(communication to the Secretary*) :—The paper of Mr. Eeyes gives us the most complete account of the geology of the borax-deposits in the Death Valley region that has yet been published, and is a valuable addition to the geological literature of a very interesting though little-known territory. During the past ten years I have been over much of the northern part of the country described by Mr. Eeyes and the region immediately north of it.

The nmgnetic susceptibility of heat-treatable aluminuin alloys is sensitive to chanyes such as solution or dissolution of solute and the precipitation of mew phases. By measuring the change in the magnetic susceptibility of aluminum alloys caused by various heat treatments, an empirical relation was found from which atomic arrangements in dilute binary alloys of copper, zinc, and magnesiutn in aluminum have been delineated. The relation predicts the ultimate formation of C1LA12 when copper is precipitated from solid solution in aluminum. Euidexce joy silovt- range order is found for copper in solid solution in aluminum in the sense that copper atoms avoid being nearest neighbors to an extent greater than would result from a purely random arrangertzeizt. Hume-Rothery has predicted such short-range order joy solid solution of copper in aluminum The Al-Zn system agrees with evidence obtained from X-ray scattering at small angles and predicts a tendency for zinc atoms to cluster in solid solution in aluminum. In the Al-mg system, the empirical relation indicates an approach to randor distribution of magnesium in solid solution in aluminum with a tendency for magnesium segvegation which increases with incveasing temperature. ThE magnetic properties of metals are complicated by the fact that contributions are made to them both by electrons of a "metallic" type which belong to the crystal as a whole, and by electrons in states localized on particular atoms. An expression1'2 for the bulk magnetic susceptibility of aluminum may be written as the sum of three contributions: where XA1 is the bulk susceptibility of aluminum per gram of material (in the cgs system, the units are those of reciprocal density); Xa1+3 is the diamagnetic contribution of the electrons localized in ion cores; Xa1 is. the paramagnetic spin contribution of conduction electrons often called Pauli paramag-netism: Xa1 is the diamagnetic contribution of the conduction electrons often called Landau diamag-netism. Ion core diamagnetism arises from the precession of the electron orbits which occurs when a magnetic field is applied to a system of electrons moving about a nucleus. Its contribution to the magnetic suscepti- bility is small, temperature-independent, and unaffected by alloying. The conduction electron diamagnetism is also temperature-independent and arises from the translatory motion of the electrons. For perfectly free electrons this contribution should be exactly one-third of the Pauli spin paramagnetism, but this relation is seldom even approximately true. Blythe2 determined the conduction electron diamagnetism in pure aluminum and found it to be extremely small. Any change in the conduction electron diamagnetism caused by alloying is neglected in this work. The Pauli paramagnetic contribution3 to the magnetic susceptibility of aluminum depends upon the number of electrons that occupy excited states and whose spins can be turned parallel to an applied magnetic field. The number of electrons free to turn in the field is proportional to the temperature and each spin contribution to the susceptibility is inversely proportional to the temperature. A slight temperature dependence of Pauli paramagnetism occurs when the number of electrons occupying excited states cannot increase sufficiently to balance the inverse dependence on temperature of each spin contribution. The decrease of the magnetic susceptibility of aluminum with increasing temperature is attributed to a temperature dependence of the Pauli paramagnetism. Estimates of the Pauli paramagnetism of aluminum have been made by several workers.2,4,5 All of the values are in reasonably good agreement with each other. In this work Xal at 17°C is taken as 0.761 X 10-8 cu cm per g. An expression similar to [I] can be written for the magnetic susceptibility of an aluminum base alloy containing a fractional weight percent x of solute:' Xa = (1 -x)XAl+3 +xXsoluteion * XaPauli +Xadia) [2] where X, is the magnetic susceptibility per gram of alloy, Xal'3and Xsolute ion are the ion core diamag-netic contributions, and xpauli and xdia are the Pauli and diamagnetic contributions of conduction electrons in the alloy. If the components of a mixture are not alloyed but simply mixed together in their pure states without producing a new phase, then the magnetic susceptibility of the mixture is given by the Wiedemann additivity law: Xm =x1X1 +x2x2 + ..xnxp [3] where X, is the susceptibility per gram of mixture and xnXp are the weight fractions and susceptibilities, respectively,-. for the pure components. The additivity law is not applicable to alloys because the outer electronic structures of the components are changed by alloying.' Both the Pauli paramagnetism and Landau diamagnetism are affected; hence the magnetic susceptibilitv of an alloy is usually different from that calculated using the additivity law. In this work the difference, X, -X,, is taken as a measure of the change caused by alloying.

