The Crestmore Mine of the American Cement Company lies at the eastern end of the Jurupa Mountains, 50 miles east of Los Angeles. Originally, a quarry was opened in 1908 for "limestone" used in the manufacture of cement. The mining operations eventually went underground employing first a modified system of block caving and later the "room and pillar" scheme. The limestones are relatively small roof pendants preserved in an enveloping and intrusive quartz diorite. They occur as two irregular lenticular bodies roughly parallel at the top and tending towards convergence at depth. Their dip varies between 25 and 30 degrees E. The presently mined lower bed, Chino limestone, is typically composed of alternating bands a few inches to a few feet thick of medium to coarsely granular white crystalline limestone and somewhat yellowish limestone (brucite marble). A "room and pillar" scheme of mining is currently employed in the lower body of the Crestmore Mine. The levels are horizontal and access is provided by a spiraling road starting in the old quarry. The present depth of operations is an average 750 ft below the surface. Fig. 1 gives a three-dimensional general sketch of the mine. The long axis of the rooms is in an E-W direction, normal to the strike of the beds. Fig. 2 is a horizontal map of the 130 level, the deepest level mined presently. It is in this level that most of the in-situ investigations have been conducted. The present investigation was made possible by a non-restrictive grant of the American Cement Company to the University of California. George H. Abeel, Hurley, Wis. (communication to the Secretary) : Doubtless Mr. Boss did not mean to be understood as saying that the dikes of this range are everywhere overlaid with iron-ore. I know of places where the dark, massive dike is found near the surface, but no ore is found on it. And his statement (p. 557) that a wherever the slightest inclination is shown it is always to the east," should be modified to " usually." There are several instances of a westward pitch, e.g., at the Palms, Newport and Odanah properties, and also at the Montreal mine, where we encountered in the ore a small dike pitching west. Mr. Boss's statement (p. 559) that. the ore of the Pence mine lens " has all been removed from the Pence and Father Hennepin lands, and practically from the Montreal property, and is now being wrought by the Montreal Mining Company on the ' Sec. 33' property," does not convey the exact state of the latter company's operations. We are still mining ore on the Montreal property from the lens referred to, and expect to continue doing so for some little time to come. On the other hand, we are getting a shaft down to the ore on the " See. 33 " property, but ye have not yet encountered the dike. This can hardly be considered as working the ore. I do not understand upon what evidence Mr. Boss can consider the correctness of a previous hypothetical location of the dike to have been established " within 2 feet," when the dike has not yet been reached. Possibly he has been misled by hearsay reports.

The lattice parameter of the inlerrnetallic compound Nb3Sn has been measured as a function of temperature from 80° to 1290°K. The results are compared with published data on the thermal ex- ThE recent interest in the intermetallic compound, Nb3Sn, as an engineering material for the production of superconducting devices has necessitated that certain engineering data be obtained. Because of the difficulty encountered in producing bulk pansion of niobium and indicate that the compound when made by diffusion of tin into niobium at 1000°C, would be subjected to a tensile strain of about 0.1 pct when cooled to room temperature. material which is single phase, the coefficient of thermal expansion has not been measured by dilata-tional methods. Therefore the lattice parameters of fine-grained samples of Nb3Sn produced on the surface of a niobium sheet by heating in molten tin at 950°C have been obtained as a function of temperature. The results are compared with published data on niobium2 and Nb3Sn3 and with lattice-parameter measurements made on small single crystals of Nb3Sn.

