to a comparison of the automatic baghouses and old style baghouses, with particular reference to the experience of The Eagle-Picher Lead Co. and The Eagle-Picher Mining and Smelting Company.

AT the Annual Meeting of the A.1.M.E. last February, Cornelius F. Kelley, chairman of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., was presented with the Charles F. Rand Memorial Medal for "conspicuous success as administrative head of great enter- prises engaged in the production of nonferrous metals at home and abroad; for inspiring leadership of an organization that has trained able engineers for service wherever ores are mined and metals are recovered; and for enhancing the prestige of metal mining in the financial and industrial world." Mr. Kelley's acceptance speech follows: I am not unmindful of the fact that the distinction is not to be considered a personal one, but that by the language of the citation itself it is rather a recognition of the service that has been performed by the many trained men of an industrial organization that in the arts of mining and metallurgy and in the fabrication of metal products has performed a distinct service to the industry and to mankind. In that spirit, the award is accepted, and on behalf of the organization I represent and myself, I thank you and assure you that the honor is deeply appreciated.

One aspect of ocean mining that is frequently overlooked in discussions is the problem of establishing some form of legal control over the seas. Much of the discussion centers on mining in territorial waters, which are controlled by the various countries according to the Geneva Convention on the Continental Shelf, and perhaps by political subdivisions of countries such as the individual states of the U.S. But as technology improves and the mining of deeper waters becomes feasible, the problem of rights outside the continental shelf and territorial waters becomes a significant factor for anyone expending the time and capital for development. Several schemes are possible for regulating ocean mining but as yet none have been instituted, except what might be termed the "wait and see" approach. Even some of the coastal states in the U.S. have no regulations governing mining in the territorial waters under their jurisdiction. Until some regulation is formulated, there may well be little development in ocean mining due to the high risk of capital involved, both with respect to companies wishing to invest their own funds and financial institutions funding a venture to develop offshore mineral deposits.

INTRODUCTION DURING the last decade no topic has created more interest or received more thought among blast-furnace men than colic. One reason for this is, undoubtedly, the remarkable increase in the use of byproduct coke. Formerly our coke was made at a distance from the furnaces and by a distinct organization. There was little cooperation or development possible under these conditions. Today the situation is greatly changed. Much of our coke is made by the organization operating the furnaces and the coke oven is operated with the primary object of obtaining the best results in the blast furnace. The effect of changing the method of coke manufacture, even in some minor detail, is often felt almost immediately at the blast furnace. There naturally results one of the most valuable assets of the byproduct coke oven, -i.e., the possibility of increased blast-furnace efficiency clue to close observance and correct operation of the ovens. The results are evident, but it often is difficult correctly to account for them. In attacking the solution of a problem of as much importance as why one coke is better than another, there are facts which should be kept clearly in mind The author hopes, in this paper, to bring out some points relative to the use of carbon in the blast furnace which will be of value in solving this question.

