Introduction In recent years, the industries of the US have been caught between ever increasing environmental concerns and an increasing uncertainty in availability of fuel. An obvious solution is to use our vast reserve of coal by direct combustion or gasification. The problem involves development of a fuel that is environmentally acceptable for these purposes. In order to resolve this problem in the shortest period of time, it would be ideal if an existing technology could be modified to produce a clean fuel from coal. Shortly after World War II, the iron ore industry was compelled to develop a high quality ore from low grade resources. This need led to the development of the taconite industry which involved milling, concentrating, and pelletizing technologies. These technologies are now fully established and applicable to conversion of coal. This presentation introduces a process for converting high sulfur coal into carbonized composite pellets, which emit low quantities of sulfur and particulate matter and may be produced by employing proven elements of technology. The new product, a clean pellet fuel (HelifuelTM) was initially developed by McDowell-Wellman Co., a subsidiary of Helix Technology Inc., at their Dwight-Lloyd Research Laboratories

IT is generally recognized that the .addition of limited small amounts of various lead salts may aid the extracting power of the mill cyanide solution in the dissolution of silver from ores and in some cases may aid in the treatment of gold ores. Excess soluble lead compounds retard the dissolution of precious metals by the usual mill cyanide solution. Another phase of cyanidation is the use of the zinc-lead couple as an aid to better precipitation of gold and silver from solution containing a low percentage of cyanide. The chemistry of the use of lead salts in cyanidation has been dis-cussed by Clennell;1 the addition of lead salts in various cyanide mills is recorded by von Bernewitz;2 and the reasons for the use of lead salts in cyanidation have been explained by Clevenger.3 This paper deals with the adaptation of cyanidation to a different condition, in which the presence of lead minerals in a gold ore that is refractory to direct cyanidation complicates the treatment. If free gold is roasted in the presence of sulfur and lead salts, or if pyritic gold ores containing even a small percentage of lead minerals are roasted to free the gold from the pyrite, lead compounds coat the gold particles enough to make them almost insoluble in the usual mill cyanide solution contain-ing lime for protective alkalinity. Gold wires, 5 mil in diam, are found to creep viscously up to approximately 5.5x106 dynes per sq cm around 1300°K. Beyond this point, an additional slip mechanism appears. The average coefficient in the viscous range at these temperatures is 18.9 ± 7x10 12 poises. This observation and other visual observations made during the experiments agree with Herring's predictions. EARLY creep studies by Chalmers on single crystals of tin produced some of the first experimental evidence to suggest that metals deform viscously under very light stresses. That is to say, over a small initial stress range up to 150 g per sq mm, the single crystals of tin elongated at a rate proportional to the stress. The proportionality constant between strain rate and stress is by definition the coefficient of viscosity. Chalmers named this range of proportionality the microcreep range. One of the first theoretical attempts to explain the microcreep phenomenon was given by Kauzman,' who applied Eyring'sQ eneral statistical mechanical theory of shear rates to creep data then available. From the rate theory, he deduced the general hyperbolic sine law for shear rate on the assumption that the distortion of the reaction path due to stress is negligible and that the system is an infinite continuum. In order to fit the available data to the equation, it was necessary to assume that creep occurs by shear of rather large blocks of material, rather than by an atomistic shear process as in diffusion. The size of the shear units was shown to increase with increasing temperatures and lower stress, or lower strain rates. In applying the hyperbolic sine law equation to the microcreep data of tin, it was shown by Kauzman that the unit shear blocks became quite small, which suggested to him that microcreep might be a self-diffusion process. Making this an assumption, Kauz- man reworked the rate theory and arrived at an equation where the shear rate is proportional to the stress. In the form of viscosity coefficient, the equation is: o- _ \LkT V = 2qAlA where u is the stress; S, the shear rate; X, the distance in shear direction moved by flow units relative to one another in the unit process; L, the distance between layers of units of flow; T, the absolute temperature; k, Boltzmann's constant; qAL, a constant proportional to the size of flow units; and kT A, the diffusion coefficient = ------kTe-Q/RT = K X2 h Kauzman applied the expression to molten lead with a fair degree of success, the calculated viscosity being low by a factor of four. For solid lead the result is 5000 times too high. Taking q = 1, and X = dA = L = 21 = nearest neighbor distance, Udin, Shaler and Wulff8 found the equation low by a factor of lo7 for solid copper. On the basis of the discrepancy in lead, Kauzman indicated that microcreep is probably not a simple diffusion process of molecular shear units, but one involving preferential diffusion paths, or even that diffusion in solids does not involve shear at all. Cottrell and Jaswon4 treat the microcreep phenomenon on the basis of slow moving dislocations and apply it to Chalmers' data on tin with fair success. Nabarro Suggested a microcreep model in which mass movement in the direction of pull is effected by the diffusion of holes. Nothing has disturbed the copper- lead-zinc producers in recent years more than smelter tolerances set by some states. What hurt most, copper spokesmen told the Government, was the Government's own erroneous estimates of smelter pollution controls. Government charts indicated that 23 firms smelting copper, lead and zinc may need to invest about $108 million by fiscal 1976 to control stack emissions. The copper industry's independent study, however, indicates that the required controls could cost as much as $550 million to install and $200 million a year to operate.

