THE ladle is a small hearth made on a cage of iron bars like a bird-cage, and has a handle so that it can easily be taken from the forge and carried wherever desired. It is a common device and is much used among masters for small castings, but with a large weight you would have difficulty in lifting it by hand even though you were aided by levers and winches. If you should indeed do it, it would be just as if you had lifted the aforesaid hearth by force, and this would be unwise if you could do anything less difficult. A forge is likewise made for this, with a good pair of large bellows that are well covered with cloth. When the small hearth has been made with good clay, baked, and well covered with ashes, it is placed in front of the mouth [of the bellows] and a crown of two or three brick ends is built around it on top of the rim so that the charcoal may be held better and in greater quantity. In a series of papers, the authors and their associates have shown the influence of four important factors on the technical cohesion limit.3-l6 By "technical cohesion limitv is meant the technically determin-able resistance to fracture. The four importarlt factors are the stress system, plastic deformation, temperature, and the strain rate, The influence of any one of these factors may be represented by a curve of cohesion limits, although only one point on the curve may represent actual fracture. As the term "fracture stress" has come into general use with the same significance as technical cohesion limit, the authors are here using the shorter term with the understanding that it does not always refer to actual fracture. The previously mentioned series of papers contains ample evidence that plastic extension increases the fracture stress of any polycrystalline metal, In a recent paper of the series,l5 moreover, it has been shown that the effect of plastic deformation on the fracture stress cannot be attributed to reorientation of internal flaws but is a work-strengthening effect, similar to the effect on the flow stress, $ Plastic deformation of steels, however, may not only cause work hardening, but may result in additional hardness because of strain aging. Some evidence that strain aging affects not only the flow stress but also the fracture stress, has been presented in a recent paper.14 In that paper, a study is made of the influence Of Plastic deformstion at room temperature on the fracture stress of ferritic steels at -188°C. The study is based on the results Of two-stage tests. In the first stage each specimen was extended a predetermined amount at room temperature; in the second stage the specimen was tested to fracture in liquid air. In most Of these tests the specimen remained in the testing machine during the interval of about one hour between the first and second stages, it was kept under a tensile load of about 500 lb and maintained at liquid air temperature. The effects of various amounts of .plastic deformation on the fracture stress were thus determined and curves were obtained to represent the influence of plastic deformation at room temperature on the stress at brittle fracture in liquid air.14 Two specimens Of ingot iron, however, were removed from the testing machine at the end of the first stage and several days elapsed before the specimens were tested to fracture in liquid air, As shown in Fig 8 of that paper," the points representing fracture of these specimens are far above the curve representing the results of two-stage tests without a rest interval between the stages. From that time they decline in production, the rapidity of decline depending on the output of the wells and on other factork governing their productivity. While the production of crude oil and condensate in South Arkansas increased only 1.7 per cent over the 1940 figure, complete utilization of gas produced with the oil and condensate, and heretofore wasted, was beginning to be evidenced. There were 26,229,264 bbl. of oil and condensate produced in South Arkansas during 1941, as against 25,790,380 bbl. for the year 1940. (Fig. I.) Since 1936, deep producing sands have been discovered in 18 fields and during that period only 40 per cent of the total state production has come from Upper Cretaceous formations while 60 per cent came from the Lower Cretaceous and Jurassic formations. The gas produced with crude oil and condensate from the latter formation contains large quantities of hydrogen sulphide, the maximum being 6900 grains per 100 cu. ft. in the Patton pool of Lafayette County. Gas Utilization During the latter part of 1940 and the early part of 1941, pilot plants were placed in operation to determine whether the hydrogen sulphide and deleterious material in South Arkansas gases could be removed economically. The Federal Government desired to build a large aluminum plant in the Ouachita Valley and was seeking cheap fuel for the generation of electricity. The fact that the gases were produced with appreciable quantities of crude oil and condensate made it available at a very low price, since the state's conservation law prohibits the flaring of any gas. As a result of these experiments the first large-scale unit for the processing of gases containing hydrogen sulphide was placed in operation on Sept. I, 1941. The plant is in the Magnolia oil field, Columbia County. It processes residue gas from the Shell Oil Company's gasoline plant in that field and also raw gas from the Village field, 6 miles east of the Magnolia field. The gas entering