LEONARD Utilization from the Point of View of the Preparation Engineer The primary interest of the coal preparation engineer is process design, operation and maintenance to produce an acceptable product which can be sold at the greatest possible profit. Because of these interests, attention to the unrealized potential value of coal is sometimes neglected. The intent of this chapter is to alert the preparation engineer to the utilization possibilities of both the product as well as the tributary coal flow moving through a modem coal preparation plant. Thus, coal types having similar physical and chemical properties tend to become increasingly concentrated according to size, specific gravity and/or surface chemistry. The basis for any unrealized potential derives directly from the coal seam itself. Most coal seams consist of coal bands and benches which are sandwiched together in layers and which visually differ from each other by physical structure and luster. Randomly selected physical and chemical ranges determined from layers of coal in a single seam can easily differ by as much as 30 Hardgrove grindability indices, 0.30 of a specific gravity point, 20 percentage points of ash, six percentage points of dry volatile matter and 10 percentage points of total sulfur.1 Similar wide variations exist for calorific value, seam moisture content and undoubtedly, for any other conceivable coal test parameter which might be used for comparative purposes. These observations all point to the long established fact that coal is not homogeneous as conventional analytical methods might tend to indicate, but is instead a highly heterogeneous substance. Since both coal and associated minerals entering a preparation plant are highly heterogeneous, a multi-product potential beginning with certain flotation cell concentrates and ending with plant refuse may exist. Such a potential can and to a limited extent is achieved at some operations by drawing off coal according to size, specific gravity and/or surface chemistry differences from individual coal cleaning processes. Such a sequenced draw-off of coal of increasing ash increments could yield, among other products, chemical coals, coking coals, coals for pulverized fuel boilers, cyclone boiler coals, coals for cement plants, limestone, shale and clay. A primary concern in the solution of any solid waste disposal problem is the characterization of the material. In the past, available methodology for the determination of coal refuse characteristics has been severely limited by the inseparable combination of organic and inorganic matter of which the refuse is comprised. The recent development of an electronic, low temperature asher which removes the organic material without alteration of the inorganic constituents has opened new areas of coal and coal refuse research. This study deals with the development of methodology for the characterization of Pennsylvania anthracite refuse through utilization of the low temperature asher. Seven samples of anthracite refuse were examined for verification of the methodology developed and information concerning the characteristics of the refuse.

During the past ten or twelve years, the average reader of newspaper and magazine articles has been led to believe that enormous deposits of high-grade coal exist in the northland and that these can be mined for practically nothing. But much of the reputed glitter and attractiveness of Alaskan coals disappears when viewed at close range. Many areas of coal-bearing rocks are widely distributed geographically from Cape Lisburne, on Bering Sea, to Admiralty Island, south of Juneau. Bituminous coal is found at Cape Lisburne, on the Bering Sea, at Five Finger Rapids on the upper Yukon, and at Herendeen Bay and Chignik Bay; lignite is found on the Kobuck River, along the Yukon River from points near the mouth to Tonakat, near Rampart, at Dawson, on the east shore of Cook Inlet, and in the Tanana Valley, 50 mi. south of Nenana. The Susitna and Matanuska Valleys contain coal ranging from lignite to anthracite, and in the Bering Lake district, there are coals ranging from semi-bituminous to anthracite. No effort will be made to describe all of these fields, but the writer will confine himself to the four principal fields, namely, the Nenana field! in the interior of Alaska, tributary to the Fairbanks district; the Matanuska field, in the Matanuska Valley; the Kachemak Bay field on the east shore of Cook Inlet; and the Bering River field, east of the mouth of Copper River. Nenana Coal Field The Nenana field occupies an area east of the Nenana River 70 mi. (112 km.) southwest of Fairbanks and approximately 50 mi, from the town of Nenana, which is located at the junction of the Alaskan Railway and the Tanana River. It is on the northern flank of the Alaskan Range and occurs within the foothills of that district. The elevations range from 1000 to 4000 ft. (304 to 1219 m.). Future developments may prove the field to extend from a considerable distance west of the Nenana River to the headwaters of the Tanana River. The coal measures are of Tertiary age and are probably Eocene. They are not badly deformed by folding, but portions of the field show

The results of combined analytical and experimental studies involving simulated multiple bit-tooth penetration into mck are incorporated into a drilling rate equation for roller-cone bits assuming rather idealized downhole conditions. In particular, it is assumed that the rock behaves statically in a ductile fashion during bit-tooth penetration and that the rock chips are instantaneously removed from the bottom of the drill hole. The general analysis demonstrates an application of plasticity theory for the rock/bit-tooth interaction to the formulation of an upper limit on rotary drilling rate. INTRODUCTION Extensive experimentation involving single and indexed bit-tooth penetration into rock in a confining pressure environment has demonstrated that the chip formation process is of a ductile, or pseudoplastic, nature at sufficiently low differential pressures so as to be of interest in rotary drilling. Coincident with the experimentation, analytical consideration has been given to the theoretical problems of single and indexed