WHILE the attention of all engineering branches is focused today on changes and improvements in the several curricula, we are concerned here with the many questions arising in industry and college concerning the preparation for the petroleum engineering profession. The succession of problems confronting the petroleum engineer demands a degree of versatility not ordinarily encountered in other professions. As a consequence, the student cannot acquire mastery of all the several engineering branches represented in field practice, and as an alternative, he has learned to appreciate the value of thorough training in the basic or fundamental sciences as a preliminary foundation for professional work. While our attention is directed primarily to the training of engineers in educational institutions, it is necessary that the ultimate education of the professional engineer be kept in mind. It is apparent that his success as an engineer is limited not only by his educational and job experience, but by his native endowments: mentality, personality and health. The engineer's lack of job experiences often proves as much a handicap as the lack of adequate college training. If the final product proves to be satisfactory, both industry and technical institutions are to be congratulated. However, if the product is found wanting, the one most responsible should be apprehended. FITNESS FOR PROFESSION For the most part, students of engineering colleges have had their interests in applied science awakened at a relatively early age. Many of them entered college as a convenient means of acquiring a technical education, but undoubtedly would have had better prospects in a shorter program offered by institutions of noncollege grade. The activating motive of practical interest is also strong in students suitable for college training, but in many cases an intellectual interest must be awakened in order that it may survive graduation. Numerous engineers believe that this progressive process of selection and determination of career aims is one of the essential services rendered by the engineering colleges. Industrialists, who are more interested in quality than quantity of petroleum engineering graduates, have pointed out the good that should result if more emphasis were given to the work of eliminating the misfits. They also point out the protective measures that have been taken by other professions for the betterment of professional standards. Mention has been made of the beneficial results to be obtained by collective determination of the market for the products of engineering schools, particularly in that the students unsuited to the profession would have an opportunity to prepare themselves for employment more suited to their personalities and other qualifications. In this paper, major attention is given to misfires in mines where electric multiple shot-firing is the system used. Misfires are sometimes caused by one action or condition and at other times by a combination of two or more. They may be divided into two classes: (1) those caused by workers in the mines, (2) mechanical or manufacturer's causes. The second cause will be discussed first. Misfires Caused by Faulty Detonators The important part of an electric blasting cap, to the user where multiple shot-firing is done, as in the steep-pitch, thiek-vein, anthracite mines, is the bridge wire. In single shot-firing this factor is not apparent, but in mines where multiple firing is done any variation in the resistance of the bridge wire, where full or even rated battery capacity is required, will most likely cause a misfire. The reason for this is obvious. If the resistance in the bridge wires is not the same, some of the detonators will fire because of their greater comparative resistance. Variance in resistance of bridge wires is caused by a slight difference in the diameter of the bridge wire, also by a difference in the composition of the bridge wires. Again, where the bridge wires have become rusted, there will be a variance in resistance. About the year 1922, one of the large coal companies was greatly alarmed by the number of serious and fatal accidents caused by misfires. The general manager issued an order that these accidents must be greatly reduced, and if possible, entirely prevented. The officials at the mines had to determine the various causes of misfires and have them corrected. The rock contractors who use large quantities of 60 to 80 per cent. explosives and do all firing electrically were thoroughly instructed as to the proper methods of doing their work, and closer supervision was given to their work. The manufacturer's representatives stressed the importance of the use of galvanometers; accordingly these were purchased and used. Larger firing lines were installed under the supervision of a demonstrator of the company manufacturing the caps and explosives. However, misfires again occurred and it was evident that the source of the trouble was not wholly

Development of a continuous drill-and-blast excavation capability in mining and high-speed tunneling has been a long recognized goal. Ideally, a machine to meet the challenge should simultaneously perform drilling, explosive loading, initiation, mucking, ventilation, and other functions while remaining at the face, since the elimination or modification of the cyclic nature of the system would significantly improve the advance rate and economy of drill-and-blast tunneling. The Rapidex continuous spiral drill-and-blast concept, one of the continuous excavation schemes presently under evaluation in the US Bureau of Mines' Bedded Deposits subprogram, utilizes an unusual blasting pattern that provides effective fragmentation and involves a partially self-shielding geometry that permits a lightly shielded machine to remain at the face during blasting.