Oil-field activities in Oklahoma made 1936 the best year since 1930. Approximately 2800 wells were completed, an increase of about 20 per cent over 1935. Purchasers' reports filed with the Corporation Commission showed a total of 200,240,252 bbl. of oil purchased from leases in 1936. The assembly of a complete table of the oil fields of the state was not achieved, as many of the early records of operators and pipe-line companies are not complete, and data for the older fields will perhaps never be fully tabulated. Table 1 includes all of the new fields and most of the important fields of the State of Oklahoma. The outstanding developments of the year were: the discovery of rich Wilcox-sand production in the Moore pool; the spectacular drilling campaign in the Capitol or Mansion extension in the Oklahoma City pool; the surprising extension of the Olympic pool and the Hunton lime zone in the Fitts pool; and the failure to find more Ordovician production in southern Oklahoma. Wildcat discoveries, which were on a par with 1935, resulted in the discovery of such promising pools as Billings-Wilcox, North Bethel, North Earlsboro and North Lucien. The Fitts-Upper Simpson, Edmond, Jesse, Keokuk Falls and South Burbank pools underwent considerable development. Fitts Pool.—The Fitts area in Pontotoc County was greatly extended during the year and was the leader in drilling activity in the state. The producing limits were pushed to the east and north and the development of the Hunton lime horizon was outstanding. In the Upper Simpson zone 162 wells were completed; 137 in the Hunton lime zone and 26 in the Wilcox zone. The Oil Creek zone, a sand body below the Wilcox member, was discovered by the Magnolia-Statler No. 3 well located in the 1/4. 1/4 of sec. 28-2N.-7E. Moore Pool.—The Moore pool, in Cleveland County, which was opened in 1935 by the Sinclair Prairie-Franklin Community No. 1 well, surprised the oil industry when the Sinclair Prairie-Marvel No. 1 well, on Apr. 1, 1936, discovered a rich body of Wilcox sand below the distillate

The published phase diagrams for the copper-zirconium system1,2 indicate that the solid solubility of zirconium in copper is not accurately known. Studies made on relatively impure alloys by Pogodin, Shumova, and Kugucheva3 yielded a maximum solubility value of 1 wt pct Zr at the eutectic temperature. Allibone and sykes5 reported that an as-cast 0.2 wt pct Zr alloy is single phase at room temperature. Limited results obtained by Raub and Enge14 indicated that zirconium solubility in copper is less than 0.13 wt pct Zr at 940°C. Tn 1960, on the basis of a microstructural examination of several copper-rich Cu-Zr alloys, saarivirta6 placed the maximum solubility of zirconium in copper at 0.15 wt pct at the eutectic temperature, 980°C. The present note describes results obtained during a re-investigation of the Cu-Zr system for the purpose of accurately establishing the solidus and solvus curves and the eutectic temperature in copper-rich alloys. High-purity copper (99.99 pet) and zirconium (99.64 pet) consolidated reactor grade sponge were used to prepare several alloys, containing up to 2 wt pct Zr, by induction melting in graphite crucibles in vacuum and chill casting into a split steel mold. The melting procedure consisted of first melting the copper charge and then adding the bulk zirconium wrapped in pure copper foil. Chemical analyses were made of both the cold-rolled alloy ingots after homogenization at 925°C for 450 hr in evacuated quartz capsules and of small specimens which had been used in the phase diagram studies. 'The carbon content of each alloy was also determined and was found to be less than 0.001 wt pct in every case. Metallographic and electrical resistivity measurements were used as the primary methods for this investigation, although some thermal analysis studies were also performed. Heat treatments of all the alloys were carried out with the specimens wrapped in molybdenum or alloy foil (of the same composition as the specimen) and sealed in quartz tubes either in vacuum or under a purified helium atmosphere. Following high-temperature anneals for long periods of time, slight depletion of zirconium from the specimen surface was observed. Therefore, careful preparation of samples for microscopic examination and chemical analysis of the samples themselves was necessary to check the composition of samples used in determining phase boundaries. Points on the solvus curve were determined on quenched specimens by both isothermal reaction after solution heat treatment at 950°C for 8 hr and by isothermal annealing of alloy specimens at successively higher temperatures for times ranging from 24 to 500 hr. The formation of austenite from ferrite, ferrite plus retastable carbide, spheroidite, and pearlite has been studied in a series of irons, Fe-C alloys, and plain-carbon steels using fast heating techniques. In the absence of carbide, austenite nucleates at ferrite/ferrite grain boundaries; nucleation is followed by the rapid growth characteristic of a massive transfornation. The trarnsformation occurs at 950°C at heating rates of 106º C per sec and cannot be suppressed. Metastable carbide dissolves before austenite forms and does not influence the transformation kinetics. For spheroidite structures, austenite nucleates preferentially at the jinction between carbides and ferrite grain boundaries. Growth