The two most widely used methods of measuring hardness are the Brinell and the scleroscope. In the Brinell method a hardened steel ball is pressed into the steel under a definite load and the area of the resulting depression is measured. The load in kg. per sq. mm. of the area of the depression is taken as a measure of the hardness. Within certain limits the hardness number so determined is independent of the load or the size of the ball. In the scleroscope method a small weight carrying a diamond point is dropped through a glass tube upon the steel and the amount of rebound is taken as proportional to the hard-' ness. In both methods the scale of hardness is an arbitrary one; however, they agree in a comparative may, that is, a steel showing 50 per cent. increase in hardness by the Brinell test mill show approximately 50 per cent. increase in hardness by the scleroscope test. Yet upon consideration of the two methods it appears that, upon a steel which has been carbonized, this should not be the case ; for the scleroscope method gives almost exclusively the surface-hardness, and the condition of the material below the surface has but a slight bearing upon the hardness number. The results given by the Brinell method should, however, be the exact opposite; for the depth of penetration 'of a ball pressed into the steel would be dependent to a large extent upon the condition of the material below the surface. This is particularly obvious when it is considered that the size of the ball ordinarily used in the Brinell method is 1 cm. (about 8 in.) in diameter under a load of 3,000 kg., while the diamond point of the scleroscope is in the neighborhood of 0.01 in. across, fitted in a hammer of about 0.5 oz. weight and dropping from a height of 10 inches.

The structural changes in metals brought about by annealing follow-ing a deformation at a low temperature has been the subject of many investigations. No less than eleven metals and alloys have been studied in some detail; namely, aluminum, tungsten,2 iron,3 copperI4 gold, zinc,6 cadmium, tin: lead: brass,1° and cupronickel. As a result, it is possible to frame a qualitative statement of the effect of the degree of deformation and the temperature of annealing on the structure finally attained.

THE purpose of this work has been to investigate recrystallization characteristics of zirconium after cold working and annealing. In order to do this, hafnium-contain ing crystal bars of Foote Mineral Co. iodide zirconium were selected for high purity. maximum diameter (about ½ in.), brightness of surface, and absence of core wire. A typical lot analysis is shown in Table I. In order to obtain uniformity of starting material, all bars were cold-swaged to 0.310 in. diam, annealed for 2 hr at 1000°C, and furnace cooled.

It has been repeatedly questioned whether estimates of oil reserves are of any practical value, as the greater number of such calculations previously made have subsequently been proved to be grossly inaccurate. But even admitting partial justification for such statements, it must be evident that some idea, however approximate, of the available reserves of essential minerals is of vital importance in mapping their development and the future trend of the related industries, particularly if it is kept constantly in mind that these estimates—which are never intended as a final word—must be continually subject to revision in accordance with the changes in their component factors. The value of these estimates, therefore, hinges on the clear understanding that they can only apply within the limited time when the controlling factors remain unchanged. It should be understood, however, that while estimates of possible and probable oil deposits are as a rule but idle conjectures, appraisals of proven oil reserves can undoubtedly be made with an ever-increasing degree of accuracy. And it is with this in mind that in the present study the endeavor has been to estimate only the world's proven oil reserves—the oil that yet remains underground in the producing fields—and their logical extensions, and to leave out of consideration the questionable volume of the probable and possible oil reserves. In Table 1 the countries at present producing oil in commercial quantities are listed in the order of the magnitude of their proven reserves. As shown in the table, the world's proven oil reserves are estimated at over 24 billion barrels, while the total production to the end of 1932 aggregates nearly 23 billions. Past production represents, therefore, 48 per cent, and proven reserves approximately 52 per cent of the total. About 61 per cent of the reserves are located in the American continent and close to 33 per cent in the Near East fields of Russia, Iraq and Persia. It is interesting to note that the proven reserves in the important producing regions almost equal if not exceed their production to date. The Mexican fields are a remarkable exception in this respect since they produced over 135 billion barrels and have proven reserves estimated at only 300 million barrels.