IN a laboratory devoted to the furtherance of the science of communication, the breadth and variety of the problems encountered are challenging to a metallurgist. In my own long association with the Bell Telephone Laboratories, our metallurgical group has dealt with a vast number of alloys, both ferrous and nonferrous, and with many materials in the border range of metallic properties., The objectives of our design engineers embrace every phase of telephony, and the properties they desire in metals are generally unusual, frequently unique, and often conflicting. Commercial alloys have not always been available with properties to meet a special requirement in the telephone plant, and many alloys have had, therefore, to be custom-made. Anyone who has had the opportunity to observe the results of tests of all types on numerous such alloys, both commercially and specially produced, or who has taken part in the development of an alloy of some necessary, but new or unusual combination of properties, could not fail to be impressed by the frequency with which a desired goal has been reached or adequately approached through the presence of decimal quantities of alloying elements. Nor could One fail to be struck by the occasions when, conversely, of a minute amount Of impurity element has rendered an alloy useful. It is no exaggeration to state that the content be- hind the decimal point often spells success or fail-ure, and the critical content is sometimes far to the right of the decimal point as I shall later illustrate. The great effects of small additions have long been recognized and have, in fact, been described by many investigators. The importance of the minute, however, cannot be overemphasized. Therefore, in this discussion, I propose to illustrate for you some of the startling instances, drawn primarily from our own experiences, wherein small, even vanishingly small, proportions of stranger elements in otherwise common aggregates have com-pletely changed the customary pattern of behavior. No one property has a monopoly as to being dis-proportionately affected by minor elements. Nearly all properties are affected, but there is time here to include only a selected few. I have chosen, there-fore, three of general interest: strength, magnetic, and electrical properties. I shall inquire into both the mechanisms and consequences of these disproportionate effects and try to share with you the fascination and challenge of this field. Strength Properties of Lead and Lead Alloys To illustrate the effect of the minute on strength properties I have selected lead and its alloys, with which we have worked extensively for many years. Lead has the advantages of being available in quantity in a state of high purity and of being fairly easy to melt and fabricate without contamination to any extent detectable by the spectrograph. THE spheroidal form of the temper carbon nodules in malleable cast iron and of the graphite mottles of "mottled" cast iron suggests that in both all the graphite in a given mottle or nodule grew from a single center of crystallization or nucleus. ? There is, however, a distinct metallo-graphic difference between the mottle and the nodule; the area of mother metal impoverished in combined carbon by the crystallization of graphite in a mottle is practically coextensive with the ramifications of the graphite, while the impoverished zone of metal corresponding to a given nodule is always larger, and usually much larger, than the approximately spherical mass of graphite crystals forming the nodules. Furthermore, the mottle probably is formed during freezing and the nodule almost always at a considerably lower temperature. Assuming that the nodules or mottles can be used as a measure of the existing nuclei (capable of germination) we propose to record certain observations as to the graphitizing reaction in the light of the number and habits of growth of these nuclei. The present authors, in cooperation with others1-7, have reported upon various cognate aspects of the problem. Compacting below the recrystallization temperature was studied. Ideal density was attained at 550° to 600°C using 25 tsi. Compacts have strength and hardness higher than cold worked beryllium. The recrystallization temperature of this highly stressed metal is that of cast, cold worked beryllium and appears independent of pressing temperature. THE process metallurgy of beryllium is beset by many difficulties that hinder the production of sound beryllium shapes of controlled properties. Most of these obstacles are traceable directly to the low density, low ductility, and high affinity for oxygen of the metal. Castings are susceptible to cracking and porosity, and controlled grain size is not easily attained, yet is critical to further working. Any process must carefully avoid oxygen pickup. Conventional metallurgical processes, including melting, casting, forging, rolling, and extruding have been treated previously,'" as have the conventional powder metallurgical methods.' More recently, a method has been advanced for producing powder compacts of high density by hot pressing at 1000" to 1100°C, using pressures of 0.25 to 0.5 tons per sq in. (tsi).3 Here, Seybolt and coworkers attained theoretical density of 1.85 grams per cc using pres-sure-temperature