Joseph Esrey Johnson, Jr., had already achieved rare distinction as an able metallurgist, clear thinker, brilliant author, and wise consulting engineer to bankers and operators; he had achieved the essentials of a great career when death cut short his activities on Apr. 4, 1919, in the forty-ninth year of his age. He belonged to a family of iron blast-furnace men and mine managers. His father, Major J. E. Johnson, after serving with distinction in the Army of the North, identified himself with the iron mines and blast furnace at Longdale, Va., with which he was connected during almost his entire business life. It is significant that, during those troublous times of reconstruction in the South, he enjoyed always the affection and respect of his neighbors and associates alike. From him his son obtained not only a thorough training in blast-furnace practice and iron mining, but great personal courage and force of character. His mother, who survives both her husband and sons, possesses rare intellectuality, humor and a tenderness and human sympathy which those who were privileged to know well J. E. Johnson, Jr., recognized beneath his exterior of aggressiveness and will power. In a recently published analysis of the qualities which characterize the world's great men, three traits stand out preeminently; viz., independence, courage, and intellectuality. Each of these characteristics J. E. Johnson, Jr., possessed in extraordinary degree. His early education was obtained under a private tutor at Longdale, and this circumstance probably enhanced , a natural tendency to independence of character and individuality which, however, under the control of his

IN endeavoring to put the art of the steelmaker on a more scientific basis, as a means of securing closer control of the product, we must be severely critical of the basis of any theory we use. In particular, we must be careful to distinguish between factors that are primary and those of only secondary importance. The concentration relations that determine the slag-metal equilibria, which are usually more or less closely attained, are of course of primary significance, but a clear picture of the whole process requires that the actual rates of the several reactions be taken properly into account. At the high temperature of the steelmaking furnace, all reactions might be thought to be very rapid, but some of them in fact are not; the essential causes of this condition are important to a proper understanding of the process. This paper aims to present, and to justify, the viewpoint that the most significant reaction is the oxidation of carbon in the metal, the progress of which determines the oxygen pressure levels in slag and metal and produces stirring effects, all of which influence the course of the process as a whole. REACTION RATES AT STEELMAKING TEMPERATURES General experience in reaction rates makes it almost certain that at steelmaking temperatures equilibrium is attained practically instantaneously when the reactants are well distributed in a single liquid phase -that is, in the so-called homogeneous reactions. The actual slowness of some of the reactions in the open-hearth furnace must therefore be attributed to a relatively slow rate of diffusion within the slag or metal phase, which limits the rate at which the reactants can meet each other in the liquid steel or at its surface. That the reactions can be made to go with great rapidity, by proper mixing and stirring of the reacting phases, is indicated by the following illustrations: I. In the Bessemer process there is intimate contact between air and the whole mass of metal, and the reactions are complete in a few minutes. 2. Perrin1 has demonstrated that by pouring liquid steel into slag contained in a deep ladle, and thereby producing almost a slag-metal emulsion, the phosphorus or oxygen content of the steel is adjusted immediately. 3. Barret, Holbrook and Woods observed a quite rapid rate of desulphurization when powdered calcium carbide was stirred vigorously into liquid iron. 4. When a spoonful of liquid steel is poured into a mold containing aluminum wire, the formation and precipitation of alumina occurs in the fraction of a second required to freeze the surface layer of the tiny ingot. The first three examples all show that any means of increasing the effective surface between slag and metal and promoting intimate mixture of the reacting phases, thereby obviating the limitation imposed by diffusion, will enhance the speed of the steelmaking process.