The engineering personnel shortage, present and impending, so well brought out in the article in Mining Engineering in the August, 1951 number, both in the editorial lead and the article by William B. Plank and Henry J. Petrie, has left untapped and has ignored a potential source of supply that would fill the need ably and with complete satisfaction. This source is comprised of the women engineers- and geologists, both presently, trained and able to handle work at all levels, and the many who would make splendid engineers and geologists if they could hope for even a modest taste of the square deal that should be theirs, but, as we all know, is not. I write from experience. It is not pleasant or sensible to have to urge borderline cases among men students to consider engineering and geology as careers to fill the need, when I have far more able, interested and suited young women students whom I must divert into other channels. It does not make sense to scrape the bottom and sides of the barrel to induce potentially second or third rate male engineers and geologists to enter the profession when we have superior material among the women, eager to do good work in these fields. It does not make sense for these men to become second or third rate in these fields when they might be first rate salesmen, musicians, advertising copywriters or policemen. Nor does it make any more sense to force potentially first rate female geologists and engineers to become second or third rate and very frustrated typists, kindergarten teachers, dress sales-women or clerks. At this point I am willing to admit that where superstitious -miners object to women in underground workings, men are available for the jobs. Moreover, it is not necessary for women to be sent into the most difficult country, if there is reluctance on either side of the contract. There may be fewer of them eager for the roughest assignments, in proportion to the men, but women are so accustomed to discrimination far more complete than that against any racial or religious group, that a reasonably tough assignment would seem like a heaven-descended joy. In my own experience, I have found that my girl students majoring in geology, could keep up with me in the field in the roughest terrain, but. the men, all but the best students and the most physically fit young men, complained that they could not keep up with me and that I always "walked their-legs off. The women, a few men and I always returned with bags heavy with well chosen specimens and proper notes. Most of the men carried no specimens and-but poor scraps of notes on loose bits of paper. Yet the men were urged to prepare for a career in engineering or geology if their examination marks were reasonably good. When we find that we still have a shortage of engineers and geologists, after putting all the qualified women to work, then we may begin to worry. World War II has developed a use for the nonmetal mineral quartz crystal that was unknown in World War I. During the interim period of peace, experimental work in the radio field with the piezoelectric properties of quartz crystal resulted in the almost universal adoption of quartz-crystal radio oscillator plates to control frequency in radio broadcasting, police, commercial and amateur communications equipment. Telephone resonators and filters made from quartz crystal also were developed, which vastly improved the frequency control of long distance telephone circuits. Expansion of the Industry The sudden war demands of the armed services for radio equipment using quartz crystal for frequency control led to an unprecedented expansion of the manufacturing industry. It is estimated that the 1940 peacetime volume amounted to approximately $1,500,000, while today a vast new quartz-crystal industry supplies more than $150,000,000 worth of quartz oscillator plates to the Army and Navy each year. This demand has caused an enormous expansion not only of American manufacturing facilities but also of Brazilian mining output, virtually our only source of raw quartz crystal. Actual figures of imports and consumption cannot be cited, for security reasons, but certain comparisons have been made, which indicate the transformation of quartz crystal from a minor to a major nonmetal. Lundl has shown that the value of quartz-crystal exports from Brazil is now about equal to that of phosphate rock produced domestically in 1941 and actually exceeds the combined value of crude feldspar, gypsum and fluorspar production in the United States in the same year. This great expansion under wartime pressure was not accomplished without some anxious moments, but all the demands of industry have been met and the Government has been able also to accumulate a substantial stock pile of material against future contingencies. Inspection and Grading of Quartz Crystal The swift growth of the quartz-oscillator industry necessitated the simultaneous evolution of methods and criteria for inspecting and grading quartz crystal. It has been found that, generally speaking, it is economically feasible to cut only crystals that are at least 30 per cent by volume free from major defects such as optical and electrical twinning, cracks and fractures. Blue needles, bubbles, "chuva" and other minor imperfections can be tolerated in the usable portion unless present in great excess. The present marketing system in use in both Brazil and the United States, as far as quality is concerned, depends solely on the "usability" of a crystal, which is defined in the Brazilian-American agreement2

