This study showed that diametral point-load testing performed parallel to the bedding planes of highly anisotropic sedimentary rocks produced inconsistent results that cannot be used to accurately estimate uniaxial compressive strength. Axial point-load values from tests performed normal to bedding planes and evaluated by the T500 index produce good correlations with the uniaxial compressive strength values obtained for five different rock types. A strong correlation also existed between the moisture content and the uniaxial compressive strength of the tested lithologies. A combination of axial point-load and moisture content indices produces the best correlation with the uniaxial compressive strength test results.

THE ease and value of the application of spectrum analysis to industrial chemistry appears to be appreciated in few of the large works laboratories of this country. For 8 years, this analysis has been of great value to the authors in both analytical and metallurgical work. To the analyst the complete qualitative analysis of an unknown alloy, revealed by a spectrogram, is a sure basis for the planning of the most direct and rapid method of attack. As the determination of each element proceeds, the purity of precipitates may be checked as often as desired. The spectrograph proves invaluable in the recognition of impurities, the separation of which would entail a lengthy and difficult procedure, or when the weight of an unknown is less than is necessary to complete the desired determinations. A few hundredths of a gram will usually suffice for spectrographic analysis. In the separation of the rarer elements, the spectrograph will show, with precision, the point where each step has been successful. In zinc of certain classes, indium, gallium, and germanium have been isolated in this way; the presence of antimony in lake coppers has been proved; and bismuth has been detected in zinc and in alloys where the presence of a few thousandths of a per cent. would be harmful. An antimony precipitate in a delicate determination may contain a considerable proportion of tin or arsenic, both of which will be revealed. The spectrograph is consequently important to the metallurgist as well as to the analyst.

Activity on the part of Local Sections should be recognized and stimulated by appropriation of funds from the Institute's treasury; and these appropriations should be as. large as is consistent with the relative needs for other activities. 3. As between different Sections, the amount of such appropriations should be based primarily on the extent of activities as reflected in the number and character of meetings held and the attendance of the members at such meetings. 4. In making a request for funds for any year, the officers of a Local Section should submit a report on the printed form approved by the Directors at their meeting on November 19, 1937. 5. A standing Committee on Local Section Appropriations, consisting of one past Chairman of a Local Section, one member of the Institute's Executive Committee, and one member of the Finance Committee, shall be appointed by the President and shall pass upon requests for appropriations and authorize payments within bounds of the budget. The committee will be guided by the principles herein outlined, always having in mind the vital importance of healthy, active Sections to the, welfare of the Institute as a whole. 6. According to Article XI, Section 2 of the Bylaws, requests for appropriations shall be signed by the Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer of the Section. 7. Requests for appropriations must be in the hands of the Secretary of the Institute by February 15 of the year for which they are desired.

With the advent of water-flooding into active commercial usage in half a dozen areas in the Mid-Continent, the process passes the experimental stage and joins other methods and processes now in use which have been found suitable in one oil field or another in securing a more profitable production than has existed heretofore. The use of the air-gas lift, acidization, pressure maintenance and repressuring have presented their problems in economics and engineering during their introduction and extended application. When a new field is discovered or attention is turned to an old producing area in which these methods have not been considered, it is to be expected that these problems again arise. While some information is available as to the results obtained by water-flooding in a few localities in the Mid-Continent, the extrapolation of the sand data on which the results are based, for even generalized use in other areas and fields in the region, is hazardous. It is precarious to assume that the same physical condition will obtain in a sand over more than small, special areas. This paper is concerned with a brief presentation of such data as are available to the authors on existing operations, a survey of the region and extent to which application of the method seems most likely to be made, an estimation of the crude reserve existing for such operations, suggestions as to the importance of core analysis in guarding against uncontrolled floods and its usefulness in predicting ultimate recoveries, and comment on some of the economic phases involved. These subjects, as concerned with water-flooding in the East (notably Bradford, Pennsylvania), have been discussed in detail in the literature and are generally well known. Especially is this true of discussions of the mechanical equipment and various lease layouts and development patterns for water-flooding.

