[THE conditions that govern the selection of a suitable type of detachable bit for the small isolated mine, for rock work and tunnel contracting and for the large mine are quite dissimilar, therefore intelligent recommendation of a particular make of detachable bit must involve consideration of many factors. Small, isolated mines may find advantageous a detachable bit that a larger mine cannot afford to use, because of more efficient conventional steel sharpening and steel-distribution practice, but a small mine may of be able to adopt the practice of larger mines because of necessary capital expendites for equipment for detachable-bit sharpening and shanking. The perfect detachable bit, suitable for all conditions, has n yet been developed. CONVENTIONAL DRILL BIT IN USE That drilling speed increases as the hit gauge decreases is well known, but since small-hole drilling is the exception rather than the rule the rate of such increase is probably not so generally recognized. Tests married out by Holman Brothers Limited1 with 7/8-in. show that when bit sizes are reduced from. 1 ½ in. 1 3/8 in., and 1 3/16 in., to 1 3/8 in., 1¼ in., and it' in., respectively, the volume of the hole is15 per cent less and the drilling speed 4q per cent higher. Recent tests by the United States Bureau of Mines2,3in hard, uniform basalt showed that a reduction in average gauge from 2.077 to 1.826 in., a difference of 0.251 in., gave an increased drilling speed of 65 per cent. The limits to which a drill hole may be extended depend upon the loss in gauge. Since the conventional bit with 5° and 14° clearances did not possess sufficient reaming edge to permit the smaller gauge changes that were required for small-hole drilling, experiments were made in bit construction with a view to correcting this deficiency. This resulted in the adoption of the full reaming cross bit (having full Carr characteristics) by some mines.4 In order to drill holes having a minimum taper from the collar to the bottom of the hole, full reaming center-hole cross bits with 90° cutting angles, 5° and I4° wing tapers, forged on 7/8-in. quarter-octagon drill rods, are used in the conventional drill-steel practice at Hollinger. In the steel shop close attention is given to the condition of the dies and dollies, which, combined with a rigid inspection of the finished bit, ensures as nearly a perfect bit as can be forged economically. Shop practices and costs have been discussed in earlier papers.5,6 The method by which the radii for the special dies used for forging bits of different gauge diameter are obtained so that the points and reaming edges cut circles of the same diameter has been discussed by Hibbert.7 REQUIREMENTS FOR DETACHABLE BIT FOR HOLLINGER Under these circumstances, it was apparent that it would be difficult to introduce a detachable bit that could successfully compete with the conventional bit already in]

The fact that the floatability of minerals with fatty-acid collectors changes as the pH of a pulp varies was utilized in the early days of flotation, when sulphuric acid was used with oleic acid to float sphalerite and galena. from gangues which themselves float with fatty acids in alkaline pulps. Gaudin1 showed that this difference in floatability is a regular function of the extent of the change in pH. The present paper offers an explanation of the phenomenon, and on the basis thereof sets up recommendations for control of soap-flotation operations. Experimental Parallelism between floatability of a mineral in a given environment and its contact angle in that environment is so well established,2 and the contact angle is so readily and rapidly measurable, that contact angles have been used throughout the experimental work to indicate relative floatability. Experiments comprised contact-angle measurements on a number of representative minerals and metals, and a variety of subsidiary tests designed to check and to amplify the contact-angle indications. Contact-angle measurements were made by the method described in detail by del Giudice.3 Sequence of procedure for determination of the points of Fig. I was: I. Polish specimen. Most specimens yielded zero contact angle after polishing; a few showed a slight "cling." Cling is characteristic of specimens that pit on polishing; it is due to a residue of organic contamination, originally on the particle surface, which persists in the pits. The cling did not change total contact angle after conditioning, and is not, therefore, additive in the upper part of the curves of Fig. I. It may have broadened the bases of the curves for the affected minerals slightly. 2. The specimen was next conditioned in soap solution for 5 minutes. 3. The conditioned particle was transferred, under conditions that precluded surface drying, to an aqueous solution of the pH desired and contact angle determined. 4. The particle was thereupon transferred, again without surface drying, to water. The confirmatory tests will be described at the places pertinent in the argument. Discussion of Results Gaudin and Vincent4 have shown that contact angles with heptoic acid as a collector decrease for a given specimen when the concentration of collector present falls below a certain value. A similar reduction in angle occurs with collector-conditioned particles that are visibly slime-coated, and varies roughly with the extent of coating. Since in the last case the reduction in angle is certainly due to reduction in the proportion of total conditioned mineral surface presented to the bubble, the authors believe that the same condition prevails in the first case cited, and that similar reduction in angle and floatability will occur whenever starvation quantities of collector are present, whether by design or by reason of excessive consumption.