bit-tooth penetration into rock. In general, the analyses have assumed that the rock behaves statically in a rigid-plastic fashion and obeys the Mohr-Coulomb yield criterion. The quantitative comparison between experimental and calculated values of bit-tooth load required for chip formation has been remarkably good for a variety of rocks commonly encountered in drilling and at simulated differential pressures as low as 500 to 1,000 psi. Results obtained recently for indexed bit-tooth penetration indicate that the work (or energy) required to produce a unit volume of rock chip can be minimized by a proper combination of bit-tooth spacing and bit-tooth load for a given rock type and differential pressure. By utilizing this information, it is possible to formulate a drilling rate equation, at least in a preliminary fashion, for a roller-cone bit performing under rather idealized downhole conditions. In particular, through the use of characteristic dimensionless quantities pertinent to a roller-cone bit and to indexed bit-tooth penetration, interrelationships among bit weight, rotary speed, rotary power, bit diameter, rock strength and bit-tooth shape and spacing can be explicitly expressed. In the formulation of the equations, however, it is assumed that the rock chips are instantaneously removed from the bottom of the drill hole and- that the rock behaves in a ductile manner during bit-tooth penetration. In addition, the effects of bit-tooth load application and penetration by a yawed tooth at an oblique angle are neglected. Although the analysis is presented in the light of some rather restrictive conditions, it does demonstrate a method of applying fundamental rock/bit-tooth interaction data, obtained by combining the results of analysis and experiment to the formulation of a drilling rate equation for rotary drilling. JNDEXED BIT-TOOTH/ROCK INTERACTION PREVIOUS RESULTS The mechanics of bit-tooth/rock interaction under simulated conditions of borehole environment have been extensively described in a number of papers.l-ll In particular, the effects of differential pressure, mechanical properties of rock, pore fluid, bit-tooth shape and spacing, rate of bit-tooth load application and dynamic filtration below the bit-tooth have been investigated experimentally. From a sequence of experiments.1-4 it was demonstrated that, for dry rock at atmospheric pore pressure, the mode of chip formation exhibits a transition, with increasing confining pressure, from predominantly brittle to predominantly ductile. In the death of Sir William Siemens, the Institute loses its most distinguished honorary member, one who, without exaggeration, may be ranked among the greatest Men of the century. In justification of this claim, I quote in part the words of two other men eminent in the walks of science. Professor Huxley, addressing the Royal Society, spoke of Siemens as "a marked example of vast energy, large scientific acquirements, and intellectual power of a high order," and as one " who had no superior in fertility and ingenuity of invention, while hardly any living man so thoroughly combined an extensive knowledge of scientific principles with the power of applying then] in a commercially successful manner. The value of his numerous inventions must be measured, not merely by the extent to which they have increased the wealth and convenience of mankind, but by the favorable reaction on the progress of pure science which they, like all such inventions, have exerted, and will continually exert." Dr. Wedding, in his address before the Verein zur Befarderung des Gewerbefleisses in Preussm, speaks of Siemens as being "so fortunate as to combine German erudition with British activity in such a manner that both nations, Gertnan as well as English, were equally proud of him; and, now that his rich life is ended, regret is expressed on both shores of the North Sea, first by the Germans that his entire life had not been spent in Germany, and his powers dedicated to Germany, and by the English that he was not born a Briton." Germany may well be proud of being the birth-place, not only of such a man, but of such a family; for where in history shall we find in a single family such a wide range of knowledge so successfully applied to the arts? MANY processes for cleaning coal that are in use depend primarily on physical properties of coal and refuse other than specific gravity and surface conditions relating to froth flotation. These properties are shape, coefficient of sliding friction, resilience, friability, magnetic susceptibility, and electrical conductivity. In many of these processes specific gravity does have some effect and many separators are designed to utilize more than one of the physical properties cited. Although the processes described herein do not have a widespread application, yet for specific coals and specific conditions, they are economically important. A problem confronting many coal-mining districts is the marketing of the slacks or screenings and dust passing the final sizing screens. Processes in commercial use installed primarily to increase the form value, and hence the market value, of these slacks and dusts include briquetting, packaging, and low-temperature carborization. MECHANICAL PICKERS Machines utilizing shape, fictional resistance, and differences in resilience of coal and impurities are usually called mechanical pickers. They require a closely sized feed, therefore their use is confined to the pea, nut, and egg sizes. Various types of these devices are described by Berrisford, 1, 2 Taggart, 3 and Peele. 4 Shape In general, coal differs in shape from its accompanying dirt throughout the range of commercial sizes. Coal, breaking into roughly, cubical particles, contains a greater number of axes that are approximately the same length than does the dirt. The latter, consisting of pieces of slate and shale and lenses of pyrite, is flatter in nature. Further, flat coal often has a dirty, slaty appearance, even though of high quality. Mechanical pickers known as flat pickers, or "flatters," are widely used in the Pennsylvania anthracite region to remove flat coal from the final clean coal. This practice greatly improves the appearance of the final market product.