the desulphuri-zation unit is laden with approximately 1400 grains of hydrogen sulphide per 100 cu. ft. and is stripped to a content of 4 grains per 100 cu. ft. The capacity of the plant is 15 million cu. ft. of gas treated daily under a pressure of 160 lb. per sq. in. The cost of treatment, exclusive of depreciation, is appreciably less than I per 1000 cubic feet. Two other plants of much greater capacity have been announced and priorities have been granted, which should bring the total amount of gas treated to 150 million cu. ft. daily. The gas to be treated will have a maximum hydrogen sulphide content of 4500 grains per 100 cu. ft. and will be processed under a pressure of 600 lb. per sq. in. These developments are something entirely new in field practice for the industry. The fact that this heretofore wasted gas is available at very low cost has led to the location of some eight war industries within the state, in addition to the alu-minum plant. THE system molten copper-oxygen-sulphur is of interest from both the practical and theoretical standpoints; practically, because oxygen and sulphur play an important role in the commercial production of copper, and theoretically because it offers a chance to study the reaction between an oxide gas, SO2, and a molten metal. Reactions of this type, such as that between CO or CO2 and molten iron, are important in many metallurgical operations. Again, the determination of any gas-metal equilibrium is of theoretical interest and value insofar as it contributes to the general development of the laws for solution of gases in metals. This problem is being given an increasing amount of attention in modern metallurgy. This paper is the first of a series and presents the results of a determination of the solubility of sulphur dioxide in molten copper at temperatures from 1100° to 1500°C., and pressures from about 20 mm. of mercury to somewhat above atmospheric. REVIEW OF PREVIOUS WORK The solubility of gases in most liquids has been found to obey Henry's law, which states that for a fixed temperature the amount of gas dissolved is directly proportional to the pressure. However this law does not hold for liquid metals. Instead, it appears that for many gases, particularly the simple diatomic ones such as 02, N2 and H2, the amount dissolved in liquid metals is directly proportional to the square root of the pressure. This is known as Sieverts' law. It may be recognized as a special case of Henry's law, which applies when the solute gas is dissociated into atoms or when it reacts with the solvent metal to form solute molecules containing single atoms of the gaseous elements, as, for example: [(MG) l 2M +G2 = 2MG K = Ma X Pa, [I]] which, if the solubility is not too high and the concentration of metal therefore nearly constant, can be simplified to: [MG = Kl Pa,[2]] Following the same reasoning, it would be expected that the solubility of SO2 in copper would be proportional to the cube root of the pressure, the reaction being as follows: [6Cu + SO2 = Cu2S + 2Cu20[3] K _ Cu2S X (Cu20)2 (Cu)6(Pso2)[4]] or, neglecting the change in metal concentration and considering that the concentrations of sulphur and oxygen are both proportional to the volume V of gas absorbed: [8 =KI = Pte, or VSO2= K2 '~/PeO, [S]]

At the meeting of the Istitote in New York, in February, 1880," I described a process of determining sulphur iu metallic allphides, with especial reference to the determination of pyrites in coal. The procem, as then described, is as follows: A solution of sodium hydrate, of 1.25 specific gravity, is saturated with bromine. If an excess of bromiue is used it must be neutralized by the addition of a little more sodium hydrate. In a previous study of the carbide phase of chromium steels, it was shown that chromium carbide (Cr7C3) is 2 more stable carbide than cementite (Fe3C) at tempering temperatures above about 500°C. in quenched steels containing from about I to 7.5 per cent chromium. Below this temperature the carbide phase was found to consist of cementite in all of the steels examined. In the present investigation it was found that a similar change in the carbide phase takes place in molybdenum and in chromium-molybdenum steels at approximately the same tempering temperatures. The approximate ranges of occurrence of the alloy carbides Cr7C3, Cr4C, and Mo2C have been determined in steels containing up to 5 per cent chromium, I per cent molybdenum and 0.60 per cent carbon. The experimental steels were made in small high-frequency furnaces from Armco ingot iron, low-carbon ferrochromium and calcium molybdate and were poured into 2-in. ingots, which were forged to I-in. round bars. Sections of the bars were heated to the carbide-solution temperature and cooled rapidly to induce austenite transformation at relatively low temperatures. The steels were subject to some segregation, therefore comparatively high temperatures were necessary to dissolve all of the carbides. The microstructure of the quenched specimens was examined to verify the belief that the carbides had been dissolved, and also to determine the nature of the nonmartensitic structure of incompletely hardened steels. Ferrite and pseudo-martensite were present in some of the specimens, but all specimens were quenched at such a rate that pearlite was not formed, in order to ensure the formation of the carbides at temperatures lower than about 500°C. It had been found previously1 that in chromium steels the chromium carbide could be produced