Calculations are reported on the differential sensitivity of the updip invasion of oil strata of varving permeability to the driving pressure differential. It is assumed that the water-oil interfaces advance with sharp fronts, or that the microscopic displacement efficiency is independent of rate and capillary pressure effects. It is found that, under such conditions, limitations of withdrawal rates will not greatly inhibit the "fingering" and bypassing tendency through high permeability strata unless the differential fluid head across the original oil column is of the order of or exceeds about 80 per cent of the driving pressure differential. In practice, such restrictions will be feasible only for oil reservoirs and aquifers of high permeability and dip, but may develop automatically under combined gas injection and water drive operations. INTRODUCTION A commonly expressed view regarding the intrusion of edge-waters into oil producing formations is that the geometry of such advance is rate sensitive. Specifically, it has been suggested that high rates of advance, stimulated by rapid withdrawals, will lead to "fingering" and an irregular type of invasion, whereas at low withdrawal rates the water encroachment will be more uniform. Two factors tend to support this view. One is the resultant effect of capillary pressure and gravity gradients in the displacement processes' involved in water intrusion, which are magnified at low rates of flow so as to improve the recovery efficiency. The other is the direct retarding effect of the rising water head as it advances upslope into the producing area. Capillary pressure forces give rise to a rate sensitivity of the oil recovery by water displacement in uniform strata as well as differential effects in non-uniform formations. These are basically independent of the effect of gravity and would also occur in horizontal beds or when the oil and water have the same density. Unfortunately, however, the fundamental equation describing the displacement process under the action of capillary pressures can be solved only by numerical or graphical procedures, and moreover the solutions are sensitive to the character of the capillary pressure and relative permeability curves.* On the other hand, the direct effect of gravity can be given a formal analytical solution if the simplifying assumption is introduced that the water advances with sharp fronts in the individual uniform strata. It depends on the absolute permeabilities of the water invaded zones and hence results in a rate sensitivity of the differential invasion in stratified media. Although a tieatment of this factor alone will not give a complete evaluation of the effect of rate on water intrusion in non-uniform pays, it should provide at least a semiquantitative measure of the sensitivity of "fingering" to withdrawal rate. Such a treatment will be presented in the following sections. GENERAL THEORY The basic element of the theory is the history of water advance updip in a uniform stratum (Fig. 1). THE beginning of the war and the events leading up to it precipitated a near crisis in the aluminum industry. Demands for the metal reached proportions far beyond the prewar production capacities and, in addition, the submarine menace seriously curtailed the importation of bauxite from South America, hitherto a chief source of high-grade ore. The situation required an intensive search for domestic ore to augment the reserves and in October 1941 Congress directed the Department of the Interior to investigate the extent, mode of occurrence, and quality of bauxite in the United States. In December of that year the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey began the search for bauxite in Arkansas, where more than 90 per cent of the domestic ore had been produced and where the greatest amount of bauxite was known to occur. The program involves the geophysical and geological investigation of the Arkansas bauxite region and the core drilling of areas considered favorable for the occurrence of bauxite deposits. Cores taken from the bauxite-kaolin zone are sampled and analyzed in the Bureau of Mines laboratory in Little Rock. The information from each of the deposits discovered is then assembled, the bauxite is graded with respect to its possible utility, tonnage estimates are made, and the whole is presented in the form of a war minerals report. Thirty-eight new bauxite deposits had been discovered and investigated at the end of the calendar year 1944, and the presence of several others had been indicated by the drilling. More than 5000 holes had been drilled throughout the bauxite region, and more than 60,000 chemical analyses had been made of samples taken from the bauxite-kaolin zone. A study of the chemical analyses led to certain general conclusions not only with regard to the chemical composition of Arkansas bauxite, but also with regard to its component minerals. Charts and diagrams based on these conclusions have been developed for practical use by the Bureau of Mines: (I) to serve as a check against laboratory analyses, (2) to present tonnage estimates of ore bodies based on mineral composition, (3) to illustrate the relationship of tonnages of bauxite to the alumina, silica, and iron content, and (4) to serve as a control for mining operations by providing a means for quick estimates of the value of the ore from a partial analysis of its chemical constituents. The use of charts and diagrams similar to those discussed in this paper is not new. The use of the trilinear diagram for studying the ultimate analyses of coals as originally proposed by Ralston in Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 93 (1915) showed that the various ranks of coal fell in different areas on the diagram and that volatile matter, calorific value and other properties could also be plotted by the use of contours. Montreal, April 6-7. "Resilient" and "bullish" were the terms used by R. D. Mushlitz of Asarco and K. C. Hendrick of Noranda Sales Corp. respectively, to describe the near term prospects for lead and zinc. The two men delivered their predictions at a joint meeting of the Lead Industries Association and the Zinc Institute held here. In speaking before a packed audience, Mushlitz insisted that "the lead industry is far from the sedentary one which many would have us believe, and although it may be slow and tortuous at times, . . . it is a viable and progressive industry which won't give up easily to the various pressures. . . . and, in the long run, will prevail."

