Not only E. B. Mayo but also W. C. Lacy, who apparently urged the preparation of this analysis, is to be commended. Regional thinking of this type is needed to assure future success in the never-ending search for new mineralized and petroliferous districts. As is usually the case, here is a regional study that will be read by the mining geologist alone. It is ironic that several of the trends established in this study have suggested themselves in northern mid-continent, detailed, and regional studies. These, where established, have offered new keys to petroleum exploration and have provided a possible basis for unraveling a number of broad generalities. The oil geologists, active in Colorado, Kansas, and Oklahoma, would find much food for thought in Mr. Mayo's projections.

Drilling for oil in the eastern producing states was fairly active during the first part of 1931, although less so than in 1930. With low prices development declined during the year, until the low prices of the summer resulted in an almost complete shut-down of drilling. This coincided with the action of the Conservation Board of the Pennsylvania Crude Oil Producers Assn, in limiting pipe line runs to 50 per cent of the 1930 normal for the Bradford district and upper country, and to 70 per cent for the balance of the region. Not only was new drilling halted but in many cases oil-producing properties were shut in. In November crude prices were partly restored, and all oil offered was being taken except in the Bradford district which was restricted to 80 per cent of the 1930 normal. During the latter part of the year drilling was being resumed on a moderate scale, and new production indicated a resumption of the proration order. The interest in gas development which has been under way for several years, maintained its supremacy over the search for oil in 1931. New reserves of importance were developed during the year in the Western Kentucky Coal Basin, in the Eastern Kentucky shale gas territory, in Stark County, Ohio, as well as the Oriskany sand development in northern Pennsylvania and central New York. A gas line was completed to the Eastern Seaboard serving Washington and Baltimore, and other lines were under construction designed to serve portions of the territory not hitherto supplied with natural gas. The low price of fuel oil at seaboard is understood to be the deterrent factor against further extension of natural gas lines to these markets at present. The development of these new reserves, as well as those developed by intensive drilling in old areas, resulted in the building up of large potential gas production and a lowering of rates paid to the producer. This, coupled with the country-wide tendency to lower the consumer rates of all public utilities, resulted in a general threat to reopen rate cases before various state commissions. With steadily increasing prices for imported oil, commercial production of oil from oil shale can become a reality in the near future. Presently we are importing about 43% of our oil needs and this reliance on foreign oil can be reduced by utilizing the vast resources of oil shale in the western US. The oil shale resources in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming, averaging 0.06 m3/ton (15 gal per st) and occurring in beds at least 3 m (10 ft) thick, are estimated at 293 Gm3 (1842 billion bbl) of which only 97 Gdm3 (610 billion bbl) are recoverable with current technology. The full potential of this vast resource can be realized only if significant steps are taken toward improving mining and retorting technology and solving environmental problems. Oil shales with a grade of 0.08-0.10 m3/ton (20-25 gal per st) are amenable to mining and surface retorting; whereas lower-grade oil shales may be recovered by in situ retorting.

They are usable in the Clifton district. Here too are found the percentages to be added to an estimate for Engineering and General Expense. In Chapter II—Comparative Costs—these elementary costs have been classified, averaged and reported as labor and material unit costs. In such form the labor unit costs, when properly applied to similar conditions as these under which they were derived, are usable anywhere. In essence it was suggested that there exists, at least under certain conditions, a mechanical equation of state; that the stress required for flow depends upon the instantaneous values of the strain, strain rate, and temperature, and not upon their past values. It is proposed that under these circumstances thc stress does not depend upon past history of these variables, but is like the temperature of a gas that depends only upon the instantaneous values of the pressure and volume. This notion has not been applied to present-day studies of metals, though it is especially applicable to the study of creep. It is the purpose of this paper to analyze the significance and possible range of applicability of this idea and to determine how it influences the accepted ideas concerning creep. AS part of a program on phase relationships and transformation processes of titanium alloy systems, the titanium-rich corner of the Ti-Mo-V system has been investigated. This region was surveyed primarily to supply information toward the development of a creep resistant, weldable alloy, with a minimum alloy content, for use in the 425° to 550 °C range. Specifically, the investigation was directed toward the development of a stable ß alloy with less total alloying additions than is found in the Ti-30 pet Mo alloy. A secondary objective was the development of a creep resistant, weldable a-ß alloy for application around 300°C. Molybdenum was selected as primary additive to titanium on the basis of an investigation1 which showed that the Ti-30 pet Mo alloy had promising elevated temperature tensile properties. In spite of the influx of operators into the Gulf Coast anxious to retrieve their depleted production in other fields, and in spite of very active application of the most scientific geophysical methods to locate new producing areas, the results have been very discouraging and the year has failed to produce more than the average results for a Gulf Coast year. During the year seven new oil fields, some of which are still of very little importance, and one new gas area have been discovered. These fields are Tom Ball, Greta, Cleveland, Raisin and Garwood in Colorado County; Louise and Premont in Jim Wells County, and the new producing gas area near Ace in southern Polk County. During the year salt has been found for the first time at Carlos and Esperson. New producing areas have been developed on East Stratton Ridge, Hockley, Hull, Port Neches, near Pettus in Bee County, and on the O'Connor Ranch in Victoria County. The total production for the Gulf Coast for the year was 62,837,435 bbl., an increase of 18,589,000 bbl. over 1932. During the year, 1307 wells have been drilled of which 207 were wildcats, compared with 653 wells and 141 wildcats the previous year. The total daily production at the end of the year was 165,201 bbl. At present there are 3100 oil wells producing. The average production per well is 55.5 bbl. per day. The price of crude fluctuated considerably during the year, beginning at 80c per barrel and closing the year at $1.04 per barrel. Completion data for 1933 are as follows:

