HIS note reports the existence of several new scandium intermetallic compounds of the A2B and AB stoichiometries where the A element is scandium and the B element is from group VIII or IB of the periodic table. Alloys were arc melted from high-purity materials using 2-g charges. Typical lot analyses for the materials used are given in Table I. Chemical analyses were not made on the alloys as there was little or no weight loss on melting. After annealing the specimens for 14 days at 600°C and water quenching, metallographic and X-ray techniques were used to determine the occurrence of the various phases. Table II lists the relevant data for the A2B phases. The Ti2Ni structure,2 has ninety-six atoms in a face-centered cubic cell, whilst the Al2Cu structure is body-centered tetragonal.3 The occurrence and stability of the various A2B type phases in transition metal alloy systems has recently been considered by Nevitt.4 The Ti2 Ni-type phases occur over a relatively narrow range of radius ratios from 1.14-1.26 with A partners mainly from the titanium group and B partners predominantly from the cobalt group. This suggests that both a favorable relative size of the atoms and a favorable electron concentration are necessary conditions for the existence of this structure type. A12Cu-type phases involving Ti group elements as A partners are formed with B partners from the cobalt and nickel groups, predominantly the latter, and have a higher radius ratio (1.27-1.29) than the Ti2Ni-type phases. The occurrence of both Sc2Pd and Sc2Co can be rationalized in terms of these considerations but SczNi is anomalous because of its high radius ratio. The radius ratios are calculated from the Goldschmidt CN12 radii and it might be postulated that the scandium atom is reduced in size in the compound. Unfortunately the apparent atomic size of scandium in the compound cannot be calculated from a knowledge of the structure and lattice dimensions. The crystal structure of the Sc2Au compound could not be identified from the powder diffraction pattern, but it is interesting to note that it is isostructural with a series of A2Au phases where A is a rare earth element.5 Pertinent information concerning the AB phases found in this investigation is given in Table 111. All the phases have the ordered bcc CsCl structure. The occurrence and stability of CsC1-type phases have recently been discussed by Dwight,7 who concludes that the relative sizes of the atoms do not appear to be a controlling factor (the radius ratios of all the known phases vary between 0.985 and 1.439) but that the occurrence of the phase is predominantly dependent on the relative positions of the A and B partners in the periodic table. As a measure of the stability of a given CsCl phase it has been customary to define a lattice contraction on alloying, DAB — dAB, where DAB is the AB interatomic spacing as calculated from the Goldschmidt CN8 radii and dAB is the AB interatomic distance in the compound (= v3/2 ao). Values of the parameter DscB -dScB for the compounds found in this investigation are given in column 5 of Table III and are plotted in Fig. 1. If the lattice contraction does in fact reflect the stability of a phase then Fig. 1 shows two very interesting trends when the position of the B partner in the periodic table is considered. Firstly, within any given group the stability increases in order on going from the first to third long period. Secondly, within any given period the stability increases in order as the B partner is taken from the copper, nickel, and cobalt groups. THIS Rock Chapel plant of Consolidated Quarries Corporation (Fig. 1) is three miles northeast of Lithonia, DeKalb County, Georgia. It was opened about eight years ago for crushed stone aggregate. This paper reviews a number of experiments that have been tried in drilling and blasting, and gives the practice in use today. It also present, several theories on the action of explosives in this type of blasting. [ ] The rock worked is a bare dome of granite gneiss about 3000 ft. in diameter, rising 150 ft. above the surrounding ground (Fig. 2). It is uniform in composition and quality, without seams, and extends downward to unknown depth below the quarry floor. A water well drilled 600 ft. remained in the same rock. The principal difficulty encountered in blasting is an easy split, which tends to break clown the rock in large blocks.

Presence of hot water brought on by volcanic action nearby has severely complicated mining in the Limon gold mine in Nicaragua. Routine pumping problems have been multiplied and ventilation is a major problem. Enclosing rock is so hot that 20 pct of all power generated at the mine is consumed by forced ventilation. But hot water underground, however disagreeable and troublesome, may be handled and surmounted like any other difficulty if the estimated profit margin permits. Empresa Minera de Nicaragua's Limon mine is a 400-ton gold-silver producer located in western Nicaragua about 60 miles northwest of the capital city, Managua, and some 45 miles from the Nicaragua-Honduras border. Limon is situated in a low- lying district with a nearby chain of active and semi-active Tertiary volcanoes.

