This mine is situated upon the western slope of the Meadow Valley mountains, about 70 miles by road from the present end of the railroad-track, which is at Uvada, on the UtahNevada boundary. This boundary-line marks fairly well a certain change in type of scenery from western Utah to eastern Nevada,—from a region in which the desert valleys predominate over the mountain ranges to one in which they are in about equal proportion. The railroad from Salt Lake City runs somewhat W. of S., for the most part along the bottom of the ancient Lake Bonneville. The latter part of its present course follows the axis of the southern arm or bay of that lake, now known as the Escalante desert. Along this bay, its line is a mathematically straight one, with no perceptible change of level for two " tangents " of more than 30 miles each, varying but a few degrees in direction. The often-heard question "How can we interest young geologists and engineers in AIME?" is virtually the same as "How can we interest young geologists and engineers in the glamorous mining industry?" Many persons would reply that AIME and industry should improve their image by various devices aimed at high school students and teachers, boy scouts, and even grade school children. For more immediate results, I suggest that we concentrate our efforts at the professional level on students already identified as geol¬ogists and engineers. Why does our glamorous profession appear distinctly unglamorous to most of the engineers and geologists currently in college and graduate school? The answers seem quite simple to me. First, the profession talks almost exclusively to itself, seldom to the engineering or geologic public, and almost never to the lay public. Second, the industry has been overly conservative in all aspects of recruiting during an especially competitive and affluent period. Consequently, mining has taken a terrific public drubbing from preservationists who still portray its leaders as robber barons. SME and AIME have, of course, various commendable programs for enticing student interest, including student membership, the low dues for this membership, the somewhat reduced prices at which students can attend AIME meetings and buy AIME volumes, and the large number of AIME Student chapters on campuses. Obviously, more active encouragements are needed.

IN the course of small seale experiments on the electrodeposition, of copper, extremely brittle deposits were obtained from electrolytes prepared by leaching calcined chalcopyrite with aqueous sulfuric acid. It was not possible to strip the metal without fracture after it had been deposited from such electrolytes onto smooth oiled copper sheets, the usual plant procedure for the production of so-called starting sheets. The embrittlement did not occur with electrolytes made either by leaching the calcine with water or by treating an acid leachate to remove iron as hydrous ferric oxide. The electrolytes which produced brittle deposits were found to contain molybdenum in concentrations of 10 to 25 mg per 1, whereas those which produced ductile deposits contained <0.5 mg per 1. Synthetic electrolytes having the composition: Cu", 40 gpl; Fe", 0.5 to 1.0 gpl; Fe3+, 0.5 to 1.0 gpl; and H,SO,, 10 to 50 gpl, were prepared from reagent-grade salts; by adding ammonium molybdate, the embrittling effect of the higher concentrations of molybdenum (VI) was strikingly confirmed. The brittle deposits contained up to 0.03 pct Mo. The importance of oxidation state of the molybdenum was demonstrated when the electrolyte containing it was circulated continuously through a bed of fine copper metal during deposi- tion. Under these reducing conditions, the cathode deposit was ductile and molybdenum could not be detected. Molybdenum has not been recognized as one of the metals causing embrittlement of copper nor is it listed among the usual impurities. In most elec-trowinning plants there is a purification step which removes iron from the leachate before electrolysis. In these cases molybdenum would be coprecipitated with hydrous ferric oxide. In the case of the large leaching plant at Chuquicamata, Chile, where the leachate is reported to contain considerable molybdenum, it would be reduced to a lower oxidation state during removal of chlorine by means of cement copper. This may explain why the embrittling effect of molybdenum has not been reported previously. Moreover, in copper refining plants where soluble anodes have been prepared by a high temperature smelting process, it is most unlikely that any molybdenum would remain with the copper, whereas the calcines in this work were prepared in a fluidized bed reactor at a