SEVERAL distinctions can rightfully be accorded the Bagdad enterprise. For one thing, it has the most romantic name among the Porphyry Coppers and this is said with all due deference to Copper Queen and Inspiration! Bagdad was one of the richest and most magnificent cities of the glamorous world of the Arabian Nights. The record does not say who was responsible for applying the name Bagdad to the company that in 191 1 took over the property of the Arizona-Nevada Copper Company; but whoever it was must have had visions (or at least hopes) of a fabulously profitable mine. So far as I know, Bagdad is the only Porphyry whose owners, or officials, ran afoul of the law because of alleged sins of omission or commission in vending shares of the company's stock. E. B. Bronson, of New York, had been interested in Bagdad since 1909; and, during the lean period of the 1930's he had, as president of the corporation, endeavored to raise needed funds by the sale of 140,000 shares of treasury stock. Some legal questions arose as to the need for registration under the Securities and Exchange Act; but, when Mr. Bronson finally filed a registration statement, the New York office of the Securities and Exchange Commission found 155 "deficiencies" in the document. According to the judge who later heard the criminal case against Bronson, no evidence was introduced to show that he had personally benefited "to the extent of one dollar." However, it was charged that the setup was such that he was in position to profit if he had wanted to! A somewhat quixotic position, it would seem. CYCLONE thickeners are "hydraulic centrifuges" designed either to produce a maximum practical separation between the water and solids of a feed slurry or to classify the slurry solids according to particle settling rate. The possibilities of utilizing the thickener to "close" plant water circuits have been investigated. Since the thickener becomes an integral part of the plant water circuit when installed, the basic means by which the solids content of all circulating water systems must be controlled is reviewed. All coal not separated from the circulating water by means of dewatering screens or settling devices must be bled from the plant at the same rate as they are being fed or created by degradation. If this were not true, the circulated volume would finally be completely filled with solids. If the rate of bleed is low, the solids concentration in the bleed and circulating water generally will be high. To keep a reasonable circulating water concentration, large amounts of fresh water must be supplied and the bleed rate must be high. These conditions are usually undesirable because of the difficulty in securing fresh water, the loss of large quantities of coal, and the pollution of nearby streams. Thickeners are the primary stage in the separation of the water contained in the bleed from the coal. Since a thickener, when operating with reasonable efficiency, usually cannot be expected to deliver an underflow containing less than 50 pct water, secondary dewatering devices such as a slurry screen or vacuum filter must be used to separate additional water from the bleed. The surface area required by the filter or screen will be nearly proportional to the total water which must be handled, and therefore the thickener becomes necessary to hold down the original cost. The water separated from the coal is then returned to the plant circuit to maintain the water balance and thus becomes the source of fresh water. It is not necessary to return clear water to the plant to maintain control of the circulating water concentration. It is only necessary that the bleed dewatering devices remove coal in all sizes at a rate equal to that at which these sizes are entering the circulating water. However, practically speaking, in order to maintain low solids concentration, it is usually necessary that the thickener have good recovery characteristics on bituminous coals in those sizes down to 400-mesh. The thickener can remove the smaller sizes from the closed-circuit system at the "solids in" rate and prevent their "build up" in the circulating water as shown in Fig. 1. With the portion of the feed water going directly to the underflow, comes the very fine solids not concentrated by the cyclone. All the larger solids are removed from the feed and delivered in a concentrated condition at the underflow. To apply thickeners with some reasonable assurance that operating requirements will be met, it is necessary to know the rate at which solids of all sizes must be removed from the circulating water and to know the thickener characteristics. The required removal rate of fine solids not recovered by other dewatering devices may be estimated from the size distribution and tonnage of the plant feed with a reasonable allowance for degradation in the circulating water system. A more reliable estimate may be secured by sampling the plant bleed water during a constant load period.