There is considerable interest in beryllium because of its low density (1.84 g per cu cm), high modulus of elasticity (40 X 106 psi), high melting point (1280°C), and special nuclear characteristics. Moreover, it has fair resistance to corrosion and oxidation. However, the purest beryllium known to the authors is relatively brittle at room temperature, and cannot be fabricated readily. The search for improved properties leads naturally to investigations of beryllium alloys and the phase relationships upon which they are based. The present paper is concerned with the alloys of beryllium and iron, primarily from the standpoint of the equilibrium diagram. Iron was selected (1) because of its all-round importance in metallurgy, and (2) because the beryllium-iron system is known to be quite complex. The most recent diagram in the literature is that of Gaev and Sokolov,' and covers only the iron-rich end up to 16 wt pct beryllium. Beryllium markedly restricts the austenitic field, closing the gamma loop at about 0.4 wt pct (3 at. pct). On the other hand, beryllium is soluble in a-ferrite up to a maximum of 7.5 wt pct (34 at. pct) at the eutectic temperature of 1160"C. The eutectic composition lies at 10 wt pct beryllium (42 at. pct) and corresponds to a mixture of or and FeBez (called j3 in the present paper). The solid solubility of beryllium in the a phase decreases with decreasing temperature, and makes precipitation-hardening possible. These findings substantiate the earlier work of Oester-held,2 Wever and Mueller3 and Laissus.4 In addition to the FeBe2 (ß) mentioned above, Misch6 has reported on FeBes, and indicated evidence for another compound containing still more beryllium. A preliminary diagram by Gordon,5 not hitherto published, is given in Fig 1. Besides the phases previously named, there are shown a solid solution of extended range (e), a compound of limited solubility (t), and a high temperature phase (7). Beryllium is designated as 8. The t field contains the compound composition FeBea, and the f phase undoubtedly corresponds to the beryllium-rich compound found by Misch.6 The region around the { phase was proposed by R. J. Teitel based on Gordon's data. The details of the diagram are self-explanatory. It was the unusual complexity of this system that prompted the authors to undertake the present studies. By the same token, more emphasis was placed on the beryllium-rich than the iron-rich end of the diagram. Exprimental Details RAW MATERIALS The beryllium employed in this investigation was one of the purest grades available. Its chemical analysis after vacuum melting is given in Table 1. The metal assayed 99.4 wt pct beryllium. Vacuum melted electrolytic iron of purity shown in Table 1 was the source of iron.

IN attempting to describe recent mining developments at the Bunker Hill mine, it may be well to recall first the old days of hand mining when holes were laboriously drilled by hand to a maximum depth of three feet, and were shot one or two at a time, in order that the miner could take advantage of every slip, crack or bedding plane, and so save as much drilling as possible. Broken muck, of course, was loaded by hand shoveling into wheelbarrows or small cars, and heading advances or stope ton¬nages were governed by the number of men that could find room to work in any given place. The first big improvement over these old methods was the introduction of the reciprocating type of air-powered rock drill. This innovation, crude as it was, enabled the miners to set up a machine and drill a complete round of holes in one shift; but broken muck was still loaded by hand, and the size and rate of advance in headings were limited by time required to remove the broken rock. The next improvement of consequence was the appearance of the hammer-type rock drill, which greatly increased drilling speed over the reciprocating type, and made possible the completion of a full cycle in one shift, by the use of crossbars in headings, and permitted drilling and mucking to be carried on at the same time. Rock drills continued to improve as time passed, and finally the smaller and more efficient mucking machines appeared on the scene, and it became possible to muck out a round of broken rock and have a clean setup for one or more drill columns and machines. A complete cycle of mucking, drilling, and blasting was completed in one shift with an average advance of five feet. These conditions prevailed for several years, but as