THE reduction of the firing of clay wares to a science has been one of the most difficult problems of modern ceramic engineering. The number of factors involved in the treatment of these wares has been such a complicated composite of the chemical and the physical properties that, according to the old practice, results depended rather on the art of the operator than on any scientific data available. The combined influence of the chemical and physical properties of clay minerals renders it difficult to apply the data obtained in one operation to the forecasting of details to be applied in another. In maturing clay-ware bodies by the application of heat, the chemical reactions involved are, in general, incomplete. The object frequently is to secure a certain physical quality, as density, color, or strength, rather than any particular chemical composition or development: This is more generally true of the so-called crude clay products. In the case of certain more high-grade wares, as the porcelains, it is necessary to reach the temperature required to bring about a certain molecular development or crystalline structure; but even here, time and temperature are at work and must be considered jointly. The conditions attending the firing of clay wares has led to the use of certain devices in the measurement of the progress of the firing process whereby the influence of the various burning factors on the clay composition under fire is indicated. In the simplest application of this practice, samples of the ware itself are so placed as to be drawn for observation at various intervals during the burn. Although the appearance is affected by the quick cooling treatment, by experience, this practice is successfully used, particularly in the brick industry. The settle of the setting of brick, as measured from the top of the kiln may also serve as a guide in the firing operation. Sodium sulfite as a zinc retarding agent in the selective Hotation of complex lead-zinc sulfide ores was discovered by the writer in the summer of 1919 in the testing laboratory of the U. S. Smelting, Refining & Mining Co.'s gravity concentrator at Midvalc. Utah. It proved to be the first reagent to give consistently good results in the laboratory on the cornpanj's Bingham ore. In December, 1919, C. A Lemke, concentrator superintendent, recommended that a flotation unit be added to the existing gravity mill to handle the mill slimes, using sodium sulfite as the zinc depressant Owing to the poor lead and zinc markets and the unfavorable royalty schedules offered by the Minerals Separation Co., the project fell through at this time. In 1921, a number of laboratory tests were made at Midvale. on other ores, among them ore from the Sunnyside mine at Eureka, Chlo. Both sodium and calcium sulfites were used with succcss on this ore. Early in 1923, further tests were made at Eureka, shortly after the Sunnyside company had resumed operations after a two-year shutdown. AS a consequence sodium sulfite was given a trial in the mill. The results showcd sufficient improvement over previous work as to warrant continuous use of this reagent in the lead circuit Exeept for a week or so in 1926 and for several weeks in April, 1927, when sodium cyanide and zinc sulfate were given trial runs in this mill. sodium sulfite has been used ever sinee.. Sodium sulfite was chosen rather than the calcim sulfite brcauscl of its gre1ater sollubility, making it possitdr. to introduee the reagent as a solutiun. The consumption of sodium sulfite in the Sunnyside mill varies from 1/4 to 12 lb per ton of ore, the smaller amount probably being nearer the average. Review of equipment, performance, and shaft design plans including head-frames for sinking and forms for lining are given. Also included are comparative data for shafts of 11 x20 ft and 193/4 x 30 ft with 756 and 666-ft depths, respectively. Advantage from curtain wall installation with "slip forms" which warrant consideration for normal lining are outlined. A preliminary review is also made of "chemical grouting" to stop water inflow leakage with Halliburton equipment and service. Two coal mine shafts recently completed in Franklin County, Ill., afford experience and accomplishment to warrant review. These shafts provide access to a tract with a potential recovery of one hundred million tons. This work provided the initial sinking by other than a contractor's organization since 1918. Four additional shafts required during the interim were sunk under contract arrangement with others. Supervisory contact and inspection afforded experience to govern planning and conduct of the recent work. TEST DRILLING Core test holes were drilled within each of the two shaft locations. Four additional cable tool holes were drilled on a radius of 700 ft from the shaft bottom to determine the coal seam elevations and govern the underground layout plans for each shaft. A graphic log of the hoist shaft test drillhole is shown by Fig. 1. A very soft sandstone was found at a depth of 16 ft. Cored recovery of the sandstone proved much weaker than the overlying compacted sand secured with coring facilities for soil recovery. Gradation from the very soft sandstone to fairly hard material occurred with the next 14 ft, extending to a depth of 30 ft. The weak character within the upper portion entailed need of adequate protection when sinking as described later. A part of the sandstone provided sufficient porosity and permeability to warrant further investigation. Adjacent