Approximately 5000 tons of zinc ore a day was mined during 1943 in the Mascot-Jefferson City district in East Tennessee. This ore came from the Kingsport formation, a part of the Knox dolomite, of Ordovician age. The Kings-port is composed of 350 to 400 ft. of limestone and dolomite. Thin cherts, sandy layers and shales are numerous. Frequently, the limestones are altered to crystalline dolomite. The Kingsport is divisible into four main lithologic zones. These divisions are illustrated in an accompanying table, which gives detailed sections of the ore-bearing beds as found in the mines and shows the exact positions of the various ore zones within the formation. Key beds are described and the practical applications of stratigraphy in mapping, prospecting and mining are discussed. Introduction The Mascot-Jefferson City zinc district is in Knox and Jefferson Counties, in the Great Valley of East Tennessee. It extends from Mascot, I3 miles northeast of Knoxville, to Jefferson City, about 30 miles northeast of that city. The American Zinc Company of Tennessee is producing from five mines in the district, in which it has operated for more than 30 years. The only other important producer is the Universal Exploration Co. The approximate daily production of the district in 1943 was 5000 tons of sulphide ore, grading from 2.5 to 6 per cent zinc. Small amounts of oxidized ore are mined intermittently. The Knox dolomite has been described by various geologists,'-' but no detailed descriptions of the rock sections revealed by mining have been published. Rock units are not conspicuously different and careful study is required to distinguish them. Nevertheless, familiarity with the stratigraphy of the mineralized zones is essential to successful exploration and extraction of the ores; therefore the purpose of this paper is to give detailed stratigraphic sections as measured in the mines, to discuss their important features and to show their relationship to the stratigraphy of the district. Generalized Section Table I gives the most characteristic general features of the major stratigraphic units. The formation names given in parenthesis are locally and widely used terms, the correlations of which are not necessarily established. For this reason they are put in quotation marks and are replaced by more restricted terms. The names "Mascot" and "Kingsport" were adopted from local towns. They were chosen jointly by Josiah Bridge, of the Federal Geological Survey, and the senior author for use in their separate unpublished manuscripts describing the Knox dolomite in East Tennessee. Descriptions of the type sections may soon be published. The name "Longview" was first applied by Butts6 in Alabama.

The One Hundred Eighteenth Meeting of the. Institute was held at the Milwaukee Auditorium, on Tuesday,. Oct. 8, to Thursday, Oct. 10, inclusive, 1918, under the joint auspices of the Committee on Iron and Steel (Chairman, Prof. J. W. Richards), and the Institute of Metals Division (Chairman, William M. Corse), and simultaneously with sessions of the American Foundrymen's Association and of the. American Malleable Castings Association. It was preeminently a war meeting. It was attended by 104 members of the Institute. The social features, so far as the members of this Institute were concerned, were slight, but generous and appropriate entertainment was offered to the ladies, consisting of automobile sight-seeing trips, reception, concert and dance on Tuesday evening, a theatre party Wednesday evening, and -a banquet in-the Auditorium Thursday evening, at which the speakers were Charles M. Schwab, Director General of the United States Shipping Board Emergency Fleet Corporation, Major A. Radclyffe Dugmore, and W. H. Blood, Jr., Assistant to the President of the American International Shipbuilding Corporation. A joint session was held on Tuesday morning, at which an address of welcome was delivered by Hon. Emanuel L. Phillipp, Governor of Wisconsin, with a response by Benjamin D. The pre-production interval, beginning with the recognition of an orebody's best potential and ending with significant production, contains time-dependent conditions well appreciated by miners but not always understood or appreciated by the landowners, investors, and legislators with whom a miner must deal. The expression persists, even outside of Western fiction, that someone has "found a mine." From a slightly more knowledgeable position, the question is asked "How long does it take to make a mine?" and an all-encompassing answer is expected. By scanning the discovery and development history of hundreds of mines and rejecting those which involve rehabilitation or expansion of older mines, some generalizations can be attempted. It should be kept in mind that while physical conditions involving the geology of the orebody and the geographic surroundings do not change markedly with time, technologic and economic conditions do change from year to year. The new methods, facilities, markets, land tenure, and politics form a pattern in which today's mines are made and which do sometimes modify the pre-production interval.