The application of wet cleaning processes for the beneficiation of bituminous coal has created in some localities a problem in the recovery and disposal of fine solids in the washery water. The maximum allowable concentration of these solids in the washery circuit that is consistent with satisfactory operation of the cleaning units remains a controversial point. It has, however, been generally recognized for a number of years that some degree of control should be exerted over the concentration of such material. Early methods of control involved intermittent or continuous discharge of a portion of the plant slurry into near-by streams or settling ponds, and this persisted even after the adoption of settling tanks or cones. The practice is not always economical, for two reasons: first, because of the waste of coal, and, second, because it is sometimes difficult and expensive to obtain an adequate supply of water. The latter condition often is aggravated by chemical treatment of the make-up water that is necessary to prevent excessive corrosion of plant equipment. The modern approach to this problem has been the adoption of continuous thickening devices. However, because such equipment occupies considerable plant space and is somewhat expensive to construct, the practice of loading these thickeners beyond their rated capacity is widespread, therefore often the performance of such units is not altogether satisfactory. In recent years, European washeries have increased the rate of settling of the fine coal from the slurry by the addition of specially prepared starch solutions. These reagents cause flocculation of the solid particles and thereby increase the rate of sedimentation. The first important work on the flocculation and clarification of coal slurry was done by Henry, who developed the Henry process and used it successfully in Belgian preparation plants. Soon after the initiation in Belgium, the process was introduced into England, where subsequent, investigation developed similar processes, which were successfully used in

The oxidation rates of pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopy-rite, chalcocite, covellite, bortzite, galem, sphalerite, and stibnite have beet2 carefully compared at 120 oC, using aqueous phosphate solutions buffered at pH 2.7, 7.1, and 11.2 as zvell as in 1.0 M NaOH and in am~onia-containing solutions. Under conditions of these studies, variations in rates of more than a factor of two per unit of mineral surface area were not observed for different minerals in phosphate buffered solutions, except that pyrrhotite showed unusually rapid oxidation rates In acid solutions, and stibnite showed very rapid oxidation rates in basic solutions. In caustic solutions, oxidation vates varied considerably, the most rapid being for pyrite and the slowest for sphalerite. In the presence of ammonia, only copper minerals showed more vapid oxidation rates in neutral solutions. Oxidation rates were measured on the basis of oxygen-consunzption rates per unit surface area of exposed mineral, using equivalent surface areas, mineral mesh sizes, pulp densities, agitation, and oxygen pressure. OXIDIZING pressure leaching of sulfide minerals has been a commercial method of treating concentrates of nickel, cobalt, and copper for over a decade, and recently the treatment of lead and zinc concentrates,' and even the recovery of sulfur from pyrrhotite by such processes, have been shown to be technically feasible.' Furthermore, the leaching of uranium ores by solutions acidified through the oxidation of pyrite and other sulfides present in the ore is commercially practicable.3 5 The mechanisms by which sulfide minerals oxidize in aqueous environments are not yet understood. However, certain generalities can be made for systems containing no unusual reagents, in which oxygen is the oxidizing agent. In acid solutions the oxidation of many sulfide minerals leads to the formation of elemental sulfur.8'7 The attack of some sulfides, notably galena (PbS), sphalerite (ZnS), and pyrrhotite (FeS), at temperatures below about 110°C leads to an almost quantitative conversion of the sulfide mineral to elemental sulfur according to the equation: On the other hand pyrite (FeS2) and copper minerals do not yield elemental sulfur quantitatively. Not more than 50 pct of the sulfur in pyrite is converted to the elemental form in acid oxidation, and this percentage is lowered by higher temperatures and possibly higher oxygen pressures.8'9 Copper minerals sometimes yield elemental sulfurlo'" but, since sulfur can reduce cupric ions with the precipitation of CuS or Cu2S, it is not likely that elemental sulfur is obtained in good yield. In acid solutions sulfur that is not converted to the elemental form always appears as sulfate salts or sulfuric acid. Sulfide minerals that yield elemental sulfur nearly quantitatively on oxidation in acid solutions tend to generate H2S when the conditions are not oxidizing. However, although it has been suggested that H2S is an essential intermediate in the mechanism of oxidation," this is doubtful because it is oxidized very slowly by oxygen. In basic solutions elemental sulfur is never formed, as predicted by thermodynamical considerations, summarized in the form of a potential-pH diagram in Fig. 1. However in neutral and basic solutions, unstable forms of sulfur not shown in the diagram appear during oxidation, notably thiosulfate (SOT-) and polythi-onates (S,O;-, x = 2 to 6).l3,l4 On prolonged oxidation only hexavalent sulfur as sulfate (SOi-) or sulfamate (NHzSO;) is found to remain, the latter appearing only in the presence of ammonia. The oxidation kinetics for thiosulfate by oxygen are the subject of a separate paper,'5 and were studied on the presumption that thiosulfate may, in fact, be a primary oxidation product for sulfide minerals, at least in neutral and basic solutions. A survey of the literature indicated that comparative oxidation rates for different sulfide minerals were needed to establish the role of the mineral structure and its thermodynamic properties on the oxidation rates and mechanisms.