Scraper With over 40 pet more struck capacity than previous models, the new Caterpillar No. 90 scraper is designed to increase earthmoving production when used with D8 tractor power. This scraper moves dirt with the aid of a hard surfaced, reversible cutting edge. Material is carried in a flat, doublebottom bowl of high tensile steel. Operation is by means [ ] of a cable-control unit, which can be mounted on the rear of the tractor to provide for positive loading and ejection. Tapered roller bearings are installed at each axle. The scraper uses two 24.00 to 29 front tires and two 27.00 to 33 rear tires, all four of 24-ply rating. When loaded, the scraper distributes 60 pet of the weight on the rear tires. Circle No. 1

Most of the electron diffraction studies of oxide films which form on metals and alloys have been carried out by oxidizing the specimens in an auxiliary furnace, cooling down to room temperature and then inserting the sample in the camera and taking a diffraction photograph. Prior to the investigations at the Westinghouse Research Laboratories, no systematic study of the oxidation of any metal or alloy had been made over a wide temperature range with photographs taken at elevated temperatures except the investigation of iron by Jackson and Quarrell.' In order to interpret the electron diffraction patterns of the oxides which may form on alloys, it seemed advisable to make a comprehensive study of the oxidation of the purest metals available in the bulk form. Thus far studies have been completed on iron,2 cobalt,~ nickel,= chromium,= copper,z tungsten,s molybdenum,3 beryllium,' uranium,' thorium,' titanium6 and zirconium6 while investigations are in progress on tantalum and columbium. The next step in the study is concerned with the investigation of the oxides which form on binary alloys. Some of the alloys consist of a single phase while others contain more than one phase. The identification of the oxides on the surface of a binary alloy may be more difficult than on the metals since oxides containing both metals as well as those of each metal separately may form. Furthermore, it is possible that solid solutions of the various oxides may occur. In these cases the electron diffraction method may not be able to identify the oxidation products unequivocally. Examples of solid solutions which may present difficulties are MOO* and WOp, Fe304 and FeO.CrnOa since the diffraction patterns are so similar. Since electron diffraction can determine only the structure of the oxide, the chemical composition must be inferred from the diffraction data based upon X ray diffraction investigations of specimens of known composition. It is possible in some cases to decide whether a given solid phase reaction can occur on the surface of an alloy by a study of available thermodynamic data. Table I lists the equations for the formation of most of the oxides from the elements together with values of loglo Kg for the several temperatures. The aim of this Source Book has been to bring together in concise form information on the wealth of technical literature on mining and geology issued by the bewilderingly many state bureaus, federal bureaus, technical societies, trade associations and other noncommercial agencies in the United States. The effort has been made to include the navies of all the noncommercial publishers of such technical literature, to indicate where and at what price the articles may be obtained, as well as to give with as much detail as space permits specific information on individual papers. The thought has been to put the information particularly in the hands of the younger members of the profession, who may not yet have had the wide contacts with this literature that they will need in later life. Several factors have interfered with the complete attainment of the original intention. Undoubtedly some agencies that properly have a place in these pages have unintentionally been omitted; many agencies canvassed were omitted as not having literature of direct concern here; in other cases some. of the needed information was lacking; and the limitations of time and space have bounded the scope of the compilation.. Except in one or two cases, only publications prior to July, 1932, are included here, and from that standpoint the book is necessarily incomplete, as additions are continually being made to the files of literature on these subjects. Individual titles have been listed whenever possible but where an agency has collected a great mass of published material only most important titles, and a general review of the scope of the works, can be made. This results in penalizing, in a way, bureaus such as the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the U. S. Geological Survey, which have voluminous and vitally important works in the fields covered, because space commensurate with that volume and importance cannot be allowed. In any event, in such cases, a complete catalog is issued periodically and repetition is superfluous. The space

One point he has brought out which 1 think some of us have not thought through to the same extent that he has—that the continuous casting process offers the small producer an opportunity to compete with the larger, more conventional and presumably better established industries. THE leaching method that was first widely used with the cyanide process consisted of percolation leaching of crushed ore in vats or leaching tanks. It was frequently necessary to separate the sand for cyanide treatment and discard the slimes, because only granular material allows the necessary amount of solution to percolate through it in a reasonable time. Later a slime process consisting of agitation followed by thick-ening and filtration was developed, and is extensively used to the pres-ent day. Even though the agitation-leaching slime process is considered satis-factory, the cost of plant and of operation are both greater than for a percolation-leaching plant of equal capacity. This situation has been recognized in the hydrometallurgical treatment of copper-bearing slimes; and a considerable amount of j work has been done at the Southwest Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines in an effort to develop a percolation method of treating slimes. Experimental work on the copper-leaching problem was started by H. E. Keyes1, and later tests were made by J. D. Sullivan and A. P. Towne2. The Bureau of Mines work resulted in the development of a process by which slimes were moisture-agglomerated with sand and crushed ore, to form a permeable mass through which solution could be trickled without breaking clown the glomerules. The agglomeration trickle-leaching method was devel-oped on a small scale and finally tried out in a 12-ton vat. Successful results were obtained as long is the leach solution was added slowly, so that the agglomerated charge was never flooded. If the leach solu-tion flooded the charge, the glomerules broke down and, the charge became impervious. There are two important difficulties in the application of the agglom-eration trickle-leaching-method to the cyanide process for gold and silver ores:

[ ] For President-Elect Leo F. Reinartz has been nominated for the Presidency of AIME in 1954. Mr. Reinartz is now vice-president, special operating development, Armco Steel Corp. He was born in East Liverpool, Ohio, and graduated from the Carnegie Institute of Technology as metallurgical engineer. He joined Armco in 1909 as a chemist and then became open hearth foreman; assistant superintendent, open hearth dept.; superintendent, open hearth dept.; assistant general superintendent; works manager, East works; manager, Middletown div.; and assistant vice-president, successively. Mr. Reinartz has been active in many technical societies and delivered papers before several. He has been the recipient of the Alumni Award from Carnegie and holds life honorary membership in the AIME National Open Hearth Conference. One of the organizers of the National Open Hearth Conference, Mr. Reinartz was Chairman, Executive Committee (1927 to 1946) and is presently Chairman of its Finance Committee. In October 1951 he was an American Conferee at the First World Metallurgical Congress held in Detroit. An AIME member since 1925, Mr. Reinartz has been active on numerous committees of the Institute.

