There have been many changes in environmental control techniques since the early days of uranium mining and milling, when liquid mill effluents and often mill tailings were discharged directly into nearby streams. With today's stringent environmental controls, the uranium miner must be as aware of regulatory requirements as he is of techniques in mining, milling, and in-situ recovery. The time delays involved in bringing a uranium project on line dictate that the proposed facility be designed with a view not only of present regulations, but also of those which may be in effect when the facility is completed. While such predictions are difficult, it's almost certain that regulatory agencies will exercise even more environmental control over future uranium mining and milling operations, using the past errors of the 1950's as justification for increasingly stringent controls.

NO slackening of research and development in the physical metallurgy of iron and steel was evident in 1943-our second year since Pearl Harbor. Of course, many of the achievements were of a military nature, and could not be reviewed here even if they were known to the authors. It is an open secret that far-reaching investi¬gations have been undertaken in governmental, industrial, and university laboratories, and it is strongly hoped that much of this work will be brought to light when peace comes. However, despite the metallurgist's wartime assignments and the necessary restrictions on his reports he has still managed to publish substantial contributions to the knowledge of iron and steel. This has been particularly true in the United States; foreign papers have been too uncertain in their arrival to permit a comprehensive appraisal of developments abroad.

Occasionally it is good to consider the past, assess the present and project the future. Curriculum, enrollment, matriculation of graduates and changes in industry which influence mineral education are all relevant for determining what changes will be needed in educational institutions to support growth and development in the United States. It would appear likely that with environmental pressures, energy needs with present stress in fossil fuels and general societal needs for metals and minerals that mining and metallurgical engineering faces a period of growth and may be on the threshold of a new era with a vitality that has not been enjoyed for several decades. The following information is based on material obtained through questionnaires received from twelve schools accredited in mining or mineral engineering (out of 18 in the U.S.), 2 not accredited and 5 which no longer have mineral engineering disciplines. The schools presented do not include the smaller nor larges of the undergraduate programs in mining engineering.

The adsorption of selenite on bentonite, kaolinite, and an iron--coated illite was studied to determine the importance of several soil variables on selenite removal from uranium mill tailings pond seepage. Adsorption capacities of the clays of selenite varied by orders of magnitude and decreased in the following order: illite > kaolinite > bentonite. Maximum adsorption of selenite on the clays was observed between pH 2.5 and the clay's zero-point-of-charge. Substantially less selenite was adsorbed on these clays in actual mill tailings solutions than in model systems. Virtually all selenite was removed from the tailings at pH 7. The principal removal mechanism at this pH is suggested to be the adsorption of selenite on freshly precipitated metal hydroxides. It is concluded that selenite can be removed from tailings seepage in soil or in clay liners in the presence of kaolinitic clays and iron oxides. Selenite would also tend to be removed from tailings seepage in calcareous strata.

HOW much can the mine operator afford to spend on his coal burning boiler plant? The usual answer is as little as possible and still get the job done. Thus, attention must be focused on the spot where excessive costs are most likely to arise - the materials handling end of the job. Boiler plants consuming less than 30,000 tons of coal annually can be controlled to the point where costs for handling coal and ashes are under $1.00 per ton. There is a wide selection of coal and ash-handling systems that can be used in smaller boiler plants to provide labor savings and convenience required if management is to accept coal as fuel.

Of the many types of capital equipment found in a surface operation, draglines and mining shovels are probably subjected to the most severe service. Yet, some excavators have seen a generation or more of continuous service-proof, if any is needed, of their ruggedness. To keep these expensive pieces of machinery operating, a continuing maintenance program which includes field weld repairs is essential. During an excavator's working life, minor cracks may appear in parts of the steel structure, caused by fatigue and sometimes material defects-defects so small they could not be detected during manufacture.