The device here described has been found useful in sampling foundry-iron, and there is no reason why it should not be equally useful in sampling other metals, which are not too hard to be drilled with a breast-drill. It consists, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, of an ordinary plumber's gas T (without bead) of about 1/2-inch in internal diameter, over the leg of which is snugly fitted a small tin cup, about If inches deep, to catch the drillings which are made by use of a breast-drill with a 1/4-inch twist bit, working through the arms of the T. The forward arm of the T is filed down to a blunt edge, over which is stretched a short piece of rubber tubing projecting a little beyond the end. The bottom of the inside of the front arm of the ? is filed down to a slope, to facilitate the passage of drillings into the tin cup. The rear arm of the T is fitted with a tin ring, projecting about 1/4-inch, for the purpose of holding in place a stiff spiral brass spring, which serves to press the sampler firmly against the metal to be drilled. The other end of the spring is supported against a shoulder of the breastdrill. The projecting rubber prevents the loss of any drillings, and also the falling of sand from above into the sampler. With ordinary care there need be no risk of getting particles of rubber into the sample. It is, of course, not possible to get a fair average sample of drillings, representing a pile of foundry-iron, by taking drillings from any one or two pieces, because of the frequently mixed character of the iron. This observation applies more particularly to the sampling of iron as it is broken and piled at the foundry, than to sampling at the works, where, if the furnace is working regularly, a few pigs may fairly represent a whole cast. A homogeneous and uniform cylindrical reservoir containing oil and gas is fractured vertically on completion and is produced at a constant bottom-hole pressure. The fracture has an infinite flow capacity, is of limited lateral extent and is bounded above and below by the impermeable strata defining the vertical extent of the reservoir. Results show that such a fractured reservoir can be represented by a reservoir of circular symmetry having very nearly the same production history. The well radius of this circular reservoir is about 1/4 the fracture length and is essentially the same as that obtained previously for a single fluid of constant compressibility. At the same value of cumulative oil production, gas-oil ratios of fractured reservoirs producing at constant terzinal pressure are larger than those of reservoirs having no fractures. This leads to more inefficient use of the reservoir energy in fractured wells and results in lower reservoir pressures for the same cumulative oil production. The reduction in operating life due to fracturing a reservoir is not as great as that for a slightly compressible fluid. This diflerence can be accounted for by the lower reservoir pressure in the fractured reservoir and its adverse effect on the average mobility and compressibility of the oil. As anticipated, the reduction in operating life increases czs the reservoir permeability decreases. The type of results presented in this report can be used to determine the economic attractiveness of fracture treatments per se, to setect the initial spacing to be used in developing a field, and to compare the relative merits of fracturing available wells and infill drilling. INTRODUCTION The effect of vertical fractures on a reservoir producing either an incompressible or a compressible liquid has already been discussed in the 1iterature.l,2 Those results indicate that the production history of such a reservoir is essentially the same as that of a circular reservoir having an effective well radius of approximately one-fourth the fracture length. The present work reports on the effect of a vertical fracture on a reservoir producing two compressible fluids —oil and gas—by solution gas drive. Because of the empirical nature of the PVT and relative permeability data used to obtain the performance of such reservoirs, results can only be obtained numerically and with the aid of high-speed computers. Since reservoirs lose their radial symmetry when fractured vertically, pressure and saturation can no longer be given only in terms of distance from the well. Two coordinates (such as x and y) must now be used to describe the pressure and saturation within the reservoir, and, since we are dealing with compressible fluids, time is also a variable. Thus the solution of a vertically fractured reservoir requires finding two unknowns (pressure and saturation) in two space variables (say x and y) and in time (t). Since no means are readily and generally available for solving such problems at the present time, we have used the results of previous work1,2 to approximate the effect of a vertical fracture on a reservoir producing both oil and gas by depletion. The purpose of the present wmk, then, is to investigate the possibility of using available numerical techniques (limited at the moment to one space variable) to study the two-space-variable flow behavior resulting from a vertical fracture. Results obtained in the course of this investigation are also reported and discussed. Input and output data of the numerical methods used are given in practical units: BOPD, feet, psi, cp, and md. Results are discussed fist in terms of specific reservoir and crude properties and geometries. Later, dimensionless parameters are introduced in order to extend results to different values of some of the reservoir and fracture properties. IDEALIZATION AND DESCRIPTION