The vacuum tin-fusion method of analysis for hydrogen, developed by Carney, Chipman, and Grant, has been modified to permit the analysis of the evolved gases for hydrogen by means of a thermal conductivity cell. A properly prepared sample can be analyzed in 10 min with a probable error of ±0.12 ppm. A study of various methods for storage of hydrogen samples shows that samples can be safely held in a dry ice-acetone bath as long as six days. Storage in liquid nitrogen is necessary for samples to be held one week or more. HE vacuum tin-fusion method, as developed by I- Carney, Chipman and Grant,' is the only analytical procedure which has shown promise of being fast enough for use in the control of hydrogen during steelmaking. It was felt that further simplification and faster speed of operation could be effected by the use of thermal conductivity measurements for analysis of the gases evolved in the tin-fusion method. The application of conductivity measurements to the tin-fusion method is possible because: 1—the evolved gas is essentially a mixture of hydrogen, nitrogen and carbon monoxide with a hydrogen content usually over 50 pct, 2—the evolved gas is collected at a relatively low pressure, and 3— the thermal conductivities of CO and N2 are practically identical while that of hydrogen is very much greater. The major part of this research program was devoted to the construction and calibration of a vacuum tin-fusion apparatus which analyzes the evolved gases for hydrogen by means of a thermal conductivity cell. The second phase of the problem was associated with the development of a procedure for storage of samples prior to analysis. With the rapid quenching method for hydrogen sampling,' which seems to be the most practical for steel mill use, it is necessary that the samples be stored safely during the interval between sampling and analysis if the hydrogen content of the molten metal is to be maintained in the supersaturated solid samples. The thermal conductivity bridge has been used for a number of years in the analysis of certain gas mixtures. An elementary discussion of the theory and practice of gas analysis by thermal conductivity measurements is given by Minter.3 A more comprehensive discussion of the theory and of the various measuring circuits is presented by Daynes.' A complete knowledge of the theory and properties of the thermal conductivity of gases and gaseous mixtures can be gained by a study of the standard textbooks on the kinetic theory of gases."' The existing data on the thermal conductivity of single gases are reviewed by Hawkins: that for a number of binary gas mixtures by Daynes' and Lindsay." The thermal conductivity method may be applied to the determination of the composition of a binary mixture if: 1—the thermal conductivity of the mixture varies monotonically with composition, and 2— the two gases have measurably different thermal conductivities. The greater the difference between the two gases, the greater the sensitivity of the method.10 he method is applicable to the analysis of multicomponent mixtures when all of the gases in the mixture except one have nearly the same thermal conductivity. Fortunately, the mixture of hydrogen, nitrogen, and carbon monoxide evolved by the tin-fusion analysis' falls in this latter classification. The thermal conductivities of nitrogen and carbon monoxide are practically equal; and the thermal conductivity of hydrogen is approximately seven times that of the other two. Therefore, the thermal conductivity of a gaseous mixture of hydrogen, nitrogen, and carbon monoxide at known temperature and pressure can be related directly to the percentage of hydrogen in the mixture by suitable calibration. Usually the thermal conductivity of a mixture of gases is measured at atmospheric pressure where the thermal conductivity is independent of pressure over a wide pressure range. At very low pressures (below 1 mm Hg), the thermal conductivity of gases varies with the pressure. This phenomenon has been utilized in the Pirani vacuum gage for the measurement of pressures in the range of 10" to 10-0 mm of mercury.= Very little has been published concerning the variation of thermal conductivity with pressure at intermediate pressures between 1 mm Hg and 1 atm. However, preliminary measurements indicated that the thermal conductivities did vary with pressure over the range of pressures (up to 10 mm Hg) at which gases are delivered from the vacuum pump. Therefore, the calibration of the thermal conductivity cell had to be planned to include the effects of both gas composition and pressure. Such a calibration chart is shown in Fig. 4. The susceptibility of quenched and aged Zr-2.5 wt pct Nb alloy to embritt2ement during irradiation has been examined for a number of solution temperatures and aging times. Material quenched from temperatures approximately 40°C below the transus has high tensile ductility, and this ductility is insensitive to aging at 500°C or to irradiation. If, however, the material is quenched from temperatures above the transus it becomes highly susceptible to loss of ductility either from aging at 500 or from irradiation. Inter granular failure is characteristic of the materials having low ductility. The distribution of the equilibrium phase is found to control the susceptibility to embrittlement by restricting 6 grain growth during heat treatment and thus influencing crack