temperature not exceeding 720°C. Nearly all copper-base alloys are improved by rolling processes, but the copper-aluminum alloys seem to possess equally good properties when cast or rolled; this is a remarkable metallurgical fact. Another important property of these copper-aluminum alloys is their resistance to alternating stress. Many tests indicate that their resistance is greater in this respect than that of some steels, and I have seen instances when cast aluminum-bronze bolts have outlived five steel bolts in foundation work subject to severe shocks. I mention these various instances to indicate that work originally started as research for substitution of one material for another frequently develops 212 article which has properties not possessed by the original metal or alloy. I have dwelt particularly on the aluminum bronzes because recently I have done more special work on them than on other alloys, but I believe that the use of aluminum itself, in many combinations of metals, is a very important subject for investigation. Undoubtedly, after the war, the cost of aluminum will be reduced from its present price, and considering its low specific gravity it offers a very interesting and important field for research in the non-ferrous business. Naturally, if combinations containing aluminum can be developed in view of a probably increasing supply of metal, the cost will be reduced. This will benefit the industry generally and will immediately conserve tin. Bronzes, Bearing Metals, and Solders G. K. Burgess* and R. W. Woodward,† Washington, D. C.— From a metallurgical standpoint, there are several ways in which a reduction of the tin consumed in commercial non-ferrous and white-metal alloys can be effected. First, a reduction of the tin content of the alloy; second, substitution of part or all of the tin content by some other metal; third, a substitution of a different type of alloy, which in some cases also involves a change in mechanical design. The Bureau of Standards has been studying these methods of conservation for tin alloys, particularly in regard to babbitts and bearing metals, bronzes, and solders. Much of the information sewed by the Bureau was obtained from answers to questionnaires sent to manufacturers and users of these materials, so that, in general, any of the following suggestions or recommendations can be considered as being practical and as having already been thoroughly tried. It is with sincere regret that the members of the Institute will have heard of the death, on March 17th last, at Terre Haute, Ind., of Professor Charles 0. Thompson, A.M., Ph.D., President of the Rose Polytechnic Institute of that city, and for many years pre viously the head of the Worcester County (Mass.) Free Institute of Industrial Science, and in 1881 and 1882 one of the managers of this society. To us he was chiefly known by the excellent character of the work which he had performed, as a recognized leader among the technical educators of the country. He was a constant, and interested atten dant at our meetings, seeking to acquaint himself not less with all that was noteworthy in the practical attainments and developments of the branches of industry represented by our membership, than with such such facts as would be of service to him in shaping or guiding a wise course of instruction in the institutions of which he had charge. We shall not soon forget him, or the genial courtesy of his manner, or his ready words and thoughtful comments. Charles Oliver Thompson was born September 25th, 1836, at East Windsor Hill, Conn., where his father, Rev. William Thomp son, D.D., was professor in the Connecticut Theological Seminary, since removed to Hartford. The son was fitted for college under the late Paul A. Chadbourne, and entered Dartmouth College in 1854. He was graduated in 1858 with honors. In all the studies of his course he had maintained a high rank, but showed marked proficiency in chemistry and mechanical philosophy. In 1861 he received the degree of A.M., followed by that of Ph.D. from his own college in 1879, and from Williams in 1880. In September, 1858, the year of his graduation, he became principal of the Peacham Academy, Vt., remaining in that position until November of 1864, though during that period he devoted several months to practical work as a surveyor and civil engineer. Thus his experiences were developing the qualities which, later on, fitted him to carry out so successfully the plans of the thoughtful projectors of a new system of technical education, along a path before untrodden, but which the test of time and the indisputable proof of success have shown to be both wise and fruitful.