by transformation of austenite in the pearlite range above 500°C., and, in order to start the tempering treatment with the carbide present as cementite, the absence of pearlite was considered to be essential. The specimens were tempered for 64 hr. to permit the formation of the stable carbide. After tempering, the specimens were submitted to microscopic and X-ray examination. The carbides were separated either electrolytically in a 5 per cent HCl electrolyte or with an acidified copper-potassium chloride solution. The crystal structure of the carbide phases was determined by the Debye-Scherrer type of X-ray patterns. The X-ray patterns obtained from specimens near the boundaries between two types of carbides were generally weak and diffuse as compared with the other patterns. For this reason, and because the more soluble components may be masked, the boundaries between the phases could not be determined precisely. However, the X-ray analysis of electrolytically separated carbides has given consistently reproducible results

The migration of hydrogen and of deuterium dissolved in a iron and in nickel induced by an applied electrical potential has been measured over a range of temperature. In all cases the intevstitial solute migrates to the cathode. The deduced charges of transport are positive, independent of or slightly dependent on temperature, and markedly larger for the beavier mass. These results are interpreted as showing predominating momenlum transfer between electron holes and the acticated complex of the elementary diffusion act. THE migration of components of a metallic system under the action of an applied electrical potential is called electromigration or electratransport. This phenomenon has been known since 1861 and is becoming of increasing interest to metal scientists because of the opportunity it offers to explore the connections between mass transport and electron transport. Until recently, reliable data have been very scarce because of the difficulties inherent in the measurements. In addition, theoretical understanding has been either nonexistent or rudimentary and at present this situation is only moderately improved. Whereas the prevalent notion had been (and is still widely held) that electromigration directly reflects the state of ionization of a component in its equilibrium state in the metal, it is now becoming clear that the major, if not the sole, factor is the momentum transfer between the charge carriers, themselves in motion because of the applied field, and the metallic components in their activated state. It becomes important therefore to obtain reliable data over a range of temperature on electrornigration in systems where only one component moves, that is, either in pure metals (vacancy motion) or in interstitial solid solutions. Our choice of systems was dictated by our measurements' of the Soret effect in solid solutions of hydrogen and deuterium in iron and nickel. Indeed, the main reason for making measurements on electromigration at all is that we suspected a mechanistic connection between thermal diffusion and electromigration. In our former paper' we proposed that what is common to both phenomena is the momentum transfer between the charge carriers in the metal and the atom as it jumps from one equilibrium position to another. In Soret diffusion, however, there is in addition the dissipation of the energy of the jumping atom via pho-nons. We have since found that similar ideas for this interconnection have been developed by Fiks.2 In the present paper we will discuss in more detail our understanding of the mechanism of electromigration itself, but we turn first to a presentation of the experiments and results. EXPERIMENTS AND RESULTS Let us consider a metallic system in which only one component, m , can diffuse at the temperature in question, and to which are applied simultaneously an electrical potential gradient, grad cp, and a chemical potential gradient, grad p,. One may write3 for the material flux Jm and the electronic charge flux Je by applying the condition, grad = 0, to Eq. [I] and evaluating grad(um/T) for the isothermal case and for activity coefficient independent of composition over the relevant composition range. ere, c is the concentration and D the diffusivity of the mobile component. The experimental technique that we have used to measure Z* for the isotopes of hydrogen individually dissolved in each of two transition metals has been developed from a method used by Wagner and Heller.4 (A somewhat similar method was also used by Herold.5) A wire or thin rod of the metal under study connects two volumes of gaseous hydrogen at identical pressures; hence grad um = 0. A direct current is made to pass through the specimen, serving to maintain the specimen at the desired temperature and also to produce the electromigration of the hydrogen dissolved in the metal in equilibrium with the gaseous hydrogen. A DETAILED description of the many variations in iron mining and transportation practice in Minnesota would require much space. Since a fairly detailed description of the practices then in use was published in the guidebook issued in connection with the meeting of the Institute on the iron ranges in I920, and subsequent developments have been described by E. E. Hunner,1 M. H. Barber,2 and A. E. Anderson, J. M. Riddell and G. J. Holt,3 it will not be necessary here to do more than review the highlights of current practice. Details on any points of interest can be obtained