In the year 1875, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, acting on incorrect information concerning the production of oil and gas, established what has become the law of the land for the governing of oil production. While the decision was ideal for the refining monopoly which was completed in that year, there is no evidence that the court was in any way influenced by that refining monopoly. The evidence indicates that the court accepted the view of the royalty owner and independent oil producer. Throughout the life of the refining monopoly it accepted this law, which was so evidently to its advantage in securing cheap raw material. The same policy continued until the development of the exhaustion theory and the entry of the various units of the former monopoly into the production of crude oil. It is curious that no one doubted the new theory of shortage sufficiently to feel the need of changing the law. When the theory entered the economic field sufficiently to raise crude oil prices beyond justification it shortly disproved itself, but by this time the question of split ownership in producing fields made a change from legal error to justice too complicated to be undertaken by the large companies. Not even the ardent advocate of unit operation dared to carry the question to the United States Supreme Court, which has never been asked to pass on the complete question. The impossible position of the producing industry, hemmed in on one side by court law compelling wasteful production and on the other by the national law against cooperation, lasted until the demoralization of 1927 led to cooperation within a state and under state guidance. Since that time control of production has grown with the bringing in of each new field and at this time has the active support of the Department of the Interior in such ways as are definitely legal. As in 1875, the royalty owner and independent producer are opposing by all possible means the rational conduct of the business of producing crude oil. The motivation for the art of dredging for placer mining can be compared in a slight degree to the spread of civilization which started in the Near East and spread both east and west. Dredging started with the "bag and spoon" dredge in the lowlands of Europe reportedly about 1565, went southeast to New Zealand where designs were developed for a bucket-line mining dredge known as the New Zealand type, and westward to the eastern United States where a dredge was developed and used exclusively for excavating. Then it moved to Montana, where it was first used for mining in 1895. The New Zealand-type dredge was imported into California in 1898 (Fig. 1) and was followed shortly by the Montana design. As today, these early dredges were equipped with continuous bucket- line chains, a treatment plant, and a means of waste disposal mounted on a wooden hull. Both types of dredges are complete mining units: they dig the formation, transport the dug materials, and concentrate the valuable ore. After sizing, the fines containing the ore are passed by gravity to the treatment unit, while the barren materials are discharged overboard. By digging the materials to be treated at the bow and depositing all the waste, at the stern, the dredges automatically advance to new reserves without presenting any transportation problems. The main differences between the two types are in the method of holding the dredge in the digging position and in the disposal of the tailings to the rear. The New Zealand type (Fig. 2) uses the headline system with a bow anchor for holding the dredge in the digging position and long tailing flumes or short stackers off the stern for disposal of the barren materials. In most branches of the mining industry it is a well-recognized fact that care must be taken to protect the mineral deposit from undue physical injury. It is comparatively easy to grasp this idea when the mineral is a solid and the lives of workmen depend directly upon the care with which it is removed from its natural position, but when the product is a liquid drawn up from pools several thousand feet beneath the surface of the ground through openings only a few inches in diameter, it requires some imagination to picture underground conditions and the changes which must often occur. The development of the petroleum deposits of California has been attended by numerous accidents, the results of which are readily noticed at the top of the wells and in the profit and loss accounts of the operators. Determination of the cause of these accidents has been the subject of considerable study, which naturally has fallen upon men familiar with technical methods. The greatest damage to the oil deposits of California has resulted from water finding its way into the oil-bearing sands, and it is the purpose of this paper to set forth briefly this phase of the oil industry. Much of the material here presented has previously appeared in publications issued by the California State Mining Bureau, which, under the direction of State Mineralogist Fletcher McN. Hamilton, has investigated the subject and taken steps toward improvement of conditions. The writer, having been in charge of this branch of the Bureau work, has gained considerable knowledge of existing conditions. Generally speaking, the oil-bearing formations of California are soft, unconsolidated sand beds, separated by clay strata, which are also soft. Some of the sand beds carry water instead of oil. All of the beds are more or less separated, probably being of lenticular shape. Very few of the beds in the oil fields lie flat or undisturbed over any great area. Folding and tilting are common, and faulting also occurs in some of the fields. The accumulation of oil is not confined to any single structural feature, such as the anticline, but occurs in many other structural features. The writer has been interested in determining the mineralogic dis-t,ribut.ion of silver in the base-metal ore of thc Ground Hog mine of the Asarco Mining Co. in the Central mining district of New Mexico.' This ore consists of a varitextured mixture of sphalerite, chalcopyrite, galena and pyrite in a quartz gangue. The average ore contains 14 per cent of zinc, 9.5 per cent of lead, 5 per cent of copper, and 10 oz. of silver per ton. Generally it is accepted that the silver in ores of this type, in which no definite silver minerals can be recognized, is contained in the base-metal minerals. Published assays of pure mineral specimens from many districts show that each of the base-metal minerals contributes in some degree to the total silver content of the ores, and to determine the proportionate amount contributed by each mineral in any specific ore it has been the practice to assay selected specimens of each mineral, the purity of which has been determined microscopically. There being no such assays available for the Ground Hog ore, and it being impracticable to have enough of them made to give average results, the writer resorted to a mathematical attack upon composite assays of large quantities of ore and concentrates. Surprising results were obtained, and it is the threefold purpose of this paper to present these results, to describe the mathematical method used, and to point out the value of using this method even when assays of pure specimens are available. Value of the Mathematical Method The obvious way of attacking the problem would be to separate cleanly large quantities of ore into its component minerals and then to determine the average silver content of each mineral by assay of representative samples. Since an absolutely clean separation is not feasible, it has been the practice, as mentioned above, to assay pure specimens of the different minerals. No one will contend seriously that the silver content of a base-metal mineral is constant throughout any particular deposit, and it will

At the meeting of the Board of Directors of the Institute on Jan. 26, 1917, the following actions were taken: Messrs. A. C. Clark, Lawrence Addicks and G. D. Van Arsdale were appointed Tellers to count ballots for Officers and Directors. Messrs. T. T. Read, V. S. Harper, and. E. J. Hall were appointed Tellers to count ballots on revised spelling. The Finance Committee's audit for the year 1916 was approved and ordered filed. The Report of the Finance Committee upon the method of raising this Institute's share of the deficit on the additions to the building was approved and accepted. Upon the recommendation of the Secretary, increases in the salaries of some of the employees were approved. The St. Louis Section received an appropriation of $200 for the year 1917. The Columbia Section received an appropriation of $150 for the year 1917. The Montana Section received an appropriation of $100 for the year 1917. The Colorado Section received an appropriation of $175 for the year 1917. The Utah Section received an appropriation of $125 for the year 1917. The Puget Sound Section received a set of Transactions in standard binding. The International Engineering Congress received a loan of $300 until the Congress can realize upon some of its assets.