An analysis of the design of medium to hard rock tunneling machines is presented. The developed equations are used to compare performances and machine requirements using kerf and fixed pick cutters to bore a given rock. With the use of pick cutters, required thrusts can be greatly reduced and still achieve the same boring rate as with present day tooth or kerf cutters. It appears that the cutting coefficient, which for most boring machines is of the order of 0.1, should be increased to one or larger to facilitate rock removal by cutting rather than grinding. The depth of cut and the indexing distance should be greatly increased to make use of inherent rock weakness.

In 1915, the State of California passed a law of great scope and importance. This law has been in successful operation for a year and may be briefly described as an act " establishing and creating a department of the State Mining Bureau for the protection of the natural resources of petroleum and gas from waste and destrucbion through improper operations in production; providing for the inspection of petroleum and gas wells; requiring all persons operating petroleum and gas wells to make certain reports" and providing the necessary officers and assessments to carry out the provisions of the act. The statute provides for a separate department of the State Mining Bureau, under the general supervision of the State mineralogist, with a staff composed of a "state oil and gas supervisor" and four deputies. It rules that all petroleum and natural gas wells shall be drilled, operated or abandoned under the supervision of the State supervisor, who shall order such tests or remedial work as seems to him necessary to protect the interests of property owners and the general public. It also provides for a board of arbitration to consider orders given by the supervisor which are not acceptable to the well owner. Section 18 of the act, which is the provision that is directly related to this paper, requires ('the owner of any well referred to in this act to keep a careful and accurate log of the drilling of such well," and further requires that this log shall show the character and depth of the formations passed through or encountered in the drilling, particularly the location and depth of the water-bearing strata; the character of the water encountered (so far as ascertained); whether the water was shut off, and, if solat what point; that it shall show completely the amounts, kinds and size of casing used; the depth at which oil-bearing strata are encountered; the depth and character of the strata, and whether all water was successfully and permanently shut off so as to prevent percolation or penetration into the oil-bearing strata. FEW phase diagrams of alloys composed of two transition metals have been adequately studied, probably because of the high melting points involved. Transition metals are the elements that have inner shells incompletely filled with electrons. They comprise groups IIIa to Villa of the periodic table, including more than half of all metals. We have chosen to study two systems whose comparatively low melting points allowed the alloys to be melted in a molybdenum resistance furnace. The nickel-palladium system proved to consist of a simple series of solid solutions, but iron-palladium manifested several remarkable features. The main characteristics of the latter diagram were decisively established, but lack of time prevented precise determination of phase boundaries. The gamma to alpha transformation in this system is unusual and warrants further study. Grigorjew1 determined the liquidus and solidus of the iron-palladium system by thermal methods. He found a minimum melting point, but no eutectic. He also found that palladium lowered the gamma to alpha and raised the gamma to delta transformation temperatures of iron, with a complete series of solid solutions existing between gamma iron and palladium. His measurements also indicated a compound or super-lattice near the composition FePd3. Jellinghaus2 found that annealing at 500° C. greatly increased the magnetic coercive force of an alloy of composition FePd. X-ray dif-fraction photographs showed that a tetragonal ordered phase had formed during the anneal.