An increased drilling activity was apparent in the shallow sand fields of northwestern Pennsylvania during the year. This drilling, however, was confined to previously outlined productive areas and as new shallow sand pools of interest were discovered. Drilling for Oriskany gas proceeded at about the same rate as in previous years. One new area in Kinzua township, Warren County, was opened up during the year by a producing well, but later this well developed salt water and the productive capacities of the area are very indefinite at the present time. Production from the shallow sand areas remained approximately the same as in 1935. Production from the Oriskany or deep sand areas increased approximately 20 per cent. Two new markets were made available for the Oriskany gas during the closing months of the year by the completion of the Peoples Natural Gas Co. line from the Hebron field to Clarion County, Pa. and Penn York Gas Co. line from the Harrison field to points in northwestern New York State. With the exception of the Kinzua well, the few deep wildcat wells drilled during the year failed to discover new fields in the deep sands. Bradford Oil Field The accompanying data on the Bradford oil field include only the production obtained from the portion of that field that is in the State of Pennsylvania, for it appears probable that Cattaraugus County production, which consists mainly of the New York State portion of the Bradford field, will be included in annual oil production figures for New York State. The Bradford field production for 1936 totaled 14,533,000 bbl., and as it is necessary to estimate New York State production for the Bradford field, the accompanying data includes the production from the Pennsylvania end of the Bradford field of 13,208,000 bbl., which is an increase of approximately 8 per cent over 1935 production.

The ultimate resistance against a rigid cylinder which is moved laterally in a cohesionless soil is a function of the geometry of the cylinder and the properties of the soil. An approximate method is developed for computing this resistance and is tested against results of laboratory experiments. Satisfactory agreement between the method and experiment was obtained. Not only was the ultimate resistance against the cylinder measured, but measurements were made of the shape of the rupture surfaces. These measurements should allow the development of a more rigorous computation procedure. INTRODUCTION A critical aspect in the design of offshore drilling platforms is assuring the stability of the platform during a hurricane. The large horizontal loads from waves and wind make a severe loading condition. Piles are generally employed as the foundation since they can be effective in resisting both horizontal and vertical loads. Spuds are sometimes used with a mat foundation, where the spuds are designed principally to resist horizontal loads and the mat designed principally to resist vertical loads. The research reported in this paper is related to one aspect of the problem of laterally loaded piles or spuds in sand. The complete solution to the problem of the laterally loaded pile in sand would require the prediction of soil resistance against the pile as a function of pile deflection; only the ultimate resistance against short piles is considered in this paper. A considerable amount of additional research will be necessary in order to obtain a complete solution to the problem of the laterally loaded pile in sand; however, the work reported here should be useful as a guide in the performance of some of the additional research. ULTIMATE LATERAL RESISTANCE AGAINST A LONG FALL IN SAND To aid in the understanding of the theory which is developed for a cylinder, the theory for earth pressure against a wall is reviewed. In Fig. l(a), a long wall of height H is shown embedded in soil. Soil resistance will develop as the wall is deflected, and the soil resistance will increase with deflection until some limiting value is reached. In this discussion, and those following, it is assumed that all points on the wall deflect equal amounts. A possible shape of the real curve which relates soil resistance to deflection is shown by the dashed line in Fig. l(b); however, as a means of simplifying the discussion, an idealized curve (shown by the unbroken lines) is drawn. If such a wall as this were furnishing the horizontal support for an offshore structure, the dashed curve in Fig. 1 would be the information needed in performing a foundation analysis, with the idealized curve possibly being an acceptable substitute. Hunt, honorary member and twice president of the Institute, was made at the annual dinner of the Western Society of Engineers, in Chicago, on June 18, 1923, in the presence of 250 mem-bers and guests. W. L. Abbott, Chairman of the Award Commission, when delivering the presentation address, said The life of the Govern-ment of this country, as the lives of governments are usually measured, is short, barely 150 years, but meas-ured by what it has accom-plished, this country has reached a venerable age. The first 75 years of our country's existence were necessarily preparatory to the greater developments which came in the second, and that last half of our country's existence is ex-ceeded, by ten years, by the span of life of our honored guest. "Very little iron and steel were produced in this coun-try until after the birth of Robert W. Hunt. And it was not until after 1860, when as a boy of 21 he joined his fortunes with those of the Cambria Iron Works, that the iron and steel business of the country really took root. After a year or two with the Cambria Works, he left a promising position to go into the army, where he served for four years. After the close of the war he returned to the iron works and qualified himself as a metallurgical chemist.

INTRODUCTION The Kidd Creek Mine produces a total of 3.6 million tons annually. Geologically the orebody is complex, containing rich values of zinc, copper, silver and lead which are mined and milled as two separate "ore types". Production is mainly from highly mechanized sub-level open stopes of approximately 300,000 tons each. The Mine Engineering Department has developed, and now operates, a computer system that is the subject of this report. It was created specifically to aid the daily work of the mining engineer and has features that are new and possibly unique in the industry. DESIGN OBJECTIVES In 1971 a task force, set up to investigate the subject of computer assistance to mine engineering, specified four design requirements which it felt a successful application had to satisfy. They were:- 1) The computer had to offer a TOTAL SYSTEM that was fully integrated into the routine mine engineering function. 2) The computer had to be directly usable by the current engineering staff, the majority of which had received no formal training in computing.