from these centers proceeds until the carbide is completely enveloped; subsequent growth occurs by carbon diffusion through the austenite envelope. For pearlite structures, austenite nucleates preferentially at pearlite colony intersections. Carbide la)?zellae dissolve at the advancing austenite interface but complete solution of carbide does not occur; the residtial carbide is eventually dissolvled or spheroid-ized depending on the carbon cuntent. The magnitude and temperature dependence of the austenite growth rate into Fe-C pearlite when incomplete carbide dissolution is assumed are satisfactorily explained by an approximate colume diffusion model. The impurities present in plain-carbon steel reduce the growth rate of austenite in comparison to that jound in an Fe-C alloy. The formation of austenite has been studied in much less detail than the decomposition of austenite. This is primarily a result of the importance of harden-ability in determining the mechanical properties of steel. Recently, more interest in the kinetics of austenite formation has resulted from the discovery by Grange1 that rapid heating techniques strengthen steel by refining the austenite grain size. Although the strengthening effect is not large, it is accompanied by no loss in ductility. In addition, interest continues in rapid heat treatment of low-carbon steel sheet for tin plate applications.2,3 Among the few systematic studies of austenite formation are the early work of Roberts and Mehl4 on formation of austenite from pearlite and recent work of Molinder5 and of Judd and paxton6 on formation of austenite from spheroidite. Also, Boedtker and Duwez7 and Haworth and paar8 have recently studied the formation of austenite from ferrite in relatively pure iron, Kidin et al.9,10 have studied the formation of austenite in 8 pct Cr steels, and Paxton has recently discussed various aspects of austenite formation in steels." The present work was undertaken to determine the kinetics of austenite formation for a variety of starting structures including ferrite, ferrite plus metastable carbide, ferrite plus spheroidal cementite, and ferrite plus pearlitic cementite. Emphasis was placed on determining the active sites for austenite nucleation, determining the temperature and time range of austenite formation, and in the case of pearlite a careful study of the growth rate of austenite was made in the absence and presence of impurities. By using a variety of heating techniques including laser-pulse heating, it has been possible to study austenite formation in an isothermal fashion over a wide range of temperatures. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys studied in the present work are a zone-refined iron with 4 pprn C, an Fe-C alloy with 130 pprn C, 2 Fe-C alloys with 0.77 and 0.96 wt pct C, and a plain carbon steel with 0.96 wt pct C. The zone-refined iron and Fe-C alloys contained 60 pprn and 200 pprn total substitutional impurities, respectively. The plain carbon steel contained 2400 pprn Si, 2000 pprn Mn, and 900 pprn Cr. Various heat treatments were given to these alloys to produce different starting structures of equiaxed ferrite, ferrite plus metastable carbide, fine pearlite, and spheroidite. These heat treatments are given in Table I. A wide range of heating rates were employed in this work because many of the reactions occur so quickly at temperatures in the austenite range that they are completed during the initial heating cycle unless very fast heating rates are used. Essentially the same heating techniques employed by Speich et a1.12 and Speich and Fisher13 were used in this work. For time intervals of 2 sec to 20 hr, simple hand immersion of 0.010-in. thick specimens in a Pb-Bi bath was employed. These specimens were quenched in a 10 pct NaC1, 2 pct NaOH aqueous bath. For time intervals of 100 m-sec to 2 sec, an automatic dunking and quenching device was employed with 0.002-in. thick specimens. Again, liquid Pb-Bi baths were used for a heating medium but now helium gas quenching was employed. For time intervals of 2 to 100 m-sec a laser heating device was employed with 0.002-in. thick specimens; a helium plus fine water-droplet spray was now used for quenching. Additional information on heating times shorter than 2 m-sec was obtained by study of the zones around the centrally heated laser spot. Here diffusion of heat from the centrally heated zone raises the temperature of the specimen locally to all temperatures between ambient and the peak temperature, but for times of the order of microseconds. Two Opposed Interpretations of the Tonopah Structure.