propagation. IN zirconium, as in titanium, -stabilizing alloy additions are used to obtain high strengths via quench and age heat treatments, and the Zr-2.5 pct Nb alloy has been developed1 because of its strength advantage over the Zircaloys. Early in the development of the Zr-2.5 pct Nb alloy the problem of 13 embrittlement was appreciated, and for this reason the solution temperature was chosen below the p transus.' In the course of irradiation studies on quenched and aged Zr-2.5 wt pct Nb alloy it was found' that irradiation introduced an important aspect of p embrittlement, riz., material quenched from the phase and aged 24 hr at 500°C was severely embrittled by moderate doses of neutron irradiation. This effect had not been studied in titanium alloys. In titanium the metallurgical features leading to 0 ernbrittlement were found to be structures with: a) coarse a platelets at the grain bondaries, b) finely dispersed a uniformly distributed throughout the (0) matrix,6 c) Widmanstatten a-13 with more than 50 pct P, d) the presence of some metastable p transformation products,3 and e) large prior -phase grain size.5 Alternatively, the presence of a uniform distribution of coarse a was conducive to high ductility and a structure largely of equiaxed a was very dctile. The detailed mechanisms of the embrittlement have not been worked out for all of these conditions, although weakness at either a-matrix boundaries or prior p grain boundaries have been prominent in the eculation. It was proposed that acicular a might act as a mild notch, and low ductility has been associated with easy fracture along its boundary.' There have been two opposing suggestions for the source of the high ductility associated with equiaxed a phase. JaffeeB proposed that this a would accept a large por- tion of the oxygen, thus increasing the ductility of the matrix, whereas after study of a Zr-Nb-Cu alloy Weinstein and oltz proposed that the a phase, softer than the martensitic matrix, acted to blunt cracks formed in the matrix. In the present work we have studied the effect of neutron irradiation on the ductility, particularly the P embrittlement, of the Zr-2.5 wt pct Nb alloy. By a variation of solution temperature and aging time a variety of metallurgical conditions have been examined, and a range of resultant ductilities obtained. The ductility has been related to the material microstructure and mode of fracture. EXPERIMENTAL The alloy used in the present work came from two separate ingots fabricated into rod of 3/8 or i in. diam, Table I. For both batches the P transus temperature was approximately 890° C. Most of the heat treatments were done directly on lengths of the j} in. diam rod, after which the tensile test specimens were machined. Quenching was achieved by dropping rods from a dynamic vacuum into water, the cooling rate estimated to be 2 100°C per sec. For aging the rods were encapsulated in evacuated silica tubes. Round tensile test specimens, with gage diam and length 0.160 and 1.0 in., respectively, were used throughout and pulled at room temperature or 300°C on Instron tensile machines, at a crosshead speed of 0.05 ipm. Specimens were irradiated in the NRX and NRU reactors, in facilities described in previous publications.'0 The metallurgical conditions examined have been: All tensile test specimens were machined with axes in the axial direction of the swaged rod. Although the specimen had a degree of preferred crystallo-graphic orientation with basal plane normals both parallel with and perpendicular to the tensile axis, the material was comparatively isotropic." With the greatly expanding use of magnesium during the war, it appeared necessary to the War Metallurgy Committee that procedures of heat treating common magnesium casting alloys be investigated systematically. Accordingly, the National Defense Research Committee of the Office of Scientific Research and Development placed a research contract with the University of California, supervised by the War Metallurgy Committee. Research on the solution heat treatment and aging of magnesium alloy AZg2, (formerly ASTM No. 17; also known as Dowmetal C or AM26o) which was done under "Restricted" Project NRC-2I, in 1942-1943, and reported in detail in a final report to the OSRD on September 3, 1943, is the basis of this paper, which has been released for publication by the OSRD. American experience with magnesium alloys prior to World War II was limited, although some of these alloys had been in commercial use since 1909. Requirements of the aircraft industry for light alloys made it imperative to understand and utilize the advantageous strength-weight properties of magnesium castings. Magnesium casting alloys are commonly solution heat- treated to increase their ultimate tensile strength and ductility; this treatment may be followed by an age hardening at elevated temperatures, which raises the tensile yield strength but diminishes the ductility. In the present investigation, AZp was studied to determine the effects on properties of various solution heat treatment and aging schedules. The principles of heat treatment of magnesium alloys are the same as for other non-ferrous alloys. The alloy studied, AZp, has a nominal composition of 9 pct aluminum, 2 pct zinc, and minor constituents. Fig I shows, by the projection of isothermal sections on the concentration plane, the solubility surface1 of the ternary magnesium-rich solid solutions as determined by X ray 'analysis. From this figure it may be seen that above approximately 375°C (707OF), AZp alloy is a single phase alloy at equilibrium; below this temperature the equilibrium condition is a two phase alloy. The beta constituent which precipitates from the solid solution exerts a hardening effect. Because the zinc concentration is only 2 pct, ancl because of its solubility relations, AZqz resembles a binary alloy of magnesium with aluminum. The solubility curve1 of Fig 2 shows how rapidly the solubility of the beta phase decreases with decreasing temperatures. Unlike many aluminum alloys, magnesium alloys do not age harden at room temperatures; precipitation hardening of AZ² alloy is performed at about 177°C (350°F). J. V. N. DORR, New York, N. Y.