A general theory for the growth of lamellar and rod eutectics is presented. These modes of growth depend on the interplay between the diffusion required for phase separation and the formation of interphase boundaries. The present analysis of these factors provides a justification for earlier approximate theovies. The conditions for stability of rod and Lanlellar structures are consitleved in terms of the mechanisms by which the structure can change. The mechanisms considered include both small adjustments to the lnnzellar spacing due to the motion of lamellar faults, and catastrophic changes due to instabilities. It is concluded that stable growth occurs at or near the minimum interface undevcooling for a gizierz growth rate. The conseqrlences of the existence of a diffusion boundary layer at the interface are discussed. The experimental results for the variation of growth rate, undercooling, and Lanzellar spacing are cornpared with the theory. We believe that the theory presented in this paper provides an adequate basis for understanding the complex phenomena of lanzellar and rod eutectic growth. The growth of lamellar eutectics has been the subject of several theoretical and many experimental studies. The foundations for the theoretical work were laid by zenerl and Brandt2 in their analyses of the growth of pearlite. Zener estimated the effect cf diffusion, and took into account the surface energy of the lamellar structure. He found that the lamellar structure could grow in a range of growth rates at a given undercooling provided the lamellar spacing was appropriate for the growth rate. Since pearlite grows with only one growth rate and one lamellar spacing at a given undercooling, there is clearly an ambiguity in the theory. Zener removed this ambiguity by postulating that the growth rate was the maximum possible at the given undercooling. He predicted then that the product of the growth velocity v and the square of the lamellar spacing A should be constant, i.e., A2v = const. Brandt2 started out by assuming that the interface between the lamellae and austenite was sinusoidal. Because of this, the ambiguity encountered by Zener did not arise. Brandt was able to obtain an approximate solution to the diffusion equation, but, since he did not take into account the surface energy, his considerations are incomplete. Tiller3 applied some of these ideas to the growth of eutectics, and proposed a minimum undercooling condition to replace the maximum velocity condition used by Zener. These conditions are formally identical. Hillert4 extended the work of Zener. He found a solution to the diffusion equation assuming the interface to be plane. Taking surface energy into account, and applying Zener's maximum condition, he was able to calculate an approximate shape of the interface. Jackson et al.5 used an iterative method employing an electric analog to the diffusion problem to refine the calculation of interface shape. It was found that the interface shape calculated from a plane-interface solution to the diffusion equation was negligibly different from the exact solution. The method provided an analog only for eutectics for which the volumes of the two phases are equal, growing from a melt of exactly eu-tectic composition. There has also been considerable experimental work on eutectics, Several experimenters8-10 found that A2v is constant as predicted by Zener.1 Hunt and chilton10 demonstrated that ?T/v1/2 is also a constant for the Pb-Sn system as predicted. Lemkey et al.11have recently found A2v to be constant for a rod eutectic. In the present paper, we present the steady-state solution for the diffusion equation for a lamellar eutectic growing with a plane interface, for the general case, that is, with no restriction on the relative volumes of the two phases, and with the melt on or off eutectic composition. A similar solution is also found for a rod-type eutectic. Expressions are obtained for the average composition at the interface and the average curvature of the interface. These equations for the average composition and curvature are similar in form to those derived by Zener1 and Tiller,3 and provide a justification for some of the approximations made by these authors. The mechanisms by which the spacing in a lamellar structure can change are considered. The important mechanism for small changes in lamellar spacing involves a lamellar fault. Examination of the stability of lamellar faults leads to the conclusion that the growth occurs at or near the extremum.* The insta- bilities which can develop in a rodlike structure are also discussed, resulting in the conclusion that this structure also grows at or near the extremum. Comparison of the conditions for rod and lamellar growth permits a prediction of the surface-energy anisotropy required to produce rods or lamellae for various volume-fraction ratios. The diffusion equation predicts the existence of a diffusion boundary layer at the eutectic interface unless the eutectic has 0.5 volume fraction of each phase and is growing into a liquid of eutectic composition. This boundary layer is such as to make the composition in the liquid at the interface approximately equal to the eutectic composition. This boundary layer permits changes in composition during the zone refining of eutectics. Photographs of the eutectic interface of a growing transparent organic eutectic system have been made. Industrial minerals - being the basic materials for much of the industrial activity in the world -suffer or gain in the market place with changes in that activity. The period 1970 and early 1971 has been one of little growth in many of the mineral-consuming industries, particularly those associated with building and construction. Consequently, the production of many commodities revealed little or no increase above 1969 levels. The pick-up of construction activity in the last half of 1971, however, is expected to be at an intensity which will result in an over-all good year; for example, cement shipments may, establish a record. Some industrial minerals products that bucked downward trends were those allied with the agricultural industry. Phosphate rock shipments increased, particularly from Florida which contributes over 400/c of the phosphate rock in the western world. Potash had higher sales and production for the third straight year, which means that inventories are being eased. The catch-all term of ecology is an oft-mentioned theme among industrial minerals suppliers. Specifically, the need for control of dust emissions is adding a heavy capital investment burden to many of the producers; such a burden, in fact, that plants have had to cease operations because the cost of dust collection equipment could not be born. As an order-of-magnitude estimate, dust collection equipment for cement plants can run $2-3 million for a single plant; some estimates are that the total cost of dust collection equipment in a new plant can be approximately 20% of total investment. All minerals processers have dust control expense of greater or lesser proportion.