cable tool drilling for temporary water supply disclosed inflow was limited to 2 gpm with a depth of 40 ft. It was increased to 12 gpm during the next 50 ft of drilling and occasioned subsequent precaution when sinking. General arrangement of facilities for sinking the hoist shaft is shown by Fig. 2. An available steel frame building was used to accommodate the hoist, compressor, shop, and shower or change room. The stiff leg derrick with 90-ft length of boom permitted removal of forms from the wood shop to the storage area or delivery within the shaft. Reinforcing steel and other needs were similarly handled, in addition to headframe erection. The headframe was placed over one end of the shaft to enable passage of forms for lining through the adjacent half next to the stiff leg derrick. T. Rosenqvist—The most interesting point in this paper is the observed transfer of iron into the slag in the initial stage of the desulphurization process, after which the iron again is reduced to the metallic state. The authors interpret this observation as showing that the sulphur enters the slag as an iron-sulphur compound which subsequently is decomposed by the slag. The present writer has previously suggested the following equation for the desulphurization process: S + O2- ? S2- + O For equilibrium in the blast furnace the oxygen potential is defined by equilibrium with graphite and CO of 1 atm pressure: C + O ? CO [2] During the desulphurization process the reactions proceed in the direction of the arrows. If one assumes eq 2 to be significantly slower than eq 1, the transfer of sulphur into the slag, in accordance with eq 1, will build up a local oxygen potential at the metal-slag interface very much higher than that corresponding to the value defined by eq 2. This is possible because the equilibrium oxygen potential in eq 1 is high as long as the sulphur content in the slag is low. This oxygen potential will again be able to oxidize some iron: Fe + O ? Fe2+ + O2- and an increase in the iron content of the slag will be observed. Adding up eqs 1 and 3 one obtains: S + Fe ? S2- + Fe2+ The net effect is thus in harmony with the experimental observation but is obtained without assuming any close ties between the sulphur and iron atoms during the process. Furthermore, it follows from eqs 1 and 2 that when the sulphur content in the slag increases, and equilibrium with C and CO is finally approached, the local oxygen potential at the metal-slag interface will decrease, and the iron in the slag will be reduced back into its metallic state. C. E. Sims-—The data and conclusions presented in this paper are thoroughly convincing in establishing the mechanism of sulphur transfer from iron to slag as in a blast furnace. The evolution of gaseous CO in step 3 of the reactions given on p. 1112 makes the process virtually irreversible. Assuming that the process is similar in slag-metal systems other than in the blast furnace, it is readily seen why free CaO and re-ducing conditions so greatly favor desulphurization. On the other hand, the very effective desulphurization obtained in oxidizing slags when strongly basic, must be attributed to the relatively high stability of CaS as compared to FeS. The ease and simplicity with which the reactions of classic chemistry agree with the experimental data and explain the mechanism is noteworthy. The concept of molecules of FeS, soluble in both phases (metallic iron is not soluble in the slag), migrating from the iron to the slag and there reacting with CaO, which is soluble only in the slag phase, is clear and uncomplicated. This is likewise true for step 3. Those who would deny the existence of molecules or molecular-type combinations in liquid iron, must strain to provide a mechanism so lucid. In the absence of molecules, the Fe and S exhibit a remarkable collusion. L. S. Darken—The investigation and interpretation of rate phenomena in the range of steelmaking temperatures is a difficult task. Most of the laboratory investigations of steelmaking reactions have been concerned with equilibrium. Having determined the equilibrium, our attention naturally focuses next on the mechanism and rate of approach to equilibrium. The authors seem to have contributed substantially to our understanding of these factors for the case of sulphur transfer. I should like to ask the authors whether they consider that the sulphur transfer reaction is diffusion controlled as many high-temperature reactions seem to be. If so, it would seem reasonable to suppose that the slow diffusion step of the process is the transfer across a pseudo-static layer or film similar to that considered in heat flow problems. As the diffusivity and fluidity are smaller for the slag than for the metal, it may tentatively be assumed that the sulphur gradient exists in a thin layer in the slag adjacent to the slag-metal interface and that the metal and the main mass of slag are each maintained uniform by convection. On this basis the amount of sulphur transferred across unit area per unit time is D p (?S%)/100 ?1, where D is the diffusivity, p the density, (?S%) the difference in percent sulphur on the two sides of the layer, and ?l is the layer thickness. At the beginning of the experiment the main body of the slag and hence one side of the layer contains no sulphur; therefore (?S%) may be replaced by (S%), the sulphur content of the slag at the slag-metal interface, which in turn is equal to L[S%] where [S%] is the sulphur content of the metal and L is