THE simplicity of the propeller or disk fan, its small size and low cost, has, in recent years, led to an extended use of ventilators of this type at mines where only slight pressure is required. On this account the author of this paper has prepared for the new edition of Peele&apos;s Mining Engineers&apos; Handbook a more accurate method of computing the required size, power, and so forth, than was possible for the first edition. The main object of this paper is to set forth the data collected in the course of that work, and to discuss the subject with more latitude than would have been advisable in a handbook, even if space had been available. Theory of Fans A great deal has been written about the theory of fans from Rankine&apos;s time down to the present. Nevertheless a rigid mathematical analysis of the propeller fan seems to be wanting. A general idea of the mechanics and difficulties in the way of analysis may be gathered from the following: The useful pressure and velocity effects of the oblique impact of the vanes on the axial current would evidently be nil if the blades were perpendicular to the plane of rotation, or if they were of such helicoidal form that the screw pitch multiplied by the speed represented an axial velocity agreeing with the actual velocity. Somewhere between these zero angles there is a pitch which, under given conditions of flow, would produce the maximum useful effect. A true helicoidal blade can be so arranged that it would offer no retarding effect on the air current at any part of the wheel, provided the axial velocity be assumed the same in all parts of the cross-section of the air course, but if plane surfaces are used, it is possible, under some conditions, that the air would be retarded at the middle parts of the wheel while it was accelerated at the circumference. Whatever be the form of vane, it seems evident that the tips are far more effective than the center of the wheel, because of their higher velocity. For this reason some investigators believe that a backward current forms through the middle of the wheel and that part of the air is circulated in a radial axial loop. Ignoring the possible existence of this eddy and the friction of the walls of the air course; and assuming the axial velocity of the air through all parts of the wheel, some rational analysis of the impact might be made according to the theory of deflecting surfaces, were it not

In recent months, public hearings held by the Senate Subcommittee on Minerals, Materials and Fuels on the Stillwater copper-nickel complex in Montana have been reviewed at great length in the press. Although the meetings were well managed by the Subcommittee and questioning was kept in line with the aim of the hearings-namely, how can re- sources be developed in a manner compatible with the preservation of the environment-it was alarming to read the apparently uninformed and questionable arguments presented by some witnesses who were attempting to prohibit mining in the area altogether. One spokesman even went so far as to urge that mining of the area be rejected be- cause, even if the mining operation did not pollute the areas, the effluent and waste produced by the people themselves could constitute a hazard to the environment and to themselves. This, of course, would be true to a point. However, if this or similar types of reasoning were used to reject mining of a large number of orebodies in the future, how is the United States going to meet its future mineral demands and what effect could this have on the economic strength of the country? Fall of the Roman Empire An interesting article in a recent issue of Time magazine came up with a new theory to explain the fall of the Roman Empire. Claire Patterson of CalTec, during a recent study of air pollution, investigated the historical worldwide distribution of lead. As lead was a by-product obtained from silver mining during historical times, he turned his attention to studying the production of silver during those eras. He discovered a very interesting fact-that, I unless the stock of metal is continually being replenished from the mines, accidental loss diminishes a country&apos;s stockpile of silver at a rapid rate, as much as 2 per cent per year. Patterson, a geochemist, theorized that with an accidental loss rate of 2 per cent per year, if the country&apos;s silver supply dried up, the entire existing stockpile could disappear in about a century.