The Nicola Valley coal-field is small, but it seems likely to become important because of its commanding position in a rich region that is developing rapidly. Bituminous coking-coal in workable quantity has not been found at any other point between the Crow's Nest Pass region, about 400 miles to the east, and Vancouver island, 250 miles westward. The Canadian Pacific railway reached the Nicola valley two years ago ; two other lines, the Canadian Northern and the Great Northern, are building towards the valley. The vast region between the Rocky mountains and the Pacific coast, extending northward for several hundred miles from the international boundary, which has been the scene of extensive mining- and smelting-operations for many years, is filling up with settlers, who are attracted by the wealth of minerals and timber, the rich soil of the valleys, and the fine climate. The Nicola river, flowing westward through the valley of that name in the Yale district, discharges into the Thompson river, which is the eastern branch of the Fraser. The transcontinental line of the Canadian Pacific railway crosses the mouth of the Nicola river at Spence's bridge, 178 miles from Vancouver. From Spence's bridge the Nicola branch line ascends the valley for 40 miles to Merritt, the coal-center, and continues 7 miles farther to the town of Nicola. Thus the haul from the mines at an elevatioiz of 2,000 ft. to salt water is 218 miles down river-grades. The Nicola branch will be continued about 150 miles farther eastward to Penticton, where it will connect with an extension of the line through the rich Kootenay and Boundary districts. The Canadian government has granted a subsidy of $6,000 per mile, to which the provincial government is planning to add $5,000 per mile, to assist in the construction of the Nicola extension. Coal was produced in this state, by white men, at an earlier date than in any state west of the Mississippi River, and for many years its production was larger than that of any state in that area. The coal immediately adjacent to St. Louis was mined commercially earlier than elsewhere because of a ready market which could be reached by teams. Generally the coal seams are more or less "spotty" in character, and in many places openings made in thick coal could only be mined for a few years. All of the data available from state survey reports, county histories and a few other sources are shown in Table 66.

INTRODUCTION General IT is general practice to evaluate the strength properties of a particular metal from its stress-strain [(S1 - E1]) curve obtained by means of a conventional tension test. Such a stress-strain curve, Fig I, illustrates two important properties of a metal, its ability to strain harden, and its ability to withstand a certain limiting stress, the "fracture stress,"[ (s'r)], and a certain limiting strain, the "ductility" [(e1)], before it fails by separation. These two fracturing characteristics are the coordinates of the point of fracture in Fig I. In the case of a metal which necks in a tension test, both the fracture stress and the ductility (measured in a tension test) are dependent upon (a) the shape of the neck and (b) average values of the stresses and strains over the cross section at the moment of fracture. However, for the purpose of this investigation, these average quantities, rather than the actual values, may be considered for reasons of simplicity. It appears that the conclusions also hold true if the analysis were carried out for actual values of fracture stress and ductility at the locus of failure. In this paper, the effects of straining (at room temperature) by various methods on [ ] the above metal characteristics, which were determined by subsequent tension tests will be discussed. According to our present knowledge, any such prestraining results in a stress-strain curve (in subsequent testing by tension), Fig 2, the general shape, or flow characteristics, of which can be derived from the original stress-strain curve of the unstrained metal minus a certain portion exhausted by the initial straining. This phenomenon is called strain hardening, and may be measured by the magnitude of the cut-off, or the "effective strain," from which the new curve must start in order to coincide in its plastic branch with the original stress-strain curve.