Henry M. Parks, director of the Oregon. Bureau of Mines and Geology, has supplied the following information regarding a recent discovery .of manganese ore in Jefferson County, Oregon, about seventeen miles southeast of the railroad at Eagle Point, a station on the P. & E. Railway. The occurrence is about five miles southeast of Lake Creek Post Office and near the confluence of Lost Creek with the south fork of Little Butte Creek. The manganese ore occurs as psilomelane and pyrolusite, disseminated through a flat bed of volcanic tuff breccia; at a point where the bed was penetrated by a churn drill hole, the thickness of the ore-bearing stratum was 30 ft. Development thus far has consisted of open-cuts, one of which exposes a face about 40 ft. high and 75 ft. broad. Other smaller open-cuts have followed the bed for a. distance of 400 yards. The nodules of manganese mineral vary from a maximum of 25 to 50, lb. down to the size of beans and others as small as mustard seed. These grains, when clean, average from 55 to 58 per cent. manganese. A 12-ft. groove sample in the face of the main open-cut yielded 14.86 per cent. manganese. The peculiar occurrence of the manganese nodules should present but slight difficulty in concentration. The relationship between the electromotive force (E.M.F.) across a shale barrier and the concentrations of sodium chloride solutions on either side has been investigated. It is shown that the action of a shale barrier is analogous to a glass membrane separating two acid solutions of different hydrogen ion concentrations. The shale behaves as a sodium electrode and is responsive to the activities of the sodium ions in the two solutions in such a way that the potential can be calculated by means of the Nernst equation. This conclusion is confirmed by laboratory experiments. In a borehole the total E.M.F. of a shale cell is the algebraic sum of the ~otential across the shale and a boundary potential. The relationship between total E.M.F. and the resistivity ratio of two sodium chloride solutions is indicated for a number of formation temperatures. The E.M.F. thus predicted is then compared with the .elf potential read from an electric log and good agreement is demonstrated. Based on both the self potential and resistivity curves of the electrical log. a method is given for calculating connate water content in a bed having in-tergranular porosity and containing both connate water and hydrocarbons. INTRODUCTION The first paper on electrical well logging by C. and M. Schlumberger and E. G. Leonardon in 1934' attributed the self potential curve principally to streaming potentials, i.e. to electroki-netic effects. Almost immediately great difficulties were encountered in reconciling many of the curves they obtained with this interpretation. and a ~econd paper' by the same authors soon appeared. In this second paper self potentials were attributed to the combined effects of streaming potentials and electrochemical potentials, the electrochemical potential being considered the result mainly of the interaction of fluids of differing salt concentrations, i.e. a boundary potential, and partly of potentials set up at the faces of impermeable materials. Some experiments involving a gray clay for the impermeable material were quated. The Schlumbergers and Leonardon deduced from the equation for a simple boundary ~otential that the electrochemical potential, as opposed to the electrokinetic potential, could be expressed in the form E=Klog- .......1 pe where K is a constant, pm the mud resistivity. p, the resistivity of the connate water in a porous bed. However, no general expression for the constant K was obtained. Although the literature between 1934 and 1943 contains a number of quotations of their results, the valuable work of the Schlumbergers and Leonardon was not extended so that the electrochemical potential has been generally attributed wholly to boundary potentials between the mud in the borehole and the connate waters in porous formations. Unfortunately, however, the fundamental premise of all these papers, that a boundary potential can give rise to current flow in a borehole, is thermodynamically untenable. As will be shown. the fact that the electrochemical potential can be fairly accurately express as E = K log pm/pc, a form in which a boundary potential may also be written, is partly fortuitous. The boundary potential is indeed an integral part of the expression for the electrochemical potential in a horehole, but in magnitude it represents only about 20% of the total potential. In 1943 an important step in the elucidation of electrochemical potentials was made by Mounce and Rust3 who showed that if a wall of shale separated two compartments which contained saline solutions of different concentrations, and if the two solutions were themselves brought into contact in the pores of a porous inert membrane (such as unglazed porcelain) a current flowed through the shale and saline solutions. The direction of positive current was from the shale into the more dilute solution. The paper of Mounce and Rust, while repeating some of the observations of the Schlumbergers and Leonardon, seems to be the first to show that the shale was the seat of a genuine electrochemical effect capable of causing current flow. In the same paper Mounce and Rust pointed out the similarity between the fundamental conditions of their experiment and the conditions which existed when a bed of shale in the ground was simultaneously in contact with a porous sand containing saline connate water and mud fluid of salinity different from that of the water in the sand. Since it is now generally recognized that the S.P. curve measures ohmic potential changes in the mud fluid in the well bore resulting from changes in current flow, it is apparent that currents having their origin in the electrochemical interaction of mud filtrate