The Cu-Sn-As systeM was studied in the region near the Cu-42 and (214-As binary diagrams, where reactions in the solid state appear, resulting from the decomposition of the y(Cu-Sn) phase and from the formation of the 7 phase (Cu,As). The techniques used were microscopic observation, thermal analysis by dilatometry, and X-vay diffraction. The formation of the 7 phase gives rise to a ternavy pevitectoid veaction; the decomposition of the y phase gives rise to five transitional reactions. The temperatures of almost all these reactions could be determined; in the most favorable cases , the accuracy of this determination was of 11.5-C. The 7 phase is stabilized by tin additions, the arsenic atoms being replaced by tin atoms up to 35 pct; this has allowed the preparation of pure j) phase and the confirmation, by extrapolation, of the conrposition of this compound in the Cu-As diagram. In the first part of this work, the solidification reactions in the Cu-Sn-As phase diagram were studied. In the copper corner, the structure of the alloys presented the evidence of reactions in the solid state: on the one hand, all the alloys containing the y phase of the Cu-Sn diagram showed, under the microscope, that this phase had formed different decomposition products after complete solidification; on the other hand, the appearance of the 7 phase of the Cu-As diagram necessitated the introduction of a peritectoid formation reaction. The study of the decomposition of the y phase has been done by preparing about forty alloys that were homogeneous y at high temperature. The formation of the 7 phase has been studied by means of a few alloys with a composition near the homogeneity field of this phase at room temperature. The part of the Cu-Sn phase diagram of interest for this study is represented by Fig. 1, with the phase designation which will be used in the remainder of this paper; it is drawn after Hansen and Anderko.&apos; The Cu-As diagram has already been presented in Part I of this work; the significant features of this study are the existence of the arsenides CusAs and Cu5Asz, and the formation of a compound CUEAS, designated as the 7 phase, by a peritectoid reaction at about 325°C. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The fundamental technique for the investigation of this part of the Cu-Sn-As constitution diagram was microscopic observation; the greatest part of the observed alloys has also been subjected to thermal analysis by dilatometry; a few selected alloys have then undergone an X-ray analysis by powder diffraction. Alloy Preparation. The alloys were prepared from the same products as in Part I of this study: cathode copper, arsenic with a purity better than 99.5, and tin with a purity of 99.98. Electrical methods and instruments for geophysical exploration have been almost exclusively applied, during these years of development of the art, by a few companies specializing in this field. The control of patents, the cost of the instruments and the general lack of published information on details of field procedure and office interpretation have given these owners a monopoly in carrying out electrical surveys. The development of the Megger Ground Tester1 seems likely to change this situation, and to enable mining engineers and geologists, without special training in geophysics, to carry out simple reconnaissance electrical surveys. Nevertheless, the need for such special training and experience in planning surveys and interpreting their results remains, and probably i always will remain, indispensable for a successful outcome. The unique thing about, the Megger Ground Tester, which gives rise to this hope for its general use, is its simplicity of operation. The four binding posts of the instrument are connected by insulated wires to four stakes driven into the ground at appropriate points. The crank of the Megger is then turned, and the resistance of the ground between the two inside stakes is read directly, in ohms, by the deflection of a pointer over a scale. The apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. Fundamentally, the principle of operation is that of determining the resistance of a four-terminal conductor, as applied by Frank Wenner to the measurement of earth resistivity. "A four-terminal conductor is a conductor provided with two terminals to which current leads may be connected and two terminals to which potential leads may be connected. TO these reports you are referred for additional details of the year&apos;s activity. Finances.-Income for 1933 from all sources totaled $121,690 com- pared with $138,331 in 1932. Incidentally, this exceeded the income as estimated in the budget by $7,190; the largest item being a "surplus" of $3,316 over the budget expectancy as to member dues. As compared with 1932 the most important items of shrinkage in income were $9,000 from dues and initiation fees; $5,500 from the magazine, MINING AND METALLURGY; and $2,500 from sales of publications other than the magazine.