-I have read Mr. Eames' excellent paper on this' subject with great interest, for besides being connected with the design and installation of the first modern countercurrent decantation plant, he was associated with me in the development of the thickener in the Black Hills some years earlier, and has now been operating the largest plant that has used this method of treatment. His, discussion, of the influence of different factors on the results obtained is quite thorough, but several features I think may not be apparent to the reader who has not studied the subject carefully. 1. Grade of Ore That Can Be Treated.-Mr. Eames has shown graphically that' the assay of all solutions increases directly as the grade of the ore treated. He has not emphasized, however, the fact that, as most operators prefer to keep the assay of pregnant solutions down below a certain figure in order to insure complete precipitation, an increase in ore value beyond a certain point means a proportional increase in solution precipitated and therefore not only an increase in the percentage of dissolved gold recovered, but an actual descrease in tailing loss. The importance of the influence of the percentage of moisture in the underflow on loss is made clear, and I. may add that unless it is quite evident that pulp can be safely settled to 50 per cent. solids, or more, it is usually advisable to use a continuous filter at the end of. a decantation plant to reduce losses in cyanide and gold. Dissolution in Thickeners.-The influence of a change of solution on silver dissolution has long been emphasized and most gold operators have. recognized the annoying way in which a gold ore after being agitated until nothing more can be dissolved will loosen up again when almost ready for the dump after the dissolved metal has been removed by decantation or filtration. Continuous decantation gives favorable conditions for this additional dissolution and a chance to recover most of what is thus dissolved. This is especially true if an extra tank is used in the series and barren solution added at the second tank from the end instead, of the first, as shown in Mr. Eames' Fig. 1. It can be calculated that the use of this tank will reduce the mechanical loss of cyanide by one-third and cut the gold loss as well; but the saving in gold or silver that may dissolve when the pulp is first diluted with weak solution may be as important.

The solubility of nitrogen in liquid binary and ternary Fe-Ni-Co alloys has been measured by the Sieverts' method between 1550°and 1700°C. Solubility data and standard free energzes and enthalpies of solution for nitrogen in the alloys are presented. Interaction parameters are discussed and presented for binary and ternary alloys. MOST of the studies of nitrogen solubility in liquid metals have been directed toward the dilute alloys of iron. Several of these investigations have included measurements of the nitrogen solubility in Fe-Ni al10s'- and in Fe-Co alloys.435 There has been some work, however, that has extended across the e-i-" and F-CO" binaries. This investigation was undertaken to determine the nitrogen solubility in both binary and ternary alloys of the Fe-Ni-Co system. It was also hoped that the differences between earlier studies might be resolved. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD This investigation was made using a Sieverts' apparatus described previously." The nickel (99.85 pct) and cobalt (99.9 pct) were obtained from Sherritt-Gordon Mines, Ltd., and the iron (99.95 pct) was Fer-rovac-E obtained from Crucible Steel Co. Recrystal-lized alumina crucibles were used throughout the entire investigation with no evidence of crucible-melt reaction. Melt temperatures were measured with an optical pyrometer and the temperature scale calibrated against the melting points of the three pure metals. The emissivity of the melt was assumed to be a linear function of composition for all alloys, as has been shown for Fe-Ni alloys.lZ The emissivity of the pure metals at 1600°C were taken as 0.43 for iron, 0.44 for cobalt, and 0.45 for nickel. Using these emissivities, the trans mis sivity of the system was found to be 0.51 i 0.01. The Sieverts' method was used for this study and followed the procedures outlined previously.l' The individual metals were weighed to give about 100 g of alloy. The alloys were melted in the crucible under a partial pressure of argon. The system was evacuated, and the "hot volume" was measured with argon. To avoid the errors caused by vaporization, the melt was held under vacuum only long enough to ensure that all of the gas in the system had