METAL mines were developed long before coal mines and the early lighting of underground workings was effected by torches and candles. The early coal mines were outcrop workings and little trouble was experienced from gas, but as the mines became deeper and shaft mines were opened it became apparent that an open-flame lamp was exceed-ingly dangerous where gas occurred. No satisfactory way of lighting gaseous coal mines was found until Sir Humphrey Davy brought out his famous safety lamp in 1815. The introduction of the Davy lamp was a great step forward but it was unsatisfactory from a light standpoint because the gauze absorbed a large percentage of the light given out by the flame. Clanny corrected this by the introduction of a cylindrical glass lens, which not only per-mitted a free distribution of the light from the flame but added greatly to the safety by eliminating the possibility of the flame coming in contact with the gauze and by protecting the flame against air currents. A very complete story of the flame safety lamp since its inception is given in the U. S. Bureau of Mines Bulletin No. 227, by J. W. Paul, L. C. Ilsley and E. J. Gleim, published in 1924. A little more recent publication, known as Safety in Mines Research Board Paper No. 4, entitled "The Light Power of Flame Safety Lamps," by R. V. Wheeler and D. W. Woodhead, was published in England in 1927. The flame safety lamp was the-only lamp available for gaseous mines for about 100 years. Although the incandescent electric lamp has been in use over 50 years, it was not found safe to use this lamp from wired circuits in gaseous locations. The storage battery was advocated shortly after the develop-ment of the incandescent lamp but until the introduction of the tungsten filament in the miniature mine-lamp bulb, the battery lamp was not a real possibility because of the excessive weight of the battery necessary to produce a sufficient amount of light. Methods for analyzing flooding or cycling projects by means of two-dimensional flow calculations are presented in the literature. The use of these methods allows the determination of optimum operating conditions for such projects and provides information on pattern efficiencies, relative flow rates, pressure distributions and floodout histories. The accuracy of such analyses depends on the basic reservoir data employed, especially the absolute permeability distribution in the reservoir; however, absolute permeability data normally are determined from well flow tests and/or core measurements and are so limited in quantity and quality that they do not adequately describe the reservoir flow properties. A calculation procedure is presented for determining the areal permeability distribution in the reservoir. Use of the procedure allows verification of the basic reservoir data through the matching of past reservoir conditions, thereby providing proper data for reliable predictions of future operations. The calculation procedure is a numerical technique based on a mathematical model of the reservoir and is designed for solution by means of an electronic digital computer. Results from field application of this procedure are presented. Permeability distributions from measured data are compared to those calculated to indicate the need for the analysis. Comparisons of field-measured and calculated pressure distributions are given to establish the validity of the calculation procedure. The conclusions of this paper are (I) use of the calculation provides data that allow a match of past reservoir conditions and thus reliable prediction of future operations; and (2) the procedure should, where applicable, be used to provide adequate reservoir data for use in two-dimensional flow calculations and related reservoir analyses. INTRODUCTION One means of providing more precise engineering control over reservoir operations during all stages of depletion is to develop some type of model to simulate the reservoir, using information developed from the behavior of the prototype to predict the performance of the actual reservoir. The use of mathematical rather than physical models for this purpose has been gaining in importance recently because of the application and availability of electronic computers. Mathematical models avoid instrumentation difficulties and allow easier handling of large-scale problems. At present, analyses employing two-dimensional models are common, and thought is being given to the use of models in three dimensions. The use of multi-dimensional models is necessary to show not only what is occurring in the reservoir, but also where in the reservoir the phenomena of interest are taking place. Methods for analyzing flooding or cycling projects by means of two-dimensional numerical models are presented in the literature. The use of these methods allows the determination of optimum operating conditions for such projects and provides information on pattern efficiencies, relative flow rates, pressure distributions and floodout histories. The applicability of numerical models and the results of using such analyses have been presented through field examples. The references indicated here discuss fully the data necessary