the distribution coefficient. The rate of transfer thus becomes DpL[S%]/100 ?l, which the authors designate K[S%]. Equating these two quantities and setting D = 10-6 cm2 per sec, p = 3 g per cm3, L = 40, and K = lo-+ g cm-2 sec-1, it is found that ?l, the film thickness, is about 0.01 cm—a value of the order of magnitude of that found in heat transfer problems in liquids. The uncertainty of the numerical values used leaves much to be desired, but at least it can be said that this calculation tends to support the proposed model involving diffusion through a film. Although this does not seem to affect the general argument, I should like to call attention to the fact that the diffusivity3 of sulphur in hot metal is found (on conversion of units) to be about 10-4 cm2 per sec rather than 104 cm2 per sec as stated by the authors. The three equations written by the authors to express the steps in the overall process of sulphur transfer may alternatively be written ionically as only two Fe + S = Fe++ + S-- Fe++ + O-- + C (graphite or metal) = CO (gas) + Fe where the underscore is used to designate the metallic phase; ionic species are slag constituents. After the authors have so neatly demonstrated that iron and sulphur transfer together (at least initially), this fact seems almost self evident; from eq 4 it is seen that if sulphur acquires a negative charge during transfer

1. THE following is an abridgment of a recent report made by the author, covering an investigation of (A) The necessary use of natural-gas compressors; (B) The effect of gas compressors on natural-gas field operating conditions in Ohio, with special reference to the working pressure relations of gas wells of one company discharging by natural rock pressure flow without compressors, and adjacent wells of other companies, discharging into intake lines to gas-compressing stations. Tests were made at 107 different places in the counties of Fairfield, Licking and Knox, Ohio, which required 7,000 miles of automobile driving, and consumed 6 months' time. 2. A proper conception of. the necessary use and effect of natural-gas compressors in natural-gas production necessitates a clear understanding of certain fundamental definitions and judicial doctrines, which are given herein. 3. Gas is a fluid composed of a large number of molecules which are vehicles of energy continually in motion, and having an inherent. tendency to get farther and farther apart. The range of motion of the molecules is limited only by the volume of the closed containing vessel in which they constantly move to and fro. The most distinguishing characteristic of gas is its universal property of completely filling an inclosed space.

DURING a study of reactions involving iron sulfides, it became desirable to know approxi-mately the heat of decomposition of pyrite. The values given for the heats of formation of pyrite and ferrous sulfide are 35,500 calories and 23,070 calories respectively. For the reaction 2FeS2= 2FeS+S:, the heat effect would be-24,860 calories. But pyrite gives sulfur and pyrrhotite upon heating and the latter is a solid solution of sulfur in ferrous sulfide. The only meas-urements of this decomposition are those of Allen and Lombard1 of the Geophysical Laboratory who have measured dissociation pressures of both covellite and pyrite and have carefully reviewed the literature. They give a table of values for covellite as determined by Preuner and Brockmoller2 and by Wasjuchnowa3 and compare these values with their own measurements. The conclusion is that the measurements of Preuner and Brockmoller are seriously in error, while Was-juchnowa's values fit in well with those of Allen and Lombard. Wasjuchnowa's measurements were made by a dynamic method, while Allen and Lombard em-plowed a static method on both covellite and pyrite. Tables I and II reproduce the measurements of Wasjuchnowa and of Lombard and Allen on covellite and pyrite.

From L. K. Armstrong, Secretary of the Columbia Section of the Institute, we have received information as to the activities and plan of the Spokane Engineering and Technical Association, which was recently organized under the joint auspices of the local sections of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, the American Society of Civil Engineers, and our own Institute. The first meeting was held on September 20, at which a program for the following year was adopted. The, meeting was then conducted by the Civil Engineers., the principal business being the reading of a report by Mr. Flinn, Secretary of the United Engineering Society. The second meeting was held on October 18, of which the Columbia, Section of our Institute took charge. According to the program adopted, meetings will be held regularly on the third Friday of each month, except June, July and August. It is understood that these meetings shall not interfere with nor abridge the independent activity of the participating societies. The proposed work of the Association is to be conducted by a large number of committees, whose attention will be devoted to such subjects as the following: Municipal, Highways, Resources, Manufacture and Industries, Legislative, Educational, National and State, Patents and Inventions, Americanization, Safety and Rehabilitation, Research, Emergency. When all of these committees shall have been filled, and their work begun, it is expected that the engineers of Spokane and vicinity may take a more active part in things affecting human welfare in that vicinity.