-The important geological publications concerning the Tonopah mining-district are those of Spurr 1 and of Burgess.2 In these publications are presented fundamental differences of interpretation, which are the more interesting because both authorities have had ample opportunity for observation, and because both are geologists of proved ability. I was vastly puzzled to know which had the better of it, and in order that I might reach a conclusion in my own mind, I recently spent some time in the district going over the physical evidence. Surprising as it may seem, this evidence looks agreeably conclusive. A review of it will, I believe, be of interest to those who are familiar with the previous publications. The general geological features of Tonopah are shown in Fig. 1, and the differences of interpretation referred to are outlined in the accompanying notes. Briefly, Burgess regards the various rocks as flows, lying in the order of their deposition. Spurr regards them in part as flows, and in part as flat-lying intrusives. The disagreement, then, concerns the rocks regarded on the one hand as intrusives, and, on the other hand, as flows. These rocks are chiefly the so-called calcitic andesite, the upper rhyolite, and the lower rhyolite. This paper describes experiments carried on at the Case School of Applied Science, together with their results. Their success led to the design of the larger furnace herein described, but which has not been built. A PREVIOUS article' by the authors contained a general description of the new roasting furnace herein described but it did not go into detail as to the metallurgical behavior or the results obtained. Believing that such information would be of great value, they have elaborated on the subject and have given many unpublished details. The furnace described applies the principle of roasting finely divided zinc-sulfide ores, now produced in large quantity by the flotation process, in gaseous suspension; that is, the ore particles are carried, in suspension, in a current of air and gaseous products of the roast. The relatively great fineness of flotation concentrate presents difficulties and problems of roasting in furnaces of the ordinary type; the fine ore is forwarded through the furnace in the form of a shallow bed and its very fineness leads to dense impervious bedding which prevents oxygen from reaching the interior of the bed, thus unduly lengthening the time of roasting and preventing the elimination of the last of the sulfur. The fineness of the concentrate, normally, should lead to a rapid and complete roast, for the speed of roasting is a function of the surface exposed to oxygen, which surface is greatest, per unit of weight, in very fine material. The difficulty in bed roasting is to get the oxygen to the particle. If the fine ore, during the roasting, could be freely suspended in oxidizing gases, full advantage could be taken of the great surface conferred by its fineness. This fundamental idea, of course, is not new, for the Stedtefelt furnace, familiar to the older metallurgists, is an example of it; but the manner in which this is accomplished may be new.

THE importance of ladle and teeming practice and its relationship to the yield and quality of the product has focused considerable attention on this phase of open-hearth operation. Inherently bad steel cannot be perfected by manipulation during teeming, but through the proper handling of "off heats" serious losses, which in many cases arise, can be greatly minimized. Conversely, good steel can be ruined as a result of poor workmanship in the pit, and rendered unsuitable for application to orders where exacting surface and physical requirements are essential. Sufficient evidence has been secured to warrant careful investigation of pit operations when an abnormal number of basic defects develop in the semifinished product or are found on the inspection table. This paper is written from the standpoint of the problems involved in making satisfactory ingots for sheet rolling. Furthermore, since rimming steel is almost universally used for manufacture of sheet, the data presented herein refer particularly to that type of steel. Going back some 30 years in open-hearth history, the word "pit" properly described the hole into which the ladle was lowered to receive the metal tapped from the furnace. The working space was necessarily limited, and the disposal of slag and metal overflowing the ladle or lost because of breakouts presented a serious problem. The equipment, of course, was rather crude in the light of present-day development. Often no ladle stands were provided, the ladle being hung on the crane beneath the runner. When delayed taps occurred, the ladle was often held in position for many hours, thus tying tip pit operations and causing delays to adjacent furnaces. Because of crowded conditions, slag thimbles were not used and a network of cast-steel triangles and old tapping bars, placed before the heat was tapped, was the means for removing slag from the hole. A MARKED peculiarity of most of the smelting-works of the Far West is the looseness with which accounts of the operations are kept. Indeed, probably over half of the works do not keep any detailed accounts at all, the yearly gross statement of profit or loss being considered sufficient for all purposes. The reasons for this must apparently be sought in the as yet unsettled state of all business relations, and in the deplorable fact that only in isolated cases educated metallurgists are in charge of the smelting-works. Continual and regular assays of the ores, by-products, and slags, are almost unknown, so that it is impracticable to ascertain, even approximately, the losses in the smelting processes. Of cases where regular accounts are kept of the quantities of ore smelted, of the composition of charges, and of the fuel consumed, I know only two or three. Under these circumstances it is extremely difficult to collect figures which cover the operations for a considerable length of time, and which are so valuable for the metallurgist, who wishes to get an insight into the economy of smelting operations, as shown by practice. Figures obtained by personal observation, which