The Kinta valley, in the State of Perak, one of the largest of the Federated Malay States, is probably at the present time the richest alluvial tin-district in the world, Perak producing from 20,000 to 25,000 tons of tin annually, and the Kinta valley being the chief producer. The valley runs approximately north and south, and is 30 miles long by 12 wide. It is very flat, the mountain-ranges on either side rising abruptly from the plain, that on the east being the great Central range of the peninsula, and that on the west a subsidiary range marked " Kledang " on the map, Fig. 1. The valley is drained by the Kinta river, which rises in the eastern mountain range and flows south to join the Perak river, being joined by numerous streams from both mountain-ranges.

In airborne gravity surveys effects of acceleration and irregular movements of the aircraft must be balanced out or overcome. The gradient of vertical gravity is recorded, therefore, by using two masses instead of one. As the amplitude variations are infinitesimal and difficult to measure accurately, at of gradient during flight is positive or negative. The positive portions of the pattern can then be indicated and contoured. Even with these simplifications, the source of energy must be exceptionally stable. General Principles: In the conventional gravimeter the weight of a standard mass is determined at a number of selected points within the survey area. In most systems weight is determined by comparing the gravity pull with extension or torque produced in a wire spring. The instruments employed are sensitive to the slightest movement; they cannot be used on a moving platform unless velocity is kept strictly uniform.

The formation volume and the relative volume of the liquid Phase of mixtures of Condensate and gas from five different parts of a field in the Louisiana area have been established experimentally. These studies included gas-condensate ratios as high as 25.000 cu ft/bbl at pressures up to 5,000 psi. The gravities of the tank condensates were between 53.9° and 63.9° API. The compositions of the condensate and gas samples inves-ligated are presented in tabular form. The formation volume. the relative volume of the liquid phase. and the specific volume of the mixtures are available. A rough correlation of the formation volume as a function of pressure. temperature, and gas-condensate ratio has been presented. This correlation i-considered applicable only to the range of conditions covered in this investigation for systems of similar nature and com-position. INTRODUCTION Often a knowledge of the influence of temperature. Pres sure, and relative quantities of condensate and gas upon the volumetric behavior of fluid*. from a given field has been employed in estimating the Conditions existing in the reservoir. The early work of Beecher and Parkhurst' and the more rrcent Studies of the Dominguez' and San Joaqnin Valley Field;: are examples of experimental studies of this character. Correlation of the volumetric behavior of naturally occurring hydrocarbon mixtures has Proved To be feasible' . at low gas-conden-sate ratios-; for fluids*. from a single geographic area. Progres 5 is being made in the Prediction of the volumetric behavior of distillate systems at high gas-condensate ratios and pressure.. However. the estimation of the retrograde". ' dew-point pressure still remains uncertain and probably can best be established by experiment. For this reason it appears of interest to make available experimental information about the volumetric behavior of mixtures of condensate and gas from five different part.; of a single field. This material shows a rough similarity to data for mixtures of condensate and gas from San Joaqnin ' Valley Fields. In the present paper. 