SINCE Noah pitched his ark within and without with pitch, the use of asphalt in human endeavor has been increasing-for Noah&apos;s pitch was asphalt. Asphalt is a bituminous material found in nature, either pure or admixed with smaller or greater quanti-ties of mineral and non-mineral materials, or obtained by the refining of crude asphaltic-base petroleum under proper methods of control. Native or "natural" asphalts are scattered through-out the world, though the commercial value of the various deposits varies greatly, depending upon both their accessibility and magnitude and the quality of the material found. It is an acknowledged fact that such asphalts have been produced through natural causes by practically the same application of tempera-ture and pressure as are used in the modern refining of crude asphaltic-base petroleum. The best known of all the native asphalt deposits are those of Trinidad Lake in the Island of Trinidad, British West Indies, and of Bermudez Lake in Vene-zuela. Asphalt from Trinidad Lake, after refining to remove organic and some inorganic diluents, contains approximately 35 per cent, of inorganic residue, and the asphalt thus produced must be fluxed with lighter asphaltic or semi-asphaltic base oil to make it com-mercially utilizable. The refined asphalt obtained from the Bermudez Lake deposit contains from 4 to 6 per cent. of inorganic material which cannot be removed. This asphalt, also, must be fluxed to produce com-mercial products. Small quantities of similar materials are available in other locations. The best pure native asphalt&apos; is known as. gilsonite and is mined in com-mercial quantities in the State of Utah. In numerous places in the United States, particularly Oklahoma and Kentucky, there are deposits of sand¬stone and limestone impregnated with bitumen, which are known as rock asphalts. These rock asphalts may be used, particularly in the paving industry, either as found or by slight fluxing; from some deposits the asphalt is extracted and marketed commercially.

ALTHOUGH vanadium is an important constituent of almost every brand of high-speed steel manufactured today, little is known as to its role in this series of alloys. The now standard 18 per cent tungsten and 4 per cent chromium constituents were the result of developments and improvements before 1903. In that year, vanadium was added to the steel by Dr. J. A. Mathews. This proved to be an outstanding con-tribution, so that the standard high-speed steel of today is generally referred to as the 18-4-1 type-18 per cent W, 4 per cent Cr and 1 per cent V. Various modifications have been attempted, since then, but with the exception of the introduction of cobalt, no striking improvements have occurred. Vanadium has been increased to 2 per cent in many of the common brands, and at least one brand contains 5 per cent V in addition to the usual tungsten and chromium. The carbon has been gradually increased so that it is not uncommon to find 0.80 per cent in the standard grade, although the carbon in the 5 per cent vanadium steel mentioned above is approximately 1 per cent, and even 1.2 per cent has been made experimentally. The role of vanadium has never been well understood, and although vanadium has been increased to 2.5 and even 5 per cent in certain high speed steels, it has not been generally established that the higher vanadium contents &apos;result in superior cutting properties. However, in all of the investigations, of which the writers are aware, the interrelation of the vanadium and carbon contents was not considered as a prime factor. The carbon content was held at 1.2 per cent or less-generally at the usual 0.65 to 0.75 per cent.

The discovery of the auriferous cement gravel deposits in and near Deadwood Gulch, Lawrence County, Dakota Territory, in 1876, created a mining excitement, and rush to the Black Hills. Numerous ten and twenty-stamp mills were built on Deadwood Gulch; Central City and the town of Deadwood sprang into existence, and became the centres of the mining industry of the Hills. Gold quartz deposits were subsequently discovered and located on a so-called mineral belt, extending from Whitewood Creek on the south, to Deadwood Gulch on the north. A northerly group of these quartz locations was purchased in December, 1877, by parties in San Francisco, who formed a company, incorporated under the name of the Father de Smet Consolidated Gold Mining Company. This company immediately commenced the work of exploration The deposits were proved to be extensive, and easily mined, but it was found that the ore, on an average, would not yield more than $10.00 per ton* of 2000 pounds. • At this trine the cost of supplies and materials in the Hills was high. Miners&apos; wages were $3.50 per diem, and custom mills charged $6.00 per ton. The successful working of mines on "the belt" necessitated cheap milling. Practical and statistical considerations concerned with the sampling, sample preparation and chemical analysis of precious metal ores are reviewed. The principal requirements related with the characteristics of sample cutter, sample preparation, equipment and methods are discussed. The main errors introduced in the different stages of the sampling systems are defined. The application of statistical techniques to evaluate these errors to determine the ore grade variation and to design the number of increments needed to get an accurate assay are presented. Finally, results obtained with the application of this method to gold and silver ores are analyzed and some recommendations are given.

