The oil and gas industry in Missouri in 1934 continued along the same lines that have marked the previous years. One new gas pool has been opened, others have been extended and in one oil pool a 25-bbl. well was completed. Missouri has no laws or regulations relating to drilling or the filing of well logs and the Geological Survey depends on its own scouting activities to obtain information. The data herein have been taken largely from a paper by the author recently published in the 58th Biennial Report of the State Geologist of Missouri. That report is available on application to H. A. Buehler, State Geologist, Rolla, Missouri, accompanied by ten cents in stamps, the amount of the postage. The preliminary figures, subject to revision, indicate that before the end of December, 1932, there were 2495 completions, of which 320 were oil wells, 1139 were gas wells and 1036 were dry. Over half of the oil wells were drilled in the Richards-Stotesbury area of Vernon County and were pumped for only a short period of time. During the period 1933-34 there were 201 completions, of which 10 were oil wells with an initial daily capacity of 100 bbl., 90 were gas wells, with an open flow of 26,578,256 cu. ft., and 101 were dry. The most active areas in drilling for gas in 1934 were the Marota area, sec. 17, T.49N., R.32W., Jackson County, the Grandview area in T.47N., R.33W., Jackson County, and the Plattsburg area in Clinton County. The Knoche oil pool in sec. 16, T.46N., R.33W., Cass County, was the scene of the only important oil development. In the Marota pool nine wells were completed to the Squirrel sand, with a combined open flow of about 5,000,000 cu. ft. The pool is on a small symmetrical dome with a closure of at least 30 ft. The average depth of the wells is 450 ft. The Squirrel sand (Upper Cherokee, Pennsylvanian) had a thickness of 94 ft. in a near-by dry hole, but only the upper 30 or 40 ft. is drilled in the producing wells. The largest well

MAGNESITE is found in 22 California counties, but many of the deposits are too small or too impure to be of commercial value. Several of sub-stantial size and quality were entirely exhausted by wartime operation. At present, three properties comprise the only known workable deposits in the state. Of these, the Western mine and the Patterson mine have been known and worked for many years, and have been described in con-siderable detail in various publications, therefore need only brief mention here, because of their proximity to the Bald Eagle mine. The latter, recently developed, is unusual in type of ore deposit, plant design and operation, as well as products made, and very little has been written concerning it. WESTERN MINE The Western mine, 32 miles south of Livermore, Calif., was formerly operated by C. S. Maltby. It has been a consistent producer for many years.1 The ore is of amorphous variety, occurring along fracture zones in serpentine. The veins vary greatly in width, the average being perhaps 8 ft., with the maximum indicated in one early stope of 40 ft.; 2 ft. is considered the minimum for economical mining. The strike of the veins is predominantly north and south, with dip to the west varying from 40° to 75°. Walls are well defined and as a rule firm and easily supported, Veins range in length from a few hundred feet to 1000 or more. Their maximum vertical extent is about 350 ft., but many run less. Early mining consisted of open-cut and glory-hole work on the larger outcrops. This was followed underground by a modified shrinkage system, the waste and low-grade horses being removed by hand sorting on the tramming levels and transported to surface dumps. (Cleveland Meeting, October, 1912.) I AM indebted to L. E. Bryant, of Danville, Ky., President of the Virginia Mining Co., operating coal-mines in Scott county, Tenn., for the following information relating to the existence of the Clinton iron-ore under the NW. slope of the Cumberland Plateau in Kentucky and Tennessee. During the past 15 years quite an important oil-field has been developed in a region having Wayne county, Ky., as its center, and a large number of wells have been drilled in that and adjacent territory in the search for oil. Many of' these wells have been carried to considerable depths below the recognized oil-bearing horizon, and one of them was drilled by Mr. Bryant at Pine Knot, a station on the Cincinnati, New Orleans & Texas Pacific railroad, a few miles north of the point where that road crosses the Kentucky-Tennessee State-line. The elevation of the surface at the crossing is about 1,400 ft. above sea-level. The railroad is located on the dividing ridge between the Cumberland river and Big South Fork. At a depth of 1,720 ft. below the surface the drill reached and passed through a formation which the drillers called " red rock," but which Mr. Bryant classified as Clinton iron-ore, as its geological position corresponded to that formation. The ore at this point was 6 ft. thick and appeared to be of uniform quality throughout. An analysis of the drillings gave : Fe, 33; Mn, 0.25; Si02? 3 ; Al203, 2 ; CaO, 13; MgO, 7 ; P,05, 0.333 per cent. ; S, trace. This analysis seems to confirm the belief that the ore is Clinton, and that it is of a quality equal to the average of the deep or unbleached Clinton ores in Tennessee and Alabama. This discovery led Mr. Bryant to make further examinations and inquiries, and he found that the stratum called " red rock " by the drillers had been passed through and noted in the great majority of the wells carried down to the same geological hori-

