SINCE Dr. St. Albans, in 1840, began to build successful watertube boilers—some of which are still in use—the gravity-return water-tube boiler has been built in many forms, more or less familiar to all who have studied the subject. A single firm in this country published recently a pamphlet, showing some fourteen modifications of their boiler during about as many years. The present case history deals with the examination of an almost forgotten nickel prospect, near Winesap, Chelan County, Washington. Although the final results yielded no ore body of commercial importance, the integration of surface and underground exploration, geophysical survey and diamond drilling endow the story with interest. The program is significant because it is illustrative of how the most disappointing expenditures in mining exploration, the "not-finding" costs, could have been reduced had geophysical methods been applied at an appropriate stage in the prospecting work. The Chelan nickel deposit was discovered about 1900, on a sage-brush-covered hillside with a southerly slope, adjacent to Winesap Canyon; the paved highway now extending from Wenatchee northward, up the Columbia River and into Okanogan Valley, is only a mile away. After the deposit was found, three short prospect tunnels were driven into it, and the prospect then remained dormant for 40 years. No. x tunnel was 80 ft. long, running north into the hillside. For the first 35 ft. this adit exposed a typical, iron-stained gossan with streaks and stains of malachite, and small seams of water-soluble nickel sulphate. Beyond this, it encountered a relatively fresh peridotite, well mineralized with blebs of pentlandite. Systematic sampling yielded an average assay of 1.5 per cent nickel and 0.3 per cent copper. Down the hillside to the south and 35 ft. lower in elevation, No. 2 tunnel was driven under No. I and in the same direction, traversing 50 ft. of gneiss before it reached the peridotite. At this point the latter formation showed only scattered blebs of sulphides, not of commercial grade. To the west, on the same contour line as No. I tunnel, and 800 ft. around the hillside from it, No. 3 tunnel was driven 50 ft. into the hill to explore a strong gossan outcrop that assayed 0.5 per cent nickel (Fig. I). From the geological exposures on the hillside and in the tunnels, it appears that the main mass of the hill is formed of an ancient and altered gneiss complex. Into this, a sill-like injection of amphibolite (altered peridotite) was intruded, which, at least in some places, contains commercial quantities of nickel sulphide. Its structure is obscure, but it appears to dip into the hill at an angle of about 15°. In the vicinity of No. 3 tunnel a large dike of quartz diorite cuts the peridotite or amphibolite; about 140 ft. north of the portal of the tunnel, a dike of andesite 00 ft. wide cuts boldly up the hillside to break the continuity of the peridotite in that direction. The geological evidence available was not adequate to decide whether the peridotite forms a continuous sill, or occurs as isolated bodies in the gneiss. A study of the literature shows that the greater part of research work on annealing of cold-worked iron has been for the purpose of studying the effect on grain-size and properties other than hardness. No reference has been found of experimental work of the same nature as that explained in this short paper. The material used throughout was Vismera iron, an iron containing 0.03 carbon and made several years ago by the Inland Steel Co. One-half inch stock was cut into cylinders % in. long. To the successful functioning of the geomagnetic method of exploration in engineering and geological practice there are two prime prerequisites : the measurability and the interpretability of significant magnetic anomalies. A magnetic anomaly may be defined as a permanent distortion of the earth's magnetic field, in order to distinguish it frog the distortions, either cyclic or irregular, which vary with time. So far as known, time fluctations have no directly assignable geologic significance in terms of rock formations, while anomalies may be considered to be directly caused by the difference in the magnetic properties within and between the formations of the substances that make up the earth's outer shell. As is effectively pointed out by L. B. Slichter,1 the effects which these differences produce on the magnetic field may be extremely minute or extremely great, depending upon the magnetic properties of the formations. Thus the actual anomalies may range from the infinitesimal to a magnitude considerably greater than that of the earth's field. The geomagnetic method of exploration has shared in the deluge of experimental effort which has lately swept geophysical prospecting to its present important place in engineering and geologic practice. But to date more of this effort has been expended upon the measurability of anomalies than upon their interpretability. The tendency has been to strive for the development of instruments and especially field techniques capable of measuring minute anomalies with a precision far beyond that for which there can be any hope of adequate interpretation other than as interesting phenomena having numerous possible causes. Such efforts, of course, are highly commendable in the field of so-called pure science, which includes the accumulation of undigested detailed observations and admits of interpretation by multiple hypotheses, but in engineering practice the factor of economy must enter. Those instruments and techniques are most desirable which can most rapidly measure the interpretable range of anomalies with the precision necessary