to build the mathematical reservoir model and the way the model is used to study or predict the future performance of the reservoir. The accuracy of the analysis of such projects depends on the basic reservoir data employed in the construction of. the model. In order to be sure the model represents the reservoir, it must be used to match some known set of reservoir conditions, i.e., to match past reservoir performance. The accuracy of the model is directly dependent upon the absolute permeability distribution in the reservoir; however, absolute permeability data are normally determined from well flow tests and/or core measurements, and are so limited in quantity and quality that they do not adequately describe the reservoir flow properties. There is always the need for better data and for verification of existing data. The purpose of this paper is to show the use of the mathematical model to match past performance in flooding or cycling projects, the use of numerical techniques to adjust the basic absolute permeability data if necessary so that a match is obtained, and in this way to generate the effective areal permeability distribution of the reservoir. A review of the basic concepts of the numerical model will be given, followed by a discussion of the data-adjusting technique for matching past performance. TWO field examples will be cited to show

THE object of this experiment was to obtain a usable set of field curves for determining the susceptibility of rocks with the vertical magnetometer. The need often arises for determining the susceptibility of rocks in the field in order to interpret magnetic anomalies obtained. This is particularly true when diamond drilling has been done and the relation to the surface rocks of the samples taken is desired. Many methods of measuring rock susceptibility have been developed, but in general they require careful shaping of the sample or pulverizing it in addition to delicate laboratory measuring instruments designed for the purpose. The requirements for a practical method for the determination of susceptibilities are as follows: I. There should be as little alteration as possible of the specimen. 2. A minimum of time should be required in the preparation of the specimen and the calibration of the equipment. 3. The equipment used should be portable. 4. An accuracy within the limits of the survey at hand should be obtainable. 5. A means of measuring the remnant magnetism should be available. LABORATORY PROCEDURE With these ideas in mind, the problem was approached in the manner in which Koenigsberger1 developed his method using the principle of the electrical theory of images of Lord Kelvin and applying it to the magnetic case. This solution of the problem states that the apparent change [ ] in the magnetic field intensity due to the proximity of a specimen is given by: [ ] Where k is the susceptibility of the specimen, m the strength of the pole of the needle, and a its distance from the surface of the specimen, as shown in Fig. I.2 This relation is true only for an infinite body and corrections are necessary for a finite body. Koenigsberger used in his work a variometer of special design. He suggested that a Schmidt vertical balance or horizontal magnetometer, as well as some other instrument, might be used. Atlantic Richfield Co. began operating a commercial uranium solution mining project in April 1975, in Live Oak County, Tex., 10 miles southwest of the town of George West. The operation is designed to produce 250,00 lb of U308 per year and is jointly owned by Atlantic Richfield Co., Dalco, and U.S. Steel. The proprietary process employed in this operation consists of injecting an alkaline leaching solution into the ore-bearing formation through a pattern of injection wells. The uranium-bearing solution is then removed through producing wells using submersible pumps in central production wells. The produced solution is pumped through a pipeline to the plant area where the uranium is extracted. The barren solution is refurbished and returned to the pattern area for reinjection. The injection field and plant site are located in the drainage of Spring Creek, a small intermittent stream tributary to the Nueces River. Land use in the area is primarily agricultural cattle ranching and farming---but several producing gas fields are present in the areas as well. A nine month enviromental baseline study was conducted on the property beginning in Feb. 1975. Plants and animals of the Clay West area were identified and representative terrestrial and aquatic communities were analyzed. Physical and chemical parameters of the soils were described and analyzed. The surface and underground waters were analyzed chemically; radionuclides, heavy metals, nutrients, and pesticide concentrations were measured in the creek sediments; bacteriological measurements were made in creek water and sediments; radionuclide and chemical levels in plants and animals, both terrestial and aquatic, were measured. These studies, though not required by existing, state or federal laws, were considered necessary to assess the existing conditions before operations began on site. The in-place leaching technique