can of course cover only the brief space of the visit of the travelling metallurgist, must, therefore, be made to replace the more valuable data. The writer has had occasion, during the last and the preceding summer, to visit the larger number of the Western lead-smelting works, and offers, in the following pages, such data relating to the economy of lead-smelting in the blast furnace at various works, as he has been able to obtain. The only object in doing so is to place these figures on record, so that they may be from time to time supplemented with other data, which are now wanting. I. I ask your permission to speak about a matter which is not of a specifically scientific nature, but more of a general—I might even say of an international—nature, and the international character which this city now presents must be my justification for introducing it. The Germans, very often, are thought to be an exceedingly warlike people, but I come to-day in the capacity of a peacemaker. Our German language is an original language; it is, therefore, a language in which it is impossible to change the meaning of a word at will. It may be, perhaps, easier in a combined language, as the English, to associate and to exchange meanings. Now, a word which we hear a great deal at the present day, is "Stahl," in English, "steel." This word means, in the German language, a substance which can be hardened. As the German literature, in relation to metallurgy, is the oldest of the modern world, this circumstance may give the German a right to ask for consideration. But I think, now, when the four languages, German, Swedish, French, and English, compete in rich metallurgical literature, it is very necessary to have uniformity in the nomenclature of iron, which would prove not only useful for science, but equally so for trade. For that purpose I propose to make the divisions of iron so that the word steel shall comprise a subdivision and not a primary division as formerly. Nature furnishes us iron mostly in the state of oxides, and if in any other condition, we must convert the ore into oxide before we can make iron. The oxides are always mixed with certain earthy substances called rock or gangue. The extraction of iron involves, therefore, the twofold process of the reduction of the iron, and imparting to it the amount of carbon necessary for technical purposes, and the separation of the reduced and carburized iron from the gangue. The reduction is always effected by carbon or carbonaceous substances (coke, anthracite, carbonic oxide, etc.), and the result is, according to the degree of heat employed, either malleable iron or a non-malleable iron. The process of malting malleable iron in this way is called, generally, the direct process—in German, Rennarbeit. It produces the iron in a solid state with a fluid cinder. By this process our ancestors made all their iron, and it has been revived in various ways in modern times up to the process of Mr. Blair, so far as I know, always without commercial success. The

In the manufacture of sulfuric acid from SO2 bearing gases, the presence of mercury vapor in the gases may lead to unacceptably high mercury levels in product acid. Anticipating inception of regulations requiring low mercury acid, St. Joe Minerals Corporation and Toho Zinc Company, Ltd. independently developed new mercury removal technology. The processes may be used individually or in combination, depending upon the mercury content of the SO2 gases and the required mercury level in acid, for efficient control of maximum mercury levels in sulfuric acid. The St. Joe B Process removes mercury from roaster off-gas streams, while Toho’s NAK Process precipitates Hg from concentrated sulfuric acid. The combined process is commercially operated at St. Joe's zinc smelter in Monaca, Pennsylvania, and the NAK Process at Toho’s Chigirishima lead smelter and Onahama zinc roasting plant in Japan. Product acid mercury levels of 0.5 mg/kg are economically achieved.

Although it has been apparent to me for a long time that too great weight was currently given to the silicon-contents of foundry-iron, and that the theory of the control by silicon of the carbon-contents of cast-iron is unsound, or that, at best, the influence of silicon is too small to be of much practical value as a guide in foundry-work, it never seemed to me desirable to enter the lists against either the " silicon-fad " or the theory, for the reason that I had neither the time nor the facilities to prove my position, nor any better theory to offer. But since Mr. Summers has taken the step, it seems but right that I should give such facts as are at hand in support of his contention. At the same time I do not think these are enough to prove the case if the contrary proposition were not itself, as it seems to me, based on insufficient evidence. Both Keep's and Turner's conclusions seem to be drawn from irons carrying less than the normal amount of carbon; Turner's " base " being, moreover, a steel rather than a pig-iron, and both the white base and the ferro-silicon of Keep being so low in carbon that compounds of them would not give a material approaching the carbon-contents of a normal casting, and having, therefore, little value as showing the effects of silicon on foundry-irons, even if his samples were treated under the same conditions as those to which pig-metal is subjected in making castings.