I HAVE already described to you many kinds of fusions and fires and still have many to describe if1 am to guide you, as I intend, among the operations of these processes. In all these, quantities of charcoal and various kinds of it must be handled continually and it therefore seems to me necessary to tell something about charcoal for aiding you in these processes. Without it artificers could scarcely bring their works to an end, because it is the food that nourishes the fire both for smelting and for softening the metals, or for calcining or drying things out. [61] It is a very powerful means and not only is its fire used for many more works than other fires, but it is also essential. Although there are many other things that make fire and would make it, I do not know of any that are better adapted for this purpose, or that can be more easily procured in large quantities, than wood and charcoal. THE application of hydrocarbon equilibrium data to various problems encountered in refining and in natural gasoline recovery is an old and well established practice. Both generalized data and data on specific hydro-carbon systems have been made available by a number of investigators. More recently such data have been applied to the relations governing the separation of oil and gas both in the reservoir and at the surface. Most of the applications to production problems, however, have been based upon examinations of surface samples of oil and gas. This paper describes a technique that has been used satisfactorily in a number of cases to calculate directly from the hydrocarbon analysis of and auxiliary laboratory data on a subsurface sample of the reservoir fluid the behavior of the oil and gas during the various stages of separation at the surface incident to production.

THE Phosphate Recovery Corporation operates three flotation plants, Nos. 1 and 2 concentrators about three miles northeast of Mulberry, Florida, and No. 3 plant at Wales, Tennessee. These plants represent the first commercial phosphate flotation operation and are also believed to be the largest nonmetallic flotation operation in the world at the pres-ent time. The details of this paper will be confined to plant No. 2, this being the newest and largest concentrator in Florida, and the flow sheet being practically the same as at plant No. 1. The No. 3 plant has been oper-ated but a short time and has been shut down since December, 1932, on account of the decrease in phosphate rock production. The phosphate washers usually are located centrally on a known deposit so that about two hundred acres of ground can be mined eco-nomically to each washer location. The washers are moved to new areas when the distance becomes too great for economical pumping. The flotation plants are built either adjacent to a washer, so that current debris may be utilized, or on the site of a former washer where there is sufficient accumulated debris available for mining, and the flotation plants must also be moved from time to time. Most of the water used in the Florida flotation plants is recovered after passing through a circulating system where most of the fine sus-pended matter is settled out, but some make-up water is obtained from deep wells near the plant. Power is obtained from the Tampa Electric Co. through the dis-tribution facilities of the International Agricultural Corporation. Flotation concentrate is hauled from the plant by trolley over the International Agricultural Corporation's trolley system, to the drying plant at Prairie, one mile northwest of Mulberry.

LEAD-REFINING practice at the. Bunker Hill differs to some extent from that of other United States refineries using the Parkes process, in that the Bunker Hill-has reverted to a custom used years ago of making two kinds of skims, or crusts, in the desilverizing kettles. Also, this was the first refinery to adopt the liquation process for silver skims as developed in Australia. Both of these ideas were brought to the attention of the operator by H. S. J. Sommerset, in the summer of 1924, while he was visiting metallurgical plants in the United States, when he was general superintendent of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty., Ltd., of Port Pirie, South Australia. Since Mr. Sommerset's visit, United States patents on the liquation process have been issued to George Kenneth Williams, of Port Pirie, South Australia. At the Bunker Hill, the lead bullion is conveyed from the blast furnaces to the refinery in brick-lined cast-steel pots, each having a capacity of 5 tons, by a 20-ton electric crane, to which is suspended a Fairbanks-Morse suspension-type scale on which the gross, tare and net weights are obtained. The bullion is poured from the small bullion pots into either one of two kettles of 105 tons capacity, and when a kettle is entirely filled the heavy dross is removed by skimming it into a 5-ton pot suspended by the crane. The crane operator becomes proficient in the manipulation and a kettle is skimmed in a very short time. After the kettle is skimmed clean the bullion is pumped to a kettle of the same size alongside, where the bullion is cooled until it has almost frozen. By using two kettles for the drossing operation, one to accumulate the bullion where the heavy dross is removed, and then pumping to a clean kettle comparatively free of hangings, etc., it is possible to reduce the copper content much lower than if only one kettle is used in the operation. The average yearly analysis of bullion is given in Table 1.