OF THE FRACTURED SYSTEM It is assumed that a horizontal oil-producing layer of constant thickness and of uniform porosity and permeability is bounded above and below by impermeable strata. The reservoir has an impermeable, circular, cylindrical outer boundary of radius r,. The fracture system is represented by a single, plane, vertical fracture of limited radial extent, bounded by the impermeable matrix above and below' the producing layer (reservoir). It is assumed that there is no pressure drop in the fracture due to fluid flow. 1 indicates the general three-dimensional geometry of the fractured reservoir. Gravity effects and the effects of differential depletion resulting from variations in hydrostatic head (pressure) will be neglected. Diatomite is a siliceous, sedimentary rock consisting principally of the fossilized skeletal remains of the diatom, a unicellular aquatic plant related to the algae. Thus, it has-been formed by the induration of diatomaceous ooze, and consists mainly of diatomaceous silica, a form or variety of opal which is first formed in the cell walls of the living diatom. Diatomaceous silica is not generally regarded as a synonym or the equivalent for diatomite, although it has been so used at various times. Accurately, diatomaceous silica is the preferred name for the principal mineral component of which the rock, diatomite, is composed. The terms diatomaceous earth and kieselguhr are used as synonymous with diatomite. The designations tripoli, tripolite, infusorial earth, etc., were used at one time but are now obsolete. With the changing nomenclature, these terms that were at one time correct when proposed and used for generations would be considered incorrect if used today in the light of current knowledge. The designation diatomite is reserved for those accumulations of diatomaceous silica that are of sufficient quality, size, and minability to be considered of potential commercial value. Processed diatomite possesses an unusual particulate structure and chemical stability that lends itself to applications not filled by any other form of silica. Foremost among these applications is its use as a filter aid, which accounts for over half of its current consumption. Its unique diatom structure, low bulk density, high absorptive capacity, high surface area, and relatively low abrasion are attributes responsible for its utility as a functional filler and as an extender in paint, paper, rubber, and in plastics; and as an anti-caking agent; thermal insulating material; catalyst carrier; and chromatographic support; polish, abrasive, and pesticide extender to name a few representative applications. The United States is the principal producing country, although diatomite is found in numerous other locations.

DISCUSSION Fred C. Bond (Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co., Milwaukee)—This is a very complete description of the screened ore fine grinding installation at Lake Shore. The only important data which might be desired are the operating screen analyses and power consumption in each stage. The statement that the energy consumption, or kw-hr per ton, remains constant for all mill diameters is of great interest, but the opinion is widely held that the kw-hr per ton decreases as the mill diameter increases. More definite test work is needed to establish this point. Screened ore fine minding has been successful on hard Lake Shore ore &d on about equally hard South African Rand ore. However, it is still not determined whether it would be successful on ores of average or less than average hardness. It is possible that with softer ores the consumption of ore pebbles might be exceedingly high, or might even exceed the available supply. Also, the softer feed might result in a rapid buildup of harmful intermediate sizes in the mill circuit. These factors can be determined only by a full scale or long pilot mill test. In any case the Lake Shore staff is to be congratulated for this pioneering work. Bunting. S. Crocker (author's reply)—As requested, the operating screen analyses and Bower consumption for each of the four stages of pebble milling are given, see Table XII. The fist three stages are in series circuit; the last stage is in closed circuit. The primary circuit had rock feed averaging 124 g per piece and the final stages rock feed weighing 63 g. The intermediate stages had mixtures of the two. DISCUSSION Fred C. Bond (Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co., Milwaukee)—This is a very complete description of the screened ore fine grinding installation at Lake Shore. The only important data which might be desired are the operating screen analyses and power consumption in each stage. The statement that the energy consumption, or kw-hr per ton, remains constant for all mill diameters is of great interest, but the opinion is widely held that the kw-hr per ton decreases as the mill diameter increases. More definite test work is needed to establish this point. Screened ore fine minding has been successful on hard Lake Shore ore &d on about equally hard South African Rand ore. However, it is still not determined whether it would be successful on ores of average or less than average hardness. It is possible that with softer ores the consumption of ore pebbles might be exceedingly high, or might even exceed the available supply. Also, the softer feed might result in a rapid buildup of harmful intermediate sizes in the mill circuit. These factors can be determined only by a full scale or long pilot mill test. In any case the Lake Shore staff is to be congratulated for this pioneering work. Bunting. S. Crocker (author's reply)—As