THE lower cost of producing oil from naturally flowing wells compared with pro-duction costs accruing from artificial lifting methods has stimulated much research, with the joint purpose of extending the natural flowing life of wells and of increas-ing the productivity of small wells. The laboratory investigation described herein was made to determine the effect of a slotted liner on the pressure gradient in the vicinity of the wall of a flowing well. Flow restrictions caused by the liner induce energy losses between the oil-bearing for-mation and the inside of the liner, which may be reduced by improved liner design, and thereby the flow capacity of wells may be increased. These losses have been evalu-ated for rectangular slots of different sizes, and means are suggested for reducing them. The dearth of information concerning the nature of the flow of fluids from uncon-solidated sands through small openings in the walls of pipes-as represented by the flow of oil from an oil sand into a slotted liner-is acknowledged. Although the bene-fits to be realized by operators through the use of optimum liners is just beginning to be recognized generally, Coberly1 in 1937 pointed out that the functioning of screen casing is an important factor in the pro-duction of oil. From his study on the selection of size of oil strings for wells in California, Parks2 concluded, in part, that the perforated section of the oil string de-serves continued study, especially with respect to the selection of perforations. The growing use of gravel packing result-ing from certain research findings lends even more significance to the problem of selecting optimum liners, as the application of these methods usually requires slotted liners or other kinds of perforated liners. The present study was made to obtain further information for the guidance of engineers and operators in selecting slotted liners and to develop a laboratory method that may be used in analyzing possible pressure conditions surrounding most types of perforated casings used in producing oil wells, so that the present inadequate fund of knowledge on this important subject may be expanded.

It is well known that high residual stresses are created in tubing by the sinking process, in which no internal tool or mandrel is used.l-4 In this process, the wall thickness is usually slightly increased.4,5 In tube drawing with a plug, the residual stresses are gradually reduced with increasing reduction of wall, and, by the conventional approximation methods of stress measurement, no stress is detected in tubing in which the wall reduction is over 50 per cent of the total reduction in cross-sectional area.l,6 It has also been observed that higher stresses are set up by the use of wide-angle dies than by acute dies.? 'he actual stress distribution in drawn tubing has been investigated by a few workers,7"9 but has not been related to the conditions of the drawing process. Some attempts have been made to correlate accelerated cracking tests for stresses in brass products with the magnitude of the circumferential stresses and the condition of the metal. l-10 Materials and Preparation The material used in this experiment was commercial cartridge-brass (70 per cent Cu, 30 per cent Zn) tubing in the straightened and annealed condition.† This tubing was of various outside diameters and had a wall thickness of 0.032 in. It was sunk to 1/2-in. outside diameter by means of an experimental 10,000-lb. hydraulic draw-bench, with a maximum drawing speed of 8 ft. per minute. All dies were of 1/2-in. diameter. Various die materials and contours were used in order to study the effect of die design on residual stresses in the tubing; the specifications for the dies are given in Fig. I. Castor oil was used throughout as lubricant. Chattering occurred in sinking some of the tubing, particularly when dies having the more acute angles were used, but the tubes showing chatter marks did not differ markedly from those with a smooth surface regarding the magnitude of residual stress. The source of the chattering has not yet been revealed. The wall of the tubing becomes thicker during s nking, as previously observed.4,5 The increases in wall thickness were 3, 7 and 9.5 per cent on the average for 6, 20 and 33 per cent reductions in diameter, no effect of the contour being noticeable. The reductions mentioned throughout this investigation do not consider this fact, but are reductions of the outside diameter. For the evaluation of the residual stress two fundamentally different methods were used. THE test of the English cupellation furnace should be so supported that the cupeller can change readily the elevation of the test, and at the same time watch the litharge channel. It is also important to raise or lower either side, independently of the other, in me of uneven wear of the side walls or of the breast. If the refined silver is poured from the test, it is much better to control the lowering of the test from the front than to raise the back by screws or a lever. In order to enable the cupeller to manipulate the test with one hand, when the litharge is running, and to pour the refined silver from the test without aid, I have altered the common support to the test, as shown in the accompanying drawing. The common method of supporting the test is by four screws, working in cross-bar nuts beneath the test. The points of the screws set, into the test plate upon which the test rests. These screws are usually worked by pounding or pulling upon the heads, which may be either small pulleys or straight bars, as shown on the back screws in the drawing. The sizes and density of precipitates in an intemally oxidized 0.19 wt pct Al-Ag single crystal have been determined by low-angle X-ray scattering and by transmission electron microscopy . The correlation in particle sizes measured by the two techniques is reasonably good. For an oxidizing temperature of 800°C the particles were found to INTERNAL oxidation of dilute alloys of aluminum in silver produces an oxide which has an excess of oxygen compared to Al2O3.' It is believed that the excess oxygen is an indication of the small sizes of the oxide particles. Depending upon the particular model chosen for the oxide structure, the size of the o-A1 particles can be calculated as a function of the oxygen-to-aluminum ratio. These calculations pre- have diameters in the range 30 to 140A, with a mean size of about 50.4 as observed by electron microscopy. At lower oxidizing temperatures, less than 600°C, no clearly resolved particles are formed, and it is suspected that if A1-0 clusters exist they must be exceedingly small, i.e., 10A or less in diameter. dicto that the particles would vary in size from 15 to 100A. This range of sizes is amenable to detection by both small-angle X-ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy. This paper compares the cluster sizes in such internally oxidized A1-Ag alloys determined by transmission electron microscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering. A SURVEY of Minerals Beneficiation Div. membership indicated genuine interest in automatic process control, but revealed that the average mill is operating with a minimum of self-regulating devices. Apparently, the mill operators are content to continue without controls until the practicality of self-regulating devices is more generally accepted, or, in the opinion of the writer, until automatic controls become a necessity to meet economic demands of product quality and cost. Both to stimulate interest in control, and to solicit publication of technical know-how by members and equipment manufacturers, this paper presents a cross section of control problems in two general categories: (a) Control problems that can usually be solved by reference to the literature, i.e. controls that have proven successful in the mineral or chemical industries; (b) Problems that are troublesome and frequently unsolved due to unavoidable adverse conditions in the mill circuit to be controlled.