The effect of transitiorz element bitzary solid solution additions upon the recrystallization temperature of columbium has been investigated. The elements Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, W, Re, and 0s OWY the yecystallization tempel-aturye, while Ti, V, CY, zr, Mo, Ru, Rh, Pd, Hf, Ta, W, Ir, and Pt mise it. A correlation is kloted between the rate of chatzge of recyystallization tewaperature with atomic hercent solute and the free atom electron configuration of the solute element. The work of Abrahamson and Grant1 has indicated a correlation between the free atom ground-state electron configuration and the change in brittle-ductile transition temperature per atomic percent solute in chromium base alloys. A similar correlation was observed for the change in the recrystallization temperature of iron base alloys by Abrahamson and Blakeney and Abrahamson. It was also observed that the limit of rapid change in recrystallization temperature also Correlated with the electronic configuration of the free solute atom. A further study by Abrahamson4 established the generality of the phenomenon by yielding similar results for vanadium base dilute alloys. It has been inferred that a peri- odicity might be expected with changes in the free atom electron configuration of the solvent element. This study is the third set of transition base metal systems to be studied. It is the object of this and further studies on transitional metal systems to detect any systematic variations in the observed correlation which might contribute to the understanding of the electron interactions which are evidently exhibiting themselves. PROCEDURE All alloys were made using 99.9 pct Cb with 0.030 Ta, 0.016 0, 0.0025 H, 0.003 Mo, 0.021 Fe, 0.005 C, and 0.002 N. The solute elements were 99.9 pct pure. According to the published binary phase diagrams5 and metallographic examinations at X750, all additions were in solid solution. The alloys were arc melted and remelted 6 times in the form of cubic 400-g buttons under an argon atmosphere. They were then hot forged at 1200oC to 0.6-in. diameter, annealed for 3 hr at 1200o under argon, and furnace cooled. The specimens were then machined to 0.400 -in. diameter. Grain size was checked and found to remain essentially constant at 150 i 30 grains per sq mm. The specimens were then cold swaged to 0.187-in. diameter, yielding 46 i 1 pct cold work. All alloys were chemically analyzed for the major solute. Analyses of random samples indicated that the impurity content remained at the values of the starting material. Tungsten contamination was held to 0.007 pet.

During the 1920's, approximately 11,000 small gasifiers were in operation in the United States. They converted about 15 million tons (13.6 Mt) of coal per year into low Btu gas. In some cases, hot raw gas was used for applications such as firing open hearth furnaces or brick kilns. In other cases the gases produced in the gasifiers were cooled, cleaned and desulfurized for various utility and industrial purposes. The steel industry was by far the largest user. The most important fact was that the conversion of coal to a usable fuel gas was demonstrated to be commercial. During the late 1940's and early 1950's, this form of energy was largely replaced by natural gas as the pipeline net work was expanded. Producer gas was no longer economically competitive. Over the past 25 years, government controls on the interstate price of natural gas have maintained this situation. At present only three commercial small coal gasifier plants are still in operation in the United States. These facilities are operated

With only six small spodumene prospect pits, no detailed mapping, and no subsurface information in 1938, the Carolina lithium-pegmatite area now contains four mines among more than 25 properties on which exploratory work has been done. Even the open pit mine of Foote Mineral Co. described herein, from which ten million tons of ore and waste have been removed since 1952, was virgin ground when mapped in 1938-40 1. It has been a privilege to participate in the transition. In 1940, the spodumene pegmatites were known in a 25-mile belt (originally noted for tin prospecting) between Lincolnton, N. C. and Grover at the South Carolina line. Subsequently, Broadhurst 2 reported relatively small bodies northeast of Lincolnton near the Catawba County line. To the south, diamond drilling done in 1953 on the old Ross tin-mine property near Gaffney yielded pegmatite cores containing a few crystals of spodumene. This fact, not previously reported, suggests that some of the pyroxene in the Ross shaft as described by Sloan 3 may be spodumene.