ELECTROLYTIC zinc produced from sulfate solution and, with pure lead anodes is always contaminated with a small and varying percentage of lead. The purpose of this investigation is to determine the characteristics of several lead alloys and their influence on the products of electrolysis and power consumption. The study of alloyed anodes has been a matter of interest for some years. Tainton, Taylor and Ehrlinger prepared a highly interesting paper1 on this subject a year ago, in which the effects of silver-lead and some ternary alloys of lead-silver-tin were described. The present paper describes a study of various combinations of 10 metals. The general plan of the work provides for the fabrication of the alloyed anode, its adequate conditioning by preparatory electrolytic operation, the production of cathode zinc and its analysis, the determination of the anode polarization, and other features. A list of the anodes tested, showing composition and polarization at various current densities together with the lead assay of the cathode zinc, is shown in Table 1.

Distortions caused by dip on five-spot sweep pattern were determined by visual experiments on a model composed of parallel plates of glass with holes drilled at the well positions. This model war designed to simulate a reservoir depleted of its primary oil and containing a gas phase. Prior to interference, it was found that the injected fluid took a nearly circular shape about the injection well for the cases studied. However, these circles moved down-dip considerably under the influence of gravity. It was concluded that pattern flooding should be practical for many dipping reservoirs. A quantitative measure is given of how much the well position should be altered to allow for dip. Experimental deternzinarions of injectivity showed this to be about the same in a dipping reservoir as in a horizontal one. INTRODUCTION This investigation was undertaken at the suggestion of the Pacific Coast area, Shell Oil Co., where a pilot water flood in a dipping reservoir was being carried out at the time this paper was in preparation. Prior to the undertaking of this flood there had been considerable speculation as to how gravity would distort a flood pattern in a dipping reservoir. The thought was expressed in some quarters that a five-spot flood would not be applicable to a dipping reservoir because the flood pattern would elongate in the direction of dip and would never form a "seal" around each five-spot. If the flood pattern elongated sufficiently, both the oil and the water might flow largely downdip rather than into the pattern producers. In view of the importance of the California water floods, it was deemed important to determine the effects of gravity on a five-spot pattern in a dipping reservoir. Previous work had also been carried out in this laboratory,1 but only for the single-fluid case. The present investigation extends these results to multifluid cases. Several sets of pictures of flood fronts are presented so that the process can be visualized. From these pictures, curves are obtained which show the correct drilling position for achieving equal times of oil-bank breakthrough. Several injectivity curves are also presented which may aid in prediction of injection rate. ASSUMPTIONS The present results were obtained with a model composed of two parallel plates of glass spaced about 1 mm apart. When the inertial forces are small, as in these experiments, the flow between the plates follows Darcy's law and is analogous to flow through porous media. In using these plates, it is not possible to scale effects of capillarity correctly as regards a transition zone between injected and displaced fluid. Calculations show, however, that effects of such capillarity should not be important in determining the gross flooding pattern in the field. In fact, in this model the capillary forces tend to circularize the pattern to a greater degree than in the field. To preserve a large ratio between the viscous forces and the circularizing capillary forces in the laboratory model, viswus glycerine was used as the flooding liquid and the rate of flooding was very high. The circularizing force is believed negligible in these experiments. In addition to the effect of the surface tension y, which tends to circularize the pattern, another capillary force must be considered. This is the adhesion tension y cos, which acts at right angles to the circularizing term y. If the plates in the model are "wetted" the same all around the periphery, then the adhesion tension,