for uranium mining eliminates the enviromental disturbances associated with open pit or underground mining. No grinding and crushing of ore is needed, nor are large tonnages of waste tailings produced. Surface subsidence is not expected since less than 5 lb of uranium is present per ton of rock and even complete removal of such small amounts should not cause subsidence. Solution mining has fewer environmental problems than conventional mining. Members of the Texas Water Quality Board recognized the differences which exist and have recently formulated new environmental control procedures which apply specifically to solution mining. Some of the solution mining activities which are of particular concern are discussed in the following pages. Process Description The produced uranium-bearing solution is pumped through a pipeline from the pattern area to the plant area. The first pattern area consists of a nest of 125 fluid injection, production, and monitor wells [(Fig. 1)]. Injection wells have 4-in. casings and are spaced 50 ft apart on a square grid. Production wells have a 6-in. casing and are located in the center of each square. A block flow sheet of the plant is given in [Fig. 2]. The produced solution goes through parallel trains, each consisting of a carbon column and an ion exchange column in series. The carbon column removes any sand present in the produced solution and the ion exchange column extracts the uranium. The depleted solution is treated with chemicals and returned to the field for reinjection. The uranium retained in the ion exchange column is removed periodically with a sodium chloride solution. Uranium-bearing solution from the ion exchange column is passed through a charcoal column for removal of impurities and then to a precipitation tank where the uranium is precipitated as yellowcake slurry. The yellowcake slurry is clarified, filtered and dried to produce a granular yellowcake product. Environmental Considerations Sources of waste solutions to storage reservoirs, the backwash reservoir and atmospheric discharges are shown in the block flow sheet [(Fig. 2)]. These waste solutions pose a relatively small problem and are adequately controlled by conventional means. There is one area, however,

Nearly three years of experience in Spanish Honduras has placed the writer in possession of many facts concerning its resources which may be of interest to the Institute. According to the most trustworthy surveys, Honduras is bounded on the north and east by the Caribbean Sea; southeasterly by the river Segovia (or Wanks), which flows into the Caribbean at a point called Cabo Gracias a Dios (Cape Thanks be to God), long famous as the favorite hiding-place of the celebrated pirate, Morgan ; southwardly by a corner of San Salvador, the Bay of Fonseca, and the Republic of Nicaragua; Guatemala and San Salvador form tile western boundary. It is one of the five republics composing Central America, has a population of about 310,000 and an area of 150,000 square miles, lying between the 13th and 16th degrees of N. latitude, extending from north to south 200 miles, between the Atlantic and Pacific, and 400 miles from east to west, between Guatemala and Cape Gracias a Dios. It is composed of 13 States or Departments, under one common law. The principal resources are valuable woods, hides, rubber, tobacco, coffee, fruit, cattle, silver and gold. It is of the mineral resources of the country that I will speak, calling attention to the most noted mines, and their relative position to Tegucigalpa, the capital. The introduction of foreign capital into the country dates back about eleven years, and to-day there are at least twenty-five well organized companies.

The mechanism and rate of reduction of FeO at conditions similar to those in the stack of a blast furnace have been determined for temperatures from 980" to 1165°C. Preliminary studies of the reduction of Fe2O3 with activated coconut charcoal in a static system (no flow of reducing gas) have shown that the CO2-CO ratio of the product gas depends upon the relative reactivities of the Fe2O3 and charcoal. In a systern with a "hot blast" of CO and Nz (simitar to dry bosh gas), synthetic FeO, and actiuated coconut charcoal, the rate of reduction was not sensitive to the flow of reducing gas, and the rate-controlling step alas the chemical reaction at the metal-oxide interface. Wherz solid carbon was not present, a critical flow rate of reducing- gas had to be met in order to prevent a lowering of the reduction rate. The effect of a less-reactive carbon (blast-jurnace coke) and of a "natural" FeO on the mechanistn and rate, and the mininum amount of carbon necessary in the charge to tnaintain the reducing potential of the gas phase, have been determined. THE importance of iron oxide reduction processes has encouraged many studies of the process reaction kinetics. Despite this, the mechanism is not well-understood and three main theories have evolved, which can be stated as follows: A) the rate-controlling step is diffusion, either gaseous diffusion of the reductant or product gas through a porous solid,' or solid-state diffusion of iron and oxygen atoms through the so1id.2 