110 attempt has been made to coordinate the available information on tbe volumetric behavior of fluids from condensate fields. It appears hopeful that progress can be realized by the utilization of recently developed equa-tions of state.!' However. the primary problem in any such correlation is the proper identification of the components and constituents of naturally occuring systems. Additional experimental information may be required to permit the determination of the values of the constants of the equation of state for References given at end of paper. A method and apparatus for measuring gas porosities of rocks are described. The apparatus can be assembled from commercially available components. In principle, measurements are made by volume substitution at constant pressure. The maximum error is not more than 0.3 porosity per cent. Typical results are given. INTRODUCTION Determining the porosity of rock samples is one of the most important and yet most varied types of measurement in core analysis. Among the many techniques devised are the so-called "gas porosity" methods. An old and well known example is the Washburn-Bunting method.' The U. S. Bureau of Mines2-' described and later improved the apparatus for a now widely used method generally known as the "Boyle's law" method. In the present form of the Washburn-Bunting method,' the volume of air in the pores of a rock sample at atmospheric pressure is extracted and then collected in a graduated burette at atmospheric pressure. The volume of air is read directly as the pore volume of the sample. The absolute error in reading the collected volume of gas is independent of the total volume; thus, the relative error is larger when the volume is small, as it is for rocks of low porosity. In addition, the sample after measurement contains mercury, which limits its use for other analyses. The Bureau of Mines (or Boyle's law) method measures directly the solids volume of a sample from which the pore volume and porosity are derived, using a separate measurement of the bulk volume. Gas at a few atmospheres pressure is introduced into a sample chamber of known volume containing the rock sample. The pressure is accurately measured. Following, the gas is expanded into a burette at 1 atm, and the gas volume is read directly. From the initial pressure p, and the final pressure p2 and volume v,, the initial gas volume v1 is calculated using Boyle's law; that is, p1v1 = p2v2. Volume v, minus the volume of the empty sample chamber is the solids volume of the sample. The accuracy of the method is limited, unless corrections are made, by deviations of the gas from the "ideal" gas-law behavior assumed in the simple form of Boyle's law. The purpose of the present paper is to describe a method for measuring the gas porosity of a rock which avoids many of these difficulties. Gas volumes are measured directly with the same accuracy as the bulk volumes. Pressures of at least an order of magnitude larger than those of previous methods are employed to insure rapid penetration of the gas into the sample. While special equipment may be built to apply the method, the porosimeter may be constructed as well from commercially available components. For simplicity, the apparatus described will be referred to as the "Constant-Pressure gas porosimeter". THE CONSTANT-PRESSURE METHOD Fig. 1 shows schematically the arrangement of components comprising the present Constant-Pressure porosimeter. Briefly, the method is one of volume substitution and may be considered a null measurement. Omitting (for the present) some of the operational details, the method of measurement consists of the following three steps. 1. After evacuation, the volume of the measuring system (a ballast chamber, a manifold, two gauges and their connections) up to the sample chamber is filled with gas to a high pressure (- 1,000 psi). A sample of the gas at this pressure is trapped in one side of a sensitive differential pressure gauge to serve as the reference pressure for subsequent steps. 2. The evacuated sample chamber containing the rock sample is opened to the measuring system. As the gas expands into the chamber, the resulting decrease in pressure unbalances the differential pressure gauge. 3. The pressure is restored by means of a mercury volumetric pump. The volume of mercury injected exactly equals the free or void volume of the sample chamber (volume of empty chamber minus the solids volume of the rock within). From the injected volume and the known empty chamber volume, the solids volume is obtained and the porosity calculated. The pressure and the volume occupied by the gas are the same before and after opening the sample chamber. Expansion and compression of the gas are incidental operations and do not enter into the calculation of porosity. By the pressure balancing or nulling, the free volume of the sample chamber is merely substituted by an equal and measured volume of mercury. Since the measurements are at constant pressure, there are no compressibility corrections necessary for the sample chamber.