through correspondence with the operators involved. [T] The iron ores of Minnesota, which have been formed through enrichment of the iron formation in which they occur, largely by the removal of silica, are usually covered by a blanket of glacial drift known locally as "surface." Surface material, including sand, clay, hardpan and boulders, makes up the greater portion of the stripping in open-pit operations. In some instances, stripping also includes taconite and "paint rock," directly below the surface material and overlying the ore. Taconite is the iron formation, a ferruginous chert with interbedded slate layers. "Paint rock" is a local term for oxidized slate layers interbedded in the iron formation, high in phosphorus, alumina and moisture. In the present emergency many operators are forced to forego the economies attained by year-round utilization of equipment and to equip for, and carry on, stripping and mining simultaneously. In the normal years or lean years to come, most properties probably will be over-equipped and high depreciation charges will have to be absorbed.

A DETAILED description of the many variations in iron mining and transportation practice in Minnesota would require much space. Since a fairly detailed description of the practices then in use was published in the guidebook issued in connection with the meeting of the Institute on the iron ranges in 1920, and subsequent developments have been described by E. E Hunner,1 M. H Barber,2 and A. E. Anderson, J. M. Riddell and G. J. Holt,3 it will not be necessary here to do more than review the highlights of current practice Details on any points of interest can be obtained through correspondence with the operators involved.† The iron ores of Minnesota, which have been formed through enrichment, of the iron formation in which they occur, largely by the removal of silica, are usually covered by a blanket of glacial drift known locally as "surface." Surface material, including sand, clay, hardpan and boulders, makes up the greater portion of the stripping in open-pit operations. In some instances, stripping also includes taconite and "paint rock," directly below the surface material and overlying the ore. Taconite is the iron formation, a ferruginous chert with interbedded slate layers. Numerous articles have been written about the coal miner ; he has been compared with brave men who have gone out to conquer some unknown hazard throughout the ages. Now, however, modern mining is no longer something to be avoided, but a vocation that anyone can be proud of, with remuneration equal to or above that of almost any industry. A concerted effort is being made each day by both the operators of most mines as well as the state and federal inspectors to see that coal mines are as safe or safer than work places in any other industry. How- ever, it is true that mine fires and explosions have occurred in the mining industry since its inception. One of the earliest accurate references to such an occurrence is found in the transactions of the Royal Society of London. In the Colliery Managers' Handbook, 1898, Caleb Pamely writes of an explosion that occurred ,at Fatfield, England in August 1708, resulting in the deaths of 69 persons. He states: "Three of them, viz, two men and a woman, were blown quite up from the bottom of the shaft, fifty-seven fathoms deep, into the air, to a considerable distance from the mouth of the pit." It is interesting to note that women were employed ,as miners in England during that period. In the United States, the first record of coal mined was in 1702 by the Jamestown colonists. In 1786, about 20 years after Pittsburgh, PA was first settled, a charter was granted by William Penn to mine coal on the banks of the Monongahela River. Then in 1803, the first important coal company, the Lehigh Coal Co., was established. From this beginning, the mining industry continued to grow in importance and the first state mining law was formulated in 1870. The Pennsylvania state mining law was followed in 1873 by Ohio's, and in 1876 by Maryland's. A mine explosion at Avondale, PA in 1869 stimulated state legislatures to formulate these early laws. IN 1914 the writer and K. L. Kithil announced, through Bulletin 70 of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, that the United States possessed the largest deposits of radium-bearing ore in the world. At that time a small amount of this ore was being, mined and shipped to Europe, and one company was preparing to start the extraction and recovery of radium in this country. The importance of our carnotite deposits in Colorado and Utah up to the publication of Bulletin 70 was not, however, appreciated by anyone.. At that time the total supply of radium in the world was about 10 g., calculated as element, and when I estimated that at least 100 g. of radium element, and probably 200 g., would be produced from our carnotite deposits, there was a considerable amount of skepticism. Up to the present time almost 200 g. have come from this ore, and some writers put this figure a little higher. Uranium ore was found in the copper mines of the Union Minière du Haut-Katanga at Luiswishi in 1913. Later discoveries were made at other places in the Belgian Congo, and the Katanga ores now represent the largest supply of radium-bearing ore in the world. In fact, since 1923 very little radium has been produced from American carnotite, the Katanga ore representing practically the world's supply of. radium since that date.