We have received from L. S. Cates, the following translation, by S. W. Mudd, of early mining methods in India: In Herodotus one finds a description how Darius by aid of his good horse and his good groom Oebares got himself the Kingdom of the Per-sians. He then set up in Persia twenty satrapies assigning to each a governor and fixing the tribute which was to be paid to him by the several nations. The following description of the method of getting the gold demanded of the Indians as tribute is copied directly from Book III Thalia, paragraphs 94 to 105 omitting the diversions of Herodotus which in one case consisted of a lapse of two pages following a semicolon before the author returned to the subject. The Indians, who are more numerous than any other nation with which we are acquainted paid a tribute exceeding that off every other people, to wit, three hundred and sixty talents of gold-dust. The way in which the Indians get the plentiful supply of gold, which enables then to furnish year by year so vast an amount of gold-dust to the King, is the following: Eastward of India lies a tract which is entirely sand. Here, in this desert, there live amid the sand great ants, in size somewhat less than clogs, but bigger than foxes. The Persian king has a number of them, which have been caught by the hunters in the land whereof we are speaking. These ants make their dwellings under ground, and like the Greek ants, which they very much resemble in shape, throw up sand-heaps as they burrow. Now the sand which they throw up is full of gold. The Indians, when they go into the desert to collect this sand, take three camels and harness them together, a female in the middle and a male on either side, in a leading-rein. The rider sits on the female, and they are particular to choose for the purpose one that has just dropped . her young; for their female camels can run as fast as horses, while they bear burdens very much better.

WHILE many parts of Canada's pre-Cambrian shield are well served by railway, it is frequently necessary for prospecting purposes to proceed farther into areas in-accessible by rail. To such areas in summer the canoe was at one time the accepted means of travel for the prospector while the dog team was much used in winter. Al-though summer travel was much improved by the development of the outboard motor, the lack of facilities for cheap transporta-tion has been a serious hindrance to the employment of capital in opening up the distant fields. The pre-Cambrian surface of Manitoba, like that of Ontario, is hummocky, with rounded hills and ridges of rock alternating with basinlike depressions and valleys oc-cupied by lakes and rivers or by many low-lying portions covered with muskeg. Routes to the mines have not usually been direct or easy and seasonal vagaries have presented problems in themselves. In summer, water transportation may be the cheapest method for the longer dis-tances but it is not every water route that will satisfy the conditions of loading freight onto a boat or scow and of conveying it without interruption to its destination. By its location, a mine may require a large program of boat transportation in summer over part of its route, to be followed by winter freighting for the remainder. The paper describes an improved process for the recovery, purification, and concentration of copper values from acidic dump leach liquors. The process employs a new liquid ion exchange material (LIX® 64 reagent) capable of separating copper values from iron and other impurities common to dump leach liquors in the typical pH range of 1.4-3.0. Properties and performance of the reagent are discussed. Design scale-up information for both pilot plants and commercial installations, including preliminary economics, are presented. Economic considerations include the production of electrolytic copper from the purified copper aqueous concentrate. INTRODUCTION Since the commercial acceptance of the liquid ion exchange process in the mineral processing industry, it has been predicted that a wide selection of chemical reagents to efficiently and economically separate many metals in solution under a wide range of conditions would be commercially available. Several years ago, General Mills began a basic research and development program to determine if it were possible to develop a reagent to extract economically metallic ion from existing process streams. Progress toward reaching this objective was reported in late 1963, when development of quantities of LIX -63 reagent, a highly selective reagent for the extraction of copper, was introduced. The properties of this reagent are described in a previous paper.' The development work with this reagent indicated that perhaps the largest potential application for a copper extractant, the treatment of acidic dump leach liquors, would not be economically possible with LIX-63 because of limitations of the reagent to extract copper below a pH of 3.0. The relatively small pH adjustment required with LIX-63 would result in a significant processing cost and the undesirable precipitation of ferric hydroxide from the liquor. This pointed to the need for another copper extractant which would extract copper from dump leach liquors without pH adjustment. General Mills was successful in synthesizing a molecule which does not have the pH limitation of the LIX-63, yet possesses the selectivity-solubility properties required of a metallic extractant. The resulting LIX-64 reagent broadens the pH range from which copper can be effectively extracted and separated from other metallic impurities. Of special significance is the fact that the reagent, LIX-64 was developed by combining the technical requirements of a specific problem in hydro-metallurgy with theoretical organic and physical chemical principles.