Future resources of aluminum may require the utilization of low grade ores to provide a more permanent protection for the nation. Aluminum minerals such as cloy, shale, and high iron laterites may become important sources. An evaluation of reserves is given. New laboratory results are reported on the Vereinigte desilication process. THIS report on future resources of aluminum metal emphasizes the necessity for investigating utilization of low grade potential ores to provide more permanent protection for the nation. Partial or complete interruption of the importation of high grade aluminum ores must be given consideration. Ultimately, aluminum minerals such as clay, shale, and high iron laterites may become the principal sources of aluminum. The development of extractive processes for treating these low grade materials is a step in long-range national preparedness that should receive more attention. In formulating such processes, the application of beneficiation methods for the purpose of classifying the several types of minerals before subjecting each type to the more expensive extractive procedures should be considered, and a careful survey of the basic factors of power sources, transportation facilities, and sources of raw material should be made. Domestic Bauxite Resources Of the domestic supply of current, treatable-grade bauxite, 95 pct comes from Arkansas. The present reserve of Arkansas bauxite suitable for metal production, including abrasive-grade, Bayer-grade, and modified Bayer-grade ores, is 34,000,000 tons. The total reserve of bauxite of all grades is approximately 75,000,000 tons. Reserves are estimated on a mined and dried basis. Data available to the Bureau of Mines in 1948 to 1949 were used in preparing Table I, which shows a breakdown by grades of bauxite for about a half of the reserves of the state. The modified Bayer ore, 10,555,500 long dry tons, is based on a cutoff of 8 to 15 pct silica. The sub- marginal 10,074,700 long dry tons is assumed to contain more than 40 pct gibbsite, more than 15 pct silica, and less than 32 pct available alumina. A considerable amount of this low grade material was consumed in 1949 and 1950. Additional tonnages of bauxitic and kaolinitic clays are indicated by the Bureau of Mines drilling project.' Applying a 50 pct factor to arrive at long tons mined and dried, the results of this project are approximately 31,500,000 tons kaolinitic clay at +35 pct Al²O3 and 11,800,000 tons kaolinitic clay at 20 to 35 pct A1,0,. Total reserves of kaolinitic clays are probably quite extensive—several times the reserves shown in the Bureau's work. Total reserves of bauxitic and high iron clays from the drilling program and previously established figures are 63,980,000 tons. The mineral dressing methods,' the lime-sinter process, he lime-sinter modification of the Pederson process," the lime-soda sinter process,"-' and the Alcoa combination processa. have been described in the literature and will not be elaborated upon here. The less familiar Vereinigte Aluminium-Werke process used by the Germans during World War 11 may require some amplification. The next use was in the manufacture of lime, which was employed by the ancients in mortar. These two uses of limestone are still all important, but they have been overshadowed in scores of regions by literally hundreds of new applications for raw lime-stone or products made from it. Anyone familiar with modern manufacturing processes can quickly call to mind many industries in which limestones are essential, and new uses are continually coming to notice. Any enumeration would probably be incomplete and soon out of date.