THE importance of the pressing operation in the forming of articles by powder metallurgy depends to a great extent on the type of product to be made. While in some few cases the pressing is merely a means of compacting loose powder particles into a solid mass preliminary to a sintering treatment in most applications it constitutes a molding operation with the purpose of shaping the raw material in powder form into a certain predetermined, accurately defined part not altered in shape by sub- sequent sintering. In still other cases, no pressing at all but sintering in molds gives useful articles. A limited number of products are made by the simultaneous application of pressure and heat. The factors that control the product of the pressing operation are raw material, lubricant, type, size and shape of die and compact, magnitude and time of application of pressure, as well as temperature of pressing. All such factors need to be con- trolled; yet, depending on the function of the pressing operation, greater emphasis may be placed on processing factors other than the pressing operation. In any complete discussion of pressing, subsequent sintering cannot be disregarded. For the sake of brevity, the present paper has been limited to the mechanics of pressing and only occasionally refers to sintering. For the same reason, hot-pressing has been omitted as beyond the scope of this paper. In any survey of the literature on the pressing of metal powders, the 1938 paper of Balshin1 on the theory of the process of pressing deserves mention. The first attempts at an interpretation of pressing phenomena were made by Balshin1 and Rakovski.2 The experimental results of both are of great interest. Since the experimental results are not described, the work was repeated, using our own interpretation of the possible techniques, and is reported in the following pages. The basic theory of Balshin,1 based on a hydro- dynamic analogy, however, leads to but another way of plotting density and pres- sure against height of a pressed compact. Since it does not give any new insight into the phenomena, nor account for the influence of side-wall friction, a discussion of the theory has been omitted from this paper. DENSITY GRADIENTS IN COMPACTS The process of pressing metal powders in a die (disregarding for this consideration the powder filling and ejection operations) may be divided into three phases: (I) packing, (2) elastic and plastic deformation, (3) cold-working with or without fragmentation. After a long struggle with an underground mine-fire and its accompanying evils, having experienced the discouragement of many retreats, the uncertain hope of varying advances, and the gratification of final success, I am tempted to give the members of the Institute some of the details of the fight. I do not write with the thought of treating a novel subject, but with the hope that some one as unfortunate as ourselves may be led by our experience to avoid our mistakes and to profit by our successes. The fire occurred on June 16, 1890. It was a calamity awful in its results, ringing the death-knell of thirty-one stalwart miners, bringing sorrow and desolation to many homes, and destroying in a few hours the work of years. While there have been a number of disasters in the history of American mining in which there was a greater loss of life and property, I know of none in which so simple a cause led to results so serious. A description of the mine, with the details of the accident, is necessary for a full understanding of the conditions existing at the time. The Hill-Farm-Parrish mine is in Dunbar township, Fayette county, Pa., about one mile from Dunbar station, on the Pennsylvania and Baltimore & Ohio railroads, about four miles south of Connellsville, nine miles northeast of Uniontown, and in the heart of what is celebrated as the Connellsville coke region. The mine is owned and operated by the Dunbar Furnace Company ; and all the coal produced is made into coke and used in the company's furnaces, one mile to the east. The mine is opened by two slopes, the HillFarm and Parrish, the latter known also as the Ferguson. The Hill-Farm slope is 2600 feet northeast of the Parrish. There are 150 ovens at the former and 70 at the latter slope. The Hill-Farm slope is 4100 feet in length, and the length of the Parrish at the time of the accident was 3700 feet. IN the most general sense, solidification refers to the formation of crystalline material from either a gas or a liquid. However, in this symposium, only the formation of crystals from liquids will be considered. Thus, in our present study the problem of solidification becomes that of determining the mechanism of the transition from a liquid to a crystalline solid, and our particular interest is in the transformation of metals from the liquid to the crystalline state. Metal liquids are seldom composed of only one kind of atom. Often solute atoms are added intentionally to make an alloy, or they may be present accidently because of incomplete purification. Furthermore, there may be small solid particles of various other crystals present in the liquid. Such small crystals may persist if their melting points are higher than any temperature to which the liquid is heated. Prior to solidification, the liquid metal usually is poured from one container to another. The second container, called the mold, usually is at a lower temperature than the container, or the crucible, in which the metal is liquified. The first solid that forms upon contact with the mold generally is of a different composition than the liquid, usually containing fewer foreign atoms or dissolved impurities. Heat is evolved upon solidification and is dissipated through the surroundings. Tree-like crystals, or dendrites, grow from the container walls and branch into the melt, enriching the remaining liquid in impurity atoms. In some alloys the remaining, relatively impure liquid continues to solidify until no liquid remains and the branches of the original crystal are cemented together. In other alloys, particles with a second type of crystal structure appear before solidification is complete. First the nature of the liquid and the solid states will be considered and then the mechanism of the initial formation of crystals from pure and alloy liquids. Later the problem of the growth of these crystals and the complexities of solidification in a mold, where the temperatures are not uniform and the composition of the melt changes continuously, will be discussed. LIQUID AND CRYSTALLINE STATES A liquid is an aggregate of atoms arranged with no apparent regularity (over distances of more than a few atom diameters). Nevertheless, any given atom generally has a definite number of nearest neighbors at definite distances, and thus order may be said to exist over a short range. In a crystal, on the other hand, a regular array of atoms continues for many hundreds or thousands of atom diameters, and a long-range order is apparent. Thus, a crystal having long-range order can be reproduced by linear translations for 10-5 cm or more of some fundamental unit possessing short-range order. A crude illustration of the difference between liquid and crystalline structures can be obtained by comparing the possible arrangements of oranges in a crate. If the oranges are simply dumped into the crate haphazardly until it is filled, the oranges will represent a static model of a liquid.