the mine grew deeper, the distances to transport the workers grew longer, and this fact together with the shortening of the working day, soon presented the problem of attempting to complete a cycle of operations in a shift of only six hours at the working faces. Anticipating this condition, the operating heads at the Bunker Hill had started an intensive study of more and better mechanization, and over a period of comparatively few years have adopted and placed in service methods and machines that make it possible for a three-man crew to consistently advance headings seven by nine feet in cross section, at the rate of eight feet, and more, per shift, doing all the mucking, switching, drilling and loading. These improvements consist of the following major items: I. The development of a light, flexible, easily transported jumbo equipped with pneumatic columns (Fig I), that has decreased the "setting up" and "tearing down" time an average of 1 1/2 hr per shift, or 25 pct of the available working time. These jumbos were developed at the Bunker Hill mine by members of the staff and consist of two pneumatic columns attached to a suitable carriage. They fold

The Rawley property is located in the Kerber Creek mining-district, Saguache county, Colorado, at an elevation of 10,600 ft. (See sketch-map, Fig. 1.) Ore was found in this vicinity as early as 1880, and claims covering a large area were located and in many instances patented. The ores, however, being of comparatively low grade, and the nearest railway station, Villa Grove, being some 20 miles away, it is extremely doubtful whether any considerable amount of ore was ever handled at a profit. It is safe to say that several hundred thousand dollars were spent (a large part in building mills) previous to 1902-03. About that time a very capable promoter gathered together a group of these claims and interested some New York people, who had had no previous mining experience, in the purchase of these claims. Following the organization of a company, this promoter became General Manager. As often happens under such conditions, the first step was to erect a mill to treat 100 tons per day. It may not be fair to this enterprise to say that the failure which followed might have been foretold, simply on general principles, but this much is certain—the water supply fluctuates in the course of a season through a wide range and for a considerable portion of the year was inadequate to run this mill at capacity. Further, it is currently reported that some of the mill foundations were placed on ice. However true this statement may be, it is a fact that, when first inspected by us, many of the belts in the mill were held on'their pulleys by means of idlers. A shut-down followed, with a material re-adjustment of interests, at which time we became consulting engineers for the company.

The refinery at the San Francisco Mint takes the bullion purchased by the receiving department, and carrying Illore than 200 parts of precious metals in 1,000, or, in mint parlance, over 200 fine, and separates and refines the various metals contained therein, using electrolytic processes exclusively. Bullion containing silver is treated in cells charged with a nitric electrolyte. These cells produce fine silver and leave a residue rich in gold. The residue from the silver-cells, together with crude gold-bullion, is treated in cells having a chloride electrolyte. These produce fine gold and leave a residue containing silver chloride. The latter is reduced to the metallic state with zinc and is then treated in the silver-cells. The various waste solutions and the wash-waters, after being freed from the bulk of their precious metals, still contain copper and other metals. These are removed by scrap-iron, and are then treated in the copper-cells, having a sulphate electrolyte. These cells produce pure copper, and collect a residue containing lead, some gold and silver, and all the metals of the platinum gronp that were in the bullion. This residue is relatively small, and is melted into bars and stored until suEcient accumulates to warrant treating it for platinum, etc. The refinery occupies three large and three small rooms. The large ones are, a melting-room, 30 by 34 ft.; a cell-room, 39 by 46 ft.; and a wash-room, 30 by 33 ft. The small rooms are used as foreman's osce, laboratory, and , re- spectively. The methods here described are those in use in December, 1909, when notes for the present paper were taken.