B) The slow step is diffusion of reducing gas through a stagnant boundary layer. C) The reaction rate is controlled by the chemical reaction occurring at the metal-oxide interface and is proportional to the area of this interface.3 By increasing the velocity of the reducing gas to a flow rate beyond which no increase in the reduction rate is observed, critical flow rate, it may be possible to eliminate B as the slow step. However, as warnere points out, the establishment of a critical flow rate may only assure that the reaction is not limited by a reduction in the reducing potential of the gas and that B may still be the rate-determining step. Edstrom and Bitsianes and Seth and Ross8 show that A and C may both be correct for the reduction of the same oxide, depending upon the stage of the reduction, and that the relative importance of the two mechanisms varies with the porosity of the oxide. Themelis9 has derived expressions which express A, B, and C in terms of the fraction reduction, Rx, of a spherical particle. Thus, in the case of A a plot of In (1 - Rx) vs time must be linear and the time to reach a given reduction is proportional to the square of the particle diameter. For B a plot of (1 - Rx) vs must be linear and the time to reach a given reduction is proportional to the square of the diameter. For C a plot of 1 - (1 - RX)1/3 vs f must be linear and the time to reach a given degree of reduction should be proportional to the diameter. In the case of mixad controlled reactions, none of the plots are linear over their entire length. The results of previous studies, in which the rates of gaseous reduction of iron oxide were measured in the absence of carbon, may not correspond to blastfurnace practice because they ignore the effects of the Boudouard reaction. CO2 +C — 2CO The presence of carbon may alter the mechanism or the rate of iron oxide reduction through an enrichment of the gas phase by Eq. [1]. In this case, the presence of and reactivity of carbon become important. If the Boudouard reaction has no effect on the rate of reduction, the reducing gas could be supplied by some means other than the gasification of carbon at the tuyeres and carbon could, theoretically, be eliminated from the burden. Preliminary studies of the reduction of Fe2O3 with activated coconut charcoal were made to determine if the reactivity (surface area) of the Fe2O3 had any effect on the product gas composition. Two size fractions of Fe2O3 were reduced with charcoal in a static system (no flow of reducing gas). In each case the charcoal was -100 + 325 mesh and was 25 pct of the total charge. One fraction of the reagent-grade Fe2O3 was submicron in diameter. The other fraction was -100 + 200 mesh and was prepared from the former by compacting, sintering at 1300°C, crushing, and screening. In each experiment, the reaction vessel was filled with a mixture of CO and CO, which would be in equilibrium with FeO and iron at the reaction temperature. A furnace was heated to the desired temperature, the vessel was placed in the furnace, and the gaseous products of the reaction were collected and analyzed. The results of these experiments, Fig. 1, show that the gas phase associated with the submicron oxide is more oxidizing than that with the -100 + 200 mesh oxide. Therefore, in a static system, the relative rates of the reduction reaction and the gasification of carbon depend upon the reactivities of the Fe2O3 and charcoal. The reduction of FeO to iron is the most important reaction occurring in the blast furnace and is probably the slowest of the several reduction steps. THE upper Mississippi Valley zinc-lead area was the first major lead producing section in the United States. The lead ore, found near the surface in crevices, was relatively pure galena that could be smelted directly into lead, at first in log hearth furnaces and later in more efficient blast type furnaces. French Canadian fur traders encouraged the Indians to mine the lead ore and showed them how to smelt it into lead that had a high value for bullets.1 Nicholas Perrot found lead ore on the Mississippi River bluffs near the junction of Wisconsin and Illinois and in 1690 established a trading post on the Wisconsin side of the river opposite the present site of Dubuque, Iowa.2 Shortly after 1720 discovery of Mine La Mott in Missouri diverted considerable attention from the Upper Mississippi area. Mining continued on a desultory basis with operations concentrated in the Galena, Illinois-Dubuque, area. In 1740 at least 20 miners were at work in the Fever River area around Galena and are reported to have shipped 2500 70-lb pigs of lead to Kaskaskia in 1741.3 Julien Dubuque established a mining and smelting operation in 1790 near the city that bears his name 'and was granted sole right to exploit the mining operations on the lands of the Sauk and the Fox Indians. He is reported to have produced 30,000 70-lb pigs of lead in 1805. Following the death of Dubuque in 1810 the Indians refused to let the white miners enter their lands, and little was done on the Iowa side of the river until the Indians were removed by treaty with the United States government in 1832.4 Early mining was