Since the entry of the United States into global war, virtually all data and information necessary for compiling figures on world petroleum consumption have become unavailable. This situation undoubtedly will continue until the world petroleum industry can return to a peacetime basis. During the past 10 years, the authors, by publishing annual estimates of .world consumption, have attempted to emphasize the importance of a yearly world-wide survey of petroleum supply and demand. It is beconling more and more evident that statistics for the United States alone can no longer give a comprehensive idea of the state of the petroleum industry, even within the United States itself. Therefore, when conditions in the industry again become normal, it is the hope of the authors that those bureaus equipped to do so will carry forward the study of petroleum supply and demand on a world-wide basis. Enough data and information are available, however, to attempt a rough estimate of world output of crude petroleum and petroleum substitutes for 1942, which to some extent may reflect the trend of world consumption. This estimate by countries, as compared with the output in 1941, is shown in Table I. The world production of crude petroleum and petroleum substitutes for 1942 is estimated at 2,208,000,000 bbl., or a decrease of 171,000,000 bbl. under 1941. Crude production is believed to have decreased by about 200,000,000 bbl., (about 9 per cent); while petroleum substitutes increased by 28,500,000 bbl., (nearly 20 per cent). The decline of crude output in the United States is estimated at 19,000,000 bb1.—less than 2 per cent; while that in foreign countries is estimated at 180,000,000 bbl., or more than 20 per cent. The marked decline abroad is due largely to losses in Venezuela and Colombia, where the lack of ocean transportation became the controlling factor, and in the East Indies and Burma, where military invasion brought about the destruction of the fields. The production of petroleum substitutes in 1942 apparently reached a new high figure of 7.5 per cent of the total world petroleum output. The important features of petroleum production outside of the United States are the changes that have taken place during the year in the supply of the Axis countries. In Japan the output for 1941 was estimated at 8,800,000 bbl., 5,500,000 of which were petroleum substitutes. It is believed that the output of synthetic oils during 1942 substantially increased, raising the total interior production of Japan to nearly 10,-ooo,ooo bbl. Also, during 1942 Japanese armed forces gained possession of oil fields having a normal peacetime output of about 78,000,000 bbl. per year. The production of these areas for 1942 is estimated at some 23,000,000 bbl., which indicates that Japan is now getting at least 33,000,000 bbl. a year, which exceeds by 8,000,000 bbl. Its

Tile sharp-yield point found in magnesium crystals in the solulion-treated and aged condition is studied by dislocation internal-friction experiments. The results show that the sharp yield is not file to the sudden release of pinned dislocations hut is movc likely due to the rapid multiplication of an initially small number of dislocations. Recovery or the dislocation internal friction after deformation is also studied. This yecovery results from the re-pinning of dislocations by a solute, presumably nitrogen, which moves with a relatively small activation energy. SHARP-yield points, when they occur, are a striking feature of the stress-strain curve generated during a tensile test. Although commonly associated with steel, sharp yielding has been found in a variety of metallic and nonmetallic crystalline materials. In particular, sharp-yield points have been found in zinc"' and cadmium3 containing nitrogen. With this background, Geiselman and Guy4 investigated the tensile properties of magnesium single crystals containing nitrogen to see if sharp yielding also occurs in this system. They found that sharp yields did indeed occur in solution-treated and aged specimens tested at elevated temperature but were not able to give conclusive proof that the sharp yield was caused by nitrogen, a yield drop being observed even in their purest crystals. Sharp-yield points have also been found in various polycrystalline magnesium alloys.7'8 In the study of the sharp-yield phenomenon it is desired to observe the behavior of dislocations in the earliest stages of the deformation process. Internal-friction experiments are useful for this purpose because dislocation damping is sensitive to the mobility of free-dislocation segments. At low strain amplitudes the damping, A, due to the the forced vibration of dislocation segments of average length L is ? =KAL4 [1] where A is the dislocation density and K, if the applied frequency is well below the resonant frequency of the dislocation segments? is a constant for the sample under observation.5 Dislocation damping, because of the fourth-power dependence on L, is