This paper addresses some of the financial risk hedging mechanisms available to a corporation contemplating entering the mining business at a significant level of investment. The approach which I have adopted is that of a case study relating to the risk hedging aspects of Brascan Limited's acquisition of 46% of Noranda Inc., formerly Noranda Mines Limited, followed by some remarks on options open to mining companies for reducing financial risks. To appreciate the rationale for Brascan committing over (Can.) $800 million to the natural resource sector, some knowledge of Brascan's parent company, Edper Investments Ltd., is required at the outset. Edper Investments, prior to acquiring a 48% interest in Brascan, controlled Trizec Corporation, one of the world's largest property companies. Edper also was involved in the financial services sector through Continental Bank of Canada and Hees International Corporation. For some considerable time prior to Edper's investment in Brascan, Edper felt a need to provide a better balance to its portfolio of property and financial services. Brascan was rich in cash, relatively unleveraged, and with important existing holdings in natural resources and consumer products. The acquisition of a controlling interest in Brascan provided an opportunity to balance Edper's portfolio of property and financial services with world class acquisitions in natural resources, supplemented by consumer products and financial services. The end result of Brascan's activities over the last few years is illustrated by the following analysis of the book value of Brascan's assets at the end of December 1983. The large emphasis on natural resources came about from the fact that for Canadians operating mainly in Canada, natural resources were attractive. In addition, the quality of Canada's reserves looked good to us. The polymetallic nature of many of Canada's orebodies offered a hedge against risk relating to any one metal. Put another way, the by-product metal credits offered a net operating cost advantage with respect to many of the metals mined. Our energy costs also appeared to provide Canada's natural resource industries with an advantage. We considered Canadian mining expertise as amongst the world's finest, as were the exploration equipment and technology developed in Canada. In addition, Canada offered a stable political climate and one we knew. Further, we felt the Canadian Government's future role in the industry would, on balance, be benign, partly because the Canadian content of the mining industry was very high in contrast to the petroleum industry. Granted, we could find cheaper sources of copper; however, to do so would involve venturing into regions where country risks were higher.

The growth of human knowledge is an evolutionary process. Historically our separate sciences came into existence as people became interested in various apparently unrelated domains of phenomena, and in this manner we acquired the sciences of physics, chemistry, astronomy, biology and geology. As various of these sciences became established, cognizance of them came to be taken by the universities and in this manner there arose the traditional departments of physics, astronomy, chemistry, biology and geology of our American universities. As there was no particular rationality in the boundaries separating the various sciences, in the university departments the jurisdiction of each has assumed quite arbitrary limits. In the domain of earth phenomena the first science to grow up was that of geology, which arose originally from the activities of the collectors of rocks, minerals and fossils. Thus geology evolved as a descriptive science dealing with directly observable terrestrial phenomena for which elementary rational explanations were offered. The traditional treatment of phenomena by the science of geology has rarely been with more than an elementary regard for the fact that these phenomena were also phenomena of physics and chemistry. Since the latter part of the nineteenth century, a new approach to terrestrial phenomena has been emerging and becoming of so great a significance that it can no longer be ignored. This approach has been made by people trained primarily in the sciences of physics and chemistry, who have investigated terrestrial phenomena as constituting phenomena of their respective sciences. In this manner we have acquired the so-called "borderland sciences" of geophysics, the physics of the earth, and of geochemistry, the chemistry of the earth. Neither of these fields is new, having arisen chiefly at the hands of European investigators during the latter part of the nineteenth century. The European universities have long since given official recognition at least to geophysics, by the establishment of departments or institutes of geophysics, which are on a par with the university departments of the other sciences.