been removed. The influence of any small amount of vaporization on the "hot volume" was shown to be negligible by measuring the "hot volume" after a run. This measurement agreed with that made at the start of the run within the implicit error, 0.2 cc, caused by the limitations in accurately reading the buret. The solubility-pressure relationship was measured in the pure metals and in several alloy compositions throughout the ternary system. These measurements were made by admitting measured amounts of nitrogen to the system, and then determining the equilibrium nitrogen pressure above the melt. This method has the distinct advantage of higher accuracy, particularly at lower pressures, than measurements made by withdrawing gas from the system to reduce the pressure after determining the solubility at 1 atm nitrogen pressure. This latter method has a practical lower limit of about 0.4 atm where an increased error is encountered because the buret must be emptied to permit further measurements at lower pressures. By determining the relation between apparent solubility and pressure, it was possible to make a good estimate of the initial nitrogen content of the metal from the intercept of the solubility curve extrapolated to zero pressure.11 DISCUSSION The solubility data corrected to 1 atm nitrogen pressure are summarized in Table I. The reported solubility has been corrected for the initial nitrogen content of the alloys. The initial nitrogen contents fell between 0.0002 and 0.0010 wt pct, and were lower in the iron and nickel than in the cobalt. Sieverts' law was obeyed in all alloys at pressures up to 1 atm. Examples of this behavior are shown in Fig. 1. The reaction for solution of nitrogen is Taking the standard state as 1 wt pct N in the alloy and the reference state as nitrogen at infinite dilution in the alloy, and noting the adherence to Sieverts' law, K becomes the solubility of nitrogen in the alloy at 1 atm pressure. Thus the solubility data of Table I were used directly to calculate the standard free energy for the solution reaction. These results are also presented in Table I. The enthalpy of solution is also summarized in Table I as calculated from a form of the van't Hoff relation: Iron-Nickel System. The data for the solubility of nitrogen in liquid Fe-Ni binary alloys is presented in Fig. 2 along the with data of aito, Schenck et al.,' and Humbert and 1liott.l' The data for studies of nitrogen solubility in Fe-Ni alloys containing less than 20 pc t i'- are not presented in Fig. 2, although they are in good agreement with the present work. THE Christy Creek clay mine of the General Refractories Co., in the Olive Hill District, ranks with the most important producers in the north-eastern Kentucky fire clay field, both from production of high-grade flint clay, as well as unusual extent and thickness of deposit. The property is but one of a number controlled by the General Refractories Co. in this district, but is given first consideration among them by the operating staff. Its total area is over 5000 acres, owned in fee or by lease of clay mining rights, and although mining operations have been in progress for over five years, scarcely one per cent of the ground has been worked as yet. The mine is near the southwestern end of the clay field, which extends in a belt 12 miles wide and 55 miles long, in a southwestern direction from Kenova, W. Va., which, as the name indicates, is at the junction of Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia. Olive Hill, where there is one of the l1Ulin plants of the General Refractories Co., and to which the clay from the mine is shipped, is about 26 miles distant from the mine. Connection is made with the Chesapeake & Ohio R. R. by a spur line . 8 miles in length, owned and operated by the company.

The gravimetric-vacuum distillation method was developed to permit rapid and accurate determinations of the oil-water ratios of small samples or sands containing little oil. In addition, the samples usually are so well cleaned and so little altered by the distillation at reduced pressure that rapid estimations of other physical properties may be made with the evacuated cores. Requiring only elementary glass-blowing technique, the distilling tubes and traps used in determining oil-water ratios were easily fashioned from the usual glassware. A sketch and description are given of the necessary apparatus, including the cylindrical electrical heaters. The procedure, requiring about 40 min., consists in raising the temperature and maintaining it between 675' and 725°F. for at least 10 min. while the pressure is held between I and 2 mm. Hg. The fluids condensed in the trap (cooled by a mixture of kerosine and solid carbon dioxide) are separated in a centrifuge and the volume of water is recorded. Determination of changes in weight with an analytical balance of all parts of the apparatus permits computation of weight of oil distilled and total weight of oil recovered. Introduction In determining the oil-water ratios of core samples, distillation at atmospheric pressurel-5 has proved to be sufficiently reliable for samples containing moderate quantities of oil. Since small samples and sands with little oil are encountered, how- ever, it appeared advisable to develop a method that would be applicable under these circumstances. Thegravimetric-extraction procedure1,6-9 undoubtedly is very reliable and could