H. J. Kamack (E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co., Inc., Wilmington, Del.)—Rittinger's law usually is stated to the following effect: "The work (or energy) consumed in particle size reduction is proportional to the new surface area produced." The law has been stated substantially in this way by Taggart20 Berry21 Dalla Valle22 Coghill and DeVaney,23 Richards and Locke," Gross,25 and many others, and, according to Gaudin,26 was originally expressed by Rittinger in the same form. Consequently there can be little doubt that this is the understanding of the law among most workers in the field of particle size reduction. Bond and Wang, however, express the law in the form "the useful work accomplished . . . ." (italics theirs). The distinction is critical, for in the form used by Bond and Wang the law becomes, as they themselves remark "merely a more or less arbitrary definition of useful work," while in its usual sense the law expresses a physical hypothesis which has been verified experimentally within certain limitations. Considering the way the law has been used, it might be stated more explicitly as follows: "In a given machine operating under a given set of constant operating conditions, the work consumed in the particle size reduction of a given material is proportional to the new surface area produced." Or, as Coghill and deVaney have said,27 "the (Rittinger) law holds only when the tests being compared are made under analogous conditions." There are occasions when the law transcends these limitations; for example, the surface area produced per unit energy consumption for a given material in a ball mill does not vary much over a fairly wide range of operating conditions. But by and large, the surface area production per unit energy consumption will vary with the operating conditions, the type of machine, and the material. The essence of Rittinger's law is that the surface area production per unit energy consumption is independent of the particle size, and this has been verified experimentally by numerous workers for numerous materials, within certain limits. An important limitation is that when one grinds to very small particle sizes, agglomerative forces may tend to interfere with size reduction so that the surface area increases less rapidly than Rittinger's law would predict. Within such limitations, Rittinger's law can be regarded as empirically established. The law has, however, certain theoretical implications, and it seems to be chiefly against these that Bond and Wang direct their criticism. Solids are believed to possess surface energy which is proportional to surface area. Thus, Rittinger's law implies a proportionality between surface energy produced and mechanical energy expended (for a particular material in a particular machine). It does not imply that all or most of the mechanical energy is transformed into surface energy; in fact it is known that most of the mechanical energy is transformed into heat. Bond and Wang assert that most of this heat arises from the damping of elastic vibrations of stressed particles. This may possibly be true for crushing (with which they are chiefly concerned), although in grinding it is probable that much of the heat arises from friction between particles. However, the fact that the surface energy is small compared to the heat energy does not invalidate Rittinger's law, which implies merely that they are proportional. The authors also criticize Rittinger's law on the grounds that "this theory cannot be justified mathematically, since work is the product of force times distance, and the distance factor is ignored," and "energy input must be the product of force times distance, and the Rittinger theory completely ignores large variations in the distance (strain dimension or deformation) throughout which a force must act to produce breakage of different materials." However, the quantities force and distance as such are irrelevant to Rittinger's law, which considers energy input as an integral quantity. The fact that different materials require different forces and strains (hence, different amounts of energy) to break them is incontrovertible but again is irrelevant to Rittinger's law, which, as mentioned before, applies -only to a single material. Even in theory, it would not be expected that the surface area produced per unit energy consumption would be the same for different materials, because the surface energy per unit area is presumably specific to each material. The platinum-rich section of the Ta-Pt Phase diagram was worked out by metallographic and X-ray techniques, using twenty alloys; solidus temperatures and solid solubilities were determined. Besides s phase, four intermediate stoi-chiometric phases were found: TaPt (high-temperatzrre phase, structure unknown); TaPt2 (ortho-rhomhic, new type); a TaPt3 (orthorhombic, TiCu3 type); ß TaPf3 (monoclinic, new type). TaPt2 and TaPt3 melt congmentlv; two eutectic, two beritec-tic, and one eutectoid reactions occur in the inuestigated range. THE Ta-Pt system was examined as part of a study of the phase