entirely for lead but as the crevices were followed down, increasing percentages of zinc sulphide and zinc carbonate were encountered and at first discarded. Later a market became available for the zinc ores, and hand jigging devices were made to separate the lead," the zinc, and the rock or waste materials. The first record of zinc production from -the area is for 1860. Production of zinc passed that of lead before 1900, reached a peak of 64,000 short tons' in 1917, fell off rapidly and continually to about 2000 short tons in 1938, and since 1940 has ranged from 11,000 to 19,000 short tons. Lead has been of considerably less importance since 1900, and at present only about 10 pct as much lead as zinc is produced. Practically all of the zinc ore has come from orebodies that are rather flat and wide with, considerable length as compared to width. Most of the early lead came from the crevice type deposit, but present production is from the predominately flat zinc orebodies. The Graham-Snyder orebody, scene of Eagle Picher operations, is practically all zinc with little or no lead being recovered. Marcasite, present in varying amounts, makes production of finished concentrates by gravity separation impractical. Satisfactory lead and zinc concentrates have been produced since flotation was introduced in the area in 1927. An acid recovery plant was operated for about 20 years after World War I, but it has been dismantled, and no recovery of the iron sulphides in the ores of the district is being made at the present time. In June 1950 there were three companies operating mines and mills, Tri-State Zinc Co., Calumet & Hecla Consolidated Copper Co., and Eagle Picher Mining and Smelting Co. The Vinegar Hill Zinc Co. had completed a shaft at a new orebody and had started to develop the mine which will supply the Cuba City mill. The Cuba Mining Co. was holding the Andrews Mine inactive. The Dodgeville Mining Co. was not operating but was exploring for additional reserves. Several small mines were selling ore to the Eagle Picher mill. A general area map is given in Fig. 1. THE first method of working coal mines in the middle western states, more particularly in Illinois, Indiana and Missouri, was by means of the so-called single-entry method. In this method a single main passageway, or entry, was driven in the coal seam. with no parallel passageways, and from this pas-sageway or entry there were turned at intervals sim-ilar cross-passageways or entries, and from these cross-passageways, if the coal seam worked lay fairly horizontal, rooms were turned right and left. These crude methods of working were followed when the com-panies opening the mines were small and of very limited capital, and when the demand for coal was small and irregular. The principal desire was to produce coal in the short-est possible time and at the cheapest price. The chief evil resulting from such method of working was de-fective ventilation, although there were other serious drawbacks. There were then few or no good mining laws and no restrictions on those operating the coal mines. The hours of labor were long, the wages low, and the miners accordingly worked hard. All the coal was either sheared or undercut with a pick by hand. Very little solid shooting and no machine mining was done. What little air entered the mine, openings was introduced through the entries or. headings and thence conducted through the rooms by means of curtains; in many cases, as the workings became more exten-sive, the number of curtains added so materially to the mine resistance that ventilation was extremely in-efficient. Shots were fired by the miners at any time during the working shift and consequently there was more or less powder smoke or fumes in the mine work-ings all day long. Moreover, the working days were much longer than at present. The fine, dry coal-dust falling from the miners' picks while they were shear-ing or undercutting the coal filled the mine atmosphere and was taken into the lungs of the mine employees.

THE importance of aluminum-silicon alloys in the light alloy field is now generally recognized. Where silicon was once considered detrimental to the properties of aluminum, useful alloys now contain as much as 13 per cent. Furthermore, silicon is present as an impurity in aluminum of even the purest grades. Iron is another important impurity in aluminum and like silicon is found in small quantities in the purest aluminum available today. The manner of occurrence of iron and silicon in commercially pure aluminum and many of its alloys exerts, a very pronounced influence upon their properties. The effect of large quantities of iron in aluminum-silicon alloys is so detrimental that it has been found necessary to limit the allowable maximum percentage to as low a figure as is consistent with quantity production and satisfactory physical properties. The intimate relation existing between iron and silicon in aluminum and aluminum alloys makes necessary a more complete knowledge of this ternary system. This paper is divided into two principal parts, dealing respectively with aluminum-silicon solubility equilibria and the constitution of aluminum-iron-silicon alloys.