The outstanding features of the Coloinbian situation for the year 1929 were legal and political. The passage of Law 84 and the promulgation of the Regulatory Decree 150 were recounted in the review for 1928, as was also the Presidential proclamation suspending this law and its accompanying decree until decision could be reached in the suits filed against them before the Supreme Court and the Council of State. Early this year the Minister of Industries, Jose Antonio Montalvo, announced the appointment of a commission of foreign experts to aid in drafting a new petroleum law. He requested all of the foreign experts employed not to consult with the oil company representatives in Bogota, and these experts were therefore shut off from receiving any suggestions from those who had actually operated in the country and knew the conditions under which operations would take place. It was to be expected that the provisions of a law suggested under such circumstances would not meet operating conditions satisfactorily. The specific objections are stated in O'Shaughnessy's South American Oil Reports (April, 1929). An especially qualified commentator observes that one of the curious provisions of the proposed law was the high royalty on gas—5c. per 1000 cu. ft. of gas produced. There was also a provision requiring 20 per cent. of the stock of the company operating in Colombia to be offered for sale to Colombians. The bill failed to pass Congress in the closing hours of the session. The Supreme Court, in the meantime, handed down its decision on Law 84 of the previous year and Regulation 150 covering the enforcement of that law. Contrary to expectation, the majority opinion of the Court practically affirmed the constitutionality of both the law and the regulatory decree, with the exception of Article 20 and parts of Article 21 of the decree which referred specifically to the registration of private properties. At the time the suit was filed against Law 84 and Decree 150 the operation of these measures was suspended by the Executive. Law 84 and its Regulatory Decree 150 still remain suspended as the Council of State has not yet brought in a decision upon the questions raised in the suits instituted by the various companies against the law and decree, and at the moment of this writing it appears unlikely that such a decision will be reached by that body.

ALTHOUGH the iron-carbon diagram has undergone many changes in the last 20 years, the region below the eutectoid line and up to approxi-mately 1.7 per cent carbon has been little affected. This region is generally considered to consist of cementite and ferrite. Graphite has been noted occasionally in the hypereutectoid steel region, and the ready formation of graphite nodules in malleable cast iron is a phenomenon difficult to interpret in the light of cementite, supposedly stable at sub-eutectoid temperatures. In this case the graphite formation has been partly explained by the presence of silicon, and many have believed that silicon acts to change the stable state rather than to accelerate reactions so as to arrive at the stable state in a briefer period of time. Consider-ation of this phenomenon indicates that cementite is not the stable phase in the temperature composition zone referred to. In the course of examining a low-carbon steel tube taken from a petroleum cracking still, which had been in service for approximately three years at temperatures somewhat below the eutectoid temperature, observations were made that shed light on this entire subject. The tube in question analyzed:1 C, 0.15 per cent; Mn, 0.49; Si, 0.02; S, 0.023; P, 0.015. The microstructure of the tube after service is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. From these it is evident that cementite as such is absent, and that in its place nodular graphite has been formed. In order to check this observation further, samples taken from the tube were heated at 850° C. for varying periods of time. Pittsburg and Midway Coal Co. has modified the German Pott-Broche process, on which patents date back to 1927, to produce on a bench scale liquid products by solution hydrogenation of coal. A continuing program of lignite solution-hydro gena-tion experiments is directed toward investigating coal solution reactions, determining favorable conditions for the solution refining of lignite by the Pott-Broche process, and investigating some of the uses for the de-ashed product obtained from lignite The German Pott-Broche process1" on which patents date back to 1927, has been modified by the Pittsburg and Midway Coal Co., a Gulf Oil subsidiary, to produce on a bench scale liquid products by solution -hydrogena-tion of coal." The objectives