(New York Meeting, February, 1912.) THE Ashio copper-mine of the Furukawa Mining Co. is situated 18 miles from Nikko, and 109 miles north of Tokyo, near the center of Japan. The mine-waters are run over scrap-iron, whereby most of the copper is precipitated as cement copper, leaving iron sulphate with some copper sulphate in solution. After using in the wet concentrating ore-dressing plant, the waste water contains clay and ore-slimes. The only avenue of disposal of this water is the Watarese river; but as this flows through valleys in which the water is used for irrigating the rice-crops, it is necessary to purify and clarify the water before discharge. The water amounts to from 600 to 700 cu. ft. (from 17 to 20 cu. m.) per minute, and averages about 0.00025 per cent. of copper, representing more than 18 tons of copper per month. The water carries H2SO4, FeSO4, Fe, (SO,),, CuSO4 and other metallic sulphates in solution, and clay, ore-fines, slimes and basic. iron sulphates as suspended matters. To purify and clarify the water, precipitation by milk of lime has been used, in three different ways, as follows: I. First Method, Copper not Recovered. Milk of lime was run into the water, and the mixture run through six settling-ponds, and then through a sand filter into the river. Fig. 1 is a view of the settling- and filtering-ponds. In the first pond, sand and metallic hydrates free from copper collected; in the next five ponds, slime, calcium sulphate, and metallic hydrates carrying copper settled out. LIMITATIONS of the sintering process as applied to the agglomeration of fine iron-ore concentrates are related directly to the sizes and aggregating properties of the ore particles. A normal sintering mixture is composed predominantly of material which ranges in size from 5/8 in. to 100 mesh, whereas concentrate is composed of material which ranges in size from 100 mesh to less than 10µ. Unless the concentrate has high aggregating properties, it is quite impervious to a gas stream and, as such, inhibits the capacity and operability of the conventional sintering process. Material has Poor Aggregating Properties Aggregating properties, in this case, may be defined as the ability to form small agglomerated fragments or accreated masses by a normal mixing action, and the ability to maintain these shapes during drying and firing. Coarse-screened ores are a natural aggregate, and fine, slimey ores have good aggregating properties. However, specular-hematite flotation concentrate has a very low tendency to aggregate, due to its particle sizes, shapes, and surface chemistry and, as such, is readily air borne in a gas stream when dry.

The reduction of iron oxide, such as Fe203, to iron in the blast furnace is performed principally by carbon monoxide, but partly by solid carbon by the two following reactions: Fe2O3 + 3CO = 2Fe 4- 3CO2 2Fe2O3 + 3C = 4Fe + 3CO2 It is known that reduction by carbon monoxide takes place at a much lower temperature than reduction by carbon and that the reducing action of earbon monoxide progresses to the inside of the ore in lump form by gaseous diffusion. In the reduction by carbon, however, the reducing action takes place only at the contact surface of the ore and carbon, so that the more complete the reduction by carbon monoxide, the more efficient is the operation. However, the reduction does not progress as shown in the foregoing equation, because carbon dioxide acts oxidizingly on the metallic iron to such a degree that when the gaseous composition reaches a certain proportion of carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide, the reduction practically stops, even though the gases are moving slowly through the heated ore. The proportions of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide in the gas depend on the kind of iron oxide and the temperature of reduction, also on the duration of time in the reaction. The longer the time of the reaction, the higher the proportion of carbon dioxide obtained in the gas, but finally it will attain to a condition of equilibrium.