A method has been developed that permits the correlations of Mehra and Thodos8 and Dastur and thodos2 for binary systems to be used for the prediction of the vapor-liquid equilibrium constants of the light and heavy constituents, Kland Kh, of a ternary hydrocarbon mixture. Furthermore, the unique relationship observed in this study, i.e., a plot of log Ke/Ki vs log Kp/K h is linear and passes through the origin, permits the calculation of the K-value for the intermediate component. This approach has been used to establish K-values for the constituents of the three ternary hydrocarbon systems used to develop this method and has also been applied to two additional ternary hydrocarbon systems to yield an average deviation of 7.7 per cent resulting from a total of 294 points for the five ternary systems considered. INTRODUCTION The rigorous calculation of vapor-liquid equilibrium constants for systems containing two or more components is a difficult problem and becomes extremely complex at elevated pressures and for conditions approaching the critical point. Although thermodynamic relationships can be developed to account for the vapor-liquid equilibrium behavior of simple systems, their use is limited because the necessary PVT data for these systems are not generally available. To establish a method for calculating K constants directly, without any recourse to the PVT behavior of a system, Mehra and Thodos8 applied the principle of corresponding states to the vapor-liquid equilibrium constants of binary hydrocarbon systems. They developed a series of charts which made possible the prediction of K-values for all binary hydrocarbon systems not containing methane. This work has been extended by Dastur and Thodos2 to include binary hydrocarbon systems containing methane. The charts developed in these two studies cover the high-pressure region and are applicable to conditions in the vicinity of the critical point. The ability of this approach to predict vapor-liquid equilibrium constants of binary hydrocarbon systems suggests that this method may be extended to the prediction of the K-values of the components of ternary hydrocarbon systems. In this investigation, the charts developed for both the methane and non - methane binary systems,2,8 together with mixture rules developed in this study, have been used to predict the K-values of the light and heavy components of a ternary hydrocarbon system. These calculated values are then used to establish the K-value of the intermediate component through the use of a novel relationship developed in the present study. DEVELOPMENT OF METHOD FOR PREDICTING K-VALUES OF TERNARY SYSTEMS The application of the corresponding state charts developed for binary hydrocarbon systems is restricted to those systems containing two components. The extension of these correlations to three-component systems requires that the ternary system be reduced to an equivalent binary, which can be treated in a manner consistent with the corresponding state development. To establish such an approach, the vapor-liquid equilibrium constant of the light component K is first calculated by assuming that the ternary mixture consists of the light component and a pseudo-heavy component of the intermediate and heavy constituents of the original ternary. To establish the vapor-liquid equilibrium constant of the heavy component Kh, the light and intermediate constituents of the ternary are combined to form a pseudo-light component of another equivalent binary system. The growing background of experimental information concerning the volumetric and phase behavior of binary and ternary hydrocarbon systems is used as the basis for a comparison of these systems with naturally occurring hydrocarbon mixtures under conditions representative of underground petroleum reservoirs. The qualitative and semiquantitative similarities and differences between the two types of systems are considered in reference to the possibilities and limitations of using experimental data on binary and ternary systems for predicting the volumetric and phase behavior of naturally occurring hydrocarbon mixtures of low molecular weight. The possible influence on such phase behavior of water, hydrogen sulphide, nitrogen, and components of relatively high molecular weight is discussed. INTRODUCTION During the past two decades much effort has been devoted to the study of the volumetric and phase behavior of pure paraffin hydrocarbons and of binary and ternary mixtures of these compounds. Many of these studies were carried out with the direct objective of utilizing a knowledge of the detailed characteristics of binary and ternary mixtures of the lighter paraffin hydrocarbons for predicting the behavior of more complex mixtures. The ability to make such predictions with accuracy would be of great value in petroleum production and refining. Although the behavior of the methane-propane system' served at one time as a qualitative illustration of the probable characteristics of the more complex hydrocarbon mixtures found in nature, it' fell far short of requirements for quantitative predictions. The present paper endeavors to indicate the relation of the more recently accumulated information concerning the behavior of binary and ternary hydrocarbons to this problem. In discussing binary and ternary systems as examples pointing toward the behavior of multi-component systems no effort is made to present new methods of predicting the characteristics of natural hydrocarbon mixtures. Preliminary proposals have been made elsewhere for the prediction of volumetric phase equilibrium and thermodynamic data for multicomponent mixtures, utilizing as a basis the behavior of binary and ternary systems. Numerous other proposals have been made. That based upon the concept of a pseudo-critical state" has proved to be of value to the petroleum industry. Concurrently with this study of binary and ternary systems investigations have been made of natural hydrocarbon systems. Of the many publications reporting such experimental information only a few examples will be mentioned. A number of studies of black oil and natural gas have been made and much attention has been directed to extended and detailed investigations of the behavior of fluids in condensate fieldS 16,17,18,19,20. This work has been supplemented by some studies of the separation of bitumen from natural hydrocarbon liquids The over-all behavior of such systems has been used in predicting the volumetric and phase behavior of naturally occurring mixtures This background of experimental and correlated information concerning the behavior of multicomponent hydrocarbon systems also permits a direct comparison of the characteristics of binary and ternary aliphatic systems with those materials produced from underground reservoirs. Achter (U.S. Naval Research Laboratory)—In a study of the surface structures developed in the fatigue of nickel at low strains as a function of temperature, we have obtained similar results.3 As our apparatus permits fatigue tests to be conducted in vacuo, there was no masking of the surface at high temperatures by oxidation so that the structures there could be observed directly. The relatively few broad slip bands observed at room temperature gave way at 300°C to a large number of uniformly distributed and narrower slip bands. At 550°C deformation began to concentrate around the grain boundaries and progressively increased up to 800°C. In addition fatigue strength was observed initially to increase with increasing temperature up to about 600°C due to the effectively increased ductility caused by the dispersal of fatigue damage. The fatigue strength then decreased at higher temperatures as grain boundary cracking dominates. Maria Ronay, W. H. Reimann, and W. A. Wood (authors' reply)— The authors are pleased to note that R. L. Stegman and M. R. Achter reach similar conclusions from their study of surface slip on nickel. However, they would emphasize that their own conclusions are based on what is shown by study of specimens that have been sectioned and that this study also shows that surface slip is not necessarily representative of what happens below the surface.