Pure copper that has been allowed to oxidize at an elevated temperature in the air is found to be covered with two distinguishable layers of oxide scale. The outer of these, which is very thin, is composed of cuprie oxide, while the inner layer, comprising the bulk of the scale, is made up chiefly of cuprous oxide (Fig, la). If a small quantity of an alloying element, such as silicon, is present in the copper, silica particles are found disseminated through the cuprous oxide, deposited most abundantly near the metal surface, and, in addition, silica particles occur to a limited depth within the copper itself (Fig. 1b). It is this inner layer, composetl of oxide particles precipitated in a matrix of metallic copper, that is known as the "subscale" or the zone of internal oxidation. Under a low oxygen pressure it is possible to produce the subscale without the formation of external layers of copper oxides, thus leaving the metal surface bright and apparently clean while oxidation has occurred, in fact, to a considerable depth within the metal (Fig. 2). Although little is yet known in a detailed way of the mechanism of internal oxidation, the general nature of the process is evident. By virtue of the considerable solubility of oxygen in copper,' it is possible to bring the alloying element in contact with oxygen within the metallic solid solution. If the oxide of the alloying element is more stable than cuprous oxide, the foreign oxide may form and, since most oxides are relatively insoluble in copper, it will not long remain in solution, but mill separate as a precipitate. As the metallic solute is exhausted in the zone of precipitation, oxygen that is constantly being supplied at the surface diffuses farther into the alloy and thus produces an ever-thickening shell of subscale. The distribution of the reacting elements in the subscale and adjoining zones must be somewhat as indicated in Fig. 3. The conditions requisite to internal oxidation to be anticipated are thus: (I) a solubility of oxygen in the alloy, (2) the ability of oxygen to diffuse at an appreciable rate into the alloy, (3) the possibility of the

THIS investigation was undertaken as a prerequisite to the study of sulphur activities in the liquid system Fe-Cu-Ni, a continuation of the work of Sherman, Elvander, and Chipman,¹ using the same equipment and the same experimental technique. Temperature measurements are made with a disappearing filament optical pyrometer, sighting through a prism onto the surface of the melt which is heated by induction. To obtain true temperatures by this means, a calibration is necessary, since, in the absence of true black-body conditions, the observed temperature is always lower than the true temperature. This calibration is actually an emissivity correction, since the emissivity is a function of both temperature and melt composition. The original furnace was used with a deeper metal bath to provide sufficient depth of immersion for the thermocouple which was inserted through the sampling hole. The atmosphere was a 50-50 mixture or argon and hydrogen passing through the furnace at a rate of 1000 ml per min, and preheated by means of a molybdenum resistance coil. It was assumed that the rapid gas flow effectively eliminated any error which might have resulted from the presence of metallic vapor. The charge in each case consisted of about 300 g of metal, contained in a high purity, dense alumina crucible. At each melt composition, readings of the optical pyrometer and of a thermocouple immersed in the molten metal were taken simultaneously. Calibration curves of optical vs. true temperature were then made for each melt composition investigated. Thermocouples were made of 0.010 in. platinum and platinum-10 pct rhodium. They were checked against the melting point of chemically pure copper. Silica protection tubes with an outer diameter of approximately 1/8 in. were used. The depth of immersion of the tip in the molten metal was approximately 1 14 in. The life of these small thermocouples was relatively short, varying from approximately 1 min at 1550°C to 10 min or longer at 1300°C. Melts containing iron corroded the protection tubes more than those without iron present. Measurements taken while heating checked those taken while cooling, indicating the absence of a temperature gradient between the molten metal and the thermocouple. Results The temperature range of the. measurements on copper-free metals extended from the melting point to 1600°C. For copper the upper limit was 1380°C, and the data were extrapolated linearly for comparison with observations on the other metals and alloys at 1535°C. Examples of typical calibration curves for various melt compositions are shown in Fig. 1. These curves, besides providing a calibration system for the given experimental conditions, also give a basis for the calculation of true emissivities at the effective wavelength of the pyrometer, 0.65 micron. The starting point of the calculations is the value of the emissivity of iron at its melting point. Taking the melting point of electrolytic iron under hydrogen as 1535°C, and using the corresponding emissivity value of 0.43, as determined by Dastur and Gokcen,² the emissivities can be determined as functions of composition (and temperature, if desired). The relationship used is the Wien equation: ln(Ea)=C2/?(1/T1-1/Ta where E is the emissivity; a, the transmissivity of the optical system; C,, the fundamental constant, 14,380 micron-degrees; A, the wave length of light used (0.65 micron); Tt, the true temperature, OK; and T., the apparent temperature, OK. At the melting point of iron the observed temperature was 1358"; this gives 0.62 for the transmissivity, which compares with 0.65 in the similar system used by Dastur and Gokcen. The emissivities of all the compositions investigated were determined at 1535°C, after obtaining from each calibration curve the corresponding temperature. These results