A fairly complex analysis is required to select or evaluate a piece of excavating and bulk handling equipment for its performance. At present, there is little agreement as to what points should be considered, and even less on what procedure to follow. This paper provides both of these in a consistent and direct form. The analysis applies to all types and sizes of equipment. The importance of the equipment characteristics, job activities, and work conditions are stressed. Separate analytical stems are established in a flow chart for these. They are combined using suitability tests in: problem statement; natural conditions; suitability guidelines; appropriate equipment types; operational activities; encumbered space; geometric design; equipment sizing; failure and limits; performance and consumption; public policy checks; and costs and profitability. Public policy and economics receive emphasis towards the end. The procedure is iterative, containing distinct feedback loops. Specifying the steps and sequence provides a necessary structure which has long been overdue.

A CCORDING to Guertler,¹ Smith and Hamilton were the first to study the Cu-Ti alloy system, but because of the presence of large amounts of impurities their data are inconclusive. Hensel and Larsen² in 1930 and Kroll³ in 1931 determined the high copper end of the diagram. In 1939 Laves and Wallbaum,4 in a short summary of compound determinations in titanium binary alloys, mentioned the existence of a face-centered cubic compound, Ti2Cu, with 96 atoms per unit cell, and also a compound, TiCu3, which was said to have a deformed hexagonal close-packed structure in which ordering had been observed. The existence of a compound, TiCu, was also found but the crystal structure was not determined. Craighead, Simmons, and Eastwood determined the effect of copper on the allotropic transformation in titanium. The investigation was limited to alloys containing from 0 to 5 pct Cu, using titanium of fairly high impurity content. Experimental Procedure The methods used for determination of the diagram included metallographic examination and X-ray and thermal analyses. The system was first worked out using the higher purity "Process A" sponge titanium and oxygen-free copper. The high titanium region was next determined more accurately using iodide titanium and vacuum-melted, oxygen-free copper. Preparation of Alloys: The alloys were prepared by arc melting under prepurified helium atmos- pheres in water-cooled copper crucibles. The high purity iodide titanium alloys were prepared by melting three compositions along with a specimen of unalloyed titanium in a single charge. A multiple crucible was used which consisted of a copper plate with four cup-like depressions. The unalloyed titanium was melted first and acted as a getter for any oxygen and nitrogen in the melting chamber. Since these elements harden titanium, the hardness of the standard specimen was an index of the highest probable contamination of the alloy melts. The sponge titanium alloy melts weighed from 100 to 200 g each and the iodide titanium melts from 20 to 25 g. In order to insure greater homogeneity most of the alloys were melted, turned, and remelted twice. The larger buttons made from sponge titanium were sectioned or crushed before remelting. These alloys up to 30 pct Cu were further homogenized by forging at 925°C. They forged readily up to 20 pct Cu but numerous cracks were formed in the alloys containing from 20 to 30 pct. Above 30 pct Cu the sponge titanium alloys were homogenized by heating for 200 hr at 850°C under prepurified helium. Similarly, the iodide-grade titanium alloys containing up to 3 pct Cu were homogenized at 1000°C for 24 hr and all others at 880°C for 200 hr.

Stacking fault energy measurements of nickel-base alloys have been mainly confined to binary and ternary systems. In this paper, the stacking fault energy has been measured by the rolling texture method in a series of ten alloys which comprise successive additions of Cr, Mo, Fe, and C to pure nickel, eventually resulting in an alloy of the composition of Hastelloy alloy X. The alloys studied here are single-phase, solid solutions with the exception of two alloys in which some undissolved particles of "primary" carbide have been retained. It is found that successive additions of chromium, molybdenum, and iron all lower the stacking fault energy, with iron having only a minor effect. The stacking fault energy is found to increase when carbon is added in solid solution. The results from the rolling texture measurements are correlated with thin foil observations of dislocation substructures in these alloys. In a recent paper' it was pointed out that the dislocation substructure of various superalloy matrices could be classified into three broad categories based on 'high', 'medium', and 'low' stacking fault energy. It has also been demonstrated2 that the dislocation substructure in each of these categories has a well defined role in the nucleation of strengthening precipitates which is different from the role played by the dislocation substructure in other categories. Thus, it becomes desirable to understand the influence of various solute elements on the stacking fault energy and hence on the dislocation substructure of the matrix, before any further development of superalloys by mi-crostructural predesign can be undertaken. Recently, Beeston and France have studied the influence of increasing solute additions on the stacking fault energy of a series of binary nickel-base alloys relevant to the Nimonic series using the rolling texture method, and have then estimated the effect of a given alloy addition in five commercial Nimonic alloys. However, comparison with stacking fault energy data from other investigations''5 suggests that the influence of a given solute element in a nickel-base binary system is not necessarily the same in a ternary or more complex superalloy system. Accordingly, the present work was undertaken to study the effect of successive addition of solute elements to pure nickel, the final composition being the nominal composition of Hastelloy X. The rolling texture method of stacking fault energy measurement was used since it can be used for the whole range of stacking fault energy values and does not have the disadvantage of, say, the Node method which is only applicable to low values of stacking fault energy. In addition, the rolling texture method provides a means of determining the stacking fault energy which is statistically more significant than that provided by other methods. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Button heats of alloys of the compositions shown in Table I were prepared. Each button was remelted not less than four times. After a slight deformation (approximately 5 pct) all alloys were homogenized at 2200°F except alloys, H . I, and J. Alloys H and I were solution heat treated at 2150°F and alloy J at 2282OF. The buttons were cold worked by rolling, using "end-to-end" passes and intermediate anneals at the homogenization temperatures mentioned above. After each annealing treatment the samples were rapidly water quenched to avoid any precipitation. In alloys F and I, however, a few particles of "primary" carbides were retained even after the homogenization treatments at the temperatures mentioned above. Part of the solution heat treated material was cold worked to 0.04-in.-thick sheet and the penultimate reduction was -50 pct of deformation as recommended by Dillamore et al. All annealing was carried out in vacuo within sealed quartz capsules. Some of the material from each alloy was rolled down further to 0.004 in. strip for thin foil transmission electron microscopy specimens. Specimens of this strip were annealed at the homogenization temperature for 1 hr and then strained 7 pct by rolling at room temperature. Thin foils were prepared from the strip specimens by the 'window" technique using an Ethanol-Perchloric acid electrolyte at 32°F and a voltage of 22 v. Stainless steel cathodes were employed. All transmission electron microscopy was performed in a JEM-7 electron microscope using an accelerating voltage of 100 kv. Specimens from the 0.04 in. sheet which had been rolled -60 pct in the final pass were electropolished to remove the surface layers to a depth of approximately 0.002 in. Introduction The Darwin District is 30 miles east of Olancha which is 220 miles north from Los z4ngeles via U. S. Highway No. 6. The ore deposits occur in the Darwin hills that have been elevated above the Darwin plateau by typical basin and range-type faults. Some of these faults have been active quite recently as shown by the displacemerit of Quaternary (?) basalt flows and the rejuvenation of erosion in Darwin wash. The ore bodies occur as fissure fillings and replacement of favorable beddings in a thick series of Paleozoic limestones, dolomites, shales and quartzites. Rich oxidized lead-silver ores were dis'Overed in the early seventies. BY 1875, Darwin had a population Of about 5000, and by 1880 several small mills and smelters had been built. Early exhaustion of surface ores, the isolated location of the district, and fluctuation Of metal prices caused intermittent operations until World War 11. The district production is estimated at about $3,000,000 prior to 1900 and perhaps $4,000,000 between 1900 and 1945 when Anaconda purchased the major producing mines. 'or the Past two Years, daily production has averaged 75 tons of direct shipping and 150 tons of milling-grade ore. At present, 300 tons of mixed oxide and sulphide ore are treated by flotation, the oxidized lead minerals being activated by addition of sodium sulphide after galena and sphalerite have been recovered from the circuit. Extraction averages 85 pct of the lead, 80 pct of the silver, and about 33 Pct Of the zinc in a bulk concentrate. The mill is designed so that minor changes permit selective flotation of pyritic lead-zinc ores encountered at depth. General Geology The oldest rocks in the Darwin hills are a series of Paleozoic limestones, dolomites, shales and quartzites probably pennsyl-vanian in age. These rocks have been intruded on the Rest by the Coso granite batholith and on the east by a granodiorite stock. Numerous sills and dikes grading from orthoclase granite to gabbro are exposed in the underground workings. The sedimentary rocks have been considerably folded and faulted, the most prominent structure being a northwest pitching anticlinal fold, the crest of which lies just west of the ridge line of the Darwin hills, The east limb of this fold has been intruded by the granodiorite stock and east of the stock the sediments show several closely spaced anticlines and synclines. The minor flexures on the west flank of the major fold are structurally important in localizing the ore in the Defiance and Essex mines of the Darwin group. There are three principal systems of faulting and fissuring, most of which are post-intrusive and premineral in age, with minor amounts of postmineral movement. The Darwin tear fault is the largest, most persistent fault in the district. It strikes N 60 to 75°W, dips steeply south and is traceable for about 10 miles. It is a normal