Creep of copper under 75 to 1.50 kg per sq cm stresses at temperatures near the melting point was found to he a complex reaction controlled by three mechanisms acting in parallel. In order of appearance with decreasing temperature, the auerage activation energies, Qc , are 168, 79, and 24 kcal per mole. Stress dependence of the minimum creep rate was found to he an exponential for the two high-Qc processes and a power law for the low-Qc, process. Transition of control occurs from one mechanism to another. The relative transition temperature depends upon the applied stress, and the range oiler which the transition occurs depends upon the difference in the activation energies of the mechanisms. The creep behavior at high temperature is explained by the climb of dislocations through thermally or mechanically formed jogs, CREEP in pure fcc metals at temperatures in excess of one half the absolute melting point is normally controlled by dislocation c1imb.1,2 A climb model which seems applicable, according to an extensive analysis of data,3 was derived by Weert-man.4 This model assumes jog-saturated dislocations and predicts an activation energy, Qc, nearly equal to that for self-diffusion, USd. Although the requirement of jog saturation is restrictive, agreement between theory and experiment seems adequate. Many other theoretical treatments, including an early model by Mott,5 include detailed consideration of jog formation as an initial requirement for climb. These models predict activation energies for creep which differ from those of self-diffusion. Seeger6,7 postulates an observed activation energy related to the stacking-fault energy. Thus, Usd <Qc<5Usd + Uj where Uj is the jog-formation energy. Seeger incorporated qualitatively the influence of the relative numbers of thermal and athermal jogs. Expanding this concept, Shoeck8 explicitly states a function based on formation mode and relative numbers of vacancies: e r ci exp {-uf/k T} exp {-Um/k T} [ 1 ] where Uf and Um are energies of vacancy formation and migration, respectively. The concentration of jogs, Cj, depends upon the manner of jog production. For intersection jogs, Cj is not sensitive E. R. GILBERT, Junior Member AIME, formerly with De- to temperature; for thermal jogs, Cj is proportional to exp {—Uj /k T}. Schoeck regards each mode as a distinct mechanism; therefore, the mechanisms may act together.299 The diversity predicted by theory, surprisingly, has not been substantiated by experimental results. A significant investigation must include the extremes in stacking-fault energy. Extensive creep studies of aluminum10 and nickel,11,12 high stacking-fault energy metals, have been made. Comparable studies on a low stacking-fault energy metal, such as copper, have not. It is the purpose of this paper to report the results of an investigation of the creep of copper under conditions which favor thermal jogs. EXPERIMENTAL Cylindrical compression creep specimens (0.240 in. in diameter by 0.400 in. long) were machined from cold-drawn rods of electrolytic tough-pitch copper containing 0.0007 Mg, 0.002 Fe, 0.001 Ni, 0.0005 Ag, Cd < 0.005, and Pb < 0.005 wt pct impurities. Undetected spectrographically was a nominal 0.04 wt pct 0, which occurs as a Cu2O constituent distributed discontinuously at grain boundaries. Vacuum annealing at 900°C for 15 min produced a stable 0.03-mm average grain diameter. Testing was carried out using apparatus similar to that described by sherby,13 modified by enclosing platens and a push rod in a vacuum cylinder. Normally this arrangement resulted in pressures less than 10 Only a slight surface tarnish, less than 0.0005 in. in thickness, occurred during the test. The applied stress, corrected for atmospheric pressure, was maintained within 2 pct of the desired true stress by the addition of lead shot at fixed strain increments. Creep strain was measured with dial gages as a relative displacement of the upper and lower platens; accuracy of measurement was 0.0001 in. Two creep-test methods were used, the differential or cyclic temperature14 and the isothermal, to obtain creep data at stress levels of 150, 100, and 75 kg per sq cm over the temperature range of 620° to 1032°C. Minimum creep rates were used from both test methods; this was considered proper because comparable temperature tests or cycling to the same temperature gave the same creep rate, within experimental error. The cold vacuum test chamber, with the unstressed specimen in place, was heated to temperature by placing a preheated furnace over the chamber. Temperature equilibrium was attained within 30 min. For the cyclic tests, the stress was removed during the 5 to 10 min necessary to effect the temperature change and re-

A report is given of electrical analog experiments on the effect of casing perforation completions on well productivity for ideal uniform reservoirs under steady state homogeneous fluid flow conditions. Graphical results are presented for the effect of perforations of different densities and various degrees of penetration into the formation surrounding the casing or cement sheath. The latter range from perforations which terminate flush with the casing to those which extend into the formation a distance equal to the casing diameter. For the special case where the perforations terminate immediately beyond the casing with semi-spherical protrusions the electrical analog results correct and supersede previously reported theoretical calculations. It is found that the penetration of the perforations into the surrounding productive section may so increase the resultant productivity as to approach or even exceed that for open hole completions. INTRODUCTION A theoretical analysis of the effect of casing perforation on well completion, without additional penetration of the formation, was reported several years ago.