and connate waters with shale beds are a very important portion of the total S.P. The work of Mounce and Rusta and others appears to indicate that, in general, the electrochemical portion of a particular kick on a S.P. curve far exceeds any electrokinetic potentials resulting either from streaming potentials or Dorn effects. The Dorn effect, or sedimentation potential. arises when small particles are allowed to fall through certain fluids under the influence of gravity. a difference of potential being observe? between two electrodes placed at different levels in the stream of falling particles. THE year 1874 marks a decided advance in the metallurgy of the West, in two directions. On the one hand, the technical management has been very materially improved, and on the other, the production has been largely increased over that of the previous year. The technical improvements of greatest importance are the introduction of condensation-chambers, or flues, at several works, and the further treatment of the lead matte produced in the ore smelting. These two are of general importance, and although by no means introduced at the majority of works, their adoption at the few where their great importance has begun to be understood will no doubt bring about their universal introduction. To these may be added a third step. forward, which for some localities is vital enough, though for others it must still remain doubtful whether it is to be regarded as an improvement or not. IT is the object of this paper to oppose unnecessary changes, and the introduction of new and confusing terms. From the earliest times of which we have any record on the subject, iron has been divided into general classes. Whether iron was first known in the form of wrought iron or of steel, is a matter of no importance; but at the time when cast iron first became a prominent article of commerce, wrought iron and steel were old products¬steel, at that time, being generally made from wrought iron by the process of cementation. As steel was then properly defined as iron containing more carbon than wrought iron, so cast iron was appropriately defined as iron containing more carbon than steel. Until the year 1776, when Huntsman first began the manufacture of a new kind of iron by melting wrought iron and steel in crucibles, the above definitions were all that could be desired. At first, probably, owing to imperfect appliances, only a highly carburized iron was melted in crucibles, and this led to its being called cast steel. If our ancestors had found a name for this material not involving the use of the word steel, we would have been saved the trouble of the present discussion. As the arts developed, new uses were found for steel, and the products of the crucible were varied, until at the present day it is quite common to find steel containing no more carbon than average wrought iron, and other steel containing nearly or quite as much carbon as some cast iron. All of these various products of the crucible have retained, or received, the name cast steel, usually abbreviated to the simple word steel, without causing any confusion among producers or consumers in regard to terms or their meaning. In 1855, twenty-one years ago, the Bessemer process was introduced ; this was followed in a few years by the Siemens-Martin process, and the products of both were at once, and have ever since been, called steel, from the fact that they were identical in chemical and physical properties with crucible cast steel. At the present time, then, we have three subdivisions of cast steel, viz.: Crucible cast steel, Bessemer cast steel, and Siemens-Martin,

Possibly a word explaining the phenomenon more in detail may not be amiss. In the act of solidification each drop as it starts to solidify splits up into a half drop poorer in carbon and another half drop richer in carbon than the drop itself. The half drop poorer in carbon solidifies and attaches itself to-the already solid walls, whereas the half drop richer in carbon remains molten for the excellent reason that it is richer and hence is more fusible than the original drop, and hence in turn is wholly fusible at the existing temperature. Under usual conditions, as when the steel solidifies in a mold of any form, the successive molten half drops thus enriched in carbon remain present and by their enrichment progressively raise the carbon con-tent of the remaining molten mass, out of which successive half drops are continuously solidifying and attaching themselves to the already solid walls. TULSA SECTION At the smoker concluding the two day meeting of the Tulsa section of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, Tulsa, Okla., Feb. 26, 1919, Dr. Willis T. Lee, the new head of the Geological Department of the University of Oklahoma, was introduced to the assembled geologists and mining engineers. Dr. Lee requested that the geologists and engineers who were making a specialty of petroleum geology assist him in giving a good course in practical oil geology in the Geological Department of the University. After a motion offering the services of all present in giving lectures on their special subjects had been adopted, Dr. Perrine of Hutchinson, Kans., named the geologists who were pledged to give lectures in Dr. Lee's course. The students in geology at Norman are assured of the latest information regarding practical work in petroleum geology and will have the inspiration derived from contact with men who are actually at work upon the problems which they are studying. Dr. Lee and President Brooks of the University are to be congratulated upon the introduction of this .method of instruction. The plan thus put into operation is similar to the graduate system of coaching in athletics followed at many of the large universities; what is good for instruction in athletics should also prove good for instruction in applied geology.