Columbium single crystals were deformed in tension and compression. Reorientation by X-rays and stereographic projections of slip traces indicate that plane of slip may be considered as (110). The plastic behavior is shown to be quite similar to the deformation of molybdenum single crystals. STUDIES on the crystallography of the deformation process in body-centered cubic metals have been renewed recently with investigations of iron single crystals1-" and molybdenum single crystals.4 It is now apparent that too many exceptions to the rationalization based upon the ratio of absolute testing temperature to absolute melting point by Andrade5 exist to permit more serious discussion of this type of analysis. The considerations of resolved shear stress utilizing only planes of the type {ll0}, {112), and {123)³,6 permit analysis of the deformation only on the basis of those three types of planes. The suggestions made by Elam7 and by Greninger8 in which the slip process is envisioned as a composite slip on two nonparallel {110) planes can be illustrated schematically in Fig. 1. It may be seen that an unresolved trace on any plane containing a <111> direction may be accomplished by varying the number of atoms participating in the composite process. By further varying the number of atoms in each plane but keeping the ratio of participating atoms constant, jogs could be obtained in the traces and hence wavy slip lines could be produced. Vogel and Brick&apos; studied the behavior of a iron single crystals in which they suggest that the plane of glide is "non-crystallographic" and may be predicted from the intersection between the great circle joining the slip direction and specimen axis with the great circle whose zone axis is the slip direction. In a more recent investigation on iron single crystals, Steijn and Brick" suggest that the slip mechanism may be considered as made up of a type of composite slip occurring on {110} and {112} planes. Evidence for a possible composite nature of the slip process has been presented for the case of molybdenum in the form of analysis of asterism and specimen axis rotation." Definite proof of a composite slip process must, however, await good electron microscopic resolution of the individual traces making up the unresolved optical trace used in determining the acting slip plane. The present investigation was undertaken to study the behavior of columbium single crystals not only in tension but also in compression since the specimen axis migration should indicate the plane or planes of glide in the same manner that the specimen axis migration in tension indicates the direction of glide. The orientations of eleven crystals investigated are shown in Fig. 2. Specific orientations are missing (those in the vicinity of [Ill] and [001] and consequently the effect of orientation on the crystallography of deformation could not be considered. Experimental Procedure The 1/8 in. rods (7 in. long) were subjected to an axial tension in vacuo while at temperatures in the vicinity of 2000°C for 2 to 4 hr. This treatment resulted in large cylindrical grains (about ½ in. long) occupying the entire cross section. A number of these rods were used for the tension studies by observing the behavior of the individual grains. For the compression studies, single crystals approximately % in. long by 1/8 in. in diameter were cut from the rods; the ends were ground parallel. CHAIRMAN JOHN BIRKINBINE :-Having been invited to preside at this session, the Chairman feels that the part he takes in discussions should be limited, although the subject presented is one of much interest to him and there are diverse viewpoints concerning methods of valuing expectancies from what may be considered " ore in sight," a term itself subject to various definitions. Estimates of quantities upon which valuations are made may differ without subjecting the estimators to criticism of unfairness if made by a prospective purchaser or by a seller, or if they are used as the basis for taxation. The hopes of the seller may influence a liberal allowance for estimated reserves, while the expectancies of a willing purchaser are less optimistic, and the tax assessor is expected to limit his consideration to the producing capacity of a mine, with possibly modest allowance for reserves. The knowledge that a property contains or yields mineral or the expectancy that it may be a producer of value adds to the estimate placed upon it by any of the above classes, and a just determination of this value is often a complex problem.