&apos; In this treatment the perforations were represented by mathematical sinks and no explicit account was taken of the imperviousness to flow of the casing in which the perforations were made. This procedure was justified by consideration of the mutual interference between the sinks, which seemed to indicate that the analytical method automatically eliminated flow across the casing radius between the perforations. However, both further theoretical investigation and the electrical analog measurements described below showed that this assumption in the previously developed theory was not valid and that the calculated well capacities would considerably exceed the correct values. § Even if this simplifying assumption were retained the generalization of the theory to situations where the perforations extend into the producing formation would be extremely difficult. On the other hand, the electrolytic model analog of this type of steady-state homogenous fluid system is, in principle, so simple that it has not been worthwhile to attempt to develop the exact analysis even for the more limited case of strict casing perforation. The whole problem has therefore been studied anew by electrical models to cover the range from holes in the casing which terminate flush with the casing surface to such as extend into the surrounding rock to a depth equal to the casing diameter. It is to be expected that the productivity of a well completed with casing radius* rw, perforated with holes of radius Tp, and extending to depths d into the surrounding rock, would depend primarily on the dimensionless geometrical parameters Te Tw TP d of the system, such as —, —, — , and —, where re is the Tw, a a rw external boundary radius and a is the mean vertical separation between the perforations. It will also depend, of course, on the number of perforation lines or total perforation density. While such parameters automatically control analytical treatments, it would require a very extensive series of model experiments to fully disclose their functional effect on the well productivity. For practical purposes, however, a rather limited range of the variables suffices to give the effects of interest. Accordingly, in the experimental study reported here the casing diameter has been kept fixed? at six in., the perforation diameter has been taken as either one-fourth in. or one-half in., their density has been varied from one to eight per ft, and their penetration into the formation has ranged from zero to six in., with a primary scaling factor of one to six. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD AND RESEARCH Although electrolytic model experiments have been made for years, there still seems to be some question as to what set of conditions will give the best results. For this reason a number of electrode materials and electrolytes were tried. Those chosen for the final experiments were copper electrodes and a weak copper sulphate solution as the electrolyte. This &apos;Assuming that the casing has been cemented with a uniform and impermeable cement sheath, the effective casing radius is to be interpreted as the external radius of the cement annulus. It is also assumed here that the casing is set through the complete producing section that it is perforated throughout with a uniform density and that tie formation has a a and isotropic permeability. As noted later, however, a uniform scale change permits reinterpreting the primary measurements to correspond to a casing diameter of 12 in.

The layer growth method has been used to investigate the reaction kinetics of liquid titanium and hafnium with carbon and the [liq] - [liq + TiC] and [liq] - [liq + HfC] phase boundaries at temperatures above 1800°C. The equipment and experimental procedures used in this investigation are basically identical to those described in an earlier paper&apos; on the Zr-C reaction. Temperature control, however, was improved significantly by connecting a Latronics Colo-Ratio automatic pyrometer and a controller to the power source. The subsequent temperature variations were ±10°C; previously ±20°C was obtained using manual controls. The absolute accuracy of the pyrometer, however, must be considered to be only ±40°C.* The spectrographic analyses of the materials used in this study are listed in Table I. The isothermal reactions of titanium (1800° to 2700°C) and hafnium (2300" to 3000°C) with carbon (graphite crucibles) resulted in the formation of carbon-saturated liquid metal and layers of Tic and HfC, respectively. The thicknesses of the carbide layers, determined from metallographic measurements at 100 times, as a function of carburization time and temperature are given in Figs. 1 and 2. At each temperature, parabolic growth behavior for these reactions was observed and could be expressed as x2 =Kpt, where X is scale thickness (corrected for heating and coolingL), Kp the parabolic growth constant, and t the isothermal carburization time. Values of Kp as a function of temperature for the carbides are shown in Fig. 3 and listed in Table 11. The growth constants are expressible as: kpTiC = 0.2 exp(-61,800/RT) sq cm per sec for Tic and Kp HfC = 2.62 exp(-95,300/RT) sq cm per sec for HfC. The liquidus phase boundaries were determined from metal samples treated in graphite crucibles for different times ranging from 4 to 100 min at each of the temperatures indicated in Table 11. Metallographic examination revealed that the carbide precipitates were distributed uniformly throughout the frozen metal matrices. This is attributed to the rapid cooling rates (800°C per min) and the small difference in density between the precipitated carbide and the liquid metal.