The effects of diesel exhaust on mine ventilation systems are discussed. Mathematical models for emission of gaseous pollutants from diesel engines and their dispersion into mine air have been developed. Situations likely to prevail in mines were originally modeled using partial differential equations, but only simplified solutions are presented here. Validity of these models has been established by field observation of the growth of carbon monoxide concentrations in mine air environment. Consequently, these models can be used for air requirement calculations for diesel engines in underground mines.

DURING the time I was in charge, of this mine, from 1914 to 1915, I had occasion to read the interesting papers by T. T. Read and C. M. Weld about these deposits, to find how far their observations corroborated mine. To quote from the paper on "The Mineral Production and Resources of China" by T. T. Read:&apos; "The iron ores at Tayeh lie along the contact between a marble and an intrusive body of a dark gray syenitic rock. * * * * At one place it is slightly magnetic, apparently having been partly reduced to the magnetic oxide by the action of reducing solutions, which have deposited small amounts of copper and iron sulphides along the foot wall." To quote from the paper on "The Tayeh Iron Ore Deposits"2 by C. M. Weld: "I find the orebodies described as occurring along an approximately E-W contact between horn-blende-granite and limestone. * * * * The granite is a granitoid rock consisting essentially of quartz, potash-feldspar and hornblende." These quotations show the differences of opinion entertained by two observers. My own study of these interesting deposits has been intermittent amid the manifold duties devolving upon a superintendent. General Description of the Deposits The deposits are situated to the west of the Yangtse River, being con¬nected with the river by a standard-gage railroad of 56 li (16.16 miles, 26 km.) in length, as shown in Fig. 1. The general topography of the region is of mature age, showing broad valleys with sluggishly meandering streams. These deposits are worked as two mines, named the Tieh Shan Mining Department and the Teh Tao Wan Mining Department; the former consisting of three orebodies more or less connected, named Tieh Man Kan, Sha Mau Tze and Lung Tung, and the latter consisting of Chang Pei Shan, Sze Tze Shan, Ta Shih Men, Yeh Chih Ping and Tsin Shan, also more or less connected, as shown in Fig. 2.

The central region of the Ti-Mn system was studied by means of x-ray diffraction and metallography. The following intermediate phases were found: an MgZn2-type Laves phase having a wide range of homogeneity, the p-phase of unknozvn structure, and the + -phase with a large tetragonal unit cell, stable at 930°C and lower temperatuves. MaYKUTH, Ogden, and jaffee1 determined the soh-inh bility limits of manganese in and titanium. They also confirmed the structure of the intermediate phase TiMn2 which was previously identified as a Laves phase of the MgZn2 type.2 In the equiatomic region they found an additional intermediate phase, y, which presumably formed by a peritectic reaction at approximately 1200°C. This last observation was disputed by Rostoker, Elliott, and McPhers0n,3 who reported the formation of TiMn by a peritectoid reaction between 900" and 1000° C, but found no evidence of any intermediate phase other than the Laves phase at higher temperatures. Elliott and Rostoker4 reported furthermore that the X-ray diffraction pattern of TiMn could be identified as that of a o phase, although their data were not consistent with this inter~retation. Margolin and Ence6 presented X-ray diffraction data for the and TiMn, phases, and obtained metallographic indications for the existence of additional intermediate phases. They concluded from metallographic observations that two Laves phases are formed, separated by another phase, designated as &. A phase diagram for the Mn-Ti system has recently been published by Savitskii and Kopetskii,&apos; which shows considerable disagreement with the work of Hellawell and Hume-Rothery,&apos; in particular with regard to the terminal solid solutions based on the allotropes of manganese. The present investigation was undertaken primarily to clarify the phase relationships in the equiatomic region of the Ti-Mn system. The metals used in preparing the alloy specimens Were iodide titanium and electrolytic manganese, the latter having a nominal purity of approximately 99.9 pet. The electrolytic manganese was covered with a thick coating of a brown manganese oxide which was reduced by heating the manganese flakes for several hours at a temperature of 1100°C in an atmosphere of dry hydrogen. Three alloys, see Table I, were made using sponge titanium and manganese not treated in hydrogen. The alloys were prepared by arc-melting in an atmosphere