The Alligator Ridge gold deposits are located in northwest White Pine County at the southwest end of Alligator Ridge. Alligator Ridge is on the west side of Long Valley in the range of hills that separates Long and Newark valleys. The nearest population center is Ely, about 113 km (70 miles) to the southeast. Access to the Alligator Ridge gold mine from Ely is via US Highway 50 and the Long Valley Ruby Marsh Road. The latitude and longitude is approximately 39° 45' north and 116° 30' west. The Alligator Ridge gold deposits occur in the lower 61 m (200 ft) of the Mississippian-Devonian Pilot Shale formation, a laminated calcareous carbonaceous siltstone. The gold deposits contain carbonaceous, oxide, and jasperoid type gold ore. For more details on the geologic features of the deposits, see Schull, Sutherland, and Ilchik (in press). The discovery story of Alligator Ridge began in the spring of 1976 when the areas mapped as jasperoid on the 1:250,000 scale geologic map of White Pine County (Hose and Blake, 1976) were examined and sampled. Seventeen samples, about 23 kg (50 lb), were collected from an area about 0.65 km2 (0.25 sq mile). Of these 17 samples 10 reported atomic absorption values of less than 0. 1 ppm Au and 7 reported values in the 0.1 to 1.0 ppm Au range. In June of 1976 20 lode claims were staked to claim the area of the rock chip sampling. The claims' end and side center lines were used as a grid for soil sampling. Sample stations were 91 m (300 ft) apart and sample lines were 229 m (750 ft) apart. The samples were sieved to - 180 µm (- 80 mesh). Out of 99 soil samples, seven samples reported Au values in the 0.1 to 1.0 ppm range. Of the seven auriferous samples, five were located over the jasperoid outcrops previously sampled; one over unmineralized Pilot Shale a few hundred m (ft) downslope from some Au-bearing jasperoid; and one from a 15 x 15 m (50 x 50 ft) talus outcrop area of hitherto unnoticed mineralized Pilot Shale. Subsequent sampling, mapping and drilling would show that this 15 X 15 m (50 x 50 ft) outcrop area was the top of the Vantage 1 ore body, about 1.27 Mt (1,400,000 st) of over 3 g/0.9 t (0.11 oz/st) Au. Late in the summer of 1976 about 30 more 1.4 to 2.2 kg (3 to 5 lb) rock chip samples were collected in the course of preliminary geologic mapping. This mapping and sampling showed that the gold-bearing jasperoids occurred at the contact between the Pilot Shale and the underlying Devils Gate Limestone. Rock chip samples of 0.1 ppm Au or greater were restricted to the jasperoids and the mineralized outcrop area of Pilot Shale located by the soil sample survey. Rock chip samples from the area of mineralized Pilot Shale were in the 3 to 5 ppm Au range. Activity resumed in the summer of 1977 with a more detailed soil geochemical survey. The jasperoid areas were defined as large geochemical gold anomalies of values greater than 0.1 ppm and locally greater than 0.2 ppm Au. Soil samples from the area of mineralized Pilot Shale outlined a greater than 0.1 ppm gold anomaly 61 x 152 m (200 x 500 ft) in size. Further geologic mapping showed that elsewhere, even where bleached and silicified, the Pilot Shale areas were geochemically very low in gold (less than 0.1 ppm Au). In November, 1977 twelve rotary percussion drill holes were drilled to test the gold-bearing jasperoid areas and the mineralized Pilot Shale area. Drilling of the jasperoid areas showed that the jasperoids gave way at shallow depths [less than 24 m (80 ft)] to unmineralized unaltered Devils Gate Limestone. The intermetallic compounds MgzSn and Mg2Pb are two of the important series of stoichiometric compounds which magnesium forms with elements of the fourth group of the periodic system. Since there is a complete series of compounds, all possessing the same comparatively simple structure, a unique opportunity is presented to study their properties with respect to increasing atomic number of the anion as it varies from silicon and germanium, through tin and lead. The present work deals with the two lower members of this group, and it is hoped eventually that additional data regarding the silicide and germanide will be obtained. The results of such a complete study provide part of the essential basis for the empirical correlation and theoretical treatment which, in other systems, has contributed to an understanding of inter-metallic compounds and the metallic'state in general. Some experimental data are already available in the literature. However, they are fragmentary and limited in significance owing to the methods of preparation employed and the impure materials available at the time. It was our objective, therefore, using pure metals and improved metallurgical methods of preparation, to produce stoichiometric compounds of high purity for the study of their electrical and chemical properties. We felt that a detailed investigation of chemical properties, about which relatively little is known, combined with electrical properties, would be a significant contribution to the understanding of these compounds and in particular to the mechanism of corrosion associated with types of bonding in alloy systems. The chemical studies are reported elsewhere. Previous Investigations Previous work concerning the electrical properties of these compounds was undertaken in connection with the establishment of the two phase diagrams which are available in Hansenl and Beck. The first comprehensive investigation of the electrical conductivity of magnesium-tin and magnesium-lead alloys was made by Kurnakov and Stepanov.3 This was followed by Grube and Voss-kiihler4 who studied electrical conductivity and thermal expansion over a wide range of temperature and who, unlike Stepanov, appreciated the significance of the large solid solubility of tin in magnesium and took some precautions to obtain an equilibrium state. SHORTLY after Ambrose Swasey suggested the creation of the Engineering Foundation in 1914, the World War broke. upon the scene. Consequently all eyes were soon turned to national security problems. In 1916 the newly-organized Engineering Foundation and the four National Societies joined with the National Academy of Sciences in establishing the National Research Council. From then until 1923 the Engineering Foundation devoted the greater part of its resources to the support of the Research Council and the Council's division of engineering. Since 1923, how-ever, it has turned to the original intention for which it was created, of cooperating with the national societies in proj-ects affecting engineering at large, though it still retains a connection with the Research Council. Mere enumeration and tabulation of work undertaken can of course lend but a vague idea of actual accomplish-ments. The reports of the Foundation give information of its widespread activities.