For his achievement in building the Panama Canal, Major-Gen. George W. Goethals was presented, on May 22, the John Fritz medal, the highest mark of distinction in the engineering profession. In the absence, in Europe, of Clemens Herschel, chairman of the Board of Award, Charles F. Rand presided over the meeting. Col. John J. Carty, who was chairman of the Board of Award at the time the medal was awarded to Gen. Goethals, and who ordinarily would have presented the medal, was detained in Paris by Government work, so the presentation was made by Ambrose Swasey. When calling the assembly to order, the Chairman said: This medal has been awarded by a Board representing four of the National Engineering Societies: American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and American Institute of Electrical Engineers. The medal was established in 1902, in honor of that great American engineer, John Fritz, and has never been awarded except to very distinguished men. In. 1902, the first award was made to John Fritz for scientific and industrial achievement. In 1905, to Lord Kelvin for his work in cable telegraphy and other scientific attainments. In 1906, to George Westinghouse for the invention and development of the air brake. In 1907, to Alexander Graham Bell for the invention and introduction of the telephone. In 1908, to Thomas A. Edison for the invention of the duplex and quadruplex telegraph, the phonograph, the development of a commercially practical incandescent lamp, the development of a complete system of electric lighting, including dynamos, regulating devices, underground system protective devices and meters. In 1909, to Charles T. Porter for his work in advancing the knowledge of steam engineering and in improvements in engine construction. In 1910, to Alfred Noble for notable achievements as a civil engineer. In 1911, to Sir William H. White for notable achievements in naval architecture. In 1912, to Robert W. Hunt for his contributions to the early development of the Bessemer process. In 1914, to Professor John E. Sweet for his achievements in machine design. In 1915, to Dr. James Douglas for notable achievement in mining, metallurgy, education, and industrial welfare. CERTAIN typical characteristics of bauxites, ores of aluminum permit their classification into a number of categories, each of which has special features that enable grouping within it deposits from widely scattered bauxite fields. There may be local variations in conditions that have introduced differences of lesser importance between similar deposits in different fields, resulting perhaps from the influence of factors other than those that have produced the distinguishing features of each of the different groups, but in general the similarity between the deposits in each group is sufficiently striking to make the grouping indicated of interest. Several factors and conditions enter into the decomposition process that results in the development of bauxites and laterites and affects their character. The principal conditions favoring optimum bauxitization are: (1) pres- ence of rocks with easily soluble minerals yielding residues rich in alumina; (2) effective rock porosity, enabling easy access and free circulation of water; (3) normal to abundant rainfall alternating with dry periods; (4) vegetation, including bacteria, advantageously distributed; (5) available sources of appropriate solution and precipitation agencies; (6) a tropical or at least a warm climate; (7) low to moderate topographic relief, allowing free movement of the water table but a minimum of erosion; and (8) long quiet periods in earth history. Assuming that all of these factors are operating to a greater or less degree, it seems that the one that affects most the physical character of the resulting bauxite or laterite deposits is the chemical and mineralogical composition of the rocks that by their decay yield the bauxite deposits. This factor is used in the classification followed in this paper. In the process of weathering of ordinary silicate and carbonate rocks of the earth's crust, whether of igneous or sedimentary origin, it is the minerals of the alkalies that yield most readily to attack. The alkaline earth compounds also offer no great resistance, particularly the carbonates. Thus, among the rock-forming elements, those producing the most insoluble compounds are aluminum, iron, and silicon, together with certain ones of less importance, such as titanium, manganese, and phosphorus. In general, the strata sequence of the immediate roof in the under- ground coal mine openings can be divided into three types. They are: (A) each stratum deflects independently, (B) some stratum (or strata) loads on the underlying stratum, and (C) each stratum loads on its underlying stratum. The flexural behavior of the immediate roof which is made up of multiple strata not only depends on the material property, geometry, and external loading of rock strata, but also on the strata sequence. A computer program based on the beam-column theory is written for determining the bending stress and deflection for the generalized immediate roof. The flexural behavior of the immediate roof in various strata sequences are investigated for the following effects: roof span, horizontal stress, thickness and Young's modulus of the lowest stratum. In addition, some of the results are compared with the results of the finite element method.