The w phase has been found in alloys of Ti-Cr, Ti-Fe, Ti-Mn, Ti-MO,2 and Ti-v.3 The temperature-time-transformation characteristics have, as yet, not been determined for most of these. In this study, such transformation characteristics have been investigated for two heat-treatable titanium alloys known to exhibit transition phase phenomena. The development of a theory for miscible liquid displacement requires evaluation of the variables which affect growth of the mixing zone between solvent and displaced oil. Factors which appear to be important are individual fluid viscosities, viscosity ratios, flood rate, fluid densities, flow characteristics of the porous medium and molecular diffusion coefficients of the fluid components. The primary purpose of this paper is to evaluate diffusion effects. Theoretical treatments to date have been limited to floods for which the viscosity ratio is one. Two principal theories have been proposed. Von Rosenberg adapted for porous media a theory derived for capillary tubes by G. Taylor.' ,' In this theory molecular diffusion perpendicular to the direction of flow is a primary factor in sharpening the flood front. Slow floods give sharper fronts for a given distance traveled than fast floods. An alternative theory considers miscible liquid displacement as a statistical problem.3,4,5 Diffusion is not an important factor in this theory, but it leads to the same general type of equation as von Rosenberg's. Both theories predict S-shaped concentration profiles with the same dependence on distance traveled. The statistical or "dispersion" theory predicts rate independence, however. To supplement rate studies a direct measurement of a diffusion effect would be helpful in evaluating which of the two proposed mechanisms best describes miscible liquid displacement for one-to-one viscosity ratio systems. No quantitative theory has been proposed for floods in which a low-viscosity fluid displaces a high-viscosity fluid. It might be anticipated, however, that the extensive fingering observed in floods with adverse viscosity ratios would increase opportunities for an exchange of components between displaced and displacing liquids by a diffusional process. Even if molecular diffusion were not an important mixing mechanism for one-to-one viscosity ratio systems, it could be significant in systems with adverse viscosity ratios. METHOD FOR EVALUATING DIFFUSIONAL MIXING In solvent flooding the displacing liquid can become mixed with the displaced liquid by a number of processes; in general, either mechanical or diffusional in character. To evaluate the contribution of diffusion, a method was sought that would distinguish diffusional mixing from mechanical mixing. Suppose two soluble tracers are added to the displacing liquid and that one tracer has a diffusion coefficient much greater than the other. Then, if diffusion is important during miscible liquid displacement and if diffusional transport is primarily transverse to the direction of flow, substances with high diffusion coefficients will have sharper concentration profiles than those with comparatively low molecular diffusion coefficients. In order to have material balance the profiles for the two tracers must intersect. For one-to-one viscosity ratios the intersection would occur at the 50 per cent concentration point. It is generally assumed that diffusion in the direction of flow is negligible. This assumption appears reasonable because flow velocities are ordinarily orders of magnitude greater than diffusional velocities. If this is not a valid assumption, however, the shapes of the fronts will be further degraded by longitudinal diffusion. The effects of rate and molecular diffusion coefficients are the opposite for longitudinal diffusion to those for lateral diffusion. Higher rates or lower diffusion coefficients would tend to give sharper fronts. The double tracer method offers several unique advantages in evaluating effect of molecular diffusion. First, the method gives a direct measure of the effect of diffusion on mixing zone size. Second, the effect of a difference in diffusion coefficients is determined from a single experiment. Comparison of several experiments at different rates is not required. Third, the method is applicable for any viscosity ratio. Fourth, the method is unaffected by density differences between the two fluids which might result in rate dependent gravity effects. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Suitable tracers are substances whose diffusion coefficients differ as widely as possible, but whose adsorptions on rock surfaces is negligible. The two tracers selected were methanol and sucrose in water solutions. The approximate diffusion coefficients for methanol and sucrose, as given in the International Critical Tables, are 1.3 X 10-5 and 0.3 X 10-5 m2/sec, respectively. There have been some recent excursions with antimony as a corrosion inhibitor in tubes, but in sheet brass it has been regarded with apprehension and generally avoided. This is not to say that contaminations have never occurred, and probably a great many brass mill men have had their own ideas on the effect of such contamination. Our own views were based upon certain experiences some years ago with strip castings that split lengthwise in the early stages of rolling. The nature of this splitting is shown in Fig. I, from a photograph taken in 1922 as a record of 20 bars of 65-35 common brass made with an antimonial brand of copper. These bars were cast 6¾ in. wide by I in. thick by 45 in. long. In the first pass through the rolls, 19 of the 20 split lengthwise throughout their length, while each half curved outward in a wide arc as it emerged from the rolls. In those days, if splitting was not a frequent occurrence, it was not unfamiliar. One can recall periods of short duration when large amounts of common brass would behave in this way. There was nothing imaginary about these spells. The affected metal would split lengthwise