FOR many years the mining of coal and other minerals occurring in sedimentary formation has been planned according to information obtained by diamond drilling. Placer mines have used churn drills for sampling and estimating deposits, and some metal mines have used the method either wholly or in part. The diamond drill method, therefore, although not entirely new, has come into more prominence in the last few years. Several large-scale developments now being planned or in the production stage have used this method in varying degree. This paper will describe the operations of the Howe Sound Exploration Co., Ltd. at Snow Lake, Manitoba, where a gold mine was developed and equipped for mining and milling wholly on the basis of diamond drilling results. The property has been in operation nearly 3 years, so that results can be compared with the estimates and assumptions made from the diamond drilling. In developing the subject it is necessary to outline as briefly as possible the normal method of mining, from discovery to production stage. Table I sets forth these various stages, the methods of financing, the percentage of total cost, and the relative time interval required for each section of the work. The plan presented in this table cannot be applied to all mining developments, but it gives a basis on which to work. In Stages 2 and 3 the investment is moderate, and if the property does not respond favorably the options or interests can be terminated. Stage 4 represents a sizeable investment, and it is more difficult to drop the property after this part of the operation is completed. Stages 2, 3, and 4 may be repeated several times by different groups or companies before Stage 5 is reached, but when Stage 5 has been started the total capital investment must be provided and there can be no turning back. It will be noted that there is a total of 116 units of investment in the overall cost if one company proceeds with Stages 2, 3, 4, and 5 in order. Stage 4, however, consumes time which is important when markets are being considered. Bringing a property into production when metal prices are low is much more difficult than when the prices are high, and if this stage can be set aside production is attained more quickly. When Stage 4 is eliminated the total becomes 86 units of cost for Stages 2, 3, and 5, but an adjustment of 14 units must be added to Stage 5. These 14 units represent the useable value of Stage 4. Thus Stage 4 represents an investment of 30 units if carried on before Stage 5, but 14 units if included with Stage 5. This is accounted for by the fact that development work can be accomplished more cheaply under Stage 5, since everything that is done is planned on a production basis with permanent services. Stage 4 must of necessity be governed by expenditures, and a great many temporary services, including housing and power plants, must be provided. The prospect shaft is a small one, and drifts,

An investigation of the d-phase relationships between the uranium-zirconium and uranium-molybdenum systems was conducted. A ternary cut joining U-31.5 at. pct Mo to U-74 at. pct Zr is presented on the basis of differential thermal analysis, metallographic and X-ray diffraction data. HyDothetical isothermal ternary sections, inferred from the determined d-phase relationships, are presented for the uraniztm-zirconium-molybdenum system. A ternary eutectoid, at 454ºC, was found in zirconium-rich alloys. Its composition, based on metallography and electron-beam micro-analysis, is estimated as U-61.7 at. pct Zr-7.1 at. pct Mo. URANIUM binary systems have been studied extensively in the past to supply basic information needed in reactor-fuel development. Alloys of uranium with zirconium, molybdenum, and titanium are of particular interest because, in these binaries, extensive or complete solid solubility between the body-centered-cubic forms of these elements and y uranium exists. In addition, an intermediate phase of limited solid solubility forms in each of these systems by transformation of the high-temperature ?-uranium phase. Previous investigation of the phase relationships existing between the intermediate 6 phases in the uranium-zirconium-titanium and the uranium-molyb- denum-titanium ternaries have already been reported.1,2 The results of an investigation of the phase relationships existing between the 6 phases in the uranium-zirconium-molybdenum system is reported here. The phase equilibria that occur in the solid-state portions of the pertinent binary systems are shown in Fig. 1. Phase nomenclature appearing throughout the report is as shown in these diagrams. The crystal structure of the phases in this system are given in Table I. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Alloys were cast and fabricated to 1/4-in.-diam rod. Specimens were heat treated and examined by metallographic and X-ray techniques. Thermal-analysis data were obtained.