The purpose of this paper is to present arguments and evidence that there are natural processes at work which tend to minimize the impact of solution mining on the environment. The contaminants have two sources. First are elements which were present in the roll-front deposit in insoluble compounds, for example, uranium in uraninite and coffinite, molybdenum, arsenic, iron, cobalt, nickel, etc. in sulfide minerals, vanadium in micas and clays, etc. Second are elements introduced by the leach liquor. Precipitation of reduced compounds, scavenging of heavy elements and absorption by quartz and clays, can all reduce the amount of heavy elements in solution. If a roll can be demonstrated to be actively precipitating uranium and heavy metal elements, then the presence of precipitants (pyrite and carbon) can be assumed. Criteria for recognizing an active roll are described.

FiRst I must express my deep appreciation for the honor of being privileged to give the Howe Memorial Lecture this year and at the same time my feeling of inadequacy to do justice to the subject. The first Howe lecturer was most fittingly, Professor Sauveur, his contemporary and friend, and the subject was beta iron. Last year the second Howe lecture was delivered by Dr. Mathews, one of his most distinguished pupils, who spoke on austenite. This year, the Howe Professor of Metallurgy was chosen to deliver the third annual lecture, and the subject ought to be martensite. No one but Professor Sauveur could have brought to life what was considered by many to have been dead and buried, and he so persuasively and convincingly proved to us by his experiments the existence of something that the followers of that new cult "X-Ray and Crystal Structure " would have us believe is simply alpha iron. And Dr. Mathews from his wide practical experience was so easily able to convince us that austenite was not only the most wonderful of the iron-carbon series, but that it was the wonder alloy of the future. If I were to follow in the footsteps of my distinguished predecessors, I would talk to you about martensite. But when I had planned this lecture, I found that I was writing about Professor Howe and his work and his influence on the science of metals of today, and that martensite had become the secondary theme. And when finally I was obliged to choose a title, I remembered that it was in 1901 I came from Roberts-Austen with a letter of introduction to his very dear friend, Henry Marion Howe, at the Columbia School of Mines, to continue my work at the next bench to Dr. Mathews. Since then a quarter of a century has gone by, and during that time all branches of science seem to have been remade, so great has been our advancement in knowledge and discovery. And now that Metallography has finally established its place as an important branch of science, with its own textbooks and literature, I would like to review what seem to me to be the most important advances we have made in the last 25 years. To do this, I would start with Howe's "Iron, Steel and Other Alloys," and end with Jeffries and Archer's " Science of Metals." In the preface of the former, Professor Howe wrote: My warmest thanks are due to the friends who have aided me with their counsel and knowledge. In the normal operation of a brass-rolling mill, sheet and strip has, for the most part, been finished in comparatively thin gauges, involving a substantial amount of cold-work and a considerable number of anneals. This condition has been disturbed by the preponderance of cartridge brass, which is not rolled to thin gauges, and particularly by brass for artillery cartridge cases, on which the mill may finish its work at a thickness between 0.400 and 0.900 in. Obviously, the amount of rolling and the number of anneals to which such a product can be subjected are small compared with strip that is carried to a thickness of a few hundredths of an inch. As a result, critical examination into the internal condition of metal has been made on an extensive scale at a stage of manufacture that would not, in normal times, have been chosen for complete inspection. Under these conditions, a type of defect has been recognized that is not seen at thinner gauges. It might be more accurate to call it the appearance of a defect, since it refers to an apparently laminated, discontinuous structure, which, in fact, does not exist as such, and disappears after suitable treatment. For this reason it has been called a phantom lamination, which the authors consider an appropriate term. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the phenomenon and the conditions of its occurrence and, at least tentatively, to discuss its nature and cause. Great numbers of phantoms may be found in 2:r brass, either hot-rolled or cold-rolled. They are also found in 70-30 brass, sometimes when hot-rolled and generally when cold-rolled. It is not believed that phantoms are confined to these alloys but this paper is limited to them for the purpose of description. Hot-rolled 2:1 Brass For illustration, therefore, a typical cake of hot-rolled 2:I brass has been chosen. This was rolled to a slab 36 in. thick, from a casting 5 in. thick by 24 in. wide by 18 in. high, which was believed to have been sound. After hot-rolling and cooling, the slab was sheared and a portion of such a shear cut is shown in Fig. I. It would be difficult to convince anyone viewing this specimen that the metal was not unsound. The impression would be confirmed by the appearance of a tensile break, as shown in Fig. 2. This is an ordinary tensile-test piece from metal just described. Although there was nothing in its tensile strength or elongation that suggested unsoundness, it appeared run through with pipes and laminations. To question the reality of such a condition would imply questioning the obvious. But, considering the history of the metal, it would be difficult to believe that it could be so bad as it appeared. It seemed reasonable, though, that if the defects were what they appeared to be, they could be traced back from the sheared or broken face.