A tremendous volume of the metal rolled annually into sheets strips and coil stock finds its way to a host of stamping and manufacturing plants which are the quantity production units of the country. Considerable in volume, too, are the rolled and extruded rods which go into forging and manufacturing plants for conversion into the same general line: those widely sold metallic necessities and luxuries of the household, the office, transportation, farming and building construction. Yet, in spite of its age and its importance, the stamping trade has been doing its "engineering" largely by trial and error. Its distinctive method is shearing out and plastically working metal to finished shape in a few quick strokes with high loads and expensive tools which are warranted only by large quantities to be produced. The principal operations have many features In common with rolling and wire-drawing methods. Combinations of stresses are diffcrent, however, and details of operations are infinite in variety. An engineering study of the subject begins with stress analysis, but must go back to metallurgy for its foundation. A grouping of pressed-metal working operations according to whether the metal is (1) sheared, (2) bent, (3) drawn or (4) squeezed has proved useful. All of these groups include instances of both hot and cold operations. For discussions of metal working properties, the division between hot and cold working is taken as the recrystallization range of temperature. This, of course, brings tin, lead and often zinc into the hot-work range at or near room temperature. The outstanding hot-working press field is in forging: particularly of brass; all of which is included in the squeezing group. Shearing Operations The shearing group of operations, including blanking, piercing, trimming, shaving, slitting, shearing, notching, parting and numerous variations and combinations of these enters once or more into the production schedule of practically every stamped or forged article. Coal preparation practice and trends follow, among other factors, production trends in any given area. Considering an area the size of a state, some broad predictions may be made after a review of the annual production records. As this paper is concerned with coal cleaning in Utah, data on its production record are pertinent. Table 1 shows the percentage relation of coal production in Utah to the national total as a single figure up to 1935 which includes all recorded production. From 1935 through 1947 these data are presented by years. It is evident from these data that the production of Utah coal is ascending. The reason for this trend is industrial growth in the West resulting in a population shift which accounts for more people than the normal increase would supply together with Utah's relatively fortunate geographical location and its abundance of good-quality coal. Utah is also hopeful of supplying more coal in the future for West Coast power generation.I Utah is not unique among coal-producing states in anticipating greater production in the future. Coal Age states, " . . . it is now evident that a billion-ton yearly production of anthracite and bituminous by 1960 is not impossible." At present it is about 610,000,000 tons, the all-time high in 1947 was approximately 687,803,000 tons. In view of the trend outlined above, obviously more new mines will be required to produce the necessary tonnage. These in turn will require more mechanical cleaning capacity. Whether the required new plants will be built by present operators of mines and mechanical cleaning plants or by others now in the business of producing coal or expecting to enter it is of no consequence in this discussion. The fact is— they will be built.