diagrams and the intermediate phases of niobium and tantalum with Group VIII transition metals. Since the main scope of this work was the relation among the ordered close-packed phases occurring in the concentration range from AB to AB3 (A = Nb, Ta; B = Pd, Pt, and so forth), only the platinum-rich side of the diagram was worked out thoroughly, while spot checks were made to determine the approximate outline of the tantalum-rich portion. The system has not been thoroughly treated in the literature; Greenfield and Beck1 in their survey of refractory metal intermediate phases found a o phase between -18 and 37 at. pct Pt which coexists at higher platinum concentrations with an unidentified intermediate phase. Browning2 worked on the range between 55 and 100 at. pct Pt; however, this preliminary study did not cover temperatures >1500°C, and included no conclusive crystallo-graphic data. More recently, a study of the platinum-rich section of the Ta-Pt system has been carried out by Ray,3 while Hartley, Parsons, and steedly4 have studied the tantalum-rich section. The crystal structures of TaPt2, a TaPt3, ß TaPt3, and others have been reported in abstracted form by Giessen and Grant.5 EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The methods of alloy preparation and processing and of the metallographic and X-ray procedures follow very closely those described by Ritter, Giessen, and rant' for other refractory metal-noble metal systems, and will not be repeated except where significant differences exist. Starting materials were: tantalum rod of 99.95 pct purity, supplied by National Research Corp., and platinum sponge 99.9 pct, supplied by The International Nickel Co. An oxygen analysis of the tantalum rod showed 30 ppm O; other impurities were C, N, Si, Nb, Mo, none of these exceeding 50 ppm, and 100 ppm W. Homogeneous buttons were readily prepared as follows: ingots of 5 g were weighed and arc-melted under welding grade argon, followed by two remelts after inverting the button. Between 40 and 100 at. pct Pt, weight losses during the first melt rarely exceeded 0.1 pct, in which case the alloy was rejected, and were nil on subsequent remelts. Since the vapor pressure of platinum far exceeds that of tantalum, the small evaporation loss could be assumed to consist of platinum; therefore, a corresponding amount of platinum was added on the second melt. Since it was confirmed on pure tantalum samples that no weight gain through oxygen or impurity pickup occurs (see Ref. 71, it could be assumed that the uncertainty in the composition did not exceed ±0.1 at. pct for the range 40 to 100 at. pct Pt. For the four control melts from 0 to 40 at. pct Pt, an error of ±0.5 at. pct was calculated. Microscopic examination of the whole buttons after melting showed no inhomogeneity other than local coring. This was eliminated by a homogenization heat treatment. The strain-amplitude- dependent part of the internal friction of alluminum after several ther momechanical treatments has been measured in the I-cycle range and at the ambient temperature. The internal friction in the outer layer of the torsional specimen us stress is computed from the experimental data. The curues obtained are analyzed in tevnzs of u coirzbinntion of AH and p, which aye, respectively, due to the vecersible unpinning from weak pills and to the plastic strain. Considerirlg the notion of thermally activated unpinning and repinning, it is shown that in our experimental conditions tlze dislocation lines acl as in the H model of Granato and Liiclze. It is also seen that the internal friction p which appears at higher- strains call be described by a simple expression which is in good agreement with our results. A qualitative interpretatiorz is proposed by combining these new types of intelpnal fviction. We define the internal friction 6 as half the ratio of the dissipated energy aW during one cycle to the maximum supplied strain energy W of a material submitted to a periodic stress. Experiment and theory show that internal friction varies with stress above a critical value.' Below this value the internal friction is strain-amplitude-independent and is often masked by an experimental background; so we shall call it AB. ~bove this critical value, the internal friction is strain-amplitude-dependent. This quantity is usually called aH:' and it can be explained as a thermal unpinning of dislocations.3-6 Furthermore, at higher stresses, a rapid increase of internal friction appears. This phenomenon could be caused by the plastic strain,' so we shall call it Ap. It seems interesting to us to study the influence of several t her momechanical treatments on the curve internal friction 6 vs strain E, in order to study the variation of AH and p with the concentration and the repartition of linear and point defects. In order to try to explain the results obtained, we shall propose and discuss models for H and hp and shall show that we obtain a combination of these two types of internal friction. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE 1) Preparation and Treatment of Specimens.