A high-purity copper-zirconium alloy system was imesti-gated. The zirconium content of the alloys studied varied from 0.003 to 0.23 pet. The solid solubility of zirconium in copper and some physical and mechanical properties of the alloys have been determined. By proper heat treatment, Cu-Zr alloy can develop a high electrical conductivity and resistance to softening at temperatures up to 500°C (930°F). This combination of desirable properties makes this alloy superior, to other com-merzcrrl copper base alloys for- use in the electrical conductor field. DEMAND for high conductivity copper alloys that retain their mechanical properties at elevated temperatures is growing rapidly. At present, copper-base alloys such as copper-silver and copper-chromium are used where these characteristics are required. As an example, commutators in electric motors are often made of these alloys. However, the life at elevated temperature of commutators made of copper-silver alloys is much shorter than the life of the same part made of copper-chromium and copper-zirconium alloys. Copper-silver alloys are subject to creep and subsequent failure when the service temperature exceeds several hundred degrees centigrade. Use of copper-chromium alloys has been known for the past several years, but little information is available in the literature concerning the properties of alloys in the copper-zirconium alloy system. Some work had been directed toward determining the solubility of zirconium in copper as well as determining properties of the Cu-Zr alloys. These investigations have revealed the superior high-temperature and electrical conductivity properties of copper-zirconium alloys over copper-chromium alloys. The United States Metals Refining Co., Carteret, N. J. has recently produced OFHC R copper-zirconium alloys for experimentation and evaluation. Because OFHC R copper contains no appreciable oxygen, no harmful oxides are formed and the full benefit of Zr as an alloying addition is obtained. This paper describes the results of this work. It contains room-temperature and some high-temperature data which have been obtained after various processing techniaues. Actual elevated temperature properties are being determined and will be reported in a separate paper. Preliminary results obtained at elevated temperatures suggest that the Cu-Zr alloy is superior to other high conductivity copper-base alloys. WORK PROCEDURE The high-purity oxygen free (OFHC R) copper-zirconium alloys with zirconium content ranging from 0.003 to 0.23 pct were cast into 4-by 4-in. wirebars by both continuous casting and conventional casting methods. Zr was added in the form of a master alloy containing 30 pct Zr and 70 pct Cu. Castings were analyzed for zirconium and nine bars containing various amounts of zirconium were selected for this study. The results of analyses and the sample numbers are given in Table I. Typical analyses of OFHC R copper are also shown. The following properties were studied: A) Solid solubility of zirconium in copper. B) Effect of zirconium on properties of copper. C) Effect of combined working and heat treating on properties of Cu-Zr alloys. The solid solubility of zirconium in copper was determined by metallographic techniques. Specimens for this phase of the investigation were hot rolled at 900oC (1650oF) to 0.250-in. rod. The rolled rods were cut into 2/3-in. long specimens and solution annealed at 950 °C (1740°F), 980°C (1795 °F). and 1020 °C (1870 °F) for 6 hr and quenched in water. MUCH has been written concerning the hoisting equipment of various mines -throughout the country, but most of the literature on the subject, if not all, describes equipment of extraordinary capacity and the small and medium-sized outfits have been neglected. The hoisting equipment here described is capable 'of handling about 1200 tons per day. It has not been worked, to capacity, but 600 to 700 tons, together with men and materials, have been handled in two shifts without any great effort. Only one shaft extends from the surface to the lowest levels of the mine; see Fig. 1. It is composed of three compartments, two of which are used for hoisting and the third for water, air, and electrical lines, and for sinking purposes. In 1909, this shaft was raised from the 1000-ft. (304-m.) level to the 700-ft. There a station was cut and an air hoist installed. At this time all mining operations were confined to the upper levels of the mine; that is; above the 700-ft. The. ore was-dropped to this level through chutes from the 300-, 400-, 500-, and 600-ft. levels and then lowered in cars on cages to the 1000-ft., which is the main haulage adit, the mill and railroad bins being about 3000 ft. from the shaft. Orebodies were, in due time, developed on the 1000-ft. level and below. Therefore, in 1913, the shaft was sunk to the 1150-ft. level and thereafter sinking was continued at regular intervals until the 1500-ft. level was reached. But, hoisting from the 1300-ft. level was a difficult, and slow process with the antiquated air hoist, so, in 1916, it was derided to raise the shaft to the surface and install a modern, electrically operated hoist. This was completed early in 1917 and the hoist was in operation in March of that year.