It is the purpose of this article to present the results of an investigation of certain clay and shale suspensions having viscosities that are materially influenced by fluid motion, and to discuss the bearing of these results upon the choice of policy in the control of drilling fluids. A previous article described the design and the characteristics of an instrument adapted to measure the viscosity of plastic suspensions during continuous uniform motion and at a variety of speeds.' It has long been recognized that the viscosity of a clay suspension depends on the past history of the fluid motion. Since an abundance of literature is available on this phenomenon,2 it is not necessary to describe it in more than general terms. It is usually observed that rapid motion reduces the viscosity of a clay suspension, and that some time is required for the viscosity to fall to its equilibrium value after the steady motion is started. On reducing the speed of motion to some lower value, the viscosity again rises, but it also requires some time to attain a steady viscosity value at the slower rate of motion. Thus clay suspensions are usually observed to be increasing in viscosity as time passes when the measurement has been immediately preceded by fluid motion that was more rapid than that employed in the measurement. And it is usually observed that the viscosity falls as time passes when the measurement has been preceded by more quiescent conditions. Reed,3 and Broughton and Hand4 have reported a condition of observation of clay suspensions in which the viscosity was observed to fall during the first few moments of steady motion, and rise thereafter. The characteristics of the new instrument are particularly well adapted to studies of this kind. With it we have been able to observe all of the phenomena described above, and it is important to understand their nature because they all occur at some time during normal drill-

Thus clay suspensions are usually observed to be increasing in viscosity as time passes when the measurement has been immediately preceded by fluid motion that was more rapid than that employed in the measurement. And it is usually observed that the viscosity falls as time passes when the measurement has been preceded by more quiescent conditions. Reed,3 and Broughton and Hand4 have reported a condition of observa-tion of clay suspensions in which the viscosity was observed to fall during the first few moments of steady motion, and rise thereafter. The characteristics of the new instrument are particularly well adapted to studies of this kind. With it we have been able to observe all of the phenomena described above, and it is important to understand their nature because they all occur at some time during normal drill-

Many hydrated silicates have been synthesized and sold for commercial use. However, this paper discusses only hydrated calcium silicates and, to a lesser extent, hydrated magnesium silicates. Synthetic calcium silicates were first formed by man when he found that mixtures of silica or silicates and lime in water set up to form cements. The material which was responsible for the cementing properties was calcium silicate hydrate, although this fact was not recognized until early in this century. In the early 19001s, synthetic calcium silicates, reinforced with fibers and formed simply by reacting calcium hydroxide and silica in water with fiber at atmospheric or under low pressure autoclave conditions, found increased use in thermal insulations and in building products. These insulations were found to have a low thermal conductivity and would withstand temperatures up to 650°C. This, combined with their very low densities (from 8 to 50 Ib per cu ft) and fairly high strength, also made them suitable for use as building products. Following the disastrous Morro Castle fire of the 1930Js, calcium silicate board products were used as partitioning material in all shipboard construction in the U.S. As autoclaving techniques were improved and developed, it was: learned that under hydrothermal conditions new and useful calcium silicates which could be used under more extreme temperatures (up to 980' C) could be prepared. These had high surface areas and other unique properties which suited them for use as fillers, pesticide carriers, low temperature insulating materials, and adsorbents for the removal of fatty acids from various solutions. Hydrated magnesium silicates have not been studied as extensively as the calcium compounds. Their first important use was in the filtration of dry cleaning solutions for the removal of fatty acids. With the introduction of detergents, it was found that these products lost their advantage because of their high affinity for the detergent chemicals. However, in recent years these chemicals are finding increasing use as decolorizing agents for fats and anti-caking agents for resins. Some materials with very high surface are finding new use as adsorbents. CALCIUM SILICATE HYDRATE COMPOUNDS AND THElR CONDITIONS OF FORMATION Within the past ten years much has been done in the field of calcium silicate hydrate chemistry. As a result of this work it has been found that at least 25 different forms of calcium silicate hydrate can either be formed synthetically or found as naturally occurring materials. IN two previous papersl,2 dealing with the carbon-oxygen reaction, and the simultaneous content of each, in liquid steel in the furnace, we have made use of the quantity 0[O], defined as the excess oxygen beyond what would be in equilibrium with carbon then present if the pressure of carbon monoxide were I atm,; that is, if [C] X [O] is taken as 0.00222, 0[O] = [O] - 0,00222/[C] where [O] is the percentage of oxygen by weight as measured by the method described earlier.' This quantity 0[O] proves to be substantially independent of carbon content over the range 0.08 to 1.2 per cent, as well as of the basicity of the slag, and is nearly always within the limits 0.015 to 0.025 per cent when the bath is boiling normally and is in what we have termed a steady state. Apparently it must be at least about 0.014 per cent before boiling occurs; but this threshold value seems to depend upon the ease of bubble formation at the metal-hearth interface, hence upon the condition of the surface of the hearth. In any case, 0[O], on the average, changes considerably following any disturbance of the bath, as by addition of ore. The present paper deals with the average changes in ?