of the present effort are to investigate coal solution reactions, to determine favorable conditions for the solution refining of lignite by the Pott-Broche process, and to investigate some of the uses for the de-ashed product obtained from lignite. This paper is a summary of results to date in a continuing program of lignite solution-hydrogenation experiments. The coal solution reaction program has several principal aims. The first of these is to determine whether lignite can be successfully dissolved in solvents that might be practical for commercial development. The second object is to determine whether the solvents function after successive cycles of use, recovery, and reuse. It seems necessary to the economics of a potential commercial process that the solvent be recycled. Third, it is desired to learn something about the distribution of the ash constituents between cake and filtrate. The extent of ash removal is important. The nature and quantity of mineral matter passing through the filter may determine end-use marketability. For certain use applications, trace quantities of certain minerals can be objectionable, e.g., titanium and vanadium must be very low in electrode carbon for aluminum production. The Solution Reaction The coal solution Process involves an extremely complex system of chemical reactions. An initial solvent such as anthracene oil is a mixture of hundreds of different compounds with a boiling range of roughly 500" to 750°F at atmospheric pressure. The coal macro-molecule is broken down by thermal decomposition and solvent action into myriads of different compounds, some the same as those comprising the solvent. This similarity in structures opens up the possibility of production and subsequent recovery of solvent. Some solvent is inevitably lost by reaction. Regeneration of solvent was not a problem in the early German Pott-Broche plant. The coal refinery was an integral part of a petroleum refinery complex and replacement solvent was readily available. A coal refinery using lignite, however, might be isolated from other hydrocarbon processing facilities and the regenerability of solvent could be vital to the economic success of the venture. Several structural features of the solvent molecules have been cited as important to the coal solution process.'. The first of these is aromaticity of the material, the second, ability to transfer hydrogen to another molecule, as for example the ability of tetralin to transfer hydrogen and be converted to naphthalene. Finally, the presence of hydroxyl groups on aromatic rings within the molecule, i.e., phenolic character, seems beneficial. Mixtures of pure compounds have been tried by various investigators. Mixtures of o-cresol, a phenolic substance, and tetralin were found to dissolve bituminous coal better than either substance alone.3 This maximum solubility was not found with lignite." Hydrogen contributes to the reaction by hydro-genolysis and by combining with free radicals and molecular "loose ends" to stabilize the compounds formed in coal depolymerization. High boiling point, and correspondingly high molecular weight, seems to be a property which improves solution potential for coal with a given type of compound.' The maceral components of the coal appear to have an important bearing on its ease of solution. The fusain portion is quite inert to solvent action, but the an-thraxylon material dissolves quite readily.3 The hydrogenation reaction can be improved by the use of a catalyst; commercial hydrogenation catalysts having been found effective. Although cost is involved in the use of catalyst and catalyst recovery, the resulting saving in time and perhaps lowered temperature or pressure might justify their use in the solution refining process and decrease the total process costs. Apparatus and Procedure The coal solution runs were made in a 1-gal stainless steel stirred autoclave. The autoclave was provided with thermocouple wells and a transducer to permit continuous recording of temperature and pressure. The autoclave stirrer was magnetically driven, eliminating the leakage inherent with a rotating pressure seal. For runs in which a catalyst was used, the catalyst in the form of beads was placed in a wire mesh container mounted on the stirrer shaft. A control system programmed the heatup and reaction cycle. The permissible heating rate was 5°F per min because of the need to minimize thermal stress in the autoclave body. The temperature was raised at that rate until the reaction temperature was attained and then the temperature was held constant for the desired length of time. The maximum temperature seldom exceeded the average run temperature by more than 15°F.