BY THE term mechanical mining is meant that operation, or series of operations, that replace the hand methods of mining. The first undercutting machine to operate in anthracite was placed in the Butler mine of the Hillside Coal & Iron Co., Dec. 23, 1910, by the Sullivan Machinery Co. The first Jackhamer used in the anthracite field was installed at the Wadesville colliery of the Philadelphia & Reading Coal & Iron Co. in Oct., 1912, by the Ingersoll-Rand Co. The first longwall conveyor was installed at the Dodge mines of the Delaware, Lackawanna, & Western Coal Co. in March, 1912. The first mechanical scraper equipment was installed in the Seneca mines of the Lehigh Valley Coal Co. in January, 1914. SCHMIDT, Salt Lake City, Utah.-Any furnace that can make a chloridizing roast to yield an extraction of 92 to 93 per cent. and do this at a cost of less than 24c. per ton in a 10-ton unit opens great possibilities for the treatment of certain classes of ores. This cost does not include the salt and will be reduced to about 16 1/2c. per ton in the 35-ton furnace which are now being designed. On a trial run the roaster treated 9.6 ton: of Ontario stope fillings crushed to pass a ¼ -in. opening. The ore is well adapted to chlorination with the exception of insufficient sulphur and occasional days of high lime, but is not adapted to any other process The following is an analysis of the crude ore: Ag, 9.52; Au, 0.029 oz. Pb, 0.71; Cu, 0.11; SiO, 79.4; Zn, 0.57; S, 1.00; Fe, 7.9; Mn, 0.89 CaO, 1.20 per cent. The composition of the mix was: Per Cent. Dry crude ore : 83.4 Moisture 4.4 Salt 8.3 Coal dust 2.3 Pyrite, 70 per cent. pure 1.6

Aluminum phosphide was synthesized and grown in solution of excess aluminum using a modified two-temperature technique. An inversion in the density difference between ALP and molten aluminum takes place at about 1100°. Dispersed nuclei can act as sources for further crystal growth in a manner resembling ripening. Advantage was taken of this phenomenon by introducing a stirring motion into the molten liquid. This was done with a split-phase 10-kH2 rotating magnetic field produced by four horizontal coils placed symmetrically about the furnace at the level of the molten metal. The method also prevents the formation of a surface film which would impede the reaction. By this technique vastly improved yields were obtained and flat crystals 5 by 5 by 0.5 mm were grown at lower temperatures and at greater rates than heretofore. THE family of III-V intermetallic compounds has received much attention since the prediction of their semiconducting properties in the early 1950s. Of the family, A1P has perhaps the highest band gap of those compounds normally possessing the zinc-blende structure. But it has been least studied because it is difficult to handle and grow. The handling difficulties have been dealt with elsewhere and it is sufficient to say here that, by various techniques, many of the difficulties can be overcome.&apos; The difficulties encountered in crystal growth can be related to the refractory nature of A1P and in turn to its high band gap. Because of the anticipated high melting point of the material and the accompanying high phosphorus vapor pressure, the reported work on synthesis and growth was done by epitaxial synthesis-growth via chlorine2 and iodine3 transport and from solution of excess aluminum by the two-temperature technique.4&apos;5 The transport-grown crystals take on the dimensions of the substrate but do not grow easily in thickness. In the usual two-temperature technique as applied on the synthesis of Alp, the temperature of the molten aluminum is kept at 1000° to 1250°C while the phosphorus is maintained at 1 to 20 atm. A thin film of aluminum phosphide and oxide form immediately, impeding the reaction and affecting the yield. Attempts to grow the Alp from such solutions by the methods used to grow Gap and InP from excess gallium and indium have not been successful.