particularly sensitive to the creation of free-dislocation segments during deformation. Since sharp yielding is associated with the sudden release of pinned-dislocation segments, marked changes in the dislocation damping are expected at the yield point.6 The use of the dislocation-damping observations to help elucidate the incompletely understood mechanism of yielding in magnesium is the primary objective of the experiments reported here. PROCEDURE Many investigations have shown that very marked and rapid changes occur in the dislocation damping of of a deformed material as soon as the straining is stopped.5 It was quite essential, then, for the purpose of this investigation, to make the damping measurements during the deformation of the samples. This can only be accomplished through the use of the ultrasonic-pulse method. In this method traveling sound-wave pulses are used and, in contrast to resonating-bar methods, only the sample ends are set in vibration. Thus, the sample can be gripped along its sides in the tensile-test machine without disturbing the damping measurements. In the pulse method, the decrease in the amplitude of a sound pulse is measured as it travels back and forth through the sample. If A is the amplitude after traversing a distance x and A. is the initial amplitude, A=Aoe-ax [2] and a is called the attenuation. It is commonly measured either in units of cm-I or as db per µ sec. The observed attenuation in a metal sample is due to a number of causes. These include scattering by grain boundaries and impurity particles, thermo-elastic damping, diffraction effects, stress-induced ordering of solute atoms, and dislocation damping. The total observed attenuation in a given sample usually cannot be resolved into these various components, but changes in a due solely to changes in dislocation damping can be accurately determined, provided the experiment is arranged so that all other sources of damping are held constant. It is desired to reduce the extraneous sources of attenuation to a minimum and for this reason the experiments are done on single crystals of high purity. Magnesium crystals offer the further advantage that, when properly oriented, only a single set of slip planes is active during deformation. Crystal Preparation. The method of sample preparation is similar to that of Geiselman and Guy.4 The starting material was high-purity, sublimed magnesium rod supplied by the Dow Chemical Co. IT has long been known that there are wide variations in the thermo-electric potential of pyrite. In the last few years a study of this variation and other properties of pyrite was carried out at the University of Toronto by F. G. Smith on specimens of pyrite from many loyalities. As a result of these studies the pyrite geothermometer was developed by Professor Smith. The calibration of the pyrite geothermometer is based on the assumption that "crystals of any one electronically conducting mineral species deposited at a high temperature have a more positive thermoelectric potential than crystals deposited at a low temperature, and the thermo-electric potential varies continuously between any given limits of the temperature of deposition." The cause of the variation was postulated to be crystal discontinuities, such as lineage boundaries. As yet this postulated relationship has not been established as fact. On theoretical grounds it is indicated that the thermo-electric potential of pyrite or any other partial conductor is dependent upon a number of factors as well as the temperature of formation. For this and other reasons there is ground for doubt as to the validity of the relationship postulated above. To date a large number of readings have been made with the pyrite geothermometer which have been recorded in terms of the calibration of the instrument in degrees centigrade. So far most of the pyrite tested by this technique has been in association with gold ore. The values for the temperature of formation obtained in these tests appear to be reasonable and, in relation to geological problems, to vary in the right sense. Determinations on some specimens not in association with gold ore have given readings that appear to be much too high, taking into account the probable maximum temperature of the host rock. To sum up, although many determinations made with the pyrite geothermometer appear to give reasonable values for the temperature of formation of the pyrite, there are at the same time other readings which seem anomalous. On the basis of an examination of available results of work with the pyrite geothermometer, two problems must be considered: 1—the validity of the calibration of the pyrite geothermometer; and 2— the nature of the distribution of the thermo-electric potentials of pyrite in relation to the specific problems that have been examined. In this paper the academic problem relating to the validity of the calibration of the pyrite geothermometer will not be discussed. Instead, the variations of