THE Cuajone porphyry copper deposit is the northernmost of a group of three deposits in southern Peru controlled by the Southern Peru Copper Corp.-Toquepala, Quelleveco, and Cuajone- all within a 20-mile belt. Although small pockets of high-grade copper oxide ores were worked in the Cuajone area in the 19th century, it was not until 1939 that its potentialities as a disseminated deposit were recognized by O. C. Schmedeman. An exploratory drilling program was begun in December 1942 and continued until early 1945. The program was revived in November 1952 and completed early in 1954. Early exploration was by diamond drilling. Later exploration was predominantly churn drilling, with diamond drilling used only for wildcat holes.

I wonder where all the particles come from that lie between the resolving power of the microscope and 0.7 micron, which are seen under a microscope in examining a sample of grind? There is also introduced the idea of excess fines; this is all right in itself but the author&apos;s quantitative definition seems to be virtually impossible to justify, and, moreover, is obscure. Just why E, the excess fines, should he defined as the distance between an F line and a y line is hard to follow, and just where the distance should be measured does not appear to be stated, as it should be since the F and y lines intersect and the distance between will depend upon where that distance is measured. The basis of the presentation is the relation of log weight against log size that was "discovered" by Schuhmann. While this relation is implied to fit, the only evidence that I can see is a slightly irregular line in Fig. x between 2 per cent and 18 per cent by weight and then a precipitous drop at 18 per cent away from any sort of straight line. Some of the conclusions are rather startling. It is stated that E, the excess fines, remains constant for all the comminution products of any particular material, except that it may decrease for some coarse crusher products. No reason is given for this assertion. One would, on the contrary, expect that excess fines, if such a concept is permissible, would generally vary with different conditions instead of being constant. Again, "as much net energy is required to reduce a ton of quartz to particles of the grind-limit diameter (namely, of course, 0.7 micron) by grinding as is required to melt the quartz." This would require many data to prove, but no proof is given; any consideration would reveal the impossibility of such a result. Still further, ore samples "ground to widely different sizes, and with different circulating loads and different size distributions or product, show the same production of new surface area per revolution of the mill, when this grind limit is used." This statement is confuted by ordinary experience, which teaches that grinding efficiency varies generally with the condition of material. THE greatly enlarged demand for small sizes of seamless copper tube which has recently occurred, due particularly to the rapid growth of the electric household-refrigerator industry, has emphasized the superiority of phosphorized to tough pitch copper for the purpose of producing this commodity. In the manufacture of this material exceedingly heavy reductions by cold drawing are employed, customary practice involving as much as 90 per cent. reduction of cross-sectional area in four runs without intermediate annealing. Although this superiority has long been recognized by tube makers, no quantitative expression of it has heretofore been published. It is believed that the data herewith presented will serve this purpose. Recent investigators are not in agreement as to the relative mechanical properties of copper containing small amounts of oxygen as compared with copper containing sufficient oxygen to produce that condition known as tough pitch. Hanson, Marryat and Ford&apos; found that "oxygen has a relatively small effect on the properties of copper." Johnson,2 on the contrary, states "it cannot be denied that it (tough pitch copper) is inferior, to deoxidized copper where severe mechanical manipulation is concerned." These authorities in the reports of their investigations, as might be expected from their conclusions, do not present data of a character requisite to a conclusive determination of the question.