[O] level following addition of Spiegel or crop ends, or after procedures to promote stirring, or by tapping of the steel from the furnace. The observations were made on a large number of commercial heats, and consequently are subject to the influence of various disturbing factors; the results have the compensating merit of showing the consistency obtainable under the limitations imposed by practical operation. VARIABILITY OF EXCESS OXYGEN IN NORMAL OPEN-HEARTH OPERATION The preceding general statements refer to the average value of ?[O] particularly in heats that are boiling actively; on individual heats, which are less active, there may be a variable time lag between the disturbance and its effect, which complicates the interpretation of what is going on. For instance, if in the normal refining process boiling is sluggish, the slag usually is gaining oxygen from the gas phase above it, or from added ore, faster than it is losing oxygen to the metal; yet when the bath starts to boil vigorously, the opposite condition may prevail for some time. The consequence of this lag is a variation of ?[O], the interpretation of which in a single heat may not be immediately obvious, This condition is illustrated in Figs. I and 2. In Fig, I, ?[O] at the beginning of the test period was near the lower limit of its usual range (dashed lines) in the steady state as a consequence of the lime boil, which had ended about as indicated. IT has been considered that the training of an engineer is too often vocational training; that it is a pity all engineers cannot have had a period of liberal training before taking up' pure engineering. Offhand, the so-called liberal courses should bring more ready adaptability to deal with the unexpected, to face with assurance situations which have had no parallel in one's experience, and to move without hesitation under conditions which were heretofore unknown to one, than the specialized course in mining engineering. We hear increasing talk as to the necessity of making the engineer articulate and bringing him into public life. The social implications, and responsibilities of engineering are pointed out, as of equal importance with the prodigious marvels of engineering ingenuity. You often read of this as the logical result of the in¬creasing consciousness of the engineer as to his rela¬tive position in our modern industrial civilization. , Some wag has noted that man is the noblest work of God, but that man is the only one who has said so. Perhaps engineers are the only claimants as to the necessity of their going in for public life and service; at any rate, some liberal educators' still maintain that a well-rounded general education is the better training.

BINARY- alloy phases having the A15-type crystal structure have been described as occurring at a simple and more or less invariant stoichiometric composition (A3B) which corresponds to the relative number of atoms occupying each of the two crystallographi lattice sites in this structure.1,2 It is frequently assumed, therefore, that each crystallographic site is occupied exclusively by one kind of atom. In most cases, however, there have been insufficient experimental data to establish whether atomic ordering is, in fact, complete. Recent studies have shown that binary A15-type phases are sometimes stable over an appreciable composition range3''* and, occasionally, the composition range of stability does not even include the "ideal" A3B stoichiometric composition.5-7 We have observed the existence of nonstoichiometric A15-type phases in the binary systems Cr-Pt and Cr-Os. This has not been reported in previous work on these alloy systems.1,8-11 A series of alloys, each weighing approximately 30 g, was prepared by are-melting in an Ar-He atmosphere using 99.999 pct Cr, 99.999 pct Os, and 99.99 pct Pt as starting materials. Each alloy was melted four times with a total weight loss of less than 1 pct. The stoichiometric (A3B) alloys were sealed in evacuated quartz tubes and annealed at 1200°C for periods of time ranging from 3 days to 2 months. Examination of the alloy microstructures revealed that little change had occurred over this time interval and it was therefore assumed that the microstructures were fairly representative of equilibrium conditions. No evidence of contamination was observed although there was apparently some loss of chromium which was confined to a thin layer at the surface of the specimens. The quartz tubes were quenched from the annealing temperature into cold water. X-ray diffraction and metallographic examination of the stoichiometric alloys revealed an estimated 10 to 30 pct of second phases which were tentatively identified as phases previously reported in these binary-alloy systems.8-11 A second series of alloys was prepared by mixing -325 mesh metal powders having a nominal purity of 99.9 pct and compressing these mixed powders in a cylindrical die at a pressure of 43,000 psi. These alloys, each weighing 15 g, and some of the arc-melted alloys were annealed in a high-temperature vacuum furnace heated by tantalum