combinations of 500 psi-1100°C, 750 psi-1075"C, and higher. The warm pressing of beryllium is a practical method for producing bars of controlled properties and appears to have certain advantages, particularly when high strength and hardness are required. Other investigators have studied the hot pressing of various pure metals, such as copper,"-" gold," iron,10-11 and aluminum." Y.:—Mr. Hewett's paper is one of exceptional interest, because it not only adds an important contribution regarding one of the rarer, valuable elements, but also because it introduces compounds hitherto unknown and in associations no less novel. While we have occasionally discovered and recorded asphaltite in metalliferous deposits, for example in the Joplin and Granby districts, we have not seen a metallic ore in a deposit eesentially asphaltite. The source and method of introduction afford a subject well worth serious reflection.

Confirmation of the relationship noted above was provided by fitting experimental stress-strain data5 for 304 stainless steel (total strain from 0.072 to 1.15) at room temperature at a true total strain rate of 4 x 10-3 sec-1 to Eqs. [I] and [3]. In this study nonlinear regression analyses were used to evaluate the equation constants. The results of this evaluation are presented in Table I. When these constants are used in Eqs. [I] and [3] the curves obtained are coincident. It will also be noted that the value of n is equal to YE,, the value of a is equal to so, and the value of b is equal to (s8 - so)/Ec. These equalities are illustrated in Table I where the Voce constants in parentheses were calculated from a, b, and n values. Excellent agreement is seen to exist. It is concluded, therefore, that the Voce equation is, indeed, identical to the linear expression involving generalized strain. In applying the generalized strain concept to stress-strain data, it has been noted3 that data within what was termed the transition region (first few points in the plastic flow region) must be excluded from the analysis in order to obtain the linearity in Eq. [3]. A similar exclusion applies in the use of the Voce equation since an expression which would describe the strain-hardening region would usually be found to be not too effective in the elastic-plastic fillet2 which connects the elastic line to the strain-hardening region. These considerations further substantiate that Eqs. [I] and [3] do indeed describe identical behavior. Note added in proof. Since this manuscript was submitted for publication, correspondence with Professor S. R. Davies, University of Edinburgh, (of Ref. 3) indicated that his associates have also confirmed the identity between the Voce equation and the generalized strain concept. It is sometimes desirable to obtain a small grain size in super-purity metals. Unfortunately, the absence of impurities, the low recrystallization temperatures, and the low activation energies for boundary motion result in rapid growth of relatively few grains when conventional recrystallization practices are used. For example, Arajs et al.1 were unable to obtain a mean grain diameter less than about 0.4 mm in iron containing 38 at. ppm of impurity. The <1 at. ppm purity range in many modern superpurity metals results in yet larger limiting grain sizes. It is the purpose of this communication to describe a technique by which mean grain diameters as small as 30 µ have been produced in aluminum having an impurity content < 0.5 at. ppm. The technique should be applicable to superpurity metals other than aluminum and has potential applications to grain refinement of commercial alloys. The necessary and sufficient requirements for production of a small grain size are as follows: a) a large number of potential nucleating sites must be created randomly within the cold worked material, b) sufficient thermal energy must be provided at a rate that will simultaneously activate a large fraction of the potential nuclei, and c) the grain growth must be stopped shortly after grain impingement.&apos; A high density of potential grain nuclei may be cre-

The "free form life," The Wall Street Jourlzal called it. That is what the young people are practicing who have dropped out after successfully completing a college education. The ones described were first-rate students who did not embark on careers but instead selected such nonintellectual jobs as delivering mail, short- order cooking and the like. We couldn&apos;t help thinking that it wasn&apos;t so long ago, that we had the ideal setup in mining for folks of this persuasion when most college grads were started out as muckers. Actually there isn&apos;t much new in this business of doing your own thing. Being a type that takes westerns seriously, we jumped at the chance to catch the rerun of the wide-screen flick "How the West Was Won." There was Jimmie Stewart playing the part of the mountain man, with a canoe full of furs going east down river. Coming west up river, is a settler with his daughters. This mountain man had on his fringed buckskins, his two-year growth of long hair and a tremendous thirst. He had been doing his thing and planned to keep right on doing it. However, one of the pretty settler girls had other ideas. The same fate probably awaits today&apos;s individualistic youths.

The martensitic transformation can be initiated by elastic stresses at temperatures above M. in a steel containing 20 pct Ni and 0.5 pct C. Shear strains and normal tensile strains acting on a potential habit plane promote the transformation but compressive strains oppose it. THE strain sensitivity of the martensitic transformation has long been recognized. It is now well known that martensite formation can be induced by plastic deformation at temperatures below, and not too far above, the M, point.&apos; However, the exact role of elastic vs. plastic strains and of the concomitant stresses has proved to be a very elusive matter. Many investigators2-&apos; of the steel hardening reaction have made use of the stresses resulting from volume changes to account for such observations as the existence of retained austenite and its variation across the section of a bar, the change in the amount of retained austenite with quenching rate, and the self-stopping nature of the transformation when the cooling is stopped. The effect of applied strain as an independent variable has been studied in 70 pct Fe-30 pct Ni alloys by Scheil7 and McReynolds.8 Some data are also available for lithium and Li-Mg alloys,9 Cu-Zn,10 Cu-Sn and Cu-A1 alloys," and aus-tenitic stainless steels."-" It has been found that martensite formation can be induced isothermally, even at temperatures above M,, by mechanical deformation of the parent phase. The competitive nature of plastic yielding by slip and by the martensitic reaction has been depicted by Scheil.7 Basically, Scheil postulated that: 1—at temperatures not too far above M, (where austenite is less stable than martensite), a critical resolved shear stress (within the elastic range) is required to promote the transformation to martensite; 2—at and below M,, the austenite lattice becomes mechanically, as well as thermodynamically, unstable and shears over spontaneously into martensite without the application of external stress; and 3—at temperatures sufficiently far above M8, the critical resolved shear stress for martensite formation increases to a level above that required for slip, and plastic flow then supersedes the transformation when external stress is applied. Scheil&apos;s concepts were tested by McReyno1ds8 ho found no change in the elastic moduli (measured both statically and dynamically) of 71 pct Fe-29 pct Ni alloys in the vicinity of the M, temperature. Since the moduli did not approach zero or become negative on cooling to M,, it was concluded that the austenite lattice does not become mechanically unstable at M2, as postulated by Scheil. McReynolds also reported that M, is not raised by elastic stresses. Accordingly, plastic deformation was considered to stimulate the transformation by generating martensite nuclei in the distorted regions of the parent phase. The above issues with regard to the role of applied stress require clarification, if a basic understanding of the martensitic transformation is to be obtained. For example, in the reaction-path theory,&apos;"," it is postulated that strain embryos exist in the austenite that provide part of the activation energy for the nucleation process. These embryos are visualized to be regions of localized strain in which the atoms in the austenite lattice are displaced part way along the path to their ultimate positions in the martensite. The adsorption mechanism of corn starch and its derivatives at mineral-solution interfaces was investigated by the adsorption of cationic starch, unmodified corn starch, British Gum 9084, and anionic starch on quartz and hematite. The adsorption of these starches, which decreases in the order mentioned, is dependent on the balance between the magnitude of the electrostatic interaction and the magnitude of the hydrogen bonding. There exists a critical starch concentration for both optimum flotation and flocculation conditions of iron ores, which corresponds to a point where the starch adsorption reaches a saturation coverage. Flocculation occurs due to the adsorption of starch via electrostatic and hydrogen-bonding forces and by interparticle bridging as a result of the conformation of starch molecules at the interface. The depressant property of starches and starch derivatives in flotation&apos; and their flocculation char: acteristics in clarification and filtration2.3 have long been recognized on a wide variety of ores. The effectiveness of a starch as a depressant for iron minerals has been the subject of much investigation in recent years both in the amine flotation of siliceous gangue and in the anionic flotation of activated silica from iron ores. It has been reported that the depressant activity of starches and dextrins in the cationic flotation of quartz from hematite increases with molecular weight, branching, and number of hydroxyl groups, 1 and that the selectivity is affected by changing the configuration of starch molecules and the composition of its polar groups.4 ,5 The manner in which starches are solubilized was shown to exert a significant influence as a depressant in the anionic silica flotation, and a series of articles covering the practical aspects of flotation and flocculation have already been reported.618 Chemical modification of the starch structure, the pulp pH, the calcium ion, and the residual starch concentration were identified as some of the more important variables affecting the flotation behavior. In the flocculation of iron ores, it was noted that most starches flocculated suspensions of hematite in water but did not flocculate similar suspensions of quartz,9 and that an excessive use of starch restabilized the suspensions due presumably to protective action. 6 An admirable application of such an observation to practice may be cited in the selective flocculation and desliming in the anionic silica flotation of iron ores, which resulted in superior metallurgy and lower reagent cost. 10 From detailed adsorption measurements, Schulz&apos;and Cooke4 established that the adsorption of starches and their derivatives depended on the types of minerals and of starches, pH, and electrolytes present. Their adsorption data and the foregoing flotation and flocculation observations suggested that an electrical interaction between starches and charged mineral surfaces might be playing a role in their adsorption process. Adsorption of organic polymers, particularly of synthetic origin, at solid-liquid interfaces has been extensively studied in recent years,&apos; and it is realized that their adsorption mechanism is considerably more complex than that of simple ions or molecules. A polymer molecule possesses a number of functional groups, and the adsorption at a point may restrict the adsorbability of adjacent groups. The mechanism may be further complicated by the conformation of the polymer molecules which may exist as coiled spheres, helices, or extended chains as a result of intramolecular interactions among functional groups as well as intermolecular interactions with solvent molecules. The object of the present investigation was to examine the effect of the chemical modification on the adsorption characteristics of starches and starch products on quartz and hematite at several pH values, so that by correlating this information with flocculation and flotation results, adsorption mechanism of starches on mineral-solution interface may be elucidated. EXPERIMENTAL MATERIALS Quartz: St. Peter sand was screened at 35 mesh and the undersize was scrubbed and deslimed at a Fagergren cell. The influence of the stress dependence of the dislocation density on the overall stress dependence of The steady-state creep rate is discussed. Experimental measurements of dislocation densities and creep rates jor an Fe-3.1 pct Si alloy tested over a wide range of stress are presented which indicate a close correlation between the two quantities. EXPRESSING the stress dependence of high-temperature steady-state creep rates has been the subject of numerous investigations over the past decade. From these investigations have emerged a few general equations which fit most of the available data reasonably well. Garofalo 1 has proposed that for a wide range of stress and temperature the creep rate, i, can be expressed by a relationship of the form: where A, ß, and n are temperature-dependent and is the applied stress. Eq. [I] gives a stress dependence of a at low stresses and exp(nßo) at high stresses, both consistent with experimental observation where n = 5. A number of other investigatorshave proposed a similar expression where: where m and w are in general functions of temperature. Theoretical justification for Eqs. 111 and [2J comes from two different approaches, theories based on dislocation glide3-5 and theories based on the balance between work-hardening and recovery.&apos; Dislocation glide theories predict where p is the mobile dislocation density and V is the activation volume. In order for Eq. [3] to predict a on stress dependence at low stresses with n = 5, it is necessary for p to be a strong function of stress, about proportional to u3 or u4.436 Recovery models of creep start with the general expression:&apos; where r is the recovery rate and h is the work-hardening rate, and then employ a detailed model to determine the stress dependencies of r and h. As example, weertman2 has described a model based on pile-up hardening which results in an expression similar to Eq. [2] with m = 2 and p = 2.5. A recent, seemingly more general approach suggested by McLean is to use Friedels dislocation network growth expression to calculate the stress dependence of r. This model predicts r = p 3,2 and, as h is taken to be a relatively weak function of stress, the stress dependence of i should be about proportional to p3, 2. A detailed study of texture developmenf in poly crystalline copper atzd 70-30 brass has been completed. Textural changes as a function of deformation are shoum by pole jigmres and by intensity measurements oF- various rejlectiotzs from the rolling plane and the rolling direction. These examinations were accompanied by measurements of stacking fault frequency, hardness changes, and microstructure. Some of the results were briefly presented earlier. Additional results reported here are consistent with the idea that deformation faulting or slip by partial dislocations is of primary importance in the formation of deformation textures in fcc metals. lo examine the idea that deformation faulting is of primary importance in determining whether the texture is the copper type or the brass type an extensive study of the development of polycrystalline textures in copper and 70-30 brass was initiated. Besides the determination of complete pole figures, the intensities of the various reflections from both the rolling plane and the plane perpendicular to the rolling direction, the peak shifts due to deformation stacking faults, and the hardness of the rolled specimens were examined at various reductions from 10 to 99 or 99.5 pct. Mi-crostructures were examined by transmission electron microscopy. Some of the results were briefly presented in an earlier publication.&apos; Since then, additional information has been obtained. This is given in the present paper. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Material and Specimen Preparation. The material used was a commercial electrolytic copper bar 1i in. wide and 2 in. thick and a 70-30 brass bar la in. wide and 1i in. thick. Chemical analysis indicated a purity of 99.97 pct for the copper, with 0.025 pct 0 as the major impurity. The 70-30 brass was of higher purity with 0.0016 pct 0 as the major impurity. Extreme care was taken in the preparation of the starting material to insure uniformly fine grains with a nearly random initial texture. The two bars were first cold-forged and then annealed to eliminate any original texture. The grains were then refined by several cold rolling (approx 30 pct reduction) and annealing treatments. The + -hr anneals were carried out in a salt bath at 390" to 440°C for copper and at 490°C for brass. The resulting penultimate grain size was 0.06 mm for copper and 0.03 mm for brass, and both showed very little preferred orientation. The number of prior cold rolling and annealing cycles was such that the final thickness after various final reductions of 10 to 95 (for brass) or 99 (for copper) pct was the same (0.020 in.). These annealed strips were rolled in two directions by reversing end for end between passes according to the following schedule: 0.006 in. per pass to 0.100 in., 0.003 in. per pass to 0.050 in., 0.002 in. per pass to 0.025 in., 0.001 in. per pass to 0.020 in. Texture Determination. The development of rolling textures was studied by examining complete pole figures determined from the (111) reflection. Specimens thinned from one face of the strip to half thickness (0.010 in.) were used to obtain the central portion of the pole figures, while specimens thinned from both faces to 0.003 in. were used to obtain the peripheral portion. The reflection and transmission techniques have been described previously. In addition to X-rav pole figures, texture development was also studied b; examining the intensity variation of the (Ill), (200), (2201, (311), (331), (420), and (442) reflections from the rolling plane and from the plane normal to the rolling direction, as a function of deformation. The same specimens used for the central portion of the pole figures were used for the intensity measurements of the various reflections from the rolling plane. For intensity measurements from the plane normal to the rolling direction, composite specimens were prepared by mounting sections cut parallel to the transverse direction of the strip. An epoxy resin was used to bond these sections together, and the entire composite was then mounted in a cold-setting resin to facilitate subsequent polishing and etching to remove distorted metal at the cut. The intensities were expressed in units of the integrated intensities measured from an annealed copper specimen having almost no preferred orientation. Stacking Fault Frequency Determination. Following the analysis of Warren: the stacking fault frequency, a, was determined from the change in the peak separation (A%) of two neighboring reflections of a deformed specimen, as compared with the normal peak separations of a fully annealed specimen. To obtain sufficient intensities for the second-order reflections, (222) and (400), composite specimens were prepared from parallel sections cut from the strip at 30 deg to the rolling direction for copper and 25 deg for the brass.* From texture data, these sections are known to contain a large population of both (111) and (200) planes. Since residual stresses can also cause X-ray line shifts (the direction of line shifts depends upon the sign of the stress), the use of composite specimens consisting of sectioned planes should help compensate for these effects as the residual stresses change sign from the surface to the central section of a rolled strip. The following abstract of an unpublished treatise, prepared by me, on the geological formations and minerals of the State of Alabama, is deemed of interest to the Institute. This State, called after the river of the same name (which, formed by the junction of the Coosa and the Tallapoosa, waters, with its tributaries, more than half the State), is divided by its main watershed into a larger southern district, sloping south and southwest, and drained into the Gulf of Mexico, and a smaller northern district, sloping generally north and west, and drained into the Tennessee. Geologically the State may be divided (according to historical geology) according to the different formations it exhibits, among which I include the Azoic, the existence of which in Alabama has been doubted by some; or it may be divided (according to structural geology, as closely related to topography) into a north and northwestern, a middle, and a southern zone.