Crushed stone leads all industrial mineral, except cement in annual value of production in the United States. It is also interesting to note that crushed stone value is exceeded only by that of fuels, cement, and iron ore among all mineral products of this country. An industry which started with hand-sledging to produce smaller sizes of broken stone for hard surfaced improvement of roadways as designed by McAdam in England about 1815 has grown into a complex industrial giant. Most of this growth started with the invention of a mechanical rock crusher just under one hundred years age (1858) by Eli Whitney Blake. This invention made possible the production of greater tonnages of smaller sizes of broken stone and greatly accelerated its use for Macadam road pavements and for railroad ballast. Stones Used for Crushing All three of the major geologic classifications of stone, sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic, are widely used in the production of crushed stone. Satisfactory physical and chemical properties can be found in each type so that economic availability becomes the prime determinant for development. Table 1 lists more common rocks of the three main groups with average values of specific gravity and toughness as measured by Deval test. This widely used classification was suggested by C. E. Lord, of U. S. Bureau of Public Roads. The physical properties were compiled by D. O. Woolf in "The Results of Physical Tests of Road Building Rock," U. S. Department of Agriculture, Bulletin 76. It should be noted that the figures given in Table 1 are averages. Very substantial variations in the physical properties of rocks within any one classification will occur. The solid surface of the earth was first made up of igneous rocks resulting from the solidification or crystallization of molten material upon cooling. These igneous rocks were disintegrated into sand, clay, and gravel by the weathering action of wind, water, chemicals, [ ] and temperature changes. The products of weathering were transported by wind and streams until they reached less turbulent areas such as oceans or lakes and were deposited. The microstructural stability of 59 carbon and low alloy steels after 34,000 hr exposure at 900' and 1050°F, including the weld heat-affected zone, is discussed. The tensile and creep rupture properties of the parent metal of many of the steels before and after 10,000 hr exposure are presented. SEAMLESS pipe has been used for many years at elevated temperatures. When seamless first began to be used, operating temperatures and pressures were relatively low and the steel produced adequately met the existing requirements. The need for knowledge of creep properties and graphitiza-tion was nonexistent. Today the requirements for tubular products have changed considerably. Operating temperatures and pressures are increasing continually and corrosion, particularly at high temperatures, presents a problem. Carbon steels have, under these conditions, certain economic advantages particularly in oil refinery use. However, the use of low alloy steels in the generation of steam power has increased appreciably due to the influence of molybdenum on creep strength and the control of graphitization with chromium. The behavior of carbon and certain low alloy steels after long periods of exposure at 900° and 1050°F (480° and 565°C) has been investigated. The steels were examined before and after 10,000 to 34,000 hr exposure. Results obtained with material exposed at 1200°F (650°C) are not presented due to the severe oxidation and resulting decarburiza-tion after long periods of exposure. The graphitization characteristics of carbon and low alloy steels are of fundamental concern to the users of these materials. This is particularly true where welded joints are employed. In order to evaluate properly the behavior of steels at elevated temperatures, it is desirable to employ not only long periods of exposure under controlled conditions, but to use material with known properties and steelmaking practices. The purpose of this investigation has been to study the microstructure of the weld and the tensile and creep rupture properties of the parent metal after long periods of exposure at elevated temperatures. In the report'.' of a previous investigation data were presented on the microstructure, impact strength, hardness, and oxidation characteristics after 10,000 hr exposure at elevated temperatures. When this investigation was planned, methods for controlling the graphitization characteristics of steel were not established and, therefore, a number of special alloy steels were included in the study. During the exposure of these steels, the influence of aluminum in accelerating the rate of graphitization and the inhibiting power of chromium were established by various investigators. Also, the vanadium-bearing steels, because of their outstanding creep properties, received attention. As a result of these developments, considerable progress has been made in the field of high temperature tubular products, and the necessity for special alloys to prevent graph-itization has been restricted largely to the use of chromium. Material Chemical analysis, deoxidation treatment, and austenitic grain size of the 59 steels discussed in this paper are shown in Table I. The steels were forged to 1x1 in. bars with the exception of steels 12B, 12DX, 12DY, 12DZ, 70, 70A, 72 to 78, 82, and 83 which were machined from heavy wall pipe. All bars were surface ground before exposure. Heat treatment before exposure is shown in Table 11. In high-volume mining operations, preventive maintenance programs that include standardized replacement wear parts can boost equipment availability and lower unit costs. Meeting the daily production targets depends heavily on keeping equipment working as close to full time as possible. This is the case at one medium-sized western surface coal operation producing approximately 2.7 million t/y (3 million stpy). The mine, located in western Wyoming, removes in excess of 8 million m3 (10.5 million cu yd) of highly abrasive overburden each year. According to the mine superintendent, "Abrasion at this mine is some of the worst I've ever seen. Shovel points can wear out in little more than one shift. Dozer blades some- times last two weeks, but can wear out sooner. And ripper points really take a beating. If we can replace this fast-wearing iron with small pieces that go on quickly, we think that's the way to go."