be used in all tests, but the time consumed in the determination would often delay field operations. This would be especially true when dealing with tight sands or viscous oils, both of which retard the extraction process. Accordingly, the gravimetric-vacuum distillation method was developed in order to combine the good features of both of the older methods; that is, accuracy and speed. By reducing the pressure, it was found possible to perform the distillation at a temperature that permits the use of glass apparatus, all parts of which can be weighed on an analytical balance. Thus, the fluids may be removed quickly from the core, the water is readily trapped and measured, and the loss in weight of the core is easily determined. In addition, the total weight of material condensed in the distilling tube and in the trap provides a method of determining the oil-water ratio that is practically independent of the one involving the loss in weight of the sample. The use of vacuum not only permits as much accuracy as does the gravimetric-extraction process, but it actually allows an increase in speed over the atmospheric-distillation method, because of the time required to cool the metal pots from about 1200°F. between runs. More important yet, the innovation makes possible the almost immediate reporting of permeability, and saturation, which is impossible

The Huntington Beach oil field is on the Pacific Coast, southeast of the City of Los Angeles (Fig. 1). It lies both onshore and offshore. Most of the onshore section is operated by Standard Oil Co. of California, WOI. The Tar reservoir is of upper Pliocene age, about 200 ft thick, and consists principally of fine-grained, unconsolidated, somewhat shaly sand, with thin inter-bedded shale stringers throughout (Fig. 2). The reservoir is a broad, highly faulted, elongated anticline, with an areal extent of about 370 acres. Most of the faults bisecting the structure are normal, trend north-south, and are the main cause of reservoir discontinuity (Figs. 3 and 4). From 1964 to Dec., 1967, 259 steam stimulations were performed on a total of 125 Tar sand wells. Eighty-six new wells were drilled and steam stimulated. Of the total, 96 have been stimulated twice, 34 three times and 3 four times. During this same period, a two-injector steam drive pilot has been in progress. The response obtained from this project has been compared with the response to cyclic stimulation. This paper presents an analysis of the field observations for the two methods of thermal recovery. History of Development Drilling to the Tar pool commenced in 1924 with an initial well production of 40 to 50 B/D of 12o API gravity oil. Complete primary development of the pool has been spread over several years. Approxi- mately 40 wells were drilled during the first phase of development, which was completed in 1945. The subsequent primary development started in 1960 with initial well productions of 30 to 40 B/D oil. Thirty-seven wells were completed in the Tar pool during this phase. For the most part, slotted, gravel flow packed liners have been used in the wells in this pool. A cyclic steam stimulation pilot was initiated in March, 1964. Based on the very successful stimulation in the pilot area, the cyclic stimulation project was expanded to include all of the Tar pool wells producing at the end of 1965 (Fig. 5). Also, a development drilling program was begun at this time. To date, 86 new wells have been drilled under this program. The number of wells drilled each year in this secondary phase of development is also shown in Fig. 5. New Well Completion Practices Most of the new wells have been completed to produce from both the Upper and Lower Tar zones. Generally, a casing stub is cemented from the top of Lower Tar to the base of clean Upper Tar sands to exclude intermediate water-bearing sands. The water string is then cemented from the top of Upper Tar to about 1,500 ft with neat cement and 30 percent silica flour. The annulus from 1,500 ft to surface is then filled with a petroleum-based gel through a high-temperature port collar. Once again, a history of sand-free production dictated the use of 60-mesh gravel flow packed liners. The Upper and Lower Tar

The work herein reported shows that galena in certain organic solutions of fatty acids becomes coated with lead soaps, and that this coating is not only highly water-repellent but is also repellent to certain organic liquids, particularly those of high surface tension; i.e., nitrobenzene, diphenylmethane. Wetting Properties of Galena in Nonaqueous Fatty Acid Solutions When a "captive bubble"I is withdrawn from a polished, plane galena surface under a nitrobenzene solution of stearic acid, the air bubble shows a decided tendency to "cling" to the mineral surface. The contact angle, therefore, was greater than zero, although it was not large enough to be measured quantitatively by the captive-bubble method." When pure nitrobenzene was substituted for the nitrobenzene-stearic acid solution, no clinging of the bubble was observed; viz., contact angle = zero. Although the contact angle developed in air-galena-nitrobenzene-fatty acid solution was small, the organic solvent repellency of the galena surface was great enough to enable good recovery in a laboratory flotation cell2 In Table I are given the results of flotation experiments using several different fatty acids dissolved in nitrobenzene.