in the breakdown rolls, and no maneuvering of mill practice made any difference. The condition would descend like a plague, demoralize the mill for several days, and disappear. It is doubtful if anyone knew the cause—however many explanations may have been current. SINCE the installation at Kropfmuehl, Bavaria, of a modern flotation concentrator in 1938, the flake and fine graphite from the Passau area can now be delivered in about any normal specified carbon content of any size range up to a flake averaging about 0.7 mm. The graphite finds a wide German and export market for crucible manufacture, pencil leads, dry cells and other uses. A controversy over the origin of the graphite deposits is being resolved in favor of syngenesis rather than epigenesis. The syngenetic theory is newly supported by the yet unpublished work of Hartmann of the Bavarian Geological Survey. Development work and exploration for graphite in the area may be changed in direction as the syngenetic theory is accepted. Crystalline graphite is produced in the area east of Passau near the junction of Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia, as shown in Fig. 1. This is the only graphite area of importance in Germany, and Gra-phitwerk Kropfmuehl AG is the only operating firm in the area. The plant and mine are located at Kropfmuehl near Hauzenberg, Kreis Wegscheid, about 10 miles east of Passau. A narrow gage railway from the mine connects with the German Railway at Schaibing Bahnhof. The Pfaffenreuth mines date from about 1730. Until the early 20th century mining operations were carried out in a haphazard fashion. During World War I graphite mining and milling was increased, since it had to cover almost all of the crucible needs of the Central Powers. Between the wars some 11 mines were operated by two large and several small companies, but under the Nazis these were consolidated by 1938 into the Kropfmuehl enterprise. Kropfmuehl built a modern flotation mill to treat its own ores and small amounts of custom ores and tailings from the area. Since Graphitwerk Kropfmuehl AG was an I.G. Farbenindustry subsidiary, it has been under Military Government Property Control and probably will be sold to private German capital. Geology The country rock of the graphite area is part of the "kristallines Grundgebirge," the series of old gneissic and schistose rocks that constitutes the bed rock of most of the Bohemian basin and rims the Sudeten-land. The gneissic rocks of the graphite area are considered to have been metamorphosed during the Carboniferous period. They are bordered on the north by granite stocks and penetrated by numerous smaller granite and pegmatitic intrusive rocks, as shown in Fig. 1. The gneiss is classed as a micaceous, coarse-grained cordierite gneiss by most investigators. It is much metamorphosed by the granite, particularly in the north near the larger granite bodies. Interbedded in the gneiss are the graphite seams and lenses, and also beds and lenses of crystalline limestone containing disseminated graphite in noncommercial quantities. The gneiss, together with the included graphite and limestone seams and lenses, is cut and displaced by a number of granite sills of medium to fine grain and by a large number of diorite lamprophyre dikes and a few syenite-pegmatite dikes. The lamprophyre dikes are of various mineral compositions and textures, but many are banded and richly impregnated with pyrite; while the syenite-pegmatite dikes are coarse-grained with good crystals of titanite, pyroxene, uralite and other green amphiboles. Most investigators and the miners speak only of diorite and granite dikes cutting the graphite seams. The diorite dikes are later than the granite and some of the faulting, as is evident from Figs. 1 and 2. Individual graphite seams and lenses may be mined for thicknesses of several feet up to several scores of feet, and for distances of several hundred feet. The aggregate thickness of a series of some 20 seams of graphite, limestone and interbedded gneiss at Kropfmuehl is stratigraphically about 450 ft. Laterally, the graphite in a seam may pinch out or grade into crystalline limestone. Graphite crystals also are found disseminated in the gneiss itself, although in unmineable concentrations. The faults that cut the graphite seams carry graphite for some feet or tens of feet away from the seams, apparently mechanically. Similarily, the graphite lenses themselves often contain mechanically introduced inclusions of wall rock, probably from flowage during folding. Graphite crystals make up 10 to 30 pct of the fresh, mineable graphite lenses at Kropfmuehl, averaging about 20 to 25 pct after hand-sorting by the miners. In weathered lenses, the graphite concentration is said to be as high as 50 pct. The associated primary and hydrothermal minerals are dom-inantly feldspar and calcite, plus quartz, pyrrhotite, pyrite, biotite and occasional garnet, hornblende, sphalerite and galena. Associated secondary minerals include kaolin, nontronite, mangano-oxide-silicates (mog), adularia and chlorite. The superimposed suite of siliceous cementation minerals present consist largely of opal, chloropal, chalcedony, jasper, and hyalite. The kaolin is of special interest since it too was mined as early as 1730 and was used in the well-known Nymphenburg porcelain from 1756 on. The kaolin is derived from the gneiss and the syenite pegmatites. The crystals of graphite vary in size within a given seam, but in seams more than a mile away from the granite on the north the average crystal-linity is less coarse, lowering the commercial value. The lenses in the Kropfmuehl-Pfaffenreuth area are the most developed, and are the only ones with deep workings now accessible.