A full understanding of the behavior of sulphur in the basic open-hearth process has been delayed by lack of dependable data covering a wide range of slag conditions in the absence of other complicating factors that are likely to be present under operating conditions. It has been generally accepted that strongly basic slags will dissolve more sulphur than will those in which the acidic and basic constituents are more nearly balanced. It has been known that both slag and metal would absorb sulphur from the flame when the sulphur content of the fuel is high. It has been generally believed that manganese assists in the transfer of sulphur from metal to slag. Almost nothing has been known of the effect of temperature upon desulphurization;the data have been conflicting and there has been a tendency to depend rather heavily upon analogy with the better understood desulphurizing reaction of the blast furnace. Many attempts have been made to build up from open-hearth data a satisfactory theory of the chemical reactions involved in the process. That this has been an extremely difficult task is owing to two reasons that have been very generally recognized. The first is the parallel and simultaneous reaction of sulphur transfer between flame and bath. The second is the difficulty of distinguishing between the factors that ultimately limit the transfer from metal to slag—i.e., equilibrium conditions—and those whose influence is only upon the rate of transfer. It has been the object of the work here recounted to study the equilibrium distribution of sulphur between slag and metal in the absence of these complicating factors, with the hope that a better understanding of the equilibria involved would lead to a better control of the over-all process in the open-hearth furnace. A review of the literature on steelmaking reveals almost complete agreement with respect to the paramount importance of lime in promoting desulphurization. In expressing this effect in quantitative terms, however, and in formulating the relationships between the concentrations of other slag components and the desulphurizing power, there is little agreement. For instance, the "basicity" or basic strength of the slag is commonly measured by some kind of ratio of concentration of basic to acidic oxides. Of these, the following have been reviewed by Schenck:20 V radio = % CaO/%SiO, Körber and Oelsen's _ % CaO'. 100/% CaO + % SiO2 where (%CaO') = % CaO- 1.18% P2O5. LOW prices have made 1938 a difficult year for the zinc industry of the world. Particularly in the United States, output had to be radically curtailed to bring production into line with consumption. Despite these unfavorable conditions, some additional plant construction is contemplated. In Jugoslavia, through co-operation with the Government, Trepca Mines is lo build a zinc plant to produce 10,000 metric tons annually, the plant to be ready for operation in July, 1941). Cerro de Pasco is proceeding with its plans for an electrolytic plant in Peru. A pilot plant, to be ready next summer, is under construction. In eastern Canada an electrolytic plant is planned in Quebec to treat concentrates from Yoranda and other mines but no defi-

With some difficulty we framed the picture of the village on the mountain getting in the railroad bridge and tunnel at the base. It was a charming scene of red-tile roofs on a green mountain in the golden autumn sunshine with the black hole of the railroad tunnel looking like something out of the movie, "The Train." We clicked the shutter, advanced the film and started back to our rented Audi. At which point there was a hail from the other side of the railroad bridge. A man in uniform was brandishing an object in the air which looked suspiciously like a rifle. We peered around. We were the only other persons in view. He must be yelling at us. He was now closing the distance at a brisk, determined gait but was still 100 yards away. The car was handy but the road was straight, paralleling the railroad tracks for some distance. We dismissed the idea of running for it. Who knows, he might shoot. When he came up we didn't have much of a conversation because it had taken us a week to learn three words of Yugoslavian-zhiveli, long life, huhvalla, thank you, and schlivavitza, the national drink (plum brandy). None of these seemed appropriate. We got the Idea that photographs of railroad tunnels and bridges were prohibited. The guard, for such he seemed to be, took the Audi plate number, administered a last scowling reprimand and stalked off. This incident was the only one in a 15-day visit to Yugoslavia which we would have associated with "Iron Curtain restrictions."