In a zirconium {1121} twins tend to have coherelzt boundaries and thus do not usually taper to a point when they intersect a grain boundary. Under the proper conditions, a (1121) twin may deform a boundary in such a manner as to clearly rcveal the twinning shear. Measurements of these grain-bounrlary rotatzons yield a value of 0.63 for the (1151) twinning shear. The magnitude of the observed shear and its shear sense are in excellent agreement with the assumption that the second undis-torted plme (K2) for this form of twinning is the basal plane (0002). The present value of the tzvinninz shear, which is approximately three limes larger than Rapperport&apos;s value? is in excellent agreement with reported results of Sokuskii and Prolsenko.5 RECENTLY westlake&apos; reported a study of the twinning modes of zirconium based on ~ap~er~ort&apos;s2 values for the twinning elements. He observed that two of the modes, (1012) and {1122), can be explained by relatively simple dislocation models. A workable model for (1121) twinning, however, proved to be very complex and questionable. Because Rapperport&apos;s second undistorted plane, (K2), for (1121) twinning has large indices, {ll2l6), it is possible that the difficulty in defining a model for (1121) twinning lies in an incorrect value for K2. A measurement of this twinning element has therefore been made, using a method based on observations of the shear displacement of grain boundaries at positions where they are intersected by (1121) twins. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The zirconium specimens were deformed in tension on an Instron machine either at the temperature of liquid nitrogen (77ºK), or prestrained at liquid nitrogen temperature and then further deformed at room temperature. Straining at 77°K was employed in order to nucleate (1 121) twins in large numbers, since simple ropm-temperature tensile deformation favors (1012) twinning. Specimens were machined from 1/2-in.-thick plate. The material was arc-melted sponge zirconium annealed to an ASTM grain size 4 and containing, in parts per million, 380 Fe, 880 0, <40 Hf, 32 N, and < 5 H. The specimen gage length and diameter were 1.25 and 0.130 in., respectively. To insure a gage section initially free of twins, the last 60 thousandths of the specimen diameter was removed by acid machining.

SOME time ago the writer needed a cheap, light, and portable hydraulic lift or crane, that would be universal in its application, and that might -be suspended from crane-arms, overhead tramways, beams, etc., and serve all the uses of ordinary hydraulic cranes. This was accomplished by the use of a closed cylinder of wrought-iron hydraulic pipe, provided at its top with the ordinary gland and stuffing-box, through the centre of which passed another similar pipe of slightly smaller diameter, forming in effect the ordinary plunger of the regular hydraulic crane. Over the top of this centre pipe or plunger or piston a disk of iron is placed with two arms projecting several inches from the rim, as may be required. Through these arms long iron rods pass, one on each. side, and are fastened in place by nuts screwed to a bearing immediately above and below the disk. These rods also pass through the enlarged head of the lift down through a casting which closes the bottom of the cylinder, which, at the same time, gives them a bearing, and they terminate at a point below the casting equal to the height of the lift of the crane. The rods at this point pass through a disk similar to the top disk and are similarly secured in place. A common hook arranged with a swivel passes through the centre of the disk, and on this hook the load is suspended. For a stationary hanging crane the apparatus is suspended by two rods passing through the head of the lift in similar manner to the two already described, at right angles to the first, and of sufficient length to let the first set play between them and rise to the full height which the plunger will allow. The second set of rods terminates in an iron disk similar to the one at the bottom of the first set, and a hook through this in turn suspends the entire apparatus. In order to adapt the lift to an overhead tramway, single or double, in place of the suspending rods, a projection or offset is arranged on each side of the head of the lift and a journal cast in, allowing the lift to be suspended on pivots arranged as follows