requested, the operating screen analyses and Bower consumption for each of the four stages of pebble milling are given, see Table XII. The fist three stages are in series circuit; the last stage is in closed circuit. The primary circuit had rock feed averaging 124 g per piece and the final stages rock feed weighing 63 g. The district is described by Emmons in U. S. Geological Survey Bulletin 408, 1910. Little was said of the Elko Prince, however, as only a small amount of work had then been completed. The geological structure of the region is simple. The oldest exposed formation, covering most of the area, is rhyolite, which has a light-colored devitrified groundmass enclosing phenocrysts of feldspar, quartz, and magnetite. It has been somewhat weathered and partially stained with oxide of iron. There are several outcrops of andesite which cut the rhyolite. The ore deposits occur as fissure veins, replacement veins, and sheeted zones. The Elko Prince vein is of the first type. The rhyolite near the veins is silicified, stained with oxide of iron, and, at some localities, replaced by ore, or is so permeated by metals as to be classed as ore. The vein filling consists chiefly of quartz, and the values consist entirely of gold and silver. Part of the gold exists as the native metal and part is associated with pyrite. Silver occurs free and as argentite in banded streaks through the vein. These veins trend in a northwesterly direction, with dips varying from 65' to vertical. Extrapolation is a useful technique, but it can be overdone. Seldom is it justified to study over a range of 1 to 6 and extrapolate the results to 150,000. It is especially dangerous if the extrapolation is based on a false assumption. The authors assume settlers scale-up by residence time rather than by area, admit their result (a settler depth of 7 m) is "unreasonable" and suggest longer, wider, shallower settlers might be better. Various authors have noted for a copper-LIX system a total flow basis of 2 gpm per sq ft for sizing settlers. The results of this are compared with those in the paper in [Table 7]. The authors note that flooding of their settlers was never approached. Thus the smallest unit calculated is understandably twice too big. The largest however, is 5% of the required size. I note that the figures in [Table 6] for 1/min/cm2 are based on plan area rather than cross section as titled and are wrong by l0 4. A flow of 2050 1/min/cm2 is about Mach I. It is also 10 5/3 or 46.5 times that of the little one, although the abstract says the design was based on constant flow rate per unit cross section.

The article unfortunately has some serious flaws negating the usefulness of the paper. The authors claim that kriging (linear kriging) is superior to other methods such as polygon. This is not the case. The deterministic methods (referring to polygon, ID, IDS, etc.) should not be compared with the statistical methods (linear kriging, disjunctive kriging, etc.) because they differ not only in their assumptions, but also their tools used in estimation. Thus, they give different results. By comparing the results of deterministic methods and linear kriging, the authors conclude that polygon, IDS, and linear kriging give an average thickness close to the value obtained from realizations. Besides, they argue that linear kriging gives less variance than the others [(fig. 2)]. The first conclusion is expected, due to the well-known central limit theorem. The second is the result of the statistical properties of different estimators. Thus, the comparison presented in the paper is rather meaningless because the authors have failed to follow basic statistical procedures. The numerical results of different approaches to an estimation problem cannot be generalized. In conclusion, the paper is not a meaningful contribution, and sadly, quite erroneous.

A new method is proposed to obtain automatically an unbiased estimate of the interdendritic spacing A. It is shown that the structure can be built by a random distribution of a rectangular basic unit. The usual definition of the interdendritic spacing yields a value 1 which, coupled with A, gives the shape of the basic rectangular unit. A study of the relationship between dendrite arm spacing and solidification rate was conducted as a part of a research program on dendritic solidification. For any comparison between theory and experiments to be meaningful, it is necessary to measure reproducible and clearly defined spacings. Fig. 1 shows clearly that even in a fairly simple structure such measurements are difficult. if we compare photos (a) and (b), we can hardly assess which one shows the larger spacing. Moreover, the quantity to be measured can be defined in several ways. On a small scale, dendrites seem to be distributed in a very regular and ordered way. However, on a larger scale, this regularity no longer exists. The usual way to measure spacings is to pick up some rows of dendrite stalks; such measurements are obviously biased since less orderly regions are not taken into account. A more objective method is to section the picture with randomly oriented straight lines and average the measured interdendritic spacings. The purpose of this paper is to show that such measurements, which can be conducted automatically, yield objective and reproducible results which are directly related to characteristic features of the dendritic structure. I) THEORETICAL ANALYSIS 1-1) Mathematical Morphology and Function of Co-variance. Matheronl and Serra2 enlarced- the definition and geometrical meaning of the notion of covariance to encompass problems in mathematical morphology.