The important place in the economic life of the country that is occupied by the United States Geological Survey and the various state surveys is appreciatcd by most members of our Institute. To the public at large, the functions of these surveys are no doubt largely unknown, and taken for granted. Possibly a realization of the value of the work of these government branches is brought home most fully to that group of our members whose duties as examining engineers and mining geologists take them to mines and prospects in many different parts. The examining engineer or geologist is usually seeking for a judgment on the value of an enterprise from the standpoint of the useful minerals that may or may not be present; he must also attempt some prediction as to future market prices. On his opinion rests the determination of the expenditure of money, which rendered into other language means the expenditure of human effort. An opinion on an exploring venture or the reasoning out of the probable extensions of an orebody requires among many other things a background of knowledge covering the geologic horizons not only of an immediate area but of the surrounding area, a knowledge of the structural geology and of the causes that have operated to form the ores as they are. The great storehouses of this knowledge are the statistics, reports and maps issued by the various geological surveys. They supply the groundwork for additional observations. To these, reference is always made when going into a new district. The technique of work in the field and laboratory, and to some extent the hypotheses that underlie our methods of approach, have been formed by men such as Van Hise, Leith, Kemp, Spurr, Emmons and Lindgren, who developed their powers in the service of the geological surveys. In addition to whatever originality of thought, or power to observe facts and analyze them, may be our portion, we require, in the application of the arts and sciences, a knowledge of what has already been done. We stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before, and the extent of our vision often depends upon the thoroughness with which we form earlier work into one whole and make use of it.

Grain boundary dij]usion coefficienls were measured in tungsten between 1400° and 2200° C and can be expressed by the equation sq cm per sec This activation energy confirms some eavlier estimates made .from tungsten sintering experiments. Grain boundary diffusion was found to occur in sub-bozrndavies having -misorientations of less than 10 deg. The actiuation energy for this subboundavy diffusion is equal to that for dijjusion in incoherent grain boundaries with in the limits of error. This is shown to be consistent with the dislocation model of Low-angle boundaries wheve diffusion occlcvs along- the dislocation 'YPipes" comprising -tile boundary. RECENT investigations of the sintering of tungsten powders all report activation energies which are considerably less than the activation energy for tungsten volume diffusion. Kothari' reports a value of 100 * 5 kcal per mole, Hayden and Brophy' obtained 90 kcal per mole, and Vasilos and smith3 found 110.7 kcal per mole from their sintering studies. Since most determinations of the activation energy for volume diffu-sion4-' fall between 120 and 160 kcal per mole (the true value seems most likely to be nearer 150 kcal per mole), the conclusion is drawn that the mass transport leading to densification during sintering is accomplished by grain boundary diffusion. This interpretation is consistent with various diffusion models of the sintering process. 10-12 Vasilos and Smith calculate diffusion coefficients from their data which fit the equation D * 1.36 x 10* exp(-llO,700/HD However, no direct measurements of tungsten grain boundary diffusion have been made. Furthermore, considerable disagreement exists between the directly measured values of tungsten volume diffusion.'-' In order to corroborate the inferred results of the sintering experiments concerning grain boundary diffusion and to provide accurate diffusion data essential to the analysis of the kinetics of creep, oxidation, precipitation, and so forth, the present work was undertaken to measure self-diffusion in single-crystal and polycrystalline tungsten between 1400" and 2200°C. It is within this temperature range that tungsten sintering is done, the re crystallization of tungsten occurs, and the widest application of tungsten as a high-temperature material will probably be made. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Radioactive WlE5 was produced by irradiating tungstic acid in a neutron flux of 1.2 x 1012 neutrons per sq cm per sec for 36 hr. A 2-week waiting period was allowed for the decay of w"~ also produced by the irradiation. (w"~ has a half-life of 24 hr.) The half-life of the remaining isotope was determined to be 75 days confirming the presence of w lE5 and the absence of any undesired radionuclide. Specimens 4 in. in diam and $ in. thick were cut from polycrystalline swaged tungsten rods (recrystal-lized) and from Linde single-crystal rods. Chemical analyses of these materials appear in Table I. Actually upon closer examination, the single-crystal specimens were found to consist of several subgrains separated primarily by tilt boundaries in which the misor-ientation ranged from 3 to 10 deg. Thus, it was possible to measure boundary diffusion coefficients in these low-angle subboundaries as well as in the incoherent boundaries of the polycrystalline specimens. The two faces of each specimen were ground flat and parallel within 0.0001 in. The radioactive tungstic acid was dissolved in concentrated ammonium hydroxide, placed on the ground flat of the specimen, and evaporated to dryness. The oxide was then reduced in hydrogen at 1000°C resulting in a layer of wlE5 approximately 1 p thick. The diffusion anneals were performed in vacuum in a tantalum resistance furnace. Time at temperature ranged from 10 hr at 1400°C to 2 hr at 2200°C. The penetration profile was determined by measuring the residual activity after successive removal of surface layers by grinding on metallographic polishing paper. Extreme care was exercised to insure that sections were always taken normal to the diffusion direction; this was verified repeatedly by checking that front and back surfaces of the specimen remained parallel. It is obvious that mining has been influenced to a high degree by political and economic events, many of which are of such a nature that the mining industry has relatively little influence in shaping them. I cannot present too optimistic a picture for the immediate future, although I feel that from the long-range standpoint one need not be pessimistic about the future of the mining industry. The population of the United States is continuing to increase and with it has come an expanded consumption of metals on a per capita basis. THE production of crude oil in Wyoming rose to 44,290,010 bbl. in 1923 and declined, during 1924, to 39,295,030 bbl., a decrease of about 11 per cent. The Salt Creek field supplies 75 to 80 per cent. of the production. Pipeline runs from the Salt Creek field reached a maximum in November, 1923, at a daily average for the month of 116,437 barrels. During 1924, the gas pressure in Salt Creek has declined rapidly and the production dropped to about 60,000 bbl. per day. Part of 'the decline during the last few months was due to lack of power to pump the wells. The electric-power plant of the Midwest Refining Co. did not begin to deliver current until the middle of December, by which time several hundred wells were off production. The cold snap in December, which brought, the temperature down to 30° below zero on the 17th, tied up operations almost completely and the average production for the month was only 49,545 barrels. As more wells are being pumped and the number of dead wells reduced, the production is rising and was up to 61,000 bbl. during the last week of January. A further increase is expected as the weather becomes warmer. The production of Salt Creek, by months, during 1924 is given in Table 1. In recent years, increased attention is being paid to the application of oil-agglomeration technique for (a) improved recovery of low- ash clean coal, (b) effective beneficiation of low-grade coking coals and (c) removal of pyrite sulphur from high-sulphur coals. In this technique, which has been proved to be more effective than convention- al froth-flotation, advantage is taken of the oleo-philic nature of finely ground coal to separate it under controlled conditions from the associated minerals which are hydrophilic in nature. Unlike froth- flotation, no aeration is needed in the process and the concentrates which are obtained in the form of agglomerates or micro-pellets have easier dewatering characteristics. Optimization of operating variables in treating individual raw feed is a pre-requisite for the successful application of this process. A 10 gram batch unit was employed in the present test series. This paper presents - results from these investigations on such operating variables as (i) size of coal, (ii) amount of oil used, (iii) time of stirring, (iv) rate of stirring, (v) solid content in slurry and (vi) effect of conditioning.