Discussion of the paper of L. A. DELANO, presented at the St. Louis meeting, October, 1917, and printed in Bulletin No. 129, September, 1917, pp. 1267 to 1286. L. A. DELANO.-Since this paper was written, our daily mill tonnage has increased, from 2100 tons to 2700 tons a clay. We now use 11,000 lb. of chrome-steel balls of 2 ½ -in. maximum diameter, for an average crushing capacity of 275 tons per 24 hr., this giving a much higher crushing efficiency. I wish to call attention to two typographical errors in my paper as published. On page 1271, Table 1, the screen analysis of ore at the Bonne Terre mill should be stated in inches instead of mesh. - On page 1272, "the rolls average 185 tons per 24 hr., and have shown by test that 250 tons per hour can be maintained" should, of course, read "250 tons per 24 hours." THE CHAIRMAN (0. M. BILHARZ, Miami, Okla.).-Is the increased mill capacity due to improvement in the re-crushing of middlings or to keeping middlings out of circulation and treating them separately? L. A. DELANO.-AS was shown in Mr. Rabling&apos;s paper (Bulletin No. 128, p. 1161) the tonnage was raised by about 400 tons by simply changing the arrangement of screen openings in the jig bed and using punched plate instead of woven-wire screen. Then, by adding a ball-mill, we are taking from the jigs a much larger tonnage of middlings than before or as much as the ball-mill will crush. By sending the ball-mill product to tables and flotation, the jig capacity for original ore is increased. CHAIRMAN BILHARZ.-In your opinion, the satisfactory operation of a Hancock jig on a given ore requires adjustment of the length of the different screens and careful selection of screen openings? L. A. DELANO.-I think it does. In order to decide what screen openings to use on the jigs, we did a great deal of experimental work, making screen analyses of the various hutch products, and then hand-sorting the galena, middlings and chat from each size screen to determine the percentage of galena in each. Then adjusting our jig screens, we gradually worked the process up to a very efficient basis. This establishment being now in full working order, it has seemed of considerable professional interest to collect together, in a concise form, the various points as to its plan, method of dressing, and equipment. The data contained in this paper have been largely drawn from the able paper of E. Kutscher, constrnoting engineer of the works, contained in the Zeitschrift fur Berg-HÜtten-und Salinenwesen im Preussischen Staate, 1873, supplemented by some personal memoranda made while the works were under construction and by memoranda on the works appearing in various German technical papers from their completion up to date. This is probably the largest dressing works in the world devoted to the beneficiation of argentiferous lead ores, and it is doubtful if any establishment for the concentration of mineral of any description can compare with it in size. As showing the final practice adopted in an old and very conservative mining region, in which the concentration of ores has been a matter of constant practice and experiment for a very long period, these works are of peculiar interest. The fact that the Clausthal ores strongly resemble a very large and abundant class of ores found in the United States has always attracted the attention of American mining engineers and mine owners to the methods employed in dressing and smelting them. The study of their methods of concentration of ores has, however, always been full of difficulty,