thermo-electric potential of pyrite in association with gold veins will be discussed with regard to specific examinations. The first of these two examinations deals with the distribution of thermo-electric potentials of pyrite in association with a gold vein and was carried out in the McIntyre Porcupine Mine, Schumacher, Ont., in the summer of 1949 as part of a study with this technique. The second problem deals with variations of thermo-electric potential of pyrite in gold ore specimens from all over the world. The specimens used in this study were part of the private collection of Frank Ebbutt, geologist for Howe Sound Exploration Co. Results of Detailed and Reconnaissance Studies In discussion of the results of determinations made in these two studies the values of thermo-electric potential in millivolts will be used. It will be noted that in some of the diagrams the determinations are recorded in terms of pyrite geothermometer temperatures. Fig. 1 is a calibration chart relating pyrite geothermometer temperatures and thermoelectric potentials. A full discussion of the technique is given in the original paper by F. G. Smith.' (written discussion *) .-As it is impossible to spare the time for a lengthy discusson of this excellent paper, I am dwelling only on points where either the information is not clear or opinion differs radically from that of the authors. On page 1218, relative to oil rock, the authors state that the presence of oil rock is always taken as a favorable indication of proximity to ore. As thick, highly carbonaceous, oil rock has been found quite often in isolated patches outside of the district proper, the mere presence of oil rock is not always an indication of the propinquity to ore deposits. Regarding glass rock, I agree with the authors, that, generally speak-ing, sphalerite in the glass rock is spotty; however, they fail to mention that nearly all mines contain more or less ore in the glass rock, the usual location being near the toe of the pitch. On page 1220, they say that disseminated deposits are only found in, or close to, the oil rock. To refute this statement, I refer them to a typical disseminated deposit situated at the Adam and Eve shaft of the Frontier Mining Co. This deposit is located in the central horizon of the Galena dolomite, that is, in those sedimentaries containing flint nodules. Perfect crystals of sphalerite are found disseminated through-out the rock, and are commonly known by the miners as strawberry jack. I believe all top runs, or upper deposits as described above, should be classed as disseminated; physically the ore makes its occurrence in just such a manner.

In their analysis of Eqs. 29 and 30, the authors correctly deduce the following behavior limits for the "differential capacitance model". 1. When the rate group a is sufficiently large, the model reduces to that implied by Eq. 1, i.e., the simple convection-diffusion model. 2. When the rate group a is sufficiently small, the model reduces to that implied by Eq. 1 with 1 replaced by 1, i.e., the simple convection-diffusion model with a total pore volume equal to that occupied by the mobile fluid in the original model. Unfortunately, the authors' solution, Eq. C-1, to the transformed versions of Eqs. 29 and 30 does not exhibit the same limiting behavior. For example, as a approaches zero, Eq. C-1 reduces to the solution to Eq. 1 or, equivalently, the solution to Eqs. 29 and 30 for sufficiently large values of a. Therefore, it can be concluded that Eq. C-1 is not a general solution to Eqs. 29 and 30; this conclusion can be easily verified by substitution. I suggest that the correct form of Eq. C-1 is the following: It is generally realized that accounting for dispersion effects is an extremely tricky business; therefore no one should criticize the pragmatic approach of Coats and Smith who proceeded by accessible theory, made use of some available phenomenology, and who then took the trouble to check the consequences, against their own carefully undertaken experimental results. Here I should like to defend three assertions: (1) Coats and Smith copy the error of previous authors in the formulation of the so-called simple diffusion model (which error is then retained in their differential capacitance model); (2) improving the fit between data and the predictions of an arbitrary model by increasing the number of parameters is a triviality unless the parameters are disposable by being independently determined; and (3) existing experimental procedures lack sufficient resolution to clarify some current theoretical uncertainties. Taking first the view that all theoretical approaches (whether constructed by statistical, finite difference, or continuum arguments) tend to reduce to the same model form as fixed by the number and nature of the disposable parameters, one notices that the "finite-stage" model of Deans1 is equivalent to the Coats and Smith so-called differential capacitance model for the pertinent case where a