Metallurgists are making use of the stereographic projection to a steadily increasing extent. In the last five years no less than 20 papers in American metallurgical journals alone have employed the stereographic projection; recent books on physical metallurgy, plastic deformation, X-rays and their applications, and crystal structure use it. Mineralogists have used the stereographic projection for many years in the description of symmetry classes and crystal planes, for it presents an accurate, easily understood plot of any angular relations in crystals with all unessential features eliminated (such as the accidentally determined size and shape of crystal faces). In metallography and physical metallurgy the projection is much used for the analysis of markings appearing on polished grains: slip lines, twins, cracks, structures formed by precipitation, magnetic-powder patterns, etch pits, etc. Data from certain types of X-ray photograms are most conveniently analyzed by its use, particularly those for determining the orientation of single crystals or the preferred orientation of grains in an aggregate. Calculations of how to tilt or cut a crystal parallel to a certain crystallographic plane or to reflect X-rays from a certain plane are rapidly carried out. It has been adopted almost universally to the exclusion of other methods by those studying the deformation of metallic crystals, save where the accuracy required is greater than a few tenths of a degree. Any directional property in a crystal or polycrystalline material can be shown on a stereographic projection; for example, the modulus of elasticity, yield point, etc. It has been repeatedly called to our attention that there is need of an elementary explanation of the principles and methods of stereographic projection, covering all the common applications in the field of metallography and physical metallurgy. The following contribution is an attempt to fill this need. The description of each method is supplemented with references to publications in which the method has been used. This paper describes a method of numerical computation for three-dimensional, unstable, miscible displacement behavior useful for heterogeneous systems, as well as for more ideal conditions. In the method, flow equations are first linearized by a perturbation approach. The basic flow process is separated and a solution for its behavior readily obtained. The remaining problem of deviations from the basic flow caused by non-ideal conditions is then subjected to numerical analysis. Results obtained from use of the method are also presented. Although conditions assumed in the test cal-culations were severe, results show the type of dispersing flow expected and appear quite satisfactory. The method has eliminated or reduced in importance problems of oscillating values near steep fronts, excessive computer smoothing, etc. A unique advantage of the method is that the source of variations from ideal behavior can be observed. ,The one serious drawback results from the algebraic complexity of the perturbation approach, and the need for second-order terms to be retained in calculations of interest. Fewer array points are available and more computer time is required than would be desired. However, these difficulties are also experienced with other approaches to the solution of three-dimensional dispIacement problems. INTRODUCTION Prediction of behavior of the miscible displacement process within a porous medium for any system of engineering importance is plagued by a number of difficulties. With typical fluid properties the displacing fluid has the lower viscosity, and there is a natural tendency toward flow instability. The problem of predicting instability is compounded by the fact that every real system is heterogeneous. Permeability will vary from point to point — not entirely systematically, and yet not in a random fashion leading to a readily defined average. Furthermore, permeability is unlikely to be isotropic. These permeability properties, which are characteristic of any real porous medium, accentuate the effects of flow instability. Another factor to be considered is that flow dispersion accompanies the displacement process in a porous medium. Mechanistically, dispersion is due to the fact that flow between any two points in the medium follows multiple tortuous paths, each characterized by slightly different flow properties. The fact that the coefficient characterizing dispersive properties of the real medium JS a tensor with variable elements complicates matters. Further difficulties arise because the parabolic influence, while not negligible, is small. Thus, there is a tendency toward steep and uneven displacement fronts along which dispersion smoothing must be represented accurately. Yet frequently used numerical analysis schemes may tend toward either instability, oscillation or excessive smoothing, none of which gives the desired accurate picture of flow behavior. Thus, while many experimental and analytical studies of the process have been made, predictions of actual performance are still subject to considerable uncertainty and possible improvement. This paper reports on part of a study which attempts to develop improved methods for solution of the flow equations describing the miscible displacement process. Of necessity, the calculations were performed on a large digital computer. A three-dimensional system is represented, and the coefficients defining dispersion and permeability can be varied in a manner representative of a real system. Because the differential equations are nonlinear, a first step is to linearize them using a perturbation approach. Objective of this approach has been to separate the basic flow which would occur in an ideal system and for which predictions are readily made. THE tailing from the gravity concentration plant of the Hecla Mining Co., Gem, Idaho, was former-ly loaded into railroad cars to be used for ballast, highway surfacing material, or concrete work, or dis-posed of by an aerial tramway, which dumped it into another gulch. The tailing averages about 1.2 per cent lead and 0.8 oz. silver to the ton. Further treatment for the recovery of the valuable metals had been investigat-ed several times with results that did not warrant the construction of a retreatment plant; but early in 1925 experimental work was again started with small tests, and later with a 10 tons per day flotation test plant. This showed that the tailing could be ground and treat-ed by flotation at a profit. It was decided to make the new flotation plant an addition to, rather than incor-porate it in the old concentrator, the original capacity of which had been increased many times, the present arrangement being by no means ideal. The old mill buildings were of timber and board contruction, creat-ing more or less fire hazard, so all new construction was made fireproof. Construction work on the new plant was started in the middle of July, 1925, and the plant was placed in operation early in December. The building is of concrete and steel with hollow tile walls, steel sash and corrugated asbestos roofing. The ball-mill floor has for its foundation a cellular reinforced concrete block about 14 ft. deep, extending to cemented river gravel, and the cells filled with tailing to give weight to the block. Overhead, built into the steel frame, is a 5-ton hand-operated traveling crane. With both ball-mills running fully loaded, there is not the slightest trace of vibra-tion in the foundation or building. The flotation floor is of reinforced concrete beam construction and spans Canyon Creek. Adjustable plunger feeders are arranged under the the tailing-bin, which feed by gravity to a 14-in. eleva-tor, discharging to a short 18-in. conveyor. From the conveyor the tailing is discharged into a dividing hop-per, from which point the plant is arranged in three separate units. Each unit consists of a ball-mill in closed circuit with a classifier, and an 8-cell flotation machine and has an approximate capacity of 300 tons per 24 hours.