Maintaining safe, yet economical, slope geometries in a mining operation is paramount. When design analysis and engineering judgement have dictated conservative and usually more expensive problem solutions, monitoring has often proven to be a valuable method in dealing with potential slope instability. A well planned and executed monitoring program can allow operation at a lower theoretical margin of safety. Monitoring provides a valuable check on design parameters and can measure effects of remedial improvements. Warning of impending failure can often be established well in advance. The monitoring problem situations in civil engineering works and open pit mining are much alike. Instruments used for monitoring in both industries are often the same. In this paper, geotechnical instruments for measuring deformation and groundwater pressure in rock and overburden are discussed with a broad-brush approach. Results obtained over extended time periods are presented in a graphical presentation for a case history. Descriptions of various types of instruments, mostly used to monitor stability of rock slopes, are discussed, and data analysis and approximate costs are presented.

IN 1945 tests were made in the coal washery of the Colorado Fuel and Iron Corporation, at Pueblo, Colo., to determine the value of the Humphreys spiral. So far we have demonstrated that it is of definite value to us in rewashing a portion of our table middlings; and we are fairly certain that this is not necessarily the only place in which it can be used to advantage. Because of manpower and material shortages, experimental work has been discontinued for the present. Three of the spirals are being installed for use in rewashing the middlings, and testing and experimental work will proceed when this installation is completed. All evidence secured so far points to the fact that the spiral can make an effective separation of heavy material below 8-mesh; but that it is ineffective in removing larger, heavy material. This, of course, will limit its use to fine coal or a classified feed containing no heavy material larger than 8-mesh. In considering the results of our tests, it should be noted that the feed was our table middling, and that any real separation of this material is a "moral victory," as there is little material that could be properly called coal and practically no heavy rock, the consequence being that previous attempts to clean the middlings have not been at all successful. Several articles dealing with the spiral and its use in treating heavy minerals have already been published,1 but for the benefit of those who have not seen these we include a brief description of the spiral and of the way it operates, taken from Bulletin 4 of The Humphreys Investment Co.: The Humphreys Spiral Concentrator consists of a spiral conduit of modified semicircular cross section. Ore pulp is fed to the top and, as it flows downward, the heavier particles concentrate in a band along the inner side of the pulp stream (Fig. I). Outlets for removal of products are located at the lowest points in the cross section of the conduit. Wash water, added at the inner edge of the stream, flows outwardly across the concentrate band. The width of concentrate band removed at the outlets is controlled by adjustable splitters. Concentrate is usually removed from the upper portion of the spiral and middling from the lower portion. Tailing is discharged from the lower end. Tests are usually made in closed circuit, since this provides a maximum of information with a minimum amount of sample. Fig. 2 shows the spiral set up for closed-circuit testing, and gives a good idea of the general arrangement of such an installation. The small cyclone separator is used to provide clean wash water without introducing additional water into the circuit.