strips at a pressure of 10-8 Torr and were rapidly cooled by turning off the furnace power. X-ray and metallographic examination of both series of alloys served to establish the composition ranges of the A15-type phases. Although some chromium losses occurred during the vacuum annealing, they were largely confined to a thin layer on the outer surfaces of the samples. It was established that the A15 phases occur in the Cr-Pt system at 21 ± 1 at. pct Pt after 1 week at 1200°C and in the Cr-Os system at 28 ± 1 at. pctOs after 1 day at 1400°C (see Table I). We also observed that an arc-melted stoichiometric (A3B) alloy in the Cr-Ir system was single-phase (A15-type) in the "as-cast" condition in agreement with previous work.8,13 In addition we obtained a sample of the Cr-Os A15-type phase from Argonne National Laboratory. This alloy contained less than 1 pct second phase12 and was submitted to a density measurement. The density measurement yielded a value of 11.14 g per cu cm in comparison to a theoretical value of 11.25 g per cu cm calculated using the observed lattice constant (4.6806Å) of this alloy. The uncertainty in measurement was 0.1 pct but the sample may have contained some cracks or minor imperfections which could account for the low experimental value. We have also studied the atomic ordering in these phases by means of integrated line intensity measurements using thick, flat, rotating powder samples and CuK a radiation in an X-ray diffractometer. We have obtained order parameters of 0.90 for the Cr-Pt phase, 0.89 for the Cr-Ir phase, and 0.64 for the Cr-Os phase using the formula: where s is the usual Bragg and Williams order parameter, ra is the fraction of chromium atoms in A sites, and FA is the fraction of chromium atoms in the alloy. The values obtained are estimated to be accurate within ±4 pct. If the unusually small value for the order parameter of the Cr-Os A15 phase were due to the existence of lattice vacancies on the "B-atom" sites, then a density of 10.04 g per cu cm would be expected in contrast to the observed value of 11.14 g per cu cm. Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD), founded in 1942, is located near the town of Itabira, Brazil. Its iron ore deposits include over 500 million metric tons (mt) of high-grade hematite and about 2 billion mt of itabirite (banded rock formed by thin alternate layers of hematite and silica). These deposits are part of the Iron Ore Quadrangle, of which the overall reserves have been estimated at more than 30 billion mt. The magnitude of the project meant difficult early years for the company, including large investments, extensive railroad rehabilitation, and construction of ore port and ore handling facilities. Companhia Vale do Rio Doce was organized as a stock company, and 91% of its shares are presently owned by the Brazilian government. Financing has been accomplished in part through loans from international monetary agencies foreign banks, and foreign industry, as well as Brazilian banks. The company markets mainly abroad. In 1967, it exported 10.6 long tons (It) of ore, principally to West Germany, Japan, Netherlands, Italy, France, United Kingdom, and the United States. The Rio Doce geographic region where CVRD operates is strategically located among the large population centers of Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Salvador, and Vitoria (Fig. 1). It covers an area of approximately 81,000 sq km in the states of Minas Gerais and Espirito Santo, and its population in 1968 was about 3.5 million. This region presents excellent prospects for development, with factors favorable for forestry, agriculture, grazing, and exploration for minerals other than iron ore, Electric power (hydroelectric plants) is available, as well as two main systems of transportation: the Rio-Bahia highway and the Vitoria-Minas Railroad. C. W. MERRILL*—Mr. Hughes' paper not only is very well presented but is most timely in that it covers a subject of vital interest to the United States. Tin is one of the strategic metals which has not been found here in appreciable quantities. The total United States tin output since the first recorded production over 100 years ago would not supply current consumption for a fortnight. On the consumption side, tin is extremely important in national defense because of its use in tin plate which, in the form of tin cans, makes it possible to feed properly the armies that the United States recruits from its civilian population in emergencies. Moreover, the internal combustion engines so important in powering tanks, planes, and other war machines, require large quantities of tin alloys for bearings and for soldering. These considerations, along with the fact that Malaya, historically, has been the leading source of tin to the United States, make the kind of information that Mr. Hughes has presented so ably. a matter of vital interest. Your Chairman, Mr. Romanowitz, in his introduction, referred to the fact that I had been a member of the United States delegations to the three meetings of the International Tin Study Group. Some cominents on the Group's objectives and deliberations may be of interest. When it appeared that the International Tin Committee, the prewar producer's cartel, might soon revive its operations and extend its control agreement beyond the expiration date of Dec. 31, 1946, the United States Government became interested in some kind of an international trade organization concerned with tin which would give the consumers' interest equal representation with the producers' interests. An international meeting was called in London in October 1946 to consider this problem. I did not attend that meeting hut the result of the meeting was the organization of the International 'Tin Study Group which