THE war effort has furnished the necessary impetus for better magnesium foundry practice. Four or five years ago, there were but a few formulas in general use for cores and mixtures for magnesium castings. Certain sands, binders, and inhibitors were specified and the proportions of these materials in each mixture were maintained between very narrow limits. As more and more war industries entered the field, much research was carried out and methods and practices were improved. Magnesium founding is still in a state of flux; therefore it is not uncommon to find one foundry spraying inhibitors on its cores, and another foundry using sand mixtures with incorporated protective agents. The basic core or dry-sand mold mixture for magnesium in use today is compounded with sand, core oil or resin binder, cereal, and moisture. Core oil or resin binder are added for baked strength while the cereal binder and moisture are for green strength. The normal mixtures (based on the weight of the sand) contain from 0.5 to 1.5 per cent of both cereal binder and core oil, and the moisture content varies between 1.5 and 5 per cent. The ratio of core oil to cereal binder varies from 60:40 to 40:60, while the correct amount of moisture depends upon the method of coremaking. PROTECTIVE AGENTS In all magnesium practice, protective agents are used in conjunction with the core and molding sands to prevent oxidation of the metal. The use of these inhibitors is not novel, but publications covering this field are not entirely adequate. Beck1 says Magnesium alloys decompose water to form magnesium oxide, hydrogen being liberated in the process (Mg + H20 -+ H21 + MgO). This reaction results in the blackening of the skin and the appearance of areas of porosity on the casting surface, the cavities of which are filled with a grey oxide powder (these are termed `burns&apos;). Although sand cores for magnesium castings are thoroughly dried during the baking cycle, burning will take place on the castings unless the metal is protected properly. This type of burning is more difficult to define than the "water-magnesium" reaction cited by Beck. A possible explanation may lie in the following equation: 2Mg + 02 -s 2MgO Here, the source of the oxygen is not water, but the air in the mold cavity, together with the chemically combined oxygen in the core-binding media. Generally, two methods are used to prevent this reaction from taking place.

THE rate of output of a rock crusher is based upon a certain space relation, the calculation requiring that the size and position of the jaws, the principle of motion, and the speed of the machine be known. The result is a calculated maximum output. The purpose of this paper is to develop a method of calculating this maximum output, to judge the general applicability A utility of such a calculation, and, so far as possible, to record calculated values as a basis for the comparison of actual results, or for estimating the capacity of a new crusher or of a standard crusher working under new conditions. A method for calculating the capacity of crushing rolls, which has been in common use for a long time, is well presented by R. H. Richards.1 The output is conceived as a ribbon of rock, of which the breadth, thickness and length are governed respectively by the width of the rolls, the space, between them, and their peripheral velocity. The weight of the rock thus crushed in a given time can be calculated from its specific gravity, after applying a factor representing the percentage of voids in the hypothetical ribbon. The calculation of crusher capacity is made in a somewhat similar manner. While the action of rolls is simple, with few irregularities in operating conditions, in rock crushers the material advances intermittently, usually under the force of gravity alone, and is subjected to a variety of variable conditions. The effect of these variable influences upon&apos; the calculation of capacity is now to be shown. In this paper, capacity will be discussed quite apart from any consideration of mechanical efficiency; that is, results will be stated not in terms of output per horsepower, but of output for a given machine when operated at a known speed, constructed and adjusted to receive material of a known size, and to yield a product having a definite maximum coarseness.

Each of the three refining furnaces in use at Great Falls is provided with a waste-heat boiler. The general arrangement of furnace and boiler is as shown in Fig. 1. Two of the furnaces have hearths 45 ft. 7 in. by 14 ft. 6 in.; the third has a hearth 46 ft. 101/2 in. long and of the same width as the other two. The furnaces at present are equipped for firing with natural gas. As originally constructed two of the furnaces had hearths 36 by 14 ft., and were designed to use coal on grates, but these furnaces were lengthened and fired successively with pulverized coal and oil. The third furnace was added in 1926 and was oil-fired until 1928. Since that year natural gas has been in use on all of the furnaces. The changes that have occurred in connection with furnace design and the comparative performance of the furnaces with various fuels were described1 by the author in 1932. Two of the furnaces are provided with Stirling class A-30 boiler. rated at 400 hp. and having 4008 sq. ft. of heating surface. The thir furnace has a class A-21 Stirling waste-heat boiler rated at 300 hp. with 2805 sq. ft. of heating surface. The boilers are not baffled. The waste-heat boilers are placed on a platform 17 ft. 3 in. above the level of the furnace charge floor. The waste gases from the furnace pass by a vertical uptake flue, 4 by 3 ft. inside at the point where it enters the chamber, to a brick chamber from which the gases pass over a bridge wall and into the boiler setting. The uptake flue and chamber are constructed of silica brick. Each furnace has a steel stack 125 ft. high, measured from the boiler floor. The stacks have a 41/2-in. firebrick lining and are 5 ft. in diameter