It is shown that one cannot approximate the broad internal friction Peaks observed in the Fe-Mn-N system as the sum of a number of subsidiary Peaks and still vetain the concept of a single relaxation time. Furthermore, the approximation of manganese affectirg only nearest neighbor interstitial sites is shown to be incompatible with the experimental results. The results of this experiment show that the influence of manganese in the ferrite lattice extends over 3 to 4 atomic distances. NUMEROUS experiments have shown that the presence of relatively small amounts of substitutional alloying elements can profoundly affect the profile of the damping spectrum in the vicinity of the Snoek peak in bee metals.1-7 Dijkstra and Sladekl observed this phenomenon in Fe-Mn-N alloys where it appeared as a broadening and shifting of the Snoek peak to higher temperatures. The authors interpreted this as being the result of a superposition of two damping maxima—the normal Snoek peak, located at its usual position and having a normal half-width, and an interaction peak having a normal half-width, but occurring at a somewhat higher temperature. They prclposed that the interaction peak was caused by nitrogen atoms jumping from Fe-Mn sites to Fe-Fe sites, the Fe-Mn interstitial sites having one manganese and one iron atom as nearest neighbors, and the Fe-Fe sites having two iron atoms as nearest neighbors. They further suggested that the Fe-Mn sites had a lower energy than the normal Fe-Fe sites because of the presence of the adjacent manganese atoms. Beginning the year 1938, the East and East Central Texas district comprised 48 counties, which is equivalent to the Texas Railroad Commission districts 5 and 6. At the close of the year there were 46 oil and gas fields in this district. Eight other fields, seven oil and one gas, have been abandoned. Exploratory Drilling During the year, 113 exploratory wells were drilled. Nine discoveries were made, five of which proved to be oil fields, three distillate, and one gas. Completions for the district were 2043 oil wells (distillate wells included), 36 gas wells and 163 dry holes. Exclusive of the East Texas field, the Marion County extension of the Rodessa field led the district in the number of completions during the year. Production and Proration All fields in the district produced a total of 182,369,484 bbl. of oil, a decrease of 12.57 per cent compared with the 208,594,453 bbl. produced during 1937. The East Texas field produced 148,189,913 bbl., which was 81.6 per cent of the district's production for 1938. November daily average oil production for the East and East Central district was 469,102 bbl. The estimated cumulative production to Jan. 1, 1939, for this district was 1,753,894,802 bbl. It is estimated that the East and East Central district produced 38.9 per cent of the state's total production for the year, which was 468,781,632 barrels. The decrease in 1938 production, as compared to that of 1937, in this district was partly due to the Saturday and Sunday shutdowns, 71 days for the year, which is equivalent to 19.45 per cent of the year. All fields in this district were affected by shutdowns except the Texas portion of the Rodessa field, which was shut in only during January and February. Experimental data are presented showing the influence of size consist and firing rate upon the performance of bituminous coal-fired, single-retort, industrial underfeed stokers. Size segregation, degradation, and distributor data are also included. The conclusion is reached that size consist of the fuel as fired, is a critical factor in its performance on this class of equipment.

THIS remarkable and well-known district lies about 320 miles south of Salt Lake City, in Washington County, near the Arizona border of the territory. It is now reached by the Utah Southern Railroad and its extension, and the last 100 miles are run by stages. These vehicles are called "jerkies" in the West, which name conveys a good idea of the comfort they afford, and the relief experienced when you alight. Arriving at Silver Reef, the main amp of the district, one sees at once that he stands where once a surging sen had its domain, marked now by heavy sandstone deposits of a red and white color. The town itself, a neat, clean, and orderly mining town, is encircled on the north by trachyte and granite mountains, skirting to the west. They are cut through in places by deep gorges, left US as the only brace of the force of former currents, which drained the adjoining territory to the north; and which when swelled and infuriated by tempests and cloud-bursts, took in their grasp the huge blocks of

Germany's crude oil production during 1935 totaled 3,007,711 bbl., an increase of 36.6 per cent over the 2,202,214 bbl. produced in 1934. The Nienhagen-Haenigsen field furnished 77 per cent of the total 1935 production. Cumulative production figures for Germany's two most important oil fields, Wietze and Nienhagen, show that during the period from 1872 to the close of 1935 the Wietze field produced 13,325,536 bbl. and the Nienhagen field 9,340,870 bbl. Table 1 gives statistics of German production since 1928, arranged both by fields and by oil provinces. Fig. 1 demonstrates the production of the various German fields since 1890. New Fields Discovered During 1935 five new fields came into production. The first of these, the Moelme-Hoheneggelsen field near Hanover, was opened up in April. This region has been sporadically drilled for oil since 1882, but not until 1935 was production on a commercial scale obtained. The oil comes from Mesozoic sandstones on the flanks of a shallow salt plug. Also during April, oil was found in commercial quantities in the Rhine valley at Forst, near Bruchsal. Tertiary and Mesozoic sandstones cut by faults of the Rhine Graben form the reservoir structures in this area. In July a wildcat well drilled on the Fallstein structure, a broad Triassic anticline near Halberstadt, came in as a producer from Permian (Zechstein) dolomite. In September commercial oil mas found at Gifhorn, near Braunschweig, in Wealden sandstones associated with a shallow, geophysically discovered salt plug. During the same month production was obtained at Heide, in Holstein, from the Permian Rotlie-gendes formation, in a structural high on which oil seepages have been known for years. Drilling Activities Published information indicates that during 1935 drilling totaled 574,000 ft., as compared with 436,000 ft. in 1934; 233,000 ft. in 1933 and 151,000 ft. in 1932.