Single-phase aluminum containing 1 to 600ppm copper was studied in 7 to 26 pct HCl. The corrosion rate in the autocatalytic stage was resolved into a constant intrinsic component and an acdelerating autocatalytic component, and attention was focused on the part of this stage where the corrosion rate could be described by a simple empirical relation. Autocatalytic corrosion in this period was localized and its rate increased rapidly with copper content and with the strength and chlaride content of the acid. The effects of adding cupric ion to 16 pct HCI were functionally and quantitatively inconsistent with the autocatalytic rates observed. A theory of these rates was given based on the deposition in nzetallic contact with the aluminum of part of the copper introduced by corrosion. It has long been known in a general way that aluminum containing sufficient copper suffers in hydrochloric acid an autocatalytic acceleration of corrosion resulting from the introduction into the acid of copper ions and their reduction on the specimen as elemental copper, which provides cathodes of low hydrogen overvoltage.&apos;-3 In a previous paper, this phenomenon was identified in single-phase high-purity material at copper levels as low as 20 ppm and an empirical equation describing autocatalytic corrosion rates in 16 and 20 pct HC1 was presented. In the present work the range of acid strength and chemistry studied was extended, a more accurate empirical equation for the autocatalytic rate was determined, and a theory of this rate was formulated. A major source of interest in this system is the intergranular corrosion, which is also strongly influenced by copper content,= and an objective of the present work on general corrosion was to provide a basis for studying the role of copper content in intergranular corrosion, which is experimentally much less accessible.

First-order kinetics adequately describe the recovery of a single floatable species. The conditions under which cell behazior can be simulated by a single-phase model are discussed; deviations from the multiphase model are accountable. The rate coefficient depends upon operating conditions besides particle size and mineralogy and the physicochemical properties of the pulp constituents. The model for a real flotation system combines the first -order, single-phase model with a distribution of noninteracting species. Methods for determining the distributions are discussed. Applications of the procedure to flotation studies are outlined. The mathematical description of flotation as a rate process can be traced to Garcia1 who reported cases in which the fraction of solid remaining in a cell in semi-batch operation, F (for Notation used throughout, see Table l), decays exponentially with experimental time T. F = e-k>r. (1 The differential equation leading to Eq. 1 is dF ----= -k,F (2) dT which is recognized as the algebraic analog of the chemical kinetics first-order reaction equation.&apos; This has led to suggested mechanisms for flotation and mathematical relationships other than first order: with very little foundation other than analogy. The flotation rate coefficient kl can be accounted for as the product of several probabilities concerning bub-ble-particle attachment and detachment, aggregate entry from pulp into froth and return from froth to pulp, and removal from froth as concentrate. These factors clearly contribute to the magnitude of the overall flotation rate, and there are others also, but describing flotation merely as the overall probability of consecutive gross events hardly appears a significant advance in understanding. More recently, it has been described in terms of a stochastic process, which promises to provide a more satisfactory approach? The present paper will be more concerned with a phenomeno-logical description of the flotation process than with an account of the internal mechanics of the process. This is not a statement of priorities, or a judgement of the relative importance of these options but rather an assessment of what is presently possible. Previous investigators&apos;" have developed methods for interpreting semi-batch flotation data in terms of species distribution. These methods have been used in an attempt to explain flotation behavior in response to changes in operating conditions."