of helium or argon. The composition of each alloy was calculated by assuming that the entire weight loss during melting was due to evaporation of manganese. Subsequent chemical analysis of certain alloys indicated that the compositions calculated in this manner were usually correct within 1.4 pct, as shown in Table I. All alloy specimens were wrapped in molybdenum foil before sealing them in silica tubes containing argon at a pressure of 1 atm at the annealing temperature. After quenching in cold water, the alloy specimens were bright and clean, with no evidence of any surface reaction. The objectives of this investigation were to develop a laboratory procedure in which core discing could be produced under known (and variable) stress conditions, and to study the discing characteristics of several fypes of rock. Discing of rock cores refers to the formation of discs or wafers of relatively uniform thickness which fracture or rupture on surfaces approximately *Fracture is a type of failure in which there is a complete loss of cohesion and fresh surfaces are created. Rupture is a type of failure in which there Is only a partial loss of cohesion. normal to the axis to the core (see Fig. 1). Usually the surfaces of the discs are concave-convex with the concave side toward the collar of the hole. The surface of the fractured discs are like those created by a tension failure (or possibly a shear failure with virtually no normal compressive stress). This phenomenon has been observed by a number of investigators1-5 in the course of diamond drilling in underground mines, especially in areas suspected of being under high stress. The state of stress in the core required to produce discing is not exactly known. Tranter and craggs6 theoretically investigated the stress distribution in an infinite cylinder, subjected to hydrostatic pressure, minus p, from z = 0 to z = 8 and unloaded from z = 0 to z = 8, Fig. 2. The exact solution to this problem shows that a tensile stress develops in the loaded region near z = 0 with the greatest tensile stress on the axis of the cylinder. A tensile stress also developed on the surface of the cylinder at a point just outside of the loaded zone. Jaeger and Cook3 experimentally investigated the discing mechanism by biaxially loading cores in a pressure jacket sealed at the ends by O-rings. According to the Tranter and Craggs theory it would be expected that failure should occur at the pressure discontinuity at the O-rings. The experimental results showed that if the specimen was unjacketed it broke at random points within the pressurized zone and at a pressure somewhat greater than the tensile strength of the specimen, presumably due to the development of a

THE purpose of this article is not to compare one type of grinding machinery with another and to conclude from a series of tests that one particular machine is superior to all others. Neither is the reader asked to tire himself with the details of many tests to prove the statements herein made. The Chilean mill stands today almost, in outcast from the milling world. It ranks with the applicant for a job who has been given a trial along with others and condemned because he was not able to perform the definite task assigned as well as the others, and was forever eliminated. The judges did not tarry long enough to try this aspirant in a field of a slightly different nature. Even though it has been condemned, the writer contends that the published records will indicate that the trials were never shifted into the field of greatest efficiency for the Chilean mill. Those of us who cling to this outcast as a fine grinder in our milling operations do not wish, naturally, to be condemned along with the machine, and yet we feel that we are classed as behind the times, at least in this phase of our milling judgment. Hence there is considerable personal feeling in our efforts. During the last few years there have been published several papers on the relative merits of the various grinding machines. In two of these articles a comparison was made between Chilean mills and cylindrical grinders. In each case the Chilean mill came out second best from about all standpoints. The outstanding feature in these comparisons would seem to be the decided attempt to keep all conditions the same, so that each machine could be judged on its merit. As Mr. David Cole states, "We are inclined to regard a direct comparison of grinders arranged side by side, and making a product that affords as nearly as possible the same screen measure, as the Supreme Court in these grinding matters." The writer agrees that this is the very best method for true comparison between machines. The results in the two detailed tests should give the relative merits of the two grinders in doing the work assigned. And they probably do. The conclusion drawn in each case was adverse to the