In the spring of 1967, after a careful study of existing geology along the Pacific Coast including Alaska, the USBM, in conjunction with the USGS, decided that the offshore area around Nome, Alaska, presented an unparalleled land-to-sea comparison site for the evaluation of marine core drilling techniques and sampling equipment. Considering the geological evidence available and the production history of the Nome Beaches (5-6 million oz. of gold recovered), it appeared likely that gold in commercial quantities could occur in the offshore area. A 180 sq mi area of Norton Sound, extending roughly 14 miles to the east and west of Nome and averaging 6 miles to the south, was tested by approximately 530 line-miles of sub-bottom profiling. A total of 4043 ft (56 holes) were drilled in unconsolidated sediments, yielding mixtures of gravel, sand, silt and clay. Of the total holes drilled, 16 went to bedrock and six were terminated short of their intended depths due to boulders which halted penetration, or rough seas which caused the ship to move as the anchors slipped over hard sea-floor surface. The rest of the holes were terminated when the penetrative capabilities of the drills were reached, or when the required amount of geological data were attained.

Crushing development at Duval Corp.'s Sierrita concentrator in Sahuarita, Ariz., has been a continuing effort since plant startup in January 1970. The original crushing system was designed to produce 65 000 t/d (72,000 stpd) of ore. However, in the summer of 1970 the Sierrita plant was averaging only 43 000 t/d (47,000 stpd) due to coarser than expected secondary crushing plant feed, lower than design crusher operating availability, and inability to achieve design tertiary crusher power draught at an acceptable hydraulic support pressure.

W. C. Ellis—The intergranular fracture observed by these authors in brass seems to be characteristic of metals when tested under similar conditions. It has been observed by us in room temperature tests on lead alloys subjected to constant stress when the stress has been low enough to afford a small strain rate. If, however, the test be carried out at a high stress and therefore at a large strain rate, a characteristic, tapered, transcrystalline fracture is obtained. The same change of fracture has been observed by others with decrease of strain rate and increase of temperature for other metals—for example aluminum—and may be presumed, as the authors point out, to be general for metals. These findings suggest a plastic flow mechanism under conditions of small strain rate and high corresponding temperature differing from classical block slip. The required conditions point to a process fundamentally diffusive in nature—a less organized process than block slip. Nabarro18 has shown that plastic flow can occur by stress induced diffusion of vacant sites— a process of self-diffusion. Movements of a pseudo-viscous nature at grain boundaries are suggested in the work of Ke.15 Deformation near to a grain boundary by other than a slip mechanism appears necessary to Boas and Hargreaves.19 Wood and Rachinger20 report a cellular structure in slowly deformed alumi- num—the cell size is larger, the higher the temperature and the slower the strain rate. Presumably in the latter case diffusive movements occurred in the cell boundaries. In any case the nonslip mechanism seems somewhat obscure and further work is indicated. Such studies will undoubtedly clarify the nature and behavior of lattice imperfections—the very core of the strength and plastic properties of metals. F. H. Wilson and E. W. Palmer (authors' reply)—It is certain that the metallic behavior which has been termed "creep" includes many interdependent phenomena of which a nonslip type of plastic flow may well be one. The reports to which Mr. Ellis refers are illustrative of the many different observations that must be correlated for a complete understanding of creep. The list could be extended considerably.