I. INTRODUCTION THE geological field work of the Bully Hill district, upon which this paper is based, was begun July 1, 1908, and covered a period of three months. The time was found too short for a complete report and the district was again visited in the early part of July, 1912,. from which time detailed study of the locality continued until September of the same year. This paper is the result of observations made in the mines in the immediate vicinity of Winthrop, Shasta county, Cal., during these two periods of study. The preparation of this report has been greatly facilitated by various courtesies rendered the writer by D. M. Riordan, President of the Bully Hill Copper Mining & Smelting Co., and by John B. Keating and Herbert R. Hanley, managing officers actively in charge at the mines. The elaboration and further study of the notes and collections were carried on in the laboratories of the Departments of Geology and Mining at Columbia University, and the writer takes pleasure also at this point in expressing his acknowledgments to Profs. James F. Kemp, A. W. Grabau, Charles P. Berkey, and William Campbell, for advice and assistance. In order that one may appreciate at first reading the significance of some of the details which follow, and for the sake of clearness, a brief outline of the geological relationships is here given, together with certain conclusions which have been reached regarding the genesis. of the ores and the gypsum masses. In the Bully Hill mining district an associated series of Triassic lavas and tuffs, chiefly andesites, is preceded as well as followed by sediments. The entire system is tilted so that the original bedding planes dip in general to the southeast. The surrounding region has been greatly disturbed, and in the immediate vicinity of the mines close folding of the later sediments and extreme shearing of the igneous rocks locally is a striking feature. Into the nearly vertical shear zones have been intruded post-Triassic dikes of various rock types in the following order: alaskite-porphyry and andesite-porphyry. Outside the area under consideration diorite dikes are known, but they will not receive attention further than to note that' they, probably, represent a differentiation product of the same magma from which the other two dikes came. In this connection all the dikes have an important bearing on the origin of the ores and of the gypsum found in the mines.

THIS paper deals with the flotation of the mineral fluorite (calcium fluoride) and of two associated gangue minerals, calcite and quartz. The aim of the investigation was to produce "acid-grade" fluorite, which must contain less than one per cent of silica. Several reagents are used successfully in practice for floating fluorite from its ores. Oleic acid is the most widely used collector, usually at temperatures above 60°C, with sodium silicate as a dispersant for quartz and quebracho or tannin to depress calcite. Sulphides (e.g., galena) are often removed first by xanthate flotation. Many investigators23 report results in which more than 80 pct of the fluorite is recovered in a concentrate assaying 96 pct or more of fluorite and less than I pct of silica. This investigation was undertaken with the intention of floating the gangue, which is the minor constituent of the ore, from the fluorite. Hence emphasis was first placed on the cationic compounds that float quartz. No satisfactory separations were obtained in this way, and other reagents were investigated to discover whether these were more effective than oleic acid in floating fluorite from quartz in the usual way. The first part of the paper describes experiments with several long-chain collectors available commercially. Most of this work has been by captive-bubble and cylinder flotation tests, with some batch tests in a flotation machine. The second part describes the use of sodium cetyl sulphate as a collector for fluorite and includes laboratory tests and extension of the work to batch tests in the flotation machine. A method for determining the adsorption of sodium cetyl sulphate on fluorite has been developed and is described. Theory of Collection by Paraffin-chain Salts It may be assumed that these compounds are adsorbed at the mineral surface in one or more of three ways outlined by Kolthoff :12 I. Exchange adsorption between lattice ions in the mineral surface and collector ions in solution. Closely related is adsorption by the collecting mechanism postulated by Taggart,17 in which there is metathesis between the collector and the mineral cation or anion. 2. Exchange adsorption between adsorbed gegen ions (p. 67, ref. 19) and collector ions in solution. 3. Adsorption of nonelectrolytes (polarnonpolar) without displacement of adsorbed ions. With cationic collectors, inorganic cations in the solution (e.g., hydrogen ion) compete with the collector ions and therefore act as depressants, while inorganic anions have the same effect with anionic collectors.