THERE is a large body of evidence'" indicating that solidification during the liquid-solid transition is usually induced by heterogeneities present in the liquid. By dispersing liquid metals into small droplets, the impurities responsible for catalyzing solidification are isolated within a small number of these droplets. The effect of the foreign body therefore is restricted to a single drop by this technique. Thus upon cooling below the melting temperature, solidification is initiated by homogeneous nucleation in the majority of the droplets that do not contain impurities. In the case of solidification of liquid metals, the activation energy for nucleation is so great that its rate changes by orders of magnitude for a change in temperature of only several degrees centigrade.' Effectively homogeneous nucleation occurs at a critical temperature upon continuous cooling. Thus by microscopic observation of single particles during cooling, a temperature at which the rate of homogeneous nucleation becomes sensible can be determined.3 since at the temperatures at which nucleation occurs in the absence of impurities the rate of crystal growth is extremely rapid, the temperature at which the entire particle solidifies is very nearly the temperature at which the nucleation of the solidification occurs. Thus for liquids that freeze at high temperatures the onset of nucleation can be established by simply observing the temperature at which the marked heat evolution and increase in brightness of the particle occur. For liquids that freeze at lower temperatures the onset of nucleation can be determined by a rumpling and change in shape of the particle resulting from its solidification. The microscopic technique for observing the solidification of small particles has already been described." In earlier papers the nucleation of solidification of pure metals 5,6 and of alloy systems7 showing complete liquid and solid solubility have been described. In the present paper, the observations are extended to a simple eutectic system (Pb-Sn) where the possibility of the formation of two solid phases exists. Metals for the investigation were obtained from the American Smelting and Refining Co. in the form of pure lead and pure tin, 99.8 and 99.9 pct purity, respectively. An ingot of each of the pure metals was made into shot by heating the metals at a temperature about 50 °C in excess of the melting point and pouring the liquid slowly into a container of water at 15°C. Samples of the shotted pure metals were weighed out to make alloys containing 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, and 90 atomic pct Pb. Samples of each alloy were then melted in separate beakers. Each melt was poured through a pyrex funnel into a cylindrical mold (% in. ID). The casting solidified in 10 to 20 sec. The inside of the mold as well as the funnel through which the metal was poured were coated with graphite to eliminate adherence of the metal. Analyses were performed on some of the compositions and are given in Table I. The compositions also were checked for these samples and for those that were not analyzed by determining the spread between the liquidus and the solidus upon melting the small metal particles. These measurements agreed as well with the nominal compositions as the analyses listed above. Results The results of the supercooling experiments for the several alloys are summarized in Table II and plotted on the constitution diagram in Fig. 1. Data for the pure lead and pure tin were taken from earlier investigations. The values for the maximum supercooling of the several alloys are the average of several determinations on a number of drops of each alloy. The maximum value in any determination was within about 2 pct of the average. For the alloys containing from 20 to 60 atomic pct Sn, inclusive, two marked changes of the surface structure were observed upon cooling. At the higher temperature, after the first appearance of the solid phase it continued to grow slowly at a constant temperature and then stopped. At the lower temperature the alteration of surface structure was abrupt. For the alloys containing from 70 to 95 atomic pct Sn, inclusive, an abrupt change in surface structure was observed at a single critical temperature.

Yet the two eras themselves were strikingly dissimilar